Knowledge of in situ stress and natural fracture distribution at depth improves our ability to stimulate and produce low permeability reservoirs. The focus of this study is three closely spaced, 2.5 km deep vertical wells in the Piceance Basin of Colorado. The wells were completed through the tight lenticular and blanket gas sands of the Mesaverde Group. In situ stress directions and magnitudes were determined from hydraulic fracture tests and anelastic strain recovery measurements of oriented core. The distribution, orientation, and characteristics of natural fractures in the subsurface were determined from detailed observations of over 1300 m of core, of which 400 m was oriented. Stress measurements clearly show that horizontal stresses are strongly influenced by lithology. In a sandstone/shale sequence at a depth of about 2.0 km in situ stresses in sandstone formations are anisotropic, with the average ratios of the minimum and maximum horizontal stresses to the overburden stress being 0.82 and 0.96, respectively. In sharp contrast bounding shale formations are lithostatic. This stress contrast between sandstones and bounding shale formations could act as a barrier to hydraulic fracture propagation during stimulation and impede vertical fracture growth. Natural calcite-filled fractures are present in over 7 percent of the core, with several horizons having a much higher frequency of fractures. Fractures are found primarily in sandstone. The fractures have a strong preferred orientation of N 1060E[+]110, which is aligned with the maximum horizontal stress and direction of hydraulic fracture propagation. The interaction between a well developed fracture fabric and anisotropic stresses in sandstone formations produces a permeability anisotropy, with the maximum permeability aligned with the fracture fabric and maximum horizontal stress.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. A review of current mine underground environmental performance is also provided

INTRODUCTION During the past decade, disposal of mine and mill waste material has become an increasingly important issue. Problems of structural stability and seepage effects on stability have been well addressed, and significant technological advances have been achieved [(1-4)]. The primary problem currently facing industry in the waste disposal area is environmental protection. The greatest environmental concern is over the amount of seepage or leachate entering the ground or surface water systems. Methods to determine the quantity of water seeping from a tailings pond have also been covered in the literature [(5-23)]. However, much further work is necessary to fully implement these techniques to evaluate tailings pond performance and accurately predict the various influences of disposal management on seepage from mill tailings. This study is an effort to develop those necessary techniques. The partially saturated method of analysis which is discussed here is applicable to most situations involving seepage from waste piles. In a conventional type of tailings pond, a slime layer is ordinarily built up under the ponded area. This material will consolidate slowly from capillary pressures and the weight of material deposited above it. In situations where this consolidation results in a slime layer of lower permeability than the native foundation soil, a partially saturated flow condition will usually exist in the native soil. This will result in a smaller quantity of water entering the ground-water system than would be predicted by saturated flow analysis. The finite-element program used in this study was originally developed by Neuman [(17)] and is called UNSAT2. The program will analyze problems of saturated or unsaturated, steady or nonsteady flow and can be used with a variety of boundary conditions such as constant flux, constant pressure, maximum flux, minimum pressure, and with infiltration, evaporation, and seepage surfaces. The maximum conditions are controlled by exterior factors such as atmospheric conditions; but the actual flow in the porous media is determined by properties of the porous media. Shallow epithermal stockworks hosted by maar eruption craters contain over ninety percent of the bulk mineable gold identified to date in the Circum-Caribbean region. Pueblo Viejo (Dominican Republic) and Santa Rosa (Panama) contain combined gold reserves of over 600 tonnes. Bulk mineable gold deposits are also being discovered in and around veins that were formerly mined underground. Bellavista, El Recio and San Martin (Costa Rica) contain combined announced gold reserves of over 50 tonnes. Representative rock suites collected at 8 bulk mineable gold deposits include 291 samples of veins and vein stockworks, hydrothermal eruption breccias, sinter, variably altered host, unaltered host, nearby intrusive rocks and basement. Analyses completed to date show that Circum-Caribbean epithermal ores are enriched in arsenic, mercury and antimony as well as gold and silver. Exploration efforts in the region naturally focus on districts with past production. However, an order of magnitude more bulk mineable gold has been discovered in shallow epithermal stockworks outside of the old bonanza vein camps. Exploration guides include basal island arc volcanic sequences, hydrothermal and hydrovolcanic (maar) eruption breccias, thinly-bedded carbonaceous maar sediments, and hot spring-related silicification and argillic alteration.

Results of an electrochemical study using carbon paste electrodes of pyrite and pyrrhotite samples suggest that the mineralogical impurities associated with these minerals are the determinant factor on their reactivity under alteration systems. These results were supported by mineralogical and leachate chemistry data from leach cell tests run on these samples. Pyrite reactivity decreases in the presence of associated impurities due to a galvanic effect whereas pyrrhotite reactivity appears to be controlled by the formation of a passivating layer, which overcome impurities effect. Electrochemical responses of sulfide-bearing samples provided valuable information on the prediction of ARD generation.

INTRODUCTION Paradoxically, it has been found that the people who are the most aware of the origin, mineralogy and composition of bauxite are also the people who are the least aware of how bauxite composition affects its treatment by the Bayer process. These people are the exploration and mining geologists normally associated with aluminum producing companies. The purpose of this paper is to give some idea of how the concentration and physical nature of the different minerals found in bauxites affect the operation of the Bayer process used to extract their alumina content. The bauxites we will consider here will be only the tropical bauxites such as occurring in Jamaica, various countries in South America i.e. Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, African bauxites, Malaysia and in Australia. When we speak of the Bayer process, it will be the North American version of the Bayer process using low caustic concentrations and bauxite digestion temperatures varying between 130° to 250°C. TABLE 1 shows the minerals and elements of interest occurring in tropical bauxites. The minerals and elements listed in the table do not by any means represent all of those identified in bauxites. Using mass spectrographic analysis on six bauxites from different geographic locations, we managed to identify between 50-60 different elements. Fortunately, only about 13-14 of these elements possess the necessary chemical properties to be able to accumulate in caustic Bayer solutions. The remainder are either not attacked, or form insoluble reaction products with some main liquor component, i.e., hydroxide, aluminate or carbonate, or reprecipitate with alumina trihydrate during the precipitation stage.

The highest recorded loss of life due to the collapse of mine workings occurred at the Coalbrook North Colliery in South Africa on 21st January, 1960. A total of 437 persons died when bord and pillar workings collapsed over an area exceeding one square mile The whole mass of strata from the 470 ft (143 m) deep seam to the surface being affected. Although the Coalbrook disaster was unique in its scale the problem of pillar failure, particularly in old workings, is by no means uncommon nor confined to recent history. Indeed, the collapse of large pillared areas was a regular feature of mining in the north of England in the early part of the nineteenth century. When a section of underground workings collapses, the air under the descending roof is compressed very rapidly. The pressurised air is dissipated subsequently at a rate governed by the leakage paths available. If the collapsing area is small, such as the case of a local fall of roof, then there will be little danger of an air blast. If, however, an extensive area collapses suddenly then the rapid compression of air will give rise to a pressure shock wave that will be transmitted through the remaining workings as an air blast. If worked out areas are connected to current workings via unstopped airways an air blast caused by pillar failure in the old workings will be extremely hazardous to personne1 and may cause extensive damage to equipment, perhaps even reaching to surface plant. At Coalbrook, the air blast blew out a wall in the surface fan house. Areas that are considered liable to sudden collapse may be isolated from current workings by the construction of stoppings. However, such stoppings must be capable of withstanding the 'hammerblow' effect of peak air pressures developed during the collapse. The work described in this paper was undertaken in order to determine the maximum air pressures that stoppings must withstand during a major pillar failure. The result has been a method of establishing peak air pressures that is quick and simple to use. Readers who are concerned primarily with the practical application of the method are advised to turn directly to the last main section of the paper.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from a high-extraction retreat room-and-pillar operation in southern Illinois. The objective of this monitoring program is to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a structure during a subsidence event. Data from such a study should enhance the understanding of the mechanisms that produce structural damage and aid in the design of structures that resist such damage. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tiltmeter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations caused by the mining subsidence sequence is demonstrated. Using data from this tiltmeter, the development of curvature in the foundations as they conformed to the displaced ground surface is shown. This curvature is rep- resented by differences in tilt at various points on the foundations, indicating a change in tilt over a horizontal distance. Also, even though subsidence damage has not been fully analyzed, preliminary observations of the cracks that formed in the foundations are reported. These cracks resulted in the separation of one footing into distinct pieces; therefore, their effect on the tilt readings is cited.

A significant amount of energy exists in the waste generated by the coal and timber industries. In the coal industry, the energy loss is mainly due to the discharge of fine coal to the waste impoundment. Despite the fact that the fine coal has the greatest cleaning potential, dewatering, handling and transportation concerns prevent its use as product in many cases. Likewise, the sawdust generated from wood production has energy value and is used as industrial boiler fuel when the transportation distance is relative short. However, wood waste is often discarded into cumbersome landfills due to uneconomical transportation alternatives. Recent research found that these two waste materials can be combined to provide a high energy fuel of around 13000 btu/lb that can be easily handled and transported to end users.

The evaporative pan complex consists of two adjacent seasonal pans. These pans carry an exceptionally high salt (TDS) load due to over 50 years of effluent discharge via the pipeline from mines. The nutrient, heavy metal, radionuclide load in the water and sediments of the pans are very high affecting groundwater around the pans. The groundwater in the region contains TDS > 40 000 mgl-1 and sulphates > 7000 mgl-1, whereas groundwater in areas assumed to be unpolluted by mining activities have TDS < 500 mgl-1 and sulphates < 200 mgl-1. The extent of continuity between the pans and the groundwater is unknown, although there appears to be seepage of contaminated groundwater into the river system.

In the period 1982-1992, world trade has increased in real terms about 65% (Anon., 1992b). The nominal value of this trade in the early 1990s is approximately $5 trillion. In 1970, mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of world trade. By 1980, despite rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities made up about 18% of the total value of world trade, with crude oil amounting to 16% and other minerals the remaining 2%. By 1987, the major worldwide economic slowdown and falling oil prices meant that minerals constituted only about 10% of the total value of world trade, or about $500 billion in 1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). The importance of minerals in world trade since 1987 has remained at about these levels. Approximately 40% of world mineral commodity production is traded internationally. Some economists predict that minerals and other commodities are likely to continue to decline in relative importance in terms of the value of world economic output, as well as world trade, into the foreseeable future (Thurow, 1992). This projected decline in commodity demand may also be related to much slower global economic growth over the next decade (Alperovitz, 1992). Industrial minerals and rocks constituted roughly 2.5% of total mineral commodity exports in the late 1980s, but their relative importance as a portion of mineral commodity exports nearly doubled in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). Industrial minerals constitute the most rapidly growing share of total mineral commodity exports. In addition, price declines among industrial minerals were uncommon in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). While prices of sulfur and most of the fertilizer minerals have seen some erosion and slow growth in markets in the period 1987-1992, other industrial minerals have increased in both value and share of the export market (USBM, 1992). The place of industrial minerals in world trade becomes even more significant when one looks at shipments of chemical fertilizers and basic chemicals that are counted as manufactured products rather than industrial mineral commodities. The United States is the major world producer of industrial mineral commodities and products made from these nonmetallic minerals and rocks. The former Soviet Union, now The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and China have very significant deposits of industrial minerals. Japan exports significant quantities of cement. The US, CIS, and Morocco export large amounts of phosphate rock. Canada and Germany export substantial amounts of potash. Sulfur from Poland, industrial diamonds from South Africa, Zaire, and Brazil, and fluorspar from Mexico are all important exports.

One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The Indications of Rock Mass Pressure Individual Dog Heading Individual dog headings are set wide apart from each other in the unmined ore deposit area where there is no interaction of headings. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. INTRODUCTION The measurement of the total activity of radon daughters in the air of mines has become a routine procedure in order to control the radiation exposure in miners due to the inhalation of these radionuclides. Normally the measured concentration is given in terms of total potential L-energy of the short lived radon daughters. The unit most frequently used is 1 WL (working level), which is defined as the potential a-energy of 1.3.105 MeV per 1 of air. The a-dose to the respiratory tract is, however, not proportional to the inhaled potential a-energy. In addition, the degree of equilibrium between the daughter products in air and the fraction of daughter products not attached to aerosol particles (the unattached fraction) must be known. Theoretical calculations of the equilibrium between daughters and the unattached fraction have been presented by different authors (Jacobi, 1972; Porstendörfer et al, 1978). Such calculations must take into account the plateout of daughters on surfaces, the attachment of daughters to aerosols and removal of daughters by the ventilation. The situation in mines will however be very complex and no single model will cover all situations. In most cases the radon and radon daughter concentrations will be described by a combination of different models. Domanski (1979) used the experimental results of Breslin et al. (1969) from uranium mines to relate the equilibrium between the individual daughters to the equilibrium factor, F. Once the equilibrium factor is known, this seems to be a useful approach to assess the individual daughter concentrations. The concentrations of radon and daughter products may vary considerably during the day. Seasonal variations are also frequently found. It is therefore important to have knowledge of the magnitude of these variations and of the factors having the strongest influence upon the concentrations. The unattached fraction of radon daughters in uranium mines was investigated by George and Hinchliffe (1972) and Raghavayya and Jones (1974). Mercer (1975) later modified the results of Raghavayya and Jones. Both these investigations indicated that the aerosol particle concentrations was the main influencing factor upon the unattached fraction. In this paper we will summarize the main results of a study on the radiological characterics of nonuranium mines. We will also discuss the correlations between the unattached fraction of the potential a-energy and the unattached fraction of the individual daughters, and between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual daughter ratios. More detailed discussions of this study will be published elsewhere (Stranden and Berteig, 1981 and Stranden and Berteig 1981 a). MATERIAL AND METHODS During 4 two-weeks periods corresponding to the seasons in the Norwegian mine where the highest radon daughter concentrations occure, the parameters listed in table 1 were studied. RESULTS Correlation between equilibrium factor and individual daughter ratios. The mean value of the equilibrium factor in all Norwegian mines measured during the last ten years was 0.46 with a minimum of 0.08 and maximum of 0.93 (Stranden and Berteig, 1981). The correlations between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual radon daughter/radon ratios were studied and the results indicated high correlations. In table 2, these correlation formulae are listed together with the correlation coefficients. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

"One critical factor in mineral reserves reporting, as well as mine-reserves reconciliation, is the impact of dilution and ore loss in the mining process. This paper considers the implications of various factors on dilution and ore loss projections, by orebody geometry, mining method, and ore control systems. We also discuss the implications of resource estimation methodology on dilution for reserves. DEFINITIONS Dilution and ore loss are two critical concepts in mining, which address the differences encountered between modeled grade and tonnages and actual production. Dilution is volume increase and grade reduction caused by multiple factors, chief among which are mining of waste material along ore-waste contacts, mining of internal waste as ore, and misclassification of waste as ore in the ore control process. There are also geostatistical and estimation aspects sometimes lumped with dilution, including the volume-variance effect (the tendency for small volumes of material to include a less regular distribution of grade than large volumes of material). "INTRODUCTIONEdilmac dei F.lli Maccabelli (hereinafter referred to as Edilmac) has recently developed a special civil engineering application using the Raise Boring technology with the assistance of Inrock MGS (Magnetic Guidance System). Applying the Paratrack Magnetic Guidance System coupled with a directional mud motor to the drill string allows a better accuracy compared to standard drilling, as showed in our tests. This is the first time the Paratrack System has been applied to the Raise Boring technology. RAISE BORING METHOD STATEMENT The Raise Boring technology was born in North America during the Sixties. In 1962, Ingersoll and Robbins were the first companies to produce Raise Boring Machines (RBM). The technology was first used in the underground mine industry, in order to bore ventilation shafts and passes through different levels, thus reducing the cost of haulage. The Raise Boring method is only feasible in stable rock conditions. The Raise Boring method consists of drilling a small diameter pilot hole that reaches a tunnel located at the bottom of the drilled hole. Once the pilot hole reaches the tunnel, a reamer head is installed at the end of the drill string and pulled up, creating the hole with the designed diameter (Figures 1 and 2). The main equipment, which is required to perform Raise Boring activities, is the following: •,An RBM; •,A tricone bit; •,Drilling rods; •,A reaming head; The standard mucking of the pilot hole is done with water or bentonite mud. For the last 30 years, Edilmac has developed a mucking process, which uses compressed air with the addition of foam or a small amount of water for dust control.Pilot hole tricone. The drilling of the pilot hole is usually performed with a tricone bit having a diameter between 11” (27.61 cm) and 15” (38.10 cm) (Figure 3). High strength rods. The 1.8 million tonne Itos tailings deposit is the result of sever­al years of processing by Comibol of the San Jose and ltos Mine ores at Oruro Bolivia. The historic flowsheet consisted of a flotation circuit in which silver-bearing galena and stibnite were concentrated. Approximately half the silver in the ore was not recovered, and the existing tailings contain slightly over 200 grams silver per tonne, in the form of complex sulfides of silver, antimony, lead, and other metals coating grains of pyrite. An extensive laboratory program was conducted to exam­ine conventional processing l)lethods such as cyanide leaching and regrinding followed by flotation. However, the silver-bear­ing sulfides are in intimate contact with the pyrite and the pyrite comprises 30% of the total tailings weight. Cyanide leaching recovers only 40% of the silver and the cyanide consumption is uneconomically high. Flotation produces an upgraded, but still uneconomic, concentrate. For this reason, chloride leaching had been evaluated by Comibol, and in the mid 1980's Comibol undertook an innova­tive test consisting of two 300 tonne field heap leaches using a cold chloride solution. The tests were partially successful, but could not be applied to the bulk of the tailings which are already ground to 50% minus 200 mesh. In 1992, Kappes, Cassiday & Associates undertook to develop a hot agitated chloride leach flowsheet, and is current­ly constructing a treatment plant under a turnkey contract from a Bolivian company, Baremsa, S.A. Using this process, 85% of the remaining silver can be recovered, with significant by-prod­uct credits from antimony and lead. The project features hot, agitated acidic chloride leaching, filtration, crystallization of lead chloride, and precipitation of metals using iron scrap. Arsenic is removed from the precipitate by caustic leaching, and minor metals by furnace refining. Antimony is recovered as the oxide by cupelation, and silver is poured as <lore from the cupel. Production rate will be 600 tonnes per day. Startup is scheduled for late 1995.

Water-bentonite suspensions exhibit a yield stress which is defined as the minimum applied stress for flow. Considerable debate exists about the yield stress being a material property, hence different measuring methods should give similar answers, but several investigators have demonstrated that it is an engineering reality. Yield stress is normally estimated indirectly from the rheogram obtained with a viscometer following an extrapolation to zero shear rate (the dynamic yield stress), but the technique may be prone to errors because of slip flow. Direct measurements, not prone to such errors, rely on an independent assessment of the yield stress, normally carried out with the vane method (the static yield stress). In this paper results are presented and compared regarding the yield stress of 14 different water-bentonite suspensions measured using both the direct and the indirect methods. In order to obtain a wide range of yield stress values, two different types and two concentrations of bentonite at various pH were tested. Rheological data were obtained using a rotational speed viscometer and a yield stress vane measuring device. Measured vane yield stress values ranged from 5 Pa to 83 Pa. Rheological data collected with the rotating viscometer were fitted using various conventional techniques (interpolation, linear and non-linear regression analysis) as well as using a golden section yield stress search methodology based on Herschel-Bulkley model, developed in house. The vane instrument measures directly the yield stress of the suspensions and requires no further data handling. A comparison of the measured values of the yield stress with the direct and the indirect method is then made for the water-bentonite samples. Not very large differences are observed among different techniques and the variations are discussed. Similar data from literature are also analyzed and the comparison shows that differences on the various estimation methods are much larger than the differences observed in this study.

Modern coal processing plants utilize multiple cleaning circuits to efficiently beneficiate different size coal fractions of run-of-mine coal. An older plant optimization approach is to maintain average product quality from individual cleaning circuits at the same level as the given product specifications for the overall plant. However, many past studies indicate that the equalization of product quality approach fails to produce the maximum plant-yield. A newer approach, known as equalization of incremental product quality, requires that the incremental product quality obtained from each circuit be maintained at the same level to satisfy the overall plant product quality. This approach ensures the maximization of plant yield while satisfying a single product quality constraint. However, while dealing with multiple product quality constraints, this approach by itself may not be sufficient to obtain the desired maximum yield. For the simple reason that the dirtiest particle (or group of particles) with respect to one quality constraint may not be the same particle (or group of particles) with respect to another quality constraint, the mass yield versus product quality relationship generated by equalizing different incremental product quality may not be exactly the same. Therefore, an additional search technique has to be utilized to determine the global-maximum value of plant yield. Thus, the main objective of this study was to utilize an emerging optimization technique, known as genetic algorithms (GA) to maximize plant yield while satisfying multiple product quality constraints. The maximum plant yield obtained from this approach was nearly same as the maximum yield obtained by the incremental product quality approach while satisfying one specific product quality constraint. The GA was applied on a coal preparation plant that utilizes four circuit operations - heavy medium bath, heavy medium cyclone, spiral and froth flotation. The results showed that using GA as an optimization process gives 2.56% higher yield that will result in additional revenue generation of $5,120,000 per annum than average product quality approach.

Introduction The gold rush to the Canadian Klondike and then to the Alaskan gold camps is legend to Americans. The early years of the century also saw flourishing hard rock mining at the famous Treadwell and Alaska Juneau gold mines and the bonanza Kennecott copper mine. Over the last two decades, rich discoveries of copper, cobalt, zinc, lead, molybdenum, tin, and silver have furthered Alaska&apos;s reputation as a storehouse of US minerals. Alaska may also contain large commercial deposits of chromite, platinum, and nickel. Yet in 1984, with the exception of the Usibelli coal mine and several hundred small placer gold mines, Alaska&apos;s mineral potential remains largely undeveloped. Uncertain 70s The 1970s were years of uncertainty for the mining industry in Alaska. The discovery in 1968 of a huge reservoir of oil and natural gas in Prudhoe Bay brought the land claims of Alaska&apos;s natives to national attention and focused interest in Alaska&apos;s resource wealth. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANSCA) created the regional native corporations and granted them selection rights to some 178 000 km2 (44 million acres) of Alaska&apos;s 1.5 Gin&apos; (375 million acres) - about 12% of the state&apos;s land area. The native land selection process would take years. During this time, the status of much of Alaska&apos;s land was in question. Additionally, section d(2) of ANSCA provided for the conversion of an undetermined amount of federal lands into conservation units. These consist of parks, scenic rivers, national monuments, and wildlife refuges. The debate over the d(2) lands was long and acrimonious. National conservation groups lobbied to include as much acreage as possible within restrictive classifications, regardless of its mineral or energy potential. The process was polarized into a preservation-versus-development struggle. To many Alaskans, what was at stake was the ability to develop a viable independent economy, rather than an ongoing role as economic wards of the federal government.
