Although it is only utilized in a few U.S. longwall mines, a bleederless ventilation system can be an effective spontaneous combustion control method in mines with a demonstrated history of spontaneous combustion. In order to provide insights for the optimization of bleederless ventilation systems for U. S. underground coal mines, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas with a bleederless ventilation system. A single longwall panel with a bleederless ventilation system was simulated, and typical ventilation data for a longwall mine was used in the simulations. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were estimated using a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. The effects of gob permeability and resistance of the collapsed entries on the spontaneous heating were studied. The effectiveness of nitrogen injection to prevent spontaneous heating in the gob was also examined. Discharge regulations for mine waters require relatively low concentrations for cyanide and metals, and the trend is for discharge limits to be lowered. In the event conventional treatment practices are not sufficient to meet discharge limitations, advanced treatment technologies such as ion exchange and reverse osmosis may be considered. Though these technologies will provide discharge quality waters, they also require the disposal of a concentrated brine and are relatively complex and costly to operate. Many mine sites currently using activated carbon in precious metals recovery present the opportunity to economically operate an activated carbon water treatment plant for polishing of effluents. This paper presents summaries of six ( 6) mining operations which have evaluated or use activated carbon for treatment of water and which also use carbon in precious metals recovery processes.

In the author's selenium report of 1994 (1), the literature was culled for selenium removal technologies that had a chance of producing effluents with <10 ppb of total selenium. Very few processes could achieve such low concentrations. The EPA dictates such low concentrations. Discharges to fishery waters must be <5 ppb total selenium. The federal max­imum contaminant level ( MCL) for drinking water is 50 ppb. The EPA regulations are for total selenium, not for the species, perhaps because an approved EPA assay method is atomic absorption and it cannot distinguish between species.

The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The EMEW technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. In particular application of the EMEW cell for recovery of silver offers significant operating and capital cost advantages over conventional Merrill Crowe technology used for cyanide based solutions. The cell also offers process advantages for direct silver recovery from nitric acid solutions. The performance of the EMEW® cell on silver cyanide solutions, producing high grade silver metal in a single step, is accomplished by providing a physical mechanism which presents metal ions to the cathode on a highly efficient and continuous basis. The simplicity of design and operation of the EMEW cell offers the following advantages for silver recovery from cyanide or nitrate based solutions: • High grade product in a single step. • Selective for silver over other metals in the electrolyte. • Wide operating concentration range (100,000 - 5ppm). • Ability of the cell to operated in a variety of acid or alkaline electrolytes. (Cyanide, Nitrate). • Simple liquor reticulation. • No pretreatment required - Clarification, deaeration or zinc dust. • High cmTent density and current efficiency compared to conventional electrowinning cell. • Modular design allows for flexible operation and production rate. • Pilot plant results using full scale cell result in accurate scale up design. • Easy/fast installation - cell banks are delivered pre configured with piping and wiring. • Enclosed cell minimizes corrosive vapor and liquid losses in the circuit.

Thiourea is recognized as a technically competitive alternative to cyanide for gold and silver extraction for a variety of ores and concentrates. This paper describes the results of a recent mini-pilot locked cycle test comparing cyanidation with acidothioureation treatment of gold bearing sulphide concentrate. The gold extractability of both methods was similar. The comparative metallurgical operating conditions and test results are summarized. Detailed byproduct solution analyses and environmental toxicity test results are presented and suggest that thioureation might result in acutely toxic byproducts even after treatment. Comparative process economics are summarized based on preliminary commercial operating flowsheets derived for the locked cycle case study. Capital and operating cost estimates are shown. The results indicate that cyanidation is more economically favorable within the constraints of the case study. Considerations for process selection between thioureation and cyanidation, for conceptual case studies, are discussed.

The environment for process engineers today is very different from 20 years ago. The ideas and mathematical description of models for a multitude of different unit operations is an ongoing development. The computer tools to deal with the mathematics are readily available and specialist companies have developed, tested and verified their models. The challenge for the process engineer is to know which package to use and to know whether a particular application is the most accurate for the specific process. Metallurgical simulation programs today are well known and proven. Certain programs are specialized while others are broader based. The needs of each user are dependent on the application. The research work outlined in this paper examines the utility of index tests for evaluating the strength of coal, both in the laboratory and in-situ. For routine evaluation of strength and deformation properties of coal seams, as inputs for design in stability analysis and equipment selection, the index tests are cost-effective and also make less demand on time and manpower. Four index tests, namely Protodyakonov Index, Cone Indenter Index, the Point Load Strength Index and Schmidt Rebound Hammer, were evaluated for 13 coal samples and correlated to fundamental strength and deformation properties such as uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of the same coal stratum. The index tests, barring Point Load Index, showed relatively low percentage scatter compared to the fundamental strength and show marked advantages for routine estimation of coal seam strength.

To prevent duplication of effort for future generations, the fol¬lowing corrections are offered. These errors were discovered during a recent study in which a computer program for mine hoist rope selection was developed (Lineberry and Mateer, 1988). In order of increasing gravity: Captions for Figs. 3 and 4 are transposed. • Purported to be a more accurate method of rope selection than the process of successive approximation, the direct method assumes linearity between a given rope&apos;s minimum breaking strength, T, and unit rope weight, Wv. Because of the sensitive location of the constant, K, in equation (8) for breaking strength, the significance of this nonlinearity is magnified. For a typical 6 x 37 class fiber core wire rope (Wire Rope Corp. of America, 1985), K actually varies from 43,650 to 52,190, depending upon rope diameter. The effects of the enzyme, peroxidase, on the sedimentation and consolidation characteristics of Florida phosphate slimes were investigated. Results indicate that pretreatment with the enzyme was beneficial for slime dewatering and consolidation. Biological activity, resulting from slime pretreatment with the enzyme, induced higher mechanical binding between slime particles.
