"Caterpillar is the largest manufacturer of mining equipment in the world. In hundreds of surface mines around the globe, Caterpillar’s flagship 793 haul trucks can be found moving material for copper, coal, gold, iron ore and other mines. Likewise, its iconic yellow bulldozers are at mine sites the world over — the company recently announced the sale of its 40,000th large dozer. And since its acquisition of Bucyrus in 2011, Caterpillar has positioned itself to become a worldwide leader in the underground mining sector as well.But don’t think that the company is resting on its reputation. As evidence of its commitment to the global mining sector, as well as its confidence in the future of mining, Caterpillar invited mining trade press, including Mining Engineering, to its Tinaja Hills Training Center near Tucson, AZ in November to introduce the latest editions to its mining portfolio. The two-day event focused mostly on the newest electric drive haul trucks, the Cat 796 AC, which will operate in the 326-t (360-st) class, and the 798 AC in the 360 t (400 st) weight class.Caterpillar representatives also spoke about new offerings in the underground space as well as the newest version of the D11 large dozer.“It has been 10 years since we launched the F Series,” Jean Savage, Caterpillar’s vice president, surface mining and technology said. “Since then, we have been on a journey to serve our mining customers and we wanted to have trucks in every application. Today, we are launching two new trucks that will allow us to fill out our portfolio.”While Caterpillar previously offered the broadest range of off-highway haul trucks to the mining industry, it was noticeably absent from the 326-t (360- st) and 360-t (400-st) weight classes."

Conventional barrier pillars in underground coal mines are intended to protect mains and sub-main entries for relatively long periods of time. Inter-panel barrier pillars that may be used in especially deep coal mines, say, below 800 m (2,400 ft), are intended to protect longwall panel faces and adjacent panel entries for the life of nearby panels. Barrier pillar failures have serious consequences, especially when failure is sudden and catastrophic. Design of barrier pillars is thus of considerable importance to safety and efficiency of operations. Locally, failure occurs at the limit to elasticity when stress tends to exceed strength. Strength of rock is stress dependent, so an analysis of stress is central to rational design of barrier pillars. There are several approaches to stress analysis for coal mine pillar design that range from the simplified but popular tributary area method including variations that use empirical definitions of the tributary area (volume) to more sophisticated numerical methods such as the boundary element method and the finite element method. Despite ease of use, empirical methods are limited and always suspect when applied to conditions beyond their scope of definition, while boundary element methods do not generally include pillars in the solution domain. The finite element method is not so restricted and thus is a natural choice for conventional and inter-panel barrier pillar safety analyses. Caving of roof strata certainly affects the distribution of stress about longwall faces and nearby barrier pillars. Conventional wisdom that considers roof strata to respond as cantilever beams indicates the longer the span the greater are loads on longwall faces and face supports. Failure of roof beams, caving, shortens spans and relieves face and support loads. The same view is applicable to barrier pillars in that long roof spans outside of barrier pillars leads to higher pillar loads than short spans. Hence, caving should be beneficial to barrier pillar safety. However, the benefit may be small depending on the extent of caving and only in the form of a slight reduction in overburden weight transmitted to the barrier pillar, especially in case of inter-panel barrier pillars. FINITE ELEMENT MODEL Finite element models for stress analysis in rock mechanics are formulated in consideration of physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. These models meet the essential requirements for equilibrium of stress, satisfy strain displacements relations, and in a general sense, relate stress to strain through material laws, often referred to as constitutive relations. The last may be complex and replete with nonlinearities. A de facto engineering material law is the elastic model in the form of Hooke?s law for linear, homogeneous materials that may be anisotropic. A limit to elasticity is imposed by strength in the form of a failure criterion or yield function that accommodates triaxial stress states. Examples used in rock mechanics are the well-known Mohr-Coulomb (MC)criterion, the popular Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, and the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion. The first is linear in stress, while the second is nonlinear. Both do not include any effect of the intermediate principal stress. The last is also linear in stress but includes the intermediate principal stress. All show an increase in the major principal stress at failure with confining pressure. In the UT2/3 finite element programs, the failure criterion Y is a nonlinear, anisotropic form and is also the plastic potential [1]: [YJI=+ 11NYJI=+- (1) ] where N is an exponent, usually 2, and J2 and I1 are nonlinear anisotropic forms of the second invariant of deviatoric stress and the first invariant of principal stress. The form (1) reduces to DP when N=1and isotropy prevails. When Y = 1, the limit to elasticity is reached and plastic deformation is possible. The material constants that enter (1) are all computed from unconfined compressive, tensile, and, in case of anisotropy, shear strengths. These latter strengths may be estimated from conventional laboratory test data. Of course, joints in field-scale rock masses induce different values. How different is often a matter of conjecture. For comparative studies, laboratory rock properties seem adequate. Inelastic, that is, plastic behavior occurs with strain beyond the elastic limit. Strain hardening, ideal plasticity, and strain softening are possibilities. Ideally brittle behavior with complete loss of strength is an extreme form of strain softening [2]. Caving may also be considered as strain softening with a less drastic reduction of material properties. As intact roof strata fail, fall, and form a rubble pile below, a new material is formed with greatly reduced elastic moduli and strengths, say, 1/100th of the original intact moduli and strengths. From another viewpoint, caving is simply a natural cut and fill process. Input for stress analysis by the finite element method includes: 1. Preexcavation stress state 2. Geology (stratigraphic column) 3. Structure (major faults, joint sets) 4. Elastic moduli 5. Strengths, and specific gravities of each rock type 6. Excavation sequence Output from an analysis includes distributions of: 1. Stress 2. Strain 3. Displacement 4. Local factor of safety (element fs) The last is defined as the ratio of strength to stress and in view of the failure criterion (1), is the ratio [fsJstrengthJstress=] where the numerator is the maximum possible value and the denominator is the actual value of the square root of the second invariant of deviatoric stress. This invariant is a measure of shear stress intensity but also reduces to uniaxial tensile and compressive strengths as the case may be. "Environmental considerations are a key driver within marine mining consenting processes across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. At the individual project level, the environmental effects of any given development project are typically defined within the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). For well-established industries operating in well-studied environments this approach typically works well. However, where emerging industries or existing industries that are operating within new environments are concerned, there may be significant knowledge gaps pertaining to our understanding of how specific anthropogenic practices or activities interact with the marine environment. These knowledge gaps can cause significant uncertainties pertaining to the likely significant effects of a project. Such uncertainties may result in barriers to industry and economic progress, increased consenting risks, increased project costs to be borne by individual project developers through the acquisition of additional environmental data during the pre-consent or post-consent project phases, project delays and/or significant increases in environmental monitoring burdens with corresponding increases in project costs."

"Deep sea mining of polymetallic sulphides will change the physical and chemical conditions at the seafloor by creating scars when sulphides are removed, and potentially also by deposition of mine tailings at the seafloor. These changes will impact the existing ecosystems at the seafloor in and around the mined areas. Seafloor Massive Sulphide deposits that have been exposed to oxic seawater weather into Fe-metal-oxyhydroxides. However, the rates of weathering and release of heavy metals and other toxic compounds to the environment from freshly exposed sulphides in a deep-sea environment are not well studied.During a cruise to the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea in July 2014 we will initiate in-situ experiments investigating the microbiological and geochemical processes involved in the weathering of freshly exposed massive sulphides deposits in a natural environment. This will be done by creating scars in naturally occurring sulphide deposits and by deploying weathering experiments at the seafloor. The sites will be revisited and re-sampled in 2015. The mobility and fate of heavy metals will be one of the main concerns of the study as well as constraining the time it will take for exposed sulphides to return to the chemical state present prior to mining. In this presentation we will present the experimental framework and the preliminary results from the July 2014 cruise. This project is part of the EU funded MIDAS (Managing impacts of deep sea resource exploitation) project."

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries and is often used to improve organisational safety. This study was undertaken to examine the content of past incident investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of five elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of three Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

Dolomite impurities are increasing in the currently mined phosphate deposits in Florida. Several research efforts have been conducted in various laboratories around the globe to find methods to economically removing the dolomite. However, a universal and cost-effective process is not now in commercial use. In this paper, a new process for dolomite/apatite separation is presented. The differential solubility of dolomite in slightly acidic solution is utilized to generate micro CO2 bubbles at the dolomite/water interface. Particle (dolomite)/bubble aggregates float to the surface leaving phosphate concentrate with low MgO content. Interestingly, up to 6.0 mm particles can be floated by such micro-bubble/particle aggregates. Different surface-active agents were tested to stabilize the bubbles. Results of these tests are presented, and the mechanisms involved are discussed.

Todays End of Life vehicles are shredded and their metal components recovered and recycled by standard methods. The remaining non-metallic fraction is shredder residue, and contains vast amounts of high value engineering plastics. None are today recovered. Discussed are the developmental approaches used in the first process to recover these valuable plastics. Examined are initial laboratory studies, pilot plant design and construction, product development, results, and flowchart explanations.

Every two years, industry leaders and practitioners of tunneling and underground construction gather at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) to learn from their peers about the most recent advances and breakthroughs in this unique fleld. Industry experts from around the world highlight their most recent projects and share real-world experiences. They also share with their colleagues new technologies and methodologies that attendees can take home to their respective projects. The 2013 RETC was held June 23-26 in Washing-ton, D.C., itself home to several major tunneling and underground construction projects. The conference is sponsored by SME. Attendance was 1,384 professionals. The accompanying exhibit hosted 159 companies in 188 booths. A few of the topics covered in the technical sessions dealt with caverns and large spans, contracting practices, tunnel linings, design and planning, geotechnical considerations and instrumentation. The conference was preceded by four short courses, all well attended. They were ?Grouting in Underground Construction,? ?Tunnel Lining Design,? ?Microtunneling Application? and ?Risk, Uncertainty and Hard Decisions.? In addition, a sold-out field trip to D.C. Water?s Blue Plains Tunnel took place following the conference. The Blue Plains Tunnel is part of the agency?s Clean Rivers Project. Also during the meeting, three students each received $5,000 scholarships from the UCA of SME, while another three students each received $2,500 scholarships from RETC (See page 53).

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ(or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m).processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

Attractive geology does not guarantee mining investment if a region’s policies are bad, according to mining executives surveyed in the Fraser Institute’s seventh Annual Survey of Mining Companies. Companies responsible for a combined US$642.4 million in international exploration (during 2002) rated the policy attractiveness and mineral attractiveness of mining jurisdictions around the world. Jurisdictions like Chile, Australia, Quebec and Nevada bolster their attractive geology with mining-friendly policies, the report said. These locations do well on the overall investment attractiveness index. On the other hand, jurisdictions like British Columbia and Indonesia, each with excellent geology, are hurt by their policies, which have lowered their score.

This paper investigates the use of backfill zones and yielding pillars for subsidence control. The investigation begins by choosing an appropriate subsidence predictive technique to simulate the proposed subsidence-control schemes. Two case studies are performed in order to delineate the accuracy and utlility of the chosen predictive technique and then the results of these case studies are used to establish appropriate sets of regional site parameters. Next, a detailed analysis of the major variables affecting the outcome of the subsidence-control simulations is conducted and graphical displays of the exact sensitivity of the surface subsidence to these variables are given. Finally, alterations to the surface subsidence that are expected from using two major subsidence-control techniques are presented. The first technique to be assessed is a backfilled pillar centered longitudinally in a panel. With this arrangement, a minimal amount of backfill material can produce substantial decreases in vertical displacements. The second technique to be assessed is the use of yielding gate pillars to reduce the sinuosity of the transverse subsidence over adjacent panels. With proper design, this technique can greatly curtail surface strains and help minimize remedial drainage control.

Tracer gases are an effective method for assessment of mine ventilation systems, but their dispersion characteristics can differ substantially as ventilation parameters, such as flow path and velocity, vary. This research utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model a simplified full scale model mine, details a sensitivity study examining mesh size for an underground coal mine simulation, and examines gas dispersion parameters to determine the optimal model methods for simulation of tracer gases in underground coal mines. These models can be used to determine how a given tracer gas profile might be generated in a mine or areas of a mine that are not accessible, for example, immediately following a mine disaster. Accurate simulation scenarios can allow for the remote determination of the status of the ventilation network, but the sensitivity of the simulation at mine scale must be carefully examined.

We look at the empirical evidence of coal block auctions in India to understand how competitive intensity affects the bid amounts in common value auctions. The results suggest that competitive intensity measured through the number of bidders for a coal block is instrumental in determining the bidding outcomes. The presence of higher numbers of bidders in the auction leads to higher bids - every additional bidder causes the bid amount to rise by INR 142.67 per tonne of coal for auctions studied for 127 coal blocks from 2014 to 2023. The paper also examines the moderating and mediating effect of competition on bids and on excess of bids from the comparative market price of coal from alternative source of Coal India Limited. The results indicate that competitive intensity does not have statistically significant impact on the relationship between common value of coal blocks and bids, neither as a moderator nor as a mediator. The strategic behavior of the bidders has also been observed as bidders have been seen to bid in a higher than market price in order to outbid the competitors.

INTRODUCTION The control of nuisance water in a mine is extremely important; left uncontrolled, nuisance water can have a severe effect on haulage, ventilation, production, and the health and safety of miners. To control water in mines, a four-step process is followed: (1) prevention, (2) collection, (3) transportation, and (4) treatment. This chapter will be devoted to the collection and transportation of mine water because prevention is usually dictated by pre-mining conditions and initial planning, while treatment is variable and highly site specific. A mine drainage system is nothing more than a collection of gathering points (sumps), machines that impart energy to the fluid (pumps), transportation ducts (pipes), and control devices (fittings, valves, etc.). A pump does not pull the fluid up the suction pipe; atmospheric or external pressure pushes the liquid up the suction pipe to the pump. All references in this chapter will be to centrifugal pumps, due to their popularity for mine drainage. PUMP CHARACTERISTIC CURVES The performance of a pump is plotted on a graph as an indication of its characteristic. To develop the data points, a test facility similar to that shown in Fig. 1 is established. The calibrated Venturi meter is used to measure quantity, the Bourdon gage measures pressure, and the wattmeter measures power input. Various discharge pressures are obtained by throttling with a gate valve in the discharge pipe. Quantity and power are measured at each of these pressure levels, giving the necessary data for plotting the characteristic curves. Fig. 2 shows a typical characteristic curve for a centrifugal pump. Notice that pressure is measured as so many feet of vertical water column above the outlet level, or head. Knowing the quantity (in gallons per minute), head (in feet), and power input (brake horsepower), the pump's efficiency can be plotted based upon the following relationship:

"Underwater hydrothermal vents are known since the 1970s and their importance for the global economy is growing as new discoveries and new assessments are made each year (Cherkashov et al., 2010; Corliss et al., 1979). The similarities of seafloor massive sulfides, representing the younger versions of the well exploited on land volcanogenic massive sulfides, bring an increased awareness to the potential of the sea (Ajan G. Galley, 2007; Hannington et al., 2011; Herzig and Hannington, 1995). The Arctic Ocean presents itself as an opportunity to study new interest areas and numerous hydrothermal systems (active and inactive) were discovered along the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge (AMOR) (Pedersen et al., 2010b). The Mohns ridge is an ultraslow spreading ridge of the AMOR (Vogt, 1986) where two hydrothermal vent sites were recently discovered, the Jan Mayen and the Loki’s Castle (Pedersen et al., 2010a; Pedersen et al., 2009; Pedersen, 2005). Here we compare these two Arctic hydrothermal systems, which represent two well-differentiated end-members of hydrothermal fields in the region."

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard rock and mixed face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM over fifty years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates higher and cutter costs lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. This paper describes recent improvements in disc cutter components including cutter ring materials and processing, as well as improvements in lubricants, bearings, seals and cutter condition monitoring. These developments have resulted in more reliable cutters capable of operating in a wide range of geological conditions. Ultimately these improvements result in a better value for both contractors and project owners.

Booster fans, large underground fans, can increase the volumetric efficiency of ventilation systems by helping to balance the pressure and quantity distribution throughout a mine, reducing leakage and reducing the total power requirement. However, in ventilation systems that use booster fans there is a potential for system recirculation, the leakage of return air to intake air, and also for localized recirculation near the fan through the bulkhead and airlock doors. Air that is recirculated locally decreases the system efficiency because the quantity of air flow through the fan increases without increasing the airflow throughout the system. To understand the detailed flow characteristics of a ventilation system with a booster fan, two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed using the software Ansys-FLUENT. Though two-dimensional models do not represent the full complexity of the flow dynamics, they do provide a good representation of the flow characteristics and they allow for a qualitative analysis of how the flow dynamics are affected by the system characteristics. The CFD models were used to evaluate how the number of booster fans, the booster fan placement, the location and geometry of the fan installation and the construction of the airlock system affect the flow characteristics and the localized efficiency of the ventilation system.
