A new coal interface detection (CID) method is under investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This novel concept is based on utilizing a passive infrared system (FIR) to measure temperature changes associated with the cutting of coal and adjacent strata. For this method to work successfully, a definite mechanical/hardness contrast must exist between coal and rock. Advantages include that FIR responds instantaneously at the coal-rock interface and it is minimally affected by dust and/or water sprays. Based on preliminary tests, results indicate that the PIR method can be applied successfully in mines having a hard immediate roof.

The prediction of damage to a structure that is to be undermined is generally a two step process. First, the expected ground movements (the displacements, slopes, curvatures, and strains) are estimated using available (often empirical) predictive methods or survey data from a site of comparable geology, topography, and mining geometry. Second, the prospects for damage to the structure are assessed by comparing the expected ground movements to tolerable limits, some of which appear in the technical literature as damage criteria. The inverse problem of relating observed building damage to causative ground movements involves essentially the same elements. In either case, the usefulness of published damage criteria to subsidence problems may be limited in all but the most elementary cases. This paper considers several cases where structural behavior and site specific details had to be taken into account in assessing the relationship between damage and ground movements.

"INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The world needs visionary people to break new ground and bring development forward. The human race has an inherent power and lust to explore and push borders, but also to connect and bring people together. Transport of people and goods has through history been a key factor to develop societies and increase collaboration between people and regions. Today, in the era of globalization, efficient transport systems are still vital for further development. Often, ideas of bold projects, like long bridges or tunnels, have been raised long before those projects are realized and actually built. This shows that visions must gradually be transformed into feasible business cases and sustainable political solutions. In some cases also technological development is necessary to make visions come true. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, indeed a visionary engineer, completed the oldest underwater tunnel in the world when the Thames Tunnel in London was opened in 1843. This tunnel is still in operation and now part of London’s rail transport system. Another milestone for the tunnelling industry was passed when the 54 km long Seikan tunnel in Japan was opened in 1988 after more than 15 years of construction. This tunnel is presently the world’s longest railway tunnel. Together with the 50.5 km long Channel tunnel between the UK and France, which has the longest undersea portion 37.9 km, they constitute examples of pioneering engineering projects that bring the industry forward. In 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be opened and then becomes the longest railway tunnel in the world with its 57.1 km. The trend is obvious that tunnels throughout the world are getting longer and longer. The Brenner Basis Tunnel presently under construction will yet again break the record being 64 km long. Presently, a number of even longer tunnels are planned and under design, some of these also have very long subsea portions, e.g. Bohai Straight Tunnel (123 km), Irish Sea Tunnel (around 100 km) and the Helsinki – Tallin fixed link (approximately 90 km). Northern Europe sees an increasing demand on efficient transport corridors to meet the growth of freight transportation between the Scandinavian Peninsula and central-Eastern Europe. Sustainable solutions will be required, and a shift from road/maritime transports to rail is imperative. Consequently, this paper describes yet another visionary project, a fixed railway link between Sweden and Germany, the Shortcut, to enhance traffic between these regions and to make it greener. It is true that this project still requires some work from politicians, economists and engineers to be realized, however, building a 100 km long tunnel under the Baltic Sea may become reality sooner than we think."

The uncertainty associated with a reserve estimate has generally been expressed as a subjective ranking rather than a quantitative expression of either reliability or uncertainty. These rankings of estimate reliability have taken a very nonquantitative bent as well. For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission definition of proven reserves is given as: Reserves for which (a) quantity is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, workings, or drill holes, grade and/or quality are computed from the results of detailed sampling and (b) the sites for inspection, sampling and measurement are spaced so closely and the geologic character is so well-defined that size, shape, depth and mineral content of reserves are well-established. The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. The effectiveness of a flotation column is due principally to the addition of wash water to the froth phase. The wash water flow rate can be significant, especially so for systems yielding a high weight recovery of fine solids, e.g. zinc sulfide flotation. Therefore, it is critical to recognize and assess the impact of the water addition upon upstream separation stages. This paper examines column flotation circuit configurations using data from a portable 2 t/day pilot plant. The objective is to provide an improved basis for column design, either as a retrofit or as part of a new circuit.

Dwindling economic deposits of rutile (TiO2) prompted research on recovering it from secondary sources. One such resource is in Southwestern Turkey feldspar mining rejects that contain 5%-6% TiO2 mostly rutile. Previous studies could only upgrade the TiO2 to 36% TiO2 grade, claiming that the leftover flotation reagents on the surfaces of rutile and host minerals detrimentally affected upgrading of the rutile. As a potential remedy to this concern, a laboratory sample (from an operating feldspar mine in Milas, Turkey) was first caustic scrubbed, then air calcined at 400°C to evaporate the oily reagents. Subsequent physical separation of rutile included wet screening, gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation technologies. Such processes indeed improved the grade of the rutile concentrate up to 83 % TiO2 Low recovery of the TiO2 (<20%), was attributed to lack of full liberation of rutile, even at 125x44 micron range; interference with impurity minerals such as sphene and zircon; and simply the process inefficiency in upgrading the fine grains through conventional separation technologies for heavy minerals.

Remote sensing is being tested for its ability to identify the severity of impact on streams that are subjected to contaminated mine drainage (CMD) in the Southern Anthracite Coalfield of Pennsylvania. Airborne digital multispectral video images of acidic and near-neutral CMD are being compared with field spectra, water chemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology. Spectral differences in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are caused by the presence of schwertmannite in the acidic precipitates and ferrihydrite in the near- neutral precipitates. The acidic CMD averages 1,500 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with schwertmannite; the near-neutral CMD averages 87 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with ferrihydrite.

The ability to target, delineate, excavate, and produce local resources is essential to the establishment of man&apos;s long-term presence in space. Many procedures and equipment utilized to mine resources here on Earth may be directly applicable on the lunar surface, while others may need extensive redefinition and development. This paper compares, for a lunar base, the alternative of burrowing into and below the lunar surface with that of surface mining. A conceptual underground mechanical excavator is presented.

A recently developed model is used as a tool to optimize blast designs based on the continuing combination of full scale blast assessment and performance prediction. The use of this tool has allowed to evaluate present blasting practices and proposed designs through a better under-standing of the influence of the various blast parameters. The empirical model has a modular structure covering all aspects of blast performance including 30 fragmentation, potential rock damage and 30 muckpile profile prediction. The modules are assisted by a terrain model which is compatible to most mine mapping systems, and a blast design editor. The evaluation is summarized in a blast management module. Various studies have recently been undertaken using the model to qualify and improve blast designs with respect to wall stability, optimized fragmentation and muckpile distribution, as well as to the control of the environmental effects such as blast vibration and airblast overpressure. To verify the predictions of the modeling, full scale blast assessment techniques were used to qualify blast geometry, explosives and initiation performance, rock movement, muckpile distribution, near- and far-field vibration levels and airblast ovepressures. The model provides a tool to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control. The modeling results are presented in a visual form which allows simple comparisons of proposed blast designs. Additionally, the model can be used for detailed analysis and blast management.

"The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant panel apparatus was used to determine the relevant thermal characteristics of the materials: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1, and TP4, were derived from the data, then were developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and represent a simpler approach to quantifying these combustible hazards. INTRODUCTION The potential fire hazard from combustible mine materials is a major concern that can impact the safety of mine workers. Combustible materials tend to be solids and within this category there exist degrees of flammability and fire resistance. These materials may be readily ignitable or they may be able to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Presently, no simple methodology exists to assess these possible fire behaviors and quantify the resultant fire hazards. Thus, better knowledge of the thermal properties and chemical characteristics of combustible materials is of great importance to the safety of mine workers. Tewarson [1994] developed a methodology which he subsequently used to evaluate the ignition and fire resistant properties of combustible mine materials, but these efforts are more than 20 years old, and do not include many of the new materials used in mines today. The standard practice that has evolved for a combustible material to be approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for use in underground coal mines is to conduct extensive and costly large-scale experiments on each new material that is used in a particular mine operation. Results of such tests provide pass/fail answers to the questions of a material’s flammability or fire resistance, yet they provide little, if any, information that will lead to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. Therefore, there is a need to quantify material flammability properties and to develop a methodology to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials. During the heating and ignition stages of combustible materials, properties such as smolder susceptibility, minimum surface temperature for ignition, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and heat of gasification are known to be important [Apte, 2006]. During the flaming stage, additional parameters, such as the heat of combustion, heat release rate, flame spread rate, yields of soot/smoke, and toxic gas production become more important as the flame is sustained and spreads. In very general terms, the heat flux incident on the surface of a solid combustible not only controls the rate of temperature increase of the local fuel surfaces, resulting in expulsion of fuel vapors that sustain the flaming process, but also the heating of other combustible surfaces that subsequently ignite and spread flame."

Modern high-performance disc filters such as the BoVac Disc Filter have set new standards in applications where large capacities of solids, liquids and air have to be managed through the filters. These disc filters have an enormous hydraulic capacity. For applications in mineral processing - with a special focus on tailings – which typically have high solids throughputs but low filtrate and air flows, this capacity can be used to expand the filtration area while maintaining the benefits of very good cake discharge even with thin cakes (4-5 mm) and a high filter speed. Research work over the last century has proven that increasing the filter area should be achieved by increasing the disc diameter. Because adding more discs leads to big problems with the cake discharge. However, as the disc diameter increases, the filter segments become longer and heavier. A suitable compromise was therefore found by doing both. The result is the first vacuum disc filter that offers significantly more than 300 m² of filtration area, but has no more than 6 discs.

Construction of new installations was recently completed in the Port of Tubarao, Brazil, With this expansion the port, operated by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), has become the largest iron ore port in the world, with an annual throughput capacity of 60 million long tons. GROWTH OR IRON ORE EXPORTS Since its formation CVRD has steadily increased the shipment of iron ore to overseas markets. Starting with less than 100,000 tons in 1942, the yearly export volume grew to 1,500,000 tons in 1951, 5,000,000 tons in 1961 and 25,000,000 tons in 1971. The number of different grades of ore also increased during this period. Production of high grade pellets, starting in 1970, further increased the number of ore products to be shipped. In the same period the size of ore carriers increased twenty-fold to over 250,000 DWT.

This research developed and simulated a novel multi-indicator Fatigue Detection and Alert System (FDAS) designed to enhance fatigue detection accuracy in mining environments. The system integrates a comprehensive set of inputs: eye blink rate, eye closure duration, yawning frequency, distraction levels, Pre-shift Check-in Scores (Self-report) and Electroencephalography (EEG) Levels. Using MATLAB’s Fuzzy Logic Rule Viewer (FLRV) and Simulink, simulations demonstrated the FDAS’s robust ability to process these diverse physiological and behavioural indicators accurately. It effectively classified operator fatigue into low, moderate, and high fatigue levels, consistently providing appropriate outputs and corresponding intervention recommendations across various mixed-signal scenarios. The system achieved a calculated accuracy of 85.19% across 27 test entries, with a standard deviation of approximately 1.8459, confirming its reliability for real-time fatigue monitoring. These findings highlight the significant potential of this fuzzy logicbased approach to proactively identify early signs of fatigue, substantially enhancing safety and operational efficiency in demanding mining operations.

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem. Combined permeability and leaching tests were done in the laboratory on samples of clay bearing ores to evaluate a clay-stabilizing polymer&apos;s effectiveness in preventing the problem. Test results indicate that treating the ores with cationic polymers could maintain permeabilities two to five times greater than the long-term permeabilities present in untreated ores. Both alkaline (pH 8.5) and acidic (pH 2.0) leaches were used in the permeability leaching tests. To determine the reasons for the success of the clay stabilizing polymer, clay swelling tests and zeta potential measurements were made on untreated ore samples and on ore samples treated with the cationic polymer. Test results indicate the cationic polymer could reduce the degree of negative charge on fine particles and their tendency to disperse, as well as reduce clay swelling. Test results indicate a potentially beneficial effect on operating parameters such as capacity and injection pressure during leaching, if clays and fines are kept stabilized. This may be done by treating the zone of high fluid velocity near injection wells with cationic polymers.

The copper-silver-mercury orebody of Gortdrum Mines (Ireland) Limited is located 3 miles north of the town of Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland. A drilling programme from 1964 to 1966 delineated an ore¬body of 4.19 million tons of copper ore assaying 1.19% Cu and 0.75 ozs per ton Ag, which could be mined from an open pit. Testwork having shown that the ore was amenable to conventional flotation techniques, it was decided to build a concentrator of 500,000 tons ore per year capacity. Stripping of the open pit commenced in 1966 and in the autumn of 1967 the concentrator started up. The first shipments of concentrates were made to the smelter in Europe in late 1967. In the spring of the following year, word was received from the smelter that these early shipments contained between 1% and 2% Hg, and that the smelter could not accept further shipments of this quality.

In October, 1990, a fire started in a large underground coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. During fire-fighting activities, an explosion occurred and all personnel were evacuated. Safe re-entry into the mine was not possible and the mine was sealed. Recovery efforts began in January, 1991 and continued until March, 1991, when permanent underground seals were installed between the fire area and the mine openings. This paper describes an extensive atmospheric monitoring program conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PS&HTC) including the analysis of mine fire gases, natural ventilation, fan pressure and air quantity distribution.

The "mass balance" is unquestionably the most common class of problems for the process engineer&apos;. Closely related, mathematically, is the "heat balance". Every laboratory test requires a mass balance to describe the results. Mass balance calculations can be subdivided into several sub-categories based on whether the results are time dependant or not and depending on whether the input data are measurements that contain errors or are hypothetical values with no errors. Time dependent mass balances are dynamic process simulations and in addition to the conservation of mass constraints require kinetic data input. They are one step beyond simple mass balances.

"In recent years, the demand for Rare Earth Elements (REE) have grown rapidly due to increasing demand and global supply shortage. The supply deficit of these critical elements has encouraged the search for new sources of REEs, possibly Coal and Coal byproducts. Coals from certain parts of the world can be rich in REEs, and can approach a total concentration of 1000 ppm. Two Alaskan coal samples were investigated for the effect of size and density on the concentration of REEs on three selected size fractions. Flotation tests were conducted for finer fractions. Additionally Bottom ash and Fly Ash samples from a power plant have been examined for REE concentration. The results show that the upgrade potential for REEs on ash basis from whole coal basis ranges from 2:1 to 4:1 for Wishbone Hill and Healy coal samples respectively. Flotation of the finer fraction for both coal samples, conducted under similar conditions, reveal higher concentration of REE’s in the tailings. Both coal samples have a comparatively higher LREE content than HREE. Trends of REE content of the power plant products on ash basis revealed that Fly Ash has a slightly higher concentration of both LREE and HREE than Bottom Ash. Keywords: Rare Earth Elements, Coal, Coal Ash INTRODUCTION Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and their compounds are vital components in industrial, automotive, petrochemical, defense and medical applications. Dysprosium in combination with other elements is used in laser materials and nuclear control applications. Neodymium is present in magnets that are used in green power generation such as the manufacture of wind turbines and also in hybrid cars. Europium, Terbium and Yttrium are used for devices that have visual displays such as computer screens and laptops [1, 2]. REEs pose fewer environmental problems of disposal and recycling than conventional heavy metal counterparts [1]. Rare-earth metals are key ingredients for radar systems, avionics, modern national defense and satellites [2-8]. In the last 25 years China has been mining, processing and refining Rare Earth elements at affordable prices thus gaining a virtual monopoly in the market. The many fold rise of the prices of REE elements over the last few years and frequent disruptions in supply has forced various nations to invest in indigenous extraction of REEs by increasing production from previously productive sites and to expand the production from new alternate sources including coal and coal byproducts [9]. Coal and Coal beds have been found to be significantly enriched with certain critical metals and can be a potential source for both Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) and Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) [10]. Moreover, coals with high REE concentrations have been discovered in Pavlovka and Rakovka coal deposits in Russia, Appalachian deposits in USA, Sichuan Basin deposits in China and others across the globe [10-13]. A recent study from China looked at how different trace elements (including numerous REEs) partition in various size fractions of Antaibao coal from China. The finding indicates that the REEs, phosphorous, and thorium all have their high concentrations in the particle sizes 0.5 to 3 mm, and 6 to 25 mm. REEs are also often present in the form of phosphates such as monazite in coal [13, 14]. The objective of the study is to identify the concentration of REEs in Alaskan coals and to investigate the effect of density and size in the distribution of REEs in coal and coal byproducts."

Energy Developments Ltd. (EDL) has developed power plants at two Australian coal mines that featuring 94 gas-fueled Caterpillar G3516 engine/generator sets. They will convert to electricity 145 kt/a (160,000 stpy) of coal-seam methane gas for sale to a local utility. The $100-million project will cut the sites&apos; methane emissions in half, provide a low-cost energy source and offset mine operating costs. The project began in May 1995. It is located at the Appin and Tower longwall underground mines, 80 km (50 miles) south of Sydney in New South Wales. The installation is one of the first to capture coal-seam gas from mine ventilation air and gas drainage systems. Coal- seam gas contains 40% to 60% methane, which fluctuates constantly. The system is expected to convert 578,000 m3/d (20.4 million cu ft/d) of coal-seam gas to 94 MW. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.5 Mt/a (3.8 million stpy) of CO, equivalent emissions. The Appin and Tower mines each produce 2 Mtla (2.2 million stpy) of clean coking coal. They operate around the clock with about 400 workers per site. The mines are owned by BHP Steel, Collieries Division, which will share the revenues from energy sales. The Appin Power Partnership consists of EDL and Lend Lease Development Corp.
