Preparing the Metals.—Ordinary silver wire was hard-drawn to No. 23 Brown and Sharp gauge; it was cut in two, and one piece was carefully annealed in the ordinary way. The wire was prepared by Messrs. Guild and Delano, jewelers, Boston. The Ansonia Brass and Copper Co., Ansonia, Conn., kindly furnished me with some hard-drawn copper wire No. 31, A. W. G., and some of the same wire after annealing in the ordinary way.

COAL research during 1941 had a marked increase in activity on problems bearing directly on furthering the increased and improved use of coal in homes and industry. Coal producers and fuel engineers expressed a greater interest in its practical possibilities and the coal laboratories have shown an increased interest in applied research, of value at once or in the near future to industry and the public. A large volume of accomplishment in mining, coal analysis, and the fundamentals of coal constitution and coal chemistry also continued to fill the storehouse from which applied research and fuel engineering of the future can draw valuable data.

The present day success of gravel packs to prevent or retard the migration of unconsolidated sands into the well bore is due to: (I) the use of a saline or non-aqueous, nonsolids drill fluid, (2) proper preparation of the well bore prior to gravel packing, and (3) pressure placement of the gravel. The experience gained from the "pressure pack" method of gravel packing indicates that sand-free fluid production can be maintained for a length of time sufficient to make the operation economically attractive. Data pertaining to the first 15 wells so completed by Gulf indicate that for each dollar spent to effect the completion, there will be a return of more than $2.92. The pressure pack technique of gravel packing is essentially the placing of gravel in and adjacent to the producing formations. This is done with fluid pressure and by the use of a drill fluid that will permit partial or complete loss of returns to the formation during placement. This technique was first intentionally used by Gulf in May, 1950, and since that time has been applied in more than 90 wells. Other advantages claimed for this type of completion are that the pressure placement of the gravel has a scouring effect on the casing perforations, that additional drainage channels to the well bore are created, and that the possibility of shifting of the formations adjacent to the casing is minimized and possibly prevented. During the past few years, the use of gravel to prevent or retard the migration of unconsolidated sands into the well bore has met with a favorable degree of success. Numerous methods and techniques of "gravel packing" have been used, each having its own relative merits, and with varying results. M. L. Cashion1 in 1939 ably reviewed the history of gravel packing to that time. As stated in his paper, ". .. the idea of gravel packing wells is not new." During the period 1939 to 1949, very little if any progress or change in technique in this type of completion was made. However, it was noted in some cases that during the placement of gravel, if there was a loss of drill fluid to the formation, there was a corresponding loss of gravel to the formation. Also, it was noted that in those gravel-packed completions (opposite casing perforations) that "sanded up," there was found to be an absence of gravel in the annular space between the liner and casing, although gravel had previously been placed in this space and no gravel had been removed from the well at the surface. These findings resulted in the placement of gravel with fluid pressure and by the use of a drill fluid that would permit partial or complete loss of returns to the formation during placement. Pressure placement of gravel became an accepted practice in late 1949 and early 1950. Another fact brought to light that has contributed to the current success of gravel pack completions is that drilling fluids containing solids will to some extent cause plugging of the screening medium or blocking of the producing section. AT the Non-ferrous Metallurgy session on Wednes-day afternoon, R. M. Roosevelt, vice-president of the Eagle-Picher Lead Co., presided. The paper "Sug-gested Improvements for Smelting Copper in the Rever-beratory Furnace," by G. L. Oldright and F. W. Schroeder, was presented by. Mr. Oldright. It was brought out that lessening of dusting of the charge would increase the life of the arch at present operating temperatures, but will not allow much higher tempera-tures to be used unless dusting can be entirely elim-inated. The best opportunity for improving rever-beratory practice lies in the use of still higher tempera-tures but this requires the development of refractories superior to those now used. STUDIES of the transformation of austenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Bain.1 Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of austenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8-in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650° to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. [ ] Metallographic Method Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examination of partially reacted specimens. Thees specimens were approximately ½ by ¼ by 1/8 in. in size. Specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr. at 1200° to I225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 ½ hr. at 1200°C. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. No. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed in Table I. THE United Electric Coal Companies, operating large strip mines at various points in Illinois, pioneered in developing and perfecting the strip method of mining coal by use of large shovels and drag-lines. Coal stripping was first started on the properties owned by this company near Danville, Ill., in 1885. The first mechanical' excavating machine used for the purpose was really a dredge minus the hull, which had been purchased from the Marion Steam Shovel Co. It was erected on a wood frame supported by wheels and was referred to as a dry-land dredge or stripping machine. Wood was used throughout in the construction of this primitive excavator, even for the boom which was 50 ft. long. A single-cylinder vertical steam engine furnished power to hoist the %-yd. dipper arid swing the boom. 400 cu. yd. of overburden moved in a day was a great record.

MANY changes were made in the methods and equipment used in the mining of pebble phosphate rock in the generation immediately preceding the present World War and it would be extremely interesting to note the improvements that will be made during the next generation. Literally, much water has gone over the dam since the days when we used local cordwood for generating steam and drying pebble phosphate rock. belt-driven centrifugal pumps operated by steam engines. and floating dipper or centrifugal dredges; when we removed overburden by small steam shovels and transported it by dinkey locomotives and six-yard cars; when washing machinery was installed on wooden structures the washers being replaced every four to six years. Those were the days when men were plentiful, and 47 different mining companies were selling their products, based on .decidedly meager information; and. like so many mining operations, little thought was given to conservation. As the importance of phosphate rock has become more prominent in the thoughts of our economists, a more intelligent approach has been made to mining problems. Committee certain Standard Specifications for Copper, all of which were adopted or in process prior to Jan. 1, 1920, and sent with the standards the following histories of development and statements of use. FOR SOFT OR ANNEALED COPPER WIRE (B3-15) These specifications were originaly adopted by. the American Society for Testing Materials in 1912. They were prepared by a committee of the Society designated as Committee B-1 on Copper Wire. The committee consisted of eleven members; representatives of five manufacturers of -copper wire, of four manufacturers of electrical apparatus, and of two firms of consulting and contracting engineers. The members of the committee were designated by the officials of the companies to act as their representatives in the committee.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN connection with the work of testing structural materials for the use of the U. S. Government at the laboratories of the technologic branch of the U. S. Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., from September, 1904, to April, 1909, and since then at Pittsburg, Pa., large quantities of sand, gravel, and crushed stone have been needed from time to time, besides samples of building-stone, clays, and other quarry-products. In many instances it has been necessary to obtain single samples of sand, gravel, or crushed stone in lots of a car-load or more. For obvious reasons all these collections have had to be made by a representative of the Survey. As the work progressed it was found essential that numerous geologic data should be gathered regarding the materials collected, in order that they might be properly classified as to kind of material, source, geologic age, etc., and that they might be rated according to quantity available, accessibility to transportation facilities, approximate costs, suitability for special purposes, etc., and that notes might be taken regarding undeveloped deposits of possible value. Furthermore, it was desired that the selection of materials for tests should be made broadly, so as to cover, first, the representative types of material, and later, if possible, the typical materials of the more important building-centers in the United States. In order to insure a certain degree of uniformity in this work and economy of effort and expense, it was decided that as much of the sampling as was practicable should be done by a member of the. geologic branch, whose regular field-trips could be combined conveniently with those necessary for procuring materials for the laboratory. During parts of the last three years I have been engaged in field-work of this sort.

(written discussion *).-Whatever processes of appraisal have been found most correct and feasible in one field or group of fields will generally prove most adaptable in others. So far as the California fields are concerned, Mr. Requa's paper appears to outline the most up-to-date processes of appraisal. It remains, then, to discuss and adapt these and to make such revisions in methods and processes of calculation as will give us results elsewhere. The trouble about most attempts to place a value on oil lands, whether in this country or elsewhere, has been that many of the so-called "experts" called upon to express an opinion either have not possessed the requisite engineering and geological knowledge to make an accurate appraisal of the lands, or that they were not furnished with sufficient information for the purpose in hand. The Independent. 011. Producers' Agency of California, for whom Mr. Requa's original report was prepared, had many advantages in this respect not generally available to engineers making reports, as all existing information seems to have been at the experts' disposal within the limits of a large number of properties, practically commensurate with the extent of the fields in question. Hence the report could be and was more accurate than any similar report for a single company is likely to be in other fields. Very few companies are so exempt from competition that all the data on neighboring leases of other companies will be freely turned over to them. In many companies, certain available data are concealed from the engineer who makes the reports, particularly if the properties are supposed to be worth less than their apparent value. In the case of other companies, having the best of intentions, the data are insufficient to help the engineer greatly in his appraisal, simply because the oil business has been so, unsystematic in most fields that only the largest and wisest companies have kept accurate figures regarding runs and gravity of oil from individual wells and from different depths. In many wells, which ran wild for clays or weeks in the older fields, there was a waste which is not recordable with exactness. These and many other difficulties confront even the most experienced expert in actual practice outside of the California fields. We may justly say, therefore, that an engineer in other fields of the United States and in the European, South American and Asiatic fields, must not only begin where the Independent Oil Producers' Agency

Application of surface tension measurements has been made to molten silicates in order to determine the effect of sulphur upon the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags. In melts with the same molar ratios of AI2O3 + SiO2 to the basic oxides BaO, CaO, and MgO, the surface tensions increase in the order of oxides listed. Sulphur lowers the surface tensions of the basic BaO, basic CaO, acid BaO, acid CaO, and acid MgO slags in that order; and the concentration of excess sulphur at the slag surface increases in this same order of slags. The rate and amount of desulphurization of iron by these slags is favored by a low excess surface sulphur in the slag. IN a previous paper,1 the authors discussed the applications of surface tension measurements of molten silicates to problems of metallurgical interest. Of major importance is the aid that such studies lend to forming a working concept of slag structure. Since the ability of a slag to desulphurize metal depends strongly upon its composition,2"4 fundamental information about the structural differences between various slags which contain sulphur should aid the development of better desulphurizing media. For that reason, the present investigation concerns the effect of sulphur upon the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags. Experimental Procedure , The maximum bubble-pressure method was used to measure the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags in the temperature range 1300° to 1600°C. It must be evident to almost everyone by now that a massive transformation is occurring in our iron ore economy. Its equal has been seen only once before in the entire history of the North American steel industry, and not even once before within the personal memory of anyone now engaged in it. The lone precedent was the beginning of ore shipments from the Mesabi Range in October, 1892, which was before anyone still short of normal retirement age had been born. No younger observer, in the steel industry or in any other, has ever known anything else than that the Lake Superior region-in which the Mesabi is the giant-has supplied all but a small fraction of total North American blast furnace ore for the use of three generations of steelmakers. Directly or indirectly, it was the discovery of the Mesabi which created most of the prime and satellite companies that have since come to prominence in the various ore-consuming phases, and it was the same discovery that had broader effects on the entire spectrum of their technologies than any other single event that has ever happened since, although the advent of byproduct coke is a close runnerup. It affected every sector of the national economy and was a keystone in making our standard of living what it is today.

THE meeting" of the Rare Minerals and Metals Committee was held Monday afternoon, Feb. 17; Donald M. Lidclell, chairman, presiding. The first paper (T. P. 279), "Progress in the Use of Tantalum," by George W. Sears, was read by Mr. Smyth. Dr. Sears' paper contains an interesting summary of the uses, alloys and ores of tantalum and a resume of present method of reduction. The uses of tantalum is based on its extreme rise to the reaction of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current. Tantalum, as an alloy material, has received considerable study and many alloys have been reported. Among them three types appear to .be most prominent, alloys of high melting point, hard alloys and acid rising alloys. As the estimated quantity of tantalum in the earth's crust is less than that of gold, it must be looked upon as n rare metal. Australia is the greatest producer and the Black Hills of South Dakota produce minor amounts. As the one type of mineral available contains both tantalum and columbium, the extracting and metallurgy of tantalum are difficult chemical processes. Greater simplicity in this and the development of a market for columbium would undoubtedly be of great benefit to the tantalum industry, andl make for a greater use of tantalum produced.

WITH imperfect instruments it is impossible to make accurate surveys; the results are inaccurate maps, with their attendant consequences. The design of the writer is to describe an improved form of tripod head, and certain defects in an English transit and a miners' dial, with the method taken to remedy the defects of the transit. When the present transit superseded the surveyor's compass, there was one special objection brought against it, and with some show of reason ; namely, that the tripod of the compass with its ball and socket motion, allowed a quicker levelling-up (and, consequently, more work) than was possible with the transit. To this objection it was replied, that the ball and socket would not allow the instrument to be levelled with the same degree of precision that could be attained with the levelling screws, and that if time was sacrificed greater accuracy was attained. Nevertheless, it is a well-known fact that in this country, and especially in England, the compass or miners' dial holds its ground solely from its rapid adjustment. Ever since the introduction of the transit, efforts have been made to give to this instrument the same facility of levelling possessed by the compass or dial, and the same means have been tried, i. e., a . ball and socket motion, since a modification of this in some form was the only method that would answer. The upper part of a transit is, however, much heavier than the corresponding parts of a compass, and, therefore, requires more binding power, which cannot be ob¬tained with an ordinary ball and socket joint. It has been a study with instrument-makers to combine the facility of these two tripods -the quickness of the ball and socket with the steadiness and accuracy of the screws; but in all attempts in this direction the ball and socket of the compass has been literally followed, the entire stability of the instrument depending upon the friction of the ball in its socket.
