The group of claims, comprising over 1,100 acres, located at Maitland (formerly known as Garden City), in the Ida Gray mining district, Lawrence county, South Dakota, are now being developed and operated by Alexander Maitland, the owner. Prior to the acquisition of this property two years ago by Mr. Maitland, but little work had been done in this district, and little was known of the extent of the ore-deposits. Recent development, however, has opened up some very promising ore-shoots. The ores so far encountered are the so-called " Potsdam siliceous ores," occurring in the flat formation lying immediately above the Cambrian quartzite, which dips at this locality about 12º. Both oxidized and blue ores are found, and the latter have proven particularly refractory to treat. No prospecting in the underlying slates of the Archean period has so far been attempted; but this work is one of the future considerations in the development of the property. Small quantities of blue ores are unavoidably sent to the mill, but special care is taken to send only the oxidized ores for the cyanide treatment. The ores, being close-grained and hard, have given considerable trouble in their treatment. Pyrrhotite arid pyrite exist in about equal proportions; arsenic, copper, and traces of antimony and tellurium are encountered, and considerable quantities of bismuth have been found in the zinc-box precipitates. The silver in the low-grade ores is slightly greater than the gold, while in the high-grade ores the reverse is generally true. Table I., showing the variations in the analyses of these ores, gives a fair idea of their general character. SILICON-iron .under certain conditions of processing and annealing will form a cube texture. The occurrence of this texture in thin tapes of silicon iron was first reported by Assmus, Detert, and Ibe.' They concluded that the cube texture in their material formed by a secondary re crystallization process. In the course of present investigations on the development of the cube texture and the mechanisms involved in its formation by secondary re-crystallization it was found that under certain conditions the cube texture was replaced by a cube-on-edge or (110) [001] texture. We call this phenomenon tertiary re crystallization since it follows secondary recrystallization. The secondary recrystallization occurs after primary recrystallization and a substantial amount of normal grain growth. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the occurrence of tertiary recrystallization and the structure and texture prior to and after tertiary recrystallization. The primary and secondary recrystallization structures and textures are the subject of another study and will be referred to briefly in the discussion of results. Evidence will be presented for the view that the dominant driving force for tertiary recrystallization is derived from the surface free energy which depends on the crystallographic planes presented to the gas-metal interface. In the absence of boundary restraining forces (dispersed phases, thermal grooves, and so forth) a sufficiently large difference in surface free energy across a grain boundary would produce boundary migration away from the center of curvature of the boundary intersection line in the surface of the sample according to risher.2 Therefore, particular attention was paid to observation of the direction of motion of these surface boundary lines. Furthermore, measurements of the actual boundary curvatures could be used to estimate the driving force supplied by surface free energy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were prepared by hot and cold-rolling vacuum-melted ingots of iron containing 3 pct Si to strips 0.012 and 0.006 in. thick. The ingots contained less than 0.005 wt pct impurities. The rolled strips were cut into samples approximately 1 in. wide by 3 in. long and were electropolished to remove surface imperfections. In a previous investigation1 the authors studied the effect of pressure on the reduction of iron ores by hydrogen. With hydrogen as a reducing agent, the rate of reduction was increased substantially by increasing the pressure from 1 to 2 atmospheres. The results with hydrogen prompted the present study of the effect of pressure on reduction with carbon monoxide and with mixtures of carbon monoxide and nitrogen. Features of Reduction Process The gas stream in the lower part of the blast furnace always contains sufficient concentrations of reducing gases to complete reduction provided sufficient time is allowed for the reaction to proceed. Reducing gases react immediately with the iron oxide on the surface of lumps of ore. However, as the unreduced surface recedes from the easily accessible exterior of the lump, the reaction proceeds by virtue of the diffusion of the gases into and out of individual pieces. The rate of diffusion of gases, which undoubtedly plays an important role in the reduction of iron ores, depends on several factors, most important of which are: (1) molecular weight or density, (2) pressure, (3) temperature, (4) concentration gradient. Thus, the rate of reduction of a lump of iron ore at any temperature will depend not only on the specific reaction rate but also upon: (1) available surface of unreduced iron oxide, (2) rate of diffusion of the reducing gas to the reacting surface, (3) rate of effusion of the gaseous products of the reaction from the reacting surface, (4) adsorption of the gases on the reacting surface. I. Historical. Barite has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. Geographical and Geological Distribution. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State—namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties: Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties—Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell—but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

I'm sure many of you have wondered what the term "Cross Flow Filtration" means. I shall explain it so that you more clearly understand it, and I hope you will be able to make it a useful tool for you in the future. In the simplest form of cross flow filtration contaminated fluid. or feed stream, is fed at a high velocity down the center of a porous tube, clear fluid weeps through the porous wall of the tube while the suspended solids concentrate in and are swept away by the feed stream. (See figure A). The high velocity flow of the feed stream tends to keep the inside of the tube free from a build up of contamination. By utilizing this cross flow approach to filtration, we have been able to concentrate such things as paint pigments, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, precipitated metals such as uranium yellowcake or silver, cadmium, some metal hydroxides, as well as gelatinous particles such as yeast cells. You will recognize that cross flow filtration lends itself to a recirculation loop system due to the necessity of maintaining a high velocity on the inside of the tube. This means that we generally have a storage tank from which we are recirculating, and the solids will concentrate in the storage tank. (See figure B). The storage tank design becomes an integral part of the total system and is very important to the total function of the system. The cross flow filter system requires only low pressure, and will work with centrifugal pumps, diaphram pumps or in some cases no pump at all. As an example, if we wanted to filter a 10 GPM (37.8 liters/min.) stream that contained 1% of submicronic particulate, we would flow the 10 GPM (37.8 liters/min.) into the storage tank and recirculate through the filter at a flow of anywhere from 30 GPM to 100 GPM (113.6 to 378.5 liters/min.) depending upon the filterability of the particles from the liquid. As the contaminated fluid recirculates, the solids will build up in the storage tank and loop until they reach a level, which is dependent upon the design of the tank. Then the settling rate in the tank becomes equal to the amount of the solids being fed to the tank, and as a result you reach an equilibrium in the amount of solids being presented to the inside of the porous tubing. We have in effect created a dynamic settling tank or thickener. A flow of 10 GPM (37.8 liters/min.) of clear filtrate comes off for either recycle or disposal with periodic removal of thick mud from the bottom of the tank. The thick mud can be either processed through a centrifuge, a rotary drum filter. a flat bed pressure type filter, or other means. Often the small volume of filtrate from the mud de-watering stream can be recycled back into the recirculation tank so that any fines in the feedback are again concentrated, thus closing the loop on the continuous process 100% removal system. Cross flow filtration will not do efficient molecular separation. We work primarily with discrete solids but we do separate them totally from the liquid carrier fluid. I know some of you will raise your eyebrows when I say that we remove 100% of the particulate, but in measurement tests, we have measured the filtrate cleanliness with instruments that record as low as .05 ppm and the instruments read zero, so that it is less than .05 ppm.

"When l hear - I normally remember 10 percent When I hear and see - I can remember 15 to 25 percent When I hear, see, and do - I usually remember up to 50 percent" While this is not a truism in relation to each and every individual; on the average, this is the case. If we use this as a premise in training operator and maintenance personnel, then it must be obvious that we can't rely on a mere presentation, even one which includes the needed classroom participation and/or hands on work, to do a thorough job and to make this personnel totally proficient - 100 percent proficient. We have to have some other device some other means to make this a continuing process, a process wherein the people can grow in knowledge while performing their normal duties. We have to feel that the words "normal duties" are the key to the whole program. If you would ask a crusher operator what his duty is, he might say "To run this crusher so that we produce 250 tons per hour of a minus 13mm (minus 1/2 ") product." A maintenance man could say "To fix the unit when there is a problem." Both of these answers are legitimate but, they are only a part of the total picture. In order for each of these individuals to do the best job, he must know not just the specifics about the machine he works with or on - he must know the interrelation of all the machinery in the crushing circuit - how the efficiency of each machine affects the others - why a minor problem on one piece of equipment can generate a major problem for another unit which follows it or precedes it. In short, you cannot separate machine operation and maintenance from the application of the equipment in the crushing circuit - and obtaining this knowledge must be a part of the normal duty of crushing plant personnel. As an example a crusher - any crusher - is designed to crush oversize material. It is not designed to accept feed which is already at or less than the required product size. If sized material goes to the crusher, increase wear results by using the crusher as a chute or the crushing chamber can be clogged up with the fines. This latter point is particularly true with cone crushers, especially in the third (Short Head) stage of crushing. When a Gyradisc is used (fourth stage crushing) it is even more critical that the product be removed before the material goes to the crusher. The crusher cannot control this - the screen ahead of the crusher does. The screen must be of adequate size and be functioning properly to allow the crusher to work at optimum. Screening is both an art and a science. Since there are so many variables which affect the output of the screen, it is always best to have a screen which is larger than the sizing calculations dictate. The screens are the most important elements in the circuit. Without screens, specification materials cannot be made and the size of the screen will ultimately aid or hinder your ability to get the most production possible out of the plant. Progress in the facilities for handling mining products has been largely superinduced by the necessities of commercial economy ren dered requisite in order to meet the demand of competition. So rapid has been the depreciation in the value of mineral products, primarily due to the disproportionate increase of output over con sumption, that it may be justly claimed that mining, when considered as a commercial success, depends largely upon the ease and cheap ness by which the products are brought to the surface of the ground. AS reported in a recent paper,' we attempted to measure the response to stress of as-quenched Fe-Ni-C martensites (Ms of -35°C) in both the micro-and macrostrain regions. To avoid effects associated with the diffusion of carbon, tensile specimens were quenched from room temperature at 78°K and tested after 15 min in situ. It was assumed that the transformation had terminated and that the retained austenite was essentially stable. In the tensile tests microplastic strains of the order of 10"* were measured at stresses below 20 ksi. It was concluded that the observed strains were due to the motion of dislocations in the martensite, the dislocations having been introduced during transformation. It was argued that transformation or plastic deformation of the retained austenite did not contribute to the non-elastic deformation measured in the microstrain region. In contradiction to the above argument, Magee and paxton2 have more recently shown that the strain due to isothermal transformation of retained austenite to martensite can contribute to plastic deformation at low stresses even at 78°K. Moreover we were unaware (nost)-a culpa) of a paper by Machlin and cohen3 in which it was clearly shown by resistance measurements that isothermal transformation at 78°K leads to the formation of an additional 1 pct or so of martensite after the initial athermal transformation, even in the absence of external stress. We have verified Machlin and Cohen's results in the following manner. A capacitance microstrain gage was placed on a tensile specimen before immersion in liquid nitrogen. After 15 min at 78°K detectable burst phenomena had ceased and it was then possible to obtain a continuous record of the additional extensional strain due to spontaneous isotherma1 transformation. The results for the Fe-Ni-C series studied are shown in Fig. 1, and are similar to those of Machlin and Cohen who investigated a low-

By streaming potential techniques, the zeta potential of quartz has been measured as a function of the concentration of dodecylammonium salts at different pH values. These experiments indicate that adsorption of dodecylammonium ions takes place as individual aminium ions until a certain critical concentration is reached in the double layer, at which point the adsorbed collector ions begin to associate into patches of ions, called hemi-micelles. Because of its effect on the surface potential of quartz, pH controls the adsorption of dodecylammonium ions. The value of cooperating agents and nonionized constituents of flotation systems is discussed. A PREVIOUS investigation' of the role of pH in the flotation of quartz with anionic collectors is here extended to an inquiry of how the cationic collector, dodecylammonium acetate, is adsorbed at the quartz-solution interface. The equilibrium amount of this collector adsorbed by quartz has already been measured as a function of concentration and pH.2,3 The weight of prior evidence has suggested that two mechanisms are involved in the adsorption of this collector by quartz, but with existing adsorption measurements alone it is not possible to determine what the mechanisms are. Gaudin and Bloecher2 postulated that a polymolec-ular adsorption coating begins to form before the first monolayer has been completed. Gaudin and Morrow4 indicated that a similar situation might exist in the film of dodecylammonium ions on hematite. A study of electrokinetic potentials at the quartz-solution interface provides some detail toward a fuller understanding of the adsorption mechanism. Experimental Results The zeta potential at the quartz-solution interface was calculated from streaming potential data measured with the apparatus described in detail in a thesis by Fuerstenau5 and briefly in a paper by Gaudin and Fuerstenau.1 The quartz used in these experiments was a 48/65-mesh fraction prepared in the manner described previously.' Zeta potential of quartz was obtained for various amounts of the amine salt at pH 4, 7, 10, 11. In

An experimental study has been made of the time dependence of internal .friction and modulus of rigidity in- freshly quenched steels at room temperature. The effects of frequency, composition, and various thermal treatments are given. The kinetic 1aws observed cannot be fully explained by the so-called first stage of tempering and the transformation of retained austenite. It is suggested that the observed phenomena are due to the progressive immobilization of dislocations introduced by the martensitic transformation. It is generally agreed that the conversion of tetraginal martensite into cubic ferrite and ce-mentite occurs in three stages which at moderate rates of heating take place in the following temperature ranges:'-3 a) The first stage involves mainly a partial loss of tetragonality of martensite and the formation of ?-carbide between 95" and 175oC. b) The second stage consists of the decomposition of retained austenite between 230 and 290' C. c) The third stage covers the formation of ce-mentite between 290o and 400' C. The kinetic laws of these heterogeneous reactions have also been the subject of isothermal studies. Thus, Roberts, Averbach. and cohen3 report a very low reaction rate with a eutectoid steel at room temperature. For example, less than 10 pet of the contraction associated with the first stage is observed after 50 hr at room temperature. Hollonlon, Jaffe, and Buffum4 show that under the same conditions less than 10 pet of the tetragonality is lost. These results have led to the belief that martensite is a relatively stable phase at room temperature. On the other hand, it is well known that important structural changes occur in martensitic steels during the first few minutes at room temperature after quenching. This pretempering has at least two important consequences. In the first place, freshly quenched steels have a tendency to crack at room temperature, a fact which leads to the necessity of tempering as soon as possible after the quench. Another important consequence of pretempering a steel for short periods of time at room temperature is the stabilization of the retained austenite. Thus, as shown by Cohen,5 a very pronounced stabilization is effected with holding periods of 30 min at room temperature. Since these two effects are apparently not caused by the heterogeneous reactions mentioned above, they must be related to the rearrangement of structural defects within the martensite and retained austenite. According to the modern theory of dislocations, the shears required to effect the austenite-marten-site transformation may be realized through the motion of dislocations at the austenite-martensite interface and within the martensite plates.6 In this way, a martensitic transformation closely resembles a plastic deformation. In cold-worked solids, high concentrations of dislocations are left immediately after the plastic deformation and it seems reasonable to assume that appreciable densities of dislocations should also appear in the wake of a martensitic transformation. A considerable part of the high hardness of martensite would then originate in the obstruction of dislocations in analogy

The transformation characteristics are found to resemble a similar binary alloy. The differences are due to the alpha iron particles. While strength properties of the isothermally transformed alloys are high, ductility is low, resulting in high notch sensitivity. The elastic modulus can be varied widely and correlates with strength. Abnormal grain growth sometimes occurs. A CONSIDERABLE amount of work has been done on the isothermal transformation of high purity aluminum bronzes using the methods pioneered by Davenport and Bain.' The first isothermal study of these alloys was made by Smith and Lind-lief,' but more recently Mack", " and Klier and Grymko5 have continued the work. In commercial aluminum bronzes, one or more elements are always added to refine the ß grain size and to improve the mechanical properties. The effect of these elements on the isothermal transformation has not been reported in the literature. No systematic study of the properties of isother-mally transformed aluminum bronzes has apparently been reported, although adequate information is available on their properties after more conventional heat treatments. The fact that a eutectoid alloy will reject face-centered cubic a during isothermal transformation at appropriate temperatures2'" warrants investigation of the properties of such structures. Another cogent reason for determination of properties is the fact that the modulus of elasticity of the eutectoid alloy varies widely with the nature of the heat treatment." Preliminary experiments7 indicated that a high purity eutectoid alloy would not give reproducible results in property determinations because of ex- cessive ß grain growth during heat treatment, a single ß grain frequently occupying the entire cross-section of a standard test bar. For this reason a commercial aluminum bronze containing iron as a grain growth inhibitor was used. The isothermal transformation diagram of the alloy was first determined. On this basis, the heat treatments necessary to produce representative structures were selected and the properties determined. Material A commercial alloy (Ampco Grade 20) of the following composition was used: Cu, 83.68 pct; Al, 12.31 pct; Fe, 3.68 pct; Ni, 0.28 pct; and Mn, 0.03 pct. This alloy proved to be very close to the eutectoid composition and may be compared with the accepted value of 11.8 pct A1 in the binary Cu-A1 system. Comparison is valid only because of the "negative replacement effect" of the iron? Since traces of excess y² are present, the alloy is slightly hyper-eutectoid. The material was received in the form of 3/4 in. round, hot extruded bars. Specimens of approximately ? in. thickness were cut from this stock and drilled to allow suspension in the salt bath. The structure of the as-received material varied from 5 to 40 pct a + y2* in a matrix of ß. The amount of a + y² present was dependent upon the ß grain size of the extruded material. A previous publication1§ has described the effect of quenching stresses on the lattice parameter values of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys particularly with reference to the solution and precipitation of CuAl². A similar study has been made of the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Attention has been directed in the present investigation to the magnitude of the quenching stresses as affected by the specimen size and shape, the number of solute atoms and the quenching rate. The effect of cooling stresses in causing plastic defomation or cracking has been considered in relation to the physical properties of the alloy On reheating alloys in the two-phase field, the time required for precipitation to occur has been observed in connection with the degrec of supersaturation, the rate of diffusion of the solute atoms as a function of the comparative atomic radii, degree of strain, temperature of reheating and grain size. A few qualitative comparisons on the relative effect of these factors have been drawn between the aluminum-copper alloys and the aluminum-magnesium alloys. Strain in Solid-solution Alloys A 10 per cent magnesium alloy ill the form of chill-cast bars was furnished by the Aluminum Company of America through the courtesy of L. W. Kempf. Additional alloys were prepared using alllminum (99.95 per cent Al) and high-grade magnesium. The alloys listed in Table 1 were melted in an Acheson graphite crucible under a flux of fused MgCl², CaC12, NaCI. Chill-cast rods were sealed under vacuum in Pyrex glass, homogenized several days at 450' C., air-cooled and machined to rods of from 1/8 to ¾-in. dia. ALTHOUGH some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861, Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheaval,1 yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fissuring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have followed them on the name lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the oil-bearing strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered.

UP TO and including 1931, the twelve mines that were treated in THE PORPHYRY COPPERS had produced 17.4 billion pounds of copper worth $2,820,000,000. With a little help from six others (three of them did not start output until 1954) that record had been increased at the end of 1955 to 60.5 billion pounds worth $10,440,000,000. Today, ten billion dollars is not as impressive as it once was; but it still represents a lot of value. It must be remembered that this is newly-created wealth, produced entirely from material considered worthless when the Porphyry era started about fifty years ago. At that time "rock" that contained less than forty pounds of copper per ton was regarded by competent mining engineers as value- less. It was not "ore" in the economic sense. Today, ore is being successfully exploited that contains less than twelve pounds of copper per ton. Also, in Peru, a typical Porphyry operation is being launched by a partnership of four United States mining companies that will involve an initial capital investment of $200,000,000 for mine development, plant construction, and the provision of related facilities. Of this project more will be said at the end of the chapter. The point I want to make now is twofold: (1) that phenomenal progress has been made in Porphyry engineering and technology; and (2) that exploitation of an important Porphyry copper deposit has become an industrial enterprise of truly great magnitude. Much had been accomplished by 1931; but that progress has been dwarfed by the achievements of the past 25 years- a fact that, in the nature of things, is as it should be.

Modelling of industrial sulphide flotation based on data collected in several flotation plants is discussed. A mechanistic approach is used in which it is recognised that flotation is a two stage pro- cess with concentration occurring both in the pulp and in the froth. The important features of the model, which is a kinetic model, are – 1. for each particle species there is a range of flotation rates which corresponds to the range of particle sizes, 2. the flotation rates of the liberated gangue particles which have no hydrophobic properties are dependent on the flotation rate of water and are controlled by variables such as the air and frother addition rates, and the pulp level, 3. as an approximation the valuable sulphide particles may be regarded as being present in two groups with high and low flotation rate constants, 4. increase in the addition rate of collector tends to increase the proportion of sulphide particles which are in the high flotation rate constant group. The actual flotation rate of each group of particles is a combination of an "inherent" flotation rate and a flotation rate which is dependent on the flotation rate of water, 5. at particular air and frother addition rates and pulp levels there is a physical limit to the rate at which particles can be transported into the concentrate and this is recognised in the model. The model has been used to study the steady state and dynamic properties of flotation circuits in operating plants. The assessment of the behaviour of composite particles is difficult because of the problem of quantitatively describing the surfaces of mineral particles. A method which is being developed to measure unpolished particles is described briefly.

UNTIL recently little attention has been paid to the effect of particle size on flotation. This has been especially true of material finer than 200 mesh.1 Particles of different sizes must behave differently in a flotation circuit; increased information along this line would be of practical use as well as of theoretical interest. The object of this study has been to determine what effect particle size has on floatability. The problem has been approached in two ways. One method consisted in a study of samples of the final products of several mills. These samples were sized and each size-product was analyzed for its important constituents. Bakelite briquettes2 of some of the products were made and studied under the microscope. This investigation is being continued, with particular reference to quantitative microscopic analysis of intermediate products of flotation plants. M In the other method of study, mixtures of pure minerals were ground to different degrees of fineness and floated. The products were then sized and analyzed. A study of the behavior of mixtures of pure sized minerals would have been illuminating, but after trial it was considered impractical on account of the tediousness of the large amount of elutriation required and the fact that the mineral particles would oxidize while being sized, preparatory to flotation. Broadly speaking, the following conclusions have been reached: 1. Results obtained by the two methods of study are in agreement. 2. The usual notion about the relative ease of flotation of very fine particles does not agree with the facts: 3. There is a time sequence of flotation with regard to particle size, the medium coarse particles floating first. 4. No successful method of floating extremely fine pulps has been found. 5. Recovery is optimum in a certain well-defined size range. 6. Selection is optimum in another well-defined size range.

A previous publication1§ has described the effect of quenching stresses on the lattice parameter values of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys particularly with reference to the solution and precipitation of CuAl². A similar study has been made of the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Attention has been directed in the present investigation to the magnitude of the quenching stresses as affected by the specimen size and shape, the number of solute atoms and the quenching rate. The effect of cooling stresses in causing plastic defomation or cracking has been considered in relation to the physical properties of the alloy On reheating alloys in the two-phase field, the time required for precipitation to occur has been observed in connection with the degrec of supersaturation, the rate of diffusion of the solute atoms as a function of the comparative atomic radii, degree of strain, temperature of reheating and grain size. A few qualitative comparisons on the relative effect of these factors have been drawn between the aluminum-copper alloys and the aluminum-magnesium alloys. Strain in Solid-solution Alloys A 10 per cent magnesium alloy ill the form of chill-cast bars was furnished by the Aluminum Company of America through the courtesy of L. W. Kempf. Additional alloys were prepared using alllminum (99.95 per cent Al) and high-grade magnesium. The alloys listed in Table 1 were melted in an Acheson graphite crucible under a flux of fused MgCl², CaC12, NaCI. Chill-cast rods were sealed under vacuum in Pyrex glass, homogenized several days at 450' C., air-cooled and machined to rods of from 1/8 to ¾-in. dia. THE art of natural-gas compressing is now over 25 years old, and has grown at practically the same rate as the increase in domestic natural-gas consumers. There are now over 200 natural-gas compressing stations in North America, aggregating more than 320,000 hp. of compressor capacity and representing a property value of more than $22,000,000, and compressing more than 85 per cent. of all the gas used. The age and magnitude of the art make it evident that the use of gas compressors is a recognized integral part and universal custom of the natural-gas business. The public also is not without its rights and vital interests in this problem. Approximately 1,700,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in North America are dependent upon gas compressors for their natural-gas service. That is, if the use of compressors were to be prohibited, the majority of these consumers would be unable to secure adequate natural-gas service. Each consumer represents between four and five persons, and it therefore follows that the comfort and well-being-as far as natural-gas service is concerned-of at least 8,000,000 persons would be affected if the use of natural-gas compressors should be prohibited. These 1,700,000 consumers have invested, in services, house piping, fixtures, and appliances, an average of about $90 each, or an aggregate of $153,000,000, which is much more than the companies' investment in gas compressors. Furthermore, in all cases where the rate paid by the consumers is fair to the gas company-considering the value of the service rendered by the gas company-the consumers are entitled to continued service and protection of the investment they have made on the faith that the gas service would be continued in the future.

THE fundamental hydrodynamic principles governing the production of oil from wells have been carefully studied and evaluated by many investigators. These prior studies are quite complete and cover virtually the entire field of oil production and recovery.1 One of the most impor-tant measurements in production studies is that of the bottom-hole pressure at various rates of production.2 It is the purpose of this paper to outline the technique and economics of fluid-level measurements as applied to pumping wells and to review briefly other methods for obtain-ing bottom-hole data. The applications of bottom-hole pressure or fluid-level measure-ments are based on simple hydrodynamic principles. Under equilib-rium conditions, pbh = hd + pg + pch [ l] when pbh = bottom-hole pressure, lb. per sq. in. absolute, h = height of fluid in well, ft., d = average fluid density, lb. per sq. in. per foot, pg = weight of section of gas column 1 in. square from fluid level to casing head, pch = casing-head pressure, lb. per sq. in. absolute. In words, equation 1 states that the bottom-hole pressure is equal to the weight hd of the column of fluid plus the weight of the column of gas between the fluid and the casing head plus the casing-head pressure. At moderate rates of flow, the rate of production is approximately proportional to the difference between the reservoir, or static bottom-hole, pressure and the flowing or producing pressure; i.e.: Q = c(pr - pbh) [2] pr = the reservoir pressure, c = the constant of proportionality.
