ONE of the problems studied by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Washington has been the re-treatment of table middlings. Hydraulic classification has given the best results. Instead of using the classifier to prepare the feed to the tables, as has been the practise for many years in ore dressing, it is used to separate part of a middling product that cannot be re-treated successfully on the table. Middlings are desirable in a table plant because the separation according to specific gravity is incomplete; that is, in the products of the table there is always an overlapping of free particles of coal and refuse that can be distinguished with heavy liquids such as are used in the float-and-sink test. The causes of this overlapping may be divided into two groups, those outside the table separation itself and those inherent in the table separation. The first of these groups includes, among other causes, the following: (1) poor adjustments of the table, (2) overloading or underloading the table, (3) irregularities in the quantity and quality of the feed, (4) irregularities in the power and water supply, and (5) a vertical danc-ing motion of the table deck due to weak foundations. These causes of overlapping are largely unnecessary in a properly designed and constructed plant; but whenever they are present they materially affect the character of the middling product, and hence the problem of re-treatment. The other group includes three additional causes: (6) small differences in specific gravity between coal and impurities, (7) a size-specific-gravity relationship of the coal and refuse particles in the table feed such that the sizing action of the table opposes the separation according to the specific gravity, and (8) shapes of particles that prevent a separation. The sixth, small differences in specific gravity, may be a very important reason for an incomplete separation. The change in specific gravity from coal to shale is always gradual and the designation of one part as coal and another part as refuse is arbitrary. Fourteen years ago, J. B. Warriner presented before the Institute a paper on anthracite stripping,' describing the progress of stripping in the Anthracite Region from its beginning with an old quarry stripping at Summit Hill, which was operated more than a century ago, through various types of strippings used in 1917. This paper will briefly review the status of anthracite stripping methods from 1917 to the present day and describe in detail the stripping operation of The Hudson Coal CO. at Clinton collicry. It is not intended as a review of the work in the district—that would require a much longer paper. History and Statistics Mr. Warriner said, in part: "The sizes of shovels have gradually increased until now 70 and 80-ton shovels are the rule and larger equipment is coming in." He also referred to a large electrically operated dragline which weighed about 225 tons and had an operating radius of 125 ft. In 1917, a number of strippings used shovels of various sizes, ranging up to the 60 Marion and Bucyrus 70-C railroad type. Material was hauled away in narrow-gage side dumpers, usually of 4 or 5 cu. yd. capacities. Star-type churn drills with 4-in. bits were generally used for drilling purposes. Since 1917 wages in the anthracite field; have increased, but the higher operating costs of strippings are now being successfully combated by continuous improvements in stripping equipment, such as the development of the caterpillar or crawler shovels, the use of larger cars, better drilling equipment, the introduction of shovels of increased capacity and the adoption, in a number of instances, of standard-gage equipment for transportation. In 1918 another large dragline was introduced in the southern fields, which had been in service in the Middle West and is in use today, dipping vertically about 180 ft. to raise coal out of a stripping. About 1918, small shovels with caterpillar traction were introduced. In 1922 the 6-in. well drills began replacing the 4-in. drills, with an attendant saving to the operators. About the same time A. Coal mine bumps are a serious hazard to life and property in the mines of east-central Utah. Research into geologic factors associated with these bumps indicates that the bumps are spatially and genetically related to structural and stratigraphic features. Some bumps are directly related to stress accumulation along faults, either from natural causes or as a result of mining. Frictional properties of bedding planes between coal and roof rock, and between some rock units within the roof, directly affect the deformation of coal ribs, and hence the incidence of bumps. These frictional properties are related to the lithology of the roof rocks as well as to the sedimentary structures within the rocks. Commonly a sequence consisting of 1/3 ft of carbonaceous silt-stone, about 2/3 ft of rider coal, and several ft of massive siltstone or sandstone overlies the main seam. The sequence causes difficult roof conditions in the mines, difficult mining conditions and, directly or indirectly, many bumps. The U. S. Geological Survey has studied the relationships between geological features and coal mine bumps at Sunnyside, Utah, for about six years. IN 1923, Oklahoma took second place as an oil-producing state; whereas in 1922 it was the leader. California surpassed it, in 1923, by nearly 100,000,000 bbl. In 1923, Oklahoma produced, according to statistics of The Oil & Gas Journal, 165,013,685 bbl., or an increase of approximately 10 per cent. over the preceding year; the increase in California was approximately 90 per cent. The number of wells drilled in Oklahoma and the results of the two years are contrasted in the following table from data published in a preliminary bulletin by the U. S. Geological Survey. 1922 1923 Oil wells 4,149,68%. 3,515, 60% Gas wells 571, 9 %u 587, 11% Dry holes 1,428,23% 1,731,29% Total wells 6,148 5,833 The initial production from wells drilled in Oklahoma in 1923, according to The Oil & Gas Journal, was the largest in the history of the state, being 1,277,936 bbl. It has been 32 years since oil development began in the state, last year being the largest in the amount of production. The production of the past year would have been considerably greater were it not for the shutdown order in the Burbank field and curtailment of production in the Hewitt and Tonkawa pools.

The control of zinc flotation at Outokumpu Oy's Pyhasalmi and Vihanti mines is described. At Pyhäsalmi the zinc flotation circuit is partially open. Zinc and other metal assays of pulp flows are measured and direct assay control of concentrates in various flotation steps is adopted. Assay control is carried out by adjusting flotation air and pulp levels. Optimization with copper sulphate ensures high Zn- recovery and minimum copper sulphate consumption. A froth depth monitor is used to measure froth quality. At Vihanti the zinc flotation takes place in closed circuit. The most important control loop is the Zn-assay control of rougher concentrate by adjusting flotation air. The quality of froth is measured indirectly and thus copper sulphate consumption is altered. The circulating load is controlled also by flotation air in the three cleaning steps. The comparison of the control strategies shows that a more sophisticated control is adopted at Pyhäsalmi because the selective flotation of this massive sulphide ore is considered to be difficult. The control strategy includes numerous tests performed by the computer and control algorithms developed for the case. The control targets of the two zinc flotations described are also different: At Pyhäsalmi Zn-assay control of final concentrate including copper sulphate optimizing, at Vihanti the control of circulating load and Zn-assay of rougher concentrate.

It is now well established, chiefly through the work of Davenport and Bain,' that the influence of temperature upon the rate of transformation of austenite to ferrite at constant temperature is represented by a curve of the type shown in Fig. 5 on page 295 and the reasons for this general shape have been discussed by them in a qualitative way. Thus, the upper part, or nose, of the curve is the resultant of two factors of which the rate of change with temperature is not the same, and by analogy with other like cases it is almost certain that these factors are: (1) the chemical potential, or driving force, of the transformation, which is zero at the equilibrium temperature and increases rapidly as the temperature falls below this point; and (2) a factor analogous to viscosity, or resistance of the crystal lattice to a change in structure, which also increases as the temperature is lowered. Just below the equilibrium temperature this virtual "viscosity" of the metal is relatively low—that is, the metal offers little resistance to a change in lattice—but the driving force is also small, and the net result is that the reaction proceeds slowly. As the temperature is lowered the magnitude of both factors increases; but at first the driving force increases more rapidly than the resistance and the reaction is observed to proceed more rapidly. At lower temperatures, however, the resistance begins to increase faster than the driving force, and eventually, at the nose of the curve, overbalances it, causing the reaction to proceed more and more slowly thereafter. This concept is somewhat, though not completely, analogous to that employed in certain electrical cases where the precise factors are known and are separately measurable. The current I (in amperes or coulombs per second) flowing through a given wire is proportional to the impressed potential, or driving force E, and is inversely proportional to the resistance R of the wire; that is, I = E/R. Stated in a slightly different way, the time required for one coulomb to pass a given point (1/I) is equal to R/E. If the temperature of the whole circuit is changed, the resultant change in 1/I will depend on the relative rates of change of R and of E,

While working, during the summer of 1877, upon the "Chemical composition and Physical Properties of Steel Rails," the results of which are given in my report with this title, I was struck with the surprising wear which some of the rails, which would ordinarily be called soft rails, had endured. At that time I knew of no chemical measure of softness except low carbon, and I found that a numher of rails with low carbon had endured as high or higher tonnage, with apparently as little loss of metal by wear, as those with higher carbon. My own work on steel rails that summer did not embrace any definite experiments as to the amount of metal worn off the rail per million tons which had passed aver it; and so I could get no more definite answer from that work, to the question at the head of this paper, than was given by comparing the appearance of the worn section of the rail with its tonnage. This comparison, however, served to arouse in my mind the query, whether the commonly received opinion as to the relation between the hardness and wearing power of steel is correct, as applied to steel rails. This opinion, if I am right, is: the harder the steel, the better will be the wear, and the limit of hardness is simply one of safety; hard, brittle steel being, of course, more liable to break than soft, tough steel. The query, although aroused, did not bear any immediate fruit, and, as will be evident to any one reading it, the report above referred to was written with the commonly received opinion in mind. Since that time I hare collected a little information upon this subject, which I should be glad to submit to the Institute, if for no other purpose, for the sake of arousing attention, and directing study to the question of hardness versus wear in steel rails. Before making known this information, howevcr, permit me a few words in reference to hardness. How shall we measure the hardness of steel ? Of the various ways of getting indications as to the hardness of steel, which are known, three mill serve our present purpose. These are: 1st. High carbon. The self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumbergerl and R. C. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an Ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.' Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. The following study endeavors to enlarge upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. The Spontaneous Polarization Field Set Up by an Ore Body If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth,s surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources Q1 and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

OIL quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State `A'-Vapor Blanket Cooling-In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage `B'-Vapor Transport Cooling- Termination of the `A' stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage `C'-Liquid Cooling--The `B' stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the `B' stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage `B' because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 2 ½ -in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and 1-in. stream height, and (2) a ½ -in. orifice and a 3 ½ -in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was ½ -in. above the orifice. The steel used was an NE 9450 having the following analysis: [ ] Some tests were run on an NE 8740, 3312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been omitted' from this paper. The test bars were machined from 1 1/8 -in. stock to 1-in. diam by 4 in. long.

THE present list of problems relating to the physical chemistry of steelmaking has been prepared by the Committee on the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, from answers to a questionnaire Submitted to a number of metallurgists engaged in both industrial and educational work throughout the United States. The purpose of the project is to make available to research laboratories a list of problems, all reduced to their simplest terms, the solution of which would aid in creating a better understanding of the steelmaking process. It is not intended to restrict the problems to practical steelmaking. The list also includes the study of the properties, and their correlation, as well as the physical and chemical reactions, of all Substances that occur or that may be in any way associated with steelmaking operations, Such as metallic substances, refractories, nonmetallic inclusions, and the constituents of slags. Many of the problems can be carried out in university or other research laboratories. Others may be most successfully attacked by cooperation of the research men with the operating personnel. It is the Committee's earnest wish that this cooperation be fostered. It is requested that investigators who are working on any of the problems listed and who anticipate future publication of their results, notify the Secretary of the Committee that such investigation is in progress. Suggested additions to the present list are also requested. The Committee is undertaking to act as a clearing house for information regarding the topics in this field that are being actually studied. Interested persons are invited to correspond with the Secretary. I. Data involved in the state of equilibrium for the various systems (laboratory work, almost entirely). A. THE chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 c.c. of a solution containing 495 mg. of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative proof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type [R+ + Y- + MX =± RX + M+ + Y¬] where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the massaction and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or Y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (1) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (2) the contact angles1 of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. Discussion of the paper of E. C. HARDER, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2573 to 2586. I. C. WHITE, Morgantown, W. Va.-I have seen some of the great iron-ore deposits described in this paper. -One of these in the State of Minas Geraes appears to be an immense mountain of iron ore about 2,000 ft. in height. All over its surface from bottom to top may be seen large masses of rich iron ore, varying in weight from a few pounds to several tons, and from all that one can judge without exploitation, the quantity of available ore is certainly very large in this particular mountain. Whether it will prove a mere surface deposit or shell, like the famous Iron Mountain of Missouri, is for future exploration to determine. The question of transportation is the main factor in determining the availability for exportation of these Brazilian iron ores. There is no coal in Brazil that can be manufactured into coke without expensive previous treatment, since the best of the raw coal in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, and Parana, contains about 35 per cent. of ash, of which about 6 per cent. is sulphur, and coal of this composition cannot be utilized in iron smelting without purification. When I was chief of the Brazilian Coal Commission in 1904 to 1906, I had a cargo of this coal shipped to Balk, Germany, and treated in the great coal-testing plant of the Humboldt Engineering Works, located just across the Rhine from Cologne. It was found that by crushing and washing the Brazilian coal, it yielded 33 per cent. of briquetting coal, containing only 10 to 12 per cent. of ash (of which 1 per cent. was sulphur), and 42 per cent. of slack coal, with 25 per cent. of ash and low in sulphur, so that about 33 per cent. of the Brazilian coal could be converted into coke of fair quality, as shown by the following average of three analyses, using air-dried coal, of briquets made from the Barro Branco coal bed, State of Santa Catharina: Moisture 1.56 Volatile matter 31.66 Fixed carbon 56.73 Ash : 10.05 Total 100.00 Sulphur 1.34 Phosphorus 0.003 B.t.u 13,395

At lower temperatures, however, the resistance begins to increase faster than the driving force, and eventually, at the nose of the curve, overbalances it, causing the reaction to proceed more and more slowly thereafter. This concept is somewhat, though not completely, analogous to that employed in certain electrical cases where the precise factors are known and are separately measurable. The current I (in amperes or coulombs per second) flowing through a given wire is proportional to the impressed potential, or driving force E, and is inversely proportional to the resistance R of the wire; that is, I = E/R. Stated in a slightly different way, the time required for one coulomb to pass a given point (1/I) is equal to R/E. If the temperature of the whole circuit is changed, the resultant change in 1/I will depend on the relative rates of change of R and of E,

INTRODUCTION. IN India the production of mica, which in other countries is of very minor importance, is one of the staple, long established industries, and ranks high in the statistics of mineral products. Nearly two-thirds of the mica of commerce comes from India. The Indians have used mica for glazing and decorative purposes through many centuries. About 14,000 men are employed in and about the mines, and the indigenous and primitive mode of mining is still followed; but, by reason of the exhaustion of the surface supply hitherto won without intelligence or capital, it will not be many years before the present interesting and casual methods will be replaced by a less archaic and more profitable system. India on the whole has little mineral wealth, but the unique resources of its mica fields, cheap labor, and favorable natural conditions render it unlikely that any other country can ever more than temporarily contest her leadership in the production of this one minor but essential mineral. Mica plays a small but indispensable role in a variety of fields of dissimilar application. Its use and value depend upon characteristics which different kinds of mica have in varying degrees, each kind being adapted to 'its own special purpose. Its well-known characteristics of transparency, flexibility, elasticity, toughness, high dialectric, strength, perfect flatness; ease of splitting into thin films, ability to stand high heat and sudden changes in temperature, give it value in many industries. No other substance, natural or artificial, has this combination of qualities. The oldest use of mica is in glazing. By reason of the improvements in annealing glass, this is not now of great importance, but mica is still employed for the covers of ikon images in Russian churches, the windows of anthracite stoves, compass

THE data recently published1-" on heat treatment of titanium alloys have not been readily systematized into an overall picture. When the ß titanium phase transforms isothermally at low temperatures, the hardness follows a typical age-hardening pattern, going through a peak as schematized by the "hardness" vs "time of isothermal transformation" coordinates of Fig. 1. As the temperature is raised, the peak will decrease in height and occur at shorter times; slowing must however take place as the /3 transus is approached. The brittle microconstituent in the region of peak hardness has been termed /3'. Its structure is still undetermined but it is clearly a transition stage from soft /3 to the £ + a that is found at the right of the peak. On continuous cooling, high cooling rates correspond to short times on Fig. 1; abscissa labeling has been added accordingly. Extremely rapid cooling will retain soft /3; very slow cooling will precipitate soft a; intermediate rates give hard 8'. Increasing distance from the water-quenched end of a Jominy hardenability bar corresponds to slower cooling (right on Fig. I), but the range of cooling rates covered by a Jominy bar is only a small portion of that shown in the figure. The p-stabilizing alloying elements retard the transformation process, moving the material to the left on Fig. 1. A lean alloy is harder water-quenched (P') than air-cooled (/3 +a); a rich alloy is harder air-cooled (/3') than water-quenched (/3). Examples of the position of various compositions with respect to the curve, based on limited data in the literature, are given at the top of the figure. Oxygen and carbon accelerate the transformation process, moving the material to the right on Fig. 1. If an alloy quenched quickly enough to retain soft /3 is reheated below the £ transus (tempered), it ages, going through a hardness maximum as time increases (moving right on Fig. 1). Material which after cooling from the /3 range lies on or right of the hardness peak, will move still further right on tempering, and so soften. Since the rate of the tempering (aging) reaction increases with temperature, the figure also may be used to represent the variation in properties with tempering temperature, at short tempering times. The simple picture given here neglects martensite transformation, as well as differences between decomposition products of /3 formed by direct isothermal transformation and those formed by quenching and tempering. It may nevertheless be of use as a guide for practical heat treatment and for further research.

Tars paper states the theory underlying the design of two kinds of dimensionally scaled models of parts of idealized oil fields. One of these simulates an oil well and its surrounding sand for a distance of 16 ft. radially from the well. The other model simulates linear flow through layered sands. Construction and operation of the models are described and typical data are given. The unique features in the design of the models are: (I) the treatment of the permeability-viscosity quotient as a single variable and (2) the use of previously reported experimentally developed relations between relative permeability and saturation and capillary pressure, saturation, porosity, perm ability and interfacial tension. The models at present simulate flow of oil and water only, through unconsolidated sands. They are superior to unscaled models, which may give rise to erroneous conclusions. The models are designed to study the desirability of various methods of sell completion and the effects of various factors on recovery of oil from layered sands.

AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal ribs and movement of the roof and pavement.
