Certain health and safety hazards occur entirely unexpectedly in some subterranean excavations. Although ground support is not the subject of this paper, ground failure can result in large and often uncontrolled flow of fluids into an excavation. Even when there is no ground failure, the disturbance of nature's equilibrium between rock or unconsolidated alluvium or rubble and the contained fluids poses severe problems to a well planned operation. Optimum conditions for safe operation cannot be the sole criterion for site selection. Some mineral deposits form in zones of structural weakness, others form where hydrothermal alteration substantially weakens the enclosing rock, and tabular deposits such as coal and evaporites inevitably undermine large areas. Excavation to acquire mineral values cannot be relocated. The same is often true for tunnels driven to connect distant points by the most direct route. Rivers and mountains cannot he avoided, and the cost of lengthening a tunnel--by even a fraction of a percent--must be strongly justified. No responsible engineer will knowingly select a dangerous route for excavation, but to what extent do engineers attempt to assess the health and safety hazards that may be reasonably expected? How, specifically, can methane explosions, water and sand flooding, dangerous dusts, toxic gases, thermal shock and radar poisoning be eliminated or minimized through systematic advance planning?

There are two steps in evaluating potential mine waste impacts on ground and surface waters. Characterize the mine waste (characterization methodologies) and assess potential impacts (assessment strategies). One or both may be required for mine permitting, operation and closure. The first step is to characterize the waste. Determine if it has the potential to release chemical constituents or acid rock drainage to the environment. If no potential exists for release to the environment, the evaluation process is complete. A monitoring plan is then established. If the potential exists for release of chemical constituents or acid rock drainage to the environment, a strategy to evaluate potential impacts must be implemented. Strategies discussed here to evaluate potential impacts were developed during investigations at precious metal and base metal mines in Nevada. Water resources in Nevada consist mostly of ground water. So the strategies discussed focus on potential impacts to ground water. However, several of these strategies also apply to assessing potential impacts to surface water. Implementing these strategies has helped determine the potential for impact and has been successful in permitting mine expansion as well as allowing continued operation and obtaining mine closure at several mine sites in Nevada. These strategies were carried out in accordance with Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) regulations and through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

Underground mine service water in South Africa is used for dust suppression and cooling the environment as well as the pneumatic rock drills. Although the chilled water is not intended for potable use, it is often used as drinking water by mining personnel. Furthermore, droplets sprayed are liable to be inhaled. The water is recirculated on a continuous basis and is a potential source of infection by intestinal microorganisms or water-borne diseases such as cholera or typhoid. In order to protect the health of the underground workforce it is customary to disinfect the chilled service water, The bacteriological quality of the water is monitored by enumerating total aerobic bacteria (TAB), total coliforms (C C) and Escherichia coli (E Coli). E coli is an indicator of human faeca_l __ - -- contamination, The bacteriological standard specified by the Anglo American Corporation for mine service water is less than 3000 TA B per 100ml, less than 2 CC per ml and the total absence of E Coli. There are several disinfecting agents available for use. Among these are UV irradiation, ozone, chlorine dioxide and compounds that produce hypobromous and hypochlorous acids. Historically, the methods of treatment have been chlorine based and include the use of gaseous chlorine (surface installations only), calcium hypochlorite granules or tablets, chlorinated cyanurate tablets, sodium hypochlorite solutions and hypochlorite produced by electrolysis.

In a small tank, slurry is passed through the high shear impeller zone with small time intervals, and a large proportion is regularly exposed to air at the surface, and at relatively high shear rates. This accounts for significant differences in the performance of large and small tanks. It is preferable to derive data where possible directly from an operating plant rather than applying data generated in small tanks where allowances must be estimated for the above differences [and where slurry aging and often substantial cooling compared to hot freshly milled ore further distorts results]. Various measurements have shown that many gold slurries can suffer extreme variability, as streamers of bypassing material or boules of hold-up periodically condstitute the instantaneous discharge from a tank - the relatively high Yield stress of slurries [around 1 to 10 Pa] causes very incomplete homogenization of slurry in any tank, the worse the larger the tank and the more viscous the slurry. To provide a background for this subject, this monograph presents leach and adsorption models based on the fundamental physics and chemistry of these processes, and includes quantitative discussions of factors which can lead to deviations on scale-up. The Throughflow model which avoids the need for such alowances is then presented, as well as a Computer Programme applying this model, and which allows direct calculation of the effects of:

The need for wartime supplies of uranium for the Manhattan Project prompted a 1944 study of uranium in South Africa. Uraninite had been reported by R.A. Cooper in 1923 in a Witwatersrand heavy- mineral concentrate, and the search for uranium, therefore, included the district's 30 operating mills. The method of investigation was simple: take bulk concentrate samples from the Wifley tables and determine their mineralogy. Samples were taken on a daily basis, although weekly composites also were taken of some mills. In 1944, most mills had simple gravity circuits and produced (I) a gravity concentrate, and (2) an all-slime [-75 pm (-200 mesh)] product. The tonnage throughput was known, and from that, head assays could be calculated. Concentrate samples were sent to the United States for chemical analyses. A Geiger counter set up in a Johannesburg hotel room provided preliminary data. The early data showed uraninite to be widespread. Microscopic, mineragraphic, and siezing tests were all under- taken in Johannesburg. Ultimately, tests led to a high grade (+90%) uraninite concentrate. Platinum and other heavies were the impurities. In seven months, the investigations had reached the stage where it was possible to forecast an annual production of 5.4 to 7.3 kt (6,000 to 8,000 st) of U3O8. The estimate is still realistic. The present study refers to passive systems for the treatment of acidic liquid effluents emanating from mixed-sulphide mines by means of an-aerobic compost wetlands. An effort was made for the thermodynamic study of the chemical systems that are involved in the reactions during the simulation of this specific system using laboratory columns and a pilot scale application. The substrate used was a mixture of cow manure, a high alkalinity organic substrate and chestnut woodchips, while the synthetic solutions prepared for the laboratory experiments contained the three basic metal contaminants i.e. Fe, Zn and Mn. The precipitation mechanism of the contained metals and the form in which these are precipitated was therefore investigated by constructing the equilibrium phase diagrams (Eh-pH diagrams) of the Me-S-C-H2O systems. Based on the experimental results from laboratory and pilot scale tests the stability conditions of the chemical species taking part in the aqueous solutions were also determined and verified with the thermodynamic data available. The thermodynamic analysis of the system was performed for ambient temperature, which is the prevailing temperature on field constructed compost wetlands. Results were further validated with the results obtained by the application of a five step sequential extraction procedure in the remaining substrate in order to determine the form in which the metals were precipitated.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has undertaken a $1.2 billion effort to capture and treat combined sewage overflows from various outfalls along the Detroit and Rouge Rivers in Detroit, Michigan. This program is planned to include a 455,000 m3 (120 million gallon) storage and treatment tunnel which will capture overflows from 19 outfalls along the Rouge River. The tunnel is currently in the conceptual design phase, with the bid date planned for mid-year in 2001,and completion planned for August 2005. The total design and construction cost is currently estimated to be approximately $450 million. Current concepts are for the storage and transport tunnel will be 6.1 m (20feet) in finished diameter, with a total alignment length of approximately 12,200 m(40,000 feet). The main tunnel will extend through the Traverse and Antrim Shalerock formations, while approximately 5,500 m (18,000 feet) of various diameter connecting tunnel will extend through both rock and soft ground. The project will include a total of 10 drop shafts, 13 riser shafts, various connecting structures, and a 455,000 m3/day (20 mgd) pumping station. This paper will present a discussion of the design philosophy, subsurface conditions, the various planned components, and the expected design and construction considerations for the proposed Upper Rouge Combined Sewage Overflow Tunnel.

The advantages offered by mechanical mining have been demonstrated in the underground mining of coal, evaporites and other soft minerals. Mechanical mining and the advancements in automation technoloogies have been the principal drivers towards the realization of enhanced productivity in soft rock mining. For past two decades, emphasis has been placed on developing mechanical mining technology for hard rock applications, to achieve similar productivity improvements and cost reductions. The benefits of mechanical mining are numerous, particularly in an industry where market conditions continue to dictate higher production and lower costs while maintaining high safety standards. Other benefits of mechanical mining include reduced ground support and labor requirements and the elimination of blast and diesel fumes. These benefits further make this technology an attractive alternative to drill and blast for hard rock mining. Mechanical mining is conducive to full implementation of remote control and automation technologies that are under development to achieve further productivity and safety improvements in underground mining. Mine development has been the main focus area for mechanical miners by manufacturers and mining companies. Potential applications include ore body access, haulage and ventilation drifts, undercut and exploration drifts. The economic use of this technology in mine production is still considered many years away. It would need a major technological breakthrough that would make mechanical rock fragmentation competitive with the large-scale, low-cost production blasting operations.

The mining industry finds itself in the middle, between the need to increase production of our energy resources and the necessity of minimizing the environmental impact. Using the recent past as a guide, the mine planning engineer's function will continue to increase as further coal quality constraints are made upon the production staff. The engineer will need to make use of all available tools in order to provide timely answers to the complex "what if" questions that arise. This need to consider many alternatives is bringing about a rapidly increasing acceptance and utilization of the computer. In the areas of data handling, mineralization modeling, and production simulation, the computer is an effective tool for the mine planning engineer. Described herein is a coal data storage and analysis system developed to provide timely answers to the "what if" questions for an operating strip coal mine in Montana. The characteristics of a computerized coal data base and coal quality planning system are outlined in this chapter. The system has been developed for use at a particular coal mine; however, it has applicability to coal mines in general. Fig. 1 is a flow chart showing the functional relationships of the system. There are three main file types: the drill-hole data base, the boundary file, and the zone file. The purposes for which each file is organized are illustrated on the flow chart.

For the past quarter of century, much more effort and research have been expended in developing the "optimum" ultimate pit limit design algorithms and much less to solving the "optimum" open pit production sequencing. However, the potential economic benefit to an operating mine is far greater for the latter than the former. Unfortunately, the problem of "optimum" open-pit production sequencing has not been fully solved to date. This paper first reviews the past and currently used methodologies for developing this sequence. The staggered pit phase geometry problem of advanced stripping and operational constraints such as ore and waste tonnage requirements by period and necessary contiguity of mining faces are the main reasons why the "optimum" production sequencing problem has not been solved as yet. This paper also explains why any method which attempts to simplify the problem using ultimate pit limit design algorithm will fail to reach an "optimum" solution.

This paper presents a review of the grouting works of Line 2 of the Greater Cairo MetroSystem. The Nile River alluvial deposits underlying this ancient city provided for a challenging and sometimes difficult grouting project. Permeation grouting using state-of-the-art computerized grouting techniques, as well as extensive ground treatment by jet grout, was per-formed for soil consolidation and/or groundwater control. During the project, over 425,000m3 of ground was treated, requiring 1.4 million linear meters of drilling and PVC injection pipe, 54,000 m3 of bentonite cement and 230,000 m3 of chemical and mineral grout. In addition, over 70,000 m3 of ground was treated using the jet grout method. Relative to major international transportation projects, the grouting works for Line 2 of the Cairo Metro represent one of the largest worldwide grouting endeavors to date.

For the African continent promoting a sustainable utilization of its mineral resources could be considered as a key determinant to fight against poverty. Sustainable development performance indicators for measuring the economic, environmental and social impacts of mining activity are necessary for drawing up policies and sectoral actions, identifying and controlling risks, identifying and implementing sustainable development actions, negotiating between stake-holders, improving mine production, etc. To respond to this need, the SIGAfrique Network proposed to develop a joint decision support tool entitled the African Mining Observatory (AMO) and, to this end, develops a system of indicators to be integrated within the SIGAfrique database. The development of both the OMA and the indicators is based on a participatory method within the working groups, which comprise experts/participants from the 13 SIGAfrique partner and observer countries (Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Tanzania, Niger, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Angola, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Mauritania).

Injecting pressurized water into a coalbed prior to mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Because of economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is now limited to the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes that are drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob-gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72 longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob-gas boreholes. Computer coalbed-reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water-infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed.

Data from many case histories reporting tunnel boring machine penetration rates in rock with unconfined compressive strengths greater than 70 MPa (10,000psi) are summarized. The case history data are useful for comparing estimated penetration rates with historic performance in similar rock types, particularly in granitic and metamorphic rocks. TBM exhibit higher penetration rates in sedimentary rocks than in granitic and metamorphic rocks. Data for the two groups of rocks are summarized separately.

The ability to accurately predict the sound field is essential for the estimation of probable worker noise exposure. For this reason, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is researching computer- based analytical techniques specifically geared to calculate the spatial variation of sound pressure levels within common mining environments. Initial modelling efforts describing the user interface, the simulation of energy acoustics, and the graphical representation of sound pressure levels are presented in this paper.

This paper describes improvements in SAG and AG mill liner designs and their cumulative effect on wear life and mill availability. Routine procedures used by many SAG and AG mill operators to improve liner life are reviewed. Guidelines are provided for estimating the time required to replace worn liners along with practical methods to reduce downtime for liner replacement. Finally, the effects of mill operating conditions on liner wear life and breakage are considered.

INTRODUCTION Concentration of radon 222Rn and its decay products occuring in the Polish mines of metal-ores call for the necessity of systematic radiation control /Do8la/ both of the working environment and of the miners' personal exposure. The attempts at introducing a system of radiological protection in mines, similar to the ones existing in X-ray or isotope laboratories, took several years and consisted of development of the methods for control of concentration of radon and its progeny in the air, as well as the methods for measuring individual exposure. It was accepted that the assessment of both transient concentration in the air and of personal exposure are basic elements of the control system, which should be implemented independently of each other. Concentration measurement serves to detect and to determine those areas in mines where there is intensive radon emanation, and where current control of the effectiveness of technology introduced to deacrease the concentrations is necessary; personal dosimetry results in the assessment of the actual exposure of miners to radiation. PRINCIPLES OF THE SYSTEM The assessment of working environment is based on concentration measurements of the potential radiation energy of radon alpha decay products. Decentralized assessment is carried out by the special dosimetric service operating in each mine. Dosimetrists are equipped with portable radiometers, type RGR-11, made by the institute of Nuclear Research, Warsaw. The radiometer is presented in Fig. 1. Measurement of filter activity is performed automatically according to Markov's method /Ma62/ or any other method. Simultaneously to potential energy measurement the dosimetrists are measuring the dust concentration in the air and ventilation rate. Ventilation service looks for correlation between those indices and the concentration of radon daughters in the air. Derived Air Concentration /DAC/ for concentration assessment was accepted to be 6.25 10-6 Jm-3 /0.3 WL/ according to ICRP recommendation /Publication No. 24/ /ICRP77/. If environmental measurements reveal potential energy concentration exceeding the value of 0.3 DAC at working places, the miners employed there are subject to individual control of personal exposure. Individual exposure measurement is carried out centrally by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in [Lodz] for all metal-ore mines. INTRODUCTION Interest in the recovery of methane from coalbeds has increased rapidly over recent years, because of its potential as an energy resource and to alleviate pollution and safety problems. The resource base of coalbed methane in the United States has been estimated at 11.2 Gm3, roughly equivalent to 20 years consumption (Mroz et al., 1983; Kuuskraa and Brandenburg, 1989). Methane contributes to the adverse environmental impacts of global warming, tropospheric ozone formation (smog), and potentially stratospheric ozone destruction. Association of methane with coal has always presented a safety problem in mines due to the potential for explosions. The rate of release of methane depends on the amount adsorbed by the coal, the adsorption isotherm for the coal, and the size of the coal particles. Mining operations can affect the particle size distribution and the production of fines and therefore the rate of release. The time the mined coal remains in the mine may also be important in determining total emissions. The methane content of some Utah coals was determined in this study. The methane content of the coals is compared with the chemical and physical properties of the coals and the properties of the seam and neighboring strata. Correlations are developed to better understand the formation and retention of methane by these coal seams. METHANE FORMATION IN COALBEDS Three mechanisms for methane formation may be considered: (1) nonbiogenic formation, (2) formation by anaerobic bacteria during plant material deposition and the early stages of diagenesis, and (3) formation from pyrolysis of coal material during coal maturation. Nonbiogenic formation by thermal processes involving carbon- and hydrogen-containing compounds has been proposed as a mechanism for methane formation in the earth. It is not likely to be of importance where other fossil fuel materials are present. Coal would not survive the temperatures required and hence the methane would need to migrate and be trapped by the coal seam. This mechanism is unlikely for coalbed methane. Formation of methane by anaerobic bacteria undoubtedly occurs during coalification, but the methane may not be trapped until the pore system of the coal is developed, and would likely be displaced by methane formed during further coalification. Methane formed by maturation of the coal material as it progresses from peat to coals of various rank is the most probable mechanism for the formation of coalbed methane. Most of the methane is adsorbed onto the walls of microvoids in coal. It has been estimated that the surface area of one kilogram of coal is between 20,000 m2 to 200,000 m2. Surface area measurements depend on the coal and also on the method of measurement. At 20 atmospheres, in some coals, the adsorbed methane is 10 times greater than methane as a free gas. At 100 atmospheres the adsorbed gas can be as densely packed as a liquid. The volume of methane gas held in coal depends on the volume of gas that exists as a free gas and the adsorbed gas capacity. The volume of free gas in the coal can be calculated from the kinetic theory of gases (methane can be assumed to be an ideal gas because errors would not be greater than 1 % for normal mining pressures). Langmuir (1916) derived an equation for the adsorption of gases on uniform surfaces and this is applied to the adsorption of methane on coal:

The mining industry continues to be under expanded scrutiny in the health and safety arena, both from federal regulators and the media. While this paper will briefly discuss how enforcement activity, both with citations issued and the size of penalties proposed, the primary focus will be practical suggestions to deal with some key, high-risk areas for a mine operator which could have substantial impact, both in terms of liability and mine operations. It goes without saying that all mine operators need to continue compliance programs they have in place with careful ongoing evaluation of those plans for areas of improvement. The focus here will not be compliance as such, but rather steps to take and procedures to have in place to try to minimize risks in the face of the potential for more significant liability. Thus, our focus will be procedures to respond to unwarrantable failure citations, immediately reportable accidents, and to deal with potential pattern of violation issues.1

A brief description of the mining method and ventilation system of the San Manuel Mine?s first presented; this is necessary to an understanding of the heat problem and cooling system. The problem of heat at San Manuel is discussed. Charts and graphs showing the relationships between ambient surface air and underground temperature conditions are given. A history of attempts to cool air at San Manuel is presented, starting with the first refrigeration type air coolers which were used in development headings, and followed by the underground water chillers that were used in conjunction with cooling coils. Goals for design of a centralized cooling system with ultimate heat rejection through surface cooling towers are presented. The problems found with using the centralized system in main cooling coils are discussed. Plans for modification of the centralized system as utilized is the summer of 1987 are given, along with results obtained and problems with the system. Plans for subsequent modifications are presented.
