A HISTOR Y of the development and application of instruments, from the simplest U gauge to a modern indicating recording controller, would contain many interesting accounts of difficulties experienced and over-come. Important as is the history of development to any branch of science, this phase will, of necessity, have to be omitted from this paper and remarks confined to the results from the use of instruments in their present form. The steel industry bas, in the past decade, become increasingly instrument minded. More than ever, economy and adherence to doser specifications are demanded, and any tool that will aid in attaining these objectives by intelligent application and use finds a ready acceptance. The open-hearth furnace bas offered a field for instruments which is different from almost any other and one in which even a small percentage saved in operating costs may represent a considerable sum. Nevertheless, this department of the steel industry has been more cautions than most others in accepting the benefits which automatic control bas given on many other types of industrial furnaces, and one is puzzled why open hearths have not more generally benefited by the application of controlling instruments. The furnace operator bas to adjust the same three main valves that control fuel, combustion air, and stack draft as on most other furnaces, with the additional regulation of reversing the furnace. He is just as aware of the importance of proper draft control and correct air volume to burn most economically the applied fuel as any good boiler-plant engineer. What, then, are the special conditions that pertain to the open-hearth furnace?

Of all the elements, sulphur occupies a place by itself. It is mined in situ, in such quantities and of such purity that, as regards the tonnage produced, it is the first of any element on the list. Iron and coal the great tonnage producers, are combinations of elements, while sulphur is mined and marketed almost chemically pure. It is sold, in large quantities, commercially, calling for a purity of 99.5 per cent while for medicinal purposes, the Pharmacopoeia requires only 99 per cent. purity. It is a very common commodity, and like many common things is of extreme importance, in the progress of our civilization. The substance has been known from the earliest times, the word sulphur being derived from the Sanskrit Culvari", hence the Latin Sulphur. Commercially it is also called brimstone, this word being a derivative of the Anglo-Saxon Bryne Stane or burning stone. From our younger days, we have been more or less familiar with the mineral. On the spiritual side being threatened, if we did not behave ourselves, with an ultimate consumption in a lake of fire and brimstone, (which in moments of reflexion was not pleasant to contemplate) while our bodily ills were taken care of by inward applications as a spring medicine. In both instances, the effect required, was generally attained. Sulphur occurs in nature, both free and in the combined state, it being estimated that it forms, over one tenth of one per cent of the first ten miles of the earths surface. At the 1924 Annual Meeting of the Institute, held in Toronto, the writer presented some notes on the occurrence of salt at Malagash, Nova Scotia, together with a few remarks on the uses of salt. The development of these salt mines has attracted considerable attention to the district, and it may be of interest at this time to call attention to some of the newer uses of salt, and to give a brief account of the genesis of the Maritime salines, As it is not proposed to treat the subject in technical detail, and the paper is written in a lighter vein than is usual in contributions to your Transactions, you will please overlook any variations from a strictly technical method of presentation. The world's supply of salt is obtained in three principal ways: (1) By flooding shallow areas, or pans, with sea water, allowing the water to evaporate naturally by the heat of the sun's rays, and collecting the residue of solid salt. This method is employed, for example, at Turks Island, B.W.I. (2) By mining the rock salt in its natural state, and preparing it for market by a grinding process. This is the method adopted at Malagash, which is the only place in Canada where salt is actually mined. (3) By drilling a hole into an underground salt deposit, forcing fresh water clown the hole, and, after it has become saturated with salt, pumping the brine to the surface and recovering the salt by evaporation. This is the method pursued by the Canadian Salt Company, the Dominion Salt Company, and other producers in Ontario.

Today, indoor air quality, especially in manufacturing industries, is of great interest due to the use of new processes and advanced materials such as those containing nanoparticles. Manufacturing processes generate aerosols (dry or wet) which can be detrimental to occupational health and safety and to the environment. Controlling metallic particle emissions during machining processes should limit their formation at the source, and thus minimize the risk of exposure; this at-source reduction requires the characterization of the particle emitted (size, nature, concentration, etc). The metrics normally used in characterizing fine and ultrafine particles include the mass concentration, the specific surface and the number concentration. Most of these metrics are affected by the size, the geometry and the density of the measured particles. Information about the form and the real size of the particles is thus very important. A procedure for collecting and characterizing fine and ultrafine metallic particles was developed and applied to the study of particles emission during the machining of aluminum alloys. It was found that metallic particles emitted during the machining of aluminum alloys are of various shapes and sizes, and this information must be taken into account when characterizing these particles.

Risk-based Inspection (RBI) addresses the challenges associated with ageing plants by focusing the inspection effort on the process equipments with the highest risk, thereby improving plant safety and reducing inspection costs. The RBI methodology is commonly used in the oil industry through the API 581 standard. Since no such standard exists in the mining and metals industry, BPR-Bechtel has developed one using inspection data from process equipments in CEZinc. Models were developed for various damage mechanisms, such as uniform corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. The equations were organized into a user friendly software that facilitates the implementation process.

"Methane emission and the desorption characteristics of vertical borehole coal samples of Greenhills multiple seams in the vicinity of Elkford, British Columbia were investigated. Three vertical boreholes at depths of 335 m, 380 m and 395 m were drilled along the west wall of an active open pit mine and 44 core samples from various coal seams were obtained for desorption studies.The results are presented in three tables and illustrated with six figures. The methane content was found to increase significantly at depths greater than 200 m. The adsorption equation by Kim and the properties of the coal have been used to predict the methane content and these were compared with the measured values by the direct method.IntroductionThe coalification of plant material in the sedimentary rock produces different ranks of co al and gases of various composition. The gas mixtures are retained in coal beds and rock strata under pressure. The gas content in a coal bed varies considerably depending on the rank of coal and the depth of overburden. The gas content is defined as the volume of gases adsorbed in a unit weight of coal materials. The net amount of gases remaining in a coal seam depends on the difference in the rate of generation of methane by geo-thermal heat and the rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal bed through sedimentary cover. The major factor that causes the change in rank and the liberation of gases is the temperature, which is governed by the thermal conductivity of sedimentary cover and the heat flux through the underlying rocks. The rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal is governed by the porosity of the overlying rocks and the degree of fracture. The measured values of gas content in major North American coal beds are from zero up to 24 cm3 per gram of coal(1,2). A gas content of 2.5 to 9 cm3/g is considered ""gassy"" and that of 9 cm3/g or higher is considered ""very gassy"" for underground mining(3). Normally, the gas mixtures released from bituminous coal in Canada contain 90 to 98% methane and the remainder is made up of CO2, N2, 02, H2, He and other hydrocarbons(4)."

When the Hedley Mascot mill was built in 1935, it was designed as a straight flotation plant. The ore to be treated at that time was a gold ore in which the gold was intimately associated with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite in highly silicified and garnetized limestone gangue. This material was ground to 85 per cent minus 325 mesh in two-stage grinding and floated in standard flotation cells to produce about a 5-ounce concentrate, which was shipped to Tacoma smelter for refining. This arrangement gave us a recovery of about 89 per cent. Test work indicated that the best way to improve this recovery would be to build a cyanide plant to treat our flotation middling. Arrangements for the construction of this plant were finally approved and work on it was started in the spring of 1940. This plant was of the conventional type in which the flotation middlings were thickened, filtered, and then put through the usual cyanide process. Its capacity was 50 tons of middlings per day. This arrangement worked quite satisfactorily and gave us an increase in overall recovery of 4 per cent. Unfortunately, about the time the plant was completed, we developed, and started to ship to the mill, ore that differed entirely from that met with up to that time. Instead of being hard, it was very soft, the orebody from which- it came being much faulted and brecciated. In many sections, the sulphides were oxidized and the breccia was filled in with a very soft, hydrous iron silicate known as chloropal. When this new ore was mixed with the old ore and sent to the mill, the whole operation was disrupted. The chloropal slimed so badly that the classification, flotation circuits, and cyanide plant would not handle it. The difficulty in the cyanide plant was at the head end, where the 10 ft. by 20 ft. thickener and the 8 ft. by 8ft. drum filter would not handle the middlings containing a large percentage of primary slime and chloropal. This material would not thicken to more than 30 per cent solids in the thickener and, when pumped to the filter, would forma very thin, slimy cake. Overall recovery dropped to between 83 and 84 percent and it was quite apparent that some extensive changes would have to be made in our flow-sheet before this ore could be treated successfully.

For many years, optimising the relining of hard rock grinding mills has been complicated by: ?? the large number of variables; ?? the low frequency of relines (slow feedback loop); ?? the potential economic risk associated with some changes. A technology that has its roots in the automotive manufacturing industry is being utilised to construct a statistically accurate, configurable, and dynamic simulation of the mill relining process. The effects of various mechanisation and process changes can be rapidly modelled and compared. This technology will provide mill maintenance managers and contract relining companies with the opportunity to benchmark current performance against world?s best practice. It will also provide an opportunity for concentrator plant designers and mill manufacturers to plan for maximum plant efficiency, by designing an infrastructure and equipment combination that maximises annual plant availability. This simulation tool and its associated data set, has been developed using recent grinding mill performance data from mills of varying dimensions, liner configurations, mill relining equipment, operator and tool variables. The simulation will provide an output that the various stakeholders can utilise to make optimal decisions within the given financial, physical and technological constraints of the individual concentrator plant.

"Residues from the CESL Copper process were leached using the CESL Gold process. The kinetics of reaction were confirmed to be fast with over 50% of the gold consistently extracted within 2 minutes of leaching. Final gold extractions under the conditions tested here were between 80-90% obtained within 90 minutes. A model for the CESL Gold process was developed. This model is slightly different based on whether the copper concentrate leach residue was ground or unground prior to leaching: the gold leaching rate constant is approximately twice as fast for the ground samples. Unground residues had a P80 of 13 ?m whereas ground residues had a P80 of 10 ?m. The model predicts a 43% decrease in leaching time for ground residue versus unground residue to achieve the same extraction under otherwise identical conditions. The model was more accurate for the ground samples. INTRODUCTIONTeck's CESL Process (Jones, 1996) was developed to provide an economically attractive alternative to traditional copper smelting. It has since evolved to also deal with copper concentrates containing valuable impurities such as nickel and undesirable ones, such as arsenic, while reducing downstream costs. Effective recovery of gold and silver is essential to the economics of the CESL Process. The Brook Hunt 2007 copper concentrate assay data (Wood-Mackenzie, 2007) were examined to determine the ratio of gold plus silver value relative to the contained copper. As indicated in Figure 1 below, nearly two-thirds of concentrates have 10% or more of their total value tied up in their precious metals content.CESL has extensively examined the recovery of gold and silver at bench, pilot and demonstration scale, which has culminated in the present CESL Gold Process (Barr et al., 2007). The process targets the precious metal contained in the leach residues produced in the copper portion of the flowsheet. This residue has two primary components which influence downstream processing. The major iron-rich fraction (-75 wt%) of the residue is a mixture of various forms of iron oxide precipitates including hematite and jarosite (Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The iron fraction ranges from amorphous to crystalline in nature depending on the compound precipitated, upstream operating conditions and feed material composition. The lesser, but by no means less important, fraction is a mixture of elemental sulphur and unreacted sulphides (principally pyrite).Elemental sulphur formed during the oxidative leach of the copper concentrate reacts with cyanide to form thiocyanate (SCN-) making a traditional cyanide leach approach too costly. Since the SCN formation reaction strongly depends on contact time with the CESL residues (Po, 2007) short contact times were preferred. This factor guided the development work towards the eventual room temperature, pressure cyanidation process which results in near complete gold dissolution in 90 minutes. A recent CESL gold demonstration campaign treating 1.5 t/d of residue from the copper oxidation step achieved an average gold extraction of 91% (96% maximum)."

Introduction In this paper it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the problems confronting the management of a gold mine in choosing a method of milling to recover the gold from various classes of ore. In order to simplify the discussion, the more common types of gold ores are classified from a metallurgical point of view as follows: Class 1?A: Free-milling ores which require only relatively coarse crushing. B: Free-milling ores which require finer grinding to release the gold. Class 2?A: Gold ores which contain the gold partly in the flee state and partly associated with a small amount of iron sulphide, and which do not require fine grinding. B: Gold ores similar to 2A, but which require fine grinding. Class 3?A: Gold ores containing copper in quantities insufficient to interfere to a serious extent with cyanidation. Gold ores containing copper in sufficient quantity to interfere with cyanidation but in which a large proportion of the gold is in the free state, the remainder being chiefly associated with the copper mineral, chalcopyrite. Gold ores containing copper and other sulphides, such as pyrite, etc., in which the gold is principally associated with these sulphides.

Introduction and Summary The Northern Empire mine is a mile east of Beardmore, and 100 miles northeast of Port Arthur, district of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Production started in March, 1934, and terminated in September, 1941. During this period, the mill treated 425,866 tons of ore, from which 153,103 ounces of gold were recovered. The lowest level from which ore was mined was the 1900, but considerable drifting was performed on the 2075 level and 800 feet on the 2415, the deepest level. The following description of the geology of the mine is recorded by the senior author but is based on the observations and complementary mapping of both authors. The vein strikes about N.72°E. and has an average dip of 80°S. (Figure 1). In stoped sections, the quartz averaged about two feet wide. On the 1725 level it was drifted on continuously for more than 7,000 feet, but in the mine as a whole practically no commercial ore was found beyond points 1,400 feet west and 1,800 feet east of the shaft. Conspicuous wall-rock alteration extended throughout this section but not much beyond its limits. There was some splitting of the vein and widening of the alteration halo on the lower levels. The average general colour of the quartz changes with depth. It may be generalized, from top to bottom, as light grey to dark grey to brownish. The brownish quartz first appeared near the bottom of the ore.

"The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc. developed a guide of minimum standards for reporting exploration results, mineral resources, and mineral reserves for the purpose of informing the general public. The SME Guide has been adopted by the Society.History1. In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), Inc., the President of SME formed Working Party #79, Ore Reserve Definition, with the mission to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration results, resources, and reserves. A Subcommittee was appointed by the Working Party to draft these guidelines and submit recommendations to SME. The Subcommittee's recommendations were published by SME in the April 1991 issue of ""Mining Engineering"", and as a document entitled ""A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, Resources, and Reserves"" (the SME Guide) in January 1992. Work continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996, when Working Party #79 was renamed the SME Resources and Reserves Committee and became a standing committee.In 1994, the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI) started a concerted international effort to create a set of international definitions for reporting mineral resources and mineral reserves. An ad-hoc International Definitions Group was formed, with representatives from mining and metallurgical institutions from the United States (SME), Australia (AusIMM), Canada (CIM), the United Kingdom (IMM) and South Africa (SAIMM). A major breakthrough came on October 18, 1997 when the CMMI International Definitions Group met in Denver, Colorado and reached a provisional agreement (the Denver Accord) on definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Concurrently, and since 1992, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) was developing an international framework classification for mineral resources and mineral reserves. Starting in October 1998, joint meetings were held in Geneva between the CMMI International Definitions Group and the UN-ECE Task Force, resulting in agreement to incorporate the CMMI definitions into the UN framework classification."

The Intec Gold Process has been developed as a halide-based alternative for the recovery of gold from refractory sulphide deposits. The halide medium allows sulphide oxidation and gold extraction to be performed concurrently at moderate temperature and atmospheric pressure sourcing oxygen from direct air injection. The dissolved gold is loaded onto activated carbon and stripped in a conventional Zadra circuit. High gold extractions have been achieved from a range of refractory gold concentrates at laboratory scale, which has led to a continuous locked-cycle pilot plant program. The pilot plant operated at >99% availability, with a maximum of 96.5% gold extraction from a concentrate containing 58.6 g/t gold. >99% of the dissolved gold was loaded onto carbon at up to 1% w/w, with no loss of carbon activity detected over five loading/washing/elution cycles. This paper describes the process and presents both laboratory and pilot plant results as well as economic data from two costing studies.

"IntroductionHistoricalCyanidation is a leaching process, in world-wide use, to extract gold (and silver) from ores and concentrates. The process has many inherent advantages on account of its adaptability:a. to any scale of operation;b. to a wide range of ore types and mineral associations;c. to a wide range of physical characteristics of the gold particle size, alloy (electrum) or mineral (telluride);d. to relatively simple plant controls and operating procedures;e. to simple marketing procedures and quick cash return.The basic idea for cyanidation was first described and patented by a German chemist, L. Elsner, in 1846. Some forty years later, J.S. McArthur, a metallurgical chemist and R.W. and W. Forrest, medical doctors, all of Glasgow, Scotland, came to realize the import of the discovery and accordingly, registered patents in Great Britain in 1887 and in the United States in 1889. The keystone of the McArthur-Forrest patent registration was the use of weak (0.05o/o) instead of strong (1.0%) solution.The years 1890-1910 saw much progress in equipment design and the advance from batch to continuous processing to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs.In later years, technological progress followed advances in materials of construction and control systems. Current innovations include large-scale equipment, high-capacity thickeners, belt type filters and Steller, candle-type filters for plants using zinc dust precipitation. As well, environmental protection is increasingly a major concern.The technology of gold adsorption from cyanide solution onto activated carbon has made rapid strides in recent years. This has followed the initial efforts of Potter, Salisbury, Zadra and their colleagues of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Research Station in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the field work of Homestake Mining Company personnel, in Lead, South Dakota."

In the pyrometallurgical processes of copper concentrates, arsenic is preferentially concentrated in the dusts carried by the gases as a result of their volatility and subsequent condensation in the gas cleaning train. In this work results obtained by alkaline leaching of the dusts from Ministro Hales roasting plant, belonging to Codelco, are presented. For the Ministro Hales plant the alkaline leaching would be an alternative to the recirculation of dusts to the roasting furnace. The experimental study considered NaOH and NaOH plus NaHS leaching of two samples of dusts, with 4.24 and 2.55% arsenic respectively. The results show that it is feasible to extract 90% of the arsenic and 50% of the antimony at room temperature using only NaOH, and when the temperature increases to 95ºC, the extractions of As and Sb increase. Copper remains in the solid residue with less than 1% dissolution, and the NaOH net consumption was approximately 140 kg/t of dust. In leaching tests with NaOH + NaHS, two types of methods were tested, baking plus leaching with water and direct leaching with a NaOH+NaHS solution. With the second method arsenic extraction increased to 95% and copper dissolution was less than 0.01% at 85ºC, NaOH 100 g/L, NaHS 90 g/L, 1.5 h and L/S ratio of 5/1 (L/kg). The bismuth remains stable in the solid in all cases. INTRODUCTION The presence of arsenic in copper concentrates has increased with time and the environmental regulations are becoming increasingly more stringent. In concentrate treatment pyrometallurgical plants, most of the arsenic is volatilized condensing in the gas train and is collected along with the entrained solids to form the flue dusts. Under these conditions, in smelters of copper concentrates with high arsenic content, the dusts are being treated in hydrometallurgical plants to extract and stabilize the arsenic, which also means that most of the copper contained in the dust is co-extracted with the arsenic. This affects the recovery of copper in the smelter and an alternative such as the selective alkaline leaching of arsenic, would allow the copper from flue dust to be recovered.

Introductory The Alberta Provincial Government has contemplated a revision of the Mines Act for some time past, and it is understood that a definite decision has now been made to do this at the next session of the Legislature. The Operators' and Miners' organizations of the Province have been asked, or at least have been given the opportunity, to submit their views and ideas relative to the proposed changes. The operators have already drafted out a number of changes which they feel would improve the Act from the standpoint of safety and practicability, and this paper has been prepared so that the general membership of the Rocky Mountain Branch of the Institute, which is composed largely of the operating and certificated officials of the mines, might have an opportunity to discuss, criticize, and improve upon the suggested changes which the operators are putting forward.

"The effect of heat treatment on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance of A206 aluminum alloy was studied using the breaking load test according to ASTM G139 standard. This method uses the residual strength measurement from tensile test specimens previously stressed axially while exposed to the 3.5% NaCl alternate immersion test according to ASTM G44 standard. The residual strength after exposure is used as a measure of SCC degradation. The performed heat treatments were conventional natural aging T4 and artificial over-aging T7 tempers in addition to artificial aging T6 temper added for purpose of comparison. These tests showed that A206-T4 has a good resistance to SCC at pre-loads up to 100 MPa while A206-T7 was prone to SCC for pre-loads of 0 and 50 MPa, and showed total loss of ductility for pre-load of 100 MPa. Both A206-T4 and A206-T7 pre-loaded at 150 MPa showed poor resistance to SCC. A206-T6 showed the worst susceptibility to SCC as it lost all mechanical resistance at the end of the alternate exposure to 3.5% NaCl solution, even without any applied pre-load. Metallographic analyses showed that the resistance of A206 alloy to SCC is mainly affected by the transition from pitting to intergranular corrosion attack. The initiation and the propagation of intergranular corrosion attack might be assisted by high stress concentrations in the pits, particularly for pre-loads higher than 100 MPa. The transition from pitting to intergranular corrosion can also be promoted by hydrogen evolution from growing pits, which supports crack propagation by hydrogen embrittlement.INTRODUCTIONA206 aluminum-copper casting alloy offers ones of the best mechanical properties among the aluminum foundry alloys. This alloy belongs to the 206 alloy family developed in 1970s as an alternative to the highly resistant and ductile but more expensive Ag containing 201 alloy (Tiryakioglu, 2009). A206 showed also good low cycle fatigue strength (Sigworth, 2002). These properties made A206 alloy a strong candidate for some vehicles lightweighting applications. In spite of its interesting properties cited above, A206 alloy was rarely used in critical applications due to its tendency for hot tearing and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Studies of A206 hot tearing behavior showed that this tendency can be reduced by improving castability and by grain refinement (Sigworth, 2002). The optimisation of the casting design can also prevent the tendency toward hot tearing. The SCC of aluminum-copper alloys arises from their susceptibility to localised corrosion, especially in chloride containing media. The localised corrosion in Al-Cu alloys is caused mainly by their heterogeneous microstructure, where the presence of many phases leads to the formation of micro-galvanic coupling with the matrix. However, most of the studies aimed at investigate the SCC of Al-Cu alloys concerned the wrought ones, especially the AA2024 alloy tempered in the T3 (or derivative) condition and few studies concerned the 206 and cast alloys in general (Alexopoulos, 2009 and 2016; Campestrini, 2000; Vogt, 1998; Talamantes-Silva, 2008; Zhang, 2003). (Jean, 2009) studied the effect of heat treatment on SCC behavior of B206 alloy using alternate immersion technique and grain boundary attack method and did not find direct correlation between the two methods. Another study showed that aging of 206 alloy may make a casting susceptible to SCC (Sigworth, 2002). However, these studies did not provide detailed information about the mechanisms of SCC of 206 alloy, as well as the effect of the stress intensity. The present work investigates the effect heat treatments and the stress intensity on the morphology of the corrosion attack and the SCC behavior A206 aluminum alloy. This study uses the breaking load test according to ASTM G139. This test utilizes direct tensile specimens and was developed to give a more quantitative measure of the SCC performance of resistant aluminum"

The formation, evolution and classification of peat bogs is discussed. Factors resulting in the internal and external morphological changes in a bog are described. The fibrous, absorptive and sterile properties of peat moss account for its widespread use in horticulture and related fields. These properties also account for its usefulness as a binder in pelletizing, as an insulating material in bat tons and in panel construction. Peat, the humijied product of peat moss is used in market gardening and sod growing. It is utilized in Europe as fuel. It is a source of activated carbon and gas. Potentially peat can be used to produce waxes, resins, tannins, cellulose, hemicellu/ ose, humic acids, lignin and hymatomelanic acid. At present other cheaper sources are available.

Low-lying sections of open-pit mines accumulate water, especially during the rainy seasons, preventing access to resource-bearing areas. To sustain mining operations, the water must be lifted out of the flooded pits at a high flow rate using pumps. These pumps need to be mobile so that they can be removed during drill-and-blast operations. Most mobile pumps rely on diesel engines with high maintenance requirements. A special pump design was developed to address the unique needs of open-pit mining while making the dewatering process more sustainable. Using the target flow rate and head data, an efficient pump was designed, encased, and deployed in the open pit. A variable speed drive (VSD) was installed in a protective skid so that the pump could be tuned to match the preferred flow rate at any point during its operation. This system was tied to the national electrical grid instead of being powered by diesel pumps, which reduced the carbon intensity per kilowatt-hour. The high availability, low maintenance requirement, and greater reliability reduced the use of spare parts, the fuel consumption, and the logistics associated with operating the pump. This further reduced the carbon footprint of the dewatering process. This paper provides some of the two-year performance metrics for a deployment in West Africa. With a focus on availability, maintenance costs, average cost per volume lifted, and carbon footprint, this encased pump system is compared to the diesel-driven pumps that it aims to replace.
