"Abstract - In many mining areas, potentially profitable mineral projects can be at risk because local people do not trust their governments and mining companies on many issues, including human rights. Projects will continue to be vulnerable to potential failure, delays, and higher costs. This paper suggests that geoscientists need to be aware of the global challenges they face from issues of corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and human rights. These are not areas in which geoscience education has traditionally focused.This paper examines the types of conflict concerning human rights that are encountered by geoscientists involved in mineral exploration and development. It provides a background to human rights issues and presents a classification of the types of issue encountered. It reports on a survey of case studies that provide examples of the breadth, complexities, and consequences of such issues. The paper then concludes by outlining the development of codes and standards to improve performance, and suggests approaches for positive, practical engagement."

The various microstructural factors that influence the creep resistance of y-titanium aluminides are presented and discussed. Titanium aluminides have potential for a variety of intermediate temperature applications in both gas turbine and reciprocating engines. While it is well established that the 'fully lamellar' titanium aluminide microstructure offers superior creep properties, the particular influence of lamellar morphology, third phase precipitation, and grain boundary structure in controlling both the primary and tertiary creep behaviour is presented. The results are primarily based on tensile creep experiments undertaken using several titanium aluminide intermetallic compositions processed via powder metallurgical techniques, investment casting and Bridgman directional solidification. The results indicate that lamellar structure and precipitate formation have a major impact on primary creep, while microstructural degradation through both lamellar and precipitate coarsening influence on the onset of tertiary creep leading to fracture. The results are used to design a creep resistant microstructure produced by directional solidification and the effectiveness of this designed microstructure is demonstrated through 10,000 hour creep tests.

The long term management of acid generating tailings at mine closure is a common issue, however, management of ARD is significantly impacted by local conditions, including climate. Acid generating tailings, over time, will produce acid rock drainage (ARD) if left exposed to water and air, which both contribute to the sulphide oxidation process. The long term closure of tailings storage areas is a concern from both environmental and engineering perspectives, with long term acid generation and dam stability the main risks. Several approaches can be taken to minimize ARD from tailings facilities using cover systems. Three tailings facility cover case histories, in areas of net positive water balances, were investigated using unsaturated flow modelling software to determine the long term potential for limiting ARD by increasing saturation of the tailings and decreasing oxygen ingress. Each case study demonstrates the importance of integrating the tailings dam engineering into tailings cover closure design. Model predictions are compared to measured saturation levels to assess the accuracy of the calculations.

The Huantajalla mine is seated on Uchucchacua 's Mixing District that is the fourth producer of Silver in the world. Huantajalla Mine is a new mine that nowadays is being explored and recently it has began to operate. The project for 4-A vein exploitation in Huantajalla Mine using Longhole drillings as a new method of mixing is developed by Planning Department of Uchucchacua Mine in coordination with Geology Department of this mine, started in June 2004. This project is funded by Company of Mines Buenaventura S.A.A In July 2002, Geology Department started the exploration on the area of Huantajalla Mine, discovering the 4-A vein. The reconnaissance and definition of the vein finished June 2003, finding 79,080 Ton of mineral of Silver with a grade of 40.0 Oz Ag/ton and a thickness of 1.85 meters (6 feet ). Using the longhole method on the vein exploitation will replace the cut and fill and shrinkage methods, and it will keep a dilution of 15%.

"BILMAT is one of the most powerful algorithms in existence for material balance computation in mineral processing flowsheets. It is based on a hierarchical decomposition coupled with the Lagrange multipliers method widely reported in the literature. Flowrates can be calculated optionally for pulp, solid or water. Assays are adjusted for a variety of subnetworks, such as assays of the solid as well as assays of fractions of the solid called level 4 data (l: pulp, 2:solid and water, 3:assays of solid, 4:assays of classes of solid).BILMAT4 is a new implementation of BIU1AT that operates in a new microcomputer environment and makes the method more accessible than ever. Its main features are a full-screen colour editor allowing graphic flowsheet drawing and data entry with automatic error checking. Mass balance equations are automatically generated by analysis of the graphics and corresponding data, thus relieving users from the error-prone definition of networks. Sensitivity analysis is performed to assess confidence intervals of computed flowrates and adjusted assays.BILMAT4 incorporates an option for gold leaching circuits where the element to be balanced appears in both the solid and liquid phases with negligible effect on the mass flows of solids. Recoveries are computed in all streams. This program is currently released by CANMET as part of the CAMP collection for Computer Aided Mineral Processing. A complete sample run of the program is discussed."

Gold has been mined from a variety of deposit types that range in age from Archaean to Recent. The large variability in the geological settings of the gold deposits implies transport and concentration of gold by magnetic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes. The factors that control the concentration of gold at certain sites and the grade estimation thereof remain major topics of debate. Due to the complex nature of the Witwatersrand Basin a mineralogical study, including mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical investigation was launched on TauTona Mine in order to characterize the various reef facies. The aim of the investigation was to determine if a correlation could be found between macroscopic characteristics of the reef, hanging wall and footwall, and the microscopic nature of the ore (especially gold grade). Petrograpgic and mineralogical results indicate that a correlation exist between gold, detrital and hydrothermal sulphides, uraninite, carbon, detrital heavyminerals and phyllosilicates. No correlation exist between gold and Mg, Fe or S. It appears that clast supported reef is of higher wade than matrix supported, but more work is suggested. No correlation exists between reef thickness and grade. The reef samples had the lowest phyllosilicate content compared to the hanging wall and footwall samples with pyrophyllite the most dominant. All of the correlations diagrams showed significant scatter and suggests a multi- factorial mineralization model. Gold distribution is also controlled by sedimentary features and thus it is not possible to select a single model for the formation and distribution of gold. It is evident that both sedimentary and hydrothermal factors influenced the mineralization and gold distribution on TauTona mine. It is thus essential that all related theories be incorporated in the development of a grade prediction model.

"In the present study effect of grinding media on flotation of two mineral systems have been investigated, viz. sulphide minerals (including a pure chalcopyrite and pyrite mineral, and two different base metal sulphide ores), and oxide minerals (quartz, hematite and cassiterite). It was shown that mild steel media milling produced lower recoveries in the case of chalcopyrite and pyrite, as compared to the case of milling using ceramic media. For oxide minerals, the effects of using mild steel media as opposed to ceramic media were not as significant as was for the sulphides, although, after mild steel milling, at acidic pHs their recoveries were significantly reduced. For two base metal sulphide ores, viz. Nkomati and Dexing ores, the differences resulting from different milling media , although marginal, were opposite for each of these ores.For oxide minerals XPS showed that oxides and hydroxides of iron (e.g. FeOOH) adsorbed on the surfaces of the minerals. In the case of the Nkomati ore, adding Fe2+ or F3+ ions after milling with chrome steel media resulted in reduced talc (gangue) recovery, but increased water recovery and reduced concentrate grades. Further investigations are currently in progress to examine the Fe ions effect on the talc surfaces and froth properties.INTRODUCTIONGrinding of ores is necessary to liberate the valuable minerals from its gangues to allow for their selective recovery during mineral processing such as flotation. The grinding process inevitably involves contact of the ores with the surface of the grinding device and the grinding media. Accompanied by grinding, several phenomena can occur including the grinding medium wear, formation of precipitated species on the ore surfaces, chemical reaction, galvanic effects, changes in the Eh of solution, etc. There is a considerable body of literature on the differences observed in the flotation of various ores after milling using various grinding media. Laboratory studies have used balls or rods made from mild steel, ceramic, stainless steel or chrome steel to investigate the effects of different grinding media on mineral flotation. It is found that the interactions between the ore and the grinding environment can affect flotation separation of sulphide (Wei and Sandenbergh, 2007; Bruckard, 2011), oxide (He et al., 2014) and carbonate minerals (Song, 2009 and 2010). For example, mild steel milling produces relatively high concentrations of Fe ions in the pulp, affecting the recoveries of minerals compared to the case of ceramic media. On the other hand, the stainless steel media or chrome media are reported to be beneficial to the recovery of sulphides, when compared to the cases of using mild or carbon steel media (Rey and Formanek, 1960; Peng et al., 2003a,b; Huang and Grano, 2006; Bruckard, 2011). It is not clear, however, whether these Fe ions may affect the surface properties of the minerals involved or the general pulp/froth behaviour and hence their floatability. In addition, in the study of an low-S PGE ore carried out by Miettunen et al. (2012), forged media grinding in the CO2 atmosphere led to the highest Pt and Pd grades and recoveries, but the high chrome grinding media gave lower flotation recoveries than those using the forged media."

"Since 1989, the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage Program (MEND) has sponsored research into ways of reducing the environmental impact and financial liabilities associated with Acid Mine Drainage from tailings and waste rock. Toward this overall objective, Kilborn was contracted to review the use and applicability of passive treatment systems for acid mine drainage.Experimentation using passive systems to treat acid mine drainage has been ongoing since the early 1980's in North America. Passive treatments are generally considered an attractive alternative to active lime treatment, since they require minimal human involvement, no power, and only seasonal or periodic care and maintenance after establishment. Most attractive is that initial capital cost to implement a passive treatement system is generally low to moderate. Ongoing operating costs are similarly low when compared to active treatment systems.Passive treatment systems currently used, or under investigation to treat acid mine drainage include: anoxic limestone drains, aerobic wetlands, reed bed wetlands, compost wetlands, microbial systems and bioabsorption systems. These wastewater treatment systems utilize the chemical, biological and physical removal processes that occur naturally in the environment to improve wastewater quality, including: oxidation, reduction, coagulation, adsorption, absorption and precipitation; microbial activity; and, gravity aeration and dilution. The rates at which these processes occur determines the loading which can be treated and the effectiveness of the system.The results of our literature review will be summarized, and insight provided into the applicability of passive systems to treat acid mine drainage from Canadian Mines."

"This paper discusses the benefits of industrial minerals, their sources of supply, price and marketing trends, and their increasing use as substitute materials and ""strategic"" minerals. IntroductionKaolin finds have yet to spark the kind of frenzy associated with the 1849 California gold rush; no dolomite deposit has ever gained the notoriety of the Comstock Lode; and few industrial minerals are counted among the currently fashionable list of "" strategic mineral s"". Nevertheless, the glamorous zhine associated with metals may be somewhat superficial; further digging provides perhaps the real foundation of modern society - industrial minerals.They are often tagged as common, everyday materials that are simply dug out of the ground, crushed and hauled to a local point of consumption. Although this description is accurate in the case of road aggregates, sand and gravel, and the like, there are many exceptions to this rule. The term industrial minerals is rather nebulous, covering as it does the mundane and esoteric, the chemically active and the refractory, the $2 and the $10m-a-ton product. All of these minerals influence every facet of modern life from fertilizers to fire retardants, ceramics to cars, construction to clothes, and toothpaste to tennis courts. Their usefulness is well illustrated by the variety of industries they serve; the main ones are listed in Table 1. It is now time to dismiss the notion of non-metallics as the ""third world"" of natural resources business after the metallic and energy products by dispelling some of the myths regarding abundance, variety and value of the group's sixty-plus products."

"The mining industry is facing serious long- and short-term challenges relating to uncertain commodity prices, environmental pressures, and margin compression due to rising energy costs. Energy issues, formerly treated as an operating cost, are changing as executives search for longer term solutions to deal with uncertain fossil fuel prices and greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, mining executives are increasingly willing to consider introducing a proportion of renewable energy (RE) systems into the mine energy mix. This paper examines how RE can be successfully integrated at mine sites, as well as some of the benefits and barriers to their wider adoption.RÉSUMÉ L’industrie minière fait face à de sérieux défis, à long et à court terme, en raison de l’incertitude des prix des matières premières, des pressions environnementales et des compressions de la marge bénéficiaire dues à la hausse des coûts de l’énergie. Les questions énergétiques, auparavant considérées comme un coût d’exploitation, changent alors que les cadres cherchent des solutions à plus long terme afin de prendre des mesures pour contrer les prix incertains des combustibles fossiles et les émissions des gaz à effet de serre. C’est pourquoi les cadres miniers sont de plus en plus disposés à considérer l’introduction d’une proportion de systèmes d’énergie renouvelable dans l’équation énergétique de la mine. In this paper, the rectangular strands of Incoloy 800 superalloy were fabricated with a pilot vertical continuous caster in Northeastern University, China. In the processing, an electromagnetic stirring (EMS) is applied on the secondary cooling zone to control the solidifying structure and segregation of elements in the strands. The solidification structure of Incoloy 800 superalloy strands were investigated at different electric parameters and casting parameters. The research results show that the EMS can effectively restrain the dendrite growth and increase the ratio of equiaxed grains in Incoloy 800 superalloy strands as applied a suitable electric parameters and cooling condition in the process of continuous casting. The evolution of dendrite crystallization in Incoloy 800 alloy strands from the surface to its center during the solidifying process was investigated with and without EMS.

"The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. Many studies and investigations have been carried out on gas occurrences and emissions but our knowledge of the precise mechanisms of gas sorption, desorption and flow from coal is still incomplete. The prosperity of any nation depends, to a large extent, on its natural resources such as oil, coal, 'metal, timber, waterpower, and fertile soil. Each one of these resources forms the basis of a huge industry. The mining and smelting industry ranks among the first since it paves the way for a number of other industries. The mines and smelters provide a market for electric power, coal, timber, and agricultural products: other industries in turn provide a market for metals and non-metals. The real pioneering, however, is done by the prospector who goes into the wilderness to search for the ores from which the metals are to be extracted for the use of men. Prospecting is an interesting and fascinating occupation. There are many difficulties and hardships in the way but the lure of gold and the vision of finding an outcrop that may develop into a large bank account, within a reasonably short time, will urge the prospector forward. Thus, on the outskirts of this northern hemisphere hundreds of prospectors are searching and toiling and of whom nothing is known or heard until they reach civilization and announce a new discovery. Then a mad rush takes place and everybody who can afford to go will take a gamblers chance and plant stakes in the neighbourhood of the new discovery, or wherever an outcrop of mineralized rock can be found, with the hope of winning a fortune.

Maintenance needs information about assets to optimize availability and production needs information about performance and consumption to maximize output. In considering both these needs together as, ?Asset Optimization?, the information systems that support them are critical. The theory of Asset Optimization derives from the Lean Manufacturing concepts developed by Toyota, but some changes are required to apply this to mining operations. In particular, mining operations require automated systems due to their geographic spread and they need a strong emphasis on capturing under-performance losses as well as delays and stoppages in production. Leading metal miners and coal miners alike have applied these systems to good effect in the last 10 years. The concepts developed initially in minerals processing plants are now being applied to the mines themsleves as well as the mining logistics chain. Production increases of 5?10% are achievable with the right implementation and consideration of the some key lessons learnt in the last 10 years. Putting these lessons into action is one key step in the goal of optimizing asset performance and thus utilizing the resource at lowest cost.

"This paper deals with the organization of the central office technical areas and the role played during the feasibility studies, construction and operating phases of Les Mines Selbaie.HistoryThe Engineering Department was originally formed as a part of the Exploration Department, to examine the feasibility of advanced exploration prospects being brought to the company. In 1968, with the discovery of the South Bay property in northwestern Ontario, the department became part of a Mining Division and was expanded, so that it could provide more advanced mine feasibility studies, control of construction engineering and procurement and initial mine design. As is generally the case, the mine design function was handled with in-house capability, while plant, mill and const ruction functions used outside consultants.The 1974 discovery of the Selbaie deposits, started a period o f growth in the capabilities o f the department. The complex nature of these deposits, required that skills were added in the mining, metallurgical and plant areas. During the early feasibility study period these skills were provided by the engineering company of the parent group, but when it was realized that production from the deposits was likely, permanent staff was added."

Laboratory studies had shown that the magnetite contained in serpentine asbestos ore was not uniformly distributed. Ore particles containing chrysotiye fiber responded to a magnetic f field; particles containing little or no chrysotile were essentially non-magnetic. Larger-scale tests, run with a magnetic pulley being fed various asbestos samples ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 5 inches, confirmed that magnetic separation could be used as a concentration step in an asbestos mill. Magnetic concentration was installed at the Black Lake and National mills of Lac d'Amiante du Quebec and has allowed the extraction of lower-grade ore, increasing the life of the mines. In addition, preconcentration early in the flowsheet increased the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section. An increase in fiber production was achieved, as well as a decrease in maintenance costs due to removal of flow-grade tailings early in the flowsheet. Magnetic concentration of a coarse tailings from the mill resulted in recovery of additional fiber previously discarded to tailings.

Abstract - The flux of sediment matter was determined using sediment traps near a black smoker ("Saracen’s Head," Broken Spur hydrothermal field) and the mineral and chemical compositions of the settled matter were examined. The metallic minerals are represented by Fe sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhotite), and Cu and Zn sulfides are also found in small and equal quantities. The hydrothermal suspended matter contains abiogenic calcite in amounts comparable to that in Ca sulfates. The content of silica and, specifically, of amorphous Si is unusually low. Such correlations between chemical elements and minerals, together with the isotopic compositions of S and C, are characteristic of a relatively young and active stage in the evolution of a hydrothermal system. Sediment traps within and under neutrally buoyant hydrothermal plumes collected biogenic material in addition to hydrothermal components. Microbial chemosynthetic production of organic carbon near the hydrothermal vent is comparable to primary production in the euphotic layer. Fe, Zn, Ca, Si, Ba and P are enriched in particulate matter in comparison to the background. A vast compound plume containing the discharge of multiple hydrothermal vents was found to the south of the Broken Spur hydrothermal field.

"RÉSUMÉAu cours de dix dernières années, la compagnie Maghemite a développé, expérimenté et breveté un nouveau precédé de concentration du minerai de fer à partir de la récupération d'hématite présente au bassin de sédimentation de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier.A partir de cette nouvelle technologie de concentration par induction, la compagnie Maghemite produit une poudre d'hématite qui est mélangée avec du strontium carbonate à un ratio de l à 6 en poids. Le mélange homogène est achemine sur un disque d'agglomération, et ensuite incorpore dans la fournaise de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier. Le temps de cuisson et la température (l200°C) correspondent exactement aux critères nécessaires pour la fabrication d'aimants de céramique, Grade 5, à partir de la poudre de ferrite.IntroductionMeghemite a débuté sa production de poudre de ferrite au printemps 1986et prévoit une production de 20 000 tonnes par année dans cette nouvelle usine. A très court terrne, une usine sera construite pour la production de cinq à dix millions de Iivres d'aimants permanents par annee et à long terme qu'une usine de fabrication par robotique de moteurs à aimants permanents, utilises dans I'industrie automobile. La poudre de ferrite à base de strontium est une compose ferro-magnétique forme d'une molécule d'oxide de strontium et de six molécules d'hernatite. Ce compose d'hexa fluorite de strontium a une force tres puissante et fournit la source d'énergie magnétique la moins dispendieuse comparée aux autres aimants permanents. L'utilisation des aimants de céramique formes d'hexa fluorite de strontium a connu un croissance phenornenale depuis 1970 pour atteindre un marché de 500 millions de livres par année en 1985.II n'y a aucune autre usine de production commerciale de poudre de ferrite à base de strontium au Canada. Le facteur determinant qui a favorise l'etabilissement a Port Cartier est base sur la réduction de 30% du cout des aimants de cerarnique provenant de notre poudre. Notre debouche majeur se situe aux États-Unis et vise la production des aimants de cerarnique pour les moteurs utilises dans les automobiles, les ordinateurs et les appareils ménagers, L'objectif de cette compagnie est de réduire le prix futur des aimants de cerarnique à environ 30% du prix actuel.L'usine commerciale de production de poudre de ferrite est maintenant opérationnelle. Le financement et la construction de cette usine sont Ie résultat de l'opération d'une usine pilote sur une période de 5 ans afin de récupérer l'hematite d'un haut niveau de pureté provenant de résidus de I'usine de bouletage de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier (CMQC) à Port Cartier. La fournaise de CMQC est utilisee pour chauffer les boulettes cornposees d'un mélange de carbonate de strontium et d'hematite d'un haut niveau de pureté en étalant environ 5 tonnes à l'heure de ces boulettes au-dessus du tablier de boulettes de fer dans une des fournaises fonctionnant à environ 450 tonnes à l'heure."
