Liquid carbon dioxide can be used as a replacement for organic solvents in the extraction of anionic platinum group metal complexes from an aqueous phase. However, because conventional extractant-metal complexes are not soluble in liquid carbon dioxide, this can be achieved only if highly carbon dioxide-soluble extractants are developed. For example, trioctylamine-gold chloride is not soluble in liquid carbon dioxide, although trioctylamine is CO2 soluble. The novel CO2-soluble extractants presented in this paper have a CO2-philic fluorinated tail to enhance solubility and a conventional amine head group for extraction of metals. Both the extractant and the extractant-metal complex are soluble at ambient temperature at pressures from 7 to 35 MPa. Efficiency factors as high as 2.23 have been measured using 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (TCTFE), a low pressure screening liquid for carbon dioxide, indicating that these compounds will strongly bind the metal chloride. For example, 84% of Pt-chloride was extracted into TCTFE using a 3.5:1 ratio of a double¬tailed fluoroalkyl amine extractant: metal chloride. An 88% recovery of Pt-chloride into high-pressure liquid carbon dioxide was achieved using the same extractant at a 3.5:1 ratio. Therefore, it appears possible to replace organic solvents with liquid carbon dioxide during the extraction of platinum chlorides if highly carbon dioxide-soluble extractants agents are employed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve coal conservation and utilization is currently investigating longwall panel layouts to maximize coal recovery and minimize interactive problems in multiple-seam operations. When longwalling coalbeds in descending order, the transfer of stress from overlying gate roads is a major design constraint affecting pillar stability in the lower mine. The lower mine gate road pillars must be properly designed to withstand the additional load transfer if gate roads are superpositioned in successive seams. The Bureau's MULSIM/NL model was used to analyze load transfer mechanics for superpositioned gate road pillars. Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), which is an empirically based design method for longwall gate road pillars, was used to calibrate model input parameters. The attributes of both the MULSIM/NL model and ALPS were combined to develop a modified method for estimating pillar stress for multiple-seam cases. The modified method uses a multiple-seam (MS) factor to estimate the stress on the lower mine gate road pillars when superpositioning is practiced. Numerical analysis shows that the MS factor is dependent upon the interburden thickness and pillar width and is presented in a series of graphs relating these two parameters. Several examples are included to illustrate the use of the MS factor for estimating lower mine pillar stress and resulting stability factors.

In 1989 Newmont Gold company initiated a project to develop a treatment process for higher grade refractory gold ores to be mined from deposits along the Carlin Trend in Nevada. Extensive laboratory and pilot testing have identified a unique whole ore roasting process for oxidizing these ores prior to gold recovery by conventional cyanidation techniques. Subsequent detailed engineering studies by Fluor Daniel evaluated three different dry grinding flowsheets for feed preparation to this roasting circuit. The selected flowsheet will incorporate a two compartment ball mill with an attached drying chamber that is driven by a 11.2 MW (15,000 hp) wrap-around motor.

Metal ions associated with effluent streams pose an increasing environmental problem for the mineral industry. Various techniques currently in use to combat this problem including bioremediation, chemical precipitation, and ion exchange are reviewed, and their relative advantages and disadvantages discussed. An alternative technique for metal ion removal, adsorption on surface modified alumina substrates is presented. Alumina surfaces were modified by adsorption of organofunctional silanes, and metal ion removal occurs by chelation of the ion by the adsorbed silane molecules. Experimental data is presented for the removal of cupric ions by this method and is compared to cupric ion removal by adsorption on alumina without prior surface modification.

Experimentation was per formed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved with a 75% P2O5 recovery.

It has been well accepted for many decades that hard starting of conveyors has associated problems. It is particularity damaging to the belt and splices. Recent measurements of hard starts on a long conveyor with a low modulus belt showed very unusual responses. These included violent accelerations and repeated "whip cracking" of the belt. Laboratory investigations of the very high strain rates experienced by the belt during the whip cracking, show mechanisms for belt damage that are not associated with normal usage. This paper outlines the measurement to show that for long, low modulus conveyors, constant torque controls are inappropriate and time ramp controls are really essential.

Ground water inflow into a mine and the re¬sultant impact on district hydrology can be pre¬dicted on a site specific basis once the ground water flow systems at the site are sufficiently well under¬stood so that a valid conceptual model can be de¬veloped. Ground water flow systems are controlled by the hydrogeologic properties of the materials at the, site, including hydraulic continuity along flow paths, and boundary conditions. Preliminary delin¬eation of hydrostratigraphic units for conceptual models frequently can be based on surface water data; specifically, spring locations and the gain-loss reaches of streams. Quantitative predictions of mine water inflow and its impact on regional hydrology require col¬lection and analysis of numerous types of data. Hydraulic conductivity must be defined quantita¬tively both parallel and perpendicular to bedding as well as areally for each hydrostratigraphic unit. The characteristics of the Davis shale in case his¬tory number 2 illustrate this concept very well. The storage characteristics also must be determined for each hydrostratigraphic unit and the potential or hydrostatic head should be quantified vertically and areally for each unit. The potentiometric measure¬ments in the Bonneterre Formation as discussed in case history number 2 illustrate this point. The data collection and data analysis techniques constitute the weak link in the analysis of mine inflow and district impact. The technology for char¬acterizing a mine site in the field has lagged behind the technology for mathematical simulation; we at¬tribute this development to the fact that computer modeling is relatively inexpensive compared to field data collection and analysis. On-site tests provide the best means of quan¬tifying hydraulic conductivity parallel to bedding and the storage characteristics of the unit. Pump tests with multiple observation wells provide the best information from on site tests. Hydrogeologie boundaries can be located from such multiple well tests. Multiport piezometers provide a means for determining the vertical potential in a single borehole. Borehole geophysics can facilitate the def¬inition of hydrostratigraphic units. Vertical hy¬draulic conductivity is difficult but not impossible to quantify with existing field test methods; labo¬ratory tests of cores fail to give a value represent¬ative of the field situation. The storage characteristics of a confined (artesian) hydro¬stratigraphic unit can be difficult to quantify when pumping changes the confined unit to an uncon¬fined (water table) case after depressurization and dewatering. Transmissivity and storage coefficient can be approximated to some extent for given field con¬ditions by computer modeling if enough is known about hydrogeologic boundaries. Modeling can be used in a trial-and-error approach to match transmissivity and storage coefficients to existing water level data corresponding to estimated discharge rates. A solution can also be obtained using a tech¬nique referred to as the inverse method. Unfortu¬nately, such a solution is seldom unique. Fracture flow models exist but practicality usu¬ally necessitates reversion to a basic Darcy flow model. Data requirements for fracture flow models could be difficult to fulfill where fracture aperture, spacing, orientation, and length are required. Ob¬taining such data at depth prior to mining would be impossible for any mine simulation in fractured media. We are of the opinion that most fractured media simulations can be accomplished using con¬ventional Darcy flow models by viewing the field problem on a macroscopic scale. The real challenge is to delineate hydrostratigraphic units properly in the field. The question of whether a broken-up fault zone is an aquifer or a barrier boundary is seldom simple. The fractures usually can be treated as an equivalent porous medium in either case. Only a few techniques exist for predicting un¬derground mine water inflow. These techniques fre¬quently are designed to evaluate shaft or tunnel inflow under steady-state head conditions in a sin¬gle layer rather than in multiple hydrostratigraphic units. This paper addresses the question ?What constitutes the right level of investment in community goodwill?? Mining companies are still grappling with this subject even though the business case for community investment has been accepted at a general level, as a strategy for competitive differentiation, risk mitigation and a desire to deliver - and to be seen to deliver - a ?net benefit? to affected communities. Gaining senior management commitment to long term social projects, by definition characterized by uncertainty and complexity, is made easier if projects are shown to benefit the site?s strategic goals. Case study research amongst mining companies, including interviews with social investment decision-makers, has assisted in developing a SI-DAT (Social Investment Decision Analysis Tool), a decision model for evaluating social projects in order to create value for both the company and community. Multi-criteria decision analysis techniques integrating business planning processes with social impact assessment have proved useful in assisting mining companies think beyond seeking access to required lands and peaceful relations, to how they can meet their business goals and contribute to regional development.

For our company, S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., restoration of areas which were mined and the effort for bringing up again a balance of nature is an important priority over the last 3 decades. The successful qualitative results of restoration works have delivered to nature over 1.700.000 m2 of surface after mining activity. Our fundamental method in order to achieve the best results for restoration of mined areas is the use of local plants (bush or tree type). Grass and herbs are installed by using the method of hydroseeding. Small trees and bushes are produced and they grow up at our fully owned Milos nursery and they are installed during winter when weather conditions are suitable. During the initial stages of restoration activities a great amount of surfaces, adequately shaped, are delivered by the mining department covered with top soil. These surfaces are suitable not only for the local nature community but also for a combination between natural and agricultural environment. The above fact was a great chance to create small horizontal agricultural cultivations as pilots inside the restored areas. At the beginning the agricultural items that could potentially be installed in these pilot areas were studied and examined analytically. The following agricultural items were finally qualified to be furthermore researched: 1) Vineyard (Vitis vinifera ) 2) Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) 3) Jojoba (Simmonsia chinensis) 4) Olive tree (Olea europea)

Long distance slurry pipeline systems for steam coal, iron concentrates, copper concentrates, and limestone, first used nearly 60 years ago, are now transporting nearly three billion ton-miles annually. At this time a phosphate concentrate pipeline is nearing start-up and systems for transporting coking coal, lead/zinc concentrates, and fly ash are planned. The solids pipeline concept was first patented in the early 1900's and put into practice in the 1950's. Table 1 summarizes the major elements of several presently operating commercial systems. Increased control system sophistication has been accompanied by significant drops in control equipment size and cost, as illustrated by recent cases of pipeline operation with progressively more advanced level of control: 1) The Consolidation Coal (Ohio) and Savage River (Tasmania) iron concentrate pipelines started in 1957 and 1967, respectively, used simple hard-wired control logic. 2) The Black Mesa (Arizona) coal slurry pipeline commissioned in 1971 added a hard- wired programmable logic controller for some of the start-up and shutdown routines. 3) Two years after its start-up in 1974 the Pinto Valley (Arizona) copper concentrate pipeline was tied into the concentrator digital computer system for data logging. 4) The Samarco (Minas Gerais, Brazil) iron concentrate pipeline which came on-line in mid-1977 was the first slurry system to use a dedicated supervisory computer for its control. Communication to remote areas was via micro- wave and buried cable.

Lac Minerals Bullfrog conducted research and testwork to find an environmentally acceptable alternative to lead for fire assaying. The result of this work was the substitution of bismuth for lead in all fire assaying performed at the Bullfrog Mine. The environmental and economic ramifications of this discovery are highlighted.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA -commonly referred to as Superfund) was passed into law in December 1980 in the wake of such incidents as Love Canal and the Valley of the Drums. Superfund was originally perceived as a way of cleaning up spills of hazardous substances and/or cleaning up abandoned hazardous waste dumpsites. In February 1981, Michael Cook, EPA deputy assistant administrator for hazardous emergency response, called Superfund "a tremendously powerful law. It could revolutionize the way the environment is protected, but we certainly don't intend to realize the full potential of the law for some time." These words have proven prophetic for Asarco's East Helena Smelter.

Very few facilities containing hydraulically deposited tailings have been completely reclaimed and capped at this time. Design of a closure cap for a tailings impoundment has relied heavily on consolidation theory in order to achieve a cap that maintains sur­face drainage. Obtaining data for the consolidation evaluation can be difficult and costly. The author reviews the performance of two tailings impoundment closure caps that have been suc­cessfully installed and presents the experience gained from these projects with an emphasis on the ability to optimize cap design through post-operational monitoring prior to initiating cap con­struction. Using the optimization approach, a significant earth­work quantities reduction may be realized for the ultimate cap.

INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.

"Heat and humidity buildup within refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 hours while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95°F (35°C). NIOSH tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in NIOSH underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-hour period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners increased over the 96-hour test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating heat and humidity temperature profiles for RAs not tested in situ. INTRODUCTION RAs are designed to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners who cannot escape after a mine disaster. One of the major considerations for integrating RAs in mine environments is the thermal environment inside the RA and the impact that the surrounding mine conditions have on the temperature and humidity buildup. Previous research has observed that the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the CO2 scrubbing systems will cause the RA interior air temperature to increase. In addition to the increase in temperature, an occupant’s respiration and perspiration, as well as the chemical reaction of the scrubbing chemicals with CO2, will contribute to an increase in humidity within the RA. The resulting internal thermal conditions, if not controlled, can subject miners to conditions that can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death depending on the duration and magnitude of exposure. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures when workplaces are not sufficiently heated, cooled, or insulated to provide comfortable or healthy conditions. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require that RAs must be designed to ensure that the internal AT does not exceed 95°F (35°C) when the RA is fully occupied."

For some time, selenate has eluded water treatment by conven­tional means such as precipitation and clarification. This has been due to the nearly universal solubility of all oxidized sele­nium species, the low levels required for surface discharge, and almost identical chemical behavior to all forms of oxidized sul­fur. The last characteristic makes selenate particularly difficult to deal with in acid mine waters where sulfate can easily be on the order of one gram per liter. Approaches such as ion exchange or reverse osmosis often tum into total demineraliza­tion schemes for the sake of removing a "trace" selenium species that may be present on the order of 108 sulfate/selenate. Reduction of selenate to selenite or elemental selenium by chemical means has been relatively unresearched. Some limit­ed success has been reported (Murphy, 1988) using ferrous hydroxide as a reducing agent; however, the reaction time as reported is too slow to be useful in a practical plant design. One significant difference between selenate and sulfate is that selenate has been discovered to be reducible in acid solution by elemental iron when catalyzed by soluble copper. Since the +4 or zero valence states of selenium are rather easy to deal with by coprecipitation with iron salts or alum, the elemental iron dis­solved in the process contributes to the overall process by pro­viding sludge upon raising the pH that can be separated by con­ventional clarification. Commercial production of selenium using copper catalyzed reduction of selenite to selenium metal via sulfur dioxide is well established, however, at the < 5 ppb requirements for surface discharge this reduction process equili­brates at levels far too high to be useful to low level selenate removal criteria. The reaction reported herein uses elemental iron for reduction of selenate with copper acting either as a cata­lyst or as a coprecipitation agent. This method, employed with conventional sludging, clarification and filtration can provide an economic method to achieve non detectable selenium (< 0.005 mg/I). Iron consumptions for the conditions tested have been on the order of 3 lbs/1,000 gallons treated. This represents as little as $0.06 or $2.00 per 1,000 gallons based on using a scrap source of iron or the purchase of electrolytic iron for the process.
