Frequent reference has been made to the increased domestic gasoline demand recorded for 1931. This increase was in the neighborhood of 7,000,000 bbl. Although smaller relatively than that to which the oil industry had become accustomed by virtue of the experience of preceding years, the increase was of substantial amount, particularly at a time when any increase at all could be regarded with eminent satisfaction. Less has been said, however, of the 18,000,000 bbl. decline in gasoline shipments to territories and foreign countries. When the loss of business outside the United States is combined with the domestic increase, there results a net loss of some 11,000,000 bbl. in total gasoline demand. The gain of 2 per cent in domestic sales gives way to a loss of 2.5 per cent in total domestic and foreign sales. The United States actually has been losing ground in the international gasoline market since 1924, when shipments from this country equaled 72 per cent of the gasoline shipments from the leading gasoline-producing countries of the world. A loss in relative standing was recorded with each succeeding year. As long, however, as gasoline shipments showed an actual increase, the loss in relative standing was of little concern. Foreign producing centers annually supplied an increasing share of the foreign gasoline markets, but, until the past year, the demand abroad continued to increase at a pace which could accommodate all of the increased output of foreign plants and yet require increasing quantities from the United States. It was not until 1931 that the various factors were combined so as to produce an actual and substantial decrease in the foreign demand for United States gasoline. Consumption in foreign countries generally declined, while the output of foreign refineries and the foreign manufacture of substitute fuels continued to increase. From our own viewpoint, this meant a loss of some 18,000,000 bbl. of gasoline business in foreign countries, one-half of it probably due to the lowering in foreign demand and the other half to the increased output of foreign refineries and the increased utilization of substitute fuels.

THE great activity with which the oil resources of the northern Cantons of the State of Veracruz have been developed has largely resulted from the great success obtained by the important explorations carried out since 1902 in the Ebano district in the North, and several years later near Tuxpam, in the South. It must not be thought that these successes were quickly obtained, since the preliminary studies by good experts, the acquisition of what were thought to be the most promising coast lands, the extensive clearing thereof, and finally the number of unsuccessful drillings at great depth, signified an original outlay of some ten's of millions of dollars before finding commercial oil. The discovery of oil in industrial quantities at Cerro de la Pez, Ebano district, and the famous Dos Bocas gusher some years later, which was burned, once and for all made famous the Veracruz coast, where today is concentrated the Mexican output of mineral oil. In .1917, this production was nearly 50,000,000 bbl. It is well known that this output represents only a fraction of what the wells in actual production can furnish, because with adequate means of transportation and storage, the present extraction could be somewhat over 300,000,000 bbl. a year. These enormous potential oil resources of the Veracruz coast proceed from a relatively small number of wells, scattered over a few oil fields, separated from each other by large unexplored areas, wherein may be found other favorable fields which, in time, will undoubtedly become just as great centers of oil production. Experts who know our Gulf Coast believe that lands with commercial oil resources lie not only between the Panuco amid Tuxpan Rivers, but that indications are that the oil zone of Mexico, with more or less interruption, takes in the coast zone from Northern Tamaulipas to the foot of the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, and the banks of the Usumacinta River. This generalization is not merely the outcome of optimism, but is the result of the persistency with which one finds, throughout this Gulf Coast, the most usual characteristics upon which we depend for recognizing oil-bearing lands.

QUITE a number of years ago in looking for basic facts, it seemed obvious, in view of an unquestion-able supply of raw material and an extensive requirement probable in the near future, that the funda-mental requirement of any shale-oil industry was mass production 'by a continuous process. This decision greatly simplified matters, as it eliminated all considera-tion of externally-heated retorts, and all batch processes, which only utilize a part of the capacity of the interior space because, unless the ashes are removed as rapidly as formed, the space occupied by them is dead, instead of being occupied either by shale in active distillation or in drying out and heating up preparatory thereto. A second imperative and basic necessity soon appeared as a natural sequence, namely, the fixed carbon of the spent shale must be utilized to supply the heat for the eduction of the oil. PRODUCTION OF THE CRUDE As the production of the crude oil is the first and most important step in the utilization of oil-shale, being the only source from which the multitude of possible by-products can come, each by a special treatment of the crude oil, I will devote the time allotted to me to the subject of crude oil production-its cost expressed in terms of tons treated per man per shift. The costs of mining the shale and refining the crude shale oil vary with local conditions and are not specially influenced by the source of the crude. But the cost of distilling the shale in terms of tons per man shift seems to be the basis of any proper comparison of costs. After considerable experimenting, ranging from laboratory tests up to and including quantities of fifteen to twenty tons, it was evident that a plant might be made up of an indefinite number of units operating in concert. The economic size of the units, however, would .have to be determined by experiment. The general theory of our process contemplates a regulated combus-tion of the fixed carbon in the spent shale, in its incan-descent condition after all the oil has been driven out of it; and a transfer of the resultant heat to the mass of raw shale above.

IT is not known when silica sand was first noticed along the north coast of Puerto Rico, but the first mention of its occurrence was made in 1922, by N. L. Britton,1 who described its presence in isolated patches extending from Loiza westward beyond Manati. Further observations were made in 1925 and 1926 by Meyerhoff,2 who extended the known occurrences still farther westward to the low hill belt in the Quebradillas limestone immediately south of Hatillo. The extraordinary purity of the sands, which in most localities exhibit no contamination from the nonsiliceous materials surrounding them, was quickly appreciated, and the feasibility of utilizing them for the manufacture of glass was investigated, initially by the Committee on Mineral Resources3 and later (1936) by the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration and by H. C. Ray, mining engineer of the Insular Bureau of Mines. In 1934 samples submitted to the Hazel Atlas Glass Co., of Washington, Pennsylvania, were reported to have the composition as shown in the table on column two. Appreciation of the quality of the sand prompted geological and quantitative studies of the deposits, as well as commercial investigations to determine the feasibility of utilizing it locally or on the mainland for the manufacture of glass containers. [ ] DISTRIBUTION OF THE SANDS The quartz sands consistently lie within the outcrop area of the Quebradillas limestone, the youngest of the Miocene formations in the Tertiary coastal plain that fringes the northern coast of the Island. Many of the deposits are closely associated with limestone outcrops, but some appear to be embedded in lagoonal sediments at some distance from rock exposures, and at least one deposit, near Dorado, has been reworked by waves and littoral currents. With this single known exception, the deposits consist of irregular, patternless patches of white sand, which have sharply defined contacts with the surrounding material. Although patches of sand are present in a 90-km. belt that is not more than 5 km. wide, extending from Loiza to Hatillo, they attain maximum size, purity and number in the north central coastal area between Dorado and Barceloneta. The papers of Mr. W. J. Keep, read before this Institute, have called attention to the influence of aluminum in cast-iron and on iron and steel castings. The information in these papers is interesting and valuable, as showing the modifications which iron undergoes when dosed with sufficient aluminum to form a distinct alloy, the quantity of the alloying metal used being such that the amount remaining in the casting is sufficient to be readily discovered by analysis. The same is also true of the so-called aluminum-steel patented by R. A. Hadfield, where the proportions specified are such as to leave in the finished steel from one-twentieth to one-tenth of one per cent. of aluminum. Whether these alloys are of practical utility or not has thus far . not been proved by any extended tests on a large scale, and until such evidence is forthcoming it may be safely held, provisionally, that such a use of aluminum is of doubtful utility. But there is another function which this metal can perform that has been known for some time, and which has passed beyond the experimental stage, viz.: its beneficial effect in securing sound ingots. It appears to be a general property of all metals when in the fluid state and at a temperature considerably above their points of fusion, to contain gas, either dissolved from the air or frorn the furnace, or else self-evolved by internal reactions. Silver, perhaps, shows this power in the highest degree, and mercury and lead in the least; midway stands steel—the quantity of gas which it can hold in solution, or " occlusion " as it has been called, varies with its temperature, its composition, and its mode of manufacture. When the steel sets in the mould, a portion of this gas escapes, causing blow-holes, surface defects, boiling-over, wildness, and quite a long train of troubles, familiar to all practical steel-makers. J. M. HARTMAN, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Fackenthal can remember some queer things that occurred at Durham, Pa., Aug. 3, 1876, while he was superintendent. The furnace was working stiff, i.e., blast-pressure 10 to 11 pounds, which was high pressure for those days. With this pressure there was some circulation through the stock. At 9 p.m., flushed cinder. After flushing, air was thrown off' for a moment to " bot up "; the keeper turned the lever and threw on air just as the scaffold dropped, which eased up the pressure to 4¼ pounds. The air-receiver is twice as large at Durham as at other places. The air from this receiver, added to the two seven-foot blowers, gave an extra large volume, which, rushing into the furnace, fired the finely-divided carbon, causing an explosion that threw part of the stock in the furnace out into the open air, threw up the bell-and-hopper with the tunnel-head plates, and gave off' a large volume of carbondust. The bell-and-hopper going up first, the stock followed, and, striking the bell-and-hopper, was deflected in a shower over the cast-house roof, breaking the slates. Sitting at the corner of the engine-house at the time, the stock pelted me, when I ran around the corner to get rid of it. Remembering there were two men at the furnace-top, I shut down the engines, and, running to the top, found them sitting in the hoist-house enjoying the fire-works. The explanation of this explosion is simple. There is in the blast-furnace a bed of fuel extending up, say, 16 to 18 feet above the tuyeres; in this bed of fuel some stray pieces of limestone are found, and a few pieces of unreduced ore; but, generally speaking, it is all fuel. On this bed of fuel is the zone of fusion. In this zone the descending stock is liquefied, except the fuel; the iron, melting, drops out of the ore, and the gangue unites with lime, forming cinder. Anthracite, as sent to market, comes under three general terms of description: characteristics, source and size. Anthracite is generally classified as white ash, red ash, or Lykens Valley. The white ash coals are sometimes further described as "hard" or "free-burning." Lehigh white ash would come under the former description and Shamokin white ash under the latter. As a rule, it may be said that the nearer the origin of the coal to the western extremity of the anthracite region, the softer and more free-burning it is. Indeed, for many years the coal from Trevorton, at the western tip of the Middle Western field, was classified as "semianthracite" in the shipment reports. Lykens Valley coal is always a red ash coal, with a higher volatile content than the general run of anthracite, and consequently free-burning. The name does not exclusively indicate the neighborhood in which the coal is dug, but rather refers to the beds from which it is obtained. These beds lie, not above the Pottsville conglomerate, as is the rule, but encased in it. The extreme eastern limit of the Lykens Valley beds would seem to be about Tremont, in Schuylkill County, and the Natalie mine, near Mount Carmel. There are, of course, traces of these beds farther to the east, but they do not seem to be workable. There are as many as six of the Lykens Valley measures found in the conglomerate at some points, but to a large extent they are unworkable. Whether this coal is obtained in the Lykens Valley proper, where the beds were first identified, or from the Shamokin Valley, it is always Lykens Valley coal, and it has long been considered a premium coal, especially desirable for domestic use, particularly when a quick, hot kitchen fire is desired. Coals are, of course, frequently marketed under special names—Jeddo, Scranton, Kingston, Old Company Lehigh, Famous Reading, Lacka-wanna, etc.—which, of course, have the trade significance which their producers and vendors have built up. TWINNING has long been recognized as a possible mode of deformation in crystalline solids and has been studied in a wide variety of crystals.&apos; Recently, deformation markings which have the topographical characteristics of twins have been seen in tungsten" and the body-centered cubic alloys of tungsten and molybdenum with rhenium.3-7 These markings have been identified as twins because: 1) they are visible after polishing and etching;2,3 2) their formation is accompanied by an audible click and a drop in load;4 and 3) the habit plane is {112}, the plane which has been identified as the twinning plane for several body-centered cubic metals.&apos; However, there has been no published evidence for the specific determination of the twinning direction in rhenium alloys of tungsten and molybdenum, because usually the deformation twins were not broad enough to be detected with a conventional X-ray beam. Consequently, [111] is inferred as the twinning direction since the latter must lie in a plane of symmetry perpendicular to the twinning plane (112). As Sims and Jaffee3 and Lawley and Maddin4 have shown, the addition of rhenium to molybdenum and tungsten increases the ductility of the alloy over that of the pure metal, but twinning is much more profuse in these alloys than in the pure elements, particularly at Mo-35 pct Re*and W-30 pct Re. Since twinning is often associated with brittle fracture in iron8 and the silicon-irons,9 direct experimental proof that the deformation markings in tungsten and molybdenum alloys of rhenium are twins seemed to be needed. Using the Laue back-reflection technique, the deformation markings in a Mo-35 pct Re alloy are shown to be deformation twins. The twins have a (112) habit plane and the twinning direction is <111>. The Mo-35 pct Re specimen used was taken from a 0.060-in. zone-refined single crystal deformed 6 pct in tension at 78°K. The Laue back-reflection technique, with a film to specimen distance of 2 cm, and white radiation from a copper target were used.

Of the various reagents employed in the flotation of zinc-bearing ores none have attained the wide popularity that is enjoyed at present by xanthates, copper sulfate and cyanides. This situation suggests the existence of an unusual dependence in the reactions of these chemicals and of sphalerite. A study of the flotative characteristics of sphalerite when using xanthates as collectors, as related to the chemical properties of copper salts and cyanides, has therefore been conducted at the University of Utah by the writer and his associates1 during the period of 1926 to 1929. In perusing the technical literature concerning the flotation of zinc ores and of zinc-bearing lead and copper ores, a striking and general lack of agreement as to the floatability of sphalerite was observed. The underlying cause for the erratic behavior of sphalerite has not been definitely ascertained but the presence in various proportions of iron sulfide in solid solution in the sphalerite has frequently been implicitly regarded as a major factor in this respect. Although the effect of iron sulfide in solid solution in sphalerite has not been investigated in relation to the behavior of sphalerite in flotation, it is likely that it is not as important a factor as was thought at one time. The variable float-ability of sphalerite has led to the use of fairly large amounts of cyanide to prevent its flotation in the case of certain ores, whereas mere fractions of that amount of cyanide, or even none at all, have been sufficient to achieve the same result for other ores2 Similarly, the amount of copper sulfate used to promote the flotation of sphalerite has been found to vary widely. The ability of activated charcoal or carbon to adsorb complex metal ions has been recognized for many years, but it wasn&apos;t until the late 1940s and early 1950s that attempts were made to employ carbon-In-Pulp or C. I. P. processing to the recovery of gold. Early plants using the process were those at the Golden Cycle in Cripple Creek, Colorado, the Getchell Mine near Golconda, Nevada, and at the Idria Mine in Honduras. Recovery of the carbon from the pulp was done by screening or flotation, and recovery of gold from the carbon was done by burning the carbon (a very difficult task) or by sending it to a smelter. Unfortunately at the time, the price of gold was still fixed at $3-5 per ounce and labor costs were rising to the point where these mines were no longer able to operate. Consequently, C. I. P. treatment was temporarily forgotten. In the early 1970s, however, Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota, were being forced by environmental regulations to discontinue the use of mercury for amalgamation in their 7,500 ton per day plant, and at the same time were encountering high labor costs in the slime circuit of the plant, where over 2,000 tons of slimes were filtered each day in Merrill plate and frame filter presses. Shortly before that, researchers of the United States Bureau of Mines had developed the caustic -cyanide method of stripping gold from activated carbon and an electrolytic cell (now known as the Zadra cell) to recover gold from the carbon strip liquor. Homestake and the United States Bureau of Mines then jointly operated a C. I. P. pilot plant at Lead. Results were immediately favorable and a 2,400 ton per day C. I. P. plant was then built to treat the slime fraction of the Homestake ore. (See Au and Ag Cyanidation Plant Practice, Volume I, SME of AIME, 1975. Later, Homestake built a second plant at Creede, Colorado, to treat the slime fraction of the tailings from a silver-lead flotation plant. Next was Duval Corporation&apos;s 3,000 ton per day C. I. P. plant at Battle Mountain, Nevada. Both of these latter plants are described in this volume. C. I. In order to hoist the ore according to grades, stope samples are taken. Three equidistant grooves are picked across the breast at right angles to the dip of the ore, the part removed being caught in the hand and then put into a small bag. When there is broken ore in the breast, the lines are continued down the pile and a small amount taken at intervals of the length of the sampler&apos;s pick handle. The quantity of sample from each breast will be between 2 and 3 Ib. If there are two grades of ore, bessemer and non-bessemer, there are two sets of brass checks for each chute, each check stamped with the number of the chute; one set of checks has the word "bessemer" and the other "non-bessemer." Before any ore is removed from the chutes, it is the duty of one man to see that the proper set of checks is at each chute in the mine. As each motor car is loaded, a check is attached to it. When the train reaches the shaft, the sample man removes the check on the first car, notes the grade, and directs the motorman to spot it over the proper pocket. The check is then hung on a hook with the number corresponding to the chute from which the ore came. The sample man throws a short rope with a knot in the end over the car and at the point where the knot falls a standard scoopful is taken. This is placed in a large bag that hangs directly under the hook containing the checks for that particular chute. These chute samples represent a check on the grading of the various contracts and by counting the tags a check is obtained on the miner&apos;s tally of the ore going into each chute; the total of the checks represents the hoist. During the stocking season, a standard scoopful is taken from each top tram car. This sample is taken in the same way as the chute samples at the plats underground. Top-of-car Samples These samples are taken by using a rope, preferably a clothesline, knotted each 18 in. of its length, and a hammer and a scoop. The standard scoop measures 31/2 by 21/4 by 11/4 in. and holds about 1/2 Ib. of ore. The rope, as applied to the usual railroad cars at the mine, is knotted into fifteen sections. The results of repressuring (or gas-drive) have been very encouraging to the several companies doing experimental work along these lines in California. The most notable examples are the Shell and the Union Oil companies at Dominguez, the Marland Oil Co. at Seal Beach, and the California Petroleum Corpn. at South Mountain. The results of the Marland test at Seal Beach are interesting in that re pressuring was started while several wells were still flowing; also, on account of the high pressures required to overcome the hydrostatic pressure exerted by high-head edge water. The well first chosen for repressuring is about halfway up the flank of the structure and had been on the beam making about 250 bbl. of fluid daily, cutting about 60 per cent. emulsion. The fluid lcvel was 230 ft. from the surface and the top of the sand was 4393 ft. Tubing was run to 4000 ft. with a packer and the space above the packer was filled with water to balance the high pressures. Gas was started in slowly to allow the fluid to be pushed back into the sand, and required three days at a pressure of 1500 Ib. per sq. in. before starting into formation. The pressure was once built up to 1800 Ib. and the compressor was shut down for a few hours. When again started, the well took gas at 1500 Ib., and after about three weeks the pressure was dropped to 1450 Ib. The present pressures required range between 1400 and 1450 lb. Volumes as high as 1,500,000 cu. ft. per 24 hr. were put into the well. Increases as high as 50 per cent. in production were obtained in wells up-structure with very little increase in wells down-structure. Also, the water cut on one edge well materially decreased. After about 40 days the repressuring was moved to two wells farther down-structure and the well originally repressured was put on production. The result of this was a great increase in the production of wells one location farther down-structure, a rapid increase in one well one location up-structure, and a decrease in production of the wells farthest up-structure. Later the gas started to short-cut to the nearest well down-structure, nullifying to a certain extent the effects of the repressuring work. PREVIOUS to the war, this country depended on Europe for its supply of a number of alloys of great importance in the manufacture of electrical apparatus and equipment. When this source was cut off shortly after the beginning of hostilities and the small stocks in the United States were exhausted, either inferior substitutes had to be used or the manufacture of the apparatus suspended. Since electrical equipment was of primary importance in the prosecution of the war, the substitutes had to be used until the composition and processes of manufacture of the alloys could be determined. Included among these alloys was one generally known as manganin, which is composed chiefly of copper and manganese and which, beside having a low-temperature coefficient of resistance, has a low thermal electromotive force against copper. These qualities make it valuable for the manufacture of electrical instruments and machines in which it is used in the shape of wire, rod, and strip. As a result of these circumstances, an investigation was started to deter mine how manganin could be made on a commercial basis so that a product of uniform quality and the necessary electrical characteristics could be produced. The object was to procure an alloy with temperature coefficient of resistance not greater than T 1 X 10-5 per ° C. and a thermal e.m.f. against copper no greater than that of the imported material. It is characteristic of manganin that the temperature-resistance curve is not a straight line but has a peak, which varies in position with different samples; it is most desirable, however, to have it at a temperature of 25° C. if possible. The coefficients of manganin from all records available ranged from a large negative to a large positive value. The composition as reported by different authorities is given in Table 1. Prof. Matthew A. Hunter, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, made up a number of small melts of manganin in a graphite crucible and the one that he reported as having the best coefficient gave the following analysis: Copper, 83.6 per cent.; nickel 2.5 per cent.; manganese,-13.6 per cent.; iron, 0.3 per cent. An analysis of a sample of German manganin gave the following: Copper, 82.6 per cent.; nickel, 3.8 per cent.; manganese, 12.8 per cent.; iron 0.7 per cent.

WHEN starting a series of experiments on the use of powdered coal in lead blast furnaces to replace coke, I realized that in copper smelting the problem is simpler because the sulfur recovers the copper in the form of matte. In lead smelting there are greater difficulties because a reducing atmosphere must be maintained in the active, zone corresponding to each tuyere in order to get the best recovery of lead. Therefore, the feed of powdered coal must be quite regular, uniform and under control. The molten products issuing from the taphole are the resultant of the work of all the tuyeres and it can readily be con-ceived that one part of the furnace may be forming slag with a higher lead content than the slag formed in other parts of the furnace. At first, we used only one tuyere situated on the back of the furnace. This was for the purpose of getting all of our regulations under the regular operating conditions. We tried every known system of feed and found they were not dependable and our present system was finally worked out, and so far as we know, is the only working system that will give uniformly good saving in lead blast furnaces. We placed a Bristol self-recording thermometer on the feed floor. This gives a 24-hr. continuous record of the temperature of the gases leaving the furnace. We put a self-recording gage on the "15-lb." air used in the injector. A second recording Bristol gage was put on the low-pressure air (40 oz.). I realized that it was necessary that we should know the exact weight of coal going into each tuyere and that it should &apos;be under observation at all times. L. W. Kirk was assigned to the problem and developed the open sight feed and the distributor, so that we now have the coal being fed into each tuyere in sight of the men in charge. We have an apothecary&apos;s balance beside the furnace, and the operator takes the pan and inserts it under the stream of falling powdered coal for one minute, and places the pan on the scale, the other scale pan having weights indicating the desired amount to be fed to each tuyere per minute.

In a recent paper on the intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift operations as opposed to continuous injection, Morgan Walker presented a comparative table showing the effect on oil and gas production from the same wells under the two methods of operation.&apos; This table carried a column showing the formational gas-oil ratios under each method, computed by deducting the volume of input gas from the volume of trap gas. During the entire spring and summer of 1928, the present writer had been engaged on some extensive test car tests of rich gas in Glenpool, seeking, primarily, for an explanation of the apparent loss of gasoline during the summer season between the field meters and the plant master meter. Tests at several of the field meters where the richest gas was obtained regularly failed to check with other tests on the same gas made farther along the line, and the difference was not made up by the quantity of drip gasoline collected between the points. In the course of these tests, the final outcome of which is immaterial to the present purpose, an attempt was made to construct a curve representing the relationship between gasoline content of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet and the shrinkage in the volume of gas treated as a result of removing the condensible fractions. Such a curve was made, expressed in units of gallons per thousand cubic feet on the abcissa and the ratio vapor volume to liquid volume on the ordinate. This curve is a rectangular hyperbola and shows that 3 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of raw gas as a vapor occupied much less space, per gallon, than did 1 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of another sample of gas. This is, in general, corroborated by converting to the same units the residue settlement curves prepared by the Tidal Oil Co. and by the Natural Gasoline Manufacturers Assn., though the three curves, when plotted together, occupy entirely different positions on the paper, as shown in Fig. 1. EARLIER investigations of the potential-drop-ratio method of electrical prospecting have indicated that under suitable conditions this method is well adapted to the location of formation boundaries in stratified ground. A description of this development was given several years ago by H. Lundberg and Th. Zuschlag.1 The curves published by these authors for the potential-drop-ratio variation above a horizontal contact indicated a definite relation of the position of the curve peak to the depth of the interface. The theory underlying this relation was subsequently studied by Z. Mitera in greater detail,2 and the theoretical deductions were compared with the results of tank experiments. The investigations available at this writing were confined to studies of horizontal formation boundaries. It is the purpose of this paper to extend the scope of the previous work to the problem of dipping layers. THEORY Consider the case of three media of different resistivities, whose interfaces are not parallel. If a point-source is located in one of these interfaces, its images do not lie in a straight line, but on the circumference of a circle whose center is at the hypothetical junction of the interfaces. R. F. Aldredge3 determined the relation that exists between the degrees of dip of the two interfaces and the distances between the various images and the point for which the potential is to be found. As seen in Fig. I, three media of resistivities po, pi, and p2 are involved, and the source I is located at the interface of the media (po) and (pi). The perpendicular depth of the lower interface is h,? is the dip, R is the distance between source I and potential point P, and r is the distance between the images and that point. To distinguish between images lying above the ground interface and those below, the notation "odd" and "even" images will be employed; images below the ground interface will be termed "odd" and those above "even." SOME writers believe that when austenite transforms completely into pearlite on slow cooling through the thermal critical range, such transformation does not imply the formation of any of the so-called transition constituents: martensite, troostite and sorbite. Might it not be claimed with as much justification that when water freezes it does so suddenly, solid ice being obtained without passing through the intermediate stages of ice and water? Obviously, regardless of the speed of solidification, this would be erroneous. Before reaching the completed solid condition, this must of necessity pass through an unbroken series of stages when the system consists of mixtures of water and of ice, the former decreasing and the latter increasing in amount. Are not these "transition" stages in the freezing of water similar to the transition stages occurring in the transformation of austenite into pearlite? To clarify, let us consider in Fig. 1 the mechanism of the transformation of eutectoid steel from its austenitic to its pearlitic condition as it cools slowly through its thermal critical range. It is generally admitted that this transformation is the result of two distinct phenomena: (1) the allotropic change of gamma iron into alpha iron and (2) the crystallizing out of solution of the carbide Fe3C. Whether this crystallizing of Fe3C implies also its formation is immaterial for our purpose. In other words, whether it is the carbon in atomic dispersion which is present in gamma iron or molecules of Fe3C has no bearing upon the matter to be discussed. The transformation of gamma iron into alpha iron cannot take place suddenly. It must of necessity be progressive, regardless of the speed with which it may take place. At A, for instance, there would be present AB gamma iron and BC alpha iron. The distance MN does not refer to falling temperature, but to the passage of time. It may be assumed that the transformation takes place at a constant temperature (the Ar321 point). In a similar way, the crystallization of Fe3C out of the austenite solid solution must be progressive as depicted between M and N. At A there would be present AB gamma iron, BC alpha iron, CD carbon dissolved in gamma and in alpha iron and DE Fe3C. AT the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rejections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blast furnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. The die pressing of brass may be described as a method of producing irregularly shaped parts of brass and other copper alloys by hot deformation in a die under pressure. Die pressing of brass was first developed as an improvement on sand castings in order to obtain irregularly shaped articles of brass with superior surfaces, a closer tolerance in dimensions, a denser structure, freedom from porosity and elimination of the relatively large amount of scrap invariably attached to sand castings. The freedom from sandy surfaces with consequent greater tool life in machining operations was also recognized as well as elimination of losses due to the uncovering of blowholes in machining operations. Die pressing also gave alloys of superior strength. Die pressings today are made from extruded rod or shapes, according to design of the part to be made. The greater number of pressings are made from round rod, because of its relatively lower cost and ease of handling. The rod is first sheared or sawed into desired lengths, the diameter of rod used and length of "slug" or "rivet" depending upon ultimate weight and shape of the die-pressed part to be made and design of die. The dimensions of the slug are figured so as to give the minimum amount of scrap to be sheared from the pressing as it comes from the die. Extruded shapes having I, T or X sections are often used when the finished part is to have a similar shape or heavy sections are joined by relatively light sections of considerable length. A rod bent in the shape of a U is also used on occasion, for similar reasons. Proper shearing of the slugs is of considerable importance. The sheared ends of the slugs should be as flat and straight as possible. Improperly sheared ends having an angle to the axis of the bar or a rough, uneven surface are liable to give folds or laps in the finished pressing and proportionately high rejections. The property of shearing varies considerably with different alloys and should be considered in the selection of a material for a given part. Where satisfactory shearing is not possible, the slugs may be cut from the bar by power saws. Extruded

Inasmuch as there has been a great deal of activity in this district recently, a paper of this kind should treat of all the various phases of mining, namely, prospecting, developing, and operating. Prospecting .. Where ore is found at a depth of 100 ft. (30 m.) or more, the prospect work is done by churn drilling. Several makes of churn drills are used in this work, both steam- and gasoline-driven machines being used. The drilling is usually started with a 6-in. bit, and the size of the bit is reduced, if necessary, as the hole is advanced. It is general practice to drill from 100- to 400-ft. holes, but this is governed entirely by the location and formation of the ground. In drilling sheet ground, close spacing of drill holes is unnecessary, but in narrow orebodies, the holes are spaced from 15 to 50 ft. (4.6 to 15 m.) apart. Ten years ago, very few assays were kept of the drilling, but during recent years records have been kept very accurately, showing the location, elevation, assays, and also the vertical section of the hole. After the orebody is reached, cuttings are taken every 2 or 3 ft. (0.6 to 0.9 m.) samples being sometimes taken by pouring the water off the cuttings and taking a portion of the coarse material for assay. It has been found, however, that very often the sludge material poured off with the water contains high mineral values. To overcome this, cuttings from each 2 or 3 ft. are put in a container, and, after the water is evaporated, sample for assay is taken by means of Jones samplers. Permanent records of cuttings showing various formations are kept in glass jars or glued on large cards. Drilling at present is costing from $1.25 to $1.50 per foot.
