The K.T. Dome Mine in Owen and Henry Counties, Ky., has been operated intermittently under several different owners since the early nineteen hundreds. No record of total production is available, but it is said that during 1943 and 1944, while being operated by the Twin Valley Mining Co., 30 cars of zinc concentrates and 10 cars of lead concentrates were shipped. The vein can be traced for about 10 miles along the strike from Lockport, Henry County, to Big Twin Creek in Owen County. It pinches and swells both vertically and horizontally and is reported to average 20 inches in width. In order to develop additional reserves on the property, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes on the south extension of the vein. Drilling disclosed that the vein dips to the west on the south side of the Kentucky River and is continuous along the strike and in depth. However, the extent of mineralization in the vein varies widely.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 2 of the Marquette Range, Michigan is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim; districts of the United States. The publication, of this information should be of interest to the industry at large and the exchange of ideas thereby made possible should be of economic value to operators in all harts of the country. The investigations described in this report were undertaken to demonstrate, on a laboratory scale, the possibility of recovering several million pounds of tin plus tungsten contained in stockpiled and currently rejected slags from the Longhorn tin smelter at Texas City, Tex. At the same time, it was anticipated that the treatment procedures developed might be applicable to slags from other tin-smelting operations. Results of the laboratory work show that it is possible, by pyrometallurgical means, to separate the tin and tungsten into products of intermediate grade that may be returned to the smelter circuits for further upgrading. Several methods of treatment were investigated. The methods that proved effective were: Fusion reduction, chloride volatilization, sulfide volatilization, and carbide formation. Over 90 percent of the tin and tungsten could be removed from the slat by any of these methods. Each type of treatment has advantages and disadvantages, and it could not be determined from the small-scale work which method was the more meritorious. Tungsten and (in some types of treatment) tin-bearing products were diluted by iron, the separation of which will require additional studies. Prevention of a portion of the iron from reporting with the tin or tungsten is a distinct advantage and possibility that will require inure laboratory work to develop the needed techniques for its accomplishment. Tin products from single treatments of stag ranged up to 75 percent in tin content but were more generally under 35 percent. Tungsten products were usually under 15 percent; but segregated portions could be selected, at a sacrifice in recovery, that contained up to 50 percent tungstic oxide equivalent.

This report presents a study of a modification of the precision laboratory carbonization-assay apparatus that renders the unit capable of performance at low-, medium-, and high-temperature assay levels and permits, under controlled conditions, evaluation of the relationship between carbonization temperature and the yield of pyrolysis products. Second, the interest and value derived from the temperature study data directly apply to the particular semiplant carbonization processes and techniques currently being investigated in this laboratory. Data obtained with the assay apparatus enables the fuel technologist to predict the probable yields of carbonization products from pilot-plant operations under various carbonizing conditions. Data obtained with the assay apparatus has been used to predict the product yields of industrial carbonization plants at Kemmerer, Wyo., and Rockdale, Tex. The assay provides a useful tool in detecting, from the carbonized plant product, the degree of effectiveness of pilot-plant operation. Third, the residual volatile matter in some industrial carbons has broad significance. Evaluation of the volatile material remaining with or in the carbon may be assessed through the high-temperature-assay technique. The low-temperature carbonization assay devised by the writers has proved to be a versatile tool in predicting the probable product yields from pilot-scale carbonization processes. The apparatus described in previous publications has been modified to extend the range of testing above 500° C. without impairing the accuracy and reproducibility obtained in the low-temperature range. Results presented here include product yields from a typical Texas lignite and Wyoming subbituminous-B-rank coal over the temperature range 150° to 1,000° C.

[The tremendous increase in mine mechanization since 1929 has increased markedly the application of electric power in and about the coal mines of the United States. Cutting, drilling, and leading machines have replaced hand-mining methods in nary mines. As a result, expansion of the gathering haulage has necessitated introduction of extensive feeder, trolley, grid other power wires. (1)3/ In spite of this vast mechanization the fatality rate from electric shock has been on the decline. However, there are still too many accidents, and efforts to eliminate electrical hazards cannot be relaxed. It is hoped that an acquaintance with the physiological aspects of electrical accidents will make workers end management aware of the lurking dangers of this very common and extremely dangerous form of energy.]

The Bureau of Mines conducted a reconnaissance of the less accessible parts of the Beluga River coalfield in August 1957 to determine, if possible, which areas were most favorable for developing large reserves of coal suitable for open-pit mining. Several outcrops of subbituminous coal were observed within an area about 30 miles long and 3 miles wide; neither the length nor the width of the coal-bearing area was delineated by the examination. Coal beds 30 feet thick or more outcrop at two places, and beds 5 to 20 feet thick or more outcrop fairly abundantly along the Beluga River and its tributaries The coal measures appear to occur in a series of folds. The overburden comprises glacial gravels and poorly cemented sandstones and ranges from 20 to 400 feet in depth. Few partings were seen in any of the coal beds. Samples ranged in calorific value from 6,240 to 8,246 B. t. u. on an as-received basis. Adequate water is available for stripping by hydraulic methods.

"The Bureau of Mines and the State of Colorado are cooperating in an investigation of the oil shales of Colorado. in this report the yields and the results of analyses of the oil and, gas produced from a number of oil-shale samples from the principal deposits of Colorado and other oil-shale States, are compared with samples from Scotland and Australia, where the oil-shale industry has had its greatest commercial development, and also with a sample from Brazil *here extensive oil-shale deposits are found shale samples were not selected as being representative of the different deposits, but they illustrate the wide variation in the nature of the organic matter of different oil shales.A further study is being made of the chemical composition of the shale, distribution of nitrogen and sulphur. in the products, temperatures at which organic matter decomposes, and the results will be presented in subsequent Papers, With complete data available on the chemical composition of the shales, it may be possible to explain some of the differences in the nature of the products from the various shales,Most of the work described herein was done under the supervision of M. On the other hand, operating, costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that a total of 241,502 employees worked in surface mining locations in 2003, corresponding to 212,113 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers. • Surface employees accounted for 84.6% of all mining employees. • The majority of surface employees (73.7%; n = 177,927) were mine operator employees as opposed to contractor employees. • Stone operator employees comprised the greatest percentage (27.2%; n = 65,743) of surface employees.

[The Bureau of Mines has measured the low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies of crystalline K2Si2O5 as part of a program for advancing mineral resources technology with energy economy. High-temperature enthalpies of glassy and liquid K2Si2O5 and crystalline K2SiO3 were also mea¬sured. An adiabatic calorimeter operating over the range 5 to 308 K was used for the heat capacity measurements for K2Si2O5 from which the standard entropy at 298.15 K, S°298 = 45.55 ±0.05 cal/deg-mole, was calculated. Tabulated values of Cp°, S°, -(G° -HO°)/T, and H°-HO° from 5 to 300 K are given for K2Si2O5. A copper-block drop calorimeter was used in the enthalpy measurements, operating from 298.15 to 1,198 K for K2SiO3 and from 298.15 to 1,453.8 K for K2Si2O5. No transitions were found for K2SiO3. The KI2Si2O5 showed two reversible first order transitions, one at 510 K with a heat of transition of 0.29 kcal/mole and one at 867 K with a heat of transition of 0.38 kcal/mole. The heat of fusion for K2Si2O5 20 5 was calculated to be 8.42 kcal/mole. Relative enthalpies are given in equation form, and high-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, - (G°-H°298 )/T, and H°-H°298 . Also tabulated are ?H°, ?G°, and log K for formation of K2SiO3 and K2Si2O5 from both the elements and the oxides.]

Forty years have elapsed since the Bureau of Mines was established on July 1, 1910, by Act of Congress. The convocation of this Sixth International Conference of Safety in Mines Research Directors, 24 days after our 40th birthday, seems to be an appropriate time for reviewing our contributions to mine safety research and the problems yet to be solved from the American point of view. Actually research on safety in coal mines was started by the United States Government in the Technologic Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey of the Department of the Interior in 1908, as a result of a succession of disastrous coal mine explosions in which many lives were lost. In 1910 this work was transferred to the newly created Bureau of Mines. 394 lives were lost annually per 100,000 men employed in the coal mines of the United States in the 5-year period ended in 1910, as compared to 203 lives lost annually in the 5-year period ended with 1949. In 1908 no safe, permissible types of explosives and no certified permissible equipment of any kind were used in American coal mines. Black powder was in universal use and open oil or acetylene lights were common in all but mines known to be gassy. Rock dusting was not practiced to limit propagation of explosions, nor was ventilation in many mines adequate, Our safety practice lagged behind that of foreign coal- mining countries and therefore one of the first steps in carrying out the Congressional Authorization of 1908 to investigate the causes of mine explosions was to obtain assistance from the leaders of mine safety research in foreign countries. At the request of Dr. Joseph H. Holmes, director of the Technologic Branch of the Geological Survey, James R. Garfield, Secretary of the Interior, obtained the cooperation of the Governments of England, Belgium and Germany in sending Captain Arthur Desborough, Inspector of Explosives in England, Mr. Victor Watteyne, Inspector-General of Mines in Belgium, and Mr. Carl Meissner, Counselor for Mines in Germany, to visit American mines and make recommendations for increasing safety and efficiency in mining coal in the United States.

"Production of explosives in the United States during the calendar year 1936, as represented by reports of sales by manufacturing companies, totaled 391,604,500 pounds, an increase of 27 percent over the amount produced during 1935. This quantity included 81,698,375 pounds of black blasting powder (granular and pellet), 262,047,106 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and 47,859,019 pounds of permissible 5/ explosives.The manufacturers' reports to the Bureau of Mines classify the sales of explosives according to five main classes of work in connection with which the explosives were used.Coal mines used 87 percent of the total amount of black blasting powder sold, bituminous-coal mines 79 percent, and anthracite mines 8 percent; coal mines also consumed 98 percent of all permissible explosives and 9 percent of the high explosives other than permissibles. The coal-mining industry consumed 16 percent more explosives in 1936 than in the preceding year, the increase at bituminous mines being 21 percent and that at anthracite mines 4 percent.Metal mines used 29 percent of the high explosives other than permissibles and less than 1 percent of the black blasting powder and permissible explosives. The total quantity of the three classes of explosives used in metal mining in 1936 was 36 percent more than the quantity so used in 1935."

The Bureau of Mines has determined the standard Gibbs energies (AGf°) of CoS1.035 (cobalt sulfide) and Ni2.515S2 (nickel sulfide) with high-temperature galvanic cells using stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, CoS1.035, CoO, S02(g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction C0S1.035(c) + 1.535 02(g, 0.0114 atm) = CoO(c) + 1.035 S02(g)¬ These results, combined with the best available data for ?Gf° of CoO and S02 from the literature, give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of CoS1.035 for the reaction Co(c) + 0 5175 S2(g) = CoS1.035(c) ?Gf° = -38.890 + 18.87 x 10-3T ± 0.185 kcal/mole (866.0 - 1,104.9 K), where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, N12.515S2, NiO, S02(g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0122 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction Ni2.515S2(c) + 3.2575 02(g, 0.0122 atm) = 2.515 NiO(c) + 2 S02(g). Combination of these results with data for ?Gfo of NiO and S02 from the literature yields the standard Gibbs energy of formation of Ni2.515S2 for the reaction 2.515 Ni(c) + S2(g) = Ni2.S1SS2(c) ?Gf° -65.377 + 24.67 x 10-3T ± 0.541 kcal/mole (968.6 -1,053.7 K).

This Part is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a corner. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency which propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center's investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

A skull breaker has demonstrated its advantages for secondary breaking in a limestone quarry by entirely displacing secondary blasting . It has reduced safety hazards to workmen, increased the number of quarry operating days , and has lowered mining costs by 2.7 cents a ton. It is believed that the application of the skull breaker can be made economically advantageous in the surface mining of other commoditics .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report conveys the results of an economic analysis of minerals in the West Mojave Management Area (WMMA), including the Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH), a proposed special land management area. Undiscovered mineral resources were estimated for the entire WMMA, which totals 8.7 million acres. Known mineral resources were studied for the DTPH, which is an area of 1.2 million acres contained within the WMMA. Federal lands within the WMMA are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The WMMA includes Federal, State, and private lands in the western portion of San Bernardino County and the eastern portion of Kern County. The center of the study area is 20 miles northwest of Barstow, California (Figures 1 and 2).

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale beneficiation tests on a sample of corundum gneiss from Montana to devise a method for beneficiating corundum for use as a substitute for refractory-grade bauxite. A flotation process utilizing petroleum sulfonate as the collector in an acid circuit was devised. Results showed that two flotation schemes each produced a concentrate exceeding the national stockpile specifications for calcined bauxite. From a feed containing 28 pct corundum concentrates containing up to 92.5 pct alumina (A1203) were produced with a corundum recovery of 78.5 pct.

The detonating compound cyanuric triazide was discovered*** and patented**** by Erwin Ott, and on account of his claims, the Bureau of Ordnance, U. S. Navy, desired more complete data, so an investigation was made. The results obtained were such that the Bureau of Crdnance recommended publication thereof for the benefit of the explosives industry. Some of the patent claims regarding cyanuric triazide are as follows: 1. It is not poisonous in contradistinction to fulminating mercury and lead azide. 2. In contradistinction to the hitherto employed priming agents it is fusible, and its fusion point (94°C) is so low that the product melted by a single heating in water or steam bath, can be poured without danger in the capsule shell. It solidifies therein after cooling, and shows the density of 1.5. 3. It has been determined that the cyanuric triazide, in spite of its very much higher priming actions, is much less brisent then ful- minating mercury and lead nitride. 4. The chemically pure cyanuric triazide (C3M2) constitutes colorless crystals melting at 94°0., and is not volatile. It is not affected by cold water, and only slowly saponified by hot water. It is relatively insensitive to friction and not too strong concussion, but explodes by impact or when hea ted to 170°C., or when heated suddenly. It is not more sensitive to friction and shocks then fulminating mercury. 5. The preparation of the triazide is preferably carried out by acting with an excess of sodium azide in an aqueous solution; in the cold, on cyamric chloride gradually suspended in the said solution.

The heat contents of four silicate minerals -- akermanite , cordierite , gehlenite , and merwinite --were measured from 298 ° to around 1,700 ° K by the dropping method . The results were compiled into tabular and equation forms suitable for thermodynamic calculations . The heat contents of these compounds are nearly additive with respect to their constituent oxides .

1. In 2002, a total of 4,311 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The major industrial classifications in stone mining are dimension stone (used for construction purposes), crushed and broken stone (aggregates), cement, and lime. Stone mines comprised 29.7% of all mining operations. • Mines producing crushed and broken stone (n = 3,372) comprised 78.2% of all stone mining operations.
