Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works. Introduction Americans have long been proud of their ability to recognize a need, define it, and then develop workable solutions. The U.S. underground coal conversion (UCC) program is a good example. In 1974, the need to utilize coal resources that could not be mined was recognized, and Congress gave the Bureau of Mines $1.7 million to gain a better understanding of the UCC technology and its potential applications. Since 1977 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) was formed, workable technologies have been tested, the market for underground coal conversion has been recognized, and extensive industrial interest has developed. Perspective The U.S. is blessed with extensive coal resources. Coal supplies about 19% of our national energy needs, yet recently promulgated environmental standards and increasing mining costs have limited direct coal use. UCC potentially can use coal that is economically or technically infeasible to mine because the coal is too thick, deep, dirty, high-ash, and wet; has an excessive angle of dip; or has unpredictable and poor over-burden characteristics that make mining unsafe. Coal can be gasified underground or perhaps liquefied below the earth's surface. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the prime element of the underground coal conversion program. It enables coal to be converted to gas underground. UCC Coal Resource Recent data show a total U.S. coal resource base of about 6.4 trillion tons. Of this, 1.8 trillion tons might be accessed by UCC, including some minable coal. A commercial UCC process could quadruple roughly the 450 billion tons of U.S. coal reserves, which presently are recoverable by mining. The U.S. coal resources are divided into five sectors. The two most eastern sectors contain relatively thin, swelling bituminous coals that are difficult to gasify. Of the two, the bituminous coal in the Eastern Province is the most difficult because it is deeper than in the Interior Province and the terrain is more rugged. The sector along the Rocky Mountains contains huge amounts of thick low-rank coals that are the most promising for early development by UCC. The coal has good continuity and the terrain is suitable. INTRODUCTION Stillwater Tunnel construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 1973. The tunnel will be the site of an extensive program in rapid excavation research. This paper presents a progress report regarding our plans and relates the tentative decisions which have been made on how to carry out the research effort. The details are subject to revision as more input is obtained from other Government agencies interested in tunnel construction and from experts in industry and educational institutions. The objective of the research program is to bring about faster, less costly tunnel construction. This objective will be pursued through the development, improvement, and evaluation of various construction systems and investigative techniques. The need for this kind of program was recognized by the National Research Council, in its authoritative report "Rapid Excavation - Significance, Needs, Opportunities." (1) The Council advocated a federally funded $200 million, 10-year program to help meet the $69 billion market it expects in underground excavation between 1970 and 1990. The significance of tunnel construction to Reclamation is made clear by statistics of its tunneling experience and outlook. Reclamation has constructed 174 water conveyance tunnels totaling over 190 miles, Six tunnels are presently under construction which have a combined length of about 27 miles. There are on the books nine authorized, but unfunded tunnel projects totaling another 70 miles in length. Many more miles of tunnels are included in programs in various stages of investigation.

A problem that has continued to plague the Florida phosphate industry is loss of coarse phosphate in the flotation circuit. Attempts to remedy this problem such as floating the coarse material (plus 425 µm) in a separate circuit have resulted in limited success, but recovery is still not optimum. A fundamental examination of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of the coarse phosphate has led to results that seem to supersede common paradigms. The Bureau of Mines investigated conditioning parameters such as fatty acid/fuel oil dosage, residual clay content in the feed, conditioning time, mixing intensity, and conditioner solids content. The study revealed that the effect of all these parameters was important. However, it was discovered that contrary to common beliefs, the conditioning time affected the grade of the rougher concentrate much more than the recovery. Specifically, the longer the conditioning time, the less quartz that was floated. It was also discovered that high mixing intensity conditioners could lower the conditioning time required for good grade. Many phosphate operators use low intensity drum type conditioners. Optimizing the conditioning time, mixing intensity, and other conditioning parameters resulted in a rougher concentrate grading 30 pct P.2O5, with an attendant recovery of 95 pct.

INTRODUCTION Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and sili- cosis are only two of several diseases which are rlassed as pneumoconiosis. These are respiratory diseases caused by dusts which are inhaled and accumulated in the lungs. The individual particles of dust cannot be seen by the human eye. They are so small that they escape the natural cleansing mechanism of the nose and air passages and make their way down to the terminal air sacs of the lung where they injure the cells and cause the formation of scar tissue. Consequently, if there is exposure to high concentrations of dust over a period of time - usually, a number of years - the amount of scar tissue increases and begins to impair breathing. As a result, the miner develops shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing ad-if exposure continues - this progresses to permanent disability and frequently to death. Death is often due to pulmonary heart disease, the effect of stress on the heart 2s it tries to compensate for the weakened lungs. Specifically, silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by the accumulation of free silica (quartz) in the lungs. Silicosis is considered the most important form of pneumoconiosis, not only because of its seriousness as a respiratory crippler, but also because of the large number of workers who risk contracting it in a variety of occupations. Quartz is one of the most common substances of the earth's crust, estimated at about 60 percent. Silicosis has been found in coal, metal and granite miners, as well as in other workers, such as sandblasters and pottery makers. Silicosis is also known to predispose the lung to tuberculosis and to increase the chances that a worker will contract chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The seriousness of silicosis was tragically brought to public attention about 50 years ago. During 1932-34, workers were involved in digging a tunnel through rock at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. While their exposure time was relatively short, they developed silicosis because of the high concentrations of quartz. By 1936, 476 workers had died of silicosis and about 1500 were believed to have the disease (Washington Post, 1982). It is difficult to tell how many coal miners have silicosis. Because x-rays and breathing function tests do not show the difference the type of pneumoconiosis is generally diagnosed by the miner's work history. For example, if a worker

Results of investigations over approximately the last 10 years by the Bureau of Mines and others on technology for recovering cell-grade alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, dawsonitic oil shale, coal ash, and coal shale are reviewed. It is concluded that, although many innovative techniques have evolved from this effort and have been shown to be technically feasible, energy and economic considerations will prevent any of the processes from competing with the Bayer process under normal conditions. Based on the Bureau's experience, some variation of clay-HCI leaching, HC1 gas sparging crystallization has the greatest potential as an alternative to the Bayer-bauxite process.

In this paper, electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed along with the role of galvanic interactions in bioleaching. Polarization studies using a manganese nodule slurry electrode system indicated that the maximum dissolution of iron and manganese due to electrochemical reduction occurred at negative DC potentials of -600 and -1,400 mV(SCE). Electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans at the above negative applied DC potentials resulted insignificant dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt in IMH2S04 and in sulfuric acid solution at pH 0.5 and 2.0. Mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules are discussed. Galvanic leaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of externally added pyrite and pyrolusite for enhancement of dissolution was also studied. Various electrochemical and biochemical parameters were optimized, and the electroleaching and galvanic processes thus developed are shown to yield almost complete dissolution of all metal values. This electrobioleaching process developed in the laboratory may be cost effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Cyprus Pima is a medium-sized open-pit copper mine located 35 km (22 miles) south of Tucson, AZ. The ore body was discovered using geophysical prospecting methods in 1953 and was originally worked as a small underground mine followed by small open-pit operations. As mining equipment grew larger and the economic ore grade dropped, the operation grew in size, through four expansions, to the present 50 500 tpd (56 500 stpd) milling rate. The remaining stripping ratio is about 2.5 to 1. Mining equipment includes 11 electric shovels ranging in size from 6 to 15 m3 (8 to 20 cu yd) and 42 diesel-electric haulage trucks ranging in size from 89 to 223 t (100 to 250 st). Mine planning is performed at Cyprus Pima to serve several functions. The most important is to plan ahead, one year at a time, to predict the ore grade and stripping requirements on a month-by-month schedule. This yearly plan is necessary for budget preparation and is revised once each quarter to incorporate variations in actual production experienced during the preceding quarter.

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins: including the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State, and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of over 12,000 feet and vertical continuity in excess of 4,500 feet, along with mining widths from 5 to 50 feet, are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district and eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970’s. Open pit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines. Operations in the Berkeley pit were suspended in mid-1982 because of the rejection of high arsenic, copper concentrates at major smelting facilities throughout the world. Bulk mining of porphyry style mineralization in the Continental pit began in January 1980 to supplement copper production while stripping “C” pushback in the Berkeley pit. The Anaconda Smelter closed in September 1980. A molybdenum circuit was added to the Butte Concentrator in 1981 and mining continued in the Continental pit to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. A blend of Berkeley and Continental ores were processed to dilute penalty metals in the final concentrates marketed to toll smelters. All mining operations ceased mid-1983 when Anaconda closed the Continental pit and offered the property for sale. Montana Resources reopened the Continental pit in June 1986 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. Operations were suspended mid-2000, because of exorbitantly high power prices, but resumed in November 2003 with rising metal prices. Bulk open pit mining of the early porphyry style mineralization has sustained production over the past twenty years and mining is expected to continue in the Continental pit with favorable prices. Future mining will eventually develop a 500 million-ton geologic resource incorporated in a supergene enrichment blanket situated between the Berkeley pit and the Continental pit. Grades in this enrichment blanket range in the neighborhood of 0.5% copper.

The application of simulation to production planning at a large, complex open-pit mining operation proved to be challenging and enlightening. The mine is divided into two separate pits and several dump areas which are served by the same truck fleet. The operating system consisted of shovels of two different sizes, wheel loaders, and a fleet of three different truck types moving material from seven source locations to ten dumping sites. The interconnecting haulroad network included many common segments. There were operating constraints unique to the system, such as: traffic rules; manpower limitations; shovel, material-type, and destination priorities and production limitations; and a unique, non-centralized dispatching method for truck distribution. The truck distribution was further constrained by the matching of trucks to shovels, loaders, and destinations by truck type. The gathering and transformation of input data as well as the evaluation of results and validation of the model were also challenging. Despite a high level of sophistication in production reporting, some input data were neither readily available nor backed by field observation. As a result, many innovative techniques had to be used to develop realistic input data and to validate the simulation results. Nevertheless, this case study definitely proved the feasibility of applying computer simulation techniques to short and long range mine planning and budgeting at a large, complex mining operation.

Keith, John R. 1968. Relationships of lead and zinc contents of trees and soils, Upper Mississippi Valley District. Preprint, Fall 1968 Meeting, Soc. Mining Engineers of AIME. Lead and zinc contents of elm, maple, and oak trees and of soils in which the trees grew were determined in samples from the Upper Mississippi Valley mining district, and from an area outside but contiguous to the district. The lead and zinc analyses of plant materials served to differentiate the mineralized and non-mineralized areas. Stems contained about two times as much lead and about 2-5 times as much zinc as did leaves taken from the same stems. Lead and zinc analyses of all soil horizons could be used to differentiate between the two areas. Soils at most sample sites in the mineralized district seemed to be more reliable than plants for geochemical prospecting and are a more practical sampling medium. Soil samples from areas with thick loess cover, however, failed to indicate the presence of mineralized bodies whereas tree samples from the same sites contained anomalous amounts of lead and zinc. It is suggested that in areas of thick loess cover plant samples could be used in prospecting for lead and zinc.

With continuing pressure from stockholders not only to maintain but to increase mineral revenues, producers have increased plant capacity. Depressed mineral prices have accentuated the trend toward higher production rates to maintain consistent cash flow, and these same trends have promoted the development of large-scale processing equipment. In addition to the need to handle increased throughput, larger flotation equipment can result in decreased capital-equipment and operating costs. The development of larger column and conventional flotation equipment relies, in part, on suitable scale-up procedures. To properly scale-up large flotation cells and columns, certain constraints and design parameters must be taken into consideration, including velocities in the vessel, residence time, solids suspension, and lip loading. This paper will review the design constraints and scale-up criteria for WEMCO® flotation cells. Scale-up criteria are augmented with computational-fluid- dynamics analyses and high-speed imaging techniques, as well as multiple regresesion analysis of in-plant operational data.

Unsaturated flow and solute transport were studied in three large columns measuring 1.5 m diameter x 2 m height, loaded with up to 3.7 t of oxidised waste rock, which was excavated from the Stratmat pile at Heath Steele Division, Noranda Inc. and contained elevated concentrations of zinc in the pore water. The bottom of each column was partitioned into 37 squares, each of which was drained independently. Following rain simulations at the top of the rock bed, the drainage in each drain port was monitored for volume and physicochemical parameters at pre-determined intervals. This paper describes some of the observations resulting from the experiments. The main conclusion of the study is that unsaturated flows in waste rock are heterogeneous, and flow channelling is ubiquitous. The results imply that the transport of solutes from oxidised waste rock to its toe drainage is subject to various controlling mechanisms, including geochemical equilibrium control and successive pore water dilution control.

The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. INTRODUCTION Phosphate, one of the three major elements essential for all living plants and animals, has been mined in Florida for over a hundred years. Comprising roughly 80% of the U.S. total and 25% of the world's supply, the bulk of the 35 to 40 million annual ton output is converted to chemical fertilizers. With the exception of one mine in north Florida near the Georgia state line, today's mining activities are centered in the middle of the peninsula just east/southeast of Tampa in Polk, Hillsborough and Hardee counties. These "bone valley" deposits extend into Manatee and DeSoto counties, but there is little active mining there as yet. Because strip mining is, perhaps, the ultimate environmental insult and because Florida has a proactive environmental community, it is not surprising that the mining of phosphate rock has become increasingly controversial. This paper describes how phosphate rock is currently mined, the environmental problems presented by mining and processing the rock, and some mitigating technologies being employed to answer such problems. THE PHOSPHATE DEPOSIT AND ITS EXTRACTION Florida's phosphate deposits containing the calcium phosphate mineral, carbonate-fluorapatite, are between ten and fifteen million years old. The typical "bone valley" matrix is 15 feet thick and lies under 20 to 30 feet of overburden.(Fig. 1) Both the sandy overburden and matrix are unconsolidated and can be removed with standard 45 to 65 cubic yard, walking electric draglines. After removing the overburden, which is windrowed nearby, the dragline operator casts the matrix into a "slurry" pit where it is broken up by high pressure water monitors. Pit pumps (with boosters where necessary) transport the matrix slurry through 16 to 20 inch pipelines to a washer where the three components of the matrix (sand, clay and apatite) are separated. The phosphates contained in central Florida matrix are approximately half pebble/half flotation feed, through the pebble ratio decreases as the industry mines southward. Again, the matrix is roughly equally divided among sand, clays and apatite. The phosphatic clays, 75% of which are less than one micron in size, leave the washer as a 3 to 5% colloidal suspension. The impoundment of these waste clays is one of the environmental challenges to be discussed later. The sand (silica) is separated from the similarly sized phosphate particles by a double float process (fatty acid followed by a reverse mine or cleaner float), and the sand tailings are then pumped to disposal or reclamation sites. The apatite flotation product is combined with the screened phosphate pebbles and stacked to dewater before shipping.

INTRODUCTION The Milwaukee, Wisconsin Metropolitan Area provides an ideal opportunity to review the advancement of the art and science of mixed face tunneling in the past 65 years. Although there were earlier tunnel projects in the Milwaukee area, by other agencies, the majority of those driven in the Twentieth Century have been done under contract with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District through the agency of the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee and the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission of the County of Milwaukee. Legal Description of District The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District was created by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1921 together with the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission of the County of Milwaukee. This concept of subregional wastewater control was an outgrowth of an investigation and report from a commission appointed by the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee in 1909 to study final sewage disposal for the City. In 1911 that Commission, comprised of J. W. Alvord, George C. Whipple and Harrison P. Eddy, recommended that the City construct a water filtration plant, construct a Menomonee River flushing works, expand the intercepting sewer system and, after a thorough study of the then existing and developing methods of sewage treatment, construct a sewage treatment plant. In response to those recommendations, the Wisconsin Legislature, in Chapter 608 of the Laws of 1913, created the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee. Recognizing that the improvement of surface water quality would require action on a watershed basis, the Legislature, in Chapters 554 and 590. of the Laws of 1921, created the

1. INTRODUCTION Roadheaders have a shadowy origin - probably in Eastern Europe - but were introduced to Europe and the West by the importation of a Russian PK3 machine by the National Coal Board in 1961. A number of features rendered this type of machine an attractive tool for coal mine operators: its flexibility of operation, its combined cutting and loading ability, the opportunity it provided of making any shape of roadway, as well as its ability to cut some rocks. Encouraged and sponsored by the National Coal Board, the development of roadheaders was taken up in Great Britain, notably by Anderson Strathclyde and Dosco; in Europe, predominantly in numerical terms by Voest Alpine and Paurat. Over the 24 years since the importation of the first PK3, evolutionary development has taken place to the extent that machines are now available in many forms up to 120 tons in weight. Machine design has altered, partly as a result of increased power requirements and partly in line with the use of a ripping or a co-axial head. However, the basic concept remains: a boom containing a motor and transmission gear, with a driven cutting head at its extremity and capable of universal movement urged by hydraulic rams mounted on the boom turret and on the machine deck. Generally, the turret, hydraulic powerpack and all other necessary equipment are mounted on a chassis, which contains a discharge conveyor, the whole being carried on caterpillar tracks so that a complete machine entity is provided. INTRODUCTION Column-type supports are used to prevent roof falls in underground excavations. The first individual column supports were made from timber that was cut to fit the irregular heights of mine seams. Because the seam height of the material removed varied throughout the mine, timber posts generally could be used only once. During the I 920s, steel friction props began to appear in British and European mines, and, by the 1950s, thousands of these props were being used. However, the steel friction props were heavy, difficult to install, and difficult to recover. Furthermore, the friction props could not be preloaded, and their yielding behavior was rather erratic. In 1946, hydraulic props were introduced in En¬gland, and, within a few years, they replaced friction props throughout Europe. The first application of hy¬draulic props in the United States occurred in the 1950s, during early experiments with longwall mining. Modern technology and high-production mining procedures have combined to make the use of hydraulic props a very acceptable method of providing temporary heavy-duty support for production areas. In areas such as development headings, where only modest roof loads are expected, lighter-duty jackscrews, ratchet jacks, and light hydraulic props are used. ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SUPPORTS The acceptance of hydraulic supports has been wide¬spread during the past 25 years, proving their reliability and effectiveness in preventing roof falls. Some of the advantages provided by hydraulic supports are: 1) Individual hydraulic props can be installed within 30 sec, resulting in a minimum exposure of per¬sonnel and equipment to an unsupported roof. 2) Hydraulic props can be preloaded to more than 4.5 t (5.0 st), increasing the frictional resistance between the rock strata. Thus, the roof is kept tight, improving the behavior of the unsupported ground. 3) If gradual roof sagging or bottom heaving im¬poses an irresistible force, the hydraulic prop yields gradually and continues to support the ground. 4) The support capacities of the hydraulic props most widely used range between 10 and 20 t (11 and 22 st). Their support capacities are maintained during yielding to an irresistible force. 5) Hydraulic props can be recovered rapidly. Where no other supports are provided for the roof, as in pillar¬ing operations, the hydraulic props can be recovered by remote means. 6) The length of hydraulic props is readily adjust¬able allowing them to be reused in seams where roof height varies. 7) Studies of mining operations indicate that the use of hydraulic props increases both personnel safety and mine productivity. In the non-operational ?Górka? quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha, containing approximately 1 million ton wastes from high aluminium content materials (incl. about 400000 t of wastes from aluminum hydroxide production), and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water and infiltrates from the disposal site mentioned. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Górka pond is both their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and a variable analysis of pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides, first of all, remedial pumping and a treatment of effluents retained in the Górka reservoir. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant according to a process verified so far on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product, a brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl) whose amount may reach up to 100000 m3 might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine, which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. In parallel, an intake of underflows of infiltrates would be provided (previous geochemical identification) in order to take them away from the high aluminum site (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches). Such effluents would be subject to treatment. The successive stage is the utilization of approx. 50000 m3 of bottom slurry, left in the emptied reservoir, in the production of self-solidifying mixtures, which would be then used for sealing the bottom and the banks of the Górka reservoir. The empty and sealed reservoir would be filled up with a volume of approx. 600000 t of ashes, coming from coal burning in the thermal-electric power station. For the last stage, instead, is scheduled the rehabilitation of the entire waste disposal site in the Górka quarry. The site will be drained, covered with a leveling, sealing and rehabilitating layer, which will allow to introduce plants on the rehabilitated waste site. Much has been written recently about the Henderson Mine Project in Colorado being developed by American Metal Climax, Inc. To briefly recap the project, AMAX has an ore body, containing about 300 million tons of proven and probable molybdenum ore which is located under Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. The mill, however, will be located on the western slope in the Williams Fork Valley where water and space for waste disposal are more available. AMAX will carry the ore by remote controlled trains from a gathering level underground at the mine, through a ten (10) mile tunnel under the Continental Divide and thence along a five (5) mile surface railroad to the mill site. One of the more challenging facets of the project is the western portion of the ten (10) mile tunnel being driven by Dravo Corporation through difficult ground conditions, downgrade, toward the Continental Divide. The tunnel is a 16'-6" wide by 15' high horseshoe, which runs in a straight line and drops at a constant three percent (3%) grade from the West Portal to the ore zone. Dravo's portion is anticipated to be about 6 1/2 miles long and includes permanent pumping stations located every 4,900 linear feet (lf) permanent rectifier stations every 12,5001f, and one (1) 1,560 ventilation shaft. The western portion of the tunnel lies in the Idaho Springs formation, a mixture of gneiss and schist with some granitic intrusions. Toward the Continental Divide a transition into Silver Plume Granite is expected to occur. Preconstruction geologic information indicated the Idaho Springs and Silver Plume formations to be basically competent with some faulted and altered areas. It
