With the continuing move towards digital signal based control and measurement, it is inevitable that such technology will be increasingly employed on remote sites. The benefits of increased metallurgical performance, of reduced energy and manpower requirements far outweigh the problems associated with high technology in remote locations, provided that the installation is well thought out from both technical and manpower viewpoints. The new accessibility of vast quantities of process data will uncover previously unthought of savings and profit opportunities but brings with it the responsibility to carefully design the data presentation methods. The resulting changes in installed hardware will force changes in the maintenance and engineering workforce and will affect even the stores and purchasing department methods.

The rnunber of Cenozoic volcanoes which has already been found in China surpasses 600. An ancient Chinese tourist, Xu Xiake (1587-1641 in the Ming Dynasty), mentioned in his travel notes the volcanoes and hot 'springs in Tengchong, a country of the Yunnan Province, 400 years ago. In 1927, the geologist, Yun Zhanli, expounded generally on the recent volcano distribution in China. In the '70's, China not only accomplished aerial photography and produced topographic and geological naps covering the whole country, but also obtained a new understanding of the geographic distribution and process of development of the Cenozoic volcanoes through Landsat imagery; interpretation and ground verification, together with C14 isotope dating and analysis of volcanic rocks.

A trend towards mining more complex and economically marginal orebodies, often combined with increasingly tight product specifications, increases the number of variables which need to be considered in production scheduling. Linear programming incorporating integer constraints can be used to create production schedules which are practical as well as mathematically optimum. Factors which can be taken into account include variability in product stockpiles, targets for head or product grades, production of different material types, production from different areas, production targets for loaders, and dependencies between mining blocks. For each schedule an appropriate objective for optimisation must be chosen. Examples of objectives are: to minimise or maximise grade variation; to minimise waste movement; and to minimise movement by front end loaders. A staged approach to the implementation of computer systems based on linear programming optimisation is Proposed.

Social licence to operate is developed and kept through managing both operational impacts and the relationship between local community and company. However, CSIRO research has demonstrated that in determining how accepting community members are of a mining operation, relational factors, such as procedural fairness and trust, are much more important than operational impacts, such as impacts on employment and the environment (Moffat and Zhang, 2015). Companies seek to develop relational factors through their engagement with local community; such engagement has many aspects, including, initially identifying stakeholders and positioning the company as part of the local community (Lacey et al, in prep; Thomson and Boutlier, 2011). These relational factors involve the social identities of people living in the community. Social identities are a part of people that shape their beliefs, based on their connections with various groups in their lives (Hogg et al, 2004).An engagement process, intentionally or not, inevitably interacts with the social identities of stakeholders (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). For example, traditionally, at the very beginning of engagement processes, community members are assigned to categories using conventional stakeholder mapping and categorisation methods, often based on assumptions about stakeholders’ interests, which equates to assumptions about stakeholders’ social identities (Colvin, Witt and Lacey, 2016; International Council on Mining and Metals, 2012). Yet, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether such categories reflect the social identities of stakeholders and if there is a bearing on relational factors, including, the perceived fairness of consultations and trust in mining companies (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). Also at this time, companies commonly seek to create a presence in communities, for example, joining Chambers of Commerce and participating alongside community members. Again, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether community members and companies identifying with the same overarching group and thus sharing aspects of social identity, influences relational factors (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). In this study, we examined the effects of changing aspects of social identity by changing how stakeholders were identified and companies were positioned, on how stakeholders’ perceived a new mining operation, specifically how they perceived the procedural fairness of the proposed consultation process and trusted the company, two factors that underlie a company’s social licence to operate.CITATION:Carr-Cornish, S and Moffat, K, 2016. Multi-sensor fusion visual perception technology significantly enhances visual perception capabilities in complex and harsh environments by combining visual data from different sensors. This technology is especially useful for scenarios where traditional single visible light sensors, such as standard cameras, struggle due to poor lighting, adverse visual conditions, or other visual obstructions. In environments with low light, smoke, or dust, the performance of conventional visible light sensors degrades, limiting their application. By integrating data from various sensors like radar, infrared thermal imaging, and others, multi-sensor fusion technology provides a more comprehensive and complementary visual solution. This fusion not only enhances the robustness of visual systems but also greatly expands their potential applications in fields like visual surveillance. In recent years, deep learning methods have become the mainstream technology for addressing multi-sensor fusion issues, demonstrating significant advantages in adaptive feature selection compared to traditional machine learning methods. However, deep learning-based multi-sensor fusion algorithms still face several challenges. The design of network structures is often redundant, lacking effective screening of useful components within multimodal information. Mainstream fusion algorithms focus excessively on improving display effects without adequately considering the needs of downstream applications and tasks. Existing fusion perception algorithms are generally designed for open visual scenes and lack targeted design for complex visual degradation factors present in tunnel environments of mines. Current deep learning methods for designing multi-sensor fusion networks heavily rely on manual experience to create fusion modules. This reliance increases the complexity of network design and can lead to redundancy. Redundant network modules are difficult to identify in end-to-end learning tasks at this stage, significantly slowing down network inference and potentially interfering with the output of fusion perception. Additionally, training these fusion modules typically requires large amounts of well-annotated multimodal data, further increasing implementation difficulty and cost. For instance, the fusion network design proposed by Li and Wu (2018) focuses on extracting multimodal fusion features, while Zhao et al (2020) introduced a feature decomposition mechanism in the feature fusion and extraction modules. Researchers like Zhang and Ma (2021), Xu et al (2020), and Liu et al (2017) have attempted to improve network structures through dense cascades and the introduction of residual connections. Although these methods have improved the handling of multimodal information to some extent, they still face limitations in distinguishing between useful and redundant information, with redundancy persisting in network designs. Ideally, the design of fusion networks should be more intelligent, guiding network structure design heuristically based on the importance of different modal information for the current task. This would reduce information redundancy and network weights, requiring the development of new algorithms or frameworks capable of automatically identifying and optimising fusion strategies, thereby reducing dependence on manual experience while improving fusion efficiency and network performance. Underground mining of gold-silver bearing quartz lodes was carried out in the great mines at Martha Hill, Waihi over 70 years from 1882 until 1952. Shafts and stopes reached a total depth of 600 m on 16 levels, with workings extending laterally some 1.6 km, and as new reefs were discovered the workings extended beneath parts of the township. Over their long life the mines produced 1217 tonnes of gold-silver bullion from processing 12.2 million tonnes of mined ore. In the early-1980s drilling proved large reserves of gold and silver ore remaining in stock-work zones between the previously mined lodes. This led to a new era of mining at Waihi with the opening of the Martha Hill open pit in 1988. A series of three sink holes have formed above unfilled stopes of the Royal lode. In 1999 a sudden collapse crater 40 m in diameter occurred near an occupied part of Waihi, placing in danger several houses and a busy street. This crater formed close to a similar crater that occurred in 1961. The 1999 collapse resulted in subsurface investigations and risk assessment studies being commissioned by the local Hauraki District Council. However, a further 50 m diameter collapse crater in December 2001 formed in a residential area, swallowing and wrecking an occupied house, fortunately without injuring its five occupants. Two other houses were perched on the crater rim. The 2001 collapse led to an acceleration of the work being carried out by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd. (GNS) to identify the extent of the old underground workings at Waihi. For the risk assessment detailed rock mechanics analyses were made to consider the stability of the underground mine stopes, in terms of the stope back, hangingwall, footwall and crown pillar failure mechanisms, as well as void migration. The collapse crater areas were analysed using using several methods, including analysis to simulate the probability of void migration from unfilled stopes to the surface using the @Risk program. The analyses show that in the cases of the actual collapse craters, the voids have a high probability of migrating to the surface, thus providing a method of testing the void migration modelling. Modelling analysis applied to the remaining stopes of the old underground mines show there are further areas where void migration from unfilled stopes has a high, medium and low probability of reaching the surface as a collapse crater. The locations of these probabilistic hazard zones were outlined using the @Risk modelling and deterministically by using the dimensions of the historical collapses applied along the length of the stopes. Consideration of the æincubation periodÆ (the time interval between the cessation of mining and the occurrence of collapse) and comparisons with mine subsidence histories overseas, indicates that further collapses are likely to occur over the next 50 years. Risk assessment estimates made using property values and occupancy levels within the three hazard zones, were compared with Societal and Individual Risk criteria. Results indicate that safety within the high and medium zones may be unacceptable.

In recent years substantial advances have been made in the field of geomechanics. Staff at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) are keen to see that such advances continue and that the mining industry in Australia can take full advantage of such developments in a timely manner. WASM views mining geomechanics in its broadest sense, as being concerned with the characterisation of the physical properties and the behaviour of earth materials (soil, rock and water) and openings as mining proceeds. Aspects such as, soil and rock improvement techniques for difficult site conditions and the rock breaking processes, are also considered to be an integral part of mining geomechanics. This paper indicates the inter-relationships between the various areas within the field of geomechanics and the strong reliance of all of these areas on site specific engineering geology.

The ability of the Australian minerals industry to successfully manage the changes and challenges that face it in the 21st century depends ultimately on the quality of its human resources. Mining engineers have a vital role in this regard. The education and training that universities are currently giving to mining engineers is under challenge and needs to be reassessed in the light of industry directions for the 21st century. At one extreme is a push for a `finished product' graduate, up and running in `the flavour of the month' issues. At the other extreme are moves to reduce face-to-face university teaching hours and return to the time honoured university concept of `reading' for a degree. The lessons of Mourn make it apparent that neither approach is appropriate to the industry's future needs (Windridge, 1996). Basic knowledge gets rusty with time and new skills need to be learned. In order to conduct mining operations safely, productively and competitively, mining engineers must now accept the need to be prepared for continuing professional development as a career imperative. The concept of being professionally or statutorily qualified for life is no longer valid. This calls into question the purpose, content, structure and mode of delivery of university courses, all of which need to engender the principle and facilitate the cause of continuing professional development. This paper presents a model which aims to deliver a quality assured university education for mining engineers for the 21st century at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional level. The model extends beyond traditional university boundaries to match industry requirements to international best practice. It is based on collaborative alliances and innovative presentation modes which will provide industry access to undergraduate and postgraduate course elements presented by a broad range of national and international academic and industry authorities. It offers the prospect for preserving the best of university ideals in higher education, for developing and maintaining programs of direct relevance to industry needs and for a structured involvement in the continuing professional development of mining engineers.

The successful implementation of sublevel caving (SLC) at Ridgeway Gold Mine (Ridgeway) requires the technical aspects of caving and flow behaviour to be understood. Cave propagation must be controlled and continuous to allow safe extraction of ore below. The understanding and use of processes to manage granular flow behaviour are also required to ensure economic metal resource recovery. Caving and flow technologies are thus critical to the economic viability of the application of the SLC mining technique to Ridgeway Gold Mine. At the time the Ridgeway SLC design was approved there were significant technical uncertainties associated with cave mining methods, including the SLC mining method in competent rock masses. This was in spite of the fact that caving is a relatively low cost mining method. Unique features generating technical risks at Ridgeway include: the fact that the orebody is blind (550 m below surface); highly competent cap rock (RMR >50); and high aspect ratio (height to width ratio of 3:1). Due to the presence of these unique features Ridgeway is considered to be beyond the current state-of-the-art in SLC mining technologies. The success of the technique at Ridgeway to date has indicated that blind SLC mines in strong rock mass can be operated safely and productively, if the technical risks are understood and properly managed. The risk management process was defined by the use of a formalise process to identify and assess the risks to the mine. The major mining related risks were formalised into Major Hazard Management Plans (MHMP) which contained a description of the risk, early triggers indicating the creation of a hazard and a series of agreed responses to be automatically initiated in the event of each trigger occurring. This paper outlines the following with respect to the critical technology areas of caving and flow: international industry, state-of-the-art technology; gaps in the application of this technology; the application of risk management, new processes developed at Ridgeway to bridge these gaps, including issues encountered; and trials and experimentation conducted to develop the new processes.

The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. The samples studied in this paper were derived from the iron oxide facies of iron formations (IFs) of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, south-eastern Brazil. The rich-iron oxide varieties of the IFs can be regarded as Fe-O systems because they consist predominantly of aggregates of haematite and magnetite crystals. The study was based on carefully selected samples in which magnetite crystals occur as isolated large crystals set in a matrix of haematite grains. Optical microscopy and an electron microscope equipped with an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system were used to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic relationships involved in the phase transformation between magnetite and haematite. The magnetite crystals in the IF samples are partially transformed to haematite and this process is also known as martitisation. This transformation occurs along the crystallographic planes {111} of the magnetite producing a characteristic triangular pattern of interlocking lamellae of transformed haematite crystals that are oriented parallel to octahedral plane {111}. This new generation of haematite is referred to martite because of the martitisation process. EBSD analyses show that the magnetite and the new haematite crystals, martite, share crystallographic planes of highest atomic density, eg {111} and (0001), respectively, possibly due to the ccp and hcp atomic arrangement of the two crystals. Stereographic projections of these two planes therefore coincide when the maxima of their poles are plotted. However, the crystallographic orientation of the haematite crystals in the matrix shows maxima of (0001) poles that do not coincide with those of {111} planes of magnetite. Consequently, it is concluded that the direct transformation to haematite crystals retains the crystallographic orientation memory of the former magnetite crystals, possibly due to the similar manner whereby their atoms are packed together in the crystal structures. On the other hand, no such relationships are observed between magnetite and haematite crystal in matrix. This suggests that haematite grains in the matrix may have been formed by other processes rather than those involved in the iron oxide transformation observed within the magnetite grains.

There exist several legislative provisions in N.S.W. which work together to control surface subsidence due to extraction of coal by underground methods. The important ones are the Coal Mining Act, Coal Mines Regulation Act, Mine Subsidence Compensation Act and Dams Safety Act. In addition, there are guidelines laid down by the Chief Inspector of Coal Mines for mining under and in the vicinity of tidal waters and the ocean. There are also conditions of coal mining leases and conditions of approvals given to undertake various methods of mining which stipulate further controls. The legislative provisions and relative controls are designed to minimise surface damage, ensure safety , of major public utilities, control- surface land use and compensate damage caused by subsidence as a result of coal mining operations. They aim at balanced and responsible development of our valuable coal resources consistent with adequate safeguards to surface improvements and natural features. The paper discusses in detail these legislative provisions and the mechanics of their operation with a view to emphasising the fact that underground coal mining operations are undertaken responsibly and in a planned and rational manner for the overall benefit of the community. Further, the paper aims to demonstrate the need for legislative measures and conditioning of mining operations to keep abreast of developments in the knowledge and skills of mining and subsidence engineers and continuing improvements in mining technologies. Likewise there is a need on the part of engineers and those associated with introduction of new technologies to appreciate the requirements and existence of legislative and other measures having a direct or indirect association with surface subsidence as a result of coal mining operation.

This paper aims to provide some' new and original thoughts on tungsten carbide drill-bits and describe practices and performances, some of which are unique and most of which have not previously been described. Many theoretical and descriptive papers and articles on carbide bits have appeared during the last few years, and in the big majority conclusions such as these were made. These results are marked by premature failure of the bits, or The full or economic life of the bit is seldom reached due to the premature failure of the insert. Unfortunately those conclusions are seldom accompanied by the reasons for premature failure. In the few cases where reasons for failure have been advanced, very little, originality has been shown. The reasons usually given are that the failures are due to bad operators, bad workmanship, faulty steel or unsuitable machines, but it has been shown at Mount Isa that the chief reason for poor performnce is bad design.The first question asked will be, "What is wrong with the design of most bits?" and the answer'is, "The size of' the inserts". There may be many other small faults iiI different types of bit but Mount Isa experience indicates that the size of the insert is the most important factor influencing pit life. Under normal conditions it has been found, that there is a minimum size of insert that will give satisfactory performance, and this minimum is 5/16 in width and ? in. depth at the shoulder. A big majority of the bits at presentavailable in Australia do not satisfy these requirements.

Since the earliest recorded prospecting of the 1860's mineral exploration and mining in Fiordland has been discouraged by the formidable physical difficulties presented by its isolation, extremely rugged relief, treacherous coastal waters and generally unfavourable weather conditions. Government assistance was often sought by the miners and prospectors but little, if any, support or encouragement was received after the initial period. During the 1840's decorative marble was quarried at Caswell and Dusky Sounds. A prospector discovered and attempted to mine copper sulphides to the north of Dusky Sound (Parks Mineral Beds) and near Mt Solitary. A small Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au bearing quartz reef was discovered and driven on in the granite coast line of Preservation Inlet (Bradshaws Reef) and the ore roasted on site. Alluvial and quartz lode gold was discovered at Preservation Inlet in the 1890's and led to the recorded recovery of 11 000 oz of mainly lode gold. Falloff in grades with depth, thinning and splitting of the reefs and the high mining costs at this location led to a virtual abandonment of the field by 1906. In the late 1950's and early 1960's the geology of Fiordland was mapped by the Geological Survey at 1:250 000 scale, but field work was largely confined to the shore lines of the coast and fiords. In view of the physical difficulties it is not surprising that mineral exploration and mining up to 1970 was limited to the scant attention outlined above.

Optimisation and sensitivity analysis of final pit limits is now an accepted procedure for open pit planning studies. Tools to assist the design engineer in an underground metalliferous mine to make optimal choices for the selection of major development, stope geometry and cut-off grade analysis have not been available. The engineer has had to rely on experience and a limited analysis of design alternatives. A new tool called the `floating stope' has been developed to define the optimal (boundary) limit for material that can be economically extracted by underground stoping methods. The method is analogous to the `floating cone' method of open pit optimisation. The geology and mineralisation are modelled as a regular or subcell block model. Included in the model are structural and geotechnical features, and any previously mined out areas. Inputs to the procedure include the minimum stope dimensions, cut-off grade, stope head grade, and the way in which dilution is to be calculated. The optimisation procedure can be directed to maximise ore tonnes, grade, contained metal or the economic (dollar) value of material mined. The procedure can be applied at each stage of mine evaluation and design to assist with preliminary resource appraisal, selection of stoping methods, and detailed mine design. As with open pit optimisation procedures, manual intervention by an experienced engineer is required to produce practical and detailed designs. This practical design should follow the optimised design as closely as possible. The paper outlines the algorithms used in the definition of the stope envelope, and describes the analysis and results of several case studies where the optimisation procedure has been applied.

Self-potential anomalies are generated by fluid pressure gradient, by temperature gradient or by chemical gradient. On the basis of this principle, a new technique is proposed to locate the fire source of spontaneous combustion of coal by the self-potential method. In order to investigate whether this method can be applied to locate the spontaneous combustion of coal in practice, surveys of self-potential distributions were undertaken in a coal waste pile undergoing spontaneous combustion. The results showed that there is a negative centre of the electrical potential distribution in the measurement area. The potential in this centre is about 140 mV lower than that in the surrounding area. Moreover, the negative centre of electrical potential distribution almost overlaps with the high temperature zone. Therefore, it is concluded that it is possible to locate the heat source by the measurement of self-potential distribution.

Disastrous earthquakes are a reality on the Australiancontinent. Unfortunately it has taken the fatal 1989 New-castle earthquake to demonstrate to all Australians that we do not reside on a "stable continent". While the world accepts the potential of plate tectonics and its associated plate margin earthquakes, particularly around the active Pacific Rim, the realisation of devastating intra-plate, or continental, earthquakes is only now beginning to take effect. The 1989 Newcastle earthquake provides many lessons on which to further fundamental earthquake research and the applications to the future welfare of human civilisation. To mitigate the earthquake hazard in relation to the devastation to life, property and industry, research must be undertaken with the resulting informa-tion to be included in the nation's disaster management programs. The earthquake hazard is everpresent in east-ern Australia and the major step in its quantification is a more realistic determination of earthquake risk estimates through an integrated study of seismology, engineering, insurance and sociology.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF hatching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid hatching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically rccmer isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.
