In " The Genesis of Certain Auriferous Lodes "* Dr. Don makes a reference to a curious vein-formation known as the "Indicator," which characterizes a portion of the Ballarat mining district,, in Victoria, Australia. During 1890 and again in 1898 I had an opportunity of making a few notes, which, although somewhat belated,t may be worth adding to the observations recorded in the Transactions of the Institute. The country of the Ballarat gold-field consists of the Lower Silurian slates and sandstones, which also enclose the reefs of Bendigo; but it is noteworthy that the successive anticlinal folds, and accompanying saddles of quartz, which distinguish Bendigo are not characteristic of Ballarat, the geological structure of which presents greater complexity. That part of the district known as Ballarat East became famous early in its history on account of the large nuggets which were found in the alluvium, and subsequently it became further known because of a peculiar persistent black seam, traversing the bed-rock underlying the alluvial deposits, which was found to be associated with rich bunches of gold-ore, not only in the gravel that capped it at the surface but also in the quartz-veins which crossed it underground. The name of " Indicator " was early given. In 1871 Mr. Morgan Llewellyn directed attention to it as influencing the distribution of the gold. In the government quarterly report for December, 1888,

The subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years past have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. Circulating Load In this particular paper it seems advisable to deal with the classification phases of the work that to a major extent govern the success of any closed-circuit grinding unit. .NONE of the methods now in use for the transportation of materials underground is entirely free from more or less serious objection. The great flexibility, ease, of control and economy of operation of electric tramming are accompanied by the serious menace of a trolley-wire distributing system. As the gasoline locomotive has even greater flexibility of application and requires no similar dangerous distributing system, it might be considered a safety device which would make possible the elimination of the dangerous trolley system were it not possessed of other objectionable qualities peculiar to itself. It is found that the exhaust gases from the engine may be injurious to the health of those breathing the air in which the locomotive has been operating. While electric shock may kill the individual who makes contact with uninsulated parts, the gasoline engine may be detrimental to the health of all those who have to work within the atmosphere corrupted by exhaust gases. The degree of pollution meas-ures the magnitude of the menace. This may be negligible at times, but with careless operation it becomes serious. The exhaust gases from an engine are composed of, nitrogen, a little free oxygen, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, the last two being considered dangerous. The presence of carbon dioxide as a product of combustion of the gasoline was recognized as an objection from the beginning of the use of these machines, but attention was called to the fact that the amount produced was relatively small as compared to that from other sources of this gas, and it was not likely to be made in dangerous quantities. The effect of carbon dioxide, except in relatively large percentages, is confined to the effect it may have in reducing the oxygen content of the air that is breathed.

In a paper1 presented before this Institute in 1926,I briefly discussed the evaluation of coking coals by means of ultimate analysis. The paper contained several graphic studies in which coal analyses calculated free of moisture, ash, sulfur and nitrogen were plotted on triaxial diagrams in which carbon + hydrogen + oxygen = 100 per cent. From a study of such data for 600 coking coals of the United States, and 150 coking coals of Wales, France and Germany, it was concluded that it was usually possible to predict coking properties and by-product yields with fair success from ultimate analysis. The coals which have proved exceptions to the general rules were found to have physical peculiarities. Run-of-mine Coal It must not be forgotten that run-of-mine coal is a composite material consisting of many constituents differing in physical properties and chemical analysis. A coal sample usually contains: 1. Glossy black coal known as anthraxylon or vitrain. This constituent usually has the strongest coking properties, and the lowest ash content. 2. Dull black coal consisting of attritus containing thin layers of anthraxylon. It is also known as clarain. This constituent, in a coking coal, usually has good to excellent coking properties. 3. Mineral charcoal or fusain. This is a porous black material which is soft and crumbly (unless impregnated with mineral matter) and which has absolutely no coking properties. It is different in every respect from the other constituents in coal. The volatile matter content of mineral charcoal is less than 20 per cent. even when it is associated with high-volatile coals. As would be expected the hydrogen content is low, and the carbon content is high. 4. A coal sample may contain tough gray canneloid material which has a high-volatile matter and a high hydrogen content, but is poor in coking qualities.

The interaction of starch and calcium ions in soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores was investigated using the response surface method. The results were correlated with adsorption studies and into pilot plant tests. It was reported previously1,2 that in soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores there existed an optimum combination of the amounts of starch and calcium chloride addition, and that corn starch as a depressant for iron oxides became effective when a critical amount of starch was added, beyond which excess starch appeared in measurable quantities in the aqueous phase. Further, adsorption studies2,3 with various starch products on hematite or quartz showed that the adsorption of starch at a given pH was markedly enhanced by the presence of calcium ion in solution. From these observations it becomes of interest to investigate the interaction of starch and calcium added to the ore pulp, and their influence on the selectivity of flotation separations. This paper describes an empirical relation between such dependent variables as the grade and recovery of iron in the concentrate and the residual concentrations of starch and calcium ion in solution as a function of two independent variables, namely the amounts of starch and calcium chloride addition, as determined by using the general technique of response surface methodology. The results thus obtained are correlated with the adsorption studies on hematite and quartz, and with a typical pilot plant operation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The ore sample used in the batch flotation studies was the fine fraction of a Mesabi gravity concentrate produced by pilot plant grinding and classification. The sample analyzed 55.21% iron and 14.70% insol, and consisted of 85.81% minus 325 mesh (corresponding to Ore C). 2

THE United States Bureau of Mines has been studying the blast-furnace process for, about ten years. An experimental furnace was developed by the bureau in cooperation with the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station, University of Minnesota. Many data have been obtained and published.1 Royster, Joseph and Kinney§(48) found that the particle size of ore had an important effect upon the blast-furnace, process. Kinney(28) stated: Economy in blast-furnace practice depends largely upon efficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of the furnace. If efficient work is not done in the shaft, the hearth and bosh will not function properly. A condition may be readily imagined where the particles of ore in the shaft are so large that the time entailed in the descent of these materials into the bosh is not sufficient to permit proper reduction and preparation prior to the time the ore enters the bosh of the furnace. Another condition may be pictured where the density of the stock column and the flow of stock is such that the ore will take one course and the gas another. Both of these examples will result in insufficient contact between the gas and the ore. Unreduced ore will reach the hearth, and the gas which has not been efficiently oxidized will reach the stock line. The result is the use of an excess of carbon in the smelting process. It is obvious that fine ore particles occurring in the ore as charged, or . formed in the furnace due to heat and mechanical action, place a definite limitation upon the efficiency of the operation. There is also an economic loss of fine material as dust.

The Bureau of Mines has played an important role in the revival of precious-metal mining underway in the Western United States. During the past 30 years, many techniques used by industry to recover gold and silver were pioneered and developed by the Bureau of Mines. In 1952, technology was developed to strip gold from granular activated carbon and allow the carbon to be reused. In 1969, the heap leaching concept was applied to low-grade gold and silver ores and mine wastes. Heap leaching in conjunction with carbon adsorption-desorption permits very low value material to be economically processed. In 1970, an oxidation treatment based on hypochlorite was developed to increase the recovery of gold from carbonaceous gold ores by cyanidation. In the early 19501s, attempts were made to employ carbon-in-pulp technology to recover gold from ores, but the fixed price of gold and increasing operational costs made the process unprofitable. The Bureau of Mines and Homestake Mining Co. jointly operated a carbon-in-pulp pilot plant, and the technology was used in full-scale production at the Homestake Mine in 1972. In 1973, a pressure stripping method, which decreased the time needed for the stripping step, was developed to desorb gold and silver from carbon. An alcohol desorption method, developed in 1976, also decreased the carbon stripping time. These stripping methods are in commercial use. In 1979, an agglomeration pretreatment was developed that permitted clayey precious metal ores to be heap-leached. Agglomeration-heap leaching technology is being used by at least 30 operations, several of them major gold and silver mines. Almost all precious-metal-mining companies use at least one of the above techniques in production facilities.

ELECTROLYTIC, production of cadmium at the Great Falls plant started in the first part of the year 1925. Prior to that time, an experi¬mental unit had been in operation for a few months during the year . 1922. At present the plant is the largest producer of cadmium, not only in the United States but in the world. Electrolytic cadmium is characterized by its very low content of impurities. The main impurities, which are lead, copper, zinc, and iron, do not aggregate more than 0.05 per cent., leaving a cadmium content better than 99.95 per cent. The consumption of cadmium has increased rapidly since the war, with the growing use in the plating industry. Cadmium plating has come into prominence because of its connection with the automobile and radio industries. As a protective coating, a deposit of, cadmium is superior to zinc. Cadmium is also used extensively in alloys. Important among these is the alloy with copper used in telephone and trolley wire. In proportion of 0.5 to 1.2 per cent., cadmium adds materially to the strength and wearing qualities. Practically all commercial zinc concentrates contain a small amount of cadmium. In the electrolytic zinc process, the cadmium that is dissolved in the regular leaching operation is removed from solution with metallic zinc, generally added in the form of zinc dust. This precipitate also contains the copper taken into solution and the excess of zinc dust, which is required in order to insure a complete removal of all impurities. The precipitate is treated by a separate process to recover the copper, cadmium and excess zinc. In order to make the metals more soluble and to render insoluble such impurities as iron, arsenic and antimony, the precipitate is roasted. The roasting is carried out in gas-fired McDougall furnaces, with a roasting temperature of about 700° C.

During the last few years the compila-tion of formation logs from rotary well cuttings has become common practice among petroleum geologists. This meth-od has undoubtedly furnished a great amount of information valuable for both scientific and commercial purposes. How-ever, in spite of its great usefulness it has certain drawbacks, principally in the contamination of cuttings by cavings. In extreme cases this contamination can reach such proportions that it is next to impossible to draw conclusions with any degree of certainty as to the nature of the formations penetrated by the drill. This difficulty was frequently encoun-tered during the development of the Okla-homa City Field. In many cases where Wilcox sand-the most prolific sand of this field-was drilled, the samples con-sisted almost entirely of shale cavings with only traces of sand. In order to obtain more reliable knowl-edge of the formations encountered while drilling it is therefore necessary to resort to more coring, and above all to improve our present methods of coring. With this in mind a study has been made of the results of coring in the Oklahoma City Field, and the present article is mainly confined to a statistical analysis of the relation between recovery, diameter of cores and drill pipe, length of cores and a few other factors. Most of the coring in the Oklahoma City Field was done during the early part of, the development. A total of around 18,000 feet or 0.3 per cent of the total footage drilled before February, 1932, has been cored, and about 80 per bent of the cores were taken in the Simpson formation at a depth below 6,000 feet.

OPERATIONS of the Braden Copper Co. are in the Chilean Andes, southeast of Santiago. Most remote of the company communities is Sewell, a town of 12,000 people, 7000 ft above sea level at the junction of the Coya and Teniente rivers. Four miles down the Coya River is the smelter town of Caletones, elevation 4500 ft, with a population of about 3000. At the junction of the Coya and Cacha-poal rivers 24 miles below Sewell is Coya, elevation 2500 ft, location of the company's two hydroelectric plants. The principal accounting offices; steel, iron, and brass foundries; railroad shops; and major mechanical repair and fabricating shops are at Rancagua in the central Chilean valley, 44 miles from Sewell. The company owned narrow-gage railroad connects with the Chilean national railroad at Rancagua and above Coya is the only modern means of travel. El Teniente mine at Sewell is the largest underground copper mine in the world. The mill, at the portal of the main tunnel, has a capacity of 34,000 tons of crude ore daily, although production is lower during the winter beacause of electric power restrictions. When operating at capacity the mill produces 2000 tpd of copper concentrates and 32,000 tpd of tailings. Tonnage of tailings is equivalent to about 100,000 tons of pulp at normal water to solid ratio. Because the streams flowing from the Andes in the area of Braden's operations are used for irrigation, it is impossible to dump tailings directly to the river. The tailings pulp must be separated into solids and decanted clear water, and the clear water returned to the same water shed from which the original water was removed. Remaining sands and slime must be deposited in a reservoir where they will not cause trouble to farmers.

This paper summarizes the results of laboratory tests conducted to determine the properties of the paraffin or rod-wax encountered in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming. It also describes field tests and methods employed to cope with the paraffin problem. The conclusions to bo drawn from the laboratory work are: 1. Samples of Salt Creek paraffin range in consistency from soft lo hard, the melting points varying from 120" to 156" V. 2. Masses of soft paraffin are soluble to an appreciable extent in crude oil and its liquid fractions at temperatures somewhat below the melting point of the paraffin. Hard paraffin is very slightly soluble. under these conditions. 3. Agitation apparently increases the amount of paraffin that will go into solution. 4. Paraffin congeals from solutions upon cooling to the point of saturation ation, which is in all cnscs below thc melting point of the paraffin. 5. Crutltl oil is tlie most effective. of all the solvents for holding paraffin in solution. 6. Pressure alone does not appreciably affect the solubility of paraffin in crude oil nor does it aid materially in holding paraffin in solution when the temperature is reduced. 7. Natural gas in solution under pressure does not appreciably increase the solubility of paraffin in crude oil, hut is effective in holding paraffin in solution when the temperature is reduced. 8. A foreign body introduced into a solution of paraffin in oil is imrnediately coated with paraffin if the temperature of the solution is at or below the melting point of the paraffin, and the object is considerably cooler than the solution. It may not be entirely correct to ray that paraffin is taken into solution; it is impossible that the paraffin may be in suspension rather than in solution.

THE introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be described. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 .moles of the added material were studied. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described in the first paper; the pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicar-bonate as follows: pH 0.1 M NaHCO3 8.4 2 parts 0.1 M NaHCO3, 1 part 0.1 M Na2CO3 9.5 1 part 0.1 M NaHCO3, 2 parts 0.1 M Na2CO3 10.0 0.1 M Na2CO3 11.2 The reagents used were all of C.P. grade. The anions studied may be divided into three groups: (1) anions that had little or no effect upon the potential curves-sulphate, nitrate, and acetate; (2) those that helped to prevent corrosion at low pH only-fluoride, chloride, bromide, and iodide; (3) those that helped to prevent corrosion at high pH also-phosphate, perborate, and chromate.

The interfacial free energy of the high angle grain boundary and of the stacking fault is assumed to be thermodynamically equivalent to the corresponding in-terfacial tensions. In terms of the true dihedral angles & between the intersecting interfaces, the equilibrium of interfacial tensions in the direction parallel to the stacking fault yields: ysF = -ygb(cos F1+ cos ±cosF2) Here, ysF is the stacking fault free energy and ygb is the grain boundary free energy, assumed equal on both sides of the intersection. Forces acting normal to the grain boundary, of the form ??gb/?F,l are assumed negligible as the grain boundary remains straight for a considerable distance on either side of the intersection. The micrograph of Fig. 1 may actually consist of several closely spaced stacking faults on the same slip plane. The actual point of intersection between the grain boundary and the first stacking fault, and the equilibrium configuration of the intersection, should not be affected by the presence of the other faults, as

An open pit rock structure usually contains geological planes of weakness. They are formed by joints, faults, bedding planes, fractures, and cleavages. Rock slope failures often occur in the form of sliding of rock blocks along a plane or several planes. Such a rock block has three- dimensional geometry, and consequently a vector method of analysis has been found useful in evaluating its stabi1ity.l-3 Rock blocks of a tetrahedral shape with one free surface have been analyzed by Londe.3 Rock blocks formed by sets of parallel joints have been analyzed by Wittke.1,2 The present chapter presents the analysis of rock blocks formed by planes of weakness of arbitrary orientation, and of three-dimensional geometry. A plane of weakness is represented by its dip and strike in vector form and is reduced to the form of a linear equation. The geometry of the rock block is defined by solving the linear equations. The geometric characteristics of a rock block are based on triangles and tetrahedrons. By this treatment, the three-dimensional geometry is simplified and the number of calculations of forces and moments is reduced. Methods of finding the geometric characteristics are presented, along with equations for calculating the resultant forces and moments and the factor of safety. BASIC ASSUMPTIONS The following assumptions are used : The solid part of the rock mass is much stronger than the rock mass at the plane of weakness and the rock mass will only fail along planes of weakness.

THE purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities, being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-gravity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 1 1/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from ½ to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder.

OBSERVERS in more than negligible number appear to believe that the achievements of engineers during the last generation have been an affliction rather than a blessing to society. Quite accurately they perceive that scientific progress and technologic advance have reduced to a fraction-often a small fraction-the amount of manual effort required to accomplish a given unit of useful work. They have seen men, as a consequence, deprived of employment in a particular industry; and this so-called technological unemployment they have denounced as inimical to the workers and consequently to the whole social order in progressive nations. To those who subscribe to this thesis the story of the Porphyry Coppers may not make palatable reading, for it is an amazing record of engineering and technologic achievement. But to those others who take the longer and broader view that economic and social progress cannot enduringly lag far behind advance in the realm of science and engineering; and that any improvement in the means and method of doing essential things eventually must make the world a better place in which to live; to these the record of the development of these great mines can- not but be a source of delight. It is an outstanding example of the advantages of mass production coupled with the fruits of scientific research and inventive genius. More, it reflects the pioneer spirit, the initiative, the self-reliance, the independence of thought and action that are traditional with the mining engineer. The purposes of this statement are to define a problem that exists in regard to the estimation of developed petroleum reserves, to analyze the problem in an abstract manner, and to discuss it as an introduction to certain papers that follow. The problem is to devise and develop a suitable procedure to permit more accurate estimates of developed petroleum reserves. Part of the problem is to make such estimates available earlier in the life of any particular pool. The problem of securing more accurate estimates of developed petroleum reserves existed prior to curtailment of production. With curtailment, however, the problem became acute, some of the more prominent reasons being as follows: 1. The standard method of estimation depended on production-decline curves. This method is inapplicable while curtailment prevails and available methods arc insufficient. 2. The retarding influence imposed by wide open flow conditions upon overdevelopment is absent. Great losses of capital by overdevelopment can now occur before realization of the true situation occurs, or before effective steps can be taken to stop such wastage. This increases the need for early, accurate estimates. 3. Above-ground stocks have diminished and the equivalent of such supply tends more and more to be retained underground in the natural reservoirs. It becomes increasingly necessary to know accurately the amount of these stocks. To direct attention to an additional point of different nature: improved accuracy of reserve estimation can be obtained only by closer scrutiny of the factors that determine recovery. This examination and the resulting efforts to measure the effect of these factors in terms of ultimate recovery must tend to improve ultimate recovery. The statements regarding the acute nature of the problem also indicate to some extent the importance of the problem and the necessity of finding a solution. Developed reserves of the industry, and of individual opera-tors, are one of the great factors that properly should determine explora-

Desch which appears in abstract elsewhere in this issue, Mr. Sing-master's talk on the zinc industry at the annual dinner, and the presentation of the James Douglas Medal to one of the members of the Division, Dr. Zay Jeffries. Four technical sessions of the Division were held, dealing respectively with zinc, copper, aluminum, and general metallography, and in addition there was a joint session with the Non-ferrous Metallurgical Committee of the Institute. All of the papers presented were at-tended with much interest and followed by considerable discussion. The papers on plastic deformation of zinc by Messrs. Mathewson and Phillips, Romig, and Hoyt were of particular interest and awakened an extended discus-sion. They well illustrated the progress which is being -made today in the understanding of the mechanism of flow of metals, and the ingenuity of the authors in their crystallographic method of attack of this difficult problem was quite generally admired. A very old subject was treated in a modern way by Messrs. Corson and Bain in two papers on the harden-ing of copper and copper alloys. There has always existed a myth that the ancient Egyptians were masters of an art not possessed by ourselves; viz., that of hard-ening copper. This myth must have been quite defi-nitely dispelled in the minds of all those who listened to this admirable paper. Mr. Corson has applied the modern art of precipitation hardening to this old prob-lem with substantial success, employing small amounts of chromium, nickel, silicon, and cobalt for this purpose. The commercial application of these very important .developments of Mr. Corson is being actively investi-gated at the present time.

THE knowledge of the existence of petroleum in Southern California dates back to the days of the missions. The presence of asphaltum and semisolid bitumen was reported at Santa Barbara in 1792, but no serious attempt was made to develop oil until Professor Silliman's optimistic report in 1865 started California's first oil boom. Wells were drilled in many counties of the State, but the equipment was unsuitable and the drilling difficult and no production was obtained except in Ventura County. Even there the production was of little importance commercially, and not until the early '80s did it become sufficient to again attract attention. In 1888 the production for the State had reached a total of about 700,000 bbl. per year, practically all light oil produced in Ventura County, Pico Canyon, Los Angeles County and in the Puente Hills. The production of petroleum attained the dignity of an industry in 1895 when the Los Angeles City and Coalinga fields were discovered. The subsequent development has been remarkable, and in 20 years the production has increased from 1,000,000 to 100,000,000 bbl. per year. The refining industry has kept pace with the production of oil. The Pacific Coast Oil Co., the predecessor of the Standard Oil Co. of California, was the virtual pioneer refining company of the State, having built a refinery at Alameda about 1880. When purchased by the Standard, about 1902, it was dismantled and the refinery at Point Richmond was built. The Richmond refinery is now one of the largest in the world, having a capacity in excess of 60,000 bbl. per day. A small refinery was built by the Union Oil Co. at Santa Paula in the early days of the industry and later many asphalt refineries were in operation in Southern California. The Pacific Coast Oil Co. was then, as has been its successor, the Standard Oil Co. of California, the principal refiner and marketer of light products, the most valuable of which was kerosene.
