TO determine the optimum inside dimension of an airshaft, it is necessary to strike the proper balance between the cost of power for air friction and turbulence losses within the airshaft, on the one hand, and the cost of sinking the airshaft, on the other. An airshaft larger than necessary is extravagant because the increased amortization rate exceeds the reduction in power cost. Conversely, an airshaft smaller than is needed wastes more power than can be justified by the corresponding reduction in amortization rate. Discussion of the paper of O. P. Hood, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2607 to 2611. R. V. Norris, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-I have had a little experience with gasoline locomotives and I want to indorse very strongly Mr. Hood's point with regard to the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. I think .the terrible danger is not fully realized. I was foolish enough some time ago, in investigating a gasoline locomotive, to attempt to walk out of the mine entry behind it, and for several days I felt very seriously the carbon monoxide effects. The use of gasoline locomotives ought to be confined to mine entries where there is a very large amount of air. One of the grave dangers is their great convenience and the temptation to run them into chambers for just a few moments to get a car or two. GEORGE S. RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Apparently one of the great dangers is in the style of the gasoline engine. When my attention was. first directed to the type of gasoline locomotives which I saw in the foreign mines-France, Belgium, and Germany, I was most favorably impressed with them, and they have given no trouble on account of fumes, so far as I could learn. Large numbers of them were being used, but all were of small capacity, and of a kind in which the speed control is by a governor of the hit-or-miss type, the engine running continuously. Their power capacity was very low, if I remember correctly it was not over 4 or 5 h.p., but they were used under favorable conditions where the grades in the mines were slight, since the entries or tunnels bad a slight grade in favor of-the load, making about the same pull for the empties against the grade as for the load with the grade. I understand the hit-or-miss valve arrangement enables a setting that will give more perfect combustion than can be insured with the valve controlled by the operating man, as in the automobile type of valve and engine used in this country. Apparently the European type of locomotive does not have the capacity to permit use under the conditions existing in this country, where most of our entries or tunnels have variable grades and long heavy trips of mine cars are used.

It is a coincidence that the two plants in this country for treating copper ores by ammonia leaching came into existence at almost the same time, that of the Kennecott Copper Corporation at Kennecott, Alaska, in March, 1916, and that of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. in July of the same year. The success of both from their very beginning attests the merits of the process under widely different sets of conditions. As would be expected, in the time they have been operating these two pioneers in this field have greatly perfected their methods and improved their technic. The early difficulties inevitably encountered in undertakings of this nature have been largely surmounted and the process may now be considered to be well seasoned and matured. There have been no other commercial plants built in this country and but one elsewhere, the Bwana M'Kubwa in Northern Rhodesia, for the reason that this method of treatment may be employed on comparatively few ores. However, it has certain advantages, some of which are inherent to sand leaching processes generally and some to ammonia leaching in particular. Among these may be enumerated: (1) the avoidance of fine grinding; (2) the small amount of water required; (4) a high-grade product; (5) little likelihood of deleterious gangue constituents and fouling of solutions. It is true that great progress has been made in recent years in the flotation of the ores that come within the province of ammonia leaching. Nevertheless ammonia leaching has its possibilities and these may be overlooked in the present tendency toward the use of flotation for all ores. Probably the chief requisite to its further extension to suitable ores will be a cheap source of steam. Ammonia, the only reagent required, is unlimited in supply, readily transported and the price that is likely to obtain in the future should not make its cost at all onerous. Choice of Method for Kennecott Ores The Kennecott ores are typical limestone replacement deposits. The milling ores have a copper content of approximately 8 per cent in a limestone dolomite gangue. SiNcE the gypsum deposits of Nova Scotia have been operated on a large-tonnage basis, it has become increasingly necessary that more study be given to the geological relation of gypsum to anhydrite. It was while attempting to work out some definite system of quarry operation for several operators that the factors relating to hydration as given in this paper became apparent. For convenience the words "the formation" are used to mean anhydrite and gypsum taken together as one bed geologically and forming a distinct unit from the rocks below or above. Also, the word "block" is used geologically to define a portion of the formation that is cut apart and separated by erosion from other portions. The formation is part of the Lower Carboniferous, the remainder of which is made up of red shales and shaly sandstones, coarse red conglomerates and limestones. Overlying the Lower Carboniferous are the even-bedded gray sandstones of the coal measures. To a large extent these sandstones have been eroded from above the formation and the usual cover is clay and unconsolidated sediments. The position of the limestone member which immediately underlies the formation usually furnishes the key to the general structure. Being harder, and subject to less erosion, it has a wider spread than the'formation, and measures for dip read on it have a value which can not be applied to dips taken on gypsum or anhydrite. This limestone usually is not more than 25 ft. deep, but it has a remarkable tenacity—one would almost say elasticity—under strain of earth movements. In many cases it stands as a barrier to the erosion which otherwise would have destroyed completely the remaining block of the formation. No bedded limestone is found within the formation except in narrow seams close to the bottom and in short irregular masses in highly disturbed strata where it has been caught up by fault action. This paper is not concerned with the general theories of original deposition and no opinion is expressed as to whether gypsum or anhydrite was first deposited from evaporating sea water. For purposes of study, and as an observed fact, except in the few cases where there has been extreme disturbance, a block of the formation is regarded as a block of anhydrite which has become partly hydrated into gypsum. 177

METALLIC corrosion, which results from the chemical affinity of different metals for non- metallic elements, should be considered from both the kinetic and static viewpoints. From the stand- point of statics the metals may be arranged in the order of their affinity for oxygen, chlorine or any other acid- forming element. They may also be arranged in the order of the magnitude of the heat of combination of their corresponding compounds. It is misleading to talk about some metals as "noble," because these relations are all relative; and the order varies for oxygen, chlorine or whatever the element may be. A third way to arrange the metals is by their solution pressures. These three methods indicate that one metal is better under one set of conditions, but not so good under other conditions. Considering the problem from the standpoint of kinetics, the thing which saves most metals is what may be called the sluggishness of reactions. Using organic substances as an example, we know they will all oxidize, but fortunately they do so rather slowly. An increase in temperature always means an increase in the reaction rate, and preventing corrosion at high temperatures is a greater problem than at low temperatures. A second consideration is to avoid all sub- stances which might provoke catalytic action, and as it is generally impossible to foresee what substances might do this, the thing is to avoid all substances other than the main constituents of the alloys. A third consideration is to avoid local electrolytic action, which again indicates the advisability of avoiding the contact of differing substances.

THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Meek, geologists, have contributed geologic information and ideas, for which thanks are extended. The Executive Committee of Marsman and Co., Inc., Managers of the Company, has kindly given permission for publication. Mr. J. B. Stapler, Division Manager, Marsman and Co., has had the courtesy to read the manuscript and to give critical and helpful suggestions. LOCATION OF AREA AND SCOPE OF WORK San Mauricio Mining Co. controls a group of 113 claims that lie immediately north of the town of Jose Pañganiban (formerly Mambulao), Camarines Norte, Luzon, P. I. (Fig. 1). Exploration work commenced in the spring of 1934; active development began in the fall of that year and has continued to the present date. Mill construction was begun Oct. 15, 1935, and production started March 10, 1936. Total production to June 1, 1939, is P10,499,105.15 ($5,249,552.57). [+]

AT the meeting of January 28 which was held too late to be reported in the February MINING AND METAL-LURGY, Messrs. Taylor, Barron, Bassett, DeGolyer, Hutchinson, Norris, Rand, Reynders, Smith, Sweetser and Callow were present. Aside from routine matters, relating to finances and membership,, the Board author-ized establishment of a payroll account and payment by check. It also approved plans for a regional meeting to be, held at Cleveland on April 19 and 20 under the auspices of the Ohio Section and the Iron and Steel Committee. Following a report from the Committee on increase of Membership, Messrs. Barron, Bassett, and Sweetser were appointed as a special committee to con-sider the feasibility of increasing the dues. Mr. Read was made secretary of this Committee. A pleasant feature of the meeting was the presence of past-presi-dent Olcott and the presentation by him to the Institute of an elaborate scrap book, covering the excursion through Mexico made by the Institute in 1901. The meeting was preceded by a dinner at which Scott Turner spoke of the problems of the Bureau of Mines and the large volume of service work for the govern-ment it was now called on to perform. M. L. Requa discussed the need of more exact data covering our national reserve of minerals. E. N. Cooper gave a vivid picture of conditions in Mexico. W. H. Bassett told of the problems before the Institute of Metals, and Zay Jeffries told of the plans for that Division now being formulated. Max W. Ball reinforced what Mr. Requa had said relative to the importance and value of conservation studies as relates to minerals.

The attention of travellers, upon the desert bordering the Great Colorado of the West, is often arrested by broad stretches of pebble-covered plains, or mesas, glittering in the sunlight from the myriads of polished surfaces, giving, at a distance, the appearance of a sheet of water. It is not alone the well-rounded, polished surface of these pebbles which commands attention, but, in addition, their nearly black or darkbrown color; and, above all, their uniform distribution in a level sheet, covering the plain in a continuous layer or pavement like a vast mosaic without sand or soil. Hundreds of square miles along the lower Colorado, especially in Yuma county, Arizona, and on the borders of the Colorado Desert in California, are thus covered. It is evident that the former cxtent of such pebbly plains was much greater than now, for the continuity of the mesa is broken into by the numerous dry arroyos or " washes " formed during exceptional showers or deluging rains. In some places there is an underlying bed of pebbly conglomerate, a mixture of pebbles and sand; in others the pebbles rest on a sandy, earthy foundation. The rounded pebbles are distinctly alluvial in origin, and pertain to the ancient Colorado drainage system; but it is not comprehensible that such regular layers of polished pebbles could have been left by subsiding floods or river action. Attention was early directed by me to these remarkable plains, first examined in 1853, when exploring for the United States and seeking a practicable route for a railway to the Pacific coast.* The cut and polished surface of the pebbles

This excellent, concise paper by Dr. Iwasaki on the principles of selective flocculation for iron ores discusses many of the principles and problems which have occurred in our bench and pilot plant test-work. The use of sodium tripolyphosphate in combination with sodium silicate as a dispersant is very effective. However, this may cause a problem with the environmental groups as phosphorous is a nutrient. We have also established that the lower the Ca level in the pulp solutions the greater the dispersion. We have found that ores from the same geological strata, having the same general mineralogy and iron content will sometimes have widely different degrees of dispersion. There was-no difference in the gross mineralogy but the solubility of the Ca and SO ions was much less in the ores most easily dispersed. Research efforts should be directed towards a more practical means which would more easily enable one to predict the amount of dispersant required for the various ores. With regard to water quality we have found that waters having higher contents of SO4 and C1 ions hinder dispersion. This could be a method of controlling too much dispersion by the addition of sulfate or chloride ions. This would require further investigation. We have had no trouble with agitation speeds of up to 925 rpm in conditioning starch with the dispersed pulp prior to selective flocculation. We have found about 0.3Lb/LT of starch to be sufficient for selective flocculation on our ores. I TOLD you before that four things are necessary in addition to good judgment for one who wishes to practice the art of casting well. The first is to make the moulds and to have the furnace well made, the wood of a good kind, dry and seasoned, and the material disposed to melt. I have given you enlightenment on all these in detail, and on the last point as well, as you can see in the discussion on the alloys of metals where, among other things, I told you a good deal about those of copper. Therefore I wish to say but little about them in this chapter, but in order to follow the order promised you, I tell you that when you can, and if the labor or expense does not displease you, you should always alloy the whole quantity of the metals that you wish to put into one work and should make them into cakes of one kind. For, in addition to being more conveniently arranged in the furnace and mire easily handled, they all melt at one time and with much less work than they would if they were in pieces of different kinds. It is necessary to give corruption to copper, for if you decided to melt fine copper by itself in a reverberatory furnace your soul would burst before you had any honor therefrom. Then, if you wished to cast a fine thing from it, it would not succeed because it is dot fluid, on account of its viscosity; and if it should succeed, it would be all full of holes, like a

This is even more difficult with ores which require previous calcination, or with mattes which have been roasted in heaps. Even in cases where the greatest pains have been taken and the most elaborate calculations made beforehand, it frequently happens that variations in the working of the furnace interfere with the result so much desired. Generally, the practical metallurgist must be content with ascertaining the average composition of his ores and fluxes, making a calculation once for all as to the most advantageous mixture, and leaving slight changes in its composition to be taken care of as it is passing through the furnace. The various products then afford him the best material whereon to base his judgment as to the manner in which his smelting mixture is working. Of course the character of the slag is one of his chief guides, but it is not always possible from its outward characters alone to form a correct judgment as to its composition. Neither would it be possible or practicable to apply chemical analysis for this purpose, as it would be impossible to wait for its results while working a furnace. PROLOGUE The Yaguki mine, which is located near the southern end of the Tohoku region, Japan, near the coast of the Pacific Ocean, had had a long history as a copper mine, but had not been operated since 1925. About 30 years later it was reopened by Nittetsu Mining Company, and in 1958 a small flotation and magnetic separation plant, a so-called test plant, started production. The ball mill the author first met, a 8x4x4x7 ft tricone mill, called No.1 mill, had started running at that time. With his experience in initial, running of this mill he realized that the ball mill was not simply a preparatory process to flotation, but a determinant factor for flotation performance, an energy-consuming and costly process, and that its operation control was an important task in the plant (1). The working part of an operating ball mill is the ball load inside, whose properties govern the grinding performance. Its size distribution affects the efficiency greatly and the capacity is nearly proportional to its weight. When a ball mill operates for a long period of time with a constant and consistent addition of renewal balls, wear and renewal of balls are balanced, and an equilibrium ball load is formed. A stable equilibrium load is the primary requirement for a stable ball mill operation. However, renewal ball size would be the most influential factor affecting efficiency and capacity of operating ball mills. RESISTIVITY measurements for determining depth to bedrock, water table, and other geologic discontinuities have had only limited success. Many of the difficulties can be attributed to complex geology and to basic limitations of the method; current flow through a continuous medium is a diffusion phenomenon, emphasizing irregularities near the source and smoothing out those at a distance. Some of the failures, however, are due to careless field work and incompetent interpretation. A forthcoming publication1 may help to reduce difficulties of this sort. The writer here attempts to bring order into the multiplicity of interpretation methods and, to a limited extent, to evaluate them. For all methods, the field data to be interpreted consist of apparent resistivity values plotted against electrode separation, Fig. 1. The interpretation should give depths to one or more geologic horizons. Direct currents and the Wenner four-electrode configuration will be assumed, since these are widely used, although the interpretation problems remain essentially the same for other electrode configurations. Alternating currents higher than, say, 20 cycles per second introduce complications beyond the scope of this paper. Three approaches to the interpretation problem have been used. These may be called empirical, theoretical curve matching, and direct. Many techniques have been proposed, but each can be reduced to one of these approaches and to a single geologic idealization. This idealization rests on the following assumption: the earth in the limited volume of interest can be approximated by a horizontal sequence of layers, each homogeneous and isotropic in its electrical properties. IN considering the valuation of industrial properties in general, and of developed coal properties in par-ticular, it is assumed as fundamental that they have but one true value regardless of the object for which they are appraised. As regards developed coal lands, this value is only very approximately indicated by the recent sale price of neighboring lands, for the reason that it is rarely possible to find a sale of a coal property sufficiently similar in essential mining conditions to the one under consideration to serve as a measure of its value; and if such a one is found there are frequently incidental conditions peculiar to this particular transaction which invalidate the use of the sale price as a measure of general values. The true measure of the value of a coal mining opera-tion is the amount and rate of earnings it will afford with intelligent and experienced management. Prac-tically all of the features of a property which are gen-erally recognized as affecting its value relate either to the cost of producing the coal, or to the price it will bring, and so are intimately associated with earnings. In practice it is customary to appraise those portions of a developed coal property which are produced -by the industry of man-mine plant, equipment, development, town, etc.-at their cost of replacement at prevailing prices of materials, machinery, and labor, with such deductions for age, condition, obsolescence, and lack of usefulness as conditions warrant. RECENT studies by Smith and Olney,1,2 Olney,3 Greifer and Salli,4 Rys etal., and Olney and smith 6 have established that graphite is the first decomposition product to format the surface of hypereutectoid plain-carbon steels when they are austenitized in a vacuum or inert atmosphere and slowly cooled. This graphite evidently forms directly from the austenite and only at the surface of the specimen. The interior of the specimen is found to be free of graphite. The graphite layer can almost completely cover the specimen surface and the rate of its formation is markedly sensitive to the orientation of the austenite. The present work was undertaken to study this phenomenon further, especially with regard to the effect of temperature and austenite orientation. The material studied in this work was a high-purity iron-carbon alloy containing 0.88 pct C, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.016 pct Si, 0.005 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. Specimens were heat-treated in a commercial hot stage modified for rapid quenching.7 This permitted direct observation of the formation of the surface graphite. A vacuum of 10"" to 10-5 mm of Hg prevented oxidation or decarburization of the specimens. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1100°C and quenched to a series of lower temperatures where they were isothermally transformed. Surface graphite was observed to form at 700°, 750°, and 780°C but not at 825°, 900° or 1000°C. Since the maximum solubility of austenite for graphite is 0.88 pct C at 800°C,8 surface graphite only forms at tem-
