Long-wave short-pulse radar has been shown capable of exploring to distances of several hundred feet through massive, dry rock salt. Exploration distances of 30 to 60 ft through bituminous coal and massive limestone, respectively, have also been demonstrated with low-power experimental radar equipment in underground mines. Working ranges up to 250 ft in limestone and coal are considered feasible. Radar reflections should be produced by all large electrically contrasting objects such as fault gouge masses, wet shattered ground, metallic mineralization, adjacent mine workings (dry or flooded), and abandoned drill holes. It is believed that radar can locate such obstacles in advance of underground mining through all massive rocks of low free-water content, including many igneous and metamorphic rocks. Three years of studies and experiments in radar exploration through rocks are reported.

INTRODUCTION IN our everyday life, visual perception plays perhaps a more important role than any of the other senses with which we are equipped by nature. It is, therefore, quite understandable that the average person associates 'with the term "atmospheric pollution," clouds of dust, palls of smoke or deposits of soot, phenomena which are so familiar to the residents of industrial cities. On the other hand, "air" is usually considered the prototype of the invisible, of the intangible, and any suspensions in the air which do not conform to this concept, are regarded as foreign to the atmosphere and thus as "pollution." According to Webster, the term "pollution" implies uncleanness, impurity, in short, something undesirable. Although the scientist often accepts popular concepts, he is generally inclined to suspect that apparently "obvious" phenomena imply, literally, "more than meets the eye." To show that this suspicion is also justified with regard to atmospheric pollution, is the objective of this discussion. It will be shown that what seems foreign to the air at first sight, is by nature an integral part of it, and that the more important aspects of pollution generally escape attention. THE ATMOSPHERIC CONSTITUENTS We can distinguish two classes of atmospheric constituents: the permanent gases, chiefly nitrogen, oxygen, traces of argon, neon, and others, and the variable constituents which include water in its different states, carbon dioxide, ozone, and various suspensions, either in gaseous, liquid or solid form. These suspensions, known by the collective term "Aerosol,"20 will be considered in detail. DUST There are two general types of aerosols: the first type is represented by the socalled "neutral" particle 3, commonly known as dust and experienced by everyone, as it is the more conspicuous type of suspensions. . It often represents a special problem to the mining engineer, the mechanical engineer, the industrial engineer, and many other professional men. Dust consists of finely divided solids derived from weathering, drilling, handling and preparation of rocks and coal. Dust may also consist of organic or inorganic particles resulting from manufacture of a variety of products such as flour, rubber, lime and steel, from traffic on land be it on the highways, on rails or in city streets, from decomposed vegetation or from volcanic eruptions. Perhaps the most reviled member of this class of suspensions is the soot and fly ashes from coal fires and other combustion processes. The cosmic source of dust, namely the injection of meteoric matter into the atmosphere, is of minor significance because the concentration of particles is exceedingly small despite the relatively large mass of material invades the earth’s atmosphere from space

INTRODUCTION Object RATHER large amounts of titanium minerals and some zircon and monazite are being recovered from dune sands about 10 miles west of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Southern Experiment Station, has been interested in developing additional large deposits of similar sands in other areas of Florida. The results of a field study have been published1 concerning the sands occurring on Trail Ridge which runs north and south about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville. This investigation was undertaken in order to identify the opaque titanium minerals occurring in Trail Ridge and because of the economic importance of Florida titanium minerals. Nature of the Problem The minerals present in the heavy fractions (sp gr > 2.94) of the sands are principally opaque minerals; staurolite, zircon, sillimanite, tourmaline, kyanite, rutile, a small amount of corundum, traces of the zinc spinel gahnite and garnet. Epidote, monazite, hornblende and titanite are present in other dune sands but these minerals were not noted in the samples collected on Trail Ridge. All of the minerals except those which are opaque can be readily identified by the usual petrographic methods. However, opaque minerals cannot be examined satisfactorily by transmitted light. Polished sections of the opaque-mineral grains were examined but these sections did not furnish useful information. Consequently, it was necessary to use means other than the usual petrographic methods to identify them. Previous Investigations of Heavy Minerals in Florida Sands Martens2 has described the heavy minerals in the Florida beach sands and has classified the opaque minerals as ilmenite with minor amounts of leucoxene. Miller3 studied a number of sands collected by Ross and Mertie in Florida. He states that the material from the Florida beach and dune sands that commonly has been called ilmenite has essentially the chemical composition of the material that has been called arizonite.4 The X ray diffraction patterns of several samples indicated that the supposed ilmenite is essentially amorphous, with only weak lines corresponding to ilmenite, and hence the material is unlike the type of arizonite from Arizona. Opaque Titanium Minerals Rutile is essentially titanium dioxide. However, as pointed out by Dana,5 important amounts of Fee and Fe3 as well as Cb and Ta are reported in some analyses.

THE application of scientific methods to the investigation of natural laws and to the conduct of the useful arts which are founded upon them, is year by year mitigating the asperity and enlarging the outcome of human endeavor. More notably, perhaps, are these the facts in that system of productive and constructive arts of, which engineering is the general name. In metallurgical engineering especially, within the period of our own recollection, how rapid has been the rate and how wide the scope of progress: the scientific discovery and mining of metalliferous veins; the economical separation and reduction of ores of every grade; the production and regulation of high temperatures; the varied improvements in the manufacture of iron, in saved heat and work, in uniformity and range of products ; and, most important of all, the creation and the utilization, to be counted by the million tons a year, of the cheap constructive steels. Wonderful as this range and degree of development may appear to the public eye, the close and thoughtful observer must, nevertheless, conclude that neither the profession nor the craft of engineering may congratulate themselves too complaisantly, but that they should rather acknowledge to each other the embarrassing incompleteness of the union between engineering science and art. There is a small school of philosophers whom we may designate as original investigators, men who come close to nature, who search into first principles, and who follow that scientific and therefore fruitful method by which the relations of matter and force are discovered, classified, and brought within the reach of practice. These wonderful - men do not indeed create the laws of nature, as they sometimes almost seem to, but they go up into the trembling mountain and the thick darkness and bring down the tables upon which they are written. * President's Opening Address. Otto Schaaber (Institut für Harterei-Technik, Bremen-Schönebeck, Germany)— Langenberg, Pestel, and Honeycutt gave an interesting example of the grain refining effect nonstationary magnetic fields may execute on a solidifying metal. Probably some additional comments, based on more than a decade of experience with this method of influencing crystallization, may be useful. They refer to an attempt to explain the mechanism of grain refinement by such fields, and to recent European developments which have not been mentioned in the paper. I. During studies of the temperature distribution in a metal body near the phase boundary solid/liquid, an anomaly was observed under certain special conditions: a) direction of heat transfer as horizontal as possible, b) steady state (equilibrium, i.e,, solidification resp. melting rate exactly zero). In the liquid phase, immediately adjacent to the phase boundary, the temperature was found to be constant over an appreciable distance in spite of a high value of heat transfer (40.000 to 70.000 keal/ m2h).3 Convection, which might explain this phenomenon, could not be observed. Therefore another explanation had to be sought. The assumption that a metallic melt, especially at temperatures near the point of solidification, contains some sort of atomic arrangement with a higher degree of order than the surrounding liquid, now is generally accepted. Considering the differences in energy between such an arrangement and its environs, a transport of heat even in absence of any temperature gradient is conceivable by continued formation and redissolution of regions with a higher degree of order, i.e., with lower energy level.3 At this stage, it was not necessary to postulate any special condition as to the form or size of these regions or the distance between arrangements to be newly formed and those to be redissolved. However, a simple consideration shows that an energy transfer from one region to another will only be possible without loss of energy, if the distance between will be equal to the lattice parameters, and if, secondly, crystallographic axis or planes will be parallel.4 By the way, this assumption might give a reasonable explanation of the well known orientation effect of the heat flow during solidification. Any measures to prevent columnar crystallization should act upon this ordering mechanism: a) the regions with a lower energy (higher order) should not be allowed to arrange themselves parallel to the direction of heat flow, and their growth should be disturbed; b) all conditions leading to an appreciable heat flow of uniform direction should be avoided or removed. Condition a) may be satisfied by a physical force preferably under 90 deg to the main axis of the columnar crystals (i.e., parallel to the solidification front) acting on the ordered regions; condition b) by equalizing any differences in

The gravity magnitudes obtained by means of observations with the Eötvös balance in the field are necessarily resultant or total effects due to all abnormalities of mass distribution, including even the effects due to the ellipticity and rotational motion of the whole earth. Since the object of the survey is to isolate the effects which arise solely from some particular subterranean feature, and to deduce therefrom the configuration and extent of this feature, the first step is to eliminate from the observed effects all those due to "disturbing" (i. e., unwanted) features, whether above or below the surface of the ground. The disturbing features have different characteristics, according to their situation relative to the center of the balance and to the horizontal plane through the foot of the balance, or station point; this diversity was recognized by Eotvos, who divided the total effects into so-called Normal, Terrain, Topographical, Cartographical and Subterranean effects. This classification has been adhered to by most subsequent investigators, but the writer prefers to employ the term "three-dimensional," which really indicates the essential character of the class of effect known as "Subterranean," at any rate from the standpoint of the computer of effects. Before disturbing effects can be eliminated, the features must be measured up or surveyed, whether by topographical, mining, or boring methods, and then the effects of each feature calculated and subtracted from the total observed effects. After this the problem of interpreting the residual effects will itself necessitate the computation of the assumed feature, or even a series of trial features. The task of computing gravity effects is therefore of great importance. In the early work, by Eötvös himself, the computation practically ceased when the terrain and topographical effects had been calculated, but later surveys have demanded an ever-increasing extension in the technique of computation. Certainly in surveys designed to locate minerals, particularly ores, the calculations have to be extended far beyond those of Eötvös, while his methods of computing both terrain

Fine grinding cannot be accomplished in machines in which the component parts move in definite and restricted paths with respect to each other. Such machines are crushers. A "grinding mill" may be defined as any machine in which the crushing elements are free to make direct contact with each other but are kept from doing so by the sand to be crushed. Such a machine must possess the ability to give numerous contacts per unit of time. Upon consideration, one will see that this definition nearly includes the old Chilean and Huntington mills, the "rolls" and the stamp mill. It definitely includes all forms of ball, pebble and rod mills. The ideal (perfeet) grinding mill may be defined as one in which the crushing elements are identical in shape and substance and possess perfect freedom of motion with respect to one another. Of the mills mentioned, only the ball and pebble mills come under this definition of the ideal mill. Even the rod mill fails to get a place under this definition of the perfect mill. Modern Fine-grinding Mill In current practice fine grinding is performed in rotating cylinders1 partially loaded with hard objects, the agitation of which accomplishes the crushing or grinding of the rock or ore. The hard objects called "grinding media" nearly always are steel or some other alloy of iron. Hard rock (flint pebbles) have been and still are used to a limited extent. When steel is used as the grinding substance, the form is the sphere or "ball." The combination of rotating cylinder and steel-ball grinding media is termed "ball mill." Shapes other than the sphere have been tried. Cylindrical grinding media also have been and are now used in grinding mills. When cylindrical media are used the mill is termed "rod mill." Mechanical Elements of Grinding Mills The mechanical elements of a grinding mill arc: (1) the rotating element, (2) the grinding media, (3) the rotating means.

IT has been frequently observed that, when metal crystals are bent and annealed or when they are bent at elevated temperatures, the asterism of the Laue spots is split discontinuously into tiny intensity maxima. This finding indicates that segmented crystallites or subgrains are produced, which are relatively undistorted within themselves but which differ slightly in orientation from their neighbors. The following viewpoints have been put forward concerning the nature of this segmentation process: 1—Crussard' has described the phenomenon as "re-crystallization in situ." According to this mechanism, the deformed lattice recrystallizes on heating into an aggregate of comparatively strain-free subgrains separated from one another by low-angle boundaries and having nearly the same orientation as the original crystal. This process differs from the classical type of recrystallization in that the latter involves the formation of grains having quite different orientations from that of the mother crystal. 2—A similar but more detailed picture has been advanced by Cahn' who adopted the term "polygonization." In this interpretation, the plastic bending of lattice planes results in an excess of dislocations of one sign, but at suitable temperatures these dislocations migrate along slip planes and collect in localized regions to form an array of low-angle boundaries. Concurrently, the lattice segments between the boundaries lose their curvature and elastic strain. 3—The "cell formation" concept of Wood and co-workers: unlike the two hypotheses cited, postulates that the segmentation of the lattice is basically a mode of deformation and is not an annealing phenomenon. Cell formation appears to compete more effectively with respect to the normal slip process as the deformation temperature is increased and as the strain rate is decreased. The present work was performed on 3.2 mm diameter 99.99' pct Zn single crystals, grown from the melt in a gradient furnace. The major impurity was 0.003 pct Fe. The crystal orientations ranged from those with basal plane parallel to the rod axis to those with the basal plane almost perpendicular to the rod axis. The specimens were bent on templates to effective radii varying from 14.2 to 1.3 cm at the temperatures from —196" to 100°C. In each case, the axis of bending was parallel to the basal plane. Subsequent annealing was carried out at temperatures from —196" to 400°C. Back-reflection Laue pictures were taken on the convex surface of the bent specimens, before and after annealing. This procedure was found to yield better resolution of the detail in the diffraction spots than did the previously used Laue transmission technique. Some X-ray pictures of rods bent at —196" and —78°C were taken at these respective temperatures without intermediate warming to room temperature. In this paper, no attempt will be made to theorize on subsidence. Only known data and actual facts will be given, with a few exceptions noted where other factors and outside influences tend to change subsidence directly resulting from porphyry caving. The area under observation is known as the Southeast Extension of the East orebody. The orebody is irregular in outline and dips to the south and the east, extending in depth from about 425 ft. below the surface to 1050 ft. below the surface. In the upper horizon, the orebody is about 400 ft. long and 150 ft. wide. At 720 ft. below the surface, the ore outline is approximately 450 by 170 ft.; 70 ft. below this, it is 500 by 110 ft., with an extension at the north end to the east 270 by 120 ft. From this elevation to about 900 ft. below the surface, the ore spreads out to the cast and south, being about 700 by 500 ft. between these vertical limits. Below this it pinches out and at 1060 ft. below the surface is only 100 by 100 ft. The nearest point of the orebody—which is on the northwest side—is 600 ft. 'southeast of the Sacramento shaft. The country rock is all porphyry. Fig. 1 is a vertical east-west section showing orebody and original surface. The surface over the orebody was fairly regular and in this area and adjacent to it were portions of the surface plant, roads, and the main plant railroad to the concentrator. Fig. 2 is a map of the surface over the porphyry area. Caving operations started in April, 1925, at the approximate top of the orebody. The first lift was on the 600-ft. level; the ore was extracted by means of the Morenci timbered slide method and was from 425 to 455 ft. below the surface over an area of about 22,000 sq. ft. This lift was finished in May, 1926. The second lift, on the 650-ft. level, was already in production by May, 1926, so extraction of ore was continuous. This lift was 48 ft. high and covered an area of about 30,000 sq. ft. The ore from this lift was extracted by means of a modified Morenci timbered slide method. This lift was finished in March, 1927. I have taken the liberty of calling the researches herein mentioned industrial, to distinguish them from those strictly scientific, where every known appliance is used to insure accuracy in determining principles. The industrial researches are made to ascertain wherein we have failed to embody, in practice, the principles which have been fully demonstrated by the more purely scientific investigations. So far the researches have been mostly confined to the conditions of combustion as used in locomotive furnaces, although we have examined, to some extent, furnaces under marine and stationary boilers. The products of complete combustion are gases, and, knowing what we should have, it is at once shown by analyzing the products whether the desired reactions are taking place. In spite of imperfect furnaces, lack of system in the arrangement of grate-bars and exhaust nozzles, the results are not altogether vitiated, because the analyses are not closer than one-tenth of one per cent., as under the present conditions it is hardly possible to collect gas exactly under the same conditions at different times. All of 'our industrial operations have developed in the past few years so rapidly, nearly all of them paying, that,, until within the past three years, comparatively little attention has been given to their economy outside of the profession. Great corporations have not asked and considered the question in earnest, can we utilize our heat so as to produce the same effect at less cost? The applications of heat are so extensive, entering into every branch of industry, the principal power used to carry on metallurgical processes, to conduct transportation, that its econonlical generation becomes of universal importance; in fact, its economical generation and application is the leading industrial question of the day. It is stated by those who have given the subject much attention, that in our best steam-engines not over 10 per cent of the theoretical value of the fuel is utilized, and upon locomotives it is far less, probably not exceeding under the most favorable circumstances 5 or 6 per cent. In recent experiments made with the dynagraph, in drawing trains upon the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway from Cleveland to Erie, 941/2 miles, we found the force required to draw a stock train of 709 tons to be 2,498,396,320 footpounds, exclusive of the force to move the locomotive itself. The data and information compiled under Part I of this report are the results of experiments performed in the petroleum engineering laboratory under the supervision of W. F. Cloud, Associate Professor of Petroleum Engineering and William Schriever, Professor of Physics, University of Oklahoma. Problems Being Studied Most of the time has been spent in trying to determine the rate of flow and pressure gradient in a 4-in. flow tube 10 ft. long, which was packed with sand of various grain sizes. To date, only two kinds of sand have been packed in this tube: 60 to 80-mesh Canadian river sand, 60 to 80-mesh and 80 to 100-mesh Simpson sand. The original intention was to follow the same procedure and use the same types of crude under identical saturation pressures of both air and gas, as well as unsaturated (dead) oil, flowing the various crudes through several different sizes of both Canadian river and Simpson (Wilcox) sands, but lack of time has prevented such an intensive study of the problem. Some additional time has been spent flowing saturated and unsaturated crudes, similar to those used in the 4-in. tube, through 1-in. tubes, one of which was 2 ft. long and one 5 ft. long. The results obtained have been checked against those obtained by using the 4-in. tube, to obtain the relation of diameter and length of tube to rate of flow in similar sands. THERE exists in., the territory embraced between the summit of the Sierra Nevada and the coast a great dike and vein system that appears never to have been recognized in its entirety, nad many facts concerning it have never been published. This is important, not only in affording numerous clues bearing on the origin, nature, and age of the mercury deposits, and eliminating many controverted questions, but it. incidentally affords numerous facts bearing on the genesis of gold, copper, chromite, magnesite, dolomite, a type of calcite deposit, and numerous associated minerals. The mineral springs of the State almost without exception emanate from these dikes. A great range of the hydrocarbons also exists throughout the entire system of these dikes. Seepages from their, walls have frequently been mistaken as emanating from the inclosing sandstone and shale, resulting in heavy expenditures in the futile development of these Cretaceous beds, which contain no petroleum within the territory. The theory of mountain making by lateral or tangential pressure is inconsistent with some of the following recorded facts. The limitations of this paper do not admit of a description of each of the hundred or more mercury deposits embraced in the area, and therefore only typical examples will be described. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, is not submitted as complete, or as entirely accurate, but it is as nearly so as the notes at hand will admit. The field is too extensive to be completely covered by a single individual. The heavy continuous lines represent sections actually surveyed! The sections and extensions- in. dotted line are assumed, and are either unsurveyed, or -buried under younger beds. There are numerous branches connecting the great parallels that the small-scale map does not admit of plotting, even if the survey had been complete. Likewise, the conclusions in some instances may be faulty, but it is to be hoped that as a whole they may serve as a foundation on which a more complete structure may be built in the future.

This report presents the comments of members of the Institute's Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institute of Mining Engineers (London). This report is as follows: THEORY OF MINE VENTILATION Abstract of a report submitted June 16, 1925, to the Council of The Institution of Mining Engineers by a Special Committee Laws of Flow of Aib The law of flow of air in mine galleries is, at present, expressed by two formulas differing slightly in shape but both derived from the original hydraulic formulas of Chezy and others. These formulas are: The Atlcinson Formula.—Pa = KsV2, which in transformation becomes a3 where P = pressure producing flow; K = coefficient of friction; s = surface of the mine galleries; V = velocity of flow; Q = rate of flow; a = area of mine galleries. This formula is especially applicable to mine galleries, but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems we are dealing with changes produced in the same set of airways when K, s, and a are assumed not to change, and the only variables are P and Q. Great uncertainty prevails as to the exact values to be assigned to the coefficient K in different types of airway, as different workers have given widely differing values. This formula assumes: (I) That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure within the gallery. (2) That changes in volume within the limits of pressure ordinarily met with may be neglected. (3) That changes in density and viscosity and mode of flow of the air may be neglected. (4) That the coefficient K is a constant. (5) That P is proportional to the square of the velocity. We cannot find any reliable experimental work leading us to conclude how far these assumptions are justifiable in mining practice. The ultimate production from a natural reservoir of petroleum is inversely proportional to the gas-oil ratios existing during the producing life of the reservoir whenever gas is the major expulsive force in the recovery. In other words, in the period during which gas is the major expulsive force the ultimate production will be increased if the gas-oil ratio is decreased, and vice versa. This condition prevails in the greater number of the present producing districts. While this relation is difficult to prove from actual operation, on account of the present paucity of detailed observations, it must be admitted after a study of the forces and conditions governing the recovery of petroleum from natural reservoirs. Where gas and oil exist under pressure in sand interstices and water movement is not freely possible, the force expended in moving the oil to the well is the expansion and movement of the gas through the pressure differential existing between the interior of the reservoir and the well. If pressure and solution conditions in the untapped reservoir are such that the relation between gas and oil volumes at atmospheric conditions is as 100:1; and if during the producing period, until the gas is exhausted, the relation between the gas and oil volumes produced is 300:1, it follows that only one-third of the oil has been produced and the remaining two-thirds cannot be recovered unless some extraneous force is introduced into the reservoir. This serves to illustrate the importance of gas-oil ratio control during normal producing operations. Gas-oil Ratio Control Eliminating natural conditions in a reservoir, which govern gas-oil ratios, such as the physical properties of the oil and gas, the physical characteristics of the reservoir strata and the original pressure and solution conditions in the reservoir, which cannot be controlled by operation practice; and also eliminating operating conditions that apply to the reservoir as a whole, such as well spacing, well locations, relative completion dates, various penetrations and drilling practice; there remains but one condition in each well that influences the gas-oil ratio and that is

Wherever salt is extracted from the ground as an artificial brine produced by pumping down fresh water to dissolve the salt, subsidence of the overburden is a possibility, though apparently few cases of such subsidence have been noted and detailed records are wanting. This description is intended as a record of subsidence that may permit the forcasting of similar occurrences in other cases; the data were supplied largely by R. B. Lee, city engineer of Hutchinson, Kans. About eleven years ago, ground movement occurred at a neighboring salt plant, when the surface assumed the form of a shallow funnel. Movement was probably due to a flow of sand into a well through a poor seal or a broken casing. The salt deposit increases in thickness from the east until at Hutchinson, where the subsidence occurred, it is about 310 ft. thick. The interbedded layers of shale vary in thickness from mere traces to about 7 ft. While knowledge of the shale content of the beds is not exact, the log of a shaft 3 miles east of Hutchinson indicates that shale forms about 25 per cent. of the total thickness. This shaft does not reach the bottom of the salt by about 60 ft., but there is no reason to think that the lower part of the bed is different from the upper. Logs of wells sunk to the bottom are not sufficiently detailed to be of much value. Above the salt is the shale of the well-known Red Beds. The thickness of this is variable, principally because of its eroded surface, but at the mine it is 340 ft. This shale is variable in character and strength, but contains no strong members of limestone or sandstone. If the support is removed, very probably it will subside. The Arkansas River flows across the salt district and Hutchinson is situated on the flood plain. Between the top soil, which is about 8 ft. thick, and the shale is 60 to 100 ft. of water-bearing sand and gravel. The process of removing salt, at least in the case of the earlier wells with which we are concerned, is as follows: An 8-in. hole is put down through the sand and gravel by means of a drive pipe, which is bedded in the shale. Prom the top of the shale, a 6411. hole is drilled through the shale, to, or nearly to, the bottom of the salt. Casing is put in to a depth of about 140 ft. to shut off a water-bearing layer in the shale.

Many different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. Description" of Bits Tested 'I'he 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener, with 14' taper on the wings and a 90" angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 Ib. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 50 taper on the wings; this bit was formed with the Carr bit dies. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped bits made on the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5º taper and an angle of 100" between cutting edges.

Diatoms are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skelctons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of varying thicknesses. Diatomites Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition. Diatoms More than 8000 species of diatoms have been named and classified. Some are definitely classified as to their habitat; some are so well recognized as to their living conditions that they can be stated to be diagnostic types, and when encountered in a deposit determine the origin of the deposit.
