Laboratory measurements by the Bureau of Mines indicate that failure in dry rock specimens measuring approximately 13 cm in length is preceded by tilt anomalies lasting a few milliseconds. The tilt behavior is qualitatively similar to that reported to precede earthquakes. Test results suggest that the time duration of this tilt anomaly for laboratory specimens of this length is independent of rock type, in agreement with theoretical predictions and other experimental data on rock failures including earthquakes.

Several experimental programs were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Center to investigate the level of mine fire detection and alarm capability possible using state-of-the-art technology. These programs involved comparison of the response and alarm time of optical and ionization type smoke sensors to smoldering and flaming coal combustion in a smoke chamber. Coal combustion experiments conducted in the smoke chamber demonstrated that a CO concentration of 5 ppm above ambient corresponded to an optical density of 0.022m1. For the four smoke sensors for which a continuous analog signal was available, a smoke sensor alarm was defined as the average background signal plus ten times the peak-to-peak noise. This alarm criterion resulted in the association of the alarm for three of the four sensors with a smoke optical density of 0.022m-1. and 0.033m-1 for the fourth smoke sensor. The smoke sensors used in the smoke chamber studies were incorporated into large scale diesel fuel fire experiments conducted under normal ventilation conditions in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the Pittsburgh Research Center. These experiments showed that a diffusion mode smoke sensor alarmed earlier than a diffusion mode CO sensor; and, based upon the measurement of the optical transmission at the location of a pump mode ionization type smoke sensor that a pump mode ionization smoke sensor alarmed at an average smoke optical density of 0.021m" for the twelve experiments conducted. A series of 30 and 330 kW diesel fuel fire intensity experiments were conducted under zero airflow conditions in the SRCM. It was determined that :(I) thermal sensors are inadequate at 30 m from a 300 kW fire;(2) a diffusion mode ionization smoke sensor can be more effective for mine fire detection than a diffusion mode CO sensor;(3) recommendations can be made for sensor spacing in a mine entry based upon the measured CO buoyancy induced spread rates along the mine roof and the time for a developing coal fire to ignite a conveyor belt.

This is one of a series of circulars dealing with mining methods, practices, and costs. It describes the method of sinking a shaft 60 inches in diameter with a shot drill, as employed at the Idaho Maryland mine, Grass Valley, Calif. The operation involved a great deal of experimentation in applying the shot-drill method to large bore drilling, overcoming mechanical and other difficulties which developed during sinking, and developing operating technique. Under such circumstances, costs are obviously higher than they would be after the pioneer work has been done, but even so, these actually obtained compare favorably with costs of sinking by more conventional methods. "INTRODUCTIONThe primary function of the lung, i.e. gas exchange, occurs in peripheral units termed alveoli• Diagnosis of lung dysfunction ls therefore dependent on techniques to evaluate the status of the peripheral airways. Since these airways and alveoli are very small, it is difficult to determine directly how they function or how the function is changing due to disease. Yet this unde1·standing is critical to the design of instrumentation to detect early changes in lung function due to disease.An interesting hypothesis describing one aspect of small airway function has been proposed by Frazer (1) as gas trapping due to the formation of menisci in the airways. An additional study (2) proposes that the breaking and possibly the formation of these menisci could generate lung sounds, i.e. crackles. These lung sounds were recorded by placing a microphone at the trachea of an excised rat lung. The lung was degassed and then inflated and deflated. At points along the path of inflation, lung sounds were recorded. However, determination of the origin of the sounds was not attempted due to the difficulties induced by contacting the lung st1rface with a microphone.The purpose of this paper is to describe a non-contacting, whole field technique to monitor and describe the movements of the lung surface during inflation - deflation cycles.HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRYHolographic interferometry is a full field, non-contacting and non-destructive technique that measures deformations of an object with a sensitivity in the order of the wavelength of light. A laser beam is split, with one beam reflected from an object and the other used as a reference beam. Both beams combine to produce a hologram of the object on a photographic plate. The process utilizes the concepts of interference, i.e. the two wave amplitudes will add at the points where the difference in optical path lengths over the exposure period is zero or a whole number of wavelengths and will subtract at other points."

Cost Data Library The data retained in the Cost Data Library is of a semi¬permanent nature in that it is held in storage for immediate use with the program although its contents may require periodic evaluation to maintain it in a current status. The library is composed of six arrays containing both technical and cost data. The following description of the library input system provides the information necessary to maintain an active storage file. Array POWERA: FORMAT (8F10.0) - contains the step groupings of the power rate schedule for power cost computations. Four input data cards are required to fill this storage area. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation, and the U.S. Geological Survey did a geological appraisal of an east portion of the Bear-Marshall-Scapegoat-Swan (BMSS) RARE II area (No. A1485) to provide mineral resource information for land use planning. The Bureau of Mines' investigation consisted of a library and field search for all mineral properties and occurrences, and included a review of Teton County mining claim records. Those records showed two placer claims, the only mining-related activity known in the area. Six reconnaissance pan samples were taken in the vicinity of the two placer claims, the Lone Star and Spotted Horse, located on Hannan Gulch in 1900 and 1901. One sample contained a trace of gold, but there are no identified resources. However, the study area is in the Rocky Mountain Overthrust Belt, which is productive for oil and gas elsewhere. The entire study area is blanketed by oil and gas leases and is currently being explored.

"""Hazard"" is the general expression used by safety engineers to denote risk, or the danger to property or human beings from the contingencies peculiar to different industries. Where a business, family, or individual is subjected to possible financial loss from any particular hazard, it is customary and is considered good practice to insure for reimbursement of possible loss. Accordingly, we take out insurance for earthquakes, for fire, for accidents, etc., and are charged a different premium for each. The premium rate is based on our relative exposure to the hazard in comparison to the total loss to our particular class of business in our geographical location over a given period.Insurance, then, must be considered as the experience of a group rather than of an individual, and any individual may be fortunate or unfortunate over stated periods. Through the law of averages, the probability of loss because of exposure to hazard is becoming more accurately measured as experience is accumulated and data are analyzed.Lion human life came to have a financial value in the eyes of the law, and employers were held liable for losses through accidents to employees while on duty, insurance companies began to underwrite the accident risks of the different employers and divided them into classes based on the amount of risk involved. Premiums for compensation insurance are based on relative exposure, which is measured by pay roll. The premium is rated in proportion to the severity of losses established by statistical studies.' It soon became evident that the accident experience of employers in the some industry varied widely; that is, there were good and bad risked in the same line of business. This resulted in ""experience rating"" of premiums, meaning thereby that an employer with experience in accident cost was premium rated in proportion to his losses over a stated period (usually three or more years)."

Identifying the properties of overlying rocks in underground mining operations is important to ensure the appropriate roof support design is used to maintain stability of the mine entries. Recently J. H. Fletcher & Co. developed a monitoring and control system for roof bolters for the underground mining industry. The system records the drilling parameters used during roof bolt drilling and the information can provide insight into the physical properties of the roof strata. The parameters include thrust, rotational speed, torque and velocity and the measurements are collected every 0.1 second during the operation. The drilling parameters were analyzed to determine the application of identifying the strength of rocks being drilled from the measurements. The data was converted into the specific energy of drilling which is a measure of the amount of energy required for removing a given unit of rock during a drilling operation. The laboratory studies completed to date indicate a fairly high correlation between the specific energy of drilling and the unconfined compressive strength of :he rocks that were drilled. Additionally, the drilling parameters were shown to be effective for identifying the presence of fractures or bed separations between rock layers. The thrust, torque and specific energy of drilling were all good indicators for identifying the fractures or separations. Regardless of the drilling parameters used during the drilling experiments, the location of the fractures were identified. In order to determine the application of the drilling parameters for identifying roof rock properties, two series of experiments were conducted. The first series of experiments used three "manufactured" roof layers that had various rock samples embedded in concrete blocks. The rock samples included three types of sandstone, marble, and argillite. Another concrete block was poured with foam inserts to simulate large bedding separations (2 to 8-in). Two other manufactured blocks were constructed using high-strength concrete with cardboard layers embedded to simulate smaller fractures or bedding separations. The size of the cardboard layers varied from 1/8- to 1-in thick. One of the blocks had the cardboard layers embedded at an inclined angle to determine the effect of the orientation on the drilling parameters. A series of experiments was conducted with the rotational speed and the penetration rate held constant and the thrust and torque allowed to vary. The information collected from the experiments is used to determine the application of the drilling parameter measurements for identifying rock properties, fractures and bedding separations.

This chapter presents data on occupational exposures from several sources. Data from compliance samples obtained by MSHA inspectors are presented in table 6-1 for coal mine dust and silica dust, and in tables 6-2 through 6-6 for metal fumes. Since these samples were taken for compliance monitoring rather than as part of a survey of the industry, it is difficult to predict how well they indicate actual exposures for all mining operations. In the coal industry, 7.8% of all respirable dust samples during 1986-1995 were above the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Of silica dust samples obtained during the 10-year period, 23.7% were above the PEL in coal, 16% in metal, 10.8% in nonmetal, 9.1% in stone, and 7.6% in sand and gravel. Of metal fume samples, silver samples showed the largest percentage above the PEL-approximately 48% of samples in both metal and nonmetal. Tables 6-7 and 6-8 present data on noise exposures from the MSHA "dual threshold" survey, which was published in the Federal Register [61 Fed. Reg. 66347 (1996)] as part of a proposed rule change for occupational noise exposure in mining. This study examined a group of samples obtained during 1991-1995 and compared the percent of samples that were above two separate specified limits. The first limit was the current noise standard, a time-weighted average of 90 dBA, calculated to include only exposures at 90 dBA and above. The second limit was a time-weighted average of 85 dBA, calculated to include exposures at 80 dBA and above. Tables 6-8 and 6-9 refer to musculoskeletal overload conditions examined in the National Occupational Health Survey of Mining (NOHSM) [NIOSH 1996]. Table 6-8 shows the operational definitions for each condition; table 6-9 shows the percentage of the workforce potentially exposed, by commodity. Across all commodities, a large proportion of workers were exposed to musculoskeletal overloads due to positioning of the neck and back; positioning and motion of the forearms, arms, and shoulders; heavy lifting; and positioning and movement of the lower limbs. The recorded overloads were defined in the survey and did not exceed any NIOSH, MSHA, or OSHA guidelines for musculoskeletal overloads. Further information on this survey appears in appendix A.

The Bureau of Mines has been carrying on an extensive diamond- drilling program during the past 7 years on deposits of strategic and critical minerals . Often the project reports and the drill-hole logs describe the findings only in terms of the mineral being sought at the time . Then , too , results may not always be interpreted alike by several mining engineers , and the cores therefore provide a permanent tangible record to complement the project reports . The cores from projects in the eastern divisions are being stored at the Mount Weather Testing Adit . Core from a representative hole ( or skeletonized sections from several holes , if these are more representative ) is selected at each project and shipped to Mount Weather for permanent storage . At the Testing Adit an underground room was prepared and storage racks were installed . Wooden core trays designed to accommodate cores of various sizes were purchased .

A mineral survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984 identified no mineral resources or prospects with mineral development potential in the Pit River Canyon Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Basalt suitable for aggregate and fill is in the WSA but rock of this nature is abundant in the region and closer to potential markets.

This paper is one of a series giving the results of metallurgical tests conducted by: the Alaska station of the Federal Bureau of Iſines, on the recovery of gold from the black sands of placer clean-ups. The data given in this report were obtained from tests on a lot of black sand from a property located on St. Patrick Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska. This property comprises the Sagan Fraction and adjoining bench claims, and is being operated by J. A. Lillie. The sand ad already been treated at the mine by amalgamation. A sample taken by Mr. Lillie and assayed at the station showed that the gold still remain ing amounted to ll cents per pound. As this gold content was sufficiently high to justify further treatment of the same, 770 pounds were shipped to the station for testing. The reader will note that the gold content is given in cents per pouni, rather than per ton. This is in conformity with practice in the district in valuing black sands, as the quantity obtained at any one time is small, much less than one ton. . The sand consisted principally of schist and quartz, with very little ilmenite and garnet; and no magnetite or sulphides. Most of the gold present as contaminated with quartz, as the free particles of gold had been removed by amalgamation at the mine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines was established in1910 to reduce .the high accident rate in the nation's coalmines. For 85 years, it conducted a wide variety of tasks related to mining before it was abolished in 1995. The BOM had many technology transfer successes in its lifetime, including more than a dozen "R&D100" awards. This essay identifies and discusses five "transfer factors" that can explain the success (or failure) of many Bureau of Mines projects. These five factors are termed "pressure, pitfalls, path, price, and profit."

"The investigation discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain fundamental data on crushing and grinding and has been confined, so far, to work on quartz.The results of crushing or grinding have hitherto been judged entirely by the amount of the various-sized particles produced, based. on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns - a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished.There was a distinct need of a ""yardstick"" for the measurement of crushed material. It appeared that no advance in the fundamental investigation of crushing and grinding could be made without a reliable method of surface measurement and that such a measurement would have to be based on some property of the surface of the crushed material.A number of attempts based on various surface actions, such as adsorption and heat of wetting, were made to measure surface on quartz particles, but all gave unsatisfactory results. After some preliminary work it was decided that a dissolution method based on Wenzel's law-- ""the reaction velocity between solids and liquids is proportional to the area. of contact""4 -- would be the most feasible.Early use of the dissolution method had been made for surface measurements5, and lately Dr. Geoffrey Martin and his coworkers in England used the dissolution method to determine surface on quartz. They compared the amount of quartz dissolved from a sample in one hour by a hydrofluoric acid solution, with the amountdissolved from a measured quartz cuboid6,After investigating the solvent power of sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, and hydrofluoric acid for quartz, hydrofluoric acid was selected as the most suitable solvent, and a dissolution method was developed which gives very reliable results.During the dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid, the reaction velocity changes for two reasons: there is a change in concentration of solution, and a change of surface of the solid. The amount of quartz dissolved in a definite period of time is therefore not a true measure of surface. If, however, the reaction velocity or rate of dissolution for various periods of time be plotted, a curve will be obtained which, if extrapolated to the zero time ordinate, will give the rate of dissolution before any change of surface or any change in the solvent has taken place, and which is a true index of surface. This rate of dissolution, expressed in percentage of the original sample at the zero time ordinate, is designated herein as the ""Initial Rate"" or as simply ""I. R."""

The Bureau of lines as repeatedly called attention to dangerous practices in the transportation and opening of kogs of black blasting powder. In 1914 Diwin Higgins (Prevention of Accidents from Explosives in Metal inos, Miners' Circular 19, Bureau of Mines, p. 15) stated "canisters should always be opened by removing the bung. To use a pick or other sharp tool for cutting a hole in the canister is dangerous. After the necessary amount of powder has boon taken out, the canister should be kept closed. The powdor should always be handled at a safe distance from an open light." In 1919, Geo. S. Rice (onthly Statement of Coal line Fatalities for June, 1919, Bureau of Mines, pp. 16 to 18) calls attention to the dangers that arise in underground transportation and handling of explosives, and calls special attmtion to the danger of hauling explosives in motor trips; the unnecessary risk involved in hauling men on the trip at the same time, and the necessity of keeping open lights away from black blasting powder. In 1919 the writer (Sensitiveness of Explosives to Frictional Impact, Tech. Paper 234, Bureau of Mines, pp. 13, 15) called attention to the fact that black blasting powder is not as sensitive to frictional impact as the nitro-glycerin dynamites and the gelatin dynamites. Black powder may be ignited by direct impact and the writer believes that this may occur without presupposing a preliminary spark. It is well known, however, that black blasting powder is very sensitive to ignition by spark flame, or heated materials, and these may be produced by an electric current, by an open light, by incandescent particles from a pipe, cigar, or cigarette, by the tearing of metal sheets or scraping of metal against metal, and possibly, by other means. -- The above discussion will serve to introduce a newly recognized hazard the ignition of black blasting powder by the forcible opening of kegs with wodden tools. The details of three accidents in which kegs of black blasting powder ex- ploded instantly when a wooden tool was driven forcibly through the top of the kegs are as follows: 1. In 1915, a powder man employed by a coal mining company stated that he was opening a 25-pound log of black blasting powder by driving a hole in the top with a wooden sprag when the powder in the leg ho was opening ignitod. This caused the ignition of fifty-two additional 25-pound logs of the powder, and the fatal burning of this and another powder man. The ono making this statement lived five hours after the explosion.

Low-temperature heat capacities of chiolite (Na5Al3F14) were determined by adiabatic calorimetry in the temperature range 5.8 to 300 K. The derived standard entropy (S°, 298.15) was 115.6 ± 0.2 cal/deg-mole. High temperature enthalpies relative to 298.15 K were obtained by precision drop calorimetry up to 1,000 K. Tables of experimental data and related thermodynamic functions are given for the temperature range of experimental observations.

Pulmonary inflammation is accompanied by increased microvascular permeability and leakage of plasma into alveolar spaces. Serum has been shown to affect superoxide (O2-) production from pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) in vitro, and in some cases serum has been shown to be necessary for stimulation of PAM. An electro-optical method was used to measure O2- production from single PAM by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from videorecorded images of individual cells. PAM were stimulated by their initial attachment to culture dishes independent of serum. The addition of 2% serum to the culture medium increased NBTH2 production during attachment, whereas concentrations of 5 and 10% serum had no additional effect. In contrast, PAM incubated for 2 hrs could not be stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or zymosan particles to produce O2- unless serum was present during the incubation and/or stimulation; however, NBTH production was similar in all cases of serum addition. Also2, serum alone did not stimulate adherent PAM indicating that serum is necessary but not sufficient for stimulation of attached. PAM. These results suggest that changes in microcirculatory permeability may have a pronounced effect on superoxide production by PAM and that serum may help regulate or condition these cells during inflammation of the lung. Exports of crude oil and its products accounted for 62% of the country's export earnings in 1985. Ecuador's major mineral commodities produced and exported were cement, gold, limestone, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, natural gasoline, crude petroleum and condensate, raw steel, semimanufactured steel products, and sulfur.

Tunnel-driving is recognized as a hazardous occupation; adequate support of roof and sides for preventing accidents from falling material is usually one of the most important safety problems. Where extraordinary conditions of sand and water are found, this problem becomes even more difficult. Tunneling at the Tioga No.2 mine was stopped when a 22-foot bed of water-saturated, fine gray sand was encountered. The tunnel, designed to house an ore-conveyor belt, was being driven from both ends. Driving was extremely difficult at both the upper and lower faces when the sand horizon was reached. A distance of 178 feet remained between the faces. Heavy pressures deformed the steel-supporting rings at the upper face, and there was an inrush of mud and sand at the lower face.
