The following abstract of an unpublished treatise, prepared by me, on the geological formations and minerals of the State of Alabama, is deemed of interest to the Institute. This State, called after the river of the same name (which, formed by the junction of the Coosa and the Tallapoosa, waters, with its tributaries, more than half the State), is divided by its main watershed into a larger southern district, sloping south and southwest, and drained into the Gulf of Mexico, and a smaller northern district, sloping generally north and west, and drained into the Tennessee. Geologically the State may be divided (according to historical geology) according to the different formations it exhibits, among which I include the Azoic, the existence of which in Alabama has been doubted by some; or it may be divided (according to structural geology, as closely related to topography) into a north and northwestern, a middle, and a southern zone.

THE object of the writer is to call attention to a rather unique aggregation of economic products distributed over a line of succeeding formations about 3 mi. long, to be seen within a few miles of La Salle, Ill. Fig. 1 is an ideal section of the stratification exposed and exploited along a distance of 3 1/5 mi. in a southwesterly direction from the quarry of the Utica Hydraulic Cement Co. located near the historic site of Kaskaskia village to the Oglesby, shaft at Oglesby. No attempt has been made to cover the whole field, special mention only being made (with the exception of two places) of the operations found along the course or parallel to the direction assumed in the ideal section. I have used Fig. 2, after J. H. Bent and De Witt Kelly, to locate the relation of the La Salle anticline to the coal mines of this district and to show the operation of No. 1 and 3 mines of the Illinois Zinc Co.

The paper describes current activities in these coal fields, and improvement programs that are in progress, or are planned. Special emphasis is placed on improvements in mining and preparation practice, and expansion of production that have been accomplished by American equipment and technical assistance.

The Pima mine, Pima County, Ariz., a 53,500-tpd copper mine, is located 17 miles south of Tucson, Ariz. The mine is in a sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments striking east-north-east and dipping southeasterly. These sediments are intruded by a Tertiary quartz monzonite porphyry. The Paleozoic Permian (?) dolomites, limestones, and sandstones have been altered to calc-silicate skarn, marble, and quartzite. The overlying Mesozoic Triassic (?) clastic sediments have undergone some recrystallization and hydrothermal alteration. The clastic metasediments are divided into three distinct lithologic units: lithic arenite, arkose, and interbedded and overlying black argillite. Three types of hydrothermal alteration in the clastic rocks are propylitic alteration (epidote, chlorite, and quartz, with or without sericite), quartz-sericite alteration, and potassic alteration (K-feldspar, quartz, and sericite, with or without chlorite and calcite). The porphyry has undergone potassic alteration. Dominant structures are an east-west postmineral fault in the western part of the pit, and strong low angle faulting and shearing which truncates the ore body at depth. The two joint sets, one parallel to bedding and the other at right angles to bedding are prominent in the mine. Faulting is in two dominant directions, one striking northwest, dipping northeast, and the other striking northeast, dipping northwest. Economic mineralization is prediminantly disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite, and molybdenite-quartz veinlets. There are less important amounts of magnetite, hematite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite, and bornite. Mineralization is believed to be both structurally and chemically controlled.

The relationships describing the enhancement of permeability by firing explosives in boreholes have been derived and combined to yield permeability enhancement as, [ ] or the case in which the stress decays asymptotically as a power law kc and nc represent permeability and fracture density at the edge of the pulverized region near the cavity wall, f is a geometric attenuation factor, m is the dissipation due to real material effects, ko is the original permeability and rd is the scaled radius. This relationship has been compared with available measurements from the American nuclear shot "Hardhat", the French nuclear events in Hoggar granite and the chemical explosive shot in coal near Kemmerer, Wyoming. Significant correlation between this theory and the experimental measurement is observed. A comparison between single and multiple detonations shows that permeability enhancement falls off steeply near the shot; however enhancement can be considerable midway between two shots spaced 10 cavity radii apart. The degree to which enhancement, can be significant depends on material properties and fracture density. Porosity distribution from the explosive 1s the dominate parameter in permeability enhancement. Existing theories of permeability enhancement have also been reviewed.

In my experience, perhaps the most interesting problems came up during the testing, prospecting, developing and equipping of the Chuquicamata and Braden Copper Mines in Chile, and it is proposed in this article to give as briefly as possible what some of those problems were, their solutions, and the decisions made as to the different methods to be employed. The romance of mining is still a great lure to the young man who is making a choice of a profession to follow. The thought of travel to strange and out-of-the-way places, the glamor of pioneer life, the excitement of discovery, the constructive work of building something, entirely "from the grass roots up," or of reconstructing a played-out property and making a success of it-all of these phases have a strong appeal and often influence the young man in the choice of mining as a profession. To a very large extent the quality of a mild steel ingot is determined by the manner in which it is poured into the ingot mold and its behavior during the first few minutes after it has been poured. The formation of the solid rim of metal around the periphery of the mold, the effervescent action of the liquid steel within this solidified rim and the upward or downward movement of the metal level are indications of what is going on beneath the surface of the liquid metal, especially at the interface at which solidification occurs. Observation of this "rimming action" enables an experienced observer to predict the thickness of the sound skin of the ingot and the location and extent of cavities or "blowholes" caused by entrapment of gases. The control of rimming action at the hands of a skillful steel pourer is a vital part of the control of quality in mild steel sheet, and the behavior of the liquid steel during the rimming period is a useful criterion of the melting and refining practices employed in the open hearth. The behavior of rimming steel during solidification depends primarily upon the evolution of gases from the molten metal and it is therefore a problem of considerable interest to determine the nature and amount of the gases evolved. A number of attempts to determine either the amount or the analysis of the, evolved gases have been reported. Klinger,1 in 1925, analyzed the gases extracted from rimming, semikilled and killed steel ingots and found that the chief constituent of the rimming gas was carbon monoxide. The relatively large amounts of nitrogen reported in his first few samples may have been due to incomplete removal of air from the gas-collecting mechanism. McKune2 reported similar studies of rimming ingots from which surprisingly large proportions of nitrogen and hydrogen were evolved. Ameen and Willners3 determined both the amount and composition of gases extracted from unkilled ingots with the aid of diminished pressure. Their ingots weighed only 80 kg. After a brief consideration of the properties of zinc sulfide minerals, their flotation characteristics, and their reactions with thiol collectors, the literature on the activation of the minerals by cupric ion, their deactivation by cyanide, and their depression is reviewed in detail. The distinction between deactivation and depression is stressed. The contradictions in the published results and theories are discussed and attempts are made to resolve them. It is concluded that, whereas all aspects of the subject require further investigation, the study of depression is most likely to yield benefits in practice.

Electron-micrographic studies and hardness tests were made of an internally oxidized dispersion-strengthened Cu-12 vol pct SiO2 alloy follozuing longtime annealing at elevated temperatures. The rate of coarsening of SiO2 particles and the relationship between hardness and interpavticle spacing were Dispersion -strengthened alloys exhibit a remarkable stability of structure and properties at elevated temperatures compared with conventional alloys; nevertheless, when they are exposed to high measured. The rate of coarsening of SiO2 particles is controlled by the decomposition of SiO, rather than by the diffusion rates of silicon or oxygen through the copper matrix. The mechanism of coarsening was also studied by using a diffusion-couple technique. temperatures, weakening takes place as a result of coarsening of the dispersed phase. The theoretical treatment of the coarsening of dispersed phases has been treated by Greenwood,1 wagner,, and others3 by considering the interfacial energy of dispersions and the diffusion of solute atoms. THE Wisconsin. Zinc District, or the Upper Mississippi Lead and Zinc District as it is often called, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, in, Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties, and it includes adjoining parts of Illinois and Iowa. The district is about 70 miles long, north and south, and about 40 miles wide, east and west. It lies wholly within what is geologically known as the non-glaciated area of the Upper Mississippi Valley. HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT The district was first opened up as a lead producer in 1822. From this time until 1860, about 205,000 tons of cog lead (galena) and washed lead (galena) was produced from shallow crevices and openings. From 1860 to 1900, about 74,500 tons was produced, and since that time, from 5000 to 7000 tons has been produced annually. Since-1900, most of the lead concentrate produced has been as a byproduct of the zinc mines. The first zinc ores were mined about 1862. These were the carbonate ores, locally known as " drybone." Very little zinc blende was mined in the district, previous to 1875. The zinc blende ores mined from 1875 to 1900 were mostly of the high-grade, hand-cobbed, sheet-ore class, which usually contained from 45 to 60 per cent. metallic zinc. Such nines as the "Sallie Waters," ? Quinlin," "Lead Mine," "Benton Blende" and "Ida Blende," located near Benton, Wis., were mines which produced ores of this type, during this period. The mines located at Highland, the "Coker Mine" located at Livingston, Wis., and the "Opencut Mine" located at Shullsburg, Wis., were mines that were heavy zinc carbonate producers, previous to 1900.
