Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted-templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. ALTHOUGH a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map.

Mr. Schorr says : " Brown coal and peat are briquetted as a rule without binder," but this statement is entirely true only so far as raw peat is concerned, and it is but partly true of brown coal. With regard to raw peat, briquetting without bond is carried on successfully both in Europe and America, and the development of the industry in Canada is fully described in the Bureau of Mines report for 1903, mentioned above. While there is still room for improvement in the efficiency of some of the arrangements for drying the peat previous to briquetting, a very satisfactory fuel is made at a price which enables it to compete with coal. During the late strike in the anthracite regions of Pennsylvania, the manufacture of peat: briquettes received a considerable impetus, and possibly the attention directed to it on this account may result in a. considerable increase in the output. AFTER all, mineral sanctions are not a measure of peace, they are a measure of war, and we must regard them as such. We have had two examples now in the world-first, Italy, and secondly, Japan-where we have applied sanctions. When we got ready to apply sanctions to Italy that would hurt, they went to war. In the Far East, when we applied sanctions against Japan, in the latter part of 1941, there was a quick reaction, and the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

CHARLES WASHINGTON MERRILL, the second to be honored by the award of the James Douglas gold medal, throughout his entire professional career has been identified with the cyanide method of extracting gold from ore. To his efforts this branch of the metallurgical industry owes a large measure of its success in continuing to treat some gold ores profitably, in spite of economic adversities. Mr. Merrill was born at Concord, N. H., Dec. 21, 1869, and received the degree of B. S. from the School of Mines at the University of California in 1891. Among his first professional connections was the Standard Mining Co., at Bodie, Cal., followed by a short engagement at Harqua Hala, Ariz. From 1895 to 1899 he was connected with the Montana Mining Co., at Marysvale, Mont., and then followed his nine years of fruitful association with the Homestake Mining Co. In 1909, the Merrill Co. was formed, to exploit more than a score of patents granted to Mr. Merrill, covering various phases of the cyanide process and numerous pieces of equipment for its operation; among the most noteworthy of these innovations were the Merrill filter-press, and the use of zinc dust as a precipitant. The Merrill Co. has a long record of successful accomplishments in its chosen field, to mention only the plants at the Dome mines of Ontario and at the Sta. Gertrudis mines of Mexico as among the more recent. Mr. Merrill is president also of the Western Ore Purchasing Co.; and a director in two gold dredging companies of California.

FACED with a scarcity of labor in its operations at Alma, Colo., the London Mines and Milling Co. has been employing women for several months in its sorting and crushing plant. The results so far obtained indicate that women can be used successfully and to good advantage on a number of various jobs around the surface plant of an ordinary mine. Eight women are now employed as sorters to pick waste out of the ore as it passes by them on a sorting belt. After a short period of breaking in they have become adept at their work and are doing better work than that formerly done by the class of labor obtainable. They are continually warned and instructed, particularly from the standpoint of safety and their physical strength.

This paper presents the resitlts of an investigation of two-phase, gm-liquid flow in horizontal pipelines. Experimental data were taken in three field-size, horizontal pipelines, two of which were constructed for this purpose. The data were obtained using water, distillate and crude oil separately as the liquid phase, and natural gas as the second phase. Experimental pressure-length traverse, liquid holdup and flow-pattern data were collected for each set of flow rates. These data were used to develop three correlations that are presented herein. The liquid-holdup values correlated with various flow parameters without regard to the existing flow pattern. The same was true for the energy-loss factors. A new flow-pattern map is presented that appears to be quite reliable, but not required for the pressure-loss calculations. The liquid-holdup correlation and the energy-loss factor correlation are used in conjunction with a two-phase flow power balance, developed during this study, to predict the pressure losses that occur during gas-liquid flow in horizontal pipelines. A recommended calculational procedure is given, as well as a statistical analysis of the results. This procedure lends itself to computer application, since several small pressure decrements are needed to calculate a pressure-length traverse. The correlations are shown graphically, but may be curve fitted with existing curve-fitring computer programs. INTRODUCTION Due to the frequent occurrence of gas-liquid flow in pipelines and the desire to accurately calculate the pressure losses that occur in these lines, two-phase flow is of considerable interest to the petroleum, chemical and nuclear industries. In the petroleum industry, gas-liquid mixtures have been transported over relatively long distances in a common line due to the advent of centralized gathering and separation systems. Long two-phase flowlines are usually accompanied by large pressure drops which influence the design of the system. Gas-lift installations are designed on the basis of known tubing pressures at the wellheads. The horizontal flowline connecting the wellhead and the separator system must be correctly sized in order to minimize the horizontal flowline pressure losses and the wellhead tubing pressure. Practically all oilwell production design involves horizontal two-phase flow in pipeknes. All of the flow processes of oil and gas production must be studied simultaneously to insure good well design. Since the beginning of offshore oilfield development, long horizontal flowlines have been constructed. Because pressure losses greatly influence the performance of producing wells, a method is desired that can be used to predict such pressure losses and select optimum flowline size. Several types of gas-liquid flow exist, and many of these are discussed by Gouse The study of pressure gradients, fluid distributions and flow patterns that occur in horizontaI multiphase flow is made difficult by the great number of variables involved. The various flow regimes give rise to changing velocities of the fluid particles in all directions. These instabilities of the interface between the gas and liquid prohibit the determination of actual vector velocities of fluid particles in each phase. Also, it is practically impossible to arrive at correct sets of boundary conditions. Therefore, most investigators have concluded that a solution to the problem by the classical fluid dynamics approach, whereby the Navier-Stokes equationsM are formulated and solved, is far too complex. Other methods must be utilized to develop general correlations that will predict the behavior of gas-liquid horizontal flow systems. Multiphase flow studies have sought to develop a technique with which the pressure drop can be calculated. Pressure losses in two-phase, gas-liquid flow are quite different from those encountered in single-phase flow; in most cases an interface exists and the gas slips past the liquid. The interface may be smooth or have varying degrees of roughness, depending on the flow pattern. Therefore, a transfer of energy from the gaseous phase to the liquid phase may take place while energy is lost from the system through the wetting phase at the pipe wall. Such an energy transfer may be either in the form of heat exchange or of acceleration. Since each phase must flow through a smaller area than if it flowed alone, amazingly high pressure losses occur when compared to single-phase flow. Most investigators of horizontal two-phase flow phenomena have chosen to separate their experimental data into several groups of observed flow patterns or regimes.

CADWALLADER EVANS JR. has long been a leading figure in the anthracite mining industry and one of Pennsylvania's prominent citizens. He is, in fact, a native son, having been horn in Pittsburgh on Sept. 17, 1880. At Lehigh, from which he graduated in 1901 with the degree of Mechanical Engineer, Tom Girdler was a classmate, and both were active in football affairs. Going hack to Pittsburgh, he got his first job as trouble shooter for the Oliver Iron & Steel Co. A year later he entered the coal industry, getting a job with the Blaine Coal Co. as inspector of construction and later was superintendent of the Blaine mine at Elizabeth. Pa.

James Gayley, Braddock, Pa. (communication to the Secretary) : Mr. Potter has made reference to our practice at the Edgar Thomson works in the direction of increasing the life of the lining, and mentions the product of one of our furnaces as having reached a total of 370,000 tons. It may be interesting to know that this furnace has been put out of blast with a record of 452,685 tons, after a run of three years and nine months. A companion-furnace to this will produce, hefore the present year is ended, half a million tons. As Mr. Potter has quite correctly designated this as " the newest problem in furnace-practice," a description of the construction of this furnace lining may be Welcome to members. The bricks used in the lining are 9 and 134 inches long, with the requisite quantity of straight and key-shapes to turn the circle. There bricks are well suited for enclosing the numerous bosh-plates used for cooling. The bosh-plates (the efficient fortress of the lining) extend from the top of the tuyere arch to the mantel, and are inserted in rows, 18 inches to 2 feet apart. These form a perfect defence against encroachment on the bosh-lining, and leave the bosh at the end of the blast of the same thickness as at the beginning. The protection afforded by these bosh plates is the principal cause of the increased duration of the furnace-lining. But it must be noted that the shape and material of the plate are essential elements. The most serviceable plate is that made of bronze or copper. We have tried every form of iron plates without obtaining satisfactory results. These were replaced with bronze plates, built into the lining, which gave excellent results so long as they did not leak; but when this occurred, as it did in time, the water was shut off, and, since the plates could only be removed with difficulty, they were allowed to burn off. This permitted encroachment on the bosh-walls, which thus became enlarged beyond the limit required for economical practice. WINFIELD SCOTT MORRIS, known from Coast to Coast within the petroleum industry as "Buck" Morris, is and has been for several years an outstanding man in the Petroleum Division of the A.IM.E., so it is most natural to have him as the Chairman of the Division. "Buck" has been such a vociferous promoter of everything TEXAS that most of his friends believe him to be a "Longhorn" by birth-but the records show he was born at Wilmington, N. C., on July 29, 1901. He worked his way through college and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1924 with a B.S., followed by a C.E. in 1927. His graduation thesis was entitled "De¬sign of a Modern Oil Refinery."

John Malcolm Fraser became Prime Minister in December 1975 when Australian voters gave him the biggest landslide victory in the history of the Federation. From the previous administration, Mr. Fraser has inherited an atrocious economic mess: a staggering budget deficit, an unrealistically overvalued currency, a 14% annual rate of inflation, mounting unemployment, and a demoralized business community. He has already tackled some of these problems with some measure of success; but he has been in power for barely a year, and it's too soon to see a turn-around.

. In the early decades of the past century the method of starting iron blast-furnaces by " scatlolding-down" seems to have been in universal use for coke-furnaces and, at least in this country, for charcoal-furnaces also. It was likewise used at some of the early anthracite-furnaces, as is stated in the important " Reminiscences" printed by the late Samuel Thomas.' It had been generally superseded in Great Britain as early as 1850, by some variations of the plan now used, and was rarely used when Percy wrote.2 On the Continent it was still followed ill the 60's; and was elaborately described by Valerius in 1852. I have never read any statement as to when and by whom " scaffolding " was first dispensed with, but the following extracts from journals of my father seem to fix an authentic date for an instance in this country: " [Pittsburg] July 12, 1838.—Went with Major Wade to his foundry,etc., and he gave me a letter to D. Tyler, Esq., Farrandsville, Agent Boston Coke & Iron Co." " [Lockhaven, Pa.] July 18, 1838.—Heard there was a flat-boat going to take some gentlemen up to Farrandsville. Got on boat and to Farrandsville, 5 or 6 miles, in 1 hr. 30 min. Dined, and then delivered my letter to Ma Tyler, who showed me much attention, and everything belonging to the furnace, and had the water turned on the wheel that I might see the blowing-cylinders at work. There are two cylinders, 6-ft. stroke, -56 in. in diameter, but they find that one makes more than enough blast for the furnace. The furnace has 16-ft. boshes, 7-ft. tunnel-head, and is 47 ft. high, 3 tuyeres, and 3 heating-ovens [hot blast-ovens]. A

Oriented, oxygen-doped niobium bicrystals were tested in liquid lithium. The grain boundaries were attacked preferentially. The depth of the penetrated zone varies as (time)2. The penetration was aniso-tropic, had a high activation energy, and increased with the increased oxygen doping level. A possible model was proposed to account for the experimental observations. 1 HE grain boundary penetration of a metallic system by liquid metal has been studied by several investigators. Their results are summarized by Bishop.' Most of these works show that the penetration by liquid metal corresponds to the phenomenon of liquid metal wetting. In the case of a grain boundary, wetting will occur when twice the solid-liquid interfacial tension is smaller than the grain boundary tension resulting in the replacement of the grain boundary by two new solid-liquid interfaces. Other possibilities exist; for example, the atoms of the liquid metal may diffuse into the grain boundary region due to chemical potential gradient. The gradient can be produced by impurity segregation or simply be due to the increase in solubility in the grain boundary region. The penetrated grain boundary in these cases may remain solid at the test temperature. The Nb-Li system has been of considerable interest because of its possible technological applications. For fundamental interest it provides a possibility of studying the grain boundary penetration process which is not controlled by the wetting mechanism. The pure niobium is not attacked by the liquid lithium, but if niobium containing more than 300 to 500 ppm oxygen by weight is exposed to liquid lithium, corrosion occurs at the solid-liquid interface and preferentially at grain boundaries. Previous investigators2-' have proposed that this preferential corrosion at grain boundaries is caused by oxygen segregation there, with subsequent inward diffusion of lithium to form a Li-Nb-0 compound. These investigators also found that the corrosion could be retarded by adding 1 pct Zr to the niobium to precipitate the oxygen as ZrO2 upon proper heat treatment. However, there are no quantitative data on the kinetics of the grain boundary penetration process to test the validity of the proposed corrosion mechanism. In this work an investigation of this penetration process in oriented bicrystals was made as a function of the oxygen doping level in the bulk niobium and the grain boundary orientation. A possible model for the penetration process based on the experimental results was proposed. EXPERIMENTS Oriented niobium bicrystals were grown by arc-zone melting oriented single-crystal seeds.7 These bicrystals contained simple tilt boundary. The [001] directions in the two grains were tilted about a common [110]. The bicrystals were 31/2 in. long and 5 by 4 in. in cross section with the straight, symmetric, planar grain boundary longitudinally bisecting the crystal rod. The bicrystals were doped with oxygen by anodically depositing a layer of Nb2O on the surface in a 70 pct HNO solution at 100 v, using a stainless-steel cathode. The specimens were homogenized by annealing in evacuated quartz tubes at 127 5°C. Oxygen content of the niobium was measured from microhardness values, after DiStefano and Litmman.' Supplementary checks were made with vacuum-fusion analysis.7 Individual test specimens cut from the doped bi-crystal rods, about by by % in. in size, were tested inside double jacket sealed capsules. The inner jacket was niobium, the outer was stainless steel. The niobium inner jacket eliminated the problem of dissimilar-metal mass transfer.' The lithium (99.8 pct pure, obtained from Lithium Corp. of America) was handled only in a purified argon atmosphere in a Blickman stainless-steel glove box. After introduction of lithium, the capsules were sealed by welding. Further detailed experimental procedures are given in Ref. 7. The capsules were heat-treated in vertical Marshall resistance furnaces. Temperatures were controlled to When heating above 1100°C, it was necessary to seal the furnace work tube and flow argon through to prevent failure of the stainless-steel outer jacket of the capsule. Tests were made on 6" 2", 16" 2, and 33" i2" bicrystals at oxygen levels up to 2600 ppm by weight in the 6' and 16" crystals and with 1300 ppm oxygen in the 33' crystals. The oxygen levels were controlled to 100 ppm. Most of the quantitative data were obtained from 16" bicrystals between 800" and 1050°C. The capsules were quenched into water after the test and cut open with a water-cooled abrasive wheel. The capsules were then submerged in water, which dissolved the lithium and freed the specimen. Measurement of the depth of the penetrated zone in the grain boundary was done either on metallographically prepared surfaces or directly on the grain boundary plane after the specimen was fractured in tension in the grain boundary plane. The depth of penetration measured by both methods agreed well. Further details describing these techniques have been reported elsewhere.'p7

The Manual of the Oil and Gas Industry, under the Revenue Act of 1918, published by the Treasury Department for the guidance of oil companies in preparing their estimates of future recoverable oil for the purpose of calculating depletion, gives the first large public collection of comparative decline curves for the whole country. It is a matter of both scientific and practical interest to so arrange these data that the pools can be readily compared. There are certain difficulties in such a comparison, however: (1) The economic limit varies from 50 to 2000 bbl. a year in different pools taken. (2) Because of this variation in economic limit, the range of data shown makes comparison possible only for wells of intermediate size. In order to be as inclusive as possible, I have taken as an expression of the rate of decline the amount of oil produced in the period during which a well drops from 3000 to 2000 bbl. a year. No period of smaller production could be used because of the high economic limit in California; and no period of larger production and yet include the small well areas of the Appalachian. As it is, the Lima-Indiana wells are excluded. In a few instances, curves were extrapolated to obtain the reading, where the curve seemed regular enough to warrant it. In general, the amount of oil, in barrels, produced while a well declined from 3000 bbl. to 2000 bbl. a year is shown in Table 1.

THIS year's Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division is a noted member of a small and select group of practical scientists now working in this country and in Canada to improve the production and properties and to reduce the cost of super-quality carbon and alloy steels; he is one of those all-important leavening agents-a man with his feet always on the ground but capable of putting his head into the clouds on occasion-that are so necessary in applying science sensibly to the practical problems of steel production. He is equally at home in a discussion of the free energy of deoxidizing reactions or the entropy of the formation of stable sulphides, and in a consideration of the relative advantages of the basic-electric and the open-hearth furnace for the production of rimming steels in the Detroit area. Gilbert Soler was born of American parents in Havana, Cuba, just forty years ago. He graduated as a ceramic engineer from Ohio State University in 1930 and received a Master of Science degree a year later. In 1940 he received the degree of metallurgical engineer from the same institution.

The recently announced run of three years, nine months and eleven days made by a crucible steel melting furnace of the Columbia Tool Steel Co., which is claimed as a world's record, brings forcibly to our attention the great improvements that have been made in the design, construction and operation of the Siemens regenerative crucible melting furnace since its introduction in this country. Credit for this advance should be given to the furnace designer, the manufacturer of refractories, and the operators, of the furnaces, whose persistent efforts and intelligent co-operation in attacking the problem have resulted so satisfactorily. There are three factors that determine the life of a crucible furnace, or any other furnace for that matter: Design, nature of refractories, and conditions of operation (including the nature of steel melted); and to some extent these factors are interdependent. Thus, for instance, if a crucible furnace is to be operated single turn and allowed to cool off considerably at night, in order to save fuel, the use of clay-brick melting holes may be advisable, since silica brick is not well adapted to endure repeated heating and cooling. But the total life of a clay-brick melting hole is necessarily short. Again, if local conditions such as danger of flood make necessary the building of the furnace largely above ground, so that the radiation of heat is promoted, the cooling down of the furnace over the week ends, when no steel is melted, will be considerable—and the contraction of the furnace that results tends to wrack it to pieces. The character of the metal being melted affects the life of the furnace to a great extent. Low-carbon steels and steels made from iron and charcoal require higher temperatures and much longer melting time than high-carbon steel or steel made largely from scrap; the life of the furnace will be shorter, and the number of heats melted will be much less, when such materials are melted. The figures available, showing the life of furnaces, are for this reason especially not strictly comparative, since the variations in the steel melted undoubtedly affect the life to a greater or less extent. Since the exposition of the behavior of certain iron alloys by Sykesl involving the existence of an austenite loop and the discovery of such a loop in the chrome-iron system by Bain,2 there has been much conjecture both on his part and on the part of metallurgists in general as to the exact shape and location of this loop. In previous work commercial steel has been used and the microscope has been employed to locate the critical points so that the position of the loop has been quite approximate. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the critical points of the carbon-free alloys but all of these for one reason or another have failed. A satisfactory method for studying these phenomena is presented here. MateRial The first difficulty in this study was to obtain pure chromium-iron alloys. This has been overcome by melting in a vacuum electrolytic iron and chromium analyzing 99.84 Cr, Fe and C. A pure magnesite crucible was used and the melt allowed to solidify in the crucible. A typical analysis is chromium, 10.10 per cent., carbon, 0.006 per cent., silicon and manganese nil. To overcome the problem presented by segregation, ingots were made into wire 0.04 in. in diameter. This was accomplished by hand-forging the ingots into rods, using an oxyhydrogen flame for heating, in order to avoid carbon. Subsequently the rods were swaged to wire, the heating being carried out in hydrogen. Thus local segregation was eliminated although differences in analysis between portions 50 ft. apart were noted. An electric-resistance method was first tried to determine the critical points, but due to the physical defects in the wire this failed. Bain had previously shown the presence or absence of critical points in a qualitative way by observing the sag in a catenary. The author has devised the following method which gives an accurate determination of the critical points from expansion-temperature curves of suspended wire, a special telescopic dilatometer being used for the purpose.

The ideal fuel for burning ceramic wares is the one that, among other characteristics, has little or no sulfur. For that reason wood was long considered the most desirable fuel but its high cost has practically eliminated its use except in regions where it is very abundant or other circumstances warrant its choice. The fuels commonly employed are natural and producer gas, oil, and coal. The last named is undoubtedly the most important, not only in this country but abroad. Occasionally anthracite is used but the larger part is bituminous. The quality of the coal used depends on the kind and the value of the products being manufactured. For some materials, such as common brick, hollow block, etc., the quality of the coal is of less importance than in the manufacture of polychrome terra cotta, pottery, porcelain, etc. It is obvious that in burning clays that contain notable amounts of pyrite, marcasite or gypsum, as is the case with many common clays, the sulfur content of the fuel is of much less importance. The permissible amount of sulfur in the coal used will depend on the kind of product being manufactured. "A good sample1 of coal commonly used in pottery ovens has something like this quantity of sulfur: total sulfur, 1.20 per cent.; sulfur in ash, 0.11 per cent.; volatile sulfur, 1.09 per cent." This is based on English pottery practice. Correspondence with a. number of leading manufacturers in this country has produced the following figures: Sanitary Ware.—(a) 1.0 per cent, maximum, (b) 0.5 per cent. Sewer Pipe.—(a) 1.2 per cent., (b) 1.1 per cent, present run, 3.0 per cent, has been used. Terra Cotta.—(a) 0.5 per cent, basis of contract, 1.0 per cent, approximate. Pottery.—1.0 per cent, contract, 1.5 per cent, probable content. Enameled Brick.—1.3 per cent, maximum, (a) and (6) designate different firms giving figures. It is my purpose to give some of the results obtained by an experience of nearly seven years in working ores by the method frequently called the Washoe Process, and in several mills of which I have had charge, but principally in the Owyhee Mill, at Silver City, Idaho, which had twenty 650-pound stamps, and sixteen pans. I shall discuss here merely the mechanical details for working ores generally, subdividing the subject as follows : 1. Preparation of the ore for the stamps; 2. The crushing in the battery; 3. The settling of sand or pulp in vats or tanks; 4. The treatment in the pans; 5. The results obtained in settlers, agitators, and concentrators; 6. The straining of quicksilver, cleaning of amalgam, and retorting; 7. The saving of slimes and their subsequent treatment; 8. The loss of quicksilver. For descriptions of the various kinds of orebreakers, stamps, tanks, pans, settlers, etc., I must refer to the various works on these subjects, prominent among which are the reports of the United States Commissioner of Mining Statistics,and the volume on "Mining Industry," the third volume of the United States Geological Survey on the Line of the Fortieth Parallel through the gold and silver bearing regions of the great West, undertaken under the able guidance of Clarence King, assisted by Mr. James D. Hague and others. In this discussion it will be assumed that the general arrangement of the quartz mill is understood; and the question will be treated how to secure, from such a mill, the greatest economy in working, combined with the largest results. This place seems fittest for a single preliminary suggestion—namely, that there should be double "floors" throughout the mill, so that nothing can sift through and be lost.
