FOR a number of years up to the economic setback of the 1929-1931 period, the greatest proportional advances in the mineral industries in California were made among the substances in the nonmetallic groupings, particularly among the so-called industrial minerals and the salines. During the past year or two, although these have not regained the stride that marked their progress in the preceding decade, we can still record, -some new developments. California produces annually between 55 and' 60 different minerals on a commercial scale. Of these, some 40 to 45 comprise the "structural," "industrial," and "salines" materials as grouped in the reports of the State's Division of Mines. GERMANY'S recent collapse and the occupation by the Allies of the coal fields of the Ruhr, the Saar, Silesia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia have focused attention on the postwar coal problems of Europe. American coal operators are interested deeply in what is happening in Britain, particularly in the discussion of plans to rehabilitate and reorganize the entire British coal mining industry, as such reorganization will probably determine the place Britain will occupy in the European coal markets for the next few decades. The continuing decline of British out-ut per man-shift, particularly during wartime, has resulted in a most serious effort to determine whether this unfortunate trend is due to the physical condition of the coal seams, poor management, poor engineering and planning, inadequate use of power and machinery, or failure of labor to co-operate with management.

Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. WITH the example of the steel open-hearth men and their round table conference before the copper men, the query naturally arose "Why cannot we do likewise?" The advantage of pooling and comparing knowledge on smelting in the copper reverberatory furnace seems particularly pertinent at this time when all metallurgical economies possible must be rigorously enforced. A great deal of data had also been obtained and filed during the period of litigation over the Carson patent, and it would naturally be available with the cessation of further suits. With these ideas in mind, H. Foster Bain took up the advisability of holding such a conference directly with the heads of all the companies in the United States operating copper reverberatories, and found a nearly unanimous response. The mining companies appointed representatives directly, or indicated to the heads of various metallurgical operations what members of their staffs should be sent to such a conference.

Drilling for oil and gas in Arkansas in 1934 showed more activity than in any year since 1929; with a total of 96 completions, including 36 oil wells, 1 gas well and 59 dry holes. Of the producers, the lone gas well and 35 oil wells were in old fields, and one wildcat producer opened a new pool. Of the dry holes, 16 were in or near fields and 43 were wildcats. The total reported initial daily production of the oil wells was 9013 bbl., averaging 252 bbl. per well. Active drilling operations numbered 65 at the close of the year, compared with 26 at the beginning.

During the last quarter-century, exploration for metallic deposits in Maine has been sporadic with peaks generally coinciding with periods of high metal prices. Known cases of regional or semi-regional evaluations are few; most efforts have been local and usually intensive. On the basis of broad geologic groups, the State has been divided into five fundamental environments: ( 1) coastal metamorphic belt; (2) southern volcanic belt; (3) Silurian slate belt; ( 4) northern volcanic belt; and ( 5) Devonian slate belt. Although not restricted to these areas, exploration in recent years has been concentrated in the northern and southern volcanic belts. Notable examples of recent exploration activity, directed to sulfide minerals, include: ( 1) the Knox County nickel-copper-bearing ultramafic rocks; (2) the Harborside (Cape Rosier) copper-zinc deposit; (3) the Second Pond (Black Hawk) zinc-copper-lead-silver deposit; ( 4) the Big Hill-Barrett lead-zincsilver- copper-gold zones; (5) the Parmachenee copper-zinc belt; ( 6) the Moxie Lake nickeliferous peridotite; and (7) the Attean quartzmonzonite molybdenum-copper occurrences. The Second Pond and Harborside prospects appear to be close to production. Systematic investigations for non-metallic deposits appear to have been aimed principally toward limestone, asbestos, diatomaceous earth, and spodumene-bearing pegmatites. Advances in prospecting methods, high metal prices, a favorable business outlook, increasing cooperation from large landholders, and some discoveries support the probability of increased exploration activity in Maine during the coming decade.

A SURVEY and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. CALCULATION OF YOUNG'S MODULUS FROM THEORETICAL OR EMPIRICAL CONSIDERATIONS Many attempts have been made to compute E from theoretical considerations. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Southerland (1891), but Fessenden 41,42 made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: [2E = 78. 101 (_L V] where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski,43 working from the same stand-point but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: [E=B(m) 2] where B is a constant of value about 8 • 10 7, p is density and m is atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being m/p. Portevin44 immediately pointed out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: [E _ KT'Vb] where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson.45 Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff. 50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs.46-48 He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium,

The technical sessions, excepting the Sunday afternoon and evening sessions of the Mineral Industry Education Division (see the M.I.E.D. program) will be held in the Engineering Societies Building. The "All-Institute" luncheon on Monday will be at the Commodore Hotel; the Annual Banquet and President's Reception, the Smoker, and the Informal Dance will be at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The dinners of the Petroleum Division and the Institute of Metals Division will be at the Roosevelt Hotel.

The unit agreement for the Wertz Dome field, Wyoming, was approved by the Acting Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior on November 4, 1937, effective on December 1, 1937. The stated objectives of the agreement are to conserve and put to beneficial use all oil and gas produced; to make possible a uniform withdrawal of oil and gas in order to maintain equalized reservoir pressures; to provide for an orderly determination of the structural features of the productive horizons; and to permit the injection of gas for pressure maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to show by a discussion of the problems involved and the engineering practices employed by the unit operator, how well the objectives of the unit agreement have been accomplished in the development and production of oil and gas from the field. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT The Wertz Dome oil and gas field is located 88 miles southwest of Casper and 38 miles north and westerly from Rawlins, Wyoming. It is served by a state secondary oiled road connecting with U. S. Highway No. 220 at Lamont, a distance of 3 miles from the field. It has been a producing field for 27 years, first as an important producer of gas and more recently of oil. The Producers and Refiners Corp. completed Well No. 1, NE1/4SW1/4 sec. 7, T. 26 N., R. 89 W., the first productive well in the field, in September. 1921, in the Muddy sandstone of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 3435 feet for an initial production of 42,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. In 1922 pipe lines were laid to Casper, Wyoming, for supplying fuel to the Standard of Indiana refinery, 'the adjoining town of Mills. and the Producers and Refiners Corp. pump station No. 6 in Mills; and to Parco (now Sinclair), Wyoming, for supplying that refinery with fuel. The gasoline content of the gas was extracted in an absorption plant located near the town of Mills. No compressors were used as the line pressure was sufficiently high to flow the gas through the absorbers. As high as 30,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day were treated in the plant extracting 6000 gallons of gasoline. In September 1937, the pipe line was discontinued and the plant was dismantled at which time 61,000,000,000 cu. ft. of gas had been produced from the seven Muddy, Cloverly, and Sundance gas wells drilled in the field. Of this volume of gas 800,000,000 cu. ft. were produced from the Frontier formation, 34,200,000,000 cu. ft. from the Muddy sandstone, 24,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Cloverly, locally called Dakota, and 2,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Sundance formation. The pipe line was discontinued because of the near depletion of the gas reserves in Wertz and nearby fields, and hecause of the local field requirements demanding the retention of the remaining gas reserves. In December 1936, the Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. completed Well No. 10, SE1/4NW1/4 sec. 7. T. 26 N., R. 89 W., at a depth of 5886 feet. as the first Tensleep sand producer with an intial of 1700 barrels of oil per day. The well was originally drilled only 14 feet into the sand and in August 1939 was deepened to a depth of 6161 feet, 289 feet in the sand, and the daily produe tion increased to 8350 barrels of oil. In February 1948 Well No. 22, SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 1. T. 26 N., R. 90 W., was deepened from the Tensleep to the Basal Amsden sand and completed at a depth of 6635 feet for an intial of 600 barrels of oil per day in the Basal Amsden. In April 1948, Well No. 2. SW1/4 NE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N., R. 90 W.. was deepened from the Tensleep to the Madison limestone and was completed at a depth of 7193 feet for an intial of 1145 barrels of oil per day in the Madison. Well No. 26, SE1/4SE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N.. R. 90 W., was deepened from the Ten-sleep to the Cambrian and in October 1948 it was completed in the Cambrian for an intial of 277 barrels of oil per day. GEOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVE ACREAGE The surface is Steele shale of Upper Cretaceous age, covered in part by gravel beds. This treatise is the sequel of a paper on "Russell's Improved Process for the Lixiviation of Silver-ores," etc., read at the Chicago meeting, in May, 1884, and published in the Transactions, vol. xiii., page 47. The facts it presents are principally compiled from Mr. Russell's notes on his practical experience gained in various places where the Russell process has been introduced. For a complete understanding of this paper a perusal of my former one is desirable, as can be seen from the frequent references here made to it. All silver-ores that do not carry a large percentage of lead or copper can be treated by Russell's process with success and economy. I do not mean to create the impression that from ores containing considerable quantities of lead and copper a high percentage of the silver cannot be extracted by this process. Such ores, however, will, in many localities, be reduced to better advantage by smelting. In case lead-bearing silver-ores are suitable for concentration, it may be profitable to concentrate the ore by Krom's dry system, obtaining a smelting-product high in lead, and to lixiviate the tailings and the dust. This plan has been adopted in a mill recently erected in Cortez District, Nevada. The dry system of concentration deserves the preference because it delivers the tailings and the dust in a condition ready for chloridizing-roasting. In wet concentration the drying of the tail ings would be expensive, and there would be a considerable loss of silver in slimes. Oxidized ores, containing silver chloride and lead minerals, may be lixiviated after crushing, and the tailings may be concentrated for lead. In this case wet concentration would be most suitable. This has been done at the Old Telegraph Mine, Utah. I would give, however, the preference to dry concentration in all cases which, of course, requires that concentration should precede lixiviation. JAPAN'S iron and steel industry has always been closely connected with military strategy. Many years ago it became evident that the country's iron-ore resources were too small to support any extensive industry. As a result a belief in the imperative necessity of securing such resources has influenced Japan's political and economic policy in the Far East. Iron-ore developments in China are too well known to need repeating except to note that they have been rather unsatisfactory to both China and Japan. The ore deposit at Tayeh, in China, is not as large as was first believed and, though that and other sources of supply in China proper are now furnishing Japan a little more than a million tons of ore yearly, it cannot be counted upon as a large permanent source of supply. The deposit in Shantung proved so disappointing on further exploration that operations there have, so far as I know, long since ended. The operations at Pen-bsi-hu, in South Manchuria, which C. F. Wang de¬scribed in the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS for 1918, Vol. 59, were reported to have yielded 84,000 tons of pig iron in 1928 and about 50,000 in 1935, so they seem to be going back.
