StKip of any of the metals used for deep drawing operations occasionally yields cups that are defective because of a rim that varies in height around the cup in a wave-like manner. Some such defects are traceable to tools or other press factors, but when the protuberances formed (usually four in number on brass and other copper alloys) are symmetrically disposed with respect to the rolling direction of the strip, they are invariably attributable to the metal. The effect is known as "earing" and the protuberances are called "ears." Other terms frequently heard are "tips," "scallops," and "corners." It is recognized that the effect is most commonly a result of a directional crystal structure produced by rolling and annealing operations in the manufacture of the metal strip. Numerous papers dealing with various aspects of the earing effect have appeared in the literature, those listed in the references1 being especially interesting and valuable. An investigation of the factors influencing earing of brass cups has been in progress in the laboratories of the American Brass Co. for several years, and it was thought desirable to make some of the results generally available in summarized form. The present paper discusses many factors that do and do not contribute to ear formation. In addition, a section is devoted to methods of minimizing the earing tendency of brass sheet by proper selection of the cold-rolling and annealing schedule by which it is produced. In the space available, it is impossible to quote detailed experimental procedures and numerical results. However, the authors make no statement that they do not believe to be properly substantiated, either by experimental evidence obtained under laboratory conditions or by experience in the actual production of deep-drawing brass in the brass mill. Mechanism of Ear Formation It must be clearly understood that the formation on cups of symmetrical ears, four or more in number, is attributable solely to the strip metal, and results from the strip having different deformation characteristics in different directions. The tools used in the drawing process, or the type and completeness of lubrication of the strip, have nothing to do with the problem of ears, although they do, of course, greatly affect the "drawing quality" of the strip and the general appearance of the cup. A single tip may be drawn up on the rim of a cup because of misalignment of the tools, or because the gauge of metal varies from side to side of the strip. The two-ear form that sometimes appears is also traceable to gauge variations. However, the four-ear and six-ear symmetrical forms that we are concerned with here are caused by factors inherent in the structure of the metal itself.

ROTARY kilns, varying in construction, are used in a variety of processes. Products differ and operating conditions vary according to economic requirements. All of these variables influence the degree of instrumentation and type of control necessary or profitable to install. Products fired in rotary kilns are the results of combined temperature and time treatment and the interrelation of these two factors should be kept constantly in mind in the perusal of this paper. MEASUREMENTS OF KILN TEMPERATURE The securing of proper temperatures within the rotary kiln, either of the charge or of the kiln lining in the high fire zone, are basic objectives of kiln operation; therefore the measurement of these high-temperature conditions merits first consideration. For these measurements, radiation pyrometers, properly designed and protected, have proved adequate, particularly where records or automatic control are desired, while optical pyrometers may serve as portable indicators. Light-sensitive devices or photoelectric cells in this service are capable of producing records as well as certain forms of automatic control. High-temperature measuring devices for rotary-kiln work should have the measuring unit protected from dust, as a continued accumulation of deposit would lower the readings. Fig. I shows a typical application of radiation equipment to a rotary kiln, mounted far enough away from the sighting hole through the kiln hood to be protected from puffs or stingouts and with a sighting tube having a series of settling chambers, to prevent dust from reaching the lens. Although dust conditions inside the kiln itself usually fluctuate considerably and have their effect upon the readings at that moment, such effects are not cumulative and show as a continuous fluctuation in the temperature indicated, provided the radiation unit and recorder are responsive to such slight and rapid temperature fluctuations. The ambient temperature to which a measuring unit is subjected fluctuates from possibly 0° to over 200°F., therefore these changes should have no effect upon the final reading or upon the life of the measuring unit. A very narrow sighting angle is desirable, so that measurement of temperature may be made as far as possible into the high fire zone without effect of the flame temperature. There should be some sighting means on the measuring unit, so that the proper field may be viewed. Measurement of wall temperature taken at a point where the charge has just left the wall is less affected by dusting conditions than when taken elsewhere. Factors Influencing Temperature Table I gives an outline of the factors that produce kiln temperatures and comments on the possibility of measurement and control. This paper gives a brief description of an investigation made several years ago on the diffusion of zinc into copper. The material for that study was furnished in the form of thin copper strips coated with zinc. The result was required rather quickly and at not too great an expense, and especially information was desired as to the rate at which zinc would diffuse from the zinc coating into the copper and the temperature at which the operation should be carried out. A study of the requirements of this problem indicated that the solution might be secured by means of six determinations. This is the smallest number that will give the information desired and, at the same time, furnish checks on the accuracy of the determinations which justify an abbreviated experimental program. This does not count a preliminary test which was designed to give some idea of the correct temperature to use. The minimum number of temperatures that can be used is two. Knowing the rates of diffusion of zinc into copper at two properly chosen temperatures, it is possible to calculate the rate for any other temperature, and also to check the accuracy of the determination by means of the heat of diffusion, which is calculated from the effect of temperature on the rate of diffusion. The minimum number of determinations at any one temperature is three. The amount of diffusion which occurs at a fixed temperature is definitely related to the time of diffusion, so that by determining the amount of diffusion for three different time intervals, this relationship may be established and possibly a check on the accuracy may be secured. This accounts for the six determinations or experiments, and suggests the logical plan of the work. The check used here is not generally applicable to diffusion phenomena, but it seems to hold closely enough for the limited amount of diffusion in this investigation to justify its use. After considerable experience in connection with the magnetic iron-ores at the South, especially in the Cranberry district of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, the writer was led into a thorough investigation of the magnetic separation of iron-ores, and, from this investigation, has gradually been developed a separating machine which it is the purpose of this paper to explain. Numerous United States patents have been issued upon machines for magnetic separation. Since the original patents date back to 1849, it is not possible to-day to establish broad claims upon the principles of electro-magnets as applied in such machines. Among these inventions there are certain types of separators which have very marked practical advantages over the others; and these successful machines, while varying radically from each other in their proportions and arrangements, are all based upon a principle originally explained in a patent which was granted in 1870, and which has now expired by limitation. The problem of practically separating iron-ores, as found in the mines, is very different from the separation of a purely magnetic substance from a purely non-magnetic one, since the crystals of magnetite, scattered through the ore-bearing rock, and sometimes collected in masses, are of very different sizes. The average size of the particles may be definitely ascertained for each mine, and the crushing- and screening-machinery may be adapted thereto, but there will still be a large percentage of very fine crystals which, in the crushing for the average, will not be broken apart from the gangue. If these mixed particles are thrown into the heads they carry gangue with them, and if thrown into the tails they occasion a loss of ironore. There are two methods for preventing such loss. One is, to crush all the material to the size of the finest particles, which means, of course, a large crushing-plant, heavy wear and tear, and excessive cost for repairs, and the production of only a very fine-grained concentrate which our blast-furnace managers, to say the least, do not

The assay or estimation of the total gold content of an ore presents little difficulty, when circumstances permit of securing a thoroughly representative sample. The general practice has been fairly standardized, and such errors as occur in the results obtained are for the most part attributable to the methods of sampling rather than to those of assaying, while duplicate assays made by skilled workers usually agree closely. When it is a question of estimating the "free" or amalgamable gold of an ore, as opposed to the total gold, there is but little uniformity in the methods employed by different workers, and often equally little in the results obtained when duplicate determinations are attempted, no satisfactory standard method having been generally adopted. The methods in use are of two general types—"panning" and "amalgamation." Panning For the estimation of the value of the visible gold by panning or washing, a weighed sample may be taken, ranging from an ounce to several pounds; a kilogram or 2 lb. is a favorite quantity for laboratory tests, while a prospector often uses a full miners' pan, say nearly 20 lb. or 10 kg. In the case of rich quartz, ground to about 30 or 40 mesh, a Mexican horn is convenient, using 1 to 8 02;. of material, and a 6-in. frying pan is favored by many prospectors in dry districts. Bateas, plaques, and dishes of various patterns are used for the same purpose. With these, fairly close results may be obtained by using for ocular comparison standards consisting of weighed amounts of gold of similar character as regards purity, fineness of division, and the general shape of the particles, which standards are preferably obtained from gold of the same locality, or the same deposit, as the ore or gravel being tested. Men working in one particular district sometimes become surprisingly expert in thus judging the value of an ore by the eye, the weights of both ore and gold being guessed. On the other hand, many have been led to overestimate the value of ore and gravel from unfamiliar localities, where the gold has been very finely divided or of unusually high silver content, and a novice may

The desirable high strength and hardness of the heat-treated strong aluminum alloys result from two distinct structural changes: (1) the formation of a solid, solution by heating at the required temperature for a sufficient period, and the substantial retention of this solid solution by rapidly quenching; (2) precipitation of particles of constituent and coalescence to a critical size to produce maximum strength and hardness. In alloys of the duralumin type, that is, alloys containing both copper and magnesium silicide precipitation takes place at normal atmospheric temperature, whereas in alloys containing copper without magnesium silicide or magnesium silicide without copper, maximum properties are obtained only after an accelerated aging treatment consisting of heating for 15 to 20 hr. at temperatures of about 150" C. The mechanical properties of these alloys subsequent to quenching but prior to aging are ideal for forming operations. Unfortunately, however, the alloys of the duralumin type age very rapidly during the first 24 hr. and aging is substantially complete after four days. For severe forming, such as the heading of rivets, it is desirable that this be accomplished within ½ hr. or at the most 2 hr. after quenching. Alloys containing magnesium silicide without copper also age at normal temperatures but the aging is less rapid and the material can be satisfactorily worked within several weeks after quenching. Some slight aging of alloys containing copper alone also takes place at room temperature but it is unimportant from the standpoint of workability. Any method of retarding the aging at room temperature of the duralumin type of alloys would be of considerable advantage in that the period during which the material could be worked successfully would be lengthened. For instance, in aircraft plants it is customary to supply the workmen with small lots of rivets that should be used within ½ hr . after heat treatment. Such procedure has the obvious disadvantage of being uneconomical, and furthermore there is always the possibility that the workmen would use the rivets after the time limit had expired, or the supply being depleted might use some that had not been heat-

THIS paper is not intended as a scientific discussion of the combustion of oil but is written from, the standpoint of an operator who has the experience and qualifications necessary to guide others in producing the most economic results in the use of liquid fuels. Oil, in this paper, usually, means petroleum or its products but incidental reference is made to other liquid and gaseous fuels, so that the term may be considered, as referring to all liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons in comparison with solid fuels, as coal and. wood. However, only a few of the principal factors in the use of oil as a fuel can be given. The present, and prospective, high price of coal is causing users of fuel to renew inquiry as to the merits of other forms of fuel for industrial purposes. Crude oil (petroleum) is proving to be one of the world's most valuable mineral resources. The recent discovery that oil underlies a considerable area of the United States, Mexico, and other parts of the world to a greater extent than was formerly believed and the large production of some of the wells in these areas shows the probable quantity of fuel oil that may now be available. Through the energy of Lord Cowdrey, who was one of the pioneers of the oil industry in Mexico, oil has been discovered in England; some prominent geologists believe that it may be found yet, in quantity, in Great Britain. For years, oil has been known to be of great value in the manufacture of metals. It has proved incomparable in forge shops, steel foundries, heat-treating furnace s, and wherever accuracy of temperatures is essential, or where a maximum output is desired as well as quality of metal. In some types of equipment, the output produced with oil as fuel is double that obtained with coal and, at a reduction of 50 per cent, in the cost of the fuel. For example, in drop-forging plants, the metal is always waiting for the man when oil is used as fuel, whereas with coal, the man must wait for the metal to become sufficiently heated.

Conditions in underground mining are so variable that in approaching the problem of the economies effected by the use of pressure-treated mine ties and mine timbers, it is necessary to secure specific data for each mine. Facts must first be dug out to show the service life of untreated timber and the reason for its failure. Generally speaking, decay is the usual cause of failure, but in some mines mechanical destruction is an important factor. Occasionally the two causes combine to produce fail-urrs, and it is difficult to determine positively which factor is responsible. In making comparisons, it is always necessary to start with the cost in place and for this reason there must be accurate information covering the labor cost of installation and the labor cost of renewals. When treated timber is used, it is necessary to know the specifications for the treating process, whether the timber was painted, dipped, treated open tank, or impregnated under pressure according to standard specifications. It is also necessary to know the preservative used and the amount of the preservative that was retained by the timber after treatment. It is also well to know whether the timber was thoroughly air-seasoned before treatment or was green at the time it was treated. The kind of timber available, both untreated and treated, must be known and all of the factors listed above must be taken into consideration in the study of any problem. Variable Conditions A study was made recently of the untreated mine ties used by a bituminous coal company in two of its mines, which are about 20 miles apart. The mine ties were secured from the same sources for both mines. A careful check was made over a 10-yr. period on the life of untreated main-haulage ties, and it was found that in the mine where the haulage roads were on intake air the average life was approximately 5 yr., while in the other mine, where the haulage roads were on return air, the average life was 2 yr. By quenching liquid alloys, single-phase solid solutions are obtained in the ranges 0 to 42.0 at. pct Co-Au and 0 to 15 and 75 to about 100 at. pet Co-Cu. Metastable solid solutions are also found in multiphase 42.0 to 49.0 and 69. 0 to about 100 at. pet Co-Au alloys. fie inability to achieve complete solid solubiliiies in Au-co and cu-co alloys is rationalized by a conszderation of the rate processes during cooling and solidification. Trends in lattice distortion and shifts in the compositions of the melting-point minima and critical points are discussed for the binary alloys of copper, silver, and gold with some of the transition metals of the first long period. By rapidly cooling alloys from the melt, a continuous series of metastable solid solutions can often be obtained for components of similar crystal structure which normally form eutectic systems.' The eutectic system Au-Co, Fig. 1, and the peritectic system Cu-Co, Fig. 2, were investigated in order to determine the extent of the metastable solid solutions attainable with the present technique.* EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Most of the alloys were prepared by melting weighed quantities of the elements (purity greater than 99.9 pct) under hydrogen in alumina crucibles by means of induction heating. After reweighing, the alloys were cast under argon into 1 mm diam wires. However, it was not possible to prepare some of the Cu-Co alloys with the requisite homogeneity (over about 1 mm3) in this way. For these alloys, reduced powders (purity greater than 99.9 pct) were mixed for 12 to 48 hr, pressed into compacts that were sintered at 1000º to 1050°C for 6 to 48 hr under hydrogen, and then furnace-cooled. Alloy charges of a few mm3, cut from the cast wires or chipped from the sintered compacts, were heated to 1550º to 1600°C in 30 sec in an alumina insert held within a graphite support and then ejected by a pulse of helium onto a lightly polished copper strip on the inner periphery of a rotating wheel. In their analysis of Eqs. 29 and 30, the authors correctly deduce the following behavior limits for the "differential capacitance model". 1. When the rate group a is sufficiently large, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model. 2. When the rate group a is sufficiently small, the model reduces to that implied by Eq. 1 with 1 replaced by 1, i.e., the simple convection-diffusion model with a total pore volume equal to that occupied by the mobile fluid in the original model. Unfortunately, the authors' solution, Eq. C-1, to the transformed versions of Eqs. 29 and 30 does not exhibit the same limiting behavior. For example, as a approaches zero, Eq. C-1 reduces to the solution to Eq. 1 or, equivalently, the solution to Eqs. 29 and 30 for sufficiently large values of a. Therefore, it can be concluded that Eq. C-1 is not a general solution to Eqs. 29 and 30; this conclusion can be easily verified by substitution. I suggest that the correct form of Eq. C-1 is the following: It is generally realized that accounting for dispersion effects is an extremely tricky business; therefore no one should criticize the pragmatic approach of Coats and Smith who proceeded by accessible theory, made use of some available phenomenology, and who then took the trouble to check the consequences, against their own carefully undertaken experimental results. Here I should like to defend three assertions: (1) Coats and Smith copy the error of previous authors in the formulation of the so-called simple diffusion model (which error is then retained in their differential capacitance model); (2) improving the fit between data and the predictions of an arbitrary model by increasing the number of parameters is a triviality unless the parameters are disposable by being independently determined; and (3) existing experimental procedures lack sufficient resolution to clarify some current theoretical uncertainties. Taking first the view that all theoretical approaches (whether constructed by statistical, finite difference, or continuum arguments) tend to reduce to the same model form as fixed by the number and nature of the disposable parameters, one notices that the "finite-stage" model of Deans1 is equivalent to the Coats and Smith so-called differential capacitance model for the pertinent case where a

EARLY in the development of every oil field, the operators of relatively large tracts of land must decide upon a spacing plan for the wells to be drilled upon their respective tracts. Usually it is desirable to have a system of regular spacing laid out over the entire tract, making such adjustments as may be necessary near land boundaries. Unless the dip of the producing formation is very steep, the equilateral triangular arrangement is the one most generally preferred, for the very good reason that it gives the maximum amount of drainage area for the wells up to the limit at which mutual drainage interference begins. Assuming that the equilateral triangular pattern is to be used, there still remains to he decided the matter of distance between wells. Many variable factors enter into the problem of proper spacing, some of which are physical and some economic. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss these factors, as that has been done in several comprehensive articles during the past few years. In the end the decision must be based upon an estimate of the relative importance of various factors which apply to the field in question and to economic conditions in the oil industry at the time the development is getting under way. Even if the best possible spacing distance should be chosen when the problem arises, changing economic conditions and variation in physical conditions in different parts of the field may cause the original choice to become more or less unsatisfactory. Obviously, it is advantageous, once a spacing plan has been adopted, to avoid alteration of it as the field becomes better known or as conditions in the industry change, and yet be able to vary somewhat, the acreage per well in extending the area of development. Or, it may be desired to provide for an ultimate spacing considerably closer than conditions seem to warrant early in the development of the field. With these contingencies in mind, it is of interest to examine the possibilities which the equilateral triangular system affords. The literature concerning the remelting of alunlinum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the majority of the papers on this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges, and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remelt-ings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, or others, if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H², O2, H²O, co², CO, CH,, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere m = K vPH² [I] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Rijntgen and Braun4, RÖntgen and M611er5, Bircum-shaw6 and Winterhagerl have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is less than 1.000°C. One obtains: log K = - 4,702.5T + o 238 [2] Besides its usual significance, the term Ph~ represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is1 when no gas exchange Occurs between the two phases, the Pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary Occurs, the quantity of H² should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature decreases, the internal pressure of H² increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a a depending On the hydro- static pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Indeed hydrogen does not accumulate in the form of a hydride appearing as a separate solid phase. However1 even the mechanism of the solubility is not yet elucidated. INTRODUCTION This chapter is a continuation of the studies by Rustan and Stockel (1979, 1980) on techniques for automating ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The studies have been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. As a result of the studies it has been recommended that a good solution to diesel exhaust emission would be automatic, step by step control of the fans near the working place. Diesel vehicles are the major polluters underground in the mines. Therefore, we have suggested that diesel vehicles regulate the fans The goal of the continued study has been to find a way for active diesel vehicles to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. The best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that change of temperature is an inexpensive and effective way to start and stop crosscut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for starting and stopping gallery fans . This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå, Divisions of Electronics and of Mining and Rock Excavation. An advisory group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives of the local mine workers' unions, and authorities from the local offices of Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna was studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air above ground is heated in winter by hot water and the main fans push the air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide ore body. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both the intake and return sides, Fig. 1.

The orientation relationship between the dejormation and recrystallization textztres of binary Cu-P alloys of high phosphorus content was observed to he a ± 14-deg (110) rotation. According to the ori-ented-gvowth hypothesis, the same relationship should exist between a successfully flowing pain and the strained single-crystal matrix of alloys of corresponding composition. The orientations of thirty successfully growing grains were obtained in a Cu-1.0 at. pct P alloy. Both a conventional analysis and the more detailed analysis advanced in the present study demonstrate that the observed orientation relationship is not comparahle to that predicted by the oriented growth hypothesis. IT has been shown experimentally that the formation of recrystallization textures in metals may be explained on the basis of the oriented-growth hypothesis. This conclusion is based primarily on the results of cooperative experiments carried out by various investigators in aluminum. Beck and HU' suggested that the orientation relationship between the recrystallization and deformation textures of aluminum is a 38-deg(111) rotation. A similar relationship, i.e., a 40-deg(111) rotation, was observed between the primary and secondary recrys-tallization textures.' Since the secondary grains result from a process of selective growth, this naturally implies that the same mechanism is also responsible for the formation of the primary re-crystallization texture from the deformed matrix. Further evidence was provided by the experiments of Liebmann, Liicke, and Massing3 and Yoshida, Liebmann, and Lucke.4 They observed that grains which could successfully grow into strained aluminum single crystals invariably exhibited the same orientation relationships with their matrix. Thus, regardless of other opinions,5'9 these results offered good evidence in favor of the oriented-growth hypothesis. In order to examine broader applications of this oriented-growth hypothesis, experiments should be carried out in metals other than aluminum. In a recent investigation on the recrystallization textures of binary copper alloys with phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony,7 it was found that the predominant recrystallization components were related to the deformation textures by a (110) rotation. The (110) rotational relationship is different from the (111) relationship generally proposed between the recrystallization and deformation components of other binary copper alloys. 1,8,9 Applying the observations made for aluminum, the oriented-growth hypothesis predicts that the orientation relationship of grains successfully growing into the strained single crystals of either one of these copper alloys should correspond to that observed in the textural study. Verification of this prediction would provide a critical test of general applicability of the oriented-growth hypothesis to the formation of recrystallization textures in fcc metals other than aluminum. MORE than 70 igneous pipes and dikes are known to occur in Cambrian sediments throughout an approximately circular area of about 75 sq miles in southwestern Ste. Genevieve County and southeastern St. Francois County, Mo., across the southern portion of the Farmington anticline, which is outlined in fig. 1. From evidence obtained from fossil fragments taken from some of the in-trusive~, and from the similarity in composition of the more basic intrusives to those of known age in surrounding states, these pipes and dikes are believed to be at least post-Devonian and probably Cretaceous in age. As first postulated by Rust,' these intrusives are believed to represent explosion tubes, or diatremes, punched through great thicknesses of solid rock by gaseous pressure. The particular intrusive studied is located about 1 mile north of the small town of Avon at an elevation of 880 ft in the EVz SEy4 NEY4 of see. 2, T. 35N, R. 7E. Outcrop is through the Bonneterre dolomite in two separated exposures. The larger outcrop extends east and west for about 50 ft along a tributary in a small ravine (fig. 2). The smaller exposure occurs as a few scattered patches over an area 20 ft square about 100 ft to the north. The area between the exposures is covered, but scattered patches of the Bonneterre dolomite outcrop throughout the area surrounding the diatreme. Where exposed, contact relations show the surrounding dolomite to be shattered and metamorphosed to a fine-grained rock for a distance of 15 to 20 ft from the intrusive. The igneous rock occurs as a dark greenish-gray porphyry near the center of the diatreme and as a fine-grained, greenish-gray material containing lapilli and metamorphosed fragments of dolomite near the contact with the country rock. The most abundant original mineral of the porphyritic rock is olivine now largely serpentinized as the result of extensive hydrothermal alteration at time of emplacement. The most common constituent of the fine-grained rock, which occurs near the border of the intrusive, is calcite. Mica is a common constituent of both types of rock, occurring as tufts or flakes. Magnetite makes up about 2 pct of the diatreme and occurs as small irregular grains or streaks of tiny grains. Singewald and Milton' have termed the rock of this body an "augite-free alnoite." Susceptibility measurements of pulverized specimens were made from selected samples taken from both the diatreme and the surrounding country rock. The susceptibility of the Bonneterre dolomite was found to be less than 40xlO-6 cgs (centimeter-gram-second) units and that of the metamorphosed contact dolomite less than 200x10-6 cgs. Measurements of individual samples of the igneous rock showed a wide variation in susceptibility between limits of 1000x10-6 cgs to 8000x10-6 cgs, with the maximum difference occuring in samples taken only a few feet apart. The maximum value was exhibited by a highly weathered sample taken from the northern outcrop, while minimum susceptibility was determined from a partially weathered sample taken only a few feet away. These extremes are believed to represent small local concentrations of stringers and grains of magnetite crystals in the igneous rock. A detailed magnetic survey of the horizontal and vertical components of the earth's magnetic field was made over the diatreme area. Stations were occupied at 20-ft intervals as shown by the grid on fig. 2. When greater detail was desired, intervening stations were also occupied. The field instruments were supplied by the Department of Geophysics, St. Louis University. The magnetometers are the Schmidt balance type constructed by the Ruska Instrument Co. Silicon dioxide films have been prepared on silicon wafers by the oxidation of SiH, near 400°C. Results previously reported by Goldsmith and Kern7 have been qualitatively corrobovated using a system of different geometry, and significantly greater deposition rates have been achieved. The deposition rate is independent of thickness and nearly independent of the O2/SiH, ratio over a wide range; however, the rate is strongly temperature-dependent. The structure of the deposit depends upon the cleanliness of the substrate, and the electrical field strength of the deposited oxide depends upon the nature of the electrodes. MULTILEVEL interconnects in integrated circuits using aluminum metallization require an insulator that can be deposited at low temperature. Because the A1-Si eutectic is only 577°C, the maximum deposition temperature must be below about 500°C to prevent reaction of the aluminum with the silicon and with other materials in the integrated circuit. Many methods of depositing insulating films of SiO, and other dielectrics have been reported'-6 but the technique described by Goldsmith and Kern7 offers the simplest method of preparing SiO, films. The technique involves the reaction of SiH, and 0, to form SiO, films in the 300" to 500°C temperature range. Previous work using this gas system has been reported8 and the initial development work at Philco Microelectronics was done at the East Coast R&D Laboratories. 9 This paper corroborates some of the results of Goldsmith and Kern,7 shows that much higher deposition rates can be obtained than previously reported, and presents some observations on the structure of deposited SiO, films. EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the apparatus used in this study. It differs from that of Goldsmith and Kern in that 1) the gases are mixed before they enter the reaction chamber, 2) there is no fritted glass diffuser, and 3) the wafers are stationary during deposition. The control thermocouple was in a well located 0.06-in. from the substrate, and three gas supplies were used: 1 pct SiH4 in N 2, O 2, and N 2. Water vapor must be excluded from the plumbing to prevent the formation of colloidal SiO, and the SiH4 must be diluted with an inert gas because SiH4-0, mixtures are extremely flammable above about 4 pct SiH The wafer temperature was determined by attaching a thermocouple to a test wafer and the temperature was maintained to +5 C. The conditions used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The temperature range was chosen for compatibility with the A1-Si system. The volume ratio of 0, to SiH4 is the actual volume of 0, delivered to that of SiH4, taking into account the initial dilution of the SiH4. This ratio, which was used by Goldsmith and Kern,7 is a useful indicator of the experimental conditions. The active/inactive ratio is the ratio of the volume of active gases, SiH4 and O2, delivered to the volume of dilution gas. The active/inactive ratio is an important parameter to specify for deposition rate determinations since it determines the amounts of reactants that arrive at the sample per unit time. Fairly high dilution ratios were necessary to achieve uniform deposits of SiO,. Most of the process characterizations were performed on the polished (111) face of 3 to 5 ohm-cm, n-type silicon wafers which were 0.009 in. thick; but the data approximately apply to deposition of SiO, on thin films of aluminum. It is difficult to obtain accurate deposition rate data over aluminum films because of coarsening the aluminum surface during exposure to 300" to 400°C. The deposited SiO, film fol-
