The total production of oil in Kentucky during the year 1943 reached 7,010,776 bbl., which is more than at any time since 1930. Of this total, 5,287,659 bbl. was produced from the counties west of the Cincinnati arch, 692,359 bbl. from the 18 new pools opened during the year, and 3,260,765 from the Smith Mills pool, which was discovered in August of 1942. This is an important increase in western Kentucky in spite of the low price of crude, and demonstrates effectively the desire of the industry to cooperate in meeting the increased demands made by the war. Western Kentucky Two deep tests were drilled in the Kentucky portion of the Mississippi Embayment this year. Both were drilled to test the St. Peter. One well, drilled in Marshall County by the Adams Oil and Gas Co., did not encounter any St. Peter sandstone but drilled 650 ft. of formation below the position of the St. Peter and above the true Knox dolomite. The other well, in Ballard County, was reported to have tested the St. Peter and to have been temporarily abandoned at 3069 ft. At this depth the well probably was stopped in about the same formation as the Marshall County well. No accurate information is available on the Ballard County well. Several new producing areas were added to the list of fields in the western Kentucky coal basin, in Daviess, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties. The Smith Mills pool was enlarged and production was found in the McClosky (Ste. Genevieve) in addition to the Cypress sandstone from which much of the earlier production had been obtained. There was some interest during the year in testing the Devonian and Silurian formations in the area south and east of the western Kentucky coal basin. In the fall of 1943, a 15 to 20-bbl. well was drilled in Allen County and two more wells are now being drilled. The production was obtained from within a few feet of the base of the Chattanooga black shale, probably in the upper Silurian. One well in Simpson County was drilled completely through the Silurian section before it was abandoned. Several wells were drilled in Logan, Todd and Christian Counties to test the Devonian where it is thinned by removal of the upper formations before deposition of the Chattanooga shale. None of these wells was successful but several other locations are now being tested. The Silurian thins in like manner on the eastern flank of the coal basin as the crest of the Cincinnati arch is approached, and it is along this thinning edge that such fields as the LeGrande, Logsdon Valley, Magnolia, Bowling Green and the Barren County pools were developed. A number of wells were drilled around these old pools in an effort to extend them, some of which were successful. The wells listed this year in Larue, Hardin, Barren, Hart and Warren Counties were drilled in the search for other such fields.

A process for recovery of greater than 99% of the copper contained in acid leach solutions by sulfide precipitation using hydrogen sulfide as a hydrometallurgical reagent has been developed. The process incorporates the concept of hydrogen sulfide addition to recycled copper sulfide solids in a turbulent flow area where further precipitation or agglomeration occurs to increase the effective particle size of the copper sulfide precipitate. Because the recycled solids provide a larger number of particles upon which momentary excesses of hydrogen sulfide are absorbed, oversulfidization of the product is prevented. Copper sulfide precipitates produced in this manner in a laboratory test reactor showed greatly improved physical characteristics compared to copper sulfide precipitates obtained by conventional direct precipitation in which H2S is bubbled directly into acid leach liquor. Copper sulfide precipitates were evaluated and compared by use of filtration tests and settling rate studies. Electron microscopic examination of the solids confirmed the presence of larger particles in reactor-precipitated copper sulfide. Flotation was examined as an alternative to filtration for recovery of CuS precipitates and was found to achieve complete CuS removal without addition of collector or frothing reagents in a period of 2 min. In the same test reactor, a rapidly floatable CuS precipitate was also formed by mixing H2S with acid liquors used to leach crushed copper oxide-copper sulfide ore (LPF process). In the presence of gangue from the crushed ore, flotation of both natural and reactor-produced copper sulfides resulted in recovery of better than 90% of the copper contained in the crushed ore.

INTRODUCTION The western USA contains significant coal reserves in seams 10 feet or more in thickness which lie too deep for surface mining. As part of a demonstration of the use of two legged shield supports in the United States, Kaiser Steel Corporation, under contract to the US government used the longwall method to mine a ten foot thick coal seam in New Mexico. Caliper type shield supports and double drum shearers were used in three longwall panels. During the test, technical, production, and safety data were collected to objectively evaluate the performance of the shields in mining the thick coal seam. This paper presents discussions of practical operating experience and summary statistics to aid the mining industry in planning longwall mines in similar conditions.

RECENT developments in the Turner Valley gas and oil field, 40 mi. southwest of Calgary, Alberta, have indicated a large producing crude-oil area. Drilling be¬gan in Turner Valley in 1913 but no major developments took place until the fall of 1924, when Royalite No. 4 well at a depth of 3740 ft. in the upper part of the Paleozoic (Mississippian) limestone obtained a production - of 20,000 M cu. ft. of gas with a content of about one imperial gallon of naphtha (73° A.P.I.) per M cu. ft. This well produced as much as 600 bbl. of naphtha per day, and until abandonment in 1934 produced 911,313 bbl., which together with the gas sold was valued at about $5,000.000.

On one occasion when it seemed desirable to reveal under the microscope not only the metallic structure of an alloy, but certain small non-metallic inclusions that are ordinarily obliterated by etching, it was discovered that, by partly eclipsing the illuminating pencil of light rays, the residual light was thrown on the object from one side and the structure was brought out in relief. At the same time, the non-metallic inclusions were retained in clear view. In this first demonstration of lighting obliquely through the objective a card was thrust part way into the light beam between the arc iris and the light filter; the shadow of the card on the filter served to locate its position. Next several stiff-paper disks of various diameters were mounted on flexible wires; some plasticine on the other end of the wires made it easy to adjust and maintain a disk at any desired position in the light beam. To facilitate manipulation, an assortment of disks was mounted on a wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. The purpose of partly eclipsing the light beam was discussed in an earlier paper.' There it was pointed out that the usual methods of illuminating opaque objects for microscopic examination lend an unnatural appearance to the view, while the new method, which has been termed conical illumination, revels the true relationship of constituents by simulating natural lighting. In nature, all objects are lighted diffusely, or by light predominating from one direction, or by a combination of diffuse and directed light. Under these conditions, objects appear to have three dimensions—they possess relief. The kind of illumination known to metallographists as vertical or axial results in an unnatural appearance, as a large proportion of the illuminating rays are parallel to the line connecting the eye with the object, a condition almost never met in nature. A recent visit with the engineering students of the Western University of Pennsylvania to the Keeling coal-mine on the south side of Pittsburgh furnished interesting matter to communicate, as may be the case, however, with regard to the striking features of any of our well-arranged larger collieries; for every mine surely appears unique as a whole, though description fails to give that impression, except in particulars.

THIS paper has been prepared with the principal objective of recording the results of the Bureau of Mines exploration of five major clay deposits in the Western Region. It is based mainly on data contained in unpublished Bureau of Mines reports. Acknowledgment is made to the Federal Geological Survey for its cooperative work with the Bureau of Mines, to the various State geological and mining departments, and other State and local agencies. CLAY EXPLORATION BY THE BUREAU OF MINES Much has been written and published on clays and clay deposits relating to their refractory, ceramic, and other qualities but such literature is lacking in analyses of the available alumina content of the clays and provides little indication of their possibilities as a source of alumina. With this new objective in view, a great many of the known clay deposits were reexamined and new ones discovered. The Bureau of Mines made preliminary examination of numerous areas in the western United States. Five of those most favorably indicated were systematically drilled, and in each a large amount of high-alumina clay has been found. These five major projects are Molalla and Hobart Butte, in western Oregon; Cowlitz-Castle Rock, in southwestern Washington; Lone, in California; and the Olson-Troy area in Idaho (Fig. I). Preliminary scout drilling was done in the Stockton deposit at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; the Whiteware deposit near Lewistown, Mont.; and 13 areas in the Spokane or eastern Washington region, where the most favorably indicated area, known as the Excelsior, is now being drilled more systematically. Preliminary drilling was undertaken in numerous areas adjacent to the major deposits and others more remote. As a result, large additional clay possibilities were found. THE CLAY DEPOSITS The clay deposits under consideration are of the sedimentary or transported types, parts of which have been altered further by the agencies of weathering, ground water, or hydrothermal action. There are extensive deposits of residual clays in northern Idaho and in eastern Washington, but they have been found to be low in the available alumina and to contain much free quartz, mica, and unaltered feldspar. To be of value, they must first be subjected to beneficiation to remove these gangue minerals. The sedimentary clays have been derived largely from the decomposition, erosion, and transportation of granites, gneisses, schists, and basalts. At Molalla, some

BRETH,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-It was my privilege to visit in the last two months on behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines 10 mines where electric shot-firing systems controlled from outside the mine are installed. I will describe briefly what I saw in some of these mines, which are located in Utah, New. Mexico, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kansas. At a mine in Utah, 230-volt alternating current is used to fire the shots, which is taken from a small transformer in the substation. The shot-iring circuit is independent of all other wires and is tested for grounds every day. There are no lightning arresters on the firing circuit. Porcelain insulators are used inside of the mine, and glass outside. The switches are situated as follows: One in the substation, one in, the shot-firer's cabin, two at each cross entry; where the shot-firing circuit crosses the trolley wire a switch is placed on either side of the entry in series with the shot-firing circuit. The miners are checked in and out of the mine. The coal is undercut and is shot down with permissible explosive, the shots being connected in multiple. There are 75 to 110 shots fired each day. A great many times there are no missed shots. If not more than two or three are missed they are left until next day. The fan is kept running at full speed when the shots are fired. The shot-firing switch is closed only once and the whole mine is shot at once. At another mine in Utah, power wires are used for shot-firing circuits; 500-volt, direct current is used to fire the shots. The only sizes of wire used outside of the power wires are Nos. 8 and 14 B. & S. gauge. The return is connected to the pipe lines and track. Porcelain insulators are. used inside of the mine.

As already announced, the Arizona Meeting of the Institute is to be held from the 18th to the 25th of September. There will be a special train from New York City to Arizona and return, to take members and guests of the Institute to the meeting. The Committee in charge consists of Walter Douglas, Chairman, Cleveland E. Dodge, John C. Greenway, Arthur S. Dwight and Julius Kruttschnitt, Jr., and while the plans of this Committee are not complete, it may be announced that the train will be run with the requisite number of Pullman, dining and baggage cars to accommodate those who desire to go, which will accompany the party during the entire week of the Arizona Meeting as per the following program, including, of course, the visit to the Grand Canyon. As soon as details have been worked out, a circular will be issued giv¬ing full information concerning the trip.

DURING an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investiga-tion was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this sys-tem as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. S. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon system8 was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essen-tial features, except the temperature of the peritectic line above 830° C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centered cubic with a lattice constant of 2.848 A.. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexag-onal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will be adhered to in the present paper.

Previously the authors showed that the Gilvarry equation correctly describes the distribution of fragment size in single fracture, provided the exoclastic particles showing original surface of the specimen are removed from the distribution. In the present work this conclusion has been strengthened in two respects. First, it has been shown that the existence of two peaks in the differential distribution for the endoclastic particles, corresponding to the effect of surface and volume flaws in the interior of the specimen, can be demonstrated from the average of data for a large number of specimens. Second, it has been shown by means of a Coulter counter that data obtained from specimens fractured in gelatin display the behavior at fragment sizes approaching 1 p which is demanded by the limiting form of the Gilvarry equation in this case. In previous work, a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size in single fracture of a brittle solid has been given by Gilvarry,' based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. Experimental work has been reported by Gilvarry and Berg-str~m,~ confirming the theory in its broad outlines. Subsequently, Gilvarry and Bergstrom extended the theoretical discussion to include comminution and presented experimental data bearing on this point. They have described further experimental results for the case of single fracture recently. The experimental evidence regarding single fracture was rather convincing. However, it was based on only five specimens for which fragment sizes were determined by sieve analyses and three for which measurements in the finer sizes were made on a Coulter counter. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the experimental results as obtained by means of both sieve analyses and the Coulter technique. In the former case, sufficient specimens are included so that the average data should vield ac- curately the detailed behavior of the distribution function for the coarser fragment sizes. In the latter case, measurements for the finer sizes are reported which correspond to single fracture more closely than prior results and fill a lacuna left in the experimental verification. In addition, an extension of the theory given recently bGilvarry for the case of fracture of a two-dimensional solid will be outlined, and experimental results obtained by him will be discussed.6 THREE-DIMENSIONAL CASE Gilvarry' has shown that the Schuhmann size modulus is a measure, in a sense specified later, of the number of activated edge flaws in a specimen undergoing single fracture. Single fracture is defined as that resulting from a single instantaneous application of energy, such as the blow of a hammer whose motion is halted when fracture begins. Plural fracture consists of a short sequence of single fractures, as in a jaw or gyratory crusher; multiple fracture obtains when many applications of energy are made, as in a ball mill. The Griffith flaws associated with fracture of a specimen are flaws occurring within the volume of the body, on the new surfaces created within its interior and on the new edges (intersections of two surfaces) within the body. Fracture proceeds by activation of flaws in the volume of the specimen, in the fracture surfaces throughout its interior, and in the edges produced by intersection of fracture surfaces. If all the flaws and all groups of flaws are distributed at random, independently of other flaws or groups thereof, it has been shown by Gilvarry that the distribution function for fragment size has the form of a Poisson distribution. The fraction y, by weight or volume, passing a sieve of mesh size x is given by where k is an average spacing of activated edge flaws, j2 is an average amount of surface containing one activated surface flaw and i3 is an average volume corresponding to an activated volume flaw. The trend initiated in January 1936, of stabilized gasoline prices, increased demand and extraordinary drilling activity, continued in California during the year 1937. Crude prices were maintained during the year at the highest level since September 1930. Wildcat activity with resultant new discoveries and development of proven acreage were greater than in any year since 1928. Many fields in California in former years have been produced at full capacity, with consequent loss of reservoir energy, but at the present time continued activity is maintained to develop adequate reserves, so that production in these fields can be taken at a rate to correspond with good operating practice. Naturally, this good operating practice will be influenced to some degree by gas outlets and, in certain instances perhaps, by oil outlets. In any event, these last two controlling features will result in favorable rather than detrimental operation. In fields producing from great depths, ultimate production will be practically limited to the flowing and compressor life of the well, since there is as yet no economical method for pumping wells below depths of approximately 7000 ft. Experience has shown, however, that such pumping difficulties will be overcome and that production secured by pumping will add some to reserves established on the flowing life of the wells. California continued to operate under voluntary curtailment, but with unlimited transfers of allowable between various fields. Even though there was at all times considerable production above the Umpire's established quota, a constantly increasing demand reduced storage during the year. This increasing demand was due mainly to the rapid rise in Pacific foreign shipments from May to September. It is questionable, however, whether this favorable condition will be maintained over a prolonged period. (See Fig. 1.) With the rapid acceleration of the cost of shovel dippers and major standard shovel clipper rebuild components, maintenance management at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Bingham Canyon mine initiated a dipper maintenance and rebuild program. The program focused on extending the service life of the shovel dipper, reducing field labor in maintaining dippers, and lowering shovel dipper rebuild costs. While comprehensive evaluation of the program is still underway, preliminary benefits of the program indicate: •Reduced field ,gelding for shovel dipper field maintenance, •Fewer dipper rebuild units entering the shop, and •Reduced dipper rebuild costs per unit.

A few years ago, the writer encountered a problem that, at first, seemed to be due to peculiar conditions affecting grain growth. Large cups made from heavy metal failed in the first drawing operation in the process of making seamless tubes. The metal, as cast, appeared to be sound and strong; it rolled successfully and withstood the first cupping operation, but on the first draw it failed, with a crystalline fracture. The failure appeared in the slightly worked part of the bottom of the cup, and microscopic examination revealed exceptionally large grains. Knowing the general conditions governing recrystallization of brass, which were later published by Mathewson and Phillipsll an investigation was outlined with the idea of including various conditions under which new grains might form, and which would include the effect that a previous anneal might have upon the anneal following. These conditions were produced by annealing specimens of brass at five different temperatures, indenting them with a 10-mm. ball under four different pressures, and then reannealing at each of the five temperatures five specimens each of which had been annealed at one of the five temperatures. Preparation of Specimens The material used was cartridge brass 0.400 in. thick, having the following composition: Copper 66.60 per. cent., zinc 33.35 per cent., lead 0.02 per cent., iron 0.03 per cent. This was rolled with 35 per cent. reduction after a 700" C. anneal. Fig. 1 shows the structure of this original bar on which all subsequent anneals were made. Pieces 1 in. (2.5 cm.) wide and 3 in. long were prepared and annealed for 1/2 hr. at 450°, 550°, 650°, '750°, and 850" C. Each of these pieces are indented under the Brinell test with a 10-mm. ball at 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 kg. pressure. Then, sets of five pieces from each of the original anneals were reannealed at 450°, 550°, 650°, 750°, and 850" C.

A general model which represents not only batch but also continuous flotation in multi-cell machines is presented. This model considers both the size distribution and the distribution of flotabilities in a size class for valuable mineral particles in the pulp. The general expression is shown to reduce to several previously reported models. In addition, a number of new models are found to arise for different specific assumptions concerning the flotability distribution and/or the size distribution of the particles undergoing flotation. Several of these new models are tested experimentally using laboratory-scale batch and pilot-scale continuous data. Model parameters are estimated from this data and a comparison of calculated recoveries and those experimentally determined are presented. Finally, the influence of the feed rate, aeration rate and valuable mineral content of the feed on the recovery is examined.

Edward Payson Mathewson EDWARD PAYSON MATHEWSON, President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgi-cal Engineers, was born in Montreal, Canada, Oct. 16, 1864, of Scotch-Irish ancestors. After preparation in private and public schools, he graduated from McGill University with the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science, in 1885, having specialized in mining engineer-ing and metallurgy. He spent the succeeding summer as a surveyor with the Canadian Geological Survey, being employed in the lake region of Ontario. The following spring he left Canada for Colorado, where he immediately obtained a position as assayer with the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. Within three years he became superintendent of the plant, and his success in this position brought him to the attention of the Guggenheim family, whose employ he entered in 1897. He was first in charge of their Pueblo plant, but was soon transferred to their refinery at Perth Amboy, N. J. During the succeeding five years he was in charge of important smelting operations conducted by the firm in Mexico and South America. In June, 1902, Mr. Mathewson accepted a position at the Washoe reduction works at Anaconda, soon thereafter becoming manager of the property. It is unnecessary to recount the improvements and enlarge-ments instituted at that plant under his management, until it became the Mecca of all metallurgists visiting the United States. The esteem in which Mr. Mathew-son was held, not only by the men directly under him, but by all his fellow citizens, was expressed in a send-off such as probably no other plant manager has ever received, when he left Anaconda in October, 1916, to accept the general managership of the British America Nickel Corporation, at Nickelton, Ont., Canada. Soon thereafter Mr. Mathewson accepted an appoint-ment as director of the American Smelting and Refining Co., acting as consulting metallurgist for the company and its subsidiaries. In November, 1919, he resigned this position and opened an office in New York City as a consulting metallurgist.

THE mining engineer must have a chest of books snug enough for a camelback or to be stowed away in a canoe; at the lowest possible cost, as he needs it the most in those early years when he earns the least; but at the same time one having an unusually wide range, for he may have to cut down a forest, put up a sawmill, build mine towns, construct dams, power houses, power lines, and railroads. IN 1948, as part of a program to expand the copper tube mill facilities of the American Brass Co. plant at Kenosha, Wisconsin, plans were formulated to convert the 100 ton capacity anode casting furnace at the Great Falls, Montana plant of the Anaconda Co. to the production of 3 in. phosphor -ized billets. The furnace was rebuilt completely and construction was started on an addition to the building. Members of the Great Falls staff visited various billet casting plants to draw upon the experience of other producers of this type of casting. Many features of other plants were incorporated into the Great Falls plant but, in addition, many new designs were made and perfected to make the plant the most advanced of its type. Construction was begun in 1949, with the intention of having the plant in production in the early part of 1951. In January 1951, as the plant was being rushed to completion, the government placed restrictions on the production of copper tubing. As a result, work was halted and the plant lay idle for two years. Interest was reactivated in May 1953 with the lifting of restrictions on copper. Plans were laid to go into production in July and the first charge was taken out July 1, 1953. Basically the plant is designed to produce from cathode copper a 3 in. diam billet, 50 in. long. weighing 110 lb, and containing 0.013 to 0.036 pct P, at a rate of 150,000 Ib per operating day. These billets are to be pierced and drawn into tubing. Furnace The furnace is a 100 ton capacity reverberatory type, gas fired furnace; 21 ft long and 9 ft wide. Gas is introduced to the furnace through two 38 hole Mettler gas burners. These burners are of chrome nickel alloy with four jets per hole. The furnace is charged with cathodes from the Electrolytic Copper Refinery plus return scrap from the casting operation by means of a Wellman Seaver Morgan Co. 7,000 lb capacity charging machine. The charge crane has a 20 ft boom and fork peel provided with an air ram to push material off the peel. The machine travels on overhead tracks and can be moved in any direction. The boom can be raised and lowered and swung through an arc of 180". With well stacked units of 6,000 lb, an experienced operator can put the first charge into the furnace in 40 min. After charging, the steel framed silica brick charge door is put in place and sealed with clay. After melting and skimming off the slag, the copper is blown until an oxygen content of 0.40 pct is reached. The metal is then heated to 2180°F, covered with coke, and poled. Poling is continued until a 3 in. diam test billet, 8 in. long, shows a flat set. The oxygen content is usually 0.030 pct at this time. At the end of poling, a temperature of 2160" to 2180°F is desired. In the side of the furnace opposite the charging door is the taphole slot, extending 36 in. upward from the bottom of the furnace. It is 4½ in. wide at the outside face and widens to 9 in. at the inside face of the furnace. It is filled with a wet mixture of sand, fireclay, and crushed coal. Flow of metal
