During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. Drilling and sampling are responsible for most of the costs during mineral exploration, especially in multi-elements and polymetallic deposits, such as iron, manganese and bauxite deposits. On these deposits, often it is necessary to estimate multiple attributes at several granulometric fractions, ie distinct particle sizes. This paper investigates the effect of sampling at a close spacing grid only the head grades for the multiple chemical species in iron ore deposits. The remaining required data at the various grain sizes are sampled at a sparse grid. The derived geological model is checked for precision and accuracy comparing the output obtained against a model obtained using a complete isotopic data set including head grades and chemical analysis at each granulometric fraction analysed at all sampled positions. Among the several tested alternatives, the best procedure for dealing with the posed problem involved utilising the correlation coefficients between the grades at distinct fractions to obtain an isotopic database prior to interpolation. Cokriging was the method used, based on the intrinsic coregionalisation model. Estimates were obtained with the quality needed for the proposal of the study. Results showed that at least 50 per cent of the blocks were estimated with errors less than ten per cent relative to the grades obtained at the reference model, using only 15 per cent of the granulochemical data employed to obtain the reference model. The methodology also preserved the correlations between the attributes in their several granulometric fractions on the estimated model.

The Hishikari gold deposit, discovered by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, has become a giant class epithermal gold deposit with the highest grade of gold yet recorded in the world through detailed exploration and development by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The exploration strategy involved a regional approach combining geological and gravity surveys over a 900 km2 area which had historically produced over 120 t of gold. These surveys were carried out to grasp the common geologic features of epithermal gold deposits in the survey area. A genetic model for epithermal gold deposits in the area under regional survey was also considered based on detailed research of the Kushikino epithermal gold deposit which was in operation at that time. This model was applied to the targeted areas, and important relationships between mineralization, host lithology, intensive propylitic alteration and gravity highs became apparent. The Hishikari block was selected in this way and bonanza gold was discovered during drilling. Since the development of the Hishikari mine, information useful for further exploration for the same type of deposit has been accumulated.

The Cayeli volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit is located in Black Sea region of Turkey. Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri (CBI) was formed as a joint venture between Inmet (Canada) and Eti Holding (Turkey). CBI is processing complex copper/zinc sulphide ores. The Cayeli concentrator was commissioned in 1994, with a design capacity of 600 000 tonnes/year. The grinding circuit was a classical rod mill/ball mill combination. The rod mill was converted to a primary ball mill in May 1997. The reasons for conversion were to use mill power more efficiently and eliminate feed interruptions during rod charging. The grinding circuit now has a primary ball mill in open circuit, and a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Classification was originally done in two stages with hydrocyclones. Both mill discharges were combined and pumped to a primary cyclopack having two, 500 mm diameter cyclones. Primary cyclone overflow was pumped to a secondary cyclopack for further classification. The secondary cyclopack had ten, 200 mm cyclones. Both unit underflows were fed to a secondary ball mill by gravity. The secondary cyclone overflow, typically 62-64 per cent passing 36 ¦m, at around 42 per cent solids (w/w) was fed to flotation circuit. In order to increase circuit capacity to 1 000 000 tonnes/year and to improve control over the grinding circuit, it was decided to convert the classification circuit from two stage to one stage. For this purpose, six Warman Cavex cyclones having 400 mm diameter were installed. Now, the combined primary and secondary ball mill discharge was classified in single stage with the Warman cyclones in closed circuit with the secondary ball mill. The cyclone overflow goes directly to the copper rougher circuit as flotation feed. The grinding circuit is producing a flotation feed of 70 per cent passing 36 ¦m. The change over to single stage classification at Cayeli was successful. A mill throughput of 1 000 000 tonne/year is being achieved with better control over classification, and improved grind size. Results and comparison between the two classification circuits are presented in the paper.

Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

The tailing retreatment project rated at 10 000 t/day commenced operations in October 1982. The operation consists of dredging, feed preparation, cyanide leaching and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery followed by Zadra atmospheric stripping and electrowinning. For the first two years the operation was adversely affected by excessive cyanide consumption and low gold extraction. Investigations demonstrated that the very fine, or slime, fraction of the tailing was the dominant consumer of cyanide and dissolved oxygen. The plant flowsheet was subsequently modified by inclusion of 80 - 100 mm dia. cyclones for slimes separation and a 31 m dia. thickener for water recovery. Treatment of deslimed feed in the CIP plant has reduced sodium cyanide consumption from an average 1.85 kg/t to 1.15 kg/t. The reduced oxygen consumption by the CIP plant feed has resulted in higher dissolved oxygen levels, frequently reaching supersaturation after 4 to 5 h contact time. This has allowed much improved gold extraction from the existing CIP plant capacity. Gold extraction from the mixed pyritic siliceous tailing has improved from an average U prior to desliming to a current 57%. Investigations are continuing on the recovery of gold from the discarded slimes.

Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores from the Upper Group 2 (UG2) reef often contain significant concentrations of chromite which can potentially be upgraded to produce a saleable product. A common approach is to implement gravity separation on the PGM flotation circuit tailings. However, where the particle size range of interest is broad and the lower size limit ultra-fine, the challenge is how to maximise the recovery at a saleable product grade without compromising throughput. This study was concerned with the performance of a REFLUX™ Classifier for beneficiation of a PGM bearing chromite ore and the benefits of size classification. The sample had a nominal top size of 0.5 mm and was processed over the complete size range and in two discrete size classes following classification at 106 µm. The primary goal was to produce a concentrate exceeding 40 wt. per cent Cr2O3, ideally approaching 42 wt. per cent Cr2O3, with minimal PGM losses above 106 µm. A major challenge was to process at the required solids throughput in a single stage with the feed pulp density constrained to a nominal upper limit of 30 wt. per cent solids. It was found that varying the controller density set point of the REFLUX™ Classifier produced strong control of the product grade. Products as high as 41.1 wt. per cent Cr2O3 were produced at 78.6 per cent recovery for the +106 µm material, while in the −106 µm portion the product grade was as high as 41.4 wt. per cent Cr2O3 at 83.2 per cent recovery. Processing the feed in discrete size classes enabled the volumetric feed and fluidisation rates to be optimised for a given application; hence, superior performance was achieved at the finer sizes. This work has demonstrated the value in considering feed preparation as well as technology selection in developing a robust process solution.

Most of South AfricaÆs high-grade iron ore resources are hosted within a fault-controlled structural basin in rocks of the Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Iron mineralisation occurs as individual orebodies in fault-bounded basins or as fold-controlled concordant lenses around an unconformity plane above the Kuruman Banded Iron Formation. The Sishen mine near Kathu and the beeshoek mine and Sishen South deposit near Postmasburg lie on the northern and southern border of a major domal structure known as the Maremane dome, respectively. The effects and structural constraints of at least three orogenic compressive episodes and several intermittent extensional episodes on the formation, erosion and preservation of iron mineralisation on the Maremane dome and surrounding environs were investigated. Ventersdorp impactogenal rift basin development at ~2.78 - 2.64 Ga, finalised with the deposition of the volcano-sedimentary Vryburg Formation during the thermal subsidence stage at ~2.64 - 2.6 Ga, and was followed by tectonic quiescence/stability and an extensive marine transgression across the entire Kaapvaal craton. The drowning event led to the formation of a carbonate platform with the deposition of the Schmidtsdrif and Campbellrand subgroups conformably above the Vryburg Formation at ~2.6 - 2.52 Ga. The initiation of distal (to the west of the Kaapvaal craton) off-craton oceanic rifting, causing submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity, led to the deposition of initially manganiferous chert (Wolhaarkop Formation) followed by banded ironstone formations (Manganore Iron/Kuruman Formation) of the Asbestos Hill Subgroup at ~2.52 - 2.46 Ga. Initial passive margin rifting along the N-S oriented western edge of the Kaapvaal craton, initiated at the end of Ghaap Group time (during Koegas Subgroup deposition) at ~2.46 - 2.35 Ga, formed a prominent system of N-S striking, westerly dipping normal faults. Easterly directed crustal compression in post-Ghaap Group time in response to the Kalahari Orogeny (accretion of Rehoboth craton along western edge (Kalahari suture zone) of the Kaapvaal craton at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ma led to the formation of large-scale regional, N-trending F1-folds. Partial to complete inversion of the Koegas passive margin rift system (ie reverse dip-slip reactivation of the N-S striking normal fault system to high-angle reverse faults and dextral strike-slip reactivation of the Ventersdorp rift system developed in the Archaean basement), was followed by uplift, erosion and formation of a regional angular unconformity (Postmasburg unconformity). Uplift was accompanied by deposition of fluvio-glacial sediments of the Makganyene Formation (Lower Postmasburg Group) within an intracratonic peripheral foreland basin setting unconformable above Ghaap Group strata at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ga. Post-orogenic crustal relaxation and rifting caused extensional reactivation of the N-trending Palaeoproterozoic passive margin rift system and NE-trending Neoarchaean Ventersdorp impactogenal rift system, forming a fault-controlled depository for the volcano-sedimentary Upper Postmasburg Group at ~2.24 - 2.1 Ga. Deceleration in rifting was succeeded by thermal subsidence of the Upper Postmasburg Group rift, erosion, formation of a regional angular unconformity and deposition of clastic sediments of the Lower Olifantshoek Supergroup unconformable above Postmasburg Group strata at ~2.1 - 1.93 Ga. Renewed rifting led to the deposition of volcano-sedimentary units of the Upper Olifantshoek Supergroup within a rift system superimposed on the Postmasburg Group rift depository at ~1.93 - 1.83 Ga. Easterly directed crustal compression during the Kheis Orogeny at ~1.83 - 1.73 Ga led to renewed inversion of rift structures of the Postmasburg Group and Olifantshoek Supergroup depository, N-trending F2 folding and thin-skinned thrusting of older rock units eastwards over the cratonic cover, thereby utilising planes of weakness in the strata such as prominent unconformities and lithological contrast boundaries as principal dTcollements. NNW-directed crustal compression in response to Lomanian (Namaqua-Natal) Orogeny at ~1.15 - 1.0 G along the southern margin of the Kaapvaal craton, resulted in minor sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the N-S striking fault system, the formation of extensional NNW-SSE striking fracture/fault zones and the development of ENE-trending F3 folds forming a F2/F3 fold interference pattern. Post-Lomanian tectonic events (eg the Pan-African Orogeny at ~650 - 500 Ma, the Cape Orogeny at ~310 - 240 Ma, and the Gondwana breakup at 205 - 120 Ma), caused only comparatively minor extensional reactivation of the pre-existing fault systems. Iron mineralisation was ultimately preserved from erosion by Kheis Orogeny-related N-trending F2 synclines and Lomanian Orogeny-related ENE-trending F3 synclines, in particular areas of interference between F2 and F3 synclines representing comparatively deep semi-circular trough- like depressions, as well as in half grabens formed adjacent to reactivated westerly dipping N-S normal faults. Support for relating the iron and manganese mineralisation to structurally controlled hydrothermal fluid flow during the Kheis orogenic event has also been found, and ongoing research is aimed at confirming and refining the hydrothermal model for iron ore mineralisation in the Northern Cape.

Currently all engineering schools face a common problem, an ever expanding technological base which must be presented to students within a fixed time period. Traditionally the programmes of study taken by engineering students destined for employment within the mineral industry include formal instruction in aspects of management to an extent greater than that presented in other engineering disciplines. Providing an adequate coverage of an expanding technological base within a fixed time span can lead to a reduction in the time available for 'non-technical' subjects, such as 'management'. This situation calls for periodic review of course contents and allocations of time. Following consultation with an Advisory Committee representing the mineral industry, mining research establishments, and kindred teaching institutions, the University of Melbourne has revised its mining programme. The scope of this report is to examine the aforementioned hypothesis by performing a detailed analytical comparison of a P&H electric rope shovel to an O&K diesel powered hydraulic excavator. In order to complement the integrity of the concluding results, two different size categories will be analysed in order to demonstrate that the findings can be extrapolated and applied to all the machinesÆ size classes. These two size classes are categorised by their bucket sizes and they are in the range of 43 - 58 cubic metres and 23 - 26 cubic metres. It should be noted that electric powered hydraulic excavators will not be considered in this report. In order to compare the electric and hydraulic types, the machine variants that will be analysed are commercial cost-effectiveness and operational flexibility. Although operational flexibility can be an ambiguous characteristic, a clear and thorough definition describing its exact meaning has been included. In order to simplify this study, all the data collected for this comparison have been for overburden removal, eliminating the variation that occurs with the movements of the shovel when selectively mining in the ore deposit. Thus, it ensures that all the data that is compared stems from a common origin for all the shovels. In other words the information will be compared when digging in the same material, loading into the same sized haul trucks, and when possible, with the same operators. Theoretical data received form the respective manufacturers, and actual data obtained from Mount Whaleback, was used for this comparison. This leads to the final comparison, where the operational flexibility and the cost-effectiveness are evaluated, with respect to their individual importance, ultimately influencing the final recommendation.

Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy environments. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. However, the future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation as well as optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. As a result, this paper investigates a ‘lean production’ (LP) philosophy for the organisation of future mines. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent LP can be used to organise for attractive mining. It first defines what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the LP concept will be given as well as a review of how it is discussed and utilised in mining today. The treatment of mixed lead carbonate and lead sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa presents a problem which is unique ,in the lead smelting world; a problem whose solution is far from simple, and is not yet complete. Two years of study under plant conditions have definitely proved, however, that a most satisfactory sinter can be made in a single-pass roast.The object of this paper is to present a brief record of the development of the single-pass roast and a resume of current practice in the smelting plant. The sintering operation is discussed in greater detail, as it is upon this phase of the work that every item in the smelter operating programme depends.The smelter, to-day, presents a very much simplified layout, equipped for economical, straightforward operation, requiring, however, very careful and constant supervision, due to the extreme delicacy of the sintering operation and to the rapid and wide variati9n in the nature of the concentrates which are to be handled.

The Telégrafo copper – gold deposit is located in the Centinela district of the Antofagasta region in northern Chile. Telégrafo is a porphyry copper deposit of Eocene – Oligocene age which has a total mineral resource in measured, indicated and inferred categories equal to 2.6 billion tonnes with an average grade of 0.38 per cent copper.Currently the project is in the prefeasibility study phase, including an infill drilling campaign to improve the knowledge of the deposit that should result in an improvement of the mineral resource classification. In this context was decided to review the classification criteria in order to optimise the drill hole density necessary to support the project.This paper presents an application of conditional simulation to evaluate the risk related to drill hole spacing, using a geostatistical approach that mimics the process of evaluation of resources from the perspective of geological modelling and grade estimation. The first step of the approach is the generation of conditional simulations using the available samples to generate several plausible scenarios of the deposit in terms of copper grades and geological units. These scenarios are considered as the unknown reality of the deposit and sampled by synthetic drill holes in order to replicate the geological model process and copper resource estimation. In this way it is possible to establish differences between the possible scenarios and the generated resource estimation models for several simulated drill hole spacing alternatives. These differences or errors can then be quantified in terms of estimated mean, metal content and tonnage over different production volumes.The resulting errors were useful in assisting the decision making process related to the design of drill hole spacing for each category of mineral resource in the Telégrafo project, and to redistribute the budget associated to the drill campaigns for the next stage of the project.

RISKGATE, an Australian Coal Association Research Program-funded (ACARP) initiative, has been designed to assist the Australian coal mining industry in improving minimum standards for safety performance, efficiency, operating practice and training. The online system is innovative in that it is built upon a foundation of industry expert knowledge gathered through action research workshops, which is further supported by a broad array of industry, academic and technical resources. In operation, RISKGATE offers a continuum for knowledge transfer and communication of current practice in risk identification, assessment and management in the coal mining industry. The primary mission of RISKGATE is to focus industry attention on prioritising control management as a way to achieve acceptable risk.A Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module has recently been added to the RISKGATE suite. The key risk, or initiating event, associated with coalmine tailings dams is catastrophic failure of the dam, leading to the release of tailings and water. This can occur due to geotechnical instability of the dam itself or of its foundation, overtopping and erosion of the dam, and piping failure of the dam itself or of its foundation. Coalmine tailings dams are also prone to seepage into the foundation and through the dam, particularly during operation when large volumes of water are discharged with the tailings. The most significant risk associated with seepage is the release of potentially contaminated water to the environment. Contamination can take the form of elevated salinity, acidity and dissolved metals. Run-off from coalmine tailings can cause erosion and can also potentially contain contaminants. Desiccation of the tailings surface can result in dust generation and dispersion.The paper presents the background and context of the RISKGATE project, the need for the addition of the RISKGATE Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module, and a description of the developed module, including the five initiating events considered, their causes and associated preventive controls, and their consequences and associated mitigating controls. The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulphides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralization. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphio column and mineralogy of the sediments.

Australian continental crust has accreted and consolidated by thirds: 1/3 during Archean time, 1/3 during Early to mid- Proterozoic time, and 1/3 during latest Precambrian to mostly Paleozoic time. The progression of orogenic systems and the crustal consolidations they represent seem not fundamentally different in basic orogenic processes from better known Mesozoic-Cenozoic examples in that accretionary, continental margin, collisional, and intraplate intracratonic inverted and/or reactivated systems are all recognizable in the tectonic evolution of Australia.

Operational readiness is a commonly used term in mining and many other industry settings. However, translating this term into a coherent scope of work that is practical and meaningful is a challenge faced by many mining projects. This inhibits the allocation of resources to the work and its completion. The problem is with understanding how the terminology applies to establishing a mining operation. Resolving this problem requires clarity around what operational readiness means for a mining project’s transition to operations and who owns the tasks of completing operational readiness. The motivation for resolution of this problem is in appreciating the consequences arising from any lack of clarity in definition of this task, the timing of the work, and ownership for its completion. In broad terms, these consequences amount to an erosion of value at a critical time for both the new mine and the company and shareholders. This situation often arises where operational readiness is not adequately addressed in project’s study phases. As a result, neither time, resources nor money are adequately provided to complete the work required. In other cases, operational readiness is sometimes assimilated with the delivery of the project’s physical assets by the project’s construction team, rather than aligned with the establishment of the operating team to deliver the desired operational outputs. This paper argues that operational readiness starts in a project’s study phases and flows through into the start of operations. The definition of operational readiness is discussed as a task, and a model for its planning and completion is presented. This discussion includes assigning ownership for operational readiness planning and delivery to the General Manager of a new operation and the operations leadership team, who are central to the success of this work. After all, the reputations of this leadership team depend on the performance of the operation in its first few years. The author’s work over the last 20 years, leading operational readiness programs and the preparation of feasibility studies for mining projects, has provided the insights and evolution of ideas that are central to this paper. Operational readiness is fundamentally directed at ensuring a new mining operation gets away to a successful start and builds a solid foundation for the future of the mine/operation/province. It requires clarity of purpose, ownership and coordination by people in the operating team, and their preparation of the requisite process definition and establishment of the significant relationships required for operations. Without its successful completion, it is unlikely the new operation will meet and sustain its start-up targets. This paper discusses a practical approach to operational readiness for mining projects.

This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.
