A regional geochemical exploration programme commenced in July 1983, based upon low-density sampling of lateritic duricrust over parts of the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. This resulted in recognition of an area significantly anomalous in chalcophile elements that progressively led to the discovery of the Johnston Range gold deposits in 1985. The deposits, on the Barlee 1:250,000 map sheet, occur in four mineralized zones, and production is expected to commence during 1988. The programme leading to the Johnston Range discoveries was a collaborative research/ applications study between the AGE Joint Venture (Greenbushes Ltd., St. Joe Minerals, and from 1985, Sons of Gwalia NL) and the CSIRO Laterite Geochemistry Research Group (Smith, 1987). It built upon a precursor project sponsored by Greenbushes Tin Ltd that commenced in 1980 and arose from an orientation laterite research project in the Greenbushes rare metal pegmatite district (Smith et at., 1987). Both were multi-commodity programmes and included the search for gold deposits. Basic methodologies for sampling and data interpretation have been described by Smith and Perdrix (1983) and Smith et at. (1984). Continuous geochemical coverage of designated parts of greenstone belts was sought using a triangular grid of 3-km or 1-km spacing, depending upon the expected prospectivity of the areas and the size and characteristics of the ore deposit targets. Edie Creek is located in the Morobe Goldfield about 17km by road from Wau in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Four distinct periods of mining development have occurred since discovery of rich alluvials in 1926. During the two years following discovery, individual expat-riate miners with gangs of native labourers mining rich alluvial gravels dominated the field. After the discov-ery of hardrock mineralisation in 1927, companies accumulated leases and devel-oped extensive underground mines and mechanical processing plants at Day Dawn Mine and Edie Creek/Karuka Mine between 1929 and 1942. After the Second World War, the underground operations were not re-opened, and mining activ-ities mostly concentrated on working alluvial and eluvial deposits. From 1962 onwards, Papua New Guinean miners became increasing producers as company activities declined. In 1990, Edie Creek Mining Company Pty Limited, a joint venture company involving Wau landowner groups commenced operations on New Guinea Goldfield's leases. It currently mines by open pit methods, rich quartz stringers and is invest-igating the open pitting of the Edie Creek/Karuka underground workings.This paper describes the mining and processing techniques employed during the various phases of develop-ment at Edie Creek in the past 70 years. Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927-28 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr. F. G. Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgurli mine, and Mr. Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preseryed from the Kalgurli mine by Mr. A. E. Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection o{ Mr. S. F. C. Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and "weissite" muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.

The Rosedale Outfall Project utilised an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) for only the second time in Auckland. Although the tunnel was excavated fully through East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), the downhill gradient along with some unexpected areas of extreme water posed some significant challenges during construction.The Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel project was commissioned in response to the growing needs of North Shore City, New Zealand. The outfall tunnel comprises a 3 km long segmentally lined tunnel and a 2.1 km buried marine pipeline, and discharges 2.7 km offshore. The capacity of the new outfall is 6 m3/s compared to the existing outfall capacity of 1 m3/s.Following previous project experience, and with the tunnel located along its full length in the bedrock weak sandstone/siltstone bedrock of the East Coast Bays Formation, tunnelling conditions were expected to be benign. However during construction six high inflow events were encountered, including a full face (3.4 m diameter) of Albany Conglomerate over a 48 m length of tunnel. This material comprised cobbles in an uncemented sand matrix, and inflows were recorded at over 25 L/s.This paper describes the design challenges on the project including the design of a steel fibre reinforced segmental lining for internal pressures. The specification of the machine is discussed including the modifications required to enhance the risk mitigation measures already in place. The ground conditions encountered are discussed and have improved the knowledge of the range of conditions that can be expected in Auckland.Despite the challenges presented during construction, excellent progress rates were achieved and the tunnelling was successfully completed ahead of program.

Best practice standards generally recommend assessment of the environmental and societal risks posed by tailings storage facilities, but they rarely specify how the analysis should be made. As a case study, this paper describes a safety assessment of the Zelazny Most tailings pond operated by the Hydrotechnical Unit of KGHM Polska Miedz SA in Poland. The complete assessment includes a failure mode effect criticality analysis (FMECA) that considers all conceivable failure modes, but this paper focuses on one key mode, the loss of stability during the planned raising of the crest above its current level. Reliability against static dam failure considers uncertainty on the safety factor in a limit equilibrium approach. The threat of dynamic (earthquake induced) instability is assessed by developing a model of future seismicity as a function of the mining plan and considering uncertainty on the induced permanent displacements along critical sliding surfaces. We quantify the additional level of protection against outflow provided by the beach using an event tree with expert-assigned probabilities. Continuous monitoring of the dam for premonitory signs of instability and a set of loss-prevention plans in the case of a spill provide additional layers of protection; their effectiveness is quantified by estimating the fraction of the population that could be evacuated as a function of warning time. The probabilistic analysis indicates that the safety targets are met and produces practical recommendations on how to maintain and improve the safety level while the dam crest is raised above its current level.CITATION:Van Dyck, J, Pytel, W, Veneziano, D, Snow, R and Zanoli, O, 2015. This paper presents an overview of a program PC-BC developed for application to the design and evaluation of block cave operations. Conventional mine planning software tools are not well suited to the evaluation of this type of deposit. The paper looks at the modelling approach as applied to a block cave mining project. The following steps are described:Initial preparation of data including block models, draw point footprint geometry and draw cone geometry. Computation of individual draw point reserves. Procedure for modelling of vertical mixing of material within each draw point and subsequent determination of the best height of draw for each draw point based upon an economic cut-off value. Smoothing of draw heights amongst neighbouring draw points to produce a realistic draw envelope. Mineable reserves within the envelope are then computed. Tools for preparation and evaluation of various production schedules. This includes definition of draw rates, and rates for commissioning new draw points. In an operating mine, the capture and analysis of daily draw tonnages is important. How PC-BC accommodates this is described as well as the processes for depleting the draw column reserves. In the 12 years since the program was first developed, it has been used on a number of projects for feasibility studies and operating mines. Some practical examples of the use of the program in these projects are presented. Finally, some commentary on the sensitivity of various parameters is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the overall footprint design.

The new law on Environmental Protection and Management (Republic of Indonesia Law 32 of 2009) was passed by the Indonesian parliament in September 2009. This law aims to protect Indonesia's rapidly degrading environment by providing tougher provisions for both polluters and law enforcers. In doing so, the law introduces a number of new constraints and potential business risks that will affect all companies in Indonesia, particularly mining companies. Some of the newly introduced concepts follow.   Mining companies will now require an environmental license, issued by the Minister of Environment or local counterparts. This license is a prerequisite for all other business and operational permits. The Minister can revoke the environmental license at any time in case of an environmental incident or dispute. Mining companies may be exposed to additional environmental taxes and bonds besides already existing reclamation and mine closure bonds.   There is an increased risk of environmental lawsuits, due to more stringent controls on one side and greater protection for NGOs on the other side who make claims, false or true, against the company. Company executives and managers can be sued and they will be held accountable if environmental degradation has indeed occurred due to the company's activities.   Companies may face increased liabilities due to a change in the definition of contamination. The new definition is more stringent (and on occasion may prove too stringent to be practical); it also provides little room for flexibility in its application.   As implementing regulations are prepared over the coming two to three years, mining companies will need to adjust to the new law. A proactive approach is needed to minimise risk. Recommended actions include: upgrading existing environmental impact assessments to a higher standard; conducting baseline studies and thoroughly documenting environmental conditions on a regular basis; closely tracking regulatory changes, especially the forthcoming implementing regulations on the new environmental law; and regularly engaging key government and community stakeholders on environmental issues.

Mill operating teams are expected to engage in a perpetual quest for process improvement – pushing the boundaries of practical process limits and testing new technology to achieve the next step-change in plant performance. Often the barrier to improvement lies in gaining management approval for process changes.Getting approval for investment in novel technology carries an added degree of difficulty, particularly in risk-averse operations, when it challenges conventional wisdom. A case in point is a new technology for controlling variability in slurry distribution. There is a widely held view that less-than-specified classification efficiency and spraying and roping of individual units in a hydrocyclone cluster, must be accepted as unavoidable. That these are wholly correctable deficiencies resulting from unequal loading of the individual units seems a bold claim. Wouldn’t the high turbulence of pumped slurries overcome all potential for segregation of solids? This paper discusses how the task of developing confidence in a new technology can be approached by a combination of physical modelling at small scale, and full-scale operating experience. Proving efficacy then leads to the next task: demonstrating value. Again, the particular technology serves as an example that could be of value to others developing relatively low-cost technologies. A high-pay-off as an investment may be achieved with improvements in metallurgical performance that are small in relation to normal process variations. This has led to an exploration of how process simulation modelling could be used, in conjunction with production data, to provide a benchmark for the expected change, which could be expressed in monetary terms.The next goal, which is currently being achieved in operating plants, is to realise the greater value now available through the optimisation of cyclone configuration, which becomes practical when the confounding effects of cluster instability are removed through equal loading.CITATION:Doig, S G, Algie, S H, Lovatt, I A and Knoblauch, E J, 2018. Heavy mineral sand exploration drilling prior to the 1970s generally utilised open hole auger and air-blast type drilling. However, mining reconciliations were poor and limitations on accuracy and precision of drilling results were severe.Working with the exploration companies, Wallis Drilling principals designed various systems, including what was termed the ‘Eneabba System’ and then the ‘Capel Twin-Tube System’. Eventually the company with its improvements developed and patented the Aircore Drilling System.Aircore drilling has subsequently become recognised as an excellent drilling system for exploration and mine-sample drilling that gives good precision and accuracy in sampling both above and below water. Its use has also been extended to many other commodities and is used in a number of overseas countries.This paper documents anecdotally the development of the system, identifying problems encountered during the times it was evolving and of the means to overcome the problems as being the documentation of the story by the inventors and developers in Wallis Drilling Company. Aircore drilling system is a Western Australian technological development owing its existence to the designing and incorporation of a number of discrete improvements along the way and recognises the tenacity and inventiveness of all who contributed to the system, in both Wallis and also in a number of companies that gave the impetus to succeed.

Using new technology to create optimised infill drill programs in underground or open pit settings, it is possible to quantify the value of a drill program. The computer designed programs are optimised to uplift the most amount of resource possible into the specified resource classification, while honouring geological, spatial, equipment and budgetary constraints. When designing ‘by hand’ balancing all these factors is a time-consuming effort with no real way to determine metrics on ‘how good’ a program will be. The optimisation considers many factors allowing geologists to apply critical thinking and domain knowledge to constrain the optimisation, letting the computer do the heavy lifting of determining hole placement. Once programs have been created, they can be integrated into a production schedule. This is a critical step in determining the correct sequencing and balancing of resource availability and seeing how a program will interoperate with other tasks in the mine. For example, if drill drives are a requirement for part of the program, will they be developed in a time frame that is useful for the goals of the program? Do we risk drilling infill holes too late to add value? Do we put production at risk by not classifying parts of the model ahead of time, thus adding to uncertainty? Using software to assist with optimising and scheduling of drilling is a useful technique to save the geologists from the mundanity of manually designing drill programs and puts metrics around the effectiveness of a program and has the potential to add quantifiable value to a program. Examples will be presented that demonstrate the effective use of drill hole optimisation, comparing manual designs with optimised designs, as well as the examples that show the effective use of scheduling.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.

Digital computer based control systems are used to implement control and monitoring over most unit operations in Mount Isa Mines Limited lead-zinc concentrator and copper concentrator. Implementation has been gradually devel- oped and expanded since the first process computer installation in 1969. Operations currently using high level control logic include crushing, grinding, on-stream analysis of flotation products, flotation reagent additions, and tailings thickening. Details of gains in metallurgical efficiency for each system are considered.

The Wattle Dam gold mine, located near Kambalda in the Goldfi elds region of Western Australia has recently progressed to an underground operation and is now believed to be Australia's highest grade operating gold mine. At end of March 2010, the deposit had reserves of 132 000 t @ 20.8 g/t for 88 000 oz and by the end of June 2010 had produced 110 000 oz from open-pit and underground mining. The Wattle Dam main lode is characterised by very coarse gold mineralisation. Gold occurs as cm to decimetre fracture fi ll veinlets, shear surface coatings and erratic fl akey clusters. The gold has no quartz or silica association and lacks adjacent low-grade mineralisation or alteration assemblage. Geologically it appears atypical of Archaean lode gold deposits and may represent an extreme end member of the type. Definition of the lode is largely dependent on effective geological identification of the host lode zone and an understanding of the erratic distribution and grade behaviour of a high-nugget, coarse gold deposit. Dependence on assay data to defi ne the lode zone would result in the deposit being mined incorrectly and much of the deposit being left unexploited. This paper discusses the geology, coarse gold characteristics and defi nition methods which are used to successfully defi ne and mine the deposit.

Samples have been taken from a two-stage industrial gold roaster treating a pyrite/pyrthotite/arsenopyrite concentrate, in order to describe the mineral- ogy, composition and surface area of the calcines. Sulfides oxidised to produce a porous magnetite in the first stage and a porous hematite in the second, pyrite predominantly roasted via a pyrrhotite intermediate. Sulfur was eliminated in both the first and second stages whereas arsenic was eliminated in the first but retained in the second, partly as rims on hematite particles. The finer sized particles from the cyclones and electrostatic precipitator, whilst having the greatest surface area, were the most refractory with respect to gold solubilization, probably as a result of incomplete decomposition (through short-circuiting) in the first stage, and through a combination of factors such as overheating and entrapment of sub-micro- scopic gold in the second stage.

The objective of this paper is to assess the accuracy and applicability of recent state-of-art methods such as the machine learning algorithms (MLA) for mineral resource estimation. Conventional methods such as geostatistics have been predominantly used in the mining industry for this purpose with varying success. Recent advances in the use of MLA have provided a fresh approach to obtain improved accuracy in the estimation of mineral resources. Two MLA methods: the neural network (NN) and the support vector machine (SVM) have been used to estimate a polymetallic ore deposit in Alaska.The general characteristic of SVM and NN emphasises the fact that they can approximate any multivariate non-linear relation among variables. Although neural network models are able to capture the nonlinear spatial relationships that may be present in the data, they are usually difficult to optimise under sparse data settings. Of the various NN alternatives, despite their effectiveness, the model selection and estimation process is typically difficult as it involves solving complex integration and optimisation of parameters. In support vector modelling (SVM), estimating of parameters involves optimisation of a convex cost function. The working principle of SVM makes it robust against noisy and extreme value data. At the same time, it can capture the spatial distribution of ore grade more effectively with careful modelling and selection of SVM parameters.The outcome of the MLA methods were compared to those of the geostatistical ordinary kriging (OK) application to study their generalisation ability. The comparison was made using the following goodness of fit criteria: mean-squared error; mean absolute error; mean error; and coefficient of determination. The results indicated that the MLA methods may improve the predictability of ore deposits and thereby reduce the inherent risk in mineral resource estimation.

From E to W the Gympie Province comprises 6 distinct units which can be evaluated as suspect or exotic terranes.

The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

Regular monitoring of surface deformation over mine sites is important for providing updated information to managers regarding geotechnical risks related to ground instabilities. This is particularly true in cases where unexpected or accelerating movement patterns are observed, as these trends may have implications related to worker safety within active mining environments, as well as continuity of ongoing operations. InSAR is an active remote sensing technique that uses radar satellite imagery to precisely measure ground movement. This technology has started to become a standard tool for monitoring surface stability in many different sectors, including underground and open pit/cut mining applications. In recent years the launch of satellites that collect radar imagery on a more frequent basis, coupled with advances in InSAR processing techniques, has improved both the extent to which movement patterns typical of mining operations can be characterized and the temporal scale on which results can be reported to geotechnical departments. As a result of these developments, InSAR monitoring can now better meet the operational needs of mine sites. An overview of the more recently launched satellites that have a particular relevance to the monitoring of mines is provided, along with an explanation of the InSAR tools that are the most valuable to mine managers and geotechnical engineers. First, broad differences between high resolution X-band imagery and low resolution (but freely available) Sentinel imagery are discussed. Second, the various InSAR tools and their particular applications for different types of mine sites and operations are covered, which include fast delivery deformation maps for short-term reporting, multi-interferometric algorithms for longer-term analyses and rapid movement tracking (RMT) for emergency monitoring or high-risk situations. The ability of the technology to resolve 2D and 3D movement is also touched upon. Practical examples of InSAR application over a variety of mine sites will be presented, as well as surrounding hazards including landslides, to illustrate how InSAR can help provide geotechnical engineers with a picture of surface stability over the full mine site and surrounding areas to help manage risk.
