Luminex is a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits based on time-resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultra-violet light source. Developed by Scintrex Ltd., Luminex detects and resolves a group of key minerals - either ore minerals themselves or, more often, accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. These minerals are commonly found on the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits that are remotely detectable from the air. Tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold, and bedded lead-zinc deposits are included. Therefore, Luminex is a natural supplement to the three classical methods of airborne geophysics. The luminescence of minerals has been known and used qualitatively in mineral exploration for many years. But there are more than 500 minerals known to be at least sometimes luminescent. Luminescence of most is unpredictable and the colors they emit may vary from locale to locale. It is, perhaps, this apparent complexity of the field that has discouraged its proper scientific scale until now. There are two basic types of luminescent minerals - intrinsic and impurity activated. In the first type, luminescence is an inherent property of the mineral in its purest form. In the latter, luminescence is due to the introduction of foreign trace elements, often in very modest amounts (ppm), into the crystal lattice. These trace elements are known as activators. There are very few intrinsic luminescent minerals commonly found in nature. Chief among these are the calcium tungstatemolybdate family, more commonly known as the scheelite-powellite family, and the uranyl minerals such as autunite and saleeite. The vast majority of other known fluorescent minerals such as fluorite, hydrozincite, and many calcites, are impurity activated - that is, they will not fluoresce in purest form. In addition to the many minerals likely to luminesce at the earth's surface under ultraviolet excitation, any prospector who has ventured out at night with a mercury lamp will know that much organic matter luminesces - for example lichens and even scorpions. Just as the eye finds difficulty in resolving the luminescence of minerals from that of organic materials, it also has its limitations at sorting out minerals from one another by their luminescent colors. Figure 1 shows, in part, the photoluminescent emission spectra of scheelite, hydrozincite, and autunite. It is clear that there is a considerable similarity in spectrum between scheelite and hydrozincite and a great deal of overlap. In fact, a small amount of molybdenum in the scheelite lattice can almost bring these two spectra into coincidence. On the other hand, the autunite emission spectrum is clearly resolved from the other two. Basis of the Method The right-hand side of Fig. 1 shows the time waveforms of decay of the photoluminescence of the same three minerals. It is apparent that the lifetimes of photoluminescence of scheelite and hydrozincite are radically different and that these two minerals, therefore, may be readily resolved through their emission lifetime characteristics. It is in the realm of time-resolved measurements (lifetime characteristics) that Scintrex has made its major advance in the Luminex method. With the exception of some work by Exxon confined to uranyl minerals, to the best of our knowledge, no systematic scientific investigation has been carried out in the field of time-resolved mineral luminescence studies other than the work of Scintrex. Scintrex's findings are that all organic materials and most commonly activated luminescent minerals have lifetimes shorter than one microsecond. In addition, only a relatively small number of minerals - among them those called key minerals, or certain ore and pathfinder minerals - have lifetimes greater than one micro-second. Scintrex is able to characterize these minerals primarily by their emission lifetimes and secondarily by their emission spectral characteristics. By a combination of these factors a mineral index is arrived at. From that, photoluminescent minerals can be resolved from one another with a high degree of probability. At least two spectral channels and two time channels - of which one can be common - are required to apply this mineral index. Ground System A portable hand-held Luminex analyzer based on a modulated mercury lamp has been used to date in Canada, the US, and Australia. The current production model of this device is the LG-2. It has two spectral channels and two time channels for each spectral channel. Figure 2 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the Texas-Arizona zinc prospect in Arizona. The instrument was set so the channel read was hydrozincite-specific insofar as possible. The mineralization in this prospect is known to be hydrozincite and other zinc secondary minerals in limestone. Figure 3 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the AAA uranium prospect in Nevada. The instrument was set to optimize the uranyl response. For comparative purposes, broadband scintillation counter readings were made on the same stations (also shown in Fig. 3). It is apparent that both the Luminex and the scintillation counter results reflect a near-surface distribution of uranyl minerals. It is interesting that no visible uranyl secondary minerals

Recently, a Maryland bank became the overnight owner of a toxic waste site through a foreclosure. The original property owners had operated a crash and garbage business on the site and obtained loans for their business venture through the bank. In 1980, their son purchased the property from his parents with mortgage monies obtained from the bank. Failing to make his loan payments, the son defaulted on the mortgage. The bank foreclosed on the property and eventually purchased the property at a foreclosure sale. Shortly after the bank's purchase of the site, toxic wastes were found on the property--the result of disposing solid wastes on the site for 10 years. The bank declined responsibility for contaminating the site and consequently for its cleanup. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took corrective actions to clean up the site. EPA then handed the bill to the bank, citing the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980 (more commonly known as "Superfund"). CERCLA imposes liability on the current owners and operators of hazardous waste sites.

Although known primarily for native copper, the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan also has deposits of copper sulfide (chalcocite) ore. A number of small, but rich, deposits are present at relatively shallow depths near the base of a thick, steeply dipping sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Because much of the ore is fracture-controlled, the deposits appear to be ideal candidates for in-situ leaching. Fracture mapping from drill core and borehole logs coupled with borehole packer permeability tests are being applied to evaluate the suitability of the ore for in-situ leaching. A leaching scheme utilizing a bacterial-assisted ferric iron lixiviant is being tested at bench scale. A pilot scale test is being designed to evaluate the system in the field.

Uranium in the IX feed is absorbed on the resin and after exhaustion the barren pulp is directed to tails, Following the uranium exhaustion cycle an eluant solution passes through the resin bed stripping the uranium from the beads, The uranium is precipitated from the clarified pregnant eluant, filtered, dried and packaged for shipment to the AEC, Normally, the ore received at the Mines Development plant is a loosely cemented sandstone containing small quantities of clay and bentonite, The ore is easily crushed and requires only a 1/3 load of rods in the rod mill to reduce the ore to grain size, Very little of the ore is recirculated by the 42" spiral classifier.

Cycles of mine convergence coincide with annual cycles of temperature and humidity in the mine. Laboratory measurements confirm that the presence of moisture reduces rock strength and induces internal rock stress. Findings are used in the design of mine openings.

We have heard a lot during the recession about the mining industry now competing in a world market for sales of such commodities as copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and phosphate. If the US mining industry is to survive, do we not have to reduce direct operating costs to a minimum? How significant is labor cost compared to consumables, electricity, fuel, maintenance, materials, and transportation? Ore grade is ultimately the dominant factor; but can we offset its dominance by improving productivity? Is the US mining industry perhaps only 25-30% as productive as it might be? What prevents the industry from being more productive? Can we retrofit older plants to be more productive or does it take a new plant with the largest equipment available for each unit operation? Present Productivity A copper industry study a few years ago covering 13 US copper concentrators ranging from about 10-45 kt/d (11,000-50,000 stpd) showed that productivity did not vary with capacity above 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). Operating productivity varied significantly, however, from about 180-635 t/d (200-700 stpd) per operating hourly worker in most units, but one operation had 900 kt/d (1,000 stpd). Concentrators with more than 545 t/d (600 stpd) per hourly worker were in the 23 kt/d (25,000 stpd) or more category. Maintenance productivity covered about the same range, but most concentrators were in the 270¬635 t/d (300-700 stpd) per hourly maintenance worker. Again, one company stood well above others by exceeding 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd). Total hourly productivity ranged from 125-280 t/d (140-310 stpd) per hourly worker for most concentrators. The company with the most productive operation, however, was above 455 t/d (500 stpd). Salaried worker productivity for most operations was in the 725 t/d to 1.2 kt/d (800-1,300 stpd) per salaried worker range. The best operation was 2.2 kt/d (2,400 stpd). The end result is, of course, tons per day per total personnel. Most operations fell in the 110-220 t/d (120-240 stpd) range with the best operation at 400 t/d (440 stpd). This is the productivity definition that is most directly related to unit costs. Many of these operations have made some productivity progress

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of south-eastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). The orebody was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANCO), and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco's currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Corporation, and the Province of Manitoba.

INTRODUCTION In 1982 and 1983, as part of the mine design program for a New Brunswick potash mine, series of laboratory tests were conducted on potash and salt samples obtained during the mine exploration program. Concurrently, two rock mechanics monitoring programs were initiated in-situ the short term test at site A, and the long term test at site B (figures 1 and 2). SHORT TERM TEST (FIGURE 1) The purpose of this test was to obtain a quick confirmation of laboratory data and comparison of the rock response to excavation with the data available from Saskatchewan potash mines. Instrumentation in the main drift was installed on Day 4 after excavation, and the pressure cells were pressurized on Day 33. The packer type cells in the east crosscut were pressurized on Day 25. Excavation of the west cross-cut was begun on Day 71. This "mine by" test has provided important information required for calibration of laboratory tests, as will be shown later. The test data recorded are shown in a series of diagrams: a. initial room closures, main drift-figure 3; b. convergence graphs, main drift-figure 4; c. stresses recorded, main drift-figures 5 to 8 and, d. stresses recorded, east crosscut - figure15 Three types of instruments were used in this test. In the main drift. Saskatchewan Research Council water type hydraulic inclusions. encapsulated in potash, were used to measure lateral and vertical stresses. In the east crosscut a home-made packer type hydraulic inclusion was used to record radial stresses. The convergence stations consisted of end-grouted bars of reinforcing steel. LONG TERM TEST (FIGURE 2) The purpose of the long term test was to study the steady-state behaviour of a single opening in potash. Site B was placed in a remote area of the mine, well away from any anticipated early mining activities. To assure homogeneity of rock mass, the site was placed within a 30 meter thick vertical limb of a syncline-shaped ore body contained within a 360 metre thick vertical section of salt rocks. It was excavated mechanically as close as possible to the designed square cross-section for the entire length of the room. The square cross- section was chosen in order to achieve a comparable geometry in vertical and horizontal directions; that is, to eliminate any undesired effects of geometry interaction with lithostratigraphy which might have generated non-homogeneous behaviour. The site was extensively instrumented. As in site A, the convergence stations consisted of end-grouted bars of reinforcing steel. However, in order to avoid any measurement inaccuracies which would be associated with the brittle yield zone in the opening walls, bars were placed to the same depth in opposite sides of the opening. This allowed the convergence measurement to be obtained as the absolute convergence between two points, rather than the convergence of a single point with respect to a potentially unstable reference. For stress measurements the Saskatchewan Research Council cells were placed vertically, laterally and radially. Unfortunately, due to cost considerations, it was decided to use a compacted sand, rather than grout, to encapsulate the cells in the boreholes. Due to the extremely small strain rates, only radial ly placed cells could be adequately pressurized. The rest of the cells did not perform adequately, and are currently being replaced.

The National Steel Pellet Project and the Butler Taconite Project are operated by The Hanna Mining Company in the vicinity of the towns of Keewatin and Nashwauk, on the western Mesabi Range. Production began in 1967, after seven years of exploratory and development diamond drilling and reconnaissance magnetic surveys, Previously, direct shipping hematitegoethite ores and gravity concentrates had been produced in the area from numerous open pits and several underground mines since the start of the century. Total shipments of these oxidized ores amounted to more than 200 million tons, but at the present time such reserves are nearly exhausted, and there are no mining operations in the Keewatin-Nashwauk area except at the two taconite projects. The locations of all of the present taconite operations on the Mesabi Range are shown in Figure 1, extending for a distance of about seventy miles from the Butler plant to the Dunka River area. The Butler and National plants have a combined rated capacity of 4.4 million tons of pellets. Their reserves cover a combined strike length of about eight miles on the Biwabik iron formation. All of the intervals between present taconite operations on the Mesabi are potential sources of additional magnetic taconite; in particular, exploration and economic studies have been carried out by Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the Biwabik area between Aurora and Virginia, and by Pickands Mather and Company in the Hibbing area. However, west of the Henna and Butler holdings, it appears unlikely that magnetic taconite exists in commerical quantities at economic depths due to extensive oxidation of magnetite to hematite.

One function of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is assessing potential economic impacts of federal land withdrawal policies. This often requires performing economic ana1ysls for an area with limited geologic information available. Input to the economic decision process relies heavily on estimates of mine and mill costs for the potential resources in the area being considered. A methodology for performing these cost estimates was needed to address this situation.

Operators depend upon the success of backfilling programs to ensure that mine activities run continuously (Archibald et al, 1993) where backfilling is an integral part of the mining cycle. In order to ensure that the backfill is prepared and delivered to the stope possessing the required engineering properties, as designed, and that the backfilling process is safe, mine operators at all stages of the backfilling system must be adequately trained for their tasks and be aware of how their work affects other backfilling stages, both up- and down-stream of their station. Mine operator training is primarily based on learning on-the-job from experienced supervisors or training personnel. Classroom training and the availability of reference manuals are less common. While in use by many industries for some time now, computer-based training (CBT) is becoming more readily accepted by the mining industry for a wide variety of training. It is not intended to replace on-the-job training, but to augment it. CBT offers many advantages to enhance operator learning by utilizing multimedia presentations, interactions and on-line testing to teach complex concepts and relationships. Discussions with many operations revealed that there is an industry need for a backfill guide for frontline operator training and as a reference manual for operators and mine engineers. Sponsored by the mining industry and the CIM, "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" has been developed by the Departments of Mining Engineering at Queen's University and McGill University to fulfil this need. "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" is an interactive multimedia package that incorporates high quality colour images, animations, sound, and video with text to review the main backfill methods employed in Canada, including hydraulic/slurry, paste and rock fill. The Guide is divided into training and reference primer sections. When in training mode, the operator is guided through a presentation of common mining and backfill practices and technologies so that he/she may become more familiar with different aspects of backfill processes. To ensure that key concepts have been learned during training, the operator will be tested after each section using a series of multiple choice and true/false questions. When in reference mode, alternatively, the operator may browse through the information in a more detailed and independent fashion through a series of interactive menus. The Guide focuses on the following main topics: resources, surface preparation, distribution, stope activities, health and safety, and quality control. Special features included in the Operator's Guide are a Buyer's Guide, a Trouble Shooting Guide, and an interactive glossary of backfill and mining terms. Concepts in interactive and computer-based learning are also reviewed in this paper.

The base of the stone quarry still stands today, as imposing as any Mavan temple or Egyptian pyramid. For 80 years it has been a reminder to those who must sweat to earn a wage. There are no plaques to indicate its impressive history. Rather, it stands as a towering monument to the masons and stone cutters who built it-a testimony in stone to that most demanding and back-breaking of industries. Take your imagination back to the limestone quarries at Split Rock, near Syracuse, NY. The sound of an occasional steam drill and the mighty roar of a dynamite explosion herald progress. The ring and crash of a hundred sledge hammers are music in the calloused hands of the quarry men. It is a symphony of man against nature. Hundreds of sweat-soaked men break up the blue Onondaga limestone for the "sodi ash," the popular name for the quarry owner, the Solvay Process Co. Nearby, expert stone masons fit mammoth 454-kg (1,000-1b) blocks of cut stone into place, building the foundation for what may have been, back in 1902, the world's largest stone crusher. Consider for a moment, a modern stone quarry. The business is now essentially one of machine against nature. The shovels, drills, conveyors, and locomotives help make the quarry of today a profitable venture. Now consider the quarry of the early 20th Century. Anyway you look at it, a tougher, more demanding life would be difficult to imagine-12 hours a day, all kinds of weather, breaking up tons of rock that had been drilled, blasted, or pounded from the bowels of an uncooperative earth. Before proceeding, it might be prudent to briefly describe the history of the Split Rock quarries. Before the purchase of the quarry lands by the fledgling Solvay Process Co. in 1889, the quarries already had a reputation literally chiseled in stone. Most of the municipal buildings in Syracuse were made of it, as well as over half of the Erie Canal, including the engineering marvel of the time, the Montezuma Aqueduct. Industrial minerals are just other rocks, except for the unique characteristics that make them useful in an industrial process. There is not a ready market for this type mineral and one or more uses must be developed to sustain production. The name "olivine" is a generic term used to indicate a group of orthosilicate minerals in a solid solution series, with forsterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4) as endpoints. Since neither is found alone in nature, the mineral is always a combination of the two. The commercial deposits are high in magnesium and on the high end of the melting scale in the series. The name comes from the olive-green color.

Selective placement of toxic mine spoil has been advocated as a means of reducing environmental pollution at the source. However, methods of burial to control environmental damage are not well understood. Using the finite element method, this paper investigates the burial of toxic material within low permeability packages below the water table. The effects of differing package and spoil permeabilities, anisotropy, and infiltration are modeled to provide information about their effect on the flow system. Projection can then be made which will assist in the design of the toxic spoil packages to limit the amount of groundwater flowing through them.

Introduction The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and the Institution of Mining Engineers organized the Third International Mine Ventilation Congress held in Harrogate, England. Sixty-one papers were presented and about 300 participants registered. About 30% of the participants came from Great Britain, 20% from South Africa, and about 5% each came from Australia, Canada, China, France, US, and West Germany. The remainder of the participants came from 18 other countries. Eleven of the papers presented dealt with methane, three with diesel exhausts, four with dust, four with radioactivity, 18 with heat, and 15 dealt with main and auxiliary ventilation. Six of the papers dealt with mine fires, which is a boundary region between main ventilation and gas concerns. Ventilation Congress proceedings are available. See ME, December 1984, page 1687, New Books page. With CH4 and radioactivity topics, the Australians dominated since they are becoming large coal and uranium producers. With diesel exhausts, the most important problem in highly mechanized mines, the North Americans were prominent. The South Africans, working in 90% SiO2 in their gold deposits, were preeminent in presentations on dust. They also led in topics related to heat, joined by the West Germans whose mines are getting deeper. In main and auxiliary ventilation, Great Britain and West Germany provided the majority of contributions. Methane The large number of methods for the precalculation of CH4 liberation in longwall mining all contain three elements: gas content of the coal, gas emitting zone (or influence zone of face), and degree of gas emission. Determination of the gas content, commonly accomplished by taking coal samples, does not pose much difficulty. But this is not the case with the other two factors. Most existing approaches rely on rock mechanics observations. Some only rely on intuition or speculation. The West German coal mines conducted a large research project between 1977 and 1982, in which gas pressures around longwall faces were measured. Gas pressures and gas contents can be related. Therefore, influence zone and degree of gas emission can be determined simultaneously. The precalculation of CH4 liberation in room-and-pillar mining is simpler. Since foot and hanging walls remain essentially intact, gas pressure distribution and gas flow can be calculated using hydraulics equations. A key to these calculations is permeability. A group of Australian researchers reported that the permeabilities of rock under three dimensional stress differs from rock under destressed conditions. This fact was known, but no systematic observations existed. These were provided. Methane drainage has been practiced for more than 40 years. It is used with great success in longwall operations. Some of the West Germans think that methane drainage from the footwall is neglected. Under certain geological conditions, they claim this is as important as drainage from the hanging wall. A research project was presented in support of this claim. Considerable efforts have existed for more than 10 years to use methane drainage in room-and-pillar mining. A paper described the accomplishments of Consolidation Coal Co. Since coal and rock are not fractured as much as in longwall mining, gas transport takes place by the slow diffusion from micropores into the cleats. Then, it is transported by laminar flow along the cleats until a drainage borehole or the mine workings are reached. Boreholes about 300 m (1000 ft) long can reduce the gas content of a band of coal 100-m (330-ft) wide by 50% in one year. A paper from India described methane drainage from gob areas. A French paper reported that especially high methane concentrations can be drained from gob areas if the face ventilation is descensional. Methane buoyancy and ventilating pressures compensate each other, and little air dilution by leakage takes place. Another French paper described a newly developed gas and air velocity monitoring system making use of a microcomputer. Four papers on methane dealt with gas outbursts. Two Australian contributions described the problems encountered with CH,-CO2 mixtures and the attempts to solve them with drainage boreholes having 10 to 20-kPa (1.5 to 3-psi) suction pressures. A Hungarian paper described problems and attempts to reduce the risks of gas outbursts in Hungary. Prediction of gas outbursts in coal seams was the focus of an English paper. Observations show that they are frequent when coal, through its geological past, has become soft and brittle with a resulting increased desorption rate. An instrument for gravimetric de-

INTRODUCTION The Northwestern University Rigid Block Model (NURBM) has been extended to explicitly model dilatant behavior of rock joints. By incorporating dilatancy, the resistance to shear displacement and slip, which previously was limited to simple Coulomb friction, along edge-to- edge contacts is now provided by contact roughness as well as frictional resistance. The explicit formulation is based on concepts presented by Plesha (1985) in which a plasticity-based phenomenological approach was used to model dilatant joint behavior. This approach has been modified to allow for joint closure upon reversal of shear deformation. After presenting a brief description of the new joint constitutive relationship, model behavior will be illustrated with two examples. The first involves a simple two-block model to simulate a cyclic direct shear test of a single joint. The second example involves simulation of a large cavern in a moderately jointed rock mass subjected to cyclic excitation. It will be shown that in- creasing joint roughness increases cavern stability by interlocking of adjacent blocks. JOINT CONSTITUTIVE RELATIONSHIP Within NURBM adjacent two-dimensional rigid blocks interact along their common edge-to-edge contact with contact forces transmitted at the contact midpoint. The contact constitutive relationship was originally restricted to a Coulomb friction yield criterion with no tensile stresses permitted along the smooth contact surfaces. The local coordinate system for any contact is described as shown in Figure 1 with the elastic stresses and displacements related by the linear- elastic constitutive law: [ ] The contact microstructure has been modeled as Patton-type saw-tooth surfaces such as shown in Figure 2. Sliding can be active along the right asperity with angle aR and length lR or along the left asperity with angle a and length lL. In general, aR and aL will difkr as will lR and lL but for purposes of this paper it has been assumed that these angles and lengths are identical. By a simple transformation, the microscopic asperity stresses can be expressed in terms of the macroscopic contact stresses [ ] If Coulomb friction is assumed along the asperity surfaces, the plastic slip condition will be [ ] where µ is the friction coefficient with the convention that compressive stress is negative. When F is negative, the behavior is elastic and when F is zero, slip can ensure. INTRODUCTION Towards the end of the 1890s the attention of a prospector by the name of Thomas Cullinan was drawn to the occurrence of alluvial diamonds east of Pretoria. Persistent prospecting work by Cullinan led to the loca¬tion of the source of these diamonds-a kimberlite pipe on the Elandsfontein farm. Cullinan eventually acquired the property in 1902, and during an extensive evaluation program outlined the largest diamondiferous pipe in South Africa on which the Premier mine was established. Worldwide attention was drawn to this mine in 1905 when the Cullinan diamond, which weighed 3106 carats and is by far the largest gem diamond ever discovered, was recovered. Premier mine operated with varying success until 1932 when the worldwide depression forced it to close. In 1945 the mine was reopened and since then has been a major producer of gem and industrial diamonds. During the early 1950s exploratory drilling revealed that below the 370-m level the pipe had been completely cut off by a younger gabbro sill. This sill has created major mining and metallurgical problems but the existence of vast reserves of high grade ore below it justi¬fied the establishment of virtually a new mine below the sill. Detailed planning of below-the-sill mining is nearing completion and the development of the first mining block (the L1 block) is well advanced. A full discus¬sion of this block follows. GEOLOGY OF PREMIER MINE Pipe Morphology and Country-Rock Geology As can be seen in Fig. 1, Premier mine is an elon¬gated oval shape with a long axis of 900 m on the surface and a short axis of 450 m. The pipe has a surface area of 32 hectares which decreases progres¬sively with increasing depth, so that 500 m below the surface the area is reduced to 22 hectares. The contact between the kimberlite and the surrounding country rock is sharp, with an average angle of dip of 1.48 rad (85°). From the surface down to approximately 350 m, the country rock is a felsite which grades downwards into a norite. In general both rock types are hard and massive, the felsite in particular being poorly jointed. This characteristic combined with other factors results in an extremely stable open pit, and near-vertical side¬walls are currently being maintained. The norite in general is competent but is heavily jointed in some areas resulting in very blocky ground which creates localized tunnel support problems. In the southeastern area below the sill a zone of highly altered and very unstable norite, which has also created localized sup¬port and development difficulties, lies adjacent to the pipe contact. Kimberlite Geology The Premier pipe is a complex multiple intrusion which contains in the region of 15 separate types of kimberlite, most of which are volumetrically insignifi¬cant. On a simplified basis three major types can be identified which correspond to three separate phases of intrusion. They are: Brown Kimberlite: This represents the first phase of intrusion and now occupies the eastern part of the pipe. In plan the brown kimberlite has a crescentric shape resulting from the intrusive relationship with the younger gray kimberlite which lies to the west. The brown kimberlite increases in relative area with increas¬ing depth which is a favorable factor for future mining operations since this kimberlite is the richest area of the mine, having an average grade of 70 carats/ 100 t. Below the sill this rock disintegrates extremely rapidly when exposed to air or water, to form a fine gravel-like material. This characteristic is due to a high montmorilonite clay content. As is common with clay minerals of this type, water can be absorbed into the crystal lattice with a resultant increase in volume which causes the physical decomposition of the rock. The presence of this decomposing kimberlite was a major factor governing the choice of a mining method, as well as development and tunnel support techniques. Gray Kimberlite: This is the most abundant type and represents the second major phase of intrusion. The diamond content is variable depending on the amount of waste rock dilution, and in general the rock is stable and non-decomposing. At the time of formation of Premier, the surface rock type was Waterberg quartzite, a rock formation which has subsequently been removed from this area by erosion. The explosive extrusion of the gray kimberlite caused extensive brecciation of this rock and while the kimberlite was in a mobile state huge masses of quartz¬ite, amounting to tens of millions of tons, slumped into the pipe. This quartzite became concentrated in the central area of the mine and has been a major mining problem throughout the history of Premier since, due to the irregular distribution of the quartzite, effective selective mining has never been possible. The quartzite is therefore extracted with the ore and has a significant dilution effect on the overall grade. Black Kimberlite: In the western part of the pipe a circular, pluglike body of kimberlite is intruded into the gray kimberlite. This plug consists mainly of a hard, dark-colored rock known as black kimberlite, but also contains a number of minor kimberlite variet.ies as well as nonkimberlite carbonate dikes. The Gabbro Sill The sill averages 75 m in thickness and within the confines of the pipe consists of 52 million t of rock. On average the major dip is 0.34 rad (20°) to the northeast which is across the short axis of the pipe, the range of dip being from near horizontal up to 0.52 rad (30°). Due to the pronounced dip, the sill is encount¬ered over a vertical distance of 175 m with the highest upper contacts on the 355-m horizon and the lowest bottom contact on the 530-m horizon.
