To investigate the effect on coal spontaneous combustion with high geo-temperature, an experimental apparatus was developed to measure characteristic parameters of two kinds of coal samples at different temperatures: one was 40°C (G coal sample) and the other was a rising temperature from room temperature (C coal sample). Based on the relationship between CO concentration and the temperature variation, a calculation model of the apparent activation energy of coal was established. The results indicated that the oxygen consumption rate, the generation rate of CO and CO2, and heat release intensity of G coal sample were higher than C coal sample. This trend was more and more obvious as the temperature increased. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of G coal sample was lower than C coal sample, especially at low temperature stage, which demonstrated that the more the oxidation and exothermic reaction of G coal sample was enhanced, the less energy was required to break the barrier of oxidation reaction. Australia has a long history of underground mining. Even withadvances in open cut mining equipment, techniques andeconomics, many orebodies are still best mined by undergroundmeans. In addition, modern exploration tools are æuncoveringÆorebodies that are at increasing depths. South African mines arecurrently producing from below 3 km, and developing down to5 km depths û it is likely that Australian mines will also becomemuch deeper over the next 20 years. One of the most significanttechnical challenges in deep mines is the problem of heat.Community expectations and legislated standards continue todrive operations towards improving the working conditions inmines. The hazards and costs associated with chronic hotworking conditions (heat illness, poor safety, poor productivity,higher operating costs and poor morale) are also becomingincreasingly recognised (Brake, Donoghue and Bates, 1998). Theexposure of miners to many other occupational hazards has beenreduced over the past 50 years. However, despite air-conditionedcabins greatly reducing the heat stress on mobile plant operators,there are still many Australian mine workers subject to levels ofthermal stress that existed a century ago. There are severalreasons for this, including a frequently-poor understanding of thephysiology of working in heat by mine management, no agreedmining code of practice for working in heat, the lack of a robust,practical-sized instrument to measure heat stress, the costpressures on the industry and, to some extent, deep-seatedtraditional management and worker practices. Howeversignificant progress has been made in many of these areas (Brakeand Bates, in press), with the net result that there is likely to be a trend towards installation of refrigeration of some form in manyAustralian mines in the future. This will add directly to the costof operation, but will also have direct and indirect benefits,including cost benefits. It should also be noted that Australia isnot at the forefront of adopting practices to manage temperaturesin the workplace: South African metal mines usually haverefrigerated cooling, and Canadian mines spend large sums onheating, with heating costs (averaged over a full year) of up to$A1 per tonne mined (Bandopadhyay et al, 1997). The history of mine refrigeration dates back to 1919 when thefirst plant was installed at Morro Velho, Brazil. By 1965, the totalinstalled capacity (worldwide) reached about 100 MW(R)i. Since 1965 the growth in mine refrigeration capacity has beenexponential, with a doubling every six or seven years (Howes andNixon, 1997). South Africa is by far the largest user of minerefrigeration, with over 300 refrigeration machines installed. This paper discusses the key design issues associated with theapplication of refrigeration in underground metal or coal mines.Whilst the emphasis is on large, surface plants, small, surface orunderground refrigeration plants can also be very effective in thecorrect application and many of the principles of design andoperation are the same.

The usefulness of laboratory studies - petrology and mineragraphy in the search for, and investigation of, mineral deposits should not be exaggerated, but it should not be overlooked, because such studies will always contribute to an understanding of the geology of the deposits, and can on occasions provide invaluable information not otherwise available. A few examples furnished by the investigations of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will show this.Petrology.In the early stages of the investigation of the King Island scheelite deposit, during the war, when the nature of, the deposit was not understood, a series of samples embodying the exposed rock types was submitted to the Mineragrap;hic Section for petrologicalexamination by the Mineral Resources Survey. It was at once apparent to the petrologist that the King Island scheelite ore was a contact metamorphic deposit, in which a series of argillaceous shales, calcareous shales, impure limestones and limestones had beenintensely metamorphosed. The shales had been converted to finegrained biotite and actinolite hornfels, according to their lime content, and the impure limestones to fine-grained diopside hornfels, garnetdiopside hornfels and garnet hornfels (calc-flint), the garnet being the lime variety grossularite. The limestones, however, after being first converted to marbles, had suffered intense pyrometasomatism, involving substitution of immense quantities ,of silica and' iron for lime and carbonate, and had been converted largely to a coarsegrained garnet rock, in which the garnet was the lime-iron variety, andradite. The silica and iron were derived from the mineralising solutions of the adja,cent ,granite. intrusion, responsible for the contact metamorphism, and were accompanied by tungsten and some molybdenum. The tungsten in the presence of so much mobile lime, was precipitated as schecelite, much of it finegrained and enclosed in or intergrown, with the andradite garnet or the quartz interstitial to the garnet.It was apparent that the King Island scheelite deposit, was a perfect example of selective pyrometallomatic replacement in a bedded contact metamorphic deposit. The bedded nature of the original rocks was preserved, and the scheelite was practically limited to the original limestone beds, 'Which had been so much more susceptible to replacement after recrystallization, than the other sediments. The further geological study of the deposit then resolved itself into the task of mapping the folding and faulting of the deposit, with bore cores to provide the stratigraphic sequence, and establish the number of scheelite-bearing beds.A second example is provided by a petrological investigation of the mineral composition and genesis of the talc deposits of the Gumeracha district of South Austral.ia, which was undertaken at the request of the South Australian ,Mines Department, in conjunctionwith mapping of these deposits. A large number of experiments have been carried out by many workers on the recrystallization of deformed and subsequently annealed metals and alloys. Although observations on single crystals are of great importance in the study of the recrystallization textures of deformed and annealed metals, very little of this work deals with material in this form.Since, in deformed metals, the stress concentration is greatest at the grain boundaries and along the planes of slipping, it is to be expected that recrystallization will start in these regions. For example, in polycrystalline aluminium (1),:1: (2), copper (3), a-iron (4) and brass (5), (6), which had been deformed by cold-rolling, drawing, pressing or stretching and then annealed, the new grains first appeared in the boundaries of the original crystals, whilst in the case of cupronickel (7) and iron (8), recrystallization commenced along the slip planes of the deformed material. Bio-Oxidation of Arsenic and Stibium Bearing Gold Ores Bio-oxidation of arsenic and stibium bearing gold ores with acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. The preoxidation results show that the best bio-oxidation technical parameters are the initial pH in the range of 1.8 ~ 2.0, particle sizes under 0.074 mm, temperature in the range of 25¦C ~ 30¦C and rotating speed of the orbital incubator in 100 rpm ~ 160 rpm. The leaching results show that If the ore, of which contain 10.37 per cent arsenic and 36.81 per cent stibium, is not bio-oxidised, gold leaching is only about 41 per cent, after 8 days oxidised, the result is about 76.55 per cent, which improved about 35.62 points. The relationship between gold leaching and arsenic oxidation is direct proportion, furthermore, it needs only partly oxidise and higher gold leaching could be get, for example, gold leaching is over 90 per cent when asenic oxidation is 60 per cent. The results will provide theoretical and technological supports of bio-oxidation arsenopyrite for pretreating refractory gold ores.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

Magnesite-rich and dolomite-rich ores from the Savage River region of Tasmania are being considered as potential feed material for a commercial process for production of magnesia.Two selected samples have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. The materials differ in calcination behaviour, with magnesite decomposing at a significantly lower temperature than dolomite. Calcination conditions have a marked effect on the rate and percentage of magnesium dissolved as the bicarbonate when slurries of the calcine are leached with carbon dioxide. From a process point of view, the feed should have the highest possible magnesite/dolomite ratio, while the optimum calcination conditions are determined by the behaviour of the magnesite component of the feed.From batch calcination tests, it is apparent that the optimum calcination conditions for magnesite-rich ore are a temperature in the vicinity of 700°C and a calcination time of one hour.

Bulk density and grade were determined on a variety of ore samples from the Mount Tom Price iron ore mine and the interrelationship between these properties and porosity deduced.Variable porosity is responsible for the wide scatter of data points and low accuracy of prediction in the grade of a single sample from grade/bulk density relationships.However, with a sufficient number of such data points, as from a nuclear geophysical borehole logging operation, the mean ore grade in an exploration-type drill hole (~63 per cent Fe) could be determined by regressionanal~sis with 95 per cent confidence intervals of approximately ± 1 per cent Fe. From the same logging operation, utilizing core data for calibration of the probe, the -mean fractional porosity for the drill hole (0·19 ± 0·016 at 95 per cent confidence interval) was deduced. This is less accurate than the corresponding result obtained on core material in the laboratory (0·20 ± 0·005).The range of porosity was from 0·08 for dense, high grade sectIOns of the ore, to 0·28 for friable ore of high grade or goethitic ore of lower grade. Shale band porosity ranged from 0·15 to anomalously high values of 0·48 believed to be caused by leaching of iron minerals from the shale. Porosity values for the iron ore component of the deposit are comparable to those found for the Cockatoo Island (W.A.) mine, and for sections of the Krivoy Rog (Ukraine) iron ore deposit of the Soviet Union.

In 2003, Independence Group NL purchased the Long Shaft Nickel Mine complex (Long) in Kambalda, Western Australia. Lightning Nickel, the nickel operating arm of Independence Group, faced considerable challenges operating the mine, with the most significant challenge being able to prove that the remnant ore at Long and the associated orebodies could be mined safely and efficiently. Given the seismic history at Long, the magnitude of these challenges could not be underestimated. In an effort to achieve 100 per cent extraction of the flatter orebodies, traditional methods such as room and pillar were dismissed. A method consisting of transverse sills, butting into each other was proposed. To stop fill material from the first sill rilling into the adjoining sill, it was proposed to backfill the sills with pumped cement fill. The capital cost of the fill plant was estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million and the cost for cement alone was $1.0 million per annum. Shotcrete was already an extremely useful tool in dealing with the widely variable stress environment, but was to be used in an innovative manner that would enable the full extraction of a tabular section of the Victor South orebody. A layer of shotcrete, approximately 100 mm thick, was to be sprayed on the up dip wall of the initial development sill. The sill was to be backfilled with ænormalÆ development waste and ætoppedÆ with sand backfill. The next sill, ie slightly up dip and alongside, was to be mined along the shotcrete boundary wall. With respect to wall stability, the premise was that the shotcrete wall would stay in place and prevent the backfill (development waste and sand) from rilling into the adjoining development. It was also proposed that any breaches of the shotcrete wall would be repaired using shotcrete before substantial inflow of backfill into the ænewÆ development. This paper describes the development and implementation of this mining method, as well as some of the associated financial aspects.

Within CRLÆs lifetime there have been a number of products that have proceeded through their life cycles. In each case market forces and technological advances have forced the cessation of the product. The company has then had to develop alternative outlets for its copper. Sometimes it has produced a similar product to fill the same market. In other cases the extra copper is sold as cathode. Today, CRL produces no semi-fabricated copper products and all cathode is sold. More recently, CRL has ventured into the sale of technology and manufacture of cathode motherplates. This area, whilst it is not what had been a traditional area of core business, has been found to be profitable.

Experiments conducted at Tahmoor Colliery, Sydney Basin, have demonstrated the variability in chemical and isotopic composition of seam gases issuing from boreholes in the Bulli seam and desorbing from lump coal from the same source.From this work it appears that an immediate preferential release of methane accompanies the physical disturbance of the coal seam by penetration with development or drilling or by detachment. In addition, both early released methane and carbon dioxide are depleted in 13C relative to later desorbed gases, therefore the analyses of gas samples taken after such events may not reflect the true bulk composition of the undisturbed seam gas in situ. A method for overcoming this problem by taking gas samples at depth in the "steady state" is proposed.

Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. The use of the analysers in conjunction with the blending model has proven that the variation of the reclaimed coal quality was decreased significantly, which results in increased process performance and significant cost savings.CITATION:Bachmann, C C, Bachmann, J F, Cipold, M P and Ha, J, 2017. The paper examines three types of polar zoning of ore-forming and associated elements that can be detected from geochemical data. Polar zoning is mapped in the form of geochemical ore systems of various ranks. Various types of polar zoning can be found in some systems, which present a general geochemical model of the ore object. The genetic basis of zoning is examined from the perspective of the conception of geoelectrochemical redistribution of matter, including ore-forming elements. The volume of the geochemical ore system may be used in the prognosis of resources for every rank.

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

All development proposals have to run the gauntlet of the approvals process. Major resource projects are generally subject to particularly intense scrutiny. The key element in the approvals process is that it is about making decisions that take into account the benefits or otherwise to society as a whole - the interests of any one group do not take precedence. Most groups tend to see their relatively narrow interests as representing those of the broader society. Each group develops their arguments for or against a project in isolation, and then presents these to an arbiter in an adversarial situation. From this mire of argument and counter-argument it is often difficult to discern just what the real benefits of a project are, and opportunities for agreement and constructive modification of proposals to meet real concerns are often missed. The contention made in this paper is that the inevitable differences between these various viewpoints should be harnessed to help the proponent to come up with a proposal that is clearly of overall benefit to society and which gains approval. It is better to accept that no one group has a monopoly on wisdom in this area and to engender an environment of creative tension in which the pros and cons can be broadly considered and good planning and design used to produce a proposal that has a high chance of success. There are a variety of ways in which this approach can be implemented. Some of these options will be discussed in terms of their likely applicability to energy projects and their potential for success.

Trueman: I am not aware of any definite evidence of the temperature of formation of these minerals, but am of the opinion that high temperatures would not be present during crystallization.No evidence from the qUl'trtz, magnetite and hematite of formation temperatures is indicated and, as the carbonate is later than the other minerals it does not supply any data either.According to Miyashiro and other workers who have studied the composition and stability of the glaucophaneriebeckite series, minerals of riebeckite composition are stable over a wide range of P, T conditions. Recent work by W. G. Ernst, of the University of California, indicate that, in the presence of an Fe203/Fe304 buffer, riebeckite and crocidolite are more likely to form at low temperatures. The occurrence of riebeckite-crocidolite as authigenic minerals has been reported from several localities.Dr. MacLeod (Geol. Surv. of W. A.): Recent regional mapping by the Geological Survey of Western Australia has revealed a total thickness of at least 30,000 ft for the Proterozoic sediments in the Hamersley Basin. In this succession the asbestos-bearing beds of the Brockman Iron Formation at Wittenoom are overlain by some 20,000 ft of younger sediments and volcanics.
