"The main objective of this study is to introduce the new Sandvik’s production cost-model within Crushing & Screening (C&S) technology. So far, there have been different ways of determining different production costs in the industry, however, the previously published and presented methods have not been very efficient in calculating the costs per product and metric ton. Accordingly, the current study has been planned and started in collaboration with Lund University to provide an accurate and easy to implement cost estimation program to determine the costs for crushing and screening plants worldwide.The proposed model has been adapted to fit the C&S processes of different rocks/ores fractions. The result is presented as cost per ton of the end product(s).Within this paper the cost estimation results for 3 different crushing and screening plants are presented based on the information obtained from the following sources: a) documents at Sandvik SRP, b) Sandvik’s crushing & screening internal/external machines/plants data and information, c) literature studies, including the use of Sandvik’s internal/external simulation and software programs, d), visiting the crushing and screening plants ,e) interviews, information systems’ data, and, f) testing and observations by ourselves.In order to improve the level of accuracy and the validity of the attained results, simplistic Monte-Carlo simulations have been used, where needed. The achieved results, so far, have proven the reliability of the model. The calculated cost estimations have shown an accuracy over 80% when they compared with real cost data obtained from plant practices.The current cost calculation model, will offer the possibility of:•,Calculating the production costs in proposed and/or existing C&S plant.•,Making detailed cost analyses for the end product(s) in proposed and/or existing C&S plants.•,Determining the profitability of each finished product when it’s required.•,Cost optimization by potentially cutting the cost for part of C&S plant with an existing plant practice"

"LocationThe Heath Steele mine is located 50 km northwest of Miramichi, New Brunswick.Brief DescriptionHeath Steele is a 2700 t/d, copper-lead-zinc operation which employs conventional crushing, grinding, and differential flotation.HistoryThe Heath Steele mine is located in northeastern New Brunswick approximately 50 km northwest of the city of Miramichi and 65 km southwest of Bathurst. The massive sulphides containing ore values in zinc, lead, copper and silver were discovered in 1953 as a result of a joint venture between the American Metal Company and the International Nickel Company of Canada. The discovery was named after Mr. Heath Steele, manager of exploration for Amco at the time of the discovery.Mill production began in February 1957; however, the mine was forced to shutdown in 1958 due to depressed metal prices and metallurgical problems. It was re-opened in 1962 and milling operations resumed at 725 t/d until 1968 when the milling capacity was boosted to 1450 t/d and then to 2700 t/d in 1969.OreThe main ore zones are massive sulphides with very fine mineral grain. The chalcopyrite, galena and marmatitesphalerite occurrences are finely disseminated.Liberation is accomplished by grinding to 68% to 72% <400 mesh. Average mill feed assays are 0.8% to 1.2% copper, 1.8% to 2.5% lead, and 5.5% to 6.5% zinc, with 60 to 75 g/t silver."

"The metamorphosed mineralized Archean Bourlamaque batholith, dated at 2710 +-54 Ma, is a homogeneous body, composed mainly of quartz diorite; it is cut by late dioritic, mafic and aplitic dykes, and contains metasomatized ultramafic xenoliths. A geochemical investigation confirms the calc-alkaline affinity of the batholith, and the REE profiles are similar (Lal Yb = 3.9 to 8.1) to those of the intermediate to felsic metavolcanic rocks at Val d&apos;Or into which the batholith was intruded and to those of the calc-alkaline members of the Blake River Group at Rouyn.Gold distribution within the batholith is heterogeneous and anomalous. Although the background Au content of the batholith is estimated to be 3.2 ppb Au by RNAA , the estimated median gold content of the batholith is 10 pp b (with P84 =32 and PI 6=3.1 ppb), much higher than that of ""normal"" granites (I to 5 ppb A u). The gold mineralization exhibits a close relationship with shear zones (e.g. Belmoral Mine) or with diorite dykes (e.g. Sullivan, Perron and Courvan mines).The following sequence of geological events is proposed: (I) pretectonic emplacement of the batholith, which is cogenetic with its volcanic host rocks; (2) regional metam orphism and deformation with localized shearing; and (3) hydrothermal alteration and quartz veining. We conclude that: (1) the Bourlamaque batholith is a gold-enriched intrusion, and (2) the determination of average gold content may be an effective method f or distinguishing ""sterile"" intrusions from those with potentials for gold mineralization.RESUMELe batholite archéen minéralise de Bourlamaque, daté de 2710+-54 Ma, est une intrusion homogène, constituée principalement de diorite quartzique, qui a été recoupée par des dykes tardifs de diorite, d&apos;aplite et de composition mafique. "Rare earth elements (REE) are essential and unique components of many high-technology products without which functioning of modern society would be greatly impaired. Commercial deposits of REE are limited to a few geographical locations. Largely untapped sources of REE are available in endof- life (EOL) magnets, rechargeable batteries, and electronics. Presently, < 1% of REE in EOL wastes is recycled. Conversion of EOL wastes to liquid streams allows use of IBC’s Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process to selectively recover, separate, and purify target REE and associated metals at g/L to mg/L or lower concentration levels. The MRT process together with its applications to separations of REE and associated metals in recycling as well as in mining are described. Economic and environmental advantages of MRT are presented. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) include the lanthanide series (La-Lu), Y, and Sc. These elements are not rare, but concentrated minable deposits are scarce (Cordier 2012; Haxel, Hedrick, & Orris, 2002). Over 95 % of the world’s supply of REE is controlled by China (Hanson, 2011a) where they are mined, processed, and the pure elements incorporated into a growing number of consumer and military products. The consumer products are marketed worldwide. Since REE are vitally important in consumer and military products, this situation has caused other nations to scramble to develop the capability to produce their own supply (Cordier, 2012).In the U. S., Molycorp has reopened the Mountain Pass REE mine in California and production has begun (Goldenberg, 2010). Development of a reliable internal source of REE is of high national priority in the U.S. (Hanson, 2011b; Hess, 2012: “Obama Announces”, 2012). These elements have in recent decades been incorporated into new consumer and military products that are essential to our economy and defense. These products range from wind turbines, high performance magnets, hybrid car rechargeable batteries, energy efficient lighting electronics, flat screen televisions, and smart phones to advanced weapons systems (Haxel et al., 2002; Levkowitz & Beauchamp-Mustafaga, 2010)."

"DEVELOPMENT of the underground mine is carried out from a main ramp driven from surface to the 800 and 1200 levels and from a shaft sunk to 3050 ft. Sub-levels at approximately 100-ft vertical intervals, starting 300 ft above the 800 level, were collared from the ramp as it advanced and a considerable amount of development work was pursued. The lateral and ramp work provided an opportunity to train drift crews, test equipment and methods, assess ground conditions and advance the initial stope development. The development of an exhaust ventilation raise system closely followed the extension of the level development to the south end of the orebody (Fig. 26) . On completion of the shaft, temporary lip pockets were installed at the shaft stations on the 800, 12.00, 1600, 2000 and 2400 levels. The permanent loading pocket had been installed on the 2860 level as part of the shaft-sinking contract and the level had been connected to the 2800-level station by a small muck transfer raise. Development of the 2800-level area was given top priority at this stage. This included a 1000-ft cross-cut to the crusher location, the crusher excavation, storage bins, conveyor ways and a ramp to connect the 2800 level to the loading pocket, the rope changing station and the shaft sump. The development and installation of the rock handling system between the 2400 level and the shaft bottom was contracted to Macisaac Mining and Tunnelling Company, of Sudbury, Ontario."

"The deportment of gold in residue samples of cyanide leach tests of David Bell ore from level 6A block 13 was established using a comprehensive quantitative mineralogical approach. In every test the feed was first pre-aerated for 4 hours, followed by 48h cyanidation. Test no. 2 was done without lead nitrate and yielded a residue assaying 3.03g Au/t. In test nos. 4 and 9 lead nitrate was added before pre-aeration at 0.03kg/t and 0.3kg/t respectively yielding residues of 1.04 and 0.81 g Au/t.The mineralogical approach employed to establish the deportment of gold involved superpanning, to preconcentrate the free gold and assaying of the tailing fraction to determine the gold associated with quartz. It was thus determined that without lead nitrate added 47.2% of the lost gold is in the form of residual free gold particles less than 20 µm in size. It is this form of gold which is under represented in the residues of leach tests with lead nitrate added.Having eliminated coarseness of gold particles as a factor for lower recovery, it was determined that the residual gold particles have extensively contaminated surfaces. Amongst the deleterious surface contaminants identified: S, As, Ag, Sb and Hg, the two most harmful are S and Hg because of their concentration on the surface and rate of accumulation.Mercury and Ag are minor constituents of native gold at David Bell (average composition Au: 78.9 wt%, Hg: 18.5 wt% and Ag: 2.6 wt%) and they become enriched on the surface of residual gold particles because of their slower rate of dissolution in cyanide. The other elements absorb onto the gold particles from solution.The beneficial effect of lead nitrate was documented by comparative surface analysis of gold from residue samples of 48 hour leach testing with and without lead nitrate added and from time dependent (0-2 hour) leach tests in the presence and absence of lead nitrate. Lead nitrate accelerates the dissolution of gold by performing the following functions: (i) catalytic effect on the cyanidation of gold by accepting electrons; (ii) reaction with surface sulphur to form PbS which is then removed by oxidation; (iii) catalytic reaction on amalgam and Ag facilitating the cyanidation of Hg and Ag thus slowing down their build up onto the dissolving gold particles and (iv) the precipitation of sulphide sulphur from solution thus minimizing its build up on the surface of dissolving gold particles which is believed to facilitate the access of cyanide ions."

"THE copper smelting operation of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, generates a gas flow of 350,000 c.f.m. at n.t.p. This gas stream passes to atmosphere through a 20-foot diameter by 250-foot brick stack, carrying with it an appreciable dust burden in the form of metallic oxide fumes. The flow constituents during the period 1952 and 1953 and •before gas filtration was included in the treatment scheme are shown in Table I. This paper describes the gas filtration treatment which was installed in 1957, using glass cloth media to recover this dust burden, and discusses the associated problem as its treatment for recovery of zinc and cadmium.The metallurgical details associated with the problem are illustrated by a description of the material flow sequence of the Company's hydrometallurgical zinc plant and copper smelter. In this ore processing complex, the zinc plant and copper smelter form an integrated unit within which intermediate zincrich products of each operation enter the treatment circuit of the other."

Reliable monitoring of corrosion is vitally important in the combat against corrosion and over the last two decades the interpretation of electrochemical noise has received considerable attention as a means to discriminate between different types of corrosion. To this end, many different analytical methods have been proposed, such as power spectral density analysis and analysis via various other stochastic criteria. However, although many corrosion systems are nonlinear and therefore not readily interpretable by the abovementioned analytical approaches, few studies in the analysis of electrochemical noise to date have exploited advances made in the analysis of nonlinear systems. In this paper, the use of phase space methods to analyze and detect change in corrosion systems via electrochemical noise is considered. In particular, the electrochemical noise data are used to reconstruct trajectories in the so-called phase space of the system and changes in the topology of these trajectories or attractors as represented by correlation dimension curves are consequently interpreted as an indication of change in the dynamics of the system.

Surface complexation using a diffuse layer model were constructed for arsenic (As(V)), zinc (Zn(II)) and silicate (Si(IV)) for aluminum hydroxide in the co-precipitation process. From experimental investigations using isotherms, zeta potential measurement and XRD analysis, it was confirmed that co-precipitation involved not only surface complexation but also surface precipitation. However, surface complexation was major mechanism for As(V), Zn(II) and Si(IV) removal under the target removal level of the Japanese effluent standard. In surface complexation modeling, exchange capacity of aluminum hydroxide was determined from specific surface area obtained from experimental measurement and site density obtained from reference. Surface complexation coefficients were determined by fitting the removal property and sorption isotherm obtained from co-precipitation experiments. These parameters were in agreement with the numerical parameters found by Karamalidis and Dzombak (2010) who reported a database of adsorption equilibrium constants for gibbsite. The surface complexation models constructed in this study were applied to neutralization process of an actual AMD treatment. Our model could successfully represent the pH edges for As(V), Zn(II) and Si(IV) in the neutralization of AMD.

The chief problems discussed are abnormal pressures, high temperature, trouble-some shales, and low rates of penetration. These problems have been eliminated or greatly reduced in many areas by• the proper application of recently developed drilling mud products and techniques. These severe problems and their solutions are discussed generally: the application of high-density weighting materials to overcome abnormal pressures; surfactant muds with sodium polyacrylate as a solution for deep and high-temperature drilling; shale control muds and new dispersants for severe shale problems; and low-solids emulsions and •extreme-pressure lubricants for greatly improved rates of penetration."

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. Introduction Extensive undersea coal-mining has developed on both the east and west coasts of Canada, and at this time some four million tons, or 25 per cent of the total output of Canadian coal, representing a pit-mouth value of $14,000,000 per annum, is coming from coal seams lying under the sea. Of the coal now being mined in Nova Scotia, 55 per cent comes from under the sea, and this proportion is likely to increase. The Province of Nova Scotia is at this date receiving in royalties paid upon coal ?removed from undersea areas a sum exceeding $400,000 per annum. The subject is, therefore, one of special interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and while this paper will deal chiefly with undersea coal-mining in Nova Scotia, an attempt has been made to summarize the development of mining practice in the winning of undersea coal in other parts of the world, with the hope that such a recital may assist in the assessment of local problems. The connection between the mining of coal under the sea and an insular or maritime geography is obvious in regard to Great Britain, Japan, Vancouver Island, Australia, and Cape Breton Island, and also in regard to the curious conformation of Chile; the tendency towards growth of a mercantile marine and naval eminence is equally obvious where coal is mined at tidewater. But, there is the further and less favourable significance that the mining of coal under the sea is associated with poverty rather than with abundance of coal reserves.

OVER THE YEARS concentration of the Sullivan ore has become progressively more difficult as the ore has become increasingly refractory. The introduction of new reagents and changes in the flow of the concentrator have been and continue to be necessary in order to maintain and improve the efficiency of metal extraction. Prior to the completion of the pilot mill in 1957 ail new ideas were developed in laboratory equipment. If these were found to be promising, there was no alternative but to introduce them directly to the main mill flow in one step. When a major change was involved there was always the possibility of serious losses while the mill was being adjusted to the changed conditions. It proved difficult to determine whether these losses were the result of the changed procedure or of failure to adjust the flow to a change in the condition of the ore during the test. The pilot mill has provided a valuable intermediate step between the laboratory and the mill. It avoids the losses which occurred when unsuccessful full-scale tests were attempted, and conversely it provides assurance that full-scale flow changes can be made without serious hazard.

Open pit mine management must ensure that sufficient trucks are available and are being used effectively for production, and that operating costs are under continued control and review for improvements. This paper describes methods for estimating truck fleet requirements which have been used effectively at large- and medium-sized open pit mining operations. Applied to commonly available data, multiple regression analyses can indicate when mine plans should be revised toward optimizing the number of trucks required. Prediction of major cost items for budgetary purposes is addressed, along with an example of how readily available production data can be used to reduce costs systematically.

The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry&apos;s need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many &apos;of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

"6xxx-series Al alloys are the most commonly used alloys in the automotive industry as they have an appropriate balance of strength, corrosion resistance and formability. The main strengthening phase in these alloys is the ß’-Mg2Si precipitates. One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series Al alloys, without affecting corrosion and formability, is the use of Sc. The main challenge of using Sc in 6xxx-series lies in the heat treatment, which must be designed to allow for a fine precipitation of both Al3Sc and ß’-Mg2Si. In this work, two model alloys are used, an Al-Sc-Zr and an Al-Mg-Si-Cu-Sc-Zr, to explore the impact of the 6xxx-series key elements (Mg, Si and Cu) on the Al3Sc precipitates. Transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography are used to investigate the precipitates present in the microstructure after casting. We find that higher Si content results in the formation of dispersoids upon casting. The average composition of these dispersoids is (Al0.8,Si0.2)3 (Sc0.888,Zr0.024,Mg0.08,Cu0.008). A closer look at the solid solution reveals that most of the Sc and Zr is supersaturated after casting even in the presence of Mg, Si and Cu. We discuss the impact of these results on the design of a suitable heat treatment for 6xxx-series alloys with Sc.INTRODUCTION The most common strategy to strengthen aluminum (Al) alloys is by micro-alloying to form a fine distribution of precipitates (Gladman, 1999). Whilst precipitates enhance the strength, this is often done to the detriment of ductility and corrosion performance (Davis, 1999). The 6xxx-series Al alloys are heavily used in the automotive industry as they offer an appropriate balance of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance (W. S. Miller et al., 2000). The strength increment in these alloys comes from the formation of the ß’–Mg2Si and the quaternary Q’ phase (Chakrabarti & Laughlin, 2004; Polmear, St. John, Nie, & Qian, 2017). One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series alloys, whilst keeping good balance of corrosion resistance and formability, is the use of small additions of scandium (Sc). Sc is one of the most potent strengtheners in Al alloys (Dorin, Ramajayam, Vahid, & Langan, 2018; Røyset & Ryum, 2005). Most of the strengthening benefits from Sc come from the formation of fine Al3Sc dispersoids. The following strengthening mechanisms apply to Sc: 1) Solid solution strengthening, 2) precipitation hardening, 3) inhibiting recrystallization, 4) assisting nucleation of other strengthening phases (Dorin, Ramajayam, Lamb, & Langan, 2017). As compared to other dispersoid phases, Al3Sc dispersoids have good electrochemical compatibility with Al alloys and hence do not affect their corrosion resistance (Cavanaugh, Birbilis, Buchheit, & Bovard, 2007). The coarsening resistance of Al3Sc is often improved by adding zirconium (Zr), as it forms a Zr rich shell around Al3Sc which prevents Sc from moving across the interface."

The paper will outline the methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. Also for Canadian mines the paper will suggest proposed criteria to be used at MTL for the evaluation of ropes used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL were adopted during the revision of the CSA Standard G4, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage to be published most likely in year 2001. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The existing fifth edition of CSA Standard CAN/CSA -G4-92, which is intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish.
