The word "slurry" was used by Dr. Melvin Cook and Mr. Henry Farnam to describe a new blasting agent developed in 1956. This development, along with the development of ANFO triggered the Modern Era of Blasting. We have seen the results, a massive expansion in the commercial explosives industry. Someone once said, "You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been." With that in mind, this paper deals to some extent with the origin and development of slurry explosives and then with their future high potential.

The Woodville Lime and Chemical Company Limestone Quarry is located in Sandusky County, Ohio. Fifty years ago, when quarrying began, it was situated approximately two miles from the town of Woodville. Today new houses border the quarry property within 1,500 feet of one of the working faces. During the past two years, the operation has systematically changed the blasting program to achieve better fragmentation, lower costs, and to maintain good relations with the local property owners. This paper will discuss systematic changes made in the blasting program to increase productivity and reduce costs.

Hercules Incorporated has developed and introduced a totally new non-electric delay blasting cap system which utilizes a low energy gas detonation to activate the caps. Unlike any other initiation system, there is no hole-to-hole connection other than empty plastic tubing until the blast is to be set off. Only at that time, when all personnel and equipment are in the clear, is the special gas mixture introduced through the tubing. The actual time of firing is completely under the control of the operator, by pressing the fire button on the blasting machine.

The unique nature of rock salt blasting is compared to traditional hard rock practices. Rock salt geomechanical nature is discussed in the context of rock blasting events. A cratering mechanism prevalent in soft rocks is presented and exemplified through a series of single hole blast tests performed in salt deposits.

The Lafarge Ravena Cement Plant in Ravena, New York demonstrated continuous and extraordinary improvement in productivity during the past several years. The factors driving continuous improvement at the Lafarge Ravena Plant include: 1) Management techniques including regular scheduled and effective Blasting Optimization Team meetings. 2) A real time blasting database to guide blasting product and procedure decisions. Key decisions involved all levels of quarry and blasting supplier personnel and a close working relationship between production and blasting areas of expertise was demonstrated. 3) Blast optimization and optimization of quarry operating parameters such as blast location relative to crusher location, hours worked, etc.

Technological advancements in warhead designs and implementations have driven the development of arrayed initiation networks of highly accurate, highly reliable, and extremely safe detonators. Recent development efforts have produced advanced Exploding Foil Initiator (EFI) based systems that have been adapted for civilian use in commercial blasting applications.1,2,3,4,5 This novel, high technology system promises multiple improvements and advantages over the manufacturing, transportation, tracking, storage, inventory and field operation of current detonator systems. Ultimately the insertion of this technology would result in fielding a Non-Energetics Based Detonator (NEBD). Insertion of complementary technologies into the detonator’s supporting systems would greatly advance current detonator hardware/software.

The world's longest highway-tunnel -- the Aurland Tunnel in western Norway -- is scheduled to be opened in the year 2000. A project to build a main highway between Oslo and Bergen with no ferry connections was approved by the Norwegian Parliament in January 1995. Construction of the five-year blasting project was started by the Norwegian Highway Authority in mid-March 1995, with an expected completion date of November-December 1999.

A study conducted at a mine site that used traditional field surveying and physical hole spot markings bench marked their combined drill and blast performance. The analysis of the operational expenditure (OPEX) improvement determined there were many measurable cost improvements. A primary factor that most operations have to deal with is over drilling of holes. This alone impacts the cost due to nonproductive labor allocations, excessive explosive costs, increased drill tool costs, increased drilling costs and has an impact on the downstream operation cost such as digging the shot material. Other related investigations also show a downstream impact of poor fragmentation on digging payload tonnes, cycle times, haulage payload tonnes, time to load a truck and the number of passes to load the tuck. The intent of this presentation is to draw attention to aspects of mining we understand but may be missing the big picture effects, such as the ability to reduce the operational expenditures consistently to impact the bottom line. The target audience is across the board from owner operators, drill and blast contractors to blasting contractors. Everyone can benefit from these improvements.

Blasting data analytics are being increasing used to increase mining productivity, reduce mining costs, maximize high margin aggregate products, and to reduce fines. Three examples will be illustrated using simple models to maximize the percentage of blasted rock within established dimensions and reduce fines-one from video fragmentation distribution information, the second from sieved crusher fragmentation data, and the third from plant production data. In addition, the use of sieved crusher results to determine blasting related fines and the use of mine productivity data to maximize aggregate sizes when pattern (burden and spacing) areas are changed will be illustrated

Blasters are usually strictly liable for injury or damage caused by flyrock (trespassory invasion) and blast-induced vibrations (non-trespassory invasion). The application of strict liability to non-trespassory invasions has resulted in significant litigation that has hampered the use of blasting and the blasting industry. Stark (2002) proposes that blasters should not be held strictly liable for non-trespassory invasions but should be liable only if their conduct is proven to be negligent. This change in legal standard was proposed because improvements in blasting technology over the last thirty years allow blasting to be conducted without substantial risk of harm to property and thus the amount of harm imposed by a blast can be related to the level of care exercised by the blaster. It is anticipated that negligence standard will reduce the amount of litigation because a plaintiff will have a greater burden to overcome. To facilitate the acceptance of negligence standard by a court of law, this paper illustrates the application of the negligence and strict tort liability frameworks using actual cases in which a decision was rendered. It is evident from these cases that some of the successful claims under the strict liability framework would not have been successful, and probably not litigated, under a negligence framework, which could result in substantial cost savings to the blasting industry and consumers.

Testing was conducted at the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center for the MythBusters on three separate occasions. This testing included (1) an experiment designed to create diamond from graphite using the shock and pressure of a detonation, (2) the flattening of a car using a steel plate driven by a rocket sled, and (3) the bifurcation of a car also using a rocket sled. All tests were successful; diamond was produced following the detonation of ANFO, and extracted from a graphite / cobalt matrix. A plate was accelerated to 646 mph (1040 km/hr) using a two-stage sled system loaded with 5” (12.7 cm) high velocity aircraft rockets (HVAR) into a car, which was subsequently demolished. Finally, a steel wedge was pushed to 541 mph (871 km/hr) by a one stage sled using HVAR rockets, and was able to cleanly cut a target car in half.

The methodological example that comes from the demolition of the Genoa grain silos, should not been considered as an auto-celebration of a difficult project successfully executed, but should serve as an example of a new generation of demolitions where different technologies, often in competition, come together to obtain the optimal solution of a problem. Dynamite, diamond wire and hydraulic excavators overcame the most impressive building in town, working in very little spaces and on a geotechnically difficult site; moreover, a study on the dynamics and the effects of the impact of the structure, an analysis of the presence of potentially explosive dusts and an extensive vibrometric monitoring supported the design and the development of the operations.

This paper discusses the theory and experiment involved in the discovery of the mechanisms of Linear Shaped Charges, which are much different from those for Conical Shaped Charges. Linear Shaped Charges (LSC) have been assumed to function in the same manner as Conical Shaped Charges (CSC) in the published literature on the subject. Much work has been done on CSC for military purposes, but there is limited information about the mechanics of LSC. Previous theories have cited the formation of a Monroe Jet as the dominant process. The Monroe Effect describes what happens to a target below the charge following detonation of the charge, and prescribes a fluid jet process for penetration. The fluid jet comprised of the liner material is the cutting device in CSC and has been extensively studied. Recent work at the University of Missouri at Rolla (UMR) cutting concrete with LSC has surprisingly shown that there is not a fluid jet process in LSC. After completing several reinforced concrete penetration tests, minimally deformed copper blades were found in the debris. Initially, the blades were suspected to be misfires or malfunctioned charge remnants. However, results were good and blades were found after every single test. Upon closer inspection, the ribbons were found to be folded copper and they were suspected to be the bottom liner of the LSC. A test series was conducted to verify the new theory by experiment.

Chile is responsible for 30% of the global copper production; the world ́s largest. However, significant challenges are faced in this industry; declining grades (1.13% in 2002 to 0.61% in 2015), high cost of energy, scarcity of water, and environmental concerns. Mining trends suggest the future of the industry will be focused in the underground space, specifically due to the depletion of economically viable surface mineral deposits. For example, the largest block cave mineat Codelco ́s Chuquicamata mine is expected to reduce energy costs by 50% and dust emissions by 97%compared to the open cut mine. To access these underground deposits, critical infrastructure is required; horizontal tunnel developments, extraction levels, vertical raises, and ore passes with the on-time delivery of the highest quality outcomes being a requisite for successful project delivery (Lift 1 of 3 at Chuquicamata Underground has over 1000drawbells).One aspect that makes this scenario even more challenging for deeper underground operations is the increased risk profile (people, equipment, and geotechnical) that forms part of the general environment. Furthermore geotechnical risks should be considered and they include rock burst and windblast. The safe interaction with this environment must be sustainable throughout the full life of the project. This paper presents the Enaex group approach to addressing the blasting challenges and outlines the solutions created. Aspects such as rock mass damage occurrence as a function of blast vibration frequency content has been studied, as well as the development of blasting methodologies for guaranteeing the full 100% extraction of all infrastructure blasts, including the all-important draw bell volumes. The development of such infrastructure volumes in one single event using electronic detonators and the associated achievement of ambitious productivity goals, are described as a critical part of the successful construction of one of the most ambitious UG projects currently present on the world.

The regional associations, manufacturers' organizations, and trade associations have proven that it is possible to overcome a hurdle, that looks almost impossible in the beginning, through consistent cooperation. The paper gives an insight into the problems involved in introducing such a requirement, identifies ways and solutions, and concludes them. When looking at the current situation, the paper describes the process by which a prescribed change in business processes are transforming into a solution that increases productivity, security, and handling.

AEBT has been available for a couple of years and is successfully applied in Australia. Up to now it was mainly used in coal surface mining at the Australian East- Coast. Presently, the proved results reach ~ 50 % reduction of Drilling & Blasting costs and a productivity increase of between 10 and 20 %. In 2003 it was for the first time used in surface metal-mining. The mine features for the time being an extremely difficult geological environment and had above to be carried out in the transition level waste/ore. Reductions of wall control, powder factor and vibrations were the main target.

What challenges will we face in the future concerning the use of T&T solutions? Will the tracking of explosives become the norm worldwide? What are future hardware and software developments to be expected? What impact will this have on the global supply chain?

Since the 1950's, blasting practices have undergone many revolutionary changes. Some of the more radical departures have involved, in addition to high speed drilling equipment, a myriad of new explosives, blasting agents, boosters, initiators, initiating systems and delay devices. The introduction of ANFO in the mid 1950's as a blasting agent seems to have instigated a trend toward the development and use of less sensitive blasting agents. The evolution of slurries or water gels has produced dense, high strength, water resistant products which has further promoted this trend away from the more sensitive, conventional explosives.
