This paper describes two-lane dual motorway tunnels under construction in Bergen. The tunnels are part of a by-pass motorway system throuth the most congested area of the city of Bergen. The tunnels are unique due to their length, heavy traffic, longitudinal ventilation system and the use of a tunnel boring machine, or "TBM", to excavate through hard rock. The tunnels are being built by The Norwegian Public Road Administration and the TBM was delivered by the Robbins Company. The diameter of the TBM is 7.8 m and the tunnel profile is cut by conventional drill and blasting methods in the tunnel's lower half to attain a two lane motorway tunnel. This paper also describes proposed fjord crossings along the Norwegian west coast where the TBM may be used due to its great advantages in comparison to conventional drill and blasting methods.

This paper provides a summary of a two-day conference held in New Orleans in March 1980, entitled "Tunnel Instrumentation: Benefits and Implementation." The conference addressed two major questions: First, what are the benefits of using instrumentation during tunnel construction? Second, what contractual relations should be established for conducting instrumentation programs during tunnel construction? Each session consisted of brief formal presentations and extensive panel discussions with participation from attendees. Attendees included owners, designers, contractors, and instrumentation specialists. This paper presents a consensus of views expressed during the conference.

INTRODUCTION Typically, uranium mills produce slurred tailings which are transported by pipeline to a tailings impoundment. The slurried tailings contain about 250 solids (75% liquids) by volume and, depending on the milling process, have a high or low ph. Despite decanting water from the tailings pond and losses by evaporation and seepage, Staub (1978) estimates that for lined impoundments over half of the input water is stored in the tailings. As long as the impounded tailings remain in a loose and saturated state, potential hazards exist and include potential for short and long-term seepage from the impoundments and the potential for large scale release and movement of liquified tailings should an embankment fail. The breach of an earthen dam on July 16, 1979 at Church Rock, New Mexico, and the subsequent release of 100 million gallons of water and liquified uranium tailings, underlines the potential hazard. Loose saturated tailings also have a high potential of liquefaction during earthquakes (Charlie and Wardwell, 1979; Martin, Finn and Seed, 1978; and Mittal and Morgenstern, 1976). If the tailings could be dewatered, the liner's integrity would become less critical, longterm seepage and settlements would be greatly reduced. In addition, the potential for tailings liquefaction from an embankment failure or earthquake would be greatly reduced. This paper reviews the concept, criteria, and design of various proposed interior drainage systems to dewater the tailings after deposition. ADVANTAGES OF INTERIOR DRAINAGE The primary purpose of interior drainage systems for uranium mill tailings impoundments is dewatering the tailings as rapidly and as thoroughly as possible. The expected benefits of this new technology are: • Reduction of potential seepage losses by decreasing the hydraulic head. • Reduce earthquake liquefaction potential of the tailings by inducing non-saturated conditions and/or lowering the water pressure. • Reduce the potential for large-scale release and movement of tailings should an embankment fail. • Stabilize the tailings to permit early reclamation. • Recovery and potential recycling of tailings liquid. • Inhibiting long-term seepage out of the impoundment by inducing nonsaturated conditions to provide capillary suction in the tailings.

The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand for the material. This paper develops a general method of evaluating these needs and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can be projected to establish future requirements. This demand forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of upper Michigan.

Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use feedstocks with higher Ti02 content and lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the world's Ti02 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37% to 54% Ti02. An industry growth rate of 25% in the next 10 years, combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower mining grades for rutile (95% P02) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55% to 90% P02), means that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite.

In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

Wastewater treatment systems, both industrial and municipal, produce large quantities of sludge which require disposal. Sludge disposal poses significant environmental liabilities, logistical problems, and economic burdens. Minergy Corporation has developed and implemented several new technologies for the recycling of such high volume wastes as sludge, ash, and foundry sand. These technologies perform mineral recovery from the waste material, converting them into construction material and industrial feed stocks which are inert, marketable products. With a continuously operating processing system installed at the waste source, these technologies reduce handling, eliminate downstream liabilities, and reduce disposal costs.

Following the conceptual idea of a Continuous Elution Process early in 1982, the system was successfully pilot plant tested at Western Mining's Kambalda gold plant in December 1982. As a consequence of these tests the Ok Tedi elution ciruit design was changed from batch operation to continuous operation resulting in a reduction in the number of similarly sized elution columns from five operating with one standby to one operating with one standby and halving the process steam requirements. In addition to providing significant capital and operating cost savings the continuous process was simpler to operate than the batch process.

Through the early stages of metamorphism, when diffusion is the predominant mineral forming process. there is a tendency toward homogenization of rock units; but there is also zoning resulting from differing primary lithology and structure. Later stages of metamorphism, when infiltration occurs, tend to intensify zoning within the rock mass. The above concepts have been borne out in exploration of talc deposits and skarns. Initially, geologic mapping and soil sampling are directed to understanding mineralogy and petrology. Later, seismic methods are employed to further define lithology in the subsurface. Magnetometer surveys can also define some metamorphic units efficiently. Then, drilling must ensue to confirm lithology and determine extent of mineralization.

Conventional methods of controlling abandoned mine fires include: loading out, inundation, fire barriers, flushing, and surface sealing. This paper describes a proposed fire-control technique utilizing a new explosive fragmentation method. An impervious barrier is created by using explosive energy and strategic emplacement in boreholes drilled from the surface. Blast round design, average fragment size, and impermeability of the fragmentation barrier are discussed. This barrier, created by the blasted floor rock, could also be used to fill in the open space in abandoned mines for subsidence prevention or control.

Equations are derived to allow for different mean velocities of axial flow for different sizes of particles in fully mixed ball mills. The equations are modified to allow for the exit classification that occurs in grate-discharge autogenous and semiautogenous tumbling mills. An approximate treatment is given that applies for other forms of residence time distribution, provided that the mill contents are close to fully mixed.

In the Basin and Range Province of Nevada, geophysics is used to assist exploration for bulk minable gold deposits, particularly over pediments. It is employed for mapping thickness of alluvium and Tertiary valley fill, for mapping covered structures, and for identifying alteration zones. In addition to potential field and seismic methods, three different electrical and electromagnetic methods are frequently used, resistivity-induced polarization, controlled source audiomagnetotellurics, and time domain EM. A review and comparison of the principles of these methods, illustrated by case histories, is the topic of this paper.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a graphics-based computer model to assess operator visibility for continuous miners, shuttle cars, and scoops. Using digitized drawings of the machine, the program can analyze visibility for both 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male operators. This model was used to predict 95th percentile male operator visibility for two shuttle car designs. These results were then compared to those obtained from a manual assessment of visibility using the actual shuttle cars. The methods showed good correlation except for several cases which were attributed to imprecise digitization of the machines.

The New Celebration Gold Mine is located 32 km south of the regional mining centre of Kalgoorlie. The current mill throughput is 1.7 million tonnes per annum with a gold production of around 120,000 ounces per year. The main source of ore for the mill comes from the Hampton Boulder and Pernatty pits. Over the last two years the oxide reserves from these pits have been depleted and the harder primary sulphide ores are now being processed. This change has led to a decrease in cyanide extractable gold.

INTRODUCTION The potential health impact from uranium milling operations is mainly associated with long-term releases of radioactive contaminants from the mill tailings.(1,2) The major mechanisms for mitigating these potential releases focus on increasing the tailings containment with the addition of migration barriers such as thick earthen covers and clay liners. Some limited investigation has also focused on reducing the radionuclide source terms. This alternative approach has some desirable features, but stringent cost requirements are placed upon source removal methods in order for them to be economically favorable. A cost effectiveness evaluation is presented herein, in which costs for containment methods are used to establish maximum cost guidelines for the source removal methods. The 230U decay chain, shown in Figure 1 contains the radioisotopes of major concern, 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn and its short-lived alpha-emitting daughters, When the uranium is removed in the milling process, these isotopes, which are normally not removed remain in the tailings solids. The general pathways to the environment from uranium mill tailings are depicted in Figure 2. The dominant pathways are radon to the atmosphere and radium and thorium to a groundwater aquifer. The magnitude of the contaminants released into these pathways can be characterized by the following parameters: 1. The 230Th and 226Ra content. 2. The emanating power for radon. The fraction of radon generated that is free to migrate. 3. The leach rates. Source reduction methods seek to reduce the magnitude of any or all of these parameters. In general the dose rates are proportional to the source terms. For radon production the source term is proportional to the product of the radium concentration, R, and the emanating power, E, so that the risk is reduced by the same factor that reduces RE. For example, if the radium content is reduced by 95 percent, but E is increased by a factor of two, then the dose rates are reduced by an order of magnitude. Recently, in the United States, questions of possible deleterious synergistic health effects of the gaseous and particulate components in the diesel exhaust and mineral and coal dust have been the impetus for extensive research by several agencies. At the present time, diesel engines are tested and approved for use in gassy and non-gassy underground metal and non-metal mines under Parts 31, 32, and 36 of Title30 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Diesel-powered equipment for use in underground coal mines, though not explicitly addressed in the law, is administered under Parts 32 and 36 of Title 30, with Part 36 being applied in the case of equipment working inby the last open crosscut or in the return airways. Operation of diesel equipment in underground mines has the potential for serious health and safety hazards from the gases, vapors, and particulates in the exhaust. Therefore, various countries have rules and regulations for the safe deployment of diesel equipment. The applicable laws and regulations from several countries who have long experience with diesel-powered equipment in their mines are reviewed. Four major areas have been addressed: (1) testing and approval procedures of diesel engines, (2) ambient mine air quality specifications, (3) frequency of sampling and location of samples, and (4) air quality specifications in splits where diesel-powered equipment are operated. The review indicates that most regulations generally consider four possible hazards: (1) toxic components in the engine exhaust, (2) ignition of flammable atmospheres by the engine or electrical equipment, (3) fire hazards presented by the engine fuel oil and by combustible material that might come in contact with the equipment, and (4) mechanical hazards. There is a remarkable similarity in the laws with regard to engine design, testing and approval procedures. However, the aspects with regard to mine air quality and quantity are quite variable-- from a general statement to very specific standards for many different diesel exhaust constituents. However, the laws with regard to synergistic effects of diesel exhaust components and other mine air contaminants are an exception.
