Airflow velocity vectors by a forcing auxiliary fan at a heading face were measured in an actual size model gallery and an actual mine. The location of an outlet of ventilation duct gives significant effects on the airflow at the heading in the gallery. It was also found that there were several stagnated regions which may have danger of methane accumulation. The flow were also examined using the visualization technique by laser light in a reduced scale model. The flow in reduced scale model showed similar behavior to those observed in actual size galleries. The air velocity at the outlet has no significant effect on the airflow. It was found that a region to be ventilated by the direct flow of the exhaust fan is limited to a relatively short distance but a secondary flow region is generated near the heading face. CFD ( Computational Fluid Dynamics ) method was also developed to examine the airflow. The calculated results coincides with those measured by actual and reduced scale models. It is concluded that the CFD is useful tool for the analysis of ventilation at the headings.

Bauxite ores in Fokida belong to Parnassus-Giona zone and are found exclusively in limestone in two bauxite horizons, which are of great economic importance and with very unfavorable conditions for the reclamation process. The ore bodies are usually less than two million tones. They are in many cases encountered near the surface as a result of the erosion and are exploited either with open pit or underground methods. Mining activity, which dates back 70 years, causes many changes to the environment and most of all to vegetation and landscape. The first step to mining exploitation of bauxite ores is the selection of an underground or open pit method taking into consideration mostly economical and technical criteria. Open pit exploitation, which causes the most severe environmental consequences, is done with the method of vertical benches in hard rock with the use of explosives. The impacts on the landscape that result from the method of vertical benches are: ? The front of the excavation that is usually solid rock of the hanging wall (limestone). The height of the benches varies from 10 to 20 meters and the gradient of the final slope is designed to be around 65o, unless the rock is not so stable and the gradient is reduced accordingly.

This paper describes the local estimation of mineral inventory by kriging. A mineral deposit located between two working levels of a copper mine was examined. Data for this estimation was obtained by underground diamond drilling. The mineral inventory that was computed by this method was compared to the results obtained by global estimation techniques, which were based on information front surface boreholes. A comparison between the ore reserves estimated through kriging and the ore reserves estimated at the mine using conventional methods was also made. This analysis shows that geostatistical methods can be applied to evaluate base-metal deposits similar to the deposit examined in this study. In the part of the mine that was examined, the kriging estimates show an overall increase in metal content at all cutoff grades, compared to the estimates obtained through conventional methods. Also, the ore body profiles are more continuous and regular through kriging, but they are not radically different from the profiles that were previously obtained at the mine. However, the global estimate of the deposit using kriging could not provide reliable results.

This paper describes a wind tunnel modelling study on airflow and pollutant concentration in a large open pit mine located in southern China. A 1:1000 scale model of the surface mine was fabricated and placed in a wind tunnel. Airflow velocity in the test section of the wind tunnel can be continuously adjusted from 0.3 m/s to 6.0 m/s. In this study, both the present pit condition and the projected final pit condition were modelled. Airflow direction and velocity profiles were obtained. The impact of wind direction and velocity on airflow was also studied. The pollutant concentration distribution in the open pit was simulated using smoke, and a distribution profile was obtained. Respirable dust concentrations at the mine site were measured, then its concentrations at the projected final pit condition were estimated using the obtained pollutant concentration distribution profile. Under normal meteorological conditions, it is expected that the respirable dust concentration for the final pit should not exceed the government standard. One of the most important decisions in mine development is the selection of the mining method. Open pit or underground methods are selected depending on the shape of the deposit, and its position with respect to the surface. When the decision is not clear or evident, then the common rule is to compare underground and open pit projects to choose the one which yields the maximum return. However, in some circumstances' the best alternative is to start-up the operation with an open pit until a point where mine operating costs make more convenient to employ an underground method. In this case, the final pit limit is not directly related with commodity prices and its position is a funtion of capital and operating costs associated with both methods. The goal of this paper is a mans of establishing the proper ultimate pit considering a potential underground mine. The methodology is quite simple and can be implemented to work with a variety of available routines for pit optimization, such as Lerchs-Grossmann, floating cone, network flow and the Lemieux moving cone optimizing algorithm, which is the tool used by the author.

Recent research conducted by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Re¬search Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, which are tightly wrapped with many turns and which carry current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften, making them prone to damage. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor tem¬perature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125-, µm graded index multimode optical fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperatures with an accuracy of ± I °C over a length of 4 km at I -mintervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted that simulate actual mine conditions. Complex sulphide ores usually require very fine grinding of the whole ore stream to achieve adequate liberation. Recent improvements to DSM screens have made this device appear competitive with cyclones in circuits treating these ores. A DSM screen and cyclones were tested in pilot-scale grinding of a copper, lead, zinc ore and the resultant data were used to establish a multi-component simulation model. The model was used to assess the influences of mill environment, circuit flows and pulp densities, final product properties (size, relative size and SG of the values, and liberation characteristics) and a second grinding circuit on capacity and product size distributions, and hence define conditions for which one device is better than the other.

This paper re-examines the mixing conditions in the collection zone of flotation columns. These have in the past been characterized with a single uniaxial dispersion coefficient, E. The relationship between E and column diameter, Dc, is examined based on residence time distributions (RTDs) in columns of Dc ranging from 5.lcm to 184cm. Results agree with published correlations in chemical engineering, i.e. E a Dc '" , Data explain why pilot columns display significant upgrading between the feed level and the interface, whereas plant columns do not. It also suggests that, for plant columns, the full collection zone (up to the interface) can be considered when calculating the residence time. A mathematical model considering two regions of different mixing was compared to the single E model. Both models adequately fitted measured age distributions inside the column and overall RTDs. Measured and simulated mixing characteristics are compared to those of flotation banks, using a tanks-in-series approach; banks of comparable mixing to columns are identified.

The surface chemical sites on several fillers (quartz, feldspar, calcite and granite) were studied by the adsorption of well defined acid and basic probe molecules (benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol, ethyl benzoate, pyridine and benzyl amine) from cyclohexane. The results provided a wide variation of adsorption data, emphasizing the extensive range of site heterogeneity on the filler surfaces. In addition, it was shown that the acidic probes were strongly adsorbed on all of the minerals, thus indicating that the basic surface sites dominate the acidic ones. Also, through FTIR studies with vapor-phase probes adsorbed on orthoclase, it was possible to identify the nature of specific sites and the type of bonding occurring between the filler surface and the probe molecule. These types of surface analytical techniques could give useful information for predicting the adsorption functional groups on dispersants, dyes, thickeners, etc. and could lead to enhanced interfacial bonding between the filler and the matrix.

Chemical-constituent loads were determined for an alpine stream in southwestern Colorado that is affected by natural acid drainage from weathering of hydrothermally-altered rock and from acidic metal-rich discharge from abandoned mines. Base-flow loads were compared to storm-related loads using a tracer-dilution approach. A rainstom occurred during the tracer injection, providing the opportunity to measure metal loads before, during, and after storm runoff. Chemical-constituent loads during the storm increased by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude relative to base-flow conditions. The increase in loads was related to two distinct periods; (1) a flush of higher concentrations that occurred soon after rainfall began, and (2) the peak of storm runoff. The initial flush-having no measurable change in discharge--contained the highest loads of trace metals and dissolved iron. The chemical character of peak runoff was distinctly different, as evidenced by the highest loads of total and dissolved major elements and total iron.

Introduction The usefulness of microscopes in exploration and ore dressing, problems has been documented for the older generation of mining industry personnel in such publications as Schneiderhohn and Ramdohr (1931). A more recent publication that examines the subject is Process Mineralogy, a conference proceedings of The Metallurgical Society (TMS, 1981). However, it is worthwhile to review some of the principles and advantages of microscopic examination of rocks, ores, and mill products. Transmitted light Microscopists can look at materials in transmitted or reflected light. Studying transmitted light is what is usually meant by petrography. In this method, the light passes through the specimen. The upper polarizing filter can be moved in (crossed nicols) or out (open nicols) of the light path. The specimen can be a thin section, a slice of rock mounted on a glass slide and ground to 30 µm (>400 mesh). Or, it can be a sample of rock or ore crushed to about 70 µm (200 mesh). Transmitted light study is particularly suited to gangue minerals, such as quartz, carbonates, and feldspars, and to the study of alteration processes and products. It has some applications to liberation studies. Minerals are identified in transmitted light by observable and measurable optical parameters, such as cleavage and twinning. BHP Diamonds is developing Canada's first diamond mine, Ekati, located in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The mine is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%), Dia Met Minerals (29%), Charles Fipke (10%) and Stuart Blusson (10%). BHP Diamonds is part of BHP Minerals: Production at Ekati began Oct. 14,1998. The mine is situated on a 3,450-km2 (853,000-acre) claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT (Fig. 1). It is about 300 km (185 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to Echo Bay's Lupin Mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.

In recent years attempts have been made to fight open and intensive mine fires by the use of special extinguishers, which are able to produce great volumes of inert gases directed into the fire zone. These extinguishers are derived from turbo-jet engines used in aircrafts and adopted for operations in mine conditions. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention to a computer simulation method, enabling studies of dynamical behaviour of mine ventilation processes disturbed by open fires, which are also influenced by measures taken during fire fighting actions i.a. the mentioned operating extinguishers. The first part of this paper gives an account of the principles on which the computer simulation program, concerning the non- steady mine ventilation process, the fire as a heat source and the extinguisher as a source of inert gas and moisture has been based. The next part of this paper deals with simplifying assumptions and the subsequent limitations of the derived simulation pro- gram. Finally, from an example of a computer simulation, the results will be presented and relations shown between parameters characterising the ventilation process during the fire fighting action.

Relatively simple techniques have been developed which enable the electrochemistry of sulfide minerals to be studied with particles varying in size from above 100 pm to less than 1 pm. Both oxidative and reductive processes have been studied wing the minerals pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite. It has been shown that it is possible to completely oxidise or reduce the minerals during a single voltammetic sweep. The resulting voltammogram produces peaks which are characteristic of each mineral and can be used to qualitatively identify the minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite, it has been demonstrated that the charge involved in the anodic oxidation can be quantitatively related to the amount of copper dissolved. Quantitative information can be obtained using peak fitting techniques. Interesting differences in the behaviour of the minerals in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids have been observed, particularly in the case of pyrite for which a second major peak is obtained which has been attributed to the oxidation of elemental sulfur in the presence of chloride ions. The technique offers the possibility of providing mineralogical information of individual particles based on an electrochemical voltammetic finger print.

High gradient permanent magnetic separators (termed "Ferrous Wheel") are described as used to recover the iron bearing minerals from mill tailings at the Grupo Acerero del Norte's Hercules iron mines in Coahuila, Mexico. The pilot scale test work as well as the "in-plant" test work provided the basis for a 385 MTPH plant expansion to be commissioned late in 1995. Approximately 6 million metric tons of flotation tailings averaging 50 percent iron, mostly as hematite, are contained in two separate ponds. The tailings are relatively fine at 93 percent -200 mesh and 72 percent -500 mesh. After testing various recovery methods, a high gradient permanent magnetic separator was selected to produce a preconcentrate prior to flotation. The separator uses a flux converging matrix to generate high gradient magnetic fields and capture the hematite. The advantage of the Ferrous Wheel high gradient permanent magnetic separator is the use of permanent magnets as opposed to electro-magnets. Further the vertical rotating ring is much more conducive to matrix cleaning as opposed to the conventional horizontal ring separators. This feature also allows the use of a wide range of matrix materials to achieve the optimum metallurgical response

Introduction The Kaiser Resources Ltd. hydraulic coal mine is located in south eastern British Columbia, Canada, at the western end of the Crowsnest Pass, next to the Town of Sparwood. The seam presently being mined is the number 10, known locally as the Balmer seam, which is a high quality coking coal, 50 feet in thickness and of an average inclination of 35 degrees. The mine was designed in the late sixties as a small scale trial unit, and was to use a single monitor unit, working 3 shifts per day on a 5 day per week basis. Experience has proved the method to be so successful as to warrant the expansion of the ancilliary facilities to cater for the increased production. The annual raw coal production from this single monitor unit has risen from 108,988 short tons in 1970 to 942,334 short tons in 1975, with a total mine labour force of about 160 men including the surface de-watering plant, mine supervision and mine administration.

It is essential for a. mining company to determine an optimal mining strategy which will maximize the return on investment. In the case of Placer Development Ltd., the Lerch-Grossman three-dimensional optimization technique has been implemented on a digital computer to assist in the determination of such a strategy. It is the purpose of this chapter to explain and illustrate the methodology of the Placer Development Ltd. computer system with emphasis on the feasibility phase of a mine's development. In the Placer Development Ltd. strategy determination process, it is essential that certain objectives be considered: 1) There must be some means of constructing a realistic computer model of an ore body which gives a significant weight to geological constraints. 2) Data must be accurate and quantifiable. 3) Computer solutions must be unique, i.e., approximation or iteration methods of determining optimal solutions are undesirable. A method must be used which, when given fixed parameters and data, yields a mathematically sound unique solution. The following material is a presentation of how these objectives have been implemented. The flow of this outline will be from the general to the specific, with an example application.

Brenda Mines, located 22 km Northwest of Peachland in British Columbia, Canada was an open pit copper- molybdenum mine which closed in 1990 after 20 years of operation. The primary concern in Brenda's tailings and waste rock drainage is molybdenum at a concentration of approximately 3 mg/L. The mine drainage is alkaline and contains little or none of the typically problematic heavy metals. Given that the waters downstream are used for municipal water supply and some irrigation, a discharge limit of 0.25 ma molybdenum was imposed with specific water quality guidelines in the receiving creek. A review of all existing and potential molybdenum removal methods was undertaken prior to mine closure. The chosen process is a two-step iron co-precipitation with clarification and sand filration at a slightly acidic pH. A 4,000 usgpm (912 m3/h) treatment plant was constructed and commissioned in 1998, at a cost of $10.5M. The successful removal of molybdenum from the drainage water is explained with details on some design innovations and operational challenges encountered during plant start-up. Investigated sludge disposal options are discussed although the long term disposal scenario has not yet been finalised.

A test to characterize the amount of gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given and possible uses are discussed. The overall database, which includes 68complete tests, is presented. The ore samples treated had an average GRG content of 63% of the total gold in the sample, with a standard deviation of 20% and a range of 3% to 97%. Both the F8(, of gold and the GRG content at a grind of 100% finer than 850 pm correlate well with the overall GRG content (at 80%finer than 75 pm). The primary use of the test is to determine whether gravity recovery should be used and how. Results can also be used to predict gravity recovery, as many of the ores tested are from plants employing gravity recovery. Gravity-circuit simulation can be used to refine recovery estimates or for optimization studies.
