"*This is an abstract only*Construction of geological models for kimberlites has historically largely been based on visual volcanic textures and features, with chemical data only collected on an ad-hoc basis depending on the level of perceived complexity observed in the geological data. The focus of this paper is a high-level view of the impact an initial absence (or lack) of relevant chemical data had on two kimberlite resource models as well as how the magnitude of the problem increased once the resource estimation process commenced (Stiefenhofer, 2013). The impact of ignoring chemical data on a project assessment where micro-diamond estimation techniques are employed, is also discussed. Resource estimates based on micro-diamond data are critically dependent on the use of the correct geological model since stationarity of the size frequency distribution is key to the generation of correct grade estimates. "The most commonly used method of thick coal seam extraction in Polish deep mines is multislice longwall (MSL). In MSL stability of goaf in the roof as a result of previous extraction in upper slice is a major geotechnical consideration that must be managed.This paper outlines the results of a wide range of investigations carried out in three longwalls that were in operation in a multislice system using caving with additional fly ash goaf stowing. The longwalls were operated by Katowicki Holding Weglowy SA (KHWSA) in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin of Poland.Examinations were completed on the properties of goaf at the roof of longwalls ie measurements of strength parameters of the goaf material by means of a borehole hydraulic penetrometer, determination of the goaf condition by means of a borehole endoscope and laboratory testing of the caved rock. In those days no one worried - there were plenty of other things to do. But in'these days it is different. Everyone worries- and. because there is so much worry, emotion has entered the picture. And, worse than that, capital is being made in political circles. People who were quite unaware, five years ago, that any problem existed, have now become experts on the subject, and shout to high heaven that something should be done - and yet they go on using the leaded high octane petrol they deplore so much. And even scientists, who should know better, adduce only such evidence as fits the argument in hand. And the Press is not without blame - some of its reportings is open to serious question, whatever may be the excellence of its motives. The point is made that one should know what one is talking about. And make sure that the evidence quoted is fact - and make sure too, that all the evidence is used, not only that which suita the argument.

Depending upon the probability one assigns to project go-ahead, up to $10 billion (1978 figures) could be required for resource based projects in Australia in the next decade. In the past major resource projects were readily financeable against sales contracts. In the future the complexities imposed by such matters as political risk, inflation, currency movements and environmental and other socio- economic considerations on project development costs and returns may require a different approach. This paper addresses itself to the ramifications of providing development finance for resource based projects in the future - and in particular examines such factors as project completion guarantees, sales contracts, protection against exchange rate fluctuations, interest rate structures and debt/equity ratios as each relates to the provision of finance. Recent research publications in extractive metallurgy were analysed for their stated and self-evident objectives. Over 100 different objectives (not specific to a metal or unit operation) were identified. These were divided into groups of economic, environmental, professional and fundamental significance. Comparisons were made of the objectives adopted in universities, industry and national research organisations. The most common primary and secondary objectives (by a large margin) were "to develop a new process (different chemistry)" and "to determine the effects of variables on a process" respectively. It was concluded that, overall, recent research has been dominated by commercial objectives. Objectives related to thermodynamics and kinetics have been the most common of the fundamental sort. Those related to professional methods in general, sensors and process dynamics, among others, have been largely neglected.

The Green Parrot and Reward stratabound silver-lead (copper-zinc) deposits are located in the eastern part of the Arunta Block. At Green Parrot, mineralisation is contained within a north-south striking lode horizon comprised of elongate lenses of massive garnet or calcsilicate-carbonate "lode rocks" with intercalated sericite-biotite schist and laminated biotite-feldspar schist. The "lode rocks" are increasingly calcareous to the west. The mineralisation is broadly zoned with an increase in lead content and decreases in copper and silver contents from east to west. The principal sulphide minerals are galena, sphalerite and bornite. The Reward deposit lies adjacent to a lens of massive garnet "lode rock" which is contained within garnetiferous sericite-quartz schist. Primary mineralisation consists of galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite. Both deposits are associated with a substantial thickening of the lode horizon which is narrow and discontinuous along strike from the Green Parrot and Reward deposits.

The laws of detonation wave velocity variation in propagation process along the charge under channel influence are investigated widely in this paper. The result is obtained by blasting experiments. Bore hole is simulated by plastic tube or steel pipe (with outer diameter 45 nun, inner diameter 40 or 41 mm). Blasting experiment is carried out with a cylindrical charge of 32 mm diameter. The author analyses the characteristics of energy distribution along the charge under above-mentioned conditions. Reasonable initiating position and initiating direction are also analysed. A double-direction initiating method which consists of several initiating charges is put forward. The blasting effect of this initiating method when used in underground mining is stated out.

Failure to replenish our mineral stocks will threaten man's economic and social well-being, and it is vital that future directions of metallogenic research are considered carefully to ensure that research funds are applied wisely to underwrite our future.Today we are witnessing the declining phase of the era of easy exploration. The rate of discovery of shallow orebodies is slowing. This is very evident for base-metal deposits but is becoming increasingly apparent for gold deposits. The easy exploration era was marked by a heavy reliance on exploration techniques capable of directly detecting mineralization. These include simple prospecting methods as well as a host of geochemical and geophysical procedures and tools that enable explorers to pin-point regions' of mineralization within the upper couple of hundred metres of the Earth's crust. Late Palaeozoic and Late Mesozoic phases of widespread overprinting have obliterated most of the primary magnetization signature of the Tasman Fold Belt. Palaeomagnetic programs of a regional extent offer best prospects for identification and interpretation of such secondary magnetizations and for isolation of any remaining primary magnetization. In 1983 the BMR initiated a regionally oriented palaeomagnetic study of the Tasman Fold Belt to obtain palaeomagnetic constraints on the tectogenesis of the fold belt. Particular attention is being paid to the analysis of possible differential movements between suspect or- tectonostratigraphic terranes within the Tasman Fold Belt and the respect to cratonic Australia. Work has concentrated so far on the Cowra Trough-Molong High region of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the New England region. Pilot sampling has been carried out in the Gympie region. In addition Palaeozoic sequences are being studied from the Amadeus Basin and the Ngalia Basin to refine the palaeomagnetic reference frame of cratonic Australia.

The Endeavor Mine, located to the north of Cobar, New South Wales, was purchased by CBH Resources Pty Ltd in September 2003. The operation has been producing lead and zinc concentrate continuously for over twenty-three years. In 2004, a water management program was instigated to improve the raw water use efficiency of the mining operation. The water management program involved the establishment of a Water Management Committee, a review and quantification of water use across the site, investigation and implementation of efficient water use practices, and workforce awareness training. The program has seen the amount of water used per tonne of ore milled reduced from an average of 1.08 kL/t in the March 2004 quarter, to 0.68 kL/t in the March 2005 quarter. This paper outlines the Endeavor Mine water management program and may serve as a model for other operations that are planning to improve their water use efficiency.

This paper intends to give an insight into what is often considered to be a poor relation of the mining industry but is in fact an integral part of any community. Aggregate production accounts for more than half of the world production of minerals by weight. In New Zealand production of aggregates runs at around five tonnes per capita per year, making it a significant industry. The industry in this country is dominated by smaller operations close to the market due to the widespread population and relative abundance of aggregate. The Logan Point quarry is one of the largest quarries in the South Island with an annual production of around 250 000 tonnes. The market is mainly based around roading and building in the Dunedin area with some higher quality specialist aggregates being used allover Otago. The quarry has been owned and operated by Palmer and Son Ltd for 106 years with a fifth generation family member the current quarry manager.

Owing to the 'creeps' and consequent movements in the mines, followed by the recent fire in the southern workings, the whole of the orebody above the 800 ft. level is now very much crushed and broken. The same applies to the hanging wall or overwall coutrny, which has subsided towards the workings, so that for some years past all development work within the lode has had to be carried out with extreme care.The continual but slow subsidence of the overburden into the stopes necessitates a periodical renewal of all gangways in the lode, and, as the subsidence amounts to as much as 60 ft. in places, these new gangways must necessarily pass through the mullock-filling of old stopes in addition to broken ore. They at times pass into the broken ground of the hanging-wall for some distance, where the orebody has widened underneath by the original folding and puckering.

The total systems model for underground oal mining planning and design is a set of omputer programs which encompasses a realis- ic reproduction of the interaction between he geological, environmental, equipment, meth- ds and the health and safety aspects of the ining plan. The total system includes nine ajor subsystems - Geology and Reserves, Meth- ne Generator, Roof Support, Subsidence, Pro- uction, Rail Haulage, Cost, Water Generator, nd Ventilation. The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Three specific areas for iodel application are in the measurement of system performance, the development of the '_ nterrelationships of the components of deep Wining process and the evaluation of new and Lnnovative mining technology.

Australis Mining N.L. operates a continuous mode carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold plant, processing sand and slime tailings from previous gold mining operations in the Norseman area. Plant design is that of conventional countercurrent contact between pregnant pulp and activated carbon. Gold desorption is achieved by the Zadra process using near boiling tempera- tures and atmospheric pressure. Process water is drawn from nearby Lake Cowan (saline). The plant operates at, or above, design specification of 400 dry tonnes per day. This paper describes the plant design and operating processes utilised in optimising throughput and gold recovery. TNTDnPTTnmTnM Favourable world gold prices and substantial reserves of sand and slime tailings prompted Australis Mining N.L. to construct a gold extraction plant during 1981. The projected plant throughput was set so as to complete treatment of available tailings over a three year period. Metal- lurgical tests indicated that, with a regrind facility satisfactory gold recovery could be achieved using a countercurrent CIP process. Reflecting the entry of Australis Mining N.L. into its first large scale treatment operation, the plant design emphasised simplicity but effectiveness of Operation.

THIS excellent volumetric method commends itself as a means of estimating the fineness of silver firstly, owing to the large number of possible impurities which do not affect its accuracy (these impurities include Cu-up to 70 % Au, Ph, Zn, Bi, Cd, Fe, Mn, Sb, and As); secondly, the method combines accuracy with speed. The above impurities are the only ones likely to be present in the B. H. A. S. Pty. Ltd. refined silver, and, with the exception of Cu and Au, the others, if present at all, would be well under 0.1 parts per 1000.Briefly stated, the method consists in the solution of the refined silver in HN03 , addition of ferric alum (indicator), and titration with an alkaline (either ammonium or potassium) thiocyanate solution until the brown ferric thiocyanate is formed, and gives a definite tint to the solution. The method is used at the Port Pirie smelters, and the outstanding feature in the method as there applied is the type of burette employed. This burette enables the operator to read 0.01 of a cc. with ease, whereas, with the ordinary burette fitted with a float, 0.05 of a cc., when a number of readings have to be taken, becomes very straining to the eyes. Moreover, waiting for the float to rise, and dislodging air bubbles from it, hinders rapid working.A description of the burette and fittings is appended with fig. 2. The effects of pH, temperature and the form of zinc used on the kinetics of cementation of cadmium from process liquors were investigated. Batch tests were conducted in stirred beakers, and the cementation reaction was found to be first order controlled. The rate controlling step was thought to be the diffusion of zinc ions from the zinc surface to the bulk solution. The pH was found to have a significant effect when using Prime Western zinc or zinc dust. High reaction rates were favoured at low pH levels and a minimum rate was observed at a pH level of approximately 5 to 5.5. The pH was found to have little effect when using high grade and cathode zinc. The reaction rates increased significantly with increasing temperature; a reaction temperature of 55¦C resulted in almost complete removal of zinc from solution. Effective cementation rates were only acheived with cathode zinc after pickling in acid. The nature and specification of zinc used determined the cementation rate of cadmium, resulting in the following order: 1. Zinc dust 2. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 3. High Grade zinc at pH 3 4. Pickled cathode zinc 5. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 6. High Grade zinc at pH 3 7. Cathode zinc "as received".
