INTRODUCTION The increasing price of gold and silver over the past 10 years has caused increasing activity in the exploration, evaluation and development of precious metals projects. Many of these deposits are relatively low grade and short lived which makes them economically sensitive to the major project variables such as metal price, capital cost, operating cost and of course, tonnage and grade. These deposits often have a high variability (a coefficient of variation -- o/u -- of 2 to 5) and an intermixing of ore and waste, making ac- curate ore reserve estimation difficult, especially when using traditional estimation techniques. Often, the estimation errors are not the 10-20% that we see in base metal deposits, but the errors in grade and tonnage can be as high as 50%, which can obviously have a very substantial impact on project Recent developments in geostatistics when coupled with a sound geologic under- standing of the deposit can significantly improve reserve estimates of these variable precious metals deposits. Examples will be given of actual deposits where the traditional estimates were significantly different from the mining reality. An attempt will be made to explain the applicable geostatistical tools with a minimum of geostatistical jargon and without complicated formulas. The key to improving the reserve estimates is a clear understanding of the deposit geology and especially the structural controls, the use of local estimation techniques that recognize the intermixing of ore and waste and the effect of selective mining on recoverable reserves, and the use of a global reserve estimation technique to check the results of local estimation. Geologic Controls The vast majority of gold and silver deposits being mined or developed in the western United States would be classified as epithermal deposits. These are formed by hydrothermal fluids (hot water) flowing upward through the rocks and depositing the precious metals as the fluids cool or reach areas of lower pressure or favorable chemical sites. These environments are similar to present day hot springs-type environments with some deposits being clearly associated with surface hot springs such as the Homestake McLaughlin deposit in northern California. These hydrothermal deposits can occur in sedimentary rocks resulting in deposits such as those of the Carlin district or the Jerritt Canyon deposit or the hydrothermal systems can occur in volcanic rocks forming deposits such as Round Mountain, Manhattan or Paradise Peak. The mechanisms of formation were similar in either case with the solution flow controlled by geologic structure and precious metals deposited when the conditions of temperataure, pressure and chemical environment were favorable. The gold and silver hearing solutions travel through permeable faults and fracture systems depositing the metals along these channels. The grades are often highest in the central parts of these conduits (veins) with lower grades in the surrounding rocks. An understanding of the nature, distribution and orientation of these plumbing systems is important to a realistic reserve estimate. The point to be emphasized here is that, good, sound geology in the form of geologic mapping, logging of rotary chip samples and a few carefully logged core holes can signifi- cantly improve an ore reserve estimate.

In mining industry, one of the simplest methods to smooth the standard deviation of a given ore controlled property is to build longitudinal blending piles. The effect of homogeneization is obtained due to the fact that an entire cross-section of the pile is reclaimed at each time. The variance of the pile output is the sum of the internal cross-section slice variance plus the reclaimed slice variance. While the first term is a tipical short-term parameter and is absorbed by the process, the second one may be or may not be absorbed. The goal of designing blending piles is to minimize the reclaimed slice variance. Conditional Simulation as described in this paper, is an alternative method to do it. It is devised to design longitudinal blending piles, taking into consideration economical, geometrical and statistical parameters of the ore to be blended, in order to estimate the resulting effect. It presents advantages in relation to other methods for its adaptability and flexibility in simulating pile performances.

The problem addressed was to develop automated image analysis of metal welds to replace unreliable and costly 100% visual inspection. The objective was to evaluate neural networks combined with features from gray level surfaces. Photomicrographs of the welded seam in Zircaloy-4 channels used in nuclear fuel rod assemblies were examined. The methodology used was to select a set of morphological feature coefficients from Bessel Fourier morphological feature coefficients extracted from digitized photomicrographs. The selected morphological feature coefficients were then used to train a neural network. The approach was verified initially by successfully training a neural network using the known, secondary chemistry of the alloy welds. The results were good. The Bessel Fourier coefficients captured sufficient information from the metallographic images to distinguish weld quality. This approach has the combined advantages of compressing the images through Bessel Fourier coefficients and give the ability to rapidly process large amounts of data using neural networks.

The subject of this paper is broad and complex. Secondly, it is near and dear to the authors' hearts. Therefore, it doesn't seem possible to deal with every aspect of it in less space than a good size textbook. Also, if we dealt with all of the basics of feasibility studies and report preparation, we would cover a lot of material available in the literature, and would have to minimize our editorial comments. In view of these limiting realities, we have chosen to discuss selected facets of the subject, and to provide several comments which stem from our personal experiences during the past 20 years. "Think Ahead" hen someone is undergoing training to command a large ship, the following short phrase is engraved in his memory: "Think Ahead." The reason is simple enough. A battleship, aircraft carrier or oil tanker cannot change directions quickly, and if one waits to a what the other ship is going to do, there may be twisted metal and bodies scattered all over the ocean floor. The commanding officer has to use radar, forward rind aft lookouts, experience, common sense, intuition, weather forecasts, and everything else available to him to avoid trouble. Remember the USS Stark, and the fate of its captain? The fact the Stark was hit by a "friendly" missile didn't lessen the damage. How about running into a mine? Is it an excuse that no one thought about the possibility of a minefield ahead of the ship? The point is, relative to feasibility studies, that its prospective authors, and especially the commander of the efforts required to create it, must "think ahead" from the moment of their association with 4 mining activity. Breakage of rock by machine is one of the major methods of excavation. With the development of modern engineering techniques, the advantages of using this method have become even greater. Improving efficiency and reducing the cost of rock breakage is the main goal of mechanizing the rock-breaking operation. For a given stratum, the efficiency of a machine excavation depends, to a large extent, on the design and method of application of the tools used. In a planetary cutter head, the subcutter heads move like planets around the main drive shaft. The general structure of the cutter head is shown in Fig. 1. As shown in this illustration, the main drive shaft (1-1) is connected to the tie bar (1) and, thereby, to a gear(5) that meshes with a fixed-gear ring(2). The subcutter head (4) is rigidly connected to the gear (5) by the subcutter-head axis (2-2). When the main drive shaft (1-1) rotates, the subcutter head (4) rotates around the axis (2-2), under the action of the tie bar and with the help of sleeve pipe (3).At the same time, axis (2-2) also rotates around the main shaft (1-1). A simple modelling methodology has been proposed to predict the performance of industrial coal flotation circuit based on the observations made on the actual performance. The solid content in the tailings of the coal flotation circuit has been identified as a lode-star to predict the performance in terms of yield and ash content of the concentrate. The modelling parameters are directly measurable.

Sintering of iron ore has undergone a dramatic development world-wide. Today, the annual world production amounts to approximately 600 million tons. At present, the sintering process in competition with pelletizing, seems to offer certain advantages inasmuch as it allows the use of solid fuels. Also, its charging behaviour in the blast furnace is, in general, considered as being better than that of pellets. This is true, in particular, for the charging behaviour and the gas permeability in relation to the grain size. Moreover, instead of charging limestone into the blast furnace, for instance, the basic components which are necessary for the burden materials can generally be supplied in a simpler and more cost-effective way by using basic sinter instead of basic pellets. While in sintering, with basicity rising to the range of 1.6 to 1.8 CaO : SiO2, the capacity increases and the sinter quality shows improvements in most of its characteristics, the pro¬duction of basic pellets generally requires a higher fuel rate, when compared to acid pellets, while production capacity decreases and some of the quality characteristics deteriorate.

A method of monitoring production, information, i.e., raw tonnage and machine state, from each working section has been developed. The method is based on the sensing of electrical parameters in each section load center, and the reporting of this information through the existing mine-wide monitoring system. A decision-theoretic type of pattern classification technique has been used to define the machine states. The basis of the method is presented in this paper, along with a proposed hardware and software implementation scheme. Information issues central to the development and use of the proposed production monitoring system are also discussed.

Planning the development of the Quartz Hill molybdenum open pit mine in Southeast Alaska required a number of special considerations. Located in mountainous glaciated terrain, about 3.8 m (150 in.) of annual precipitation (with annual snowfall over 10.2 m (400 :in.) was a primary consideration. Mine planning included muskeg and snow removal, avalanche control, clearing timber, water quality control, dust control, seismicity, mine schedule, work force and reclamation. Quartz Hill is in an environmentally sensitive area which has required extensive environmental baseline data collection, four Environmental Impact statements (EIS) and a large number of permits.

Geochemical returns from commercial analytical laboratories are often delayed because of postal and other bulk distribution inefficiencies. Consequently, minerals exploration programs are handicapped due to insufficient time for treatment, analysis, and diagnosis of the data. The minerals industry lacks a system for rapid transmission of geochemical data which allows immediate entry into statistical and plotting routines. Over the past three years, Houston International Minerals Corporation (HIMCO) has developed a computer-based system to receive, treat, and distribute geochemical data. In the past two years, Bondar-Clegg (Denver) and Chemex (Vancouver) have developed systems to transmit' data directly to HIMCO via the world-wide Boeing Computer Services (BCS) network. The main benefits to HIMCO have been ten less days for reporting turnaround, ten less days for keypunching, less data handling, accuracy. The benefits to the laboratories have been improved in-house data management, reporting, and HIMCO's increased geochemical activity.

Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) currently supports the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management in developing and evaluating analytical methods for assessing the suitability of sites for geologic disposal of high-level radioactive waste. The research includes consideration of hydrological, geomechanical , geochemical , and waste package components and the evaluation of the degree of coupling that can occur between two or more of these components. The PNL effort and those of other research groups investing potential waste sites in the U.S. and abroad are producing a suite of computer codes to analyze the long-term performace of the proposed repository sites. This paper summarizes the ongoing research in rock mechanics at PNL involving flow through jointed rock. The objective of this research is to develop a methodology for modeling the coupled mechanical-hydrological process of flow through joints and then attempt to validate a "simple" model using small -scale laboratory test data as a basis for judging whether the approach has merit. This paper discusses the laboratory tests being conducted to develop s joint behavioral constitutive model for the numerical method under development and the modeling approach being considered.

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes. This paper briefly presents various alternatives to reprocess gold tailings, with examples. These include the use of centrifugal gravity separators, CIL, magnetic separation, flotation and pressure oxidation.

A commercialized dry gravity concentrator is operating on an alluvial gold deposit in the Boludo Mining District, State of Sonora, Mexico. The technology base of the process is the Rotary Air Concentrator (a dry circular air jig) that recovers gold from the desert sand resource. An overview of the Mexican operation and the dry concentration technology is presented. Application of the dry technology to pretreat­ment of heap leach feeds and other heavy minerals is a pos­sibility.

The Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project (FRIRP) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is currently using Landsat Thematic Mapper? and air- borne-visible-infrared-imaging-spectrometer (AVIRIS) data along with planned thermal-infrared data and interferometry-synthetic-aperture radar (IFSAR) data to assess the industrial-minerals quality and quantity along the Colorado-Wyoming Front Range Urban Corridor and to characterize surrounding areas. Landsat? satellite data show synoptic views of the corridor, which may readily be used to identify potential regions of permissible terrain, such as river drain-ages, pediment surfaces, upturned lithology, and bed- rock exposures, where various types of deposits may occur. Descriptive models of these deposit types are used to define the physical features that need to be recognized and characterized. In the case of Landsat? data, the measured light is either reflected or partly absorbed by surface materials, depending on the wave- length of the light, which allows coarse mineral classifications to be made.

As more phosphate deposits are discovered and new mines are developed, the necessity of critically evaluating various rocks for phosphoric acid production recurs ever more frequently. This need is accentuated by the increasing number of, fertilizer plants being constructed on deep water at various locations to serve world markets and to take advantage of locally-available sulfur or sulfur-bearing ores. A major proportion of all phosphate rock mined is consumed by wet-process plants and this acid in turn is consumed, usually captively, in the manufacture of fertilizer. It is apparent, therefore, that the first question asked by the developer of a new deposit is - How will it work in a wet-process plant? and conversely, when developing a deep water, project, one of the early studies required is - Which of the available rocks shall we use? NEW ROUTES - 63rd STREET CROSSTOWN The New Route construction along East 63rd Street in Manhattan began in 1969 with the East River tunnel connecting Manhattan and Queens. The 63rd Street Line, once in Queens, is planned to connect to another new route called the Queens By Pass or Super Express (See Exhibit 1) which would connect to the Queens Boulevard Line at Forest Hills. The purpose of the Queens By Pass was to alleviate subway congestion to and from the Borough of Queens, whose population had rapidly expanded during and after World War II. The existing Queens Boulevard subway lines (the "E" and the "F" trains) are almost filled to capacity at their terminal stations with passengers from Long Island. Passengers boarding trains enroute from the local Queens stations have difficulty boarding crowded trains, and, at times, cannot board the trains. The New Routes, thus, were to give additional train capacity into Manhattan and thereby relieve the crowded conditions along the Queens Boulevard corridor. PROFILE - METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The portion of the New Route passing east-west under East 63rd Street on Manhattan (See Exhibit 2) had to snake beneath intersecting structures running north and south, such as the Con Rail tracks below Park Avenue and the 80 ft deep Lexington Avenue Express track structure along Lexington Avenue. The successful demonstration of a precast segmented concrete liner in the Lexington Market Section of the Baltimore Regional Rapid Transit System (BRRTS) is an important step forward in our continuing efforts to control tunneling costs in the USA. In addition to its contribution to specific savings in future tunnels, this demonstration project has taught other lessons about the U.S. tunneling industry and about the process of "mainlining" new and improved technology into that industry. This paper will present an overview of the Lexington Market Demonstration Project from its beginnings to the present time. In addition, it will discuss other implications which have an important bearing on the extent to which tunnels will be used in future transportation systems in the USA. THE HISTORY Precast segmented concrete tunnel liners are not new. An unbolted version was reportedly used in New York City in the 1930's. The modern bolted configuration has been in use in foreign countries for more than 15 years. Indeed, consideration of the use of precast bolted segments below the water table in the USA dates back to the BART system in San Francisco in the 1960's. At that time, they were evaluated and it was concluded that the state of the art would not allow segments to be precast to the required tolerances. Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter.
