The industrial importance of the sillimanite group of minerals depends upon the beneficial properties exhibited by porcelains and refractories in which substantial amounts of these minerals are utilized as raw materials. The presence of "sillimanite" (now known to be the closely related mineral, mullite) in conventional porcelains and refractories has been known since before the turn of the century. As early as 1906 German investigators observed a direct correlation between the "sillimanite" content of a porcelain and its electrical and mechanical properties. Acting upon this discovery, U. S. Bureau of Standards investigators during World War I developed improved pyrometer tubes and spark plug porcelains, by increasing substantially the amount of "sillimanite" at the expense of quartz. The success of these experiments, first reported in 1918, at once aroused a lively interest in the location of natural sources of sillimanite and its related minerals. As a result of diligent search, the large andalusite deposits in California were discovered in 1919. Within the next several years large deposits of kyanite and sillimanite in India and kyanite in the United States had been reported. The search for these minerals in quantity, by both private and governmental agencies, has continued unabated during the ensuing forty years. A number of domestic deposits of kyanite have been worked during the past 30 years. Of these, only the Virginian and South Carolinian deposits are currently in substantial production. The only commercial andalusite production in the United States has been in California and Nevada. A dumortierite deposit in Nevada, known since 1917 but ignored for want of a commercial use, began production in 1925. A topaz occurrence in South Carolina has yielded a small production since about 1940. Domestic production of andalusite, dumortierite and topaz had virtually ceased by 1950. There has never been any commercial development of domestic sillimanite deposits. Kyanite has been mined almost continuously in India since about 1922. The remoteness of the large deposits of Indian sillimanite had caused it to be neglected until 1949. In that year sillimanite production began, and it has continued to the present. South African andalusite has been marketed from the 1930's until the present time. From 1944 to 1955 Kenya, British East Africa, was an important producer of kyanite. Commercial deposits of kyanite in Ontario, Canada should soon be in production. The first production of kyanite in Europe began in Austria in 1953. No commercial deposits of mullite are known anywhere in the world. It is of interest to note that synthetic mullite, which as "sillimanite" first elicited interest in the A12O3-rich aluminosilicate refractories, has enjoyed a marked increase in production in recent years. This is a result of the gradual depletion of known deposits of high-quality kyanite and related minerals."' This paper concerns the magnitude of the amount of supersaturation that occurs in an underground reservoir during the flow of oil and gas to wells and to the amount of undersaturation that occurs during repres-suring of an oil reservoir where some effective permeability to gas exists. The study is based on earlier laboratory findings of other investigators on the rate of diffusion of gas in oil as a function of the depth of oil. Utilizing these relationships and the principles of reservoir mechanics, a quantitative estimate of undersaturation and super-saturation was calculated. The results showed that the diffusion of the gas is rapid enough that for all practical purposes no supersaturation exists during the flow of oil to wells or undersaturation during repressuring in reservoir sands having some effective permeability to gas. The reason diffusion of the gas virtually keeps the oil saturated is the long time required in radial flow for oil to reach the well and the slow rate at which pressure in reservoirs is increased during repressuring. INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the phase relationships during flow of gas and oil in an underground reservoir is essential to operating the reservoir in the most efficient manner. In material-balance calculations and in fluid-flow studies, the oil is assumed to contain all the gas that it will dissolve at given temperature and pressure. Pressure-volume-temperature relationships are normally obtained in the laboratory using "bottom-hole" or combined samples of the reservoir fluids. In such laboratory determinations equilibrium is obtained between the oil and gas in the pressure cells by mechanical agitation. During the flow of oil and gas in reservoirs, however, no comparable agitation occurs to mix thoroughly these fluids to aid in effecting equilibrium between the two phases. During repressuring of a partly depleted underground reservoir, the gas is usually injected into the reservoir faster than the oil can absorb it; consequently, the oil is undersaturated. On the other hand, as the oil flows through the reservoir to the wells during producing operations the pressure decreases faster than the gas in solution can diffuse through the oil to the gas phase. The oil therefore is supersaturated with gas. Where the oil is undersaturated, gas diffuses away from the gas-oil interface, and where it is supersaturated the gas diffuses toward the interface. In either case the gas moves from a higher to a lower saturation. This report contains the results of a study of the factors influencing the degree of nonequilibrium of the phase relations of oil and gas in porous mediums during the flow of oil through reservoirs to wells and also during the injection of gas into partially depleted sands. Data from an underground reservoir are presented and the degree of supersaturation during the flow of the oil through the reservoir to the well is approximated. Also data from another reservoir are used and the degree of undersaturation during the repressuring operation is calculated. In addition, the flow rates of oil in laboratory experiments and in underground reservoirs are compared, as data from the laboratory are often used to interpret events in the reservoir, and the rates of flow influence appreciably the degree of nonequilibrium. Much of the contents of this report was prepared in 1943; but, because of other activities during and since the war, the manuscript was left untouched until 1952, when it was decided to include an estimate of the amount of undersaturation during repressuring as well as supersaturation during flow.

Both the abnormal resistivity exhibited by shaly reservoir materials and their potential are due to adsorption of ions. Interrelationships between the two have been derived and verified by laboratory results. These relations which have resulted from this work may be used in a qualitative manner to estimate whether or not a particular shaly reservoir contains hydrocarbons, and also to estimate the porosity of shaly sands. INTRODUCTION In spite of the progress which has been made in the last decade toward a better understanding and utilization of the electric log, there remain a number of problems in the interpretation of the log. One of these which is often troublesome is that of divining the nature of the fluids in sandstones or carbonate rocks which contain appreciable amounts of shale. It was shown by Patnode and Wylliel in 1949 that shaly rocks exhibit an abnormally low resistivity when saturated with solutions of low ionic concentrations. This phenomenon has been demonstrated to be due to the adsorptive properties of shale or clay in the rock.' In estimating the fluid content of shaly sands or carbonates from the electric log, it is desirable and sometimes necessary to correct for the abnormally low resistivity. A similar correction is likewise often necessary if attempts are made to estimate the porosity of a stratum from resistivity measurements. The correction may be made from data obtained on core samples and from information on salinity of interstitial water. Cores, however, are not always available. Moreover, even if cores are at hand, their examination is time-consuming. It would be most desirable, therefore, to make corrections of this nature from the log itself. Since both the abnormal resistivity and the potential' are consequences of the adsorption of ions on shale, it should be possible to utilize the potential curve to give better interpretation of resistivity data obtained in logging shaly materials. The work described in following sections was directed toward this end. THEORY Relation of Resistivity of Shaly Reservoir Rock to Adsorpttve Properties In discussing the effect which the presence of shale or clay exerts on the resistivity of a reservoir rock, it is convenient to make use of the resistivity factor.4,5 This quantity has been defined as the ratio of the resistivity of the rock when it is completely saturated with an electrolyte to the resistivity of the electrolyte itself. When the rock, such as a clean sand or carbonate, is free of shale the resistivity factor is virtually independent of the ionic concentration of the electrolyte used to saturate the sample, so that F = R0/Rw = constant for a clean rock . . (1) where F is the resistivity factor, R0 is the resistivity of the rock saturated with electrolyte, and Rw is the resistivity of the electrolyte. When the rock contains argillaceous material, the resistivity factor as defined above is no longer independent of the concentration of the electrolyte used to saturate the rock, but decreases as the ionic concentration of the electrolyte decreases. In explanation of this behavior, it is instructive to consider a sample of shaly porous rock placed in contact with a large volume of a dilute electrolyte. The sample is considered to become saturated with the electrolyte, and to attain equilibrium with it. As a result of adsorption by the shale surfaces within the rock, there is a greater concentration of ions in the solution adjacent to the shale particles in the interstices of the sample than there is in the external solution with which the

THE present investigation was undertaken to measure the effects of controlled amounts of oxygen on the deformation parameters of a zirconium single crystals over the temperature range 77" to 950°K and to determine the rate-controlling mechanisms. Although there is no doubt that the mechanical properties of the group IV metals, titanium, zirconium, and hafnium, are strongly influenced by the interstitial impurities oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen, there are many conflicting theories as to the role played by the interstitials during the deformation proess.'- There is general agreement that the mechanisms which control plastic flow in a metal impose characteristic values on such parameters as the flow stress and its temperature dependence, the activation volume, and the activation energies. These parameters will be used to analyze the deformation mechanisms. eltham,' Sargent,16 and ibbs' have shown that the stress relaxation technique allows the activation volume characteristic of the deformation process to be found during the course of a simple tension test. In many cases it is found that the relaxation of stress is logarithmic with time and obeys a relationship of the following form: T-T = AT =S logl0(qt + C) [I] where t, is the shear stress at the start of the relaxation test, t is the shear stress at time t, and S. q, and C are experimental constants, and S is the strain rate sensitivity of the stress t as shown in the appendix. The slope found from a semilogarithmic plot of At vs time is approximately equal to S. The activation volume u, association with the deformation process, is found from the following relationship: The theoretical treatment of thermally activated plastic flow due to schoeck18 shows that the activation volume when combined with the temperature dependence of the flow stress gives the activation energy for the process according to equations: seegerZ3 considers that the flow stress at lower temperatures ld is composed of two parts such that Tapplied = tinternal + Teffective , where Teffective 3 ff , is the stress necessary to overcome the local obstacles to deformation and Tinternal, ri, is the stress necessary to overcome the long-range elastic stress field of dislocations on other planes. ri is considered to be largely elastic in origin and can be estimated from the stress value at the temperature independent portion of the flow stress-temperature curve. EXPERIMENTAL The crystal bar zirconium used in this investigation was supplied by Wah Chang Corp. whose certified analysis gave the following impurity contents in parts per million by weight: oxygen, 150; nitrogen, 10; iron, 180. All others were less than 100 ppm. The oxygen and iron contents were confirmed by neutron activation and chemical analyses, respectively. Single crystals were grown in an electron beam furnace according to the method of Wilson and Pickle-simer'' and ills.'' An experimental investigation of the relative effectiveness of standard bullets and "shaped charges" in perforating dense, hard formations is reported. A method is described which simulates the conditions under which a shot is normally fired. Results are evaluated on the basis of depth of penetration, extent 01 Fracturing. extent and nature of formation damage, and other physical characteristics. INTRODUCTION A study was made of the relative merits of bullets and "shaped charges'' as applied to well completions in hard, dense formations such as those encountered in the Permian Basin. The planning of the laboratory program stipulated that core samples should be prepared and mounted in such a way that perforation shots of either kind"" could be fired into them, keeping the factors pertinent to good shooting practice similar to what they would be in a well. The shooting was done in a buried tank. with the sample and shooting equipment covered with water. The depth of water was calculated to he sufficient to simulate the inertial effects of well fluids for the duration of an explosion (a few micro-seconds). Flow measurements were attempted on the specimens after perforation. Due to the lack of uniformity of the limestone, shale breaks. etc., these measurements proved to be of little value to the study. The mounting materials were removed. so that the character of the penetration. fracturing, etc., could be observed. METHOD Laboratory samples were selected from the hard. dolomitic sand cores from Block 31 Field. Core pieces having a 3 3/4 in. diameter and a useful length of 10 to 12 in. were used. Selection was aimed at those pieces having a minimum of shale streaks and other irregularities. The ends were cut off square Manuscript received in the Petroleum Branch office June 28, 1951. Seven-in. casing was cut in two-ft lengths. of which one end was closed by "orange-peeling" and welding, and the other was threaded to accept a standard bull plug. The bull plugs were fitted with copper tube connections .so that pressure could be applied when the capsules were made up. The cores were mounted in the capsules by means of wire centralizers whose function was to hold the Core in proper position while concrete was poured and set. Those who live in steel-mill towns are so accustomed to the sight of flames spouting from the mouth of a Bessemer vessel that they seldom pause to think of the amazing process behind it. Actually cold air is being blown through a hot liquid and, instead of cooling it, raises the temperature of the liquid. When coffee is too hot to drink, we know that blowing on it will cool it, so it was no wonder that when Henry Bessemer (or William Kelly, as your patriotism chooses) first proposed this cycle of steel production, he was considered mad. When Bessemer and Kelly started their investigations around 1852, there was not much practical knowledge of metallurgy and, in consequence, there was wide variation in the product made by their process. It was appreciated that the silicon, carbon and iron were all potential fuels, but not until Mushet discovered the beneficial effects of having manganese in the pig iron did the process really become commercial. Bessemer's patent of 1855 covered a crucibleful of liquid iron into which a refractory tuyere was lowered and the blow started. Since that time virtually every conceivable form of vessel, bottom arrangemerit, tuyere size and location have been suggested or tried. There have been stationary vessels with fixed bottoms, that were side, top or bottom blown; tilting vessels with two sets of side tuyeres at different elevations; vessels like a three-compartmerit septic tank; vessels of a cylindrical form supported on the long axis with tuyeres along the side submerged by a partial rotation of the vessel (this type continues in copper refineries); portable vessels to make the blow in a ladle over a mold in a foundry; a combination of a cupola and converter in one shell, and various other arrangements. But in all these experiments, compressed air for the blast was presupposed and there was little discussion of the quantity or quality of the air delivered to the tuyeres. At one time or another various practices that now are forgotten have been tried or suggested: for instance, the use of inert gas at the end of the blow; the addition of fuel to the blast; the use of hot-blast stoves; the drying of the air to a minimum moisture in the blast. Except in the last-named method little attention was paid to the quality or quantity of the air blown. Phases Of the many Papers published On various phases of the Bessemer process, nearly '7' according to one bibliography, Over go per 'ent were concerned with the metallurgical phase and less than '0 per cent discussed various sections of the pneumatic phase. Since the two phases are coincidental, apparently nine times as much thought has been given to the result as has been given to One of the causes of the Bessemer process. The Nb-N constitution diagvam has been examined from 1100° to 1450°C at 1 atm N2 pressure. On the basis of- our work plus that of Brauer and coworkers the stable nitvide Phases are: a) a solid solutlion, basic niobium (bcc) with nitrogen contained interstitially; NbN,, x = <0.40; b) ß NhNx,x = 0.39 to 0.45; hexagonal (W2C type) (NbzN); a =3.058A,c = 4.961 + 0.001A c) y NbNx x = 0.75 to 0.80; tetragonal (distorted NaCl type) (Nb4N3); a = 4.386A,c = 4.332 + 0.001A; d) 6 NbN,, x = 0.88 to 0.91; cubic (NaCl type); a = 4.3885 + 0.0007A; e) E NbNx x = 0.92 to 1.00; hexagonal (Tip type); a = 2.958A, c = 11.272 * 0.0015A. In addition, a metastuble transition phase 6&apos; has been observed and occurs only during the transition 6 — E. 6&apos; NbN has these distinguishing parameters: NbNx,x = 0.96; hexagonal (anti-NiAs type); a = 2.94A, c = 5 .46A. The high-temperature phase fields in the system are governed by two reactions: a) 6 + Y + E, a entectoid reaction occurring at 1270" ± 20° C; b) o + N2 = E, a 2 012 1 reaction occurring at 1370" ± 20° C. As part of a study of the electronic low-temperature. properties of transition metal nitrides, a number of specimens of niobium nitride were prepared. Preliminary observations on these specimens showed several points of disagreement with data already in the literature. It was, therefore, decided to determine the constitution diagram for the Nb-N system between 1100" and 1450°C. The objective of this research was to define the temperature and composition regions of stability of the various phases and to explain the differences among previously proposed diagrams. Review of Previous Literature. The research on the Nb-N system to 1964 has been summarized by storms.&apos; Although he does not present a phase diagram, his review covers the research on the system thoroughly. One of the earliest works on NbN is that of Ascher-mann and coworkers2 who studied the superconductivity of the cubic 6 NbN. Subsequent work by Horn and ziegler,3 Cook, Zemansky, and Boorse,1 Rögener:5 Schroder6 and sellmaier7 has qualitatively confirmed the first results on superconductivity, although their methods of preparation differed considerably. The constitution diagrams proposed for the system by Brauer and Esselborn8 and Elliott9 are shown in Fig. l(a)and (b). The diagram in l(a) has been modified by more recent results in Brauer&apos;s laboratory (private communication). Although 6&apos; is shown on this diagram, Brauer has indicated that he now believes 6&apos; to be a metastable phase in the temperature range shown. The diagram of Elliott, Fig. l(b), is based primarily on the results of Elliott and Komjathy10 on ni-trided niobium strip or rod specimens examined by X-ray diffraction and metallography. The Cu-Sn-As systeM was studied in the region near the Cu-42 and (214-As binary diagrams, where reactions in the solid state appear, resulting from the decomposition of the y(Cu-Sn) phase and from the formation of the 7 phase (Cu,As). The techniques used were microscopic observation, thermal analysis by dilatometry, and X-vay diffraction. The formation of the 7 phase gives rise to a ternavy pevitectoid veaction; the decomposition of the y phase gives rise to five transitional reactions. The temperatures of almost all these reactions could be determined; in the most favorable cases , the accuracy of this determination was of 11.5-C. The 7 phase is stabilized by tin additions, the arsenic atoms being replaced by tin atoms up to 35 pct; this has allowed the preparation of pure j) phase and the confirmation, by extrapolation, of the conrposition of this compound in the Cu-As diagram. In the first part of this work, the solidification reactions in the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram were studied. In the copper corner, the structure of the alloys presented the evidence of reactions in the solid state: on the one hand, all the alloys containing the y phase of the Cu-Sn diagram showed, under the microscope, that this phase had formed different decomposition products after complete solidification; on the other hand, the appearance of the 7 phase of the Cu-As diagram necessitated the introduction of a peritectoid formation reaction. The study of the decomposition of the y phase has been done by preparing about forty alloys that were homogeneous y at high temperature. The formation of the 7 phase has been studied by means of a few alloys with a composition near the homogeneity field of this phase at room temperature. The part of the Cu-Sn phase diagram of interest for this study is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this paper; it is drawn after Hansen and Anderko.&apos; The Cu-As diagram has already been presented in Part I of this work; the significant features of this study are the existence of the arsenides CusAs and Cu5Asz, and the formation of a compound CUEAS, designated as the 7 phase, by a peritectoid reaction at about 325°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The fundamental technique for the investigation of this part of the Cu-Sn-As constitution diagram was microscopic observation; the greatest part of the observed alloys has also been subjected to thermal analysis by dilatometry; a few selected alloys have then undergone an X-ray analysis by powder diffraction. Alloy Preparation. The alloys were prepared from the same products as in Part I of this study: cathode copper, arsenic with a purity better than 99.5, and tin with a purity of 99.98. This paper reports on the results of a fundamental investigation of the behavior of rock under impact of a chisel-shaped bit. Drop-tester studies were conducted with strain gauges attached to the rock and striking bit-edge. It was established that rock behaves viscoelastically. Little correlation was found to exist between the strain waveforms detected on the rock surface and in the bit; thus, strain-time curves obtained with transducers mounted on the bit cannot be used to explain the sequence of events in rock breakage. It is estimated that nearly 1 per cent of the total energy of the blow is expended in permanent deformation of the rock. The strain- energy distribution on a rock surface as a result of chisel impact, which follows a simple law, is presented graphically. Experiments also were conducted with gauges embedded in the rock vertically below the line of impact and at an angle of approximately 45&apos; to the vertical. No essential difference was observed in the type of wave obtained with embedded gauges and with gauges on the surface, as may have been anticipated from theory. INTRODUCTION Through the ages great strides have been taken towards improvement of the various techniques applied in the breakage of rock. Indeed, numerous applications of the rock-failure process are an integral part of present-day industry, including oil well drilling. Yet, astonishingly, little is known regarding the behavior of rock under dynamic loading or the mechanism of rock failure. The value of impact loading studies from the point of view of drilling is evident, however, and requires little elaboration because impact of a chisel edge on rock forms the basic action constituting most common methods of drilling. RELATED STUDIES Impact studies of communition and fragmentation conducted by Fahrenwald, et a1,8 Poncelet,l7 Axelson, et a1,2 Piret,16 Hartman and pfleider,ll Charles and deBruyn,5 and others have been of considerable help in understanding rock-breakage phenomena. Further insight into the basic action of drilling and penetration has been obtained by the work of Irving,13 Cherkasov and Shlyapin,6 BOrcherdt,3 Shepherd,19 Shreiner and Pavlova,20 Drilling Research Inc.7 Hartman,10 Appl and Gatley1 and several other investigators. However, knowledge concerning the stresses and strains induced in the rock and bit during impact remains scant. Recent photoelastic studies by Tandanand and Hartman (1961. 1962)22, 23 have shed light on stress distributions and Fracturing produced in plastics by chisel-shaped bits. In the field of transient strain Pulses and their role in rock drilling, the only extensive work has been performed by Drilling Research Inc. (DRI). They attached strain gauges to the shank of a bit and conducted drop-tester studies, using a die-shaped bit to obtain force-time diagrams. Their work led to the conclusion that, for a given rock type, the first peak of force occurs at a fixed level regardless of the total energy in the system, provided it exceeds a certain minimum threshold level. Further, on this basis an explanation was offered for the sequence of events in crater formation as the result of a single blow on rock. PURPOSE OF PRESENT STUDY The investigations reported in this paper were conducted in a manner similar to the DRI approach, but with the objective of determining the strain distribution in the rock around the area of bit impact and, to a limited extent, the strain in the chisel-shaped bit itself. Of the 61 dikes examined some yielded cassiterite, tantalite, and beryl; eight contained spodumene; and six carried amblygonite. Two mines stockpiled spodumene as a byproduct. Only zoned pegmatite dikes carried lithium minerals. GEOLOGICAL studies have revealed the occurrence of hundreds of pegmatite dikes in northeast Brazil, Fig. I, in the three states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, and Ceara. Heretofore data have not been available on the possible production of lithium minerals from these areas, and in March, April, and May 1953 the author undertook a reconnaissance survey covering a cross-section of the pegmatite~. Sixty-one pegmatites were examined. The pegmatites of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba are located in an arid region (Seratao), and except in the most southerly portion there is a minimum of vegetation and overburden. The region is easily prospected and relatively accessible by jeep or truck. The pegmatites examined in Ceara are in an area of lush vegetation along the flanks of the Jaqueribe River valley. It is therefore more difficult to prospect, and the dirt roads, as a means of access, leave much to be desired. For all practical purposes rail transportation, except in Ceara, is not available. The rocks of the area are composed of Pre-Cambrian schist, gneiss, quartzite, and marbles. They have been intruded by granites, monzonites, and diorites and cut by quartz veins and pegmatites. Pre-Cretaceous erosion reduced the area to a peneplain upon which Cretaceous or younger sandstones were deposited. Recent erosion has left only a few remnants of these younger rocks. In most of the Rio Grande do Norte-Paraiba area the pegmatites were more resistant to erosion than the enclosing schists and therefore stand out in relief. This is not true in the rolling country of Ceara, where the pegmatites lack topographic expression. With regard to structure and lithology, the pegmatite~ of northeast Brazil are divided into two types, uniform and zoned. Of the 61 examined, 19 belong to the uniform and 42 to the zoned type. Uniform pegmatites are normally long, narrow, and tabular, with sharp contacts. They are composed of an intimate mixture of feldspar (microcline or ortho-clase), mica (biotite, phlogopite, or muscovite), and quartz. The grain size5 varies from fine at the contact to coarser in the interior. They are not considered a commercial source of pegmatite minerals, although efforts have been made to produce green beryl of gem variety. This type of dike is often abundant in schists and gneisses close to granite intrusives. The productive dikes — lenticular, pod-shaped, or irregular in outline, with sharp contacts — are of the zoned variety. Zone contacts are gradational, except for those with the quartz core. Zones re identified as follows, see also Fig. 3. Border Zone: This outer zone, in contact with the country rock, is composed chiefly of fine-grained muscovite and biotite, with lesser quantities of finegrained microline and quartz. It is the narrowest zone, usually measurable in inches. Wall Zone: Lying between the border and intermediate zones, the wall zone is composed of medium-grained feldspar (often microcline), muscovite, and quartz. Usually it is the widest zone. Widths of 50 ft were noted. Intermediate Zone: Lying between the wall zone and core, the intermediate zone is composed principally of coarse-grained microcline (occasionally with some orthoclase and albite). It may also carry minor amounts of coarse-grained quartz and fine to medium-grained mica. The width varies from less than 3 ft to more than 30 ft. Core: The center of the dike is composed almost entirely of massive quartz, occasionally with minor amounts of fine-grained muscovite. The width reaches 30 ft. Herty, Jr.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.—The procedure of the Open-hearth Committee in studying pig iron and its effects in the open hearth has been influenced by the discussions at a number of meetings of the Committee. Those discussions have brought out very clearly that, as far as the pig iron affects the quality, interference with quality should be studied for three definite types of pig iron: (1) low-silicon pig iron; (2) very high-silicon pig iron, and (3) pig iron in which the silicon varies over a wide range in short periods, such as 1 to 3 casts. If a blast furnace is running steadily at 1 per cent. silicon iron, practically no trouble, apparently, can be traced to the pig iron, but if the furnace is running from 0.60 up to 1.50 and then down to 0.60 per cent., trouble in the finished steel is liable to occur, which apparently cannot be corrected by open-hearth practice. The open-hearth discussions have shown fairly definitely that with low-silicon iron, one type of trouble arises on the finished product and with the high-silicon iron, another. Our experience with the high-silicon is that any non-metallic matter that may form, does so when the pig iron is put into the furnace; that is, silicates immediately form which are more liable to be high in silica than would happen with low-silicon iron. I think Mr. Sweetser will agree with mc that if a blast furnace is very irregular, different points in the furnace may be working irregularly, in other words, the temperature gradient all over the furnace is not uniform. We have made many determinations on that point which indicate that a varying blast furnace causes hot spots and cold spots around the periphery. If some of those spots are hot and others are cold, although the analysis of the iron may be constant, then unreduced oxide, going through on one side, and good iron, going through on the other, may mix and the average temperature of the iron is not high enough to get completely rid of the oxides. So our method of attack is directly on that point; it is our first objective. Our procedure is to make a number of consecutive tests at a blast furnace, making a detailed study of the blast-furnace operation. We follow the iron through the open-hearth heat, being sure that we know just how much of each kind of iron gets into the open hearth, and take out specified samples at certain times during the process, working on steel where no finishing additions are made in the furnace. We are following one type of iron through the billet mills and into the finished product and are obtaining complete data on open-hearth operation. Besides the ordinary chemical analyses on the samples of slag and metal, we are running samples of the plg iron, the steel in the open hearth and the finished steel, for oxygen and silicates. We are going to find out whether or not oxygen, as silicates or oxides, has some connection with this trouble. If not, we may be able to locate some other factor. I am inclined to think that the silicates are responsible, judging from the indications in some other work that the Bureau of Mines is doing in Pittsburgh. We have laid out a very definite method of testing to which we will adhere at the different plants where we are now working and at others in the future. Our aim is to

Conventional underground mapping methods and diamond drilling are being applied in a study to determine the nature of the copper ore occurrences near the footwall of the Osceola lava flow top, commonly referred to as the Osceola Amygdaloid. The work to date suggests that structures formed by relatively impermeable barriers, created by flowage and injection of still-molten lava from the interior of the flow into the solidified, brecciated crust, acted as the ore receptacles. Ascending hydrothermal fluids traveling near the footwall contact were trapped and confined in these barriers which retarded the direct upward movement of the ore fluids and caused deposition of copper. Oreshoots located near the footwall appear to have been formed spatially independently from the hanging-wall oreshoots by fluids traveling simultaneously, but along different channelways. The barrier concept, as advanced by earlier writers to explain the concentration of the ore-bearing fluids into broad shoots constituting entire ore bodies, is found to be equally as applicable for the localization of smaller oreshoots within the Osceola ore body. Recently, the Calumet Division of Calumet and Hecla, Inc. completed the unwatering of the old mine workings on the Osceola amygdaloid. Two shafts were subsequently reactivated and mining commenced on the Osceola lode after an idle period of over 20 years. Early in 1961, the Calumet and Hecla Geological Dept. was assigned the task of locating additional reserves. Accordingly, an intensive mapping and underground diamond drilling program was initiated. Except for a very few years following the first mining on the amygdaloid, the Osceola lode had never been a high grade producer. It was, therefore, recognized from the onset that a concentrated effort would have to be made by the mining, milling, and geological departments to insure success of the project. Company reports contained many references to ore that had been located near the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid. Information concerning the grade of this ore was meager, but it was known that at least some was very rich. In contrast to ore that occurred near the hanging-wall, however, the footwall copper did not appear to have a systematic distribution and a large amount of poor rock had to be removed in developing this ore. This, of course, resulted in high development costs and discouraged any extensive mining of footwall ore. The possibility of more continuity than had previously been suspected was recognized by other workers, in particular Dr. T. M. Broderick, formerly Chief Geologist of Calumet and Hecla, who suggested attempts be made on a trial basis to follow the footwall contact with the main development drift. As most mining was done on the Osceola lode before a geological department had been established by the company, and almost all of these openings are now caved, very little information concerning the geology of footwall ore was available. It was, therefore, decided that the first step in the exploration program would be to become familiar with footwall ore occurrences by mapping the geology as the openings were driven. It was possible that a mapping program would reveal the features that controlled the localization of the ore. Furthermore, if it could be shown that footwall ore was more continuous, or if its distribution was more systematic than generally believed, it would be possible to produce a high grade ore that could be blended with the lower grade hanging-wall ore. In connection with the geological program, the Michigan College of Mining and Technology Geophysical Dept. under the direction of Professor Lloyal Bacon, is making a geophysical study of the problems of locating footwall ore by electrical methods. GENERAL GEOLOGY OF MICHIGAN NATIVE COPPER DEPOSITS The native copper deposits of Michigan are located in Keweenaw, Houghton, and Ontonagon Counties. Slip-line studies on deformed chromium single cvystals showed the usual bcc behavior. At room temperatuve, cross slip was prevalent—slip was not confined to a given plane, but the slip direction was (111). At -10O0K, slip occuvred on (110) planes, twins on(112) planes, and cleavage on (1001 planes. A single-crystal tensile specimen with an axis close to [011] showed a pronounced yield drop and high strain rate sensitivity which zclere used to derive relevant parame tevs in a dislocation dynamics treatment. Transmission electron microscope studies confirmed the existence of (110) slip planes and showed ecidence of loops punched out by precipitates and of grown-in dislocations promoting tangling. OF recent years experimental studies have been made of the deformation characteristics of single-crystal molybdenum and tungsten, but very little has been published on the behavior of single-crystal chromium. During a study of the mechanical properties of chromium, single-crystal studies were made which have already been partially described.&apos; However, additional information was generated which was not directly relevant to the main theme of Ref. 1, and, therefore, was not reported. In view of the need for complete documentation of deformation modes, the experimental observations made on the deformation of single-crystal chromium are summarized here, together with an electron-microscope study of the associated dislocation structures. It was found that, in terms of the deformation modes, chromium is a conventional bcc metal, showing a very pronounced yield-point phenomenon. Further, it was found that the flow strength of these crystals is very sensitive to the strain rate. Finally, the crystals were observed to contain many unidentified precipitates, which often were associated with prismatic dislocation loops. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Single crystals were grown from rods of wrought chromium by the method of zone annealing. Rods of "1/4in.-diam were supported vertically in an argon atmosphere while an induction coil was moved up the rod at 1 in. per hr. The power was adjusted to just below that required for melting, and the process produced single crystals in about 30 pct of the rods used. The orientations of the crystals, in general, lay near [011] and are summarized in Fig. 1. Before this treatment, the wrought material contained 35 pprn C, 68 ppm O, and 12 ppm N.* An analyzed single crystal *Usual metallic impurities found in iodide chromium are: Al, 5 ppm; Ca, A ppm; Cu, 2 ppm; Fe, 75 ppm; Yg, 0.5 ppm; Yn, < 3 ppm; Mo, < 3 ppm; Ni, 4 ppm; Si, < 20 ppm; Ti, < 1 ppm; V, 4 ppm; Zr, < 3 ppm. contained 10 pprn C, 79 ppm O, and 50 pprn N. Tension and compression specimens were shaped from the crystals by mechanical grinding, followed by the electrolytic removal of about 0.010 in. from the surface in a perchloric/acetic acid bath. All specimens had a gage length of 0.75 in., and tension specimens had a diameter of 0.100 in., while that of the compression samples was 0.200 in. Mechanical tests were carried out at a rate of 1.3 pct per min, and temperatures below 0°C were attained by means of a nitrogen cryostat similar to that of Wessel.2 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Modes of Deformation. In addition to the tensile properties of these crystals, which are described in Ref. 1, deformation markings on the surface were studied. Crystals A and F, Fig. 1, were deformed in tension at 300°K to 10 and 16 pct strain, respectively. The surfaces contained visible slip lines, about 1 C( apart, composed of both straight and wavy segments. They did not define a single plane, and so determination of the slip plane was not possible. In a shock wave compression study of a martensitic Fe-30 pct Ni alloy, Graham, Anderson, and Holland&apos; found a region of unusual compressibility extending from a few kilobars up to about 20 kbars. This region was characterized by a continuously decreasing shock wave velocity with increasing stress. In this note, we report the results of a study initiated to determine the source of this unusual compressibility. In earlier shock-loading experiments on martensitic Fe-30 pct Ni, Loree et a1.&apos; determined that a phase change occurred at about 80 kbars. Subsequently, Bowden and elly found that samples of a similar material shock-loaded at about 100 kbars experienced a martensite-to-austenite transition. Their crystal-lographic analysis showed the transition was a direct reversal of the established martensite system to the austenite phase. The shock loading in the present experiments was accomplished by precisely controlled plane impact between two discs of the sample material. This configuration created a state of uniaxial strain in the two the front of a projectile which was accelerated to various velocities. Planarity between the impacting discs was controlled to 5 x 10-4 rad, and impact velocities were measured to 0.5 pct. From a knowledge of the Hugoniot relationships of the material and the impact velocity, the shock-wave stress can be calculated. Samples were shocked at 18, 50, 70, and 100 kbars. The specimen discs shocked at 18 and 50 kbars were instrumented with quartz gages to observe the stress time profile. A more detailed description of the experiment has been given previously.4 The shock-loaded specimens were recovered intact by decelerating them in a catcher filled with soft wood. Discs of Fe-30 pct Ni nominally 12.7 mm thick and 64 mm in diam were cut from bar stock. Chemical analysis of the material provided the following composition in weight percents: 29.5 Ni, 0.50 Mn, 0.21 Si, and 0.10 C, with traces of Cr, Cu, Mo, Al, and Co. The discs were austenitized at 650° C for 2 hr at a pressure of less than l0-&apos; torr, and furnace-cooled. Martensite was then produced by quenching the discs at -196" and holding 168 hr. The initial martensitic structure formed is shown in Fig. l(a). Typical microstructures of samples shock-loaded at 18 and 100 kbars are shown in Figs. l(b) and l(c). The banded structure with the austenite regions running parallel to the shock propagation direction was characteristic of samples shock-loaded at all stresses. No such banding was found in samples that were not shock-loaded. Comparison of Figs. l(b) and l(c) shows that, although under the optical microscope the two microstructures are quite similar, the martensite plates of the specimen shocked at 100 kbars etched in a distinctly different manner. This unique etching behavior of martensite in samples shock-loaded above the 80 kbar transition point has also been observed by Leslie el al.&apos; These investigators determined from X-ray and electron microscope studies that fcc martensite, similar in appearance to normal bcc martensite, had been formed under shock loading. A quantitative determination of the amount of austenite present after shock loading was made by X-ray techniques. Both the methods of Lindren&apos; and Miller&apos; were utilized. The results are shown in Table I. The error limits are those experimentally observed from two independent analyses of each sample and represent the precision of the experiment. The absolute error, which should be similar for each sample, is believed to be about 10 pct. It is seen that as the shock stress increases the amount of austenite present also increases. On the basis of the X-ray and microscopic observations, we conclude that shock loading below the 80 kbar ersal will initiate a martensitic reversal: the amount of reversal that occurs increases with in-

This information was made available to the AIME Geophysics Unit Committee through the courtesy of Charles L. Elliot, Mining Coordinator for the SEG. The data were compiled from 245 responses to 496 questionnaires mailed (49%). The data for the U.S. are a realistic representation of actual activity, followed by Asia, Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa and Latin America in order of decreasing reliability.

Studies of the transformation of aus-tenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Rain.&apos; Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of aus-tenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. Experimental Procedure Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8 -in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650&apos; to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examinatioll of partially reacted specimens, Thees specimens were approximately 1/2 by 1/4 by 1/8 in. ill size, specimens of the 9 per cent cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr, at 1200°to 1225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 1/2 hr. at 12ooOC. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. So. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed ill Table I.
