The biological heap leaching at Zijin copper mine is currently the largest industrial application of biohydrometallurgy and one of the earliest mines to develop biological metallurgy technology in China. Since 2001, through demonstration plant and different expansion stages, it has been developed to produce 20,000 tons cathode copper annually. However the ore grade of heap leaching gradually decline year by year with copper grade average at around 0.23% now. The copper mineral is mainly the secondary copper sulfide, and symbiosis with higher content pyrite, the sulfur and iron contents is about 15 times as copper in the ore (S/Cu>15), so the acid and iron treatment of leachate, extractant and acid mine waste water is a great challenge. Combined with located in the rainy area of southern China, huge amounts of over 10 million cubic meters acid drainage need to be treated every year, so the recovery of copper from waste water as well as low grade ore is one of the characteristics of this process. This paper in general introduced the operation of heap leaching, solvent extraction, stripping and electrowinning process in Zijin mine, summarized the experience of production and technical practice, and discussed the methods of heap construction, leaching rate enhancement, third phase formation and treatment, mine effluent treatment, resource recovery and heap slope reclamation. INTRODUCTION The Zijinshan gold and copper mine is located in southeast China, Fujian province, and the typical distribution characteristics of gold and copper deposit are "upper gold and lower copper", both are large porphyry deposits. By the end of 2017, the accumulated proven reserves of available gold resources were 318 tons, copper are 2.15 million tons, and the prospective reserves of copper are more than 5 million tons. The gold mining is open pit while the copper mining is open pit and underground. The cut-off grade of gold mining is 0.15 g/t, and that of copper mining is 0.15%. A large number of very low-grade gold ores (grade <0.30 g/t) adopt a combined ore-dressing process of “partial crushing/ore washing/reprocessing/heap leaching (overlying)/ carbon slurry" independently developed, while flotation and bio-heap leaching are adopted for copper mine. Among them, copper ore with more than 0.25% copper content enters the flotation system to produce copper concentrate, while that of less than 0.25% copper content is processed by bio-heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning. Zijin biological heap leaching plant is the first mine in China to achieve the scale of annual output of ten thousand tons of cathode copper since 2006. In 2008, the solvent extraction and electrowinning system were expanded, now with a daily processing capacity of 20,000 tons of ores, an annual output of 20,000 tons of cathode copper, the expanded plant is the largest biohydrometallurgy plant in China.

The hydrothermal Au-Pd deposits are hosted by the jacutinga in the Lake Superior-type iron-formation of the Itabira Group, Minas Supergroup. Jacutinga is a highly sheared, metamorphosed, hydrothermally altered iron-formation composed of hematite, magnetite, quartz, talc and phlogopite (Cauê) or muscovite (Conceição) and minor tourmaline, palladian gold, arsenopalladinite, mertierite II and palladeisite (hydrothermal) and native gold, native palladium Pd-Cu-oxides, and kaolinite (weathering products). The highest concentrations of Pd-Au occur in quartz and hematite veins parallel to the S1 foliation (Corpo Y, CorpoX, Aba Leste and Central orebodies, at Cauê and a single orebody at Conceição) or parallel to the S2 foliation (Aba Norte). The average ore grade is 30-40 g/t Au+Pd. The characteristics of the Au-Pd ore favor an epigenetic model for gold and palladium concentration in the iron-formation. During the D1 deformation and peak metamorphism, the oxiziding, acid and hot hydrothermal fluids transported Au and Pd preferentially as chloride complexes. The reaction of the fluid with the dolomitic carbonate (the probably protolith of the jacutinga) would have dissolved carbonate and K-feldspar to form muscovite or phlogopite and tourmaline, resulting in an increase in solution pH and a decrease of Cl concentration and subsequent deposition of gold and palladium minerals.

Dissolution characteristics of metals vary significantly when they form alloys with other elements. Because hydrometallurgical processes are essential in separation and refining of non-ferrous metals, it is important to study behaviors of alloys in aqueous solutions. The authors have studied dissolution characteristics of precious metals in acid solutions using electrochemical measurement. When precious metals are alloyed with Zn, its dissolution is promoted by an increase in surface area caused by the preferential dissolution of this metal. The electrochemical study also revealed that precious metals dissolved from some alloys at unusually negative potentials; the underpotential dissolutions are explained by activations of these metals in the dealloying.

THE present demand for men with engineering training exceeds anything in the history of the profession. Recent estimates indicate that mechanization of war has reached such a stage that at least twelve horsepower is required now for every one horsepower needed to run the machines of the first Great War. The scale of operations exceeds anything in the past, while more territory and people are involved than ever before. Many of our allies have inadequate or no facilities for producing the thousand and one articles absolutely necessary to the conduct of modern warfare. Lack of preparedness has made it necessary to produce at an unparalleled rate to gain parity with the enemy, while our losses have been so heavy that replacement, in itself, presents a task which might well stagger less courageous peoples. This means that not only is there an unprecedented demand for engineers to produce the machines, munitions, and supplies of war, but there is a correspondingly large need for men with engineering skill in the uniformed forces to operate and maintain the vast numbers of ships, &apos;planes, tanks, trucks, radios, and a myriad of other devices to carry on the varied activities of war. This abnormal demand came upon us after almost ten years of stagnation in the engineering industries. During this time many trained engineers drifted into other callings, while the lack of jobs for graduates caused a falling off in the number of men training for this profession. Consequently, the supply of well trained engineers was below normal when the madman of Germany precipitated us into the present turmoil. Added to all this, we in Canada are still suffering from governmental inefficiency in the utilization of the available supply of engineers. In the armed forces, engineers have been assigned to office and other work where their engineering training is not only wasted but for which men with more suitable training could be found. Mining engineers are debarred from service as aeronautical engineers, and students in mining engineering are denied the bursaries provided for aiding students in engineering. Mining and metallurgical engineers are both barred from the Ordnance department of the army. This arises from a misunderstanding in relation to engineering training. In Canadian engineering schools, all engineers are given a sound training in the branches of human knowledge which are fundamental to engineering: mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The basic difference between the several categories of engineers lies in the fact that training in the application of this fundamental knowledge to the solution of engineering problems is given in different subjects.

"The Galore Creek copper deposits are situated in the Stikine River district, 640 miles northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposits are primary cupriferous replacements localized in highly fractured zones lying in altered sedimentary, extrusive and intrusive rocks near the contacts of a potash-rich syenite porphyry complex which forms the core of a structural dome in Upper Triassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Ten deposits are distributed over an area of 3.5 by 2 miles and through an elevation range of 4,000 feet. The deposits share many of the characteristic features common to both the porphyry copper type of mineralization and pyrometasomatic deposits.Primary mineralization includes chalcopyrite and bornite, and is associated principally with pyrite and magnetite. The daminant alteration products are hydrothermal biotite and potash feldspar. Gypsum, anhydrite, garnet, chlorite and carbonate are commonly associated with sulphide minerals. Copper oxides, al-though present, are quantitatively of minor importance. The distribution of certain of the primary minerals reveals hypogene zoning characteristics.The results of stream sediment surveys, and airborne magnetic, ground magnetic and induced polarization surveys show important relationships to geologic structure and mineral deposits."

"IntroductionAT NORANDA, the strength of the ore and wall-rocks per-mitted mining in large open stopes. While some of the orebodies were small and could be mined out in one stope, in most cases their size was such that it was essential that ore pillars be left during the first stage of mining. In these cases, backfilling has been necessary for ground control and to facilitate the later recovery of the ore in these pillars.This paper discusses the development of the •backfill and •its use in pillar recovery.GeologyThe ore bodies at Noranda occur as replacement deposits in a block of rhyolite flows and breccias, bounded on the north by the Horne Creek fault and on the south by the Noranda Andesite fault. Mineralization consists of pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, gold, and various tellurides.The main orebody is a massive sulphide deposit designated the 'H' orebody. It is elliptical in plan, measuring roughly 400 feet by 800 feet, and is divided into two zones -Upper H, extending from surface to the 1,500-foot level, and Lower H, from the 1 ,500-foot level to just below the 3,000-foot level.Mining MethodsOpen stope mining in both Upper H and Lower H zones has been fully described in previous publications (1). A brief review only of the mining methods will be given here."

The influence of natural electric currents, induced in the earth by changes in the earth's magnetic field, on the electric logging of boreholes has not always been recognized. Measurements made with fixed electrodes of changes in the vertical potential gradient in a hole near Calmar, Alberta, have indicated the effect of earth currents related to magnetic disturbances. It is found that appreciable errors in self-potential logging could arise during periods of magnetic storms, but the precise pat-tern of disturbance in any area seems to depend on the local structural conditions. As the amplitude of the natural earth currents increases toward the auroral zone, it is suggested that periods of magnetic disturbance be avoided, if possible, when electric logs are taken in the northern part of the western sedimentary basin. In blasting sensitive areas, the use of traditional blasting for rock fracture is restricted. Soundless cracking technology has been presented to achieve rock fracture instead of blasting. However, when the diameter of a borehole is larger than 50 mm, it is very dangerous that the soundless cracking agent (SCA) will have a tendency to gush from the borehole, which also leads to cracking failure. In this paper, a new large scale borehole soundless cracking technology is presented, using a new enlarged drill bit and mechanical plugging, which could solve the hole gush problem. Experiments were made to measure the expansive pressure of the SCA working in boreholes of F40 mm and F100 mm. The difference between two sizes of cracking phenomenon was compared and analyzed to show that large scale borehole soundless cracking has larger expansion pressure and faster reaction speed than traditional soundless cracking. Based on the experimental data, finite element analysis was utilized to study the stress concentration and stress distribution between two neighboring large boreholes in several media during the cracking process. Using the data from experiments with finite element numerical simulation, the brittle material fracture condition was analyzed to design the parameters of the borehole mesh. With the theoretical analysis, the technological process and reference parameters of large scale borehole soundless cracking were proposed, including the borehole spacing, burden distance, depth of the borehole and so on. Then a single rock was cracked with the new enlarged drill bit and new plugging, and the results proved the feasibility of the new large scale borehole soundless cracking technology, which achieved the expected goal of improving the cracking ability and reducing the cracking time. This paper presents a new efficient rock cracking method for blasting sensitive areas, and which could apply to mining engineering, demolition engineering, excavation engineering and other engineering applications where there is a demand soundless and non-vibration fracturing of rock.

Hydraulic fracturing technique, an applied technique to cause tensile fractures to rock by injecting water pressure to a certain closed section of the borehole, is a measurement method of in-situ rock stress. This technique has the highest track record for techniques used in sub 1000 meter. A feature of this technique is comparatively simple and easy for in-situ stress measurement, because the measurement is applicable when a drilled borehole is available. The predominant advantage of this method is that elastic constants such as Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio are not required for determining the value and direction of initial stress. The factors to determine the stress state are the water pressures of re-opening and shut-in of fractures around the borehole wall and its directions. With conventional methods, however, the accuracy of the derived stress states from the observation equations was often adversely affected by the lack of consideration of the remaining water pressure in fractures and insufficient stiffness of the pressurization system. We have developed a new hydraulic fracturing system based on a new test method concept overcoming these defects, and applied to a 300 meter deep borehole in granite. The most important improvement of the new system is an employment of a syringe pump which enables an accurate flow control of fluid with less than 1ml/min in the pressure of 30MPa. Therefore the new test system has a quick response for pressurising in the interval zone, and the measured data was confirmed extremely accurate.

"Whitehorse Copper is a 2600-ton-per-day underground copper mine located within the city limits of Whitehorse, Yukon . In early 1978, due to increasingly difficult ground conditions. it was decided to investigate the conversion from longhole open stoping to vertical crater retreat mining. On-site crater testing by C-I-L demonstrated the feasibility of V.C.R. mining at Whitehorse Copper.After some investigation. a down-the-hole drilling rig was chosen and drilling began in November /978. Blasting began in June /979. and to September 1980 approximately one million tons of ore had been blasted. In-field changes to both drilling and blasting techniques have been implemented. Some of these changes were dictated by problems encountered; others were made to improve efficiencies.To date. V.C.R. mining has proven successful from a drilling and blasting aspect.IntroductionWhitehorse Copper Mines Ltd ., a division of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited , is a 2600-Lp.d. underground copper mine. The plant site is located I mile west of the Alaska Highway, and approximately 7 miles south of Whitehorse city center. Production is from the Little Chief orebody, and total output is from vertical crater retreat stopes.The Little Chief and Middle Chief orebodies at Whitehorse Copper had original reserves in excess of 6 million tons, most of which graded 2.00/0 copper or higher . The orebodies are typical skarn deposits that have developed along the contact between an intrusive diorite and a limestone-quartzite flank pendant. The limestone has been metasomatized to form a calcium-magnesium skarn which, along the limestone / quartzite contact, has locally further developed into a mineralized magnetite-serpentine skarn. The principal copper minerals are bornite and chalcopyrite, with minor chalcocite and valleriite. Skarn gangue minerals are serpentine, diopside, garnet, epidote, calcite and wollastonite. Appreciable values in gold with some silver are present and recovered as well."

In the laboratory phase a flowsheet was developed which involved grinding, gravity separation and flotation. The gravity concentrates were upgraded by magnetic separation and the flotation concentrates by gravity concentration . Pre-concentration by electronic ore sorting, magnetic separation and heavy media separation also was examined.The developed flowsheet was applied on a pilot-plant scale in the second phase of the testwork to the ore as received, and to ore pre-concentrated by electronic ore sorting and magnetic separation. "The development and operation of the milling circuits treating the different Selbaie orebodies are discussed in this paper. The project is reviewed from metallurgical evaluation through construction to present operating status. The current flowsheets are described, with discussion of some unusual features.IntroductionThe Selbaie concentrator commenced initial production in August 1981, treating underground B zone copper ore in a single 1500 t/d circuit. Throughput was increased to 1650 t/d in 1985. The mill was expanded in 1986 to treat ore from the A-I zone open pit; an independent circuit was added to selectively treat 5000 t/d of copper-zinc ore. Current total mill throughput through both circuits averages 7200 t/d with the production of approximately 270 t/d of copper concentrate and 230 t/d of zinc concentrate.This paper describes the stages involved in bringing the project from initial laboratory testing to its current status as one of the most important producers of silver, copper and zinc in Quebec and a major employer in the region."

In the case of industrial mineral s, the selection was initiated at a meeting held at the offices of the Department of Mines and Energy, Winnipeg, Manitoba, in October 1985. Investigations into the effect of a variety of acid digestions on common rock-forming minerals demonstrated a considerable variation in the proportion of the total metal extracted. A similar situation applies to the analysis of a number of common rock types. In addition, grain-size variation has an effect on the amount extracted by certain digestions. This work indicates that considerable care needs to be given to selecting an appropriate acid digestion capable of determining metal held in particular components of a sample. By using partial extraction techniques, the identification of certain patterns of metal distribution, undetectable by normal methods involving total metal analysis, may be achieved.

"Refractoriness in Carlin-type gold ores results mostly from fine locking of gold in pyrite, locking in various gangue phases, notably quartz, and a ""preg robbing"" condition attributed to organic carbon. All three conditions may occur in any given deposit, including Newmont &apos;s Carlin and Gold Quarry deposits in Nevada, where types of ref ractoriness occur locally in minor amounts.Measurements of specific gravity, water absorption and screen size distributions of gold in alteration rock types from Gold Quarry show transitional changes from siliceous cherts through decreasingly silicified and increasingly argillized siltstones.Low permeability of siliceous ores contributes to ""size dependent"" refractoriness in cyanidation test work. Colligative physical and chemical measurements demonstrate that silicified cherty ores are difficult to grind, poorly permeable, and less amenable to cyanidation. Refractoriness in pad or column leaching of coarsely crushed siliceous siltstones and cherts is shown to correlate with interrelated measurable mineralogic and physical parameters.IntroductionMetallurgical treatment of variably amenable and refractory types of gold ore may be guided by both analytical and mineralogic data on the interlocking of gold (microscopic an d sub- microscopic) in assorted gangue/sulphide phases. Most oxidized ores from the Carlin gold mine, north of Carlin, Nevada, are amenable to direct cyanidation. The permeability of most oxidized ores from Carlin coupled with the fine size of the gold < 1.5 um) yields rapid extractions and high recovery without fine grinding.Small portions of the Carlin ore body, and also the nearby Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry orebodies, are less amenable to cyanidation, and are classified as refractory. Refractory conditions may be attributed mostly to the association or interlocking of gold with pyrite and /or microcrystalline quartz or chert, and also by the adsorption of leached gold by deleterious forms of carbon, termed ""preg-robbing"" carbon. Each of these conditions are described and defined, with emphasis on a form of silica-locking, which has been referred to as "" size dependent"" refractoriness."

Nearly 90 per cent of the iron ore produced in Canada is derived from iron-formation or bedded iron deposits. About 70 per cent of this consists of concentrates obtained fom iron-formation; another 20 per cent was formed by natural enrichment processes. Four principal varieties of iron-formation are recognized -the Algoma, Superior, Clinton and Minette types. Differences in their geology, mineralogy, chemical composition and environment of deposition are of special significance in their evaluation as ore.

"The coal handling plant represents an investment of about $100 million in coal handling and storage equipment. The coal receiving is done by a continuous ship unloader that can handle ships in the 60 000 T range at Q rate of 1750 /ph. A unique feature in the system is a stacker/reclaimer unit which will work inside a dome storage structure. The coal for the unit will include any low sulphur coal that can be delivered by sea at an economical price blended with New Brunswick high sulphur coal.ThE flue gas scrubber is a wet limestone system capable of 95% SO2 removal. The scrubber will utilize about 150 000 tonnes of limestone per year and will produce commercial grade gypsum by the forced oxidization method.IntroductionWith the need for new generating capacity being required, New Brunswick Power reviewed, in 1985, its options for the next unit. The study indicated that the most attractive option for New Brunswick Power would be a coal-fired unit capable of receiving imported coal at a sea port. The site selection process resulted in three site options being considered.The existing Coleson Cove and Dalhousie sites, and the Belledune site were considered. To meet load distribution needs, it was then decided that the unit had to be located in the northern section of the province, thus eliminating the Coleson Cove site. The Belledune site was selected because it had the capacity to have additional units added where as the Dalhousie site would have only been able to accommodate one unit"

"The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company are planning to construct a permanent storage facility for high-level nuclear waste at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository relates to large fracture shear displacements, since these may damage intersected waste containers. Although details in fracture surface geometries are known to influence slip magnitudes and distributions, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties due to lack of relevant field-scale data and to limitations in available modelling tools. The purpose of the work described in this paper is to explore the possibilities to use the distinct element code 3DEC to generate and analyze models with isolated, non-planar fractures and, based on the results of such models, get perspectives on the influence of basic disturbances such as ridges, steps and waves. Given the model set-up, fracture segments with orientations deviating from the critical one will contribute to stabilize the fracture. As a result, all analyzed non-planar fractures slip less than the critically oriented planar fracture. We demonstrate that the angle of deviation is the most influential parameter determining the slip magnitude for comparable surface geometries. Similarly inclined steps and ridges have almost equal slip reductions despite differences in surface area restricting the movement. Although it may be possible to translate the influence of such irregularities to an effective coefficient of friction that could be used as input to models with idealized planar fractures, additional analyses with randomly shaped and distributed asperities, different fracture sizes and with alternative stress loads, need to be carried out to devise a defensible strategy for this type of parameter variation. INTRODUCTIONThe Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company’s (SKB) concept for deep geological storage of high-level nuclear waste is the KBS-3 method according to which the waste will be encapsulated in copper canisters and deposited, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, in vertical deposition holes at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock (SKB 2011). A site has been selected in the Forsmark area, which is located some 120 km north of the Swedish capital Stockholm. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository that has been identified by SKB (SKB 2011) is related to large shear displacements along repository host rock fractures induced by a nearby earthquake, since these may cause mechanical damage to intersected waste containers. Due to lack of relevant data at the appropriate field scale and to limitations in available modelling tools, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties. The standard numerical tool, 3DEC (Itasca 2013), used in SKB’s rock mechanics analyses, for example, generates planar fractures by default. Results from dynamic 3DEC earthquake-models (Fälth et al. 2010) currently provide input to layout decisions, i.e., the diameter of the smallest planar fractures that must be avoided when deciding on waste container positions at different distances from potential earthquake faults. It is, however, well known that fracture surfaces are rough or undulating on a wide range of scales (e.g., Candela et al. 2012) and that such deviations from planarity influence the mechanical behaviour of the fractures (e.g., Dieterich and Smith 2009, Marshall and Morris 2012, Ritz and Pollard 2012). It will probably never be a realistic option to attempt to represent the geometrical complexity of a population of fractures of different size, shape and surface structure in any large-scale rock mechanical analysis relevant for the performance assessments of the nuclear waste repository. Mineralogical controls exert significant control over the extraction of uranium from its ores. Uranium speciation, associated mineralogy, deportment and uranium mineral availability are all factors of consideration when assessing leachibility. This study presents data from laboratory uranium extractions undertaken on several contrasting uranium ores from a wide range of orebodies. The results provide insight into the mineralogical factors of importance when considering uranium extraction. These results are presented within the wider context of geometallurgy and demonstrate how geometallurgical assessment, even at an early stage of mine development, can greatly assist in the design of a suitable extraction scheme.
