INTRODUCTION Excess bronchogenic carcinoma has been demonstrated among underground uranium miners in the United States, Czechoslovakia, and Canada (Archer 1981). This excess cancer is attributed largely to radiation from the alpha particles delivered to the tracheobronchial epithelium by the decay of short-lived daughters of radon. Interaction between the radiation and cigarette smoking has been demonstrated in production of the excess cancer (Archer 1973). The distribution of histologic types of bronchogenic cancer among uranium miners was established as different from that in other men in 1964 when an analysis of the first 51 cases among United States uranium miners was published (Saccomanno 1964). It was confirmed five years later by Yugoslavian studies (Horacek 1969). A later analysis, using a relative frequency method, indicated that oat cell and other small cell undifferentiated carcinomas increased markedly with increasing exposure to radiation in uranium mines (Saccomanno 1971). A subsequent analysis used only cases from an epidemiological study so as to enable calculation of expected numbers. It showed that there was an elevation in incidence of epidermoid, adenocarcinomas, and possibly other types, as well as small cell undifferentiated carcinomas (Archer 1974). At that time, it was felt that the histological distribution of cancer among uranium miners was well established. However, one of the authors (GS) has noted that fewer oat cell carcinomas were appearing among uranium miners in recent years. In his material the fraction of oat cell carcinoma, in successive 5 year periods between 1960 and 1980 was 59, 46, 37, and 22 percent. The association with calendar years is almost certainly spurious, reflecting some other factor associated with time. From the standpoint of tumor biology such a change must be important. This is a preliminary report which attempts to determine the cause of that change. POSSIBLE REASONS FOR OBSERVED CHANGE IN CELL TYPES 1) It might reflect a decrease in radiationinduced carcinomas, so that most of the ones being seen now are cigarette-induced. This appears to be a possibility because radiation levels in mines had been markedly reduced in the early 1970s, and because most of the uranium miners now developing carcinoma had quit mining during the 1965-1975 period. 2) It might represent a change in interpretation by the pathologists involved. 3) It might represent a real change in distribution as a result of increased latency, an aging population, cessation of smoking, increasing pack years of cigarettes, or other factors which have changed with time. Each of these possibilities is being checked. Dr. Waxweiler, later in this conference, is presenting an updated mortality analysis of United States underground uranium miners. His data indicate that lung cancer incidence among the Study Group of uranium miners is still quite high, but the ratio of observed to expected is falling somewhat. It is apparent that decreasing exposures in uranium mines is not yet reflected in normal lung cancer mortality rates. Reason #1 is therefore very unlikely. Bucketline dredges are machines for excavating large relatively unconsolidated or weakly consolidated materials from below water level. They are at the upper end of the capital cost range and the lower end of the operating cost range for placer mining machines and have digging capacities, typically, of from 100 cubic yards of bank measure material per operating hour for a shallow digging dredge carrying 2 cubic foot buckets to 1500 cubic yards per hour for a large deep digging dredge with 33 cubic foot buckets. Bucketline dredges used in the mining industry have their mineral processing plants mounted aboard the digging hull. Since dredges are high capital cost items, they require large ore reserves, typically at least ten years. Because of their high capital cost they are usually operated around the clock and for as many months of the year as weather conditions will permit. Typically a well run dredge operating year round would be expected to operate for 600 hours per month. Dredges operated in cold climates cannot operate when the weather freezes the dredge pond or the gravels, and dredges operating at sea cannot operate when high waves might batter the digging ladder against the bottom or upset the mineral extraction process.

Introduction Coal petrography is the microscopic study and description of coal and other organic substances in terms of the microscopically recognizable organic constituents and of the rank of the material. Petrography studies of coal and other organic substances are useful in themselves, and have a number of practical applications. Some of these include determining coking quality of coal, estimating yields of methane from coal beds, and assisting in coal preparation. Petrography studies can also help in mine planning, in source rock studies, in combustion problems, and in synthetic fuel applications. Most recently, petrography has been found to be useful in studying sediment-hosted ore deposits. Microscopic constituents-macerals Under the microscope, coal is a heterogeneous assemblage of the coalified remains of woody matter and plant remains from the swamp or bog from which the coal was formed. The individually recognizable materials making up the organic mass are termed macerals by petrographers. They are the organic equivalent of the minerals that make up rocks. Coal petrographers can examine coal in two ways. Those interested primarily in the microscopically transparent macerals or in the study of very low rank materials, lignites for examples, like to use transmitted light microscopy where light passes through a microsection about 3 to 6 µm (0.0001 to 0.0002 in.) thick (Fig. 1). The dominant red color of the section in Fig. 1 is inherent, not a stain or produced by a filter. Distinct suggestions of textures in the reddish constituents can be seen. The red material is vitrinite and is thought to be the coalified remains of woody tissues. The yellow, lenticular substance is exinite. It is what remains of the waxy coating on a spore. Also seen are white dots of mineral matter and black opaque material that is better seen and described in polished sections. A polished microsection is prepared by grinding and polishing to a mirror polish a compact of coal and embedding resin or a coherent chunk of coal. The resulting microsection is then examined in a reflecting microscope. High magnification, 200X to 400X, and an oil immersion lens are needed to resolve fully the macerals of the organic matter so prepared. Figure 2 shows two macerals, an even gray vitrinite, unstructured and fusinite, a whitish, more or less cellular constituent. Fusinite is thought to represent more or less completely carbonized cellular material. Coal petrographers appreciate that coal is a heterogeneous material. Figure 3 is a view of another section. The generally structureless gray material is vitrinite. The bean-shaped dark constituents are exinites. The long, narrow, somewhat scalloped dark constituent is cutinite. Cutinite is thought to be derived from leaf coatings. Some coal petrographers would describe the large white, structureless mass as micrinite. Others might prefer the term macrinite. A few fragments of fusinite can also be seen. Figure 4 shows a coalified fungal remain, termed sclerotinite. It is surrounded by vitrinite and crushed fragments of fusinite all floating in a sea of embedding resin. Sometimes the microscope reveals the great heterogeneity of coal even on the microscope scale. Figure 5 shows a section with semi-fusinite, inertodetritinite, vitrinite, and micrinite. The nature of the heterogeneity may be judged by noting that the long dimension of the photomicrograph is about 70 µm (0.0027 in.). Measurement of rank Hoffmann and Jenkner (1932) discovered that measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite constituent of coal in a polished section gave a good measurement of the rank of the coal. Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) software, released in 2018, integrates numerous empirical pillar design techniques. The ACPS program incorporates methodologies originally available as design tools from the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), including Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), and concepts including Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), the Mark-Bieniawski pillar formula, and pressure arch loading. The design methodologies that are the basis of ACPS were developed via analysis of significant amounts of real-world data and have been standards of the United States coal industry for decades. While there are empirical factors built into ACPS, making it ideal for use in U.S. coalfields, the concepts in the program have proven to be applicable in variable mine settings, and the software was developed to allow for user-based, site-specific modifications of key design inputs. Application of ACPS to cases outside the regions for which it was developed must be approached carefully, and continuous development of site-specific data is mandatory. A case study is presented involving the application of ACPS to assess pillar stability and assist future design for an underground lignite mine in Eastern Europe. Assessment of in-mine observations, review of the geology of the lignite mine, and evaluation of specific conditions associated with a failure event resulted in “calibration” of key input factors to ACPS. Scenarios evaluated with ACPS suggest that pillar strength and overburden depth are key factors for the determination of pillar stability and design in future areas.

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. This allows for the degree of load sharing etween the two odies to e calculated allowing for a more efcient design. hile modern codes outline the use of limit states with factors on applied actions, limit states are not typically compatible with ground-structure interaction models. Consequently, the engineer is left to develop rational methods for incorporating load factors into their analyses. Several methods can be considered, including the Largest Factor Method, Averaging Method, Subtraction Method, and Split Factor Method. This paper discusses the approaches, compares their effects using a case example, and provides a recommendation for designers.

In analyzing cost performance, managers must initially consider the issue of scope. Is the analysis for a single responsibility center or multiple centers? For a single period or a number of periods? If multiple responsibility centers are being examined, how can managers compensate for differences in their sizes? Several techniques have been developed to analyze the relationships in a set of financial statements at a single point in time and the trends in these relationships over multiple periods. Cross-sectional techniques focus on the first of these, and time-series techniques look at the latter. Although this text focuses on cost performance, these methods also can be used for revenue-related analyses.

INTRODUCTION In 1957, diamond drilling on a magnetic anomaly indicated an extensive zone of copper mineralization on what is now the Craigmont Mines property. By mid¬1958, drilling established a copper ore body. Milling commenced in September 1961 at 4536 t/d (5000 stpd) and by the end of October 1977 the mine had produced 339 662.04 t (374,363.9 st) of copper. At present, two-thirds of the mill feed is derived from underground operations and one-third from low-grade surface stockpiles. Craigmont Mines is situated 209 km (130 air miles) northeast of Vancouver (see Fig. 1), 16 km (10 miles) west of the town of Merritt, a logging, ranching, and mining community of about 7000 people. It is serviced by paved highways, Canadian Pacific Railway, British Columbia Hydro, and Inland Natural Gas Co. Water is pumped from the Nicola River, a distance of 6 km (4 miles) and a lift of 244 m (800 ft). In March 1967, the open pit mining operations at Craigmont Mines reached their economic limit and were suspended. Before this, it had been decided that a sub¬level caving method of underground mining would be used to supply ore to the concentrator after the cessation of open pit production. This chapter describes the fac¬tors influencing the choice of mining method, some of the problems encountered, mining practices, and results. GEOLOGY The ore bodies of upper Triassic age are located in a limy horizon striking east-west, closely paralleling the intrusive Guichon batholith, bounded on the south by rhyolites and on the north by graywackes, and dipping steeply to the south (Figs. 2a, b). The ore bodies are relatively narrow with a maxi¬mum width of 79 m (260 ft), a combined strike length of 853 m (2800 ft), and a vertical extent of 610 m (2000 ft). Chalcopyrite is virtually the only copper mineral, and 20% of the ore zone consists of acid solu¬ble magnetite and hematite. The area has been subjected to considerable faulting and brecciation, which is a major factor in the mining operation. Total geological reserves, at 0.7% Cu cutoff, for the deposit were 22 316 743 t (24,600,000 st) at 1.89% Cu. An additional 5 236 270 t (5,772,000 st) at 0.6% Cu were mined from the open pit. Ground Conditions The waste rocks-graywacke, andesites, and diorite -are relatively incompetent due to the high degree of fracturing and jointing, and all require varying degrees of support. The ore zones are somewhat less fractured; ground support is still required, however, although to a lesser extent than in the country rock. Ground conditions in the main ore body are better than in the smaller, nar¬rower ore bodies. Clayey fault gouge is present in most of the faults; gouge zones may be up to 6 or 9 m (20 or 30 ft) wide. The main ground problems are associated with local weakness rather than pressure. Shape of Ore Bodies (Figs. 2a, b and 3a, b) The main No. 1 ore body is approximately 244 m (800 ft) long and 46 m (150 ft) wide. It extends ver¬tically from the original top of the open pit at 4200 ele¬vation to just below the 3060 level. The No. 2 ore body is approximately 304 m (1000 ft) long, varies from stringer width at the extremities up to 79 m (260 ft) wide, and extends from 3060 level to 2400 level. Both these ore bodies have extensions re¬sulting in additional small irregular bodies. Ore bodies are mostly steep dipping, though part of the Wing ore body, an extension of No. 2 ore body, dips at 0.87 rad (50'). This ore body varies in size, but is approximately 122 m (400 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and about 213 m (700 ft) high. No. 1 Limb ore body is a narrow extension of the No. I Main with a vertical extent of 137 m (450 ft), average width of 18 ft (60 ft), a strike length of 152 m (500 ft), and dips steeply at 1.4 rad (80°). No. 1 East is an eastern extension of the No. 1 Main with a vertical extent of 183 m (600 ft), a strike length of 91 m (300 ft), an average width of 30 m (100 ft), and dips at 1.2 to 1.4 rad (70 to 80°). No. 1 South is at the upper west end of the open pit with a vertical extent of 76 m (250 ft), a strike length

Introduction The use of diesel engines as an alternate power source in US underground coal mines has been a controversial step towards more efficent mining practices. Three areas of potential benefit are foreseen. First, diesel-powered mining equipment is believed to be more efficient, resulting in less occupational risk for any given amount of production. Second, diesels are believed to pose fewer intrinsic hazards, especially those related to fires and ignition of combustibles. Finally, several other health and safety advantages are foreseen for diesel units. Each of these issues will be discussed separately. Diesel Efficiency Proponents of the use of underground diesel-powered mining equipment point to increased production efficiency due to greater maneuverability, speed, power, and payload (Bradbury, 1973; Jorgensen, 1982; Ogden, 1978; Wenberg, 1979; Olsen, 1980). Units most suitable for diesel power include LHD vehicles, shuttle cars, personnel carriers, and maintenance vehicles. Estimates of increased efficiency vary from 60%-300% and more (Wenberg, 1979). Increased diesel mining efficiency is usually viewed as making it practical to mine lower grade seams. Diesel units can also operate over a wider range of floor pitches and distances than electrically-powered units, thus allowing mining of seams with special mining problems (Olsen, 1980). Diesel application is not a universal substitute for electrical power. For example, continuous miners are unlikely diesel candidates. Reduced Intrinsic Hazards Proponents of diesel use have pointed to the increased safety potential due to a reduction in electrocutions, arcs, burns, underground cable fires, and methane ignition (Ogden, 1978). Diesel units are frequently employed in maintenance activities for lifting and moving, and for coal cleanup. Thus the case is made that diesel use, by making powered operations more conveniently available, reduces the incidence of lower back injuries and related causes for days lost due to disability (Olsen, 1980). Several other issues relating to diesel safety have also been suggested. Diesel units can continue operation even during power outages allowing, for example, personnel evacuation. The maneuverability of diesel units make them particularly attractive in difficult physical conditions, such as long haulage from the face to the belt and in areas where water is deep. The case for diesel use focuses heavily on the potential for a "per worker" reduction in accidents, or a reduction in the severity of accidents. Since accidents are a major part of the health impact of mining, a reduction in accidents and resulting injuries would make a major contribution to the health of coal miners. Opposition to Diesel Use Opposition to the use of underground diesel mining equipment in the US seems to have started with the United Mine Workers of America. Some opposition to US diesel use has been based on a widely publicized 1976 letter from NIOSH to Mine Enforcement and Safety Administration administrator Robert Barrett (NIOSH, 1982). In essence, this letter warned that while insufficient evidence existed as to diesel effects on underground coal miners, NIOSH had concerns based on prior knowledge of separate diesel exhaust constituents and the potential for interaction between these constituents and coal mine dust. Current opposition to underground diesel use has focused on respiratory health effects related to diesel emissions, particularly nitrogen dioxide (NO,), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate content (Barrett, 1982). Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). The number of underground work entities operating under reduced dust standards in U.S. coal mines has been increasing since the start of the decade of the 80s and is currently approaching 10,000. The concern for controlling the quartz levels in airborne respirable dust in coal mine has manifested itself in several improvements in equipment selection and operation, face ventilation practices, and dust control procedures. At the same time, fundamental studies have been initiated on determining the source-sink relationships of the airborne quartz dust. The P-7 method is the prescribed method for the determination of quartz in the respirable airborne dust samples from coal mines. Questions have been raised on the reliability of the P-7 infrared spectrometry method for quartz analysis in powders. No specific method has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples from the mine. In a recent study on the relationship between quartz in the airborne dust and that in the materials being mined, both infrared (IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used on a suite of samples from several coal mines. These samples encompassed airborne respirable dust samples, airborne total dust samples, the oversize fraction from the respirable samplers, ROM samples, channel samples, and chip samples from the face, roof, and floor materials. In this paper, the sample preparation and analysis procedures for the samples are discussed. The data, analysis results, and comparisons of the P-7 and XRD results are presented. The quartz percent determined for the same sample by the two methods are different. In 85% of the samples analyzed, the quartz percents determined by the XRD method are higher than those obtained by the P-7 method. However, there is a strong linear relationship between the results from the two methods. Further, the XRD method indicates an average of 20 percent more quartz than that from the P-7 method. The reasons for the differences in the results and the need for additional studies are explored.

While respirable dust monitoring has long been done on the basis of mass concentration, it is increasingly recognized that specific dust characteristics may play an important role in health outcomes. Scanning electron microscopy with energydispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) can be used for detailed particle analysis, but the quality of results can be dependent on the sample substrate; ideally, particles should be deposited on a smooth, uniform substrate like polycarbonate (PC). While direct air sampling onto PC filters is possible, this is not the standard approach in many situations. For example, in coal mines, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters are often used. They enable conventional mass-based analysis — of the total respirable dust, and the content of crystalline silica in this fraction — but are fibrous and thus not ideal for SEM-EDX or other microscopy. To address this issue, the current work tested a simple method to recover respirable dust particles from PVC filters and redeposit them to PC. Results generally indicated that recovered particles are representative of the original dust sample in terms of mineralogy distributions. Where this was not the case, the issue appeared to be with high particle loading density during SEM-EDX work rather than related to the recovery/redeposition method itself. This bodes well for applications where a single PVC filter sample could be used for nondestructive analysis to determine respirable dust mass and/or respirable silica mass, followed by preparation for SEM-EDX analysis to evaluate particle characteristics. This work applies the definition of "separation function" already introduced in the paper presented at the XVIII IMPC. This 'function" (defined for a certain size distribution after comminution of an ore) refers to the recovery distribution of a mineralogical species in a product made up of all the particles having at least a given content of that species. Many tests would be required to determine the liberation function for each mineralogical species, particularly for complex ores. Several stages of comminution would need to be examined and the mineralogical composition of the particles of each grain size class would need to be analyzed for each process step. A quick and dirty method is shown for obtaining the "separation function". It is based on the processing of data from topological maps of polished and/or thin representative sections of ore. By superimposing grids of different sizes over these maps and with appropriate combinations of mesh sizes, it is possible to simulate the grain size distributions linked to different stages of comminution and then evaluate the mineralogical composition of each grain. The procedure is carried out full automatically and can simulate a complete treatment circuit, imposing cut-off grades for the products at each separation phase. It is also possible to predict the results of treatment processes that involve grinding phases. The procedure has been successfully applied to complex ores containing several useful components.

The objective of this paper is to present preliminary capital and operating cost estimates (±25%) comparing conventional carbon-in-solution (CIS) with resin-in­solution (RIS) using AuRIX® 100 for the recovery of gold and silver from typical heap leach solutions. Preliminary testwork was carried out with AuRIX® 100 using real and synthetic leach solutions to determine the technical viability of the resin for gold/silver recovery and to provide process design parameters for the preliminary RIS circuit. The scope of the resin testwork was sufficient to support the level of accuracy applied in the capital and operating cost estimates. No parallel testwork was carried out with activated carbon. Industry standard design data and operating data from existing CIS operations were used as a basis for the comparison. Both the capital and operating cost comparisons indicate a substantial savings for a RIS circuit using AuRIX® 100 (- 14 to 18% in terms of capital and 25 to 35% in terms of operating costs) over a conventional CIS circuit depending upon solution flows and grade.

The well-being of any company is directly related to the well-being of its employees and to the effectiveness with which the personnel resource is managed. In an era when personnel management has steadily become more complex, there is an increased awareness of employee information systems at all levels of management due to: (1) regulations enacted by federal, state, and local government agencies; (2) technological advances within the mining industry which have resulted in the requirement for highly skilled personnel; (3) increasing concern for the confidentiality of employee information; and (4) management's need for information for planning purposes to control costs and for early recognition of trends and potential problems. In the past it was sufficient to maintain records manually. Today computers are necessary to provide information on short notice and effectively manipulate large volumes of' data. This discussion will describe the following aspects of employee information systems: (1) collection and maintenance of information, and (2) applications which include employee health, salary administration, management re- sources, and labor negotiations.

During 1982, record advances have been achieved in the excavation of vertical shafts with a V-Mole (a vertical shaft boring machine). The V-Mole, supplied by Wirth GmbH in Erkelenz, West Germany, has been used in West German coal mines since the early seventies, mainly for the construction of internal shafts. In 1981, it was brought into the United States for the construction of a series of ventilation shafts with depths varying between 512 m (1680 ft.) and 622 m (2040 ft.) excavated to 7.0 m (23 ft.) diameter. These shafts were needed for the development of coal mines for Jim Walter Resources, Inc. in Brookwood, Alabama. After a description of the mechanized shaft excavation system with the V-Mole, the conditions and parameters, such as ground, shaft dimensions, and linings are discussed. These factors are important considerations for a technically and economically feasible utilization of the V-Mole. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of using the V-Mole technology in comparison to other shaft construction methods are evaluated.

INTRODUCTION With the discovery and depletion over the years of near surface ore bodies, exploration targets are tending to be at greater depth or overlain by various types of overburden which in some cases extends to considerable depth or is heavily water bearing. Access to these types of deposits for exploration and development often requires vertical shafts. This paper discusses the concept of small shaft engineering and construction, primarily for underground exploration but also for use as a low tonnage production facility or for mine ventilation. The option of a small shaft may be attractive in a number of cases, some of which are: The underground exploration of a deposit at depth where minimal expenditure is desirable until the potential of the deposit has been determined. The exploration shaft in many cases later serves as a ventilation way and second means of egress. Production of ore in a small tonnage/high-grade operation where decline access is impractical. For ventilation where other types of openings are impractical or would delay start-up of mine operations.

Bacterial oxidation processes have often been repo1ted as releasing large amounts of energy so that a large scale operation would require cooling to maintain the required operating temperature for the bacterial culture. These reports are based on the chemical heat release which in some eases has been adjusted for the energy required to fonn the mass of bacterial cell matter per unit volume of solution. There are two flaws in this approach for calculating energy release in the fonn of heat. The first flaw is that it only considers the bacteria in solution. The second assumption is that the only bacterial reaction is the fonnation of cell material and others such as energy for respiration and locomotion are not considered.

Feeding laterite nickel slurry into high pressure acid­leach (HPAL) autoclaves in an aggressive environment with slurries heated up to 200°C requires a special pump design. For decades the GEHO piston diaphragm pumps have been used for autoclave feeding at gold ore pressure oxidation plants with slurries up to l 77°C. Lessons learned from these installations have been instrumental in designing second generation feed pumps for processing laterite nickel with operating temperatures of 200°C and a flow rate of 400 m3/h. The Australian nickel industry is using momentarily 8 GEHO positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps. For this application six GEHO ZPM 900 "dropleg" pumps have been supplied to the Murrin Murrin project and two to Bulong.
