Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. This paper aims to collate the metallurgical test work undertaken on the Barrytown mineral sands deposit. It is intended to serve as a summary of mineral dressing work undertaken by all interested parties up to the time of writing. Areas requiring further investigation are: in situ grades and recoveries of accessory minerals,the question of 'rank' of ilmenite within the deposit,flow sheet development for the recovery of gold and monazite, andcost analysis to investigate the relative worth of other minerals; notably rutile. Flow sheet development with respect to the Accessory Minerals cannot be accurately defined until the importance of each mineral in terms of grade, recovery and expected revenue is determined. To date, ilmenite and zircon flows are well documented. Further work is needed to quantify recovery's and flows of the other minerals; notably monazite, gold and rutile.

The Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is an extensive low angle semibrittle mineralised structure in the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand. The shear zone is located on the lower limb of a late metamorphic recumbent fold. Structural observations suggests that the shear zone initiated as a high strain mylonite zone and transgressed the ductile/brittle boundary (D4) later in its development. A surge zone at Round Hill is bounded to the south by a NE-SW striking lateral ramp which displaces the hanging wall shear (HWS) by 50 m. Oblique strike slip displacement during surge zone propagation created space for deposition of the sheeted vein complex or stockwork. Quartz recrystallisation in stockwork veins suggests that the veins were deformed in a ductile manner and implies that surge zone propagation may have occurred during late D3 deformation. A macroantiform was produced during D3/D4 shortening below the HWS. Over tightening of the antiform hinge created SW and NE-dipping ramp thrusts. Continued strike slip displacement along the lateral ramp rotated the antiform and associated ramps into a south plunging drag fold. Post-mineralisation (D5) structures include NE-dipping nonna! faults below the HWS and SW-dipping low angle imbricate thrusts above the HWS. The development of these structures was kinematically compatible with normal movement on the HMSZ and is related to mid Cretaceous break up of Gondwanaland in the SW Pacific.

The new structure of The Institute is vital as we move forward in times of globalisation, rationalism, increasing litigation, criminalisation of risk and increased focus on corporate governance. This address looks forward to ways The AusIMM and professionals of the future are positioning themselves for these and other challenges.

The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

Mineral concentrators often use process water that is very saline and/or hard. In this paper the effect of increasing concentrations of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the rheological properties of 70 wt% quartz suspensions (d5o - 10.6 ¦m) is reported. The apparent viscosity at 100 s t in 5 mol dm -3 sodium chloride solutions (approx. 300,000 ppm) was nearly 500 times the viscosity of water without salt or particles present. Part of the increase in viscosity is caused by aggregation (coagulation) of the suspension.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. The requirement of the residue for underground filling.Originally the conditions in this district varied mainly in the position of the mill, some mills having an elevated site with plenty of dumping space for the time being, whilst others had a flat site, and very little dumping space near at hand; but in most cases the residue discharged was in the form of filter-press cakes, suitable for conveying on belts, or in trucks, and stacking in a high clump; and, while a portion of the residue was used for underground filling, the dump was regarded as a valuable asset, to be re-treated later. In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

A 24,300 tonnes per year state of the art Silicon smelter is being constructed for Barrack Silicon Pty Ltd at Kemerton, 20 kilometres north of the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The plant is designed for the reduction of high purity quartzite lump to metallic silicon in two 27MVa Demag submerged arc electric furnaces. The primary reductant, a high purity charcoal, will be manufactured at the plant from locally sourced jarrah wood waste (Eucalyptus Marginata). When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Sea floor hydrothermal activity in the Okinawa Trough is considered a modern analog to ancient Kuroko-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Recent scientific drilling projects at active hydrothermal fields have enabled us to conduct comparative studies on hydrothermal clay minerals between ancient and modern systems. Zonal distributions of clay minerals below the sea floor of an active hydrothermal field have been revealed, which is represented by the distinctive assemblage of clay minerals. Zone 1 consists mainly of montmorillonite and sometimes of kaolinite; Zone 2 consists of chlorite and chlorite-smectite mixed-layer mineral; and Zone 3 is represented by the co-occurrence of illite and chlorite, from shallow to deep. This zonal distribution is likely to be in accordance with that reported previously for the Kuroko-type ore deposit. Similarities are also recognised in chemical compositions of illite and chlorite, which are both abundant clay minerals in the vicinity of the ore deposit. While illite would be formed by interaction with the hydrothermal ore fluid, the formation of Mg-rich chlorite is attributed to Mg metasomatism caused by the involvement of sea water. When xanthates or dithiophosphates are used as collectors in sulphide ore flotation, adsorbed species may be identified by gas chromatography of the volatile products formed during low temperature pyrolysis. For collector additions ,as low as 20 g/tonne of ore, pyrolysis of the flotation products usually gives' an olefin directly related to the particular xanthate or Aerofloat reagent used. The method is able to provide valuable qualitative and quantitative data relating to the extent of collector adsorption and the resulting changes in the hydrophilic or hydrophobic nature of the mineral surface.

he Wyalong goldfields were discovered in September, 1893, Messrs. Neeld and Sons, owners of the principal mine, being the pioneer prospectors. During the earliest days of the field the ore was sent to Barmedman, a distance of eighteen miles, for treatment at a battery there. The field rapidly increased in importance, and it was not long before a public battery was established on the spot. After some considerable quantity of ore was treated by this process, it became apparent that battery treatment was quite unsuitable for the richer ores, involving, as it did, considerable loss in the tailings. Recognition of this fact led to the erection, in 1895, of plants by the Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, owned by Mr. Walter Sully, for treatment by their processes; followed, at a later date, by Messrs. Neeld and Sons Chlorination Works. The Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, after a delay of twelve months in the erection of their plants, have since catered continuously up to the present time for the requirements of the field.Their plant consists of a No. 3 Gates' rock·breaker, a revolving dryer, a No. 5 Krupp mill, revolving roasting furnace with finishing hearth, two chlorination vats of 20 tons capacity each, "nine cyanide vats of 30 to 100 tons capacity, two Wheeler pans and three chlorine generators. The ores are purchased outright on assay at a fixed scale of charges, and treated by the owner of the works on his own account.

This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

In late 1989, first-pass reconnaissance exploration delineated a 4km x 6km geochem- ically anomalous area centred 10km WNW of Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands Province at 6¦13'S and 145047'E. The area, named the Basangka prospect, lies between 2 200 and 2 400m asl. Interest in the area was prompted by a 14ppm Au assay of a silica-pyrite breccia float sample taken near Henkai village. The prospect was defined after several acid-leached silica- pyrite breccia and comb textured quartz float samples returned assays above lppm Au and relatively high Ag. Very encouraging and anomalous Au values were obtained from panned concentrates, despite the absence of visible Au colours. Several pan concentrates returned greater than 1mg Au and it is believed that the Au occurs as inclusions within iron oxides which were originally pyrite. In this early stage of prospect exploration, any Au value above 0.lppm in- 150# fraction stream sediments is treated as anomalous. Rock chips, panned concentrates and -150# fraction geochemistry all vividly define the areas of interest at Basangka.

The poor flotation response of many coals has in the past been attributed to such factors as differences in rank, differences in degree of oxidation, differences in petrographic composition, or slime coatings. The present work shows that while all these factors undoubtedly influence flotation, the size distribution of the feed may override these. Evidence is presented which shows how this factor can lead to substantial losses of coarse coal (>250 µm)from a coal which would normally be considered amenable to flotation. Reasons for this loss of flotation response are suggested together with means of overcoming the problem.

The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national priorities.
