Mining officials, as well as members of the Bureau of Mines staff, in their efforts to make mining safer are confronted from time to time pith complicated problems concerning solution of which there is a diversity of opinion. To reduce these differences of opinion as much as possible and to obtain a generally acceptable decision on any mine-safety question, the Director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines established the Mine Safety Board on June 1, 1924- *** to consider questions arising within any divisions of the Bureau that require a definition of tie Bureaus s collective opinion as to safety practices, safety devices, or safety methods for underground operations or open-pit mining. The approved2/decisions shall form the basis of teaching and policy for the Bureau.

The Bureau of Mines investigated separating HF from HF-SiF4-H2O mixtures by passing the mixed gases through a sodium fluoride slurry in an airlift scrubber and forming a mixed precipitate of NaHF2 and Na2SiF6. The oven-dried precipitate was thermally dissociated in two stages. The first stage was carried out at 400° C and dissociated NaHF2 to NaF and HF. Condensation and analysis of the evolved HF proved it to be 97 to 99 weight-percent HF containing 0.79 to 0.99 weight-percent H2O and 10 to 93 ppm silicon. The second stage was carried out at 700° C and dissociated Na2SiF6 to NaF (for recycle) and SiF4. The quantity of HF recovered from gaseous HF-H2O-air mixtures decreased with increasing relative H2O concentrations. Air was beneficial when scrubbing extremely dilute wet HF gases. At HF partial pressures of 0.24 and 0.013 mm Hg in the scrubber entrance gases, HF partial pressures of 6.2 x 10-4 and 9 x 10-6 mm Hg were obtained, respectively, in the scrubber exit gases. Scrubber efficiencies were 99.7 and 99.3 percent.

Two molten salt systems were evaluated as electrolytes for the repetitive recovery of tungsten from tungsten oxide (W03) made by calcining commercial-grade ammonium paratungstate. Using a sodium chloride-sodium fluoride-potassium aluminum tetrafluoride electrolyte at 800° C, 1 pound of 99.8 percent tungsten was recovered for each 2.7 kilowatt-hours of energy consumed. The metal contained 1,100 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of spherical grains, and had an apparent bulk density of 5.41 g/cm3. T ngsten of 99.9 percent purity was won from a sodium pyrophosphate-sodium tetraborate-sodium chloride electrolyte at 1,000° C; 6.0 kilowatt-hours of energy was consumed for each pound of metal recovered. The metal contained 120 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of hexagonal acicular crystals, and had an apparent bulk density of 7.25 g/cm . Each metallic impurity--aluminum, calcium, copper, iron, nickel, and silicon--in the two tungsten products was 16 ppm or less.

NIOSHAn accelerated testing procedure developed by the Bureau of Mines for evaluating commercially available corrosion inhibitors is described. Ultra-sonic agitation of the corrodent solutions and the hot-finished mild steel test coupons was used to evaluate the effects of several variables on the effectiveness of two corrosion inhibitors. Small changes in the weight of the test coupons in both controlled and inhibited corrodents, before and after exposure, affected the precision and accuracy of the results. Minute amounts of oxygen in the systems were found to be causing the relatively large deviations in the corrosion developed in the controlled tests. Microscopic examination of the test coupons revealed that both surface preparation and internal strains resulting from fabrication methods materially affect corrosion behavior.

"The mechanism of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis is not ye: clear. Recent studies have shown that alveolar macrophages (AM) can be stimulated by bleomycin in vitro releasing inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that the interaction of bleomycin with AM is an important step in the drug-induced fibrotic process. Bleomycin is known to bind DNA and generate oxygen radicals through complexation with Fe2+ and oxygen. To provide,more insight into the cellular oxidative property of bleomycin, v.s have developed a fluoromicroscopic method using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFHDA) as an oxidative fluorescence probe to study the deomycin-induced intracellular oxidation in rat AM and the inhibition of the oxida¬tion by taurine, a compound known to inhibit the bleomycin-induced fibrosis. Bleomycin at 5 to 20 ug/ml has a moderate stimulatory effect (1.87- to 2.66-fold) on the secretion of superoxide anion. A high concentration of bleomycin (20 ug/ml), however, inhibits cell response to zymosan-induced secretion of superoxide anion. At 4 ug/ml, bleomycin has no effect on cell membrane integrity or morphology but results in a significant increase in intracellular oxidation. This oxidative process is Fe2-,-dependent and is accompanied by an increase in intracellular calcium (35 nM). Both the intracellular oxidation and calcium rise induced by internalized bleomycin are inhibited by pretreatment of cells with varying concentrations of taurine (25, 125, and 187.5 uM). The inhibitory effect on intracellular oxidation .vas found to be 36, 57, and 60%, respectively. These results demonstrate a stimulation-inhibition relationship between bleomycin and taurine on re cellular oxidation at a subcytotoxic dose of bleomycin, suggesting that the oxidative effect of the intracellular bleomycin-Fe2 complex is important in the initiation of the fibrotic process. — Environ Health Perspect 102 (Suppl10):91-96 (1994) IntroductionThe pulmonary system is most susceptible to oxygen radical-induced diseases due to its constant exposure to the highest oxygen tension, and the potential encounters with oxidant gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and toxic doses of dust particles. As a part of a comprehensive survey of the Adirondack region, the Bureau of Mines, 1944 and 1945, conducted investigation of magnetic deposits at Dennemora, Russia Station, Redford-Clayburg, Standish, and the Ausable river region. Later in 1945, the Federal Geological Survey, started an aeromagnetic survey of the area and completed it in .1946. The Bureau of Mines extended its magnetic surveys in 1946 in the Redford-Clayburg area. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines .diamond-drilled throe holes in the Redford-Clayburg district. Clinton County has one active magnetite mine at Lyon Mountain and inactive mines at Palmer Hill and Arnold Hill, as well as along the Saranac River.

"Contact-angle and flotation techniques were used to evaluate the influence of oxygen - both that inherent in the coal and that introduced by ambient temperature, aqueous oxidation - on a wide range of coal ranks. Oxidation was found to decrease the hydrophobicity and floatability of coal; with the effect being minor for coals of high rank but becoming increasingly important as the rank of coal is reduced. As an approximation, oxidation makes a coal behave as if it were one of lower rank. Frother only flotation' of coal· correlates with the captive-bubble contact angle whereas when oil is used as a collector, the flotation appears to follow the pattern shown by the water sessile drop on a fresh, un-reagentized coal surface. Coal recovery lost through oxidation may often be recovered by use of a variety of collectors, of which No. 2 foe! oil is among the best of those reagents tested. A simple alkali-extraction test may be used to estimate the influence of oxidation on coal preparation processes and use.INTRODUCTIONThe hydrophobicity of coal is not only a function of its rank but also of the extent of oxidation of the coal during and subsequent to its formation. Weathering and oxidation processes may proceed in-situ for coal deposits that outcrop near the earth's surface, or the oxidation of the coal particles may occur during mining, stockpiling or processing. Such oxidation, whether it affects the bulk-coal sample or on1y a thin outer layer on the coal surface, can dramatically influence the wettability of the particle and hence such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation and dispersion.Many of the studies made on the oxidation of coals ·were designed to study its effect on flotation, coking or pyrolysis. The. present study 'is directed exclusively toward the effect of oxidation on the hydrophobicity and floatability of the coal. One of the first studies of the effect of oxidation on coal flotation was that of Sun [l] who found that as oxidation proceeds, coal becomes progressively more hydrophilic. Low-temperature oxidation (100-150°C for 250 h) generally lowered the coal floatability with an oily collector only slightly, but more extensive oxidation (200- 3500 C for 250 h) reduced coal floatability seriously. Sun also found that cationic amines were effective collectors for the oxidized coal which infers that oxidation makes the coal more negative in solution. He attributed the loss of floatability to be due to the accumulation of water-insoluble oxidation products at the coal surface. Gayle et al. [2] found that oxidation adversely affected coal flotation when an aliphatic-alcohol frother was used, though a small amount of oxidation appeared to improve the floatability of some coals using a kerosene-pine oil, collector-frother mixture in pilot-plant testing. Prolonged oxidation adversely affected the flotation recovery of the coals tested, the effect being more pronounced when an alcoholic-type frother only was used. They also noted that the reduction in floatability of lower rank bituminous coals was more affected by oxidation than was that of higher rank bituminous coals."

The breakage of rock by explosives depends largely on the ability of an explosive to transfer its stored potential energy to the rock as strain energy. Therefore, the relative rock-breaking abilities of explosives can be determined indirectly by determining the relative amounts of strain energy transferred to the rock at the time of detonation. This report presents experimental data on the strain energy contained in explosion-generated strain pulses in a granite gneiss. Six explosives were tested. The scaled total radial strain energy Es/W flowing outward through a spherical shell of scaled radius R/W1/3 surrounding the point of detonation was found to follow an exponential decay propagation law of the form [ ]

The Bureau of Mines t.ced its investigations into sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to define the scaling law for safe separation from detonating AN-FO. Both missile- and non-missile-producing AN-FO donors, weighing up to 5,400 pounds, were employed with acceptors of the same size. The usual cube-root scaling law was not confirmed; exponents for the relationship S = f(Wx) for AN were 0.51 with non¬missile-producing donors and 0.61 for missile-producing donors. For AN-FO an exponent of 0.80 was indicated in the missile-producing case. AN-F0 in polyethylene bags appeared somewhat more easily initiated than bulk AN-FO. The efficacy of barricades in protecting AN charges was investigated. detonation distances were reduced from one-third to one-seventh when filled barricades were employed. The investigation was extended to dynamite with both types of donors. With 1,600-pound missile-producing donors and an equivalent weight of dynamite, initiation would be expected in 50 percent of the trials at 167 feet. The corresponding value in the non-missile case was 67 feet. The data developed in this program of sympathetic detonation will allow the development of a rational set of safe separation distances for AN, AN-FO, and explosives.

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes State severance taxes imposed on minerals and mineral fuels, provides a hypothetical example of how a State severance tax affects selected components of a firm's income statement, and uses the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) to estimate the effect of assumed changes in State severance tax rates on copper recovery cost at given levels of potential copper availability. A reduction of the rates to zero or a doubling of them results in changes in costs that are of the same order of magnitude as the cost of transporting copper to the United States from major foreign producing countries.

"INTRODUCTION Exploration of the Iron Mountain and Bader iron-ore deposits in Llano County and the Gamble deposit in Mason County, Texas, was begun by the Bureau of Mines in January and completed in May 1944. The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. Detailed geophysical studies by the gravity method as well as with a dip needle were made by the Bureau of Economic Geology 3/ of the University of Texas and the Federal Geological Survey. 4/ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn the program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy., It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploration project as soon as practicable after its completion. Of the many angles from which coal can be studied it is evident that some have a direct and others have only an indirect bearing on its physical or chemical nature . The more drastic the treatment employed in an investigation , the more inferential become the conclusions permissible from the experimental evidence obtained . Thus , ultimate and proximate analyses tell something concerning age , behavior on carbonization , and possible industrial usefulness , but nothing regarding structure or composition in the larger sense . Strong oxidation reveals the fact that benzenoid , pyrrol , and furane rings are prevalent in the chemical substances present , and milder oxidation indicates that the mass of coal , as in the case of the peats and lignites , is humic in character . But beyond such points of information , very little additional can be gained by the use of these more or less vigorous measures . To gain wider knowledge of the actual constituents of coal substance as found investigators have worked out systems of separation by means of solvents , of which a large number have been employed at various times both singly and in combination . The list of solvents includes petroleum ether , benzene , toluene , xylene , ethyl ether , alcohol , acetone , carbon bisulphide , pyridine , quinoline , aniline , phenol , tetralin , glycol ethyl ether glycol ethylether acetate , glycol methyl ether , glycol diethyl ether , pine oil , mesityl oxide furfural , benzaldehyde , ethylene oxide , rosin , caustic potash in solvents , amyl alcohol plus pyridine , chloroform , carbon tetrachloride , acetylene tetrachloride , naphthalene , and others . Once a coal has been extracted it has become common practice to subdivide the extract by means of partial solution in other and weaker solvents . Thus , we find the oily and solid bitumens of Fischer ( 1 ) , 3 Bone ( 2 ) and others ; the alpha , beta and gamma constituents of Wheeler ( 3 ) ; the classification of Novak and Hubacek ( 4 ) embracing oils , resins A , resins B , bitumens An , bitumens Bn , and bitumens Cn ; Crussard's ( 5 ) malthenes , asphaltenes , and carbenes , borrowed from asphalt terminology; and the 40 or more subdivisions of the phenol extract of coal worked out by Frazer and Hoffman ( 6 ) . Perhaps the primary object of interest in these many researches has been to find the coking principle of coal , and to study it and to learn why certain coals form hard , wellfused cokes , and others merely fall to pieces during carbonization . The origin of the various constituents of the gas and tar , the temperature at which each forms , and something of the mechanism of their synthesis have also been sought , as well as new bases for adjudging rank .

Thallium is one of the rare metals that has come into commercial use within recent years . Its comparative scarcity , combined with a resemblance to the common metal lead , have retarded the development of uses for thallium . Although production is still measured in pounds rather than in tons , it is now finding application in a number of fields . Perhaps the earliest commercial use of thallium was as a constituent of optical glass of higher refractive power than similar glasses containing lead . One of the later applications to attract attention was the use of the oxysulphide in a sensitive electrical device similar to the selenium cell . The " Thalofide " cell , which was patented in 1919 , constituted for a time the most important outlet for thallium. During the next few years the limited use of thallium and its salts in other fields was insufficient to absorb an annual production of a few hundred pounds , and the price dropped from $ 16 or $18 per pound in 1922 to $ 5 per pound in 1924 . Beginning in 1925 several new uses were developed , especially as a poison for rodents and ants , and as a result the demand for thallium increased sufficiently to cause a recovery in price to the present level of from $12 to $15 per pound .

A dense-medium cyclone pilot plant was built to clean 112-inch to 0 size coal. This pilot plant does not require the removal of the extremely fine material (usually minus 1/2-mm) from the feed, which is necessary in conventional dense-medium cyclone plants. The essential difference between conventional cyclone plants and the pilot plant is in the medium-recovery system. The latter uses a combination of sieve bend screens, classifying cones, and magnetic separators for medium recovery. Eight tests were run in the pilot plant at a feed rate of 5 tons per hour with four different raw coals and one crushed jig middling product. Sharp separations were obtained as indicated by an average error area of 27 and probable error of 0.047 for the 112-inch to 200-mesh size range. Magnetite loss averaged about 2.5 pounds per ton of feed. The influence of several factors on cleaning performance of the cyclone was investigated. The diameters of both the overflow and underflow orifices were found to be important for optimum cleaning performance, but these diameters could vary over a wide range without serious effect; however, if this range was exceeded, cleaning performance deteriorated. Better cleaning performance was obtained when the cyclone inlet pressure was increased from 9 psig to 13 psig. The size of the magnetite particles in the medium was found to have a substantial effect, and the best cleaning results were obtained with grade B magnetite. Demagnetizing the magnetite in an effort to decrease the effective particle size did not improve cyclone performance.

Mineral analyses and electrical resistivity measurements of 324 representative samples of oilfield brines from 24 oil-productive counties in Mississippi and Alabama are presented in tabular form. Results of the mineral analyses, which include calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, sodium, and barium (with strontium if present), are reported in milligrams per liter. Electrical resistivity measurements in ohm-meter2 per meter at 75° F are reported in ohm-meters in the tables. Chemical analyses of formation waters are helpful to operators having water problems associated with petroleum recovery; electrical resistivity values are helpful in making interpretations from electric logs.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a preliminary investigation to determine the state of stress in crystalline rock outcrops near Atlanta, Ga. The secondary principal stresses in a horizontal plane near the surface are compressive and are 500 to 3,000 psi. The maximum compressive stress is northeast-southwest in the Stone Mountain-Lithonia district but changes to northwest-southeast near Douglasville. The elastic constants were determined from data obtained by static and dynamic laboratory methods and in situ velocity measurements. Results show Young's modulus to be dependent upon both stress level and anisotropy in the rock. Average secant moduli obtained from triaxial tests were used to compute the applied stress from borehole deformation measurements.

To gain knowledge of the actual accident hazards present in Kentucky coal mines, reports of fatalities during 1931, 1932, and 1933 have been analyzed and the pertinent factors included in tables, accompanied by some discussion and recommendations for the reduction of accidents from particular causes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the effectiveness of automatic water sprinkler systems on the suppression of incipient and propagating conveyor belt fires under ventilated conditions. Large-scale experiments were performed at airflows ranging from 1.1 to 4.6 m/s. In incipient fire experiments with 100°C, standard-response sprinklers installed above and between the belts, the sprinklers activated later, the peak heat release rates were larger, and more belting was consumed at the higher airflow. In similar experiments with 74 °C, fast-response sprinklers, the sprinklers activated at the same heat release rate for both high and low airflows, but the peak heat release rate and amount of belting consumed was slightly higher at the lower airflow. In incipient fire experiments with sprinklers located only above the top belt, the heat release rate and amount of belting consumed was larger at the higher airflow. The propagating fire experiments showed that sprinklers located above and between the belts were effective in stopping flame propagation. Peak heat release rates and amount of belting consumed were larger at the higher airflows for both the 74 °C, fast-response and 100 °C, standard-response sprinklers. The sprinklers were equally effective at each airflow.
