Improvement of current leaching technology was found necessary when processing ores which are more difficult to leach because they generate highly viscous, air-rejective pulps. Cyanidation of these pulps has to run at low oxygen concentrations if the conventional aeration technique with compressed air is used. Since the dissolution rate of precious metals mainly depends on the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp [1, 4, 5], the kinetics of the gold extraction become slow in such cases, which in turn often leads to a significant decrease in the overall gold output within the conventional leaching time of up to 48 hours.

Hydrometallurgy has a well-known and established role in the production of manganese metal (1) and manganese compounds, including battery grade manganese dioxide (2). Also, several leaching processes have been developed and applied at various times for the recovery of manganese from low grade ores (3). Recently, interest in the hydrometallurgy of manganese has been stimulated by the problems presented in the processing of sea nodules (4). Fumes and dusts from the ferro-manganese furnaces also offer a potential field for the application of manganese leaching techniques (5). In treating low grade manganese ores a major requirement of the leaching process is that it should dissolve manganese from a mixture of manganese and iron oxides. The most selective reagent for this purpose is ammonium carbamate applied after preliminary pyrometallurgical reduction of the ore (6). Since soluble carbamate complexes of the postulated type (7) are formed by both manganous and ferrous, but by neither manganic nor ferric, ions, selectivety of manganese leaching is achieved by control of the reduction operation to yield, essentially MnO and Fe304? A potential improvement to this two step process would be to simultaneously reduce and selectively leach the manganese in one hydrometallurgical operation. Over the past five years, the two-fold growth in Canada's coal industry "Figure, 1" results primarily from the coking coal market to Japan and, to a lesser degree, by the increasing use of sub-bituminous and lignite coal for power generation in the Prairie Provinces. This expansion will continue, but production of coal for domestic thermal generation of electricity will grow at a faster rate than coking coal exports "Figure, 2". Half of the 20 million tons of thermal coal used for electrical power generation in Canada during 1974 were imported by Ontario Hydro from U.S. coal companies in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Ontario Hydro's Nanticoke station on Lake Erie which will consume 7.5 million tons of coal in 1977 when fully operative, as well as other future planned projects, could cause Ontario Hydro's coal consumption to rise from 10 million tons today to 20 to 25 million tons by 1985

BACKGROUND The development of public transportation in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area is, as in other cities, closely tied to the development of the area because of increases in population and commercial and industrial activity. Local transportation first appeared in the area in the 1870s when the population was fewer than 10,000 residents. Around 1910, after many consolidations of competitive interests, two large railway companies were formed: The Los Angeles Railway, which provided urban transportation in the Los Angeles City area, and the Pacific Electric Railway, which primarily provided suburban and interurban transportation. These two entities continued with their operations until after World War II, when the ownership passed on to the Los Angeles Transit Lines and the Metropolitan Coach Lines, respectively. By then the railroads needed new equipment, track rehabilitation, and, of course, more money-paying patrons. Lack of grade separation of railway facilities from other traffic increased commute times and encouraged travel by private automobiles. The romantic era of hopping on a Pacific Electric Company "Big Red Car" was coming to an end. As early as 1917, in fact, bus lines were substituted for unprofitable rail service. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LMTA) was established in 1951 by the California Legislature to study and plan for improvements in the public transportation facilities in the Los Angeles area. In March of 1958 the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority took over the operation of the two lines.

As in many other areas of the Mexican economy, the legal rules applicable to mining in Mexico have been changing fast. Mexico's mining sector is opening up to levels of international participation that were unforeseeable just a few years ago. Over the last several years, Mexico has made dramatic changes in its trade and investment policies. Many of these changes have their roots in the administrations of Miguel de la Madrid and perhaps even Jose Lopez Portillo. However, the current administration of President Carlos Salinas must be given credit for articulating, advancing, promulgating and implementing these changes. Just a few short years ago, few people believed Mexico would repeal so many of its restrictions on foreign investment and lower its average tariff level from something around 100% to less than 10%, where it is today. NAFTA and mining The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is the most comprehensive international expression of Mexico's new policies. Except perhaps for the agreements establishing the European Union, NAFTA is the most detailed trade agreement ever written, consisting of about 2000 pages. The provisions of NAFTA with the greatest relevance to the mining industry include the chapters on investment and government procurement. Many mining companies may also find the temporary work provisions relevant. Finally, no discussion of NAFTA and the mining industry would be complete without some mention of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, the so-called Environmental Side Agreement.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) held a one-day workshop at its Denver, CO facility to inform the public of the status of its National Mapping Program. In addition, the agency wanted to obtain information from topographic map users on what their needs are. The agency wants to know what the topographic map user wants. The USGS faces the challenge of keeping up with the changing needs of the nation. In the last few years, the agency has changed dramatically to meet these needs. For example, the "new" USGS incorporates mineral-information specialists from the former US Bureau of Mines and also uses the expertise of former National Biological Service employees. These areas complement the agency's traditional strengths in mapping, geology and water re- sources. The stated mission of the USGS's National Mapping Division is to "meet the nation's need for basic geospatial data, ensuring access to and advancing the application of these data and other related ears science information f& users worldwide." To accomplish this goal, the USGS publishes topographic maps, including shaded-relief editions of areas of special interest (state maps and national parks); photo image maps; satellite image maps; geologic maps and hydrologic maps. The geologic maps include geologic quadrangle maps, oil and gas investigation maps and charts, and coal investigations maps. The familiar 7.5-minute series topographic maps are the most widely used. The 7.5-minute- (1:24,000-scale-) format mapping was begun in 1935.

Strain burst can occur in underground hard rock excavation when the in-situ stresses are high enough. The prerequisite for rock burst is that the total energy released from the rock mass is higher than the energy needed for rock fracture. The total released energy is contributed by both the burst rock and the surrounding rock. The part of the energy from the burst rock is constant per unit volume of the rock, but the part from the surrounding rock is associated with the burst volume. A greater amount of energy will be released from the surrounding rock in the case of a larger volume of burst rock. The postulation for the energy conversion in strain burst is verified through a FLAC3D model in the paper. It is assumed that the strain burst occurs in a circular tunnel that is located in the hydrostatically loaded rock mass in the model. Six pairs of notches with different depths are created in the opposite walls of the tunnel to simulate the bursts. The energies released from the notch rocks and from the surrounding rock are calculated during the burst. The simulation results show that the percentage of the energy released from the surrounding rock in the total released energy increases with the notch depth. The numerical modelling confirms the postulation that the surrounding rock contributes more energy than the burst rock itself in large-scale strain bursts

The dissolution behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions with cupric ammine as an oxidant has been investigated using a rotating disc electrode. The rates of dissolution of silver were determined by an electrochemical means as well as a direct measurement of silver ions reported in the bulk solution as a function of time. The variables investigated included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of lixiviants, and pH of the solutions. The rate of dissolution under the conditions studied' was found to be controlled by an electrochemical reaction at the liquid/ solid interface with an apparent activation energy of 48.07 kJ /mole. The rate was found to be a half order with respect to the, concentration of cupric tetra-ammine, Cu(NH3)l+.; The results were explained in terms of a mixed' potential theory.

A dynamic programming algorithm is presented that takes a series of nested phases, a fixed mining rate schedule, a fixed plant production capacity schedule, and finds the mining and cutoff grade sequence that maximizes the Net Present Value. This tool allows the Mining Engineer to quickly look at project sensitivity to various production capacities, commodity prices, and costs. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been used at Newmont.

Silicosis among metal miners is an ancient disease, probably as old as mining itself.' However, the primitive forms of mining were not productive of much silica dust, and the short life span of slaves used in mining probably precluded the development of more than a few sporadic cases of silicosis. Early diagnostic terms of miners' asthma and miners' phthisis suggested an occupational relationship and a tubercular component, but little attention was given to silicbsis until the turn of this century when epidemics of silico-tuberculosis arose due to the great expansion of the mining industry in the United States, especially silver and gold mining. The expansion was accompanied by mechanization and the introduction of pneumatic tools, which generated increasing amounts of fine silica dust. Mining communities were crowded and hygiene was poor.' The tubercle bacillus would probably have flourished even without the predisposition of silicosis.' As is so often the case in occupational health, biostatistical analyses first called attention to the problem, and environmental-medical studies later confirmed its existence. The bio-statistical analyses were occupational mortality statistics compiled by the Prudential Life Insurance Company in 1907, showing evidence of excessive mortality from tuberculosis and relationship to dust exposure. "The construction of 6.3 km long central part of 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 (7 stations - out of which three 25m deep stations - built using cut and cover method; two single-track tunnels constructed using four EPB TBMs as well as a short NATM section with soil freezing below the existing road tunnel). Central section of the 2nd metro line was opened to public after verification and testing in March 2015. Design and build tender for the extension of this line in East (three stations) and West direction (three stations) was announced with total length of running tunnels – approx. 5 km. Detailed description of a very complex geotechnical context, different construction methods, challenges encountered and solved during construction and finally lessons learnt on this interesting project are presented in the paper. DESCRITPTION OF THE PROJECT Introduction The very first concept plan of the metro system in Warsaw was designed several years after regaining independence by Poland in 1918. In 1929, following the geotechnical survey, design works begun, but the economic crisis of the 1930s stopped it. After a few years of break, in 1938 a coherent concept of the metro network was proposed to be implemented in phases over the next 35 years. In total, construction of 46 kilometers of metro, including 31 km of tunnels and 15 km on surface, was planned. Unfortunately, World War 2 made the implementation of those plans impossible. In the post-war period several metro designs were elaborated, but none except one was scheduled for implementation. Construction of the 1st, 23.1 km long, North-South line commenced in 1983 and finished in 2008 (Sieminska-Lewandowska et all. 2009). Nowadays, Warsaw covers the area of 517 km2 and, according to year 2014 statistical data, the city has much more than 1.7 million inhabitants. Only one operating metro line is not sufficient for such a populated city. Up-to-date metro plan, shown on Figure 1, includes also 30.5 km long 2nd metro line. It’s route is divided into four sections: Western Section with the length of approx. 9.2 km and 9 stations, Central Section with the length of 6.3 km and 7 stations, North-East Section with the length of 7.7 km and 6 stations, South-East Section with the length of 7.1 km and 6 stations. The construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 and its operation started in March 2015. The paper focuses on challenges encountered and solved and lessons learnt during construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw."

This research work discusses the development of a two-dimensional model that represents the flow that occurs in the inlet section of hydrocyclones. The governing equations are the two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in cylindrical polar coordinates with primitive variable formulations. In this approach, no assumptions have been made other than independence in the axial direction. The full two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in the r-a plane is used. The commonly used simplifying assumption of axisymmetry is not used. A numerical technique based on a newly developed spectral-difference method is used to solve the equations. The spectral-difference method is a multi-domain, and multi-dimensional extension of the Jacobi polynomial collocation technique. The computational grid for the inlet section is composed of 25 sub-domains which result from five partitions in the angular direction and five partitions in the radial direction. Several test cases are used to validate the appropriateness of the numerical model.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

Galvanic contact, occurring between electricall y conducting minerals in flotation pulps, may affect the nature of mineral surfaces and influence their floatabilities. Rest potential and galvanic current measurements were made on an electrode combination of pyrite and pyrrhotite under nitrogen, air and oxygen aeration conditions, and the results were correlated with their oxygen-consuming characteristics and flotation behaviors. The galvanic contact improved the floatability of pyrrhotite, but adversely affected that of pyrite. Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron on pyrrhotite decreased whereas that on pyrite increased when these minerals were held in contact. An electrochemical mechanism was proposed for the observed behaviors.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of the underground mines operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). DMLZ is located approximately 1,500 m below ground level, where dominant rock types are skarn and diorite. The DMLZ mine and layout was designed based on the previous mine located above ground, the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). The DOZ mine, located approximately 1,000 m below ground level, was a proven success, with a maximum capacity of 80K tonnes per day. During the production ramp up, which started in 2015, the DMLZ experienced several seismic events. The most significant event occurred in January 2018 with a recorded magnitude of more than 2.0 Mw, which resulted in a 14-month delay of the undercutting until March 2019. The significant event in January 2018 required the DMLZ to apply several adjustments related to the mining plan to help ensure it could continue development and achieve production target safely. This paper will describe the changes in the DMLZ mine plan as a response to the seismic activity at the mine, the reason behind the decisions being made to change the mine plan and strategy, as well as strengths and weaknesses between the previous plan compared with the new plan.

The Ernest Henry copper-gold project is located in North West Queensland, Australia and commenced production in late August 1997. Utilizing a philosophy of selecting the biggest proven equipment available Ernest Henry at full production ¥ill treat 9 Mtpa through a single grinding line over a 15 year mine life. 350.000 tonnes of concentrate a year will be produced, containing 95,000 tonnes of copper and 120,000 ounces of gold. The two mills recently commissioned at the Ernest Henry Copper/Gold Mine are a 10.4m x 5.1m (34 ft x 16.75 ft) SAG Mill and a 6.1m x 8.4m (20 ft x 27.5 ft) ball mill. The mills have a power draw of 11 MW (14745 hp) and 5.5 MW (7373 hp) respectively. While the SAG Mill is not the largest SAG Mill in the world, it is the largest shell-supported SAG Mill in the world. The Ernest Henry mills epitomize the new standard design of large grinding mills. The design was introduced more than 20 years ago and has been further developed from extensive experience with grinding mills, and the need to produce a design, which overcomes the recognized problems of large mills. The result is a design with the potential to be used for mills up to the largest for which machine tools can be found to fabricate and machine them, currently approximately 15m (48') overall diameter.

In many cases, substantial time may elapse between the exploration stage and a serious detailed planning stage which has the objective of putting a mineral property into production. This is always true where properties change ownership and new partners are brought in for joint venture situations. Such conditions make it imperative that the recording of complete and accurate geological data for the property is done during the active part of the exploration phase and accomplished by competent geologists and engineers. This work should not be left to helpers and technicians. Furthermore, it should not have to be redone years after the actual drilling was accomplished, when either those involved have parted company or those present have lost the touch and feel of their part of the exploration program and must rely on a memory sketchy in detail, at the best. All of this emphasizes the importance of thorough geological evaluation and reporting during the exploration program. To evaluate and comment on the application of geological data by a mine planning department, we must assume (1) that sufficient diamond drill holes have outlined the existence of a potentially economic ore deposit, and (2) that the next step is to obtain the required information to allow a detailed feasibility study. This paper will comment on: 1. what types of geological information are required, 2. how it can be obtained, and 3. comments on the application of this information by the mine planners.

We are currently doing work on three ways to improve the performance of our froth flotation systems. One development is the use of a cationic flocculent added to the feed of the froth cells. This does give some improvement in ash of the product particularly in a situation where there is a good bit of clay present. Difficulty is usually experienced with clay carrying over with the water contained in the froth product and also adhering to the coal surfaces. Addition of the flocculent to the flotation feed preferentially flocculates the clay causing it to drop into the tails. The results of some laboratory test work on Pittsburgh 88 Seam coal in Eastern Ohio is shown in Table 1. [ ]

Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence (?Smax) induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/I -p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. I (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goaf may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between ?Smax/m vs. h/1-p. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data.
