The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian tribe in the United States and occupies a reservation encompassing about 16 million acres in northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico, with three satellite reservations in western and west-central New Mexico. Coal mining is conducted on a commercial scale at four large surface mines: two are in northeastern Arizona and the other two are in western and northwestern New Mexico. The principal coal-bearing region in Arizona is the Black Mesa coal field, which underlies about 3,200 square miles in the northeastern part of the state. The Black Mesa coal field lies within the boundaries of the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations and makes a significant contribution to the economies of both tribes. Coal reserves in this field are estimated to be 352 million tons, less than one-tenth of one percent of U.S. coal reserves. This coal was first mined by prehistoric Indians as fuel for cooking and heating. It has been estimated that the Indians removed more than 100,000 tons between 1300 and 1600 A.D. The coal-bearing region of the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico is located in the San Juan Basin. The Navajo Mine, which supplies coal for the Four Comers Power Plant, is located in this area. The Office of Surface Mining's Albuquerque, New Mexico, Field Office is responsible for regulating mining and reclamation on Navajo land. The Navajo Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved May 16,1988.

While the statistical summary focuses on 1991 data, this update and outlook section draws on information available to the author as of the date of final preparation in early 1993. For all the press notoriety associated with the shift in the Near East crisis from the defensive posture of Desert Shield to the restoration of Kuwaiti sovereignty through Desert Storm, this was not the dominant event governing global economic thinking in 1991 and the first half and more of 1992. From the global perspective, the momentous political changes in the area that was the U.S.S.R. and in the smaller emerging transitional economy states of Eastern Europe will have even greater current and long-lasting effects on world mineral industry activities than the crisis in the Near East.

"INTRODUCTION This circular contains the story of a stubborn mine fire of electrical origin that started on the main haulage road of No. 59 mine of the Peabody Coal Co. and illustrates that sometimes serious fires can be fought by direct attack. The story also points out that the cost of such procedure can be extremely high, and it is better, therefore, to minimize the possibility of a fire of electrical origin by suitable over-current and line-fault protection. The lives of 163 men were saved by utilizing a recently sunk air shaft near active workings as an escapeway. These men could not have reached the older openings. Also described are the rescue of 75 additional men through another air shaft, sealing of the fire, attempted extin¬guishment with carbon dioxide, and the difficulties of fighting the fire and recovering the mine.A fire occurred shortly before 12 o'clock noon, August 15, 1949, in the No. 59 mine, Peabody Coal Co., Springfield, Ill. All 257 men underground escaped to the surface. One group of 75 men was delayed from escaping for several hours after the alarm was given because smoke and fire gases were circulating in a main return airway, which intervened between their working section and one air shaft, and also in the stairway compartment of the shaft. After being supplied with universal-type gas masks, or self-rescuers, these men were conducted from the mine by members of a State mine-rescue team and other mine employees. Six nine officials were hospitalized because of exposure to carbon monoxide during fire-fighting activities; all were discharged a few days afterward. Later, while doing work incident to fighting the fire, two men were killed, and several were injured by falls of roof and rib.The fire broke out after a collision of a loaded trip with four empty mine cars on the main east haulage entry. The mine cars were jammed against the trolley wire causing a sustained electric arc that ignited the wooden mine cars and the fire spread to the timbers and coal."

A Bureau of Mines method for recovering nickel, cobalt, and copper from low-grade domestic laterites is described, which includes the unit operations of solvent extraction and electrowinning. Previous Bureau work indicated that addition of Na2S04 (sodium sulfate) to the nickel electrolyte improved current efficiency in nickel electrowinning. The present study determines the compatibility of Na2S04 with nickel strip-ping in the solvent extraction operation of the Bureau method. The effect of adding 100 g/l Na2S04 on nickel stripping, phase disengagement, and pH was determined in comparative laboratory-scale tests. In continuous-circuit testing, Na2S04 reduced stripping efficiency to the extent that five, instead of four, strip stages were required for complete stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent. In tests made in a phase-disengagement cell that had a variable settler area, the addition of Na2S04 did not significantly affect phase separation characteristics. The pH of the nickel electrolyte in the temperature range of 20° to 65° C was also unaffected by the addition of Na2S04. An economic evaluation showed that the energy saved by adding Na2S04 to the electrolyte would more than offset the cost of adding another stripping stage.

As part of the development of processes for producing synthetic fuels from coal, the Bureau of Mines prepared a special jet fuel in a pilot plant for evaluation by the Air Force. This jet fuel had all the required physical properties, including the important specifications of high heating value and high density. However, the finished fuel did not pass the stability test specified by the Air Force and conducted by the Southwest Research Institute in a high-temperature research coker. The cause for this instability is being investigated because pure compounds of the type identified in this fuel are known to be stable. The tar acid oil used was a 230° to 300° C. fraction of low-temperature tar obtained by carbonization of a West Virginia bituminous coal in the pilot plant of the Consolidation Coal Co. Both the desulfurization at 400° C. and saturation at 300" C. were done in the vapor phase at 2,500 p.s.i.g. After catalytic treatment and distillation the final jet fuel had a boiling range of 194° to 247° C., a net heating value of 18,420 B.t.u./lb. and a specific gravity of 0.8463 60° F./60° F. It also had u pour point below -62° C., and at 0° C. its viscosity was 4.5 cs. The oil was virtually all bicyclic, 41 pct. noncondensed and 56 pct. condensed.

Bureau of Mines research on the production of phthalic anhydride by vapor phase oxidation of hydrocarbons began at Morgantown, W. Va., in October 1960. For these preliminary studies, a known solution containing naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene was used. In another series of tests, pure naphthalene was dissolved in different solvents. A series of investigations was conducted with the neutral oil fraction (210° to 270° C) of a low-temperature tar obtained from the Texas Power and Light Company's low-temperature carbonization unit. The neutral oil fraction was first dealkylated, and then the product was distilled into 210° to 250° C and 250° to 270° C fractions. These two fractions were then subjected to catalytic vapor phase oxidation. Although a number of catalysts was tested, most of the experiments were made using 9 percent vanadium pentoxide on inert alumina. The activity of this catalyst did not decrease after 162 hours at 1,030° F. Studies were conducted over a temperature range from 610° to 1,180° F. An operating temperature of 1,030° F yielded 47.50 percent of phthalic anhydride from a synthetic mixture of naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene. The highest yield (84.40 percent phthalic anhydride) was obtained with naphthalene dissolved in toluene and also with naphthalene dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone. With a 210° to 250° C fraction the highest yield of phthalic anhydride obtained was 12.32 percent at a temperature of 900° F, and, with a 250° to 270° C fraction, it was 15.80 percent at a temperature of 875° F.

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

During 1983, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of 19,700 acres that included the Fish Creek Mountains WSA (Wilderness Study Area), 15 miles southwest of the Salton Sea. Two United States Gypsum Co. claim groups in the WSA have more than .20 million tons of inferred gypsum reserves. These high-grade, surface and near-surface gypsum deposits are an extension of a gypsum bed that has been mined continuously since 1922. The Waters prospect in the central part of the WSA has large quantities of limestone suitable for many commercial uses. Sand and gravel is plentiful in the WSA in alluvial fan and ancient shore-line deposits. Limestone and alluvial deposits are not economic because similar material is closer to potential markets. No evidence of energy minerals or geothermal resources was identified in the WSA. A portion of the eastern Fish Creek Mountains WSA is leased for oil and gas exploration. United States Gypsum Co. holds eighteen unpatented placer claims in the northwestern part of the WSA. No other mining claims or mineral leases were identified in the study area. No mineral production is known from within the WSA.

Drift mining, according to California mining terminology - and it is distinctly a California development - is the blocking out and extraction (breasting) of the auriferous gravels of an ancient buried stream either through tunnels, inclines, or shafts; it is one of the minor divisions of the larger classification known as placer mining. The contribution of each of these divisions and of lode mining to the gross production of gold in California totals as follows:3 [ ] The total amount of gold recovered from the placers of California from 1848, when Marshall discovered the precious metal in the mill race at Coloma, to 1928, was $1,226,515,404. The same period saw a total gold production from all operations of $1,823,562,360.

Although early Spanish settlers used coal several centuries ago, significant commercial coal mining in New Mexico began in 1861, when the U.S. Army opened a mine to supply Fort Craig. Since then, coal from the state has been used to fuel railroads, lead and copper smelters, and other local industry. In recent years, lower-cost strip mining methods and an increased demand for coal by electric utilities in the Southwest have caused an increase in New Mexico coal production. The coal-bearing regions of New Mexico underlie about 25,000 square miles or20.6 percent of the total area of the state. However, the majority of coal-bearing regions lie under Indian lands that are regulated by the Office of Surface Mining (see Navajo and Hopi data on pages 72-75). Today, most of the coal produced in New Mexico comes from the San Juan Basin in the northwest part of the state and the Raton Area in the north central part. New Mexico's reserves are estimated to be 4.6 billion tons, about one percent of the national reserve. New Mexico's permanent regulatory program was conditionally approved December 3 1, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved July 17,198 1.

How It Works An Anderson-Mavor AM500 double-ended ranging drum shearer was fitted with drums specially designed to accept the large picks required for this testing program. Change gears In the shearer allowed rotational speeds of the drums to be set at 35, 45, 55, or 70 rpm. As deep cutting removes larger coal fragments, the specific energy requirements of the operation are reduced and less surface area results. Dust generation and shearer power consumption are also reduced. The lower rotational speed minimizes the fanning action of the cutterheads and thus reduces the amount of coal fines that become airborne.

This report presents a discussion of the spectra of 39 condensed thiophenes in which the structure includes at least 1 benzene ring. The vibrational bands present in three regions of the infrared spectra of these thiophenes were interpreted by comparing the similarities of the spectra of condensed thiophenes with the spectra of substituted benzenes. In the overtone-combination region 23 of the 39 condensed thiophenes had spectra which contained sufficient detail to be usable for correlating this region of the spectrum with the appropriate benzene spectrum. In the in-plane deformation region it was possible to make correlations for the vibrations of 18 of the 39 condensed thiophenes whose infrared spectra were studied. In the out-of-plane deformation region the C-H out-of-plane vibrations for hydrogen on benzene rings in the condensed thiophenes can be correlated using known data from substituted benzenes.

A lead smelting process that appears to present minimal pollution problems has been developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center. Ten and 100 g samples of PbS mill concentrates were vaporized at 1,000° to 1,100° C in a furnace with an inert gas atmosphere during a 2-hour period. The PbS vapor was transported by the inert carrier gas to the reduction zone of the furnace where it was reduced at the same temperature with excess hydrogen to metallic lead. Lead of 99.9 pct purity was produced. The H2S formed can be decomposed into elemental sulfur and water vapor by a modified Claus process. Approximately 90 pet of the Cu and 70 pct of the Ag and Zn remain in the residue and are potentially recoverable. More than 98 pct of the lead in the concentrates was extracted.

"INTRODUCTION The Phelps Stokes iron deposit, also known as the Iron Mountain claim, was examined by G. L. Thompson, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1943. As a result, the Division of Geophysical Exploration 3/ made a magnetorater survey of the deposit in June 1944, and the Mining Branch included it in a,project to explore Nevada iron deposits.The Bureau explored the deposit from September to November 1944 by means of 643 feet of diamond drilling and 445 feet of trenching holes were drilled, all of which penetrated more than: 100 feet of good-grade magnetite, although nearly all the ore except that found in the first hole contained an excessive amount of sulfur. Trenching was done largely over the first two holes, PS-1 and PS-2, and exposed the full width of the ore.The deposit is in Nye County, Nevada, 7.7 miles east of Gabbs. The property was discovered in 1902 was patented in 1907. There has been no production from the property and except for the Bureau's investigation,,has not been, explored since it was patented.Magnetite is the principal ore mineral; it occurs as fine-grained particles associated with sulfides and cemented with talc and calcite."

Measure dangerously high concentrations (20 to 500 g/m3) of flammable, airborne dust. Approach Development of high concentration dust monitor (HCDM) which will measure mass concentrations of air borne dust by the principle of beta-ray attenuation. How It Works The HCDM is a battery powered, portable instrument that weighs 10.5 kg. It is capable of making continual (10 sec. time resolution) measurements of high concentrations of airborne dust and can record up to 8 hours of data in an internal memory. The data can be read out later on an analog or digital recorder. An internal pump pulls airborne dust into the sampling section, which contains a low-energy beta-ray source and a Geiger counter detector. No beta radiation escapes from the instrument, and no license is required for the operator. The mass concentration measurement is made while the dust is still airborne. Beta-ray attentuation is independent of particle size and composition of the dust, so the HCDM can he used with many types of dusts which may be airborne in flammable concentrations. A knowledge of the composition and minimum explosive concentration of the dust is necessary to understand the significance of the data from the HCDM. The HCDM was designed to measure air-

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. Trachea removed from pathogen-free rats were maintained as organ cultures and used to study the effects of coal dust exposure on the synthesis of mucin. The high molecular weight isotopically labeled (3H-glucosamine, 14Cleucine or 35S-sulfate) mucin could be purified by gel filtration, treatment with testicular hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography, delipidation and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. To examine effect of coal dust on mucin production, groups of explant cultures were exposed to media containing coal dust at 100 µg per ml every 2 days for 2 weeks while control cultures were treated with media without dust. Analysis of the spent culture media showed that treatment with dust markedly decreased the production of nondialysable glycoproteins as well as hyaluronidase-resistant acid-precipitable fraction consisting mainly of mucin. Since the synthesis of protein was not affected to the same extent the decrease in mucin production is not entirely due to cell death. In separate experiments rats were subjected to in vivo coal dust exposure in inhalation chambers and tracheae of these and control rats were removed for explant cultures. The incorporation of precursor isotopes into mucin by these explant cultures are being examined. Beasley, the smelter superintendent, and his staff members.THE BLAST FURNACE AND PLANTThe general lay-out of the recently built (1917) Bunker Hill plant has been given in the technical press in articles that were cited in Report of Investigations 3088. In addition it may be noted that the description of an ideal smelter given by Riddell 5 a year later fits the Bunker Hill smelter very well, with some changes, such as the location of the stack, made necessary by topography. For purposes of this article on the blast furnace it may suffice to state that the plant is one of the ""side hill location"" type. The various successively lower benches may roughly be considered as made for (1) the stack, (2) Cottrells and bag houses, (3) Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines with the equipment or bins for handling or mixing the feed and storing the finished product, sinter, and (4) the blast furnace feed floor with a slightly rising gradient to the bottom of the bins for sinter, feed, and take. The lowest bench (5) might be considered that of the blast furnace tapping floor at which or at appropriately slightly lower elevations are located the units for softening, refining, and treating precious metals, and for casting and loading lead. A very careful study of grades was made in order to be able to handle the products easily. All units were left with at least one end open to permit expansion of the plant, it desired, and each unit was separated from the other, evidently so that the operators on one level would be annoyed as little as posssible with the products made on another."

The Bureau of Mines devised a new machine-test method for measuring carbon dioxide inspired by a wearer of self-contained breathing apparatus. The new method compares favorably in speed and precision with standard man-tests in which the apparatus is tested while actually worn, and is scheduled for use in future approval tests for facepiece carbon dioxide 'measurements. However, man-tests will still be used to measure the efficiency of the carbon dioxide sorbent materials in closed-circuit breathing apparatus.

"Standard rock dust for use in the rock dusting of coal mines might be defined tentatively as powdered mineral, light colored and free of carbonaceous matter and free silica, all of which will pass a 20-mesh screen while 50% of it will pass-through a 200-mesh screen.Such dust may be prepared from limestone, gypsum, anhydrite, or shale free of sand and flint. For the initial rock dusting of the average nongaseous bituminous mines enough standard rock dust should be applied so that the combustible content of the resulting mixture of rook dust with mine dust shall not exceed 45%, a range somewhere between 35% end 45% being the practical objective sought.All entries, slopes or passageways and room necks should be rock dusted.Additional safeguards are:a.,Rockdusting roomsb.,Scattering of dust in vicinity of shots before firing.c.,Placing of barriers in the mouths of panels, cross-entries and other key positions.Redusting becomes necessary whenever the combustible content of the mine dust exceeds the permissible maximum. This should be determined by regular, systematic sampling, followed by a simple analysis of the samples for combustible content. A Bureau of Mines volumeter for measuring the density can be used for the determination of combustible content."
