A residence of 14 Sears in the Republic of Colombia, spent . in almost continuous traveling and prospecting-trips, has given me an intimate knowledge of the resources of that wonderful country. The man who best knows Colombia is unquestionably General Rafael Reyes, President of the Republic for the past three years, and with seven years more to serve in his present term. Such is the strength of his personality and the wisdom of his policies that his term of office will no doubt endure as long as he is milling to serve. The vastly improved economic situation and the brilliant outlook for Colombia are so directly due to the influence of President Reyes that a few lines concerning him will not be amiss, if they serve towards a better understanding of his personality. Born of a distinguished ancestry in the mountain~ of Boyaca, he is now 57 years old, just the age of his friend Porfirio Diaz when he began the work which has placed Mexico in the rank of great modern nations. SPEAKING generally, it may be said that leaching is the simplest method of recovering copper from its ores. Likewise it is perhaps the oldest method of treatment used by copper metallurgists of the modern era. Reliable records indicate that as early as 1752 cupriferous pyrite was leached in the famous Rio Tinto region in Spain. Though the manipulation was quite different from that in use today at Chuquicamata, New Cornelia, Inspiration, and Andes, it resembled that employed by Phelps Dodge at Bisbee, as described in Chapter XIV. Leaching consists of subjecting ore to the action of a liquid solvent or menstruum (usually an aqueous solution) which dissolves the major part of the soluble copper minerals. The resulting pregnant solution is drained off or otherwise separated from the residual ore; and the copper in the solution is then recovered by some appropriate means of precipitation. When sulphuric acid is the lixiviant, as is usual, the simplest procedure is to pass the copper-bearing solution through large troughs containing scrap iron. The iron displaces the copper in the solution, precipitating it as a slime coating the iron and varying in color -from bright copper to a dull black. This may be washed off at intervals, collected as a sludge, dried, and melted with a little fluxing material to produce reasonably pure copper. Usually, of course, the mud is sent to a smelter where most often its destination is the converter or reverberatory furnace. Modern practice uses precipitation on iron only as a complemental process to electrolytic precipitation or deposition, wherein the pregnant copper-bearing solution, acting as the electrolyte in a cell having insoluble anodes and copper cathodes, is depleted of the copper it contains. Although nickel was discovered and isolated as early as 1750 and its valuable properties recognized, many years passed before it was used commercially for wire, sheet, rods, etc., in the pure form. This was due partly to its high cost at that time and partly to the fact that it was not possible to refine and cast nickel into ingots sufficiently malleable to be amenable to the usual forging, rolling, or drawing processes. So remarkable was this fact, and so different from the experience at that time with metals such as copper and iron, that it has left its impress on the nomenclature within the nickel industry. To this day, furnace-cast nickel produced in such a manner as to be suitable for rolling and forging is called malleable nickel to distinguish it from the ordinary pig and shot nickel of commerce. In 1878, the firm of Jos. Wharton, of Philadelphia (which later became The American Nickel Works, a constituent of The International Nickel Co.) exhibited at the Paris Exhibition specimens of rolled pure nickel strip and of drawn nickel wire. About this time, there was considerable activity in the study of the refining of nickel and several methods were described, some of which were patented, for the production of furnace-cast malleable nickel including the use of manganese (Boed-dicker,1 Selve and Lotter2), the use of potassium permanganate (Berns-dorfer Metallwarenfabrik3) and the use of phosphorus (Garnier4). By far the most efficient method was discovered by Th. Fleitmann in 1879;5 it consisted in adding to the molten nickel, just before pouring the castings, from 0.05 to 0.125 per cent. of metallic magnesium. This soon became the recognized final malleableizing treatment for furnace-cast nickel.

Many of the problems that occur in the preparation plant originate from practices in the mine. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or from extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. In the case of underground mines, the choice of mining equipment will affect the size consist and the amount of extraneous material included with the coal. Also, governmental regulations concerning the degree of rock dusting, gobbing underground, and cleanup have increased the dirt in raw coal. Sulfur dioxide emission standards, on the other hand, are pressuring the coal industry to clean coal more thoroughly. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent (Fig. 1) and only incidentally with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 51 to 102 mm (2 to 4 in.), with little, if any, other treatment. JUSTIFICATION FOR COAL PREPARATION During the past decade, major changes have occurred affecting the market, profit, and long-range planning of the coal industry. Mining companies have become "partners" with consumers at many new and some old mines, both for steam and metallurgical coals. Coal properties have become "assigned" tonnages at mutually agreed upon conditions and prices. Lower unit-train tariffs have been instrumental in helping coal markets to compete against oil and nuclear energy. Coal prices for power plants are still on a Btu (British thermal unit)

The third special war meeting of the New York Section was held on Thursday evening, Sept. 27, in joint session with the New York Section of the American Electrochemical Society, in conjunction with the Third National Exposition -of-Chemical Industries, at the Grand Central Palace. The topic for discussion was ferro-alloys, and the supply' of raw materials for their manufacture. After a few introductory remarks by President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, and President Colin G. Fink of the American Electrochemical Society, Mr. C. S. Newcomb presented his paper on "Chrome Mining and Concentration."

It is well known that plastic deformation alters many of the properties of a metal and subsequent heat-treatment partially or completely restores these properties.l In the deformed or strained state, the metal is unstable and tends to change toward a condition called a "strain-free state." The transformation occurs through recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth—processes that may take place singly or in combination. The distortion of the lattice of an individual grain of a metal in a state of strain may be rather complex in nature, because plastic deformation produces: (I) dislocations within mosaic blocks; (2) elastic variations of the lattice spacings; and (3) gross alterations throughout the lattice, especially along slip planes, along composition planes between a grain and its mechanical twins, and along boundaries of deformation bands. These gross alterations are of the nature of bent planes or rotated regions of the crystal lattice and are revealed by a spread in the orientation of the grain. Although we cannot describe these strains and their formation accurately because of insuffcient knowledge, we can, nevertheless, use the information as well as possible to obtain a better understanding of recovery processes. In recovery, the lattice of a grain is not made anew as it is in recrystallization, but is improved or mended in such a way that the basic structure remains unaltered: Until recatly observations were .that recovery produced no marked changes in the shapes of spots in Laue diffraction patterns, whereas recrystallization did, but now it is known for silicon ferrite2 that Laue spots may become quite sharp entirely through recovery. Consequently, the shape of Laue spots alone would not be a suitable test to distinguish between recovery and recrystallization. There is considerable evidence that the micro-structure usually does not change visibly during recovery. Absence of a visible change in the microstructure, therefore, provides a sufficient test of recovery in many cases. However, including this observation in a definition of recovery as a necessary condition (this is usually done) is unfortunate, because recovery may, as will become evident later, produce new grain boundaries that are visible not only in the microstructure but also in the macrostructure. For the present, therefore, let us say that a necessary condition for a process to be one of recovery is that the principal orientation or orientations of a deformed grain be essentially unchanged throughout the transformation toward the strain-free state. Several transformations may occur that fulfill this condition, and the nature of the distortion in a grain indicates what these must be if the lattice is to be mended in part or fully. During the last 20 years, experimenters have sought to utilize pulverized coal in boiler plants, but refractory and slag troubles have usually overbalanced any gains in efficiency that were obtained. These troubles were caused largely by lack of knowledge of the proper methods of coal preparation and lack of a furnace design that would be adaptable to pulverized-coal firing. When this information was obtained the results were so much more satisfactory that within the last 5 years approximately 80,000 boiler hp. have been installed in plants ranging from 1000 to 20,000 boiler hp. rated capacity, which are operating at an average of 174 per cent. of rating. The first commercial installation for burning pulverized coal under boilers was made at the Parsons shops of the M. K. & T. railroad in 1916. Of eight 250-hp. water-tube boilers thus fitted, six were operated continuously for 3 yr., when oil was obtained at such a low price as to warrant its use. Since then, this plant has been operating alternately on pulverized coal and oil, depending on prevailing prices. Recently gas has been discovered within 20 mi. of this plant, so that this fuel may also be used. No change in furnace design was made when changing from pulverized coal to oil or gas firing. One of the principal advantages of this method of firing is its ability to utilize, with maximum efficiency, all kinds of coal, irrespective of quality or physical characteristics. In fact, quite a number of the present pulverized-coal installations were made for the purpose of utilizing coal that could not be marketed or used in any other way. The Pacific Coast Coal Co., at Black Diamond, Wash., formerly hand fired the boilers, using approximately 125 tons of prepared steam-size coal daily. The Black Diamond steam coal is the best quality of coal for steaming purposes mined in that section of the country, and there is a market for all that can be produced. By installing a pulverizing plant, it was possible to substitute coal of a size and quality that had no commercial value, so that 125 tons daily of the best steam coal formerly used at the mines is now marketed. A graphic method has been devised for three-di-mensional analysis of hot deformation and for correlating the amount and directionality of the deformation with resulting directional properties. Deformation is evaluated in terms of dimensional change ratios referred to three orthogonal axes. Since all combinations of the three ratios can be represented in a triangular coordinate field with logarithmic scales, a two-dimensional chart of extent of deformation and degree of asymetry is possible. The entire gamut of shape changes from upsetting through flat-rolling to rod-rolling is accommodated. The resulting coordinate system is a base upon which can be represented the properties of the wrought products measured in the directions of the axes employed fir evaluating the deformation. When property data are available for many types and amounts of deformation, a three-dimensional figure can be constructed, and the projection of this figure is referred to as a ''3d'' chart. Experience in using such charts to plan fabricating operations for a variety of thick-section forged and rolled products of heat-treated aluminum alloys has verified its practical value for optimizing directionality relationships. MechANICAL anisotropy of thick section products of heat-treatable aluminum alloys is recognized by producers and users of these products, and the extent of the directional differences is apparent in property tabulations included in handbooks, standards, and specifications.' Attention has also been directed to the existence of important directional differences in the resistance of these products to stress-corrosion cracking. Metallurgical structure factors responsible for these directional differences include, among other possibilities, shape and alignment of grains, voids and nonmetallic inclusions (when present), volume fraction and spatial distribution of secondary phase particles and solid-state precipitates, crystal-lographic textures, and Bauschinger effect. The contributions of the individual factors vary with alloy composition, heat-treated temper, type of working process (forging, rolling, extrusion), and the amount and directional nature of the deformation. In general, the cast ingot used as the starting material for producing these wrought products exhibits only a modest degree of directionality. A monotonic and continuous transition from this nearly isotropic state with progressive hot deformation would appear probable, assuming that the working temperature is sufficiently high to cause continuous dynamic recovery. Several years ago a project was undertaken to evaluate the effects of hot deformation and metallurgical structures on the directionality of thick wrought aluminum alloy products, and the method to be described was developed as an analytical tool in this investigation. DIRECTION NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature system adopted by industry for the three mutually perpendicular directions employed in testing aluminum alloy products includes four terms: "longitudinal", "transverse", "long transverse", and "short transverse". These terms are conventionally related to the external geometry of the product but also by implication to the deformation and resulting metallurgical structure. Occasions arise in which through use of unusual fabricating methods, intentional or otherwise, the structure does not have the usual relationship to external geometry or may be very complex because of inhomogeneity of deformation throughout the piece. The longitudinal direction is generally parallel to the primary rolling direction or to the direction of extrusion. In the case of forging, it is parallel to the direction of maximum extension (not maximum "working" or "flow", as frequently stated). The term transverse is applied to any direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction in a product having symmetry about the longitudinal axis, and generally, although not always, the deformation to produce these forms is nearly symmetrical in the transverse plane. This term then may be applied to a round, square, hexagon, or other polygonal, symmetrical shape produced by extrusion or rolling or by forging, if produced by a simple, symmetrical drawing procedure. For a long time, especially in Europe, heavy pieces of forging, such as cannon, armor plates, marine shafting, etc., have been steadily augmented in size, more particularly since steel has been substituted for wrought iron. To keep pace with these forgings several very large hammers have been, from time to time, erected. The most powerful and thoroughly appointed of all now in operation is that designed and built by Messrs. Schneider & Co. at their' works at Creusot, and it is the design of this communication to give to the members of the Institute a concise description of this remarkable piece of mechanism, which I have taken from an article published in the Annales Industrielles. This hammer is rated nominally at 80-tons power, but its capacity is, in reality, far greater, as will be seen by the comparative figures given later. Elemental titanium has become famous as a space age metal, because of its high strength/ weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. However, the major use is in the form of titanium dioxide pigment, which because of its whiteness, high refractive index, and resulting light-scattering ability, is unequaled for whitening paints, paper, rubber, plastics, and other materials. A relatively minor use is in welding rod coatings, in the form of the mineral, rutile. United States consumption of titanium dioxide for these applications in 1973 was as follows: pigments, 891,000 st; titanium metal, 40,000 st (=24,000 st metal) ; and welding rod coatings, 10,000 st. The only commercially important titanium ore minerals at the present time are ilmenite, and its alteration products, and rutile. Titanium was discovered by Gregor in 1790, as a white oxide which he recovered from menaccanite, a variety of ilmenite occurring as a black sand near Falmouth, Cornwall. Barksdale (1966) states that the fundamental chemical reactions on which the present day titanium industry is based were known before 1800, although it was not until 1918 that these pigments were available commercially on the American market. Pings (1972) outlines the early history of the titanium industry in the United States, referring to the work of Guise (1964) and others: "Mining of titanium minerals in the United States began sometime between 1880 and 1900, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Small quantities of rutile were also produced during the time in North Carolina and Georgia. In 1901 rutile was mined from a deposit near Roseland, Va., and was used in making titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Ilmenite in the deposit was produced as a separate item in 1913, and rutile and ilmenite were obtained from this deposit through 1921. The mining of titanium bearing beach sands began in 1916 near Mineral City and Pablo Beach, Fla., for the purpose of making titanium tetrachloride to be used in tracer bullets, flares, and smokescreens. The titanium pigment industry was founded in 1918. By 1928 a large part of the domestic production of rutile, ilmenite, and zircon came from Florida. However production ceased in 1929 in Florida with the mining of newly discovered deposits in Virginia which were mined until 1968. The discovery of new deposits in Florida, and the development of better mining and concentrating methods for lowgrade sands, led to a return of activities in this area. The large deposits near Tahawus, N.Y., were brought into production in 1942 by National Lead Co. (now N L Industries Inc.), and by 1949 this company was the lead¬ing producer of ilmenite in the world. In 1948 the extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec." The beginning of the modern titanium metal industry was in 1948, when E. The use of coal-dust fired reverberatory furnaces, or indeed of rever-beratory furnaces of any description, was for the Canadian Copper Co. a matter of necessity, and not of choice. For 20 years smelting had been done in blast furnaces alone, and with the Herreshoff furnaces used prior to 1904 there was no trouble in treating fine ores. But little flue dust was produced, and this, following the time-honored custom, was wetted down and put back with the charge. Whether the flue dust really smelted, or whether it was worn out by being chased around in a circle, was a problem that troubled no one. With the installation of modern blast furnaces and high-pressure blowing engines, in 1904, flue dust commenced to assert itself. Evidently more dust was made than could be smelted, but so many vital. problems engaged our attention at that time that this minor question was pushed to one side. In 1906, the details of blast-furnace smelting and the conversion of matte had been worked out to a satisfactory conclusion, and the ever-increasing piles of flue dust and fine ore on the stock yard demanded serious consideration. Numerous experiments in sintering, briquetting, mixing with converter slag, forming blocks of flue dust with green-ore fines and cement, and so on, were undertaken. None of these showed much promise. Our problem was still further complicated by the question of treating converter slag. The ore was basic, the slag was not needed as a furnace flux, and it was felt that under these conditions the old method of pouring slag in molds and resmelting in the blast furnace was an unnecessary expense. If the converter slag could be settled in basic-lined reverberatory furnaces, in which at the same time flue dust and green-ore fines could be smelted, two problems might thus be solved. Reverberatory practice with our ores was, however, an unknown factor. As carried on in the West, on siliceous ores and concentrates, at least 25 per cent. of fuel was required, and even this ratio depended greatly

Coal was mined to a small extent near Tuscaloosa, in Alabama, and even carried by boats to Mobile, half a century since. Professor Porter, and later, Professor R. T. Brumby, occupied themselves with the geology of the region, and it attracted the attention of Sir Charles Lyell, who visited the region. It is, however, to the two reports of Professor Tuomey, geologist to the State, published in 1850 and 1858, that we owe our first clear notions of the geology of the Alabama coal-fields. His work has, since 1873, been continued by Professor Eugene A. Smith, of the University of Alabama, whose valuable reports, extending and completing the work of his predecessor, are indispensable guides to the geological inquirer in this region. Mention should also be made of the investigations of Mr. R. P. Roth well, who, after three years of studies in parts of the Alabama coal-fields, read before the American Institute of Mining Engineers, in October, 1873," a brief but important paper calling attention to the great deposits of coal and iron-ore found therein, and to their economic importance. Having myself, during the past year, had an opportunity of visiting parts of this region, I have thought that it might be well to bring before the Institute some facts and considerations as to its geological and geographical characteristics, and the value of its mineral resources. It is well known that the great Appalachian coal-basin, stretching southwestward through western Tennessee and the northwestern corner of Georgia, terminates in northern Alabama in what is called the Warrior coal-field, which there covers an area of about 5000 square miles. STEEL is a general name applied to the alloys of iron and carbon. These alloys always contain , other elements such as manganese, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus. Manganese and silicon are usually considered to be alloying elements. Sulfur and phosphorus are regarded as impurities. Tradition has damned them both and, in addition to classifying them as impurities, has established the general impression that many of the ills of steels are the result of the presence of one or both of these elements. Metallurgists are inclined to question the soundness of this tradition. The fact that one blast-furnace plant is devoted entirely to the production of ferro-phosphorus which is used to rephosphorize basic open-hearth steel, and that sulfur is added to many heats of steel, indicates that these so- called impurities might also be classed as alloying elements, and that the tradition which damns them may not be altogether fair and well founded. A critical search through the technical literature on the effect of phosphorus on steel will disclose many references to its harmful effect. Most of these are general in character, but there has been a strong tendency to accept this traditional belief in the harmful effect of the element.

WITH the development of thin film techniques for the direct examination of metals in the electron microscope some new problems in quantitative metallography have become apparent. In order to obtain certain contrast effects in the electron optical image when examining thin films from alloys containing dispersed phases, it is essential to use films of a thickness at least two or three times greater than that of the mean particle diameter of the dispersed phase. From micrographs of such specimens it may be desired to obtain the volume fraction of the dispersed phase and the number of particles of the phase in a unit volume of the matrix. A model for the low-temperature peak, LTP, in fcc metals is presented. In high stacking fault energy metals, e.g., aluminum and nickel, it is proposed that a reversible dislocation glide and climb process might give rise to the observed high relaxation strengths and activation energies equivalent to volume self-diffusion values. In low stacking fault energy metals such as copper, gold, and silver, dislocation climb is energetically unfavorable at T < 0.5 Tm and the relaxation process is therefore mainly one of reversible glide. This model is used to explain the effect of a change in grain size and impurities on the LTP. THE low-temperature grain boundary damping peak, LTP, in spectroscopically pure aluminum,&apos; copper,17&apos; gold,2 nickel,3 and silver4 has recently been the subject of a detailed investigation by our laboratory. The main results are summarized in Table I. An empirical relationship was found between the peak relaxation strength, AE, and the width of the dissociated dislocation, do,* given by: do = µa2/24p? (Ref. 5) [I] where p is the shear modulus, y is the stacking fault energy,6-8 and a is the lattice parameter, Table 11. 4E is plotted against do in Fig. 1. Two regions are apparent: region (a)! which contains all but one of the metals, where AE decreases linearly with increasing do, i.e,, AE 1/do; and region (b), where ?E is approximately independent of do. A similar trend is observed when the ratio Qp/QL is plotted as a function of do, Fig. 2. (Qp and Ql are the activation energies for the peak and for lattice diffusion, respectively). In the past, when Qp and QL were found to be comparable, the relaxation peak was explained in terms of grain boundary sliding.10 The equivalence of Q, and Qb. the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, prompted the suggestion that it was a consequence of reversible grain boundary migration on an atomic scale." A new model for the LTP, which is based on the experimental relationships in Figs. 1 and 2, is presented. In region (a) it is suggested that stress relaxation occurs through the reversible glide and climb of grain boundary dislocations; in region (b) only reversible glide can take place. The resultant effect on the grain boundary might be sliding or "a bowing out", but, since the total distance moved will be 50A, the atomic movements are considered of primary im- portance. The first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lurmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgom Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite&apos;s experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. In late May, at its final session in Nairobi, Kenya, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) narrowly rejected the US proposal for a new International Resources Bank suggested by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The proposal was defeated by a roll-call vote of 33 to 31, with most of the nay votes cast by communist countries, and with 89 of the less-developed countries abstaining or absent.

The historical development of the concept of contact angle hysteresis is reviewed. The measurements of contact angles reported in literature have all been made under static conditions. For the measurement of dynamic advancing and receding contact angles, four methods are described together with an evaluation of their precision. Three of these methods were adapted from devices already used for the measurement of static contact angles. The fourth method uses a new principle and apparatus and is the most accurate. While the relationship between surface tensions and the contact angle was extablished as early as 1805 by T. Young,&apos; it was only in 1890 that the existence of contact angle hysteresis was reported by Lord Rayleigh. His observations, however, remained almost unnoticed. With the invention of froth flotation, the contact angle and its behavior became the subject of investigation. In 1907, L. Sulman and collaborators investigated the cause of discrepancies between recorded values of contact angles. They found that certain variations existed in most cases, but that definite maximum and minimum values of contact angles are obtainable. The difference between the maximum and the minimum contact angle in a given system was termed "hysteresis" by Sulman. First attempts to explain hysteresis were made by E. Edser.
