THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher

There is now in use at the mines of the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co., at Lyon Mountain, New York, an ore-concentrating machine or jig, which, in view of the increasing attention given to the subject of concentrating lean ores of iron, seems worthy of notice. This Conkling Jig, as it is called, is not entirely unknown, having been used at several places with more or less success; but as yet, I believe, no drawings of it or records of its work have found a place in print. Although the jig will be found to be merely an adaptation of old forms, there are several points which deserve attention, particularly the method of central discharge, of freeing the bearings from grit, and the rotation of the sieve or screen. The ore-body at Lyon Mountain consists of a bed of rather compact, granular magnetite, occurring in a gueiss formation. The side walls of the ore-body are not sharply defined, the ore 011 either side becoming gradually poorer as the distance from the central point of the body increases. It is this lean ore, which, before the introduction of the jigs, was thrown away as waste, that is now concentrated. The material treated conseqnently consists of magnetite, intermixed with the component parts of gneiss, viz. quartz, felspar, hornblende, and mica. Grains of trap also form part of this material. These come from dykes of trap, which cross the ore-body at intervals. The ore which is to be concentrated usually contains from 30 to 40 per cent. of metallic iron. It is first crushed to the size of two inches, or less, by two large Blake crushers. The material from these crushers passes by a shute lined with screens, having holes 2 inches in diameter, to a second set of four crushers, set so as to close to one inch. The product from this set of crushers, together with that which passes through the screens in the shute, is then taken by an elevator to the top of the mill, and passed through a revolving screen, perforated with ) inch holes. Extensive beds of rock salt occur in New York, Michigan, Kansas, and Texas. Wells are drilled through the beds, cased, and equipped with a suspended center tube. By circulating water through such a well, the soluble saline is dissolved and a brine produced. Operation of a well results ordinarily in the formation of an inverted conical cavity in the saline, inasmuch as the dissolving action of the fresh water is more rapid at the top of the bed than at the bottom. Under continued operations, the side wall of the cavity becomes so flat that a blanket of mud is deposited thereon and if the bed is overlain with shale or a soft rock caving follows. Three methods of operating wells have been employed—the "Tully plan," "the Detroit plan," and "the Trump plan." Both the Tully plan and the Detroit plan involve the formation of the aforesaid conical cavity with constant caving of shale above and deposition of mud on the side wall; the Trump plan was developed to avoid both these circumstances and thus materially prolong the life of a well. Details of the three plans follow. The Tully Plan In the Tully plan, the water passes down the annular space between the casing and the center tube, the brine rising in the center tube (Figs. I and 2). An inverted conical cavity is formed, the side wall of which relatively soon becomes so flat that it is blanketed by mud and impurities from the rock salt; this blanket limits dissolving action to the perimeter of the base of the cone, situated at the top of the saline bed. Caving of the overlying strata follows, and the total production of brine from the well is comparatively small. The Detroit Plan In the Detroit plan, the water passes down the center tube, the brine rising in the annular space between the center tube and casing (Figs. I and 2). Initially, this flow forms a pear-shaped cavity in the bottom of the salt bed, but this cavity soon changes in shape to that of an inverted cone, as under the Tully plan, with the attendant disadvantages inherent in that plan. Oil and gas development as well as extensive leasing in Kentucky during 1940 has shown a marked improvement over the past three years.$ The most noticeable improvement is the gas development in eastern Kentucky and the deep tests being drilled by major oil interests. In western Kentucky, 406 wells were drilled, of which 173 were oil producers, 12 were gas wells and 221 were dry or abandoned. The number of dry tests was large, because no important, new oil or gas pool was discovered and many of the dry holes could be considered wildcat tests. However, with either oil or gas possibilities from Pennsylvanian formations on through Mississippian, Silurian, Devonian, and Ordovician, this percentage of dry holes seems rather high. Many of the dry tests possibly should have been tested in deeper horizons before being abandoned: namely, Silurian and Ordovician ages. In eastern Kentucky, 213 wells were drilled, of which 113 were gas producers, 61 were oil wells, and 39 were dry holes. Of these wells, 117 were drilled in the most important Big Sandy gas field, in Floyd, Pike, Knott and Martin Counties, and of this number 103 were gas producers, 5 were oil wells, and 9 were dry holes. In the Big Sinking oil field of Estill, Lee and Powell Counties, 70 of the remaining 96 wells were drilled, j6 being oil producers. During 1940, four deep tests were drilled in eastern Kentucky. One test penetrated the Knox dolomite in Knox County and was dry; no St. Peter sand was encountered. Another test in Lee County had some gas in what might be called St. Peter sand, according to the State Department, and also some gas deeper in the Knox dolomite. In Wolfe County, a small oil well was completed in the Ordovician, which was undoubtedly of Trenton age. ilt the present time, four deep tests are being drilled, all of which will go to the Knox dolomite. In Elliott County, on the Burke dome, the Inland Gas Co, is drilling at 3650 ft. In Magoffin County, on the Paint Creek uplift, the Cumberland Petroleum Co. is drilling at 3800 ft. In Clark County, in the Ruckerville fault area, W. 0. Allen is drilling at 1800 ft. In Laurel County, on the Sinking Creek dome, the Globe Oil and Gas Co. is drilling at I750 ft. If production is encountered in the Trenton, St. Peter, or Knox dolomite in any of these tests, eastern Kentucky will experience a marked increase in deep development.

In the history of mining in this country there has been nothing exactly similar to the Mesabi iron-range in Minnesota, and the conditions there prevalent. Soft-ore mines are found in many parts of the country. In some the deposits are vertical, and are worked in open pits, or have been so worked, until it was found cheaper to go under ground. In other localities, the ore is scattered through clay beds in the form of hard lumps. These clay beds are sometimes excavated in open pits, and the ore separated by washing. On the Mesabi, the ore itself occurs in strata, and these strata appear quite flat to one standing upon the ground. The ore is soft in the main, and does not require much sorting to free it from foreign or deleterious substances. It is usually covered by the glacial drift-mantle, but occasionally passes beneath a capping of jasperoid rock called " taconite." The ore is twice or three times the thickness of the layer of drift lying upon it. This drift consists of clay, sand, and gravel, with occasional beds of large boulders. There is great difference of opinion among competent miners as to the cheapest methods of mining this ore. It is admitted that local conditions will govern largely ; but there is such a similarity among many of the mines that it seems possible to arrive at some general conclusions on the subject. A typical example of a Mesabi mine is found in the Biwabik. It is one of the largest, and is the most advanced in development. Not a single ton of ore has yet been shipped from this mine, but the expense of the explorations upon which the following description is based has exceeded $60,000. It is seldom that such accurate and complete exploration of a deposit of this magnitude has been possible in the space of time which has elapsed since the discovery of this ore-body. It lies in a new. region, and was remote from railroads until last August, yet, not only the width and length but the depth and quality of the ore-deposit have been learned, and the probable expense of' mining its 20,000,000 tons of ore has been closely figured. EXTENSIVE investigations in the field of residual strain measurement by X-ray diffraction have been made by Bollenrath, Hauk, and Osswald,1 by Smith and Wood,2'3 by Greenough; by Rosenthal and Norton." and many others. Since X-ray strain measuremeits apply only to those crystals of the test body which are of the proper condition and orientation to diffract and since the residual strains revealed may be accompanied by either body or tex-tural stresses, there has been considerable disagreement among investigators with respect to the validity of conclusions in this field. Although the experi-mentors have employed a variety of loading schemes, surface preparations, and X-ray wave lengths, the observations almost invariably have been made only on the outer surfaces of the specimens. The present note is not to be construed as an exposition of a new method of stress analysis by X-ray strain measurements on sections but as a presentation of some results which point to interesting possibilities for further experiments with sections. The two test rods used in this study were of ingot iron annealed at 910°C. The initial length of the gage section was 2 in. and the diameter was 0.415 in. Cross-sections were cut from the ends of the annealed rods to provide strain-free material. The tensile rod was axially loaded the desired amount in a commercial testing machine. A 1 in. portion of the gage length was cut from the other rod and was subjected to compression in the same machine. Details of this plastic straining of each rod are given in the upper half of Table I. A half-cylinder piece about 1/4 in. long was obtained by making a short longitudinal plane cut containing the axis of the rod near the center of the gage length. From adjacent material a disk about 1/8 in. thick was cut to provide the cross-section specimen. Later another section was cut from this same region with an angle of 30" between the normal to its surface and the axis of the test rod. A cross-section and a longitudinal section were cut from the compression rod in a similar manner. All of these as well as the strain-free cross-sections were mounted in Bakelite and used as specimens for the following X-ray strain measurements. During the course of the study, it became apparent that the condition of the surface of a specimen was a highly critical factor. One of the annealed strain-free specimens as a control was subjected to about 24 hr of polishing with fine alumina, interrupted about every 2 hr for etching with 1 pct nital. Its lattice parameter was determined at intervals from measurements on back-reflection X-ray diffraction patterns, which were calibrated with diffraction from tungsten powder. The parameter gradually approached the value found in the literature for strain-free iron and remained there, within the limits of the experimental error. This determined a long polishing and etching procedure which was adopted for all the specimens and which gave X-ray results from the surfaces believed to be representative of each specimen as a whole. A large number of back-reflection patterns were made with cobalt and chromium radiation, all at normal incidence. Except for some preliminary stationary exposures made to monitor the removal of cold work from the surfaces, each exposure was made with the specimen slowly translating and the film slowly rotating. In appropriate cases a thin layer of a standard metal powder, tungsten with cobalt radiation and silver with chromium, was dusted over a film of vaseline on the surface of the specimen to serve to calibrate the X-ray patterns. D. C. Hilty—This paper is a useful and timely addition to our store of quantitative data relating to manganese distribution between slag and metal in steel-making processes. For some time, many of us have suspected that the values of Kmn derived by Körber and Oelsen might be too low, and this paper now appears to confirm that suspicion. Application of the new constant to openhearth data should prove interesting. The manganese deoxidation curves of fig. 4 agree fairly well with direct measurements of isothermal solubilities of oxygen in liquid iron containing manganese that have recently been made at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Labs., Inc. According to the solubility data just mentioned, however, the curves for 1550" and 1600°C lie much closer to each other than the authors have indicated. In other words, the solubility measurements suggest that the logarithm of the oxygen solubility is not a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperature, as the authors have assumed for their calculations. It seems possible that this discrepancy may be due in part to the authors' use of the distribution coefficient, L,,, obtained from Taylor and Chipman's curve for the solubility of oxygen in iron as shown in fig. 2. Taylor and Chipman gave the equation of this curve as —6320 Log % 0 - ---T + 2.734 Their data, however, can be fitted equally well by a curve having the equation: 13.23 x104 1.18x10" Log % O = 36.350 -13.23x10 Moreover, this curve also fits the authors' oxygen distribution data somewhat better than does the linear curve of Taylor and Chipman. Its use in the derivation of Lo for calculation of the deoxidation curves by the authors' eq 15 causes the effect of temperature on the calculated curves of fig. 4 to agree quite well with the temperature effect that has been observed. An experimental determination of the temperature coefficient of the manganese reaction appears to be desirable. J. E. Stukel—Because the authors have done such an excellent job, my comments will be confined to additional information. Very shortly Professor T. L. Joseph and I will publish the results of a study of the reaction between molten manganese and silica. It was found that electrolytic manganese, melted in silica crucibles, reacted with the silica to form a silico-manganese alloy containing 18 pct silicon (1500°C) and a silica saturated MnO-SiO, slag. Therefore, the presence of silicon and its oxides in the Fe-Mn-0 system will affect the equilibrium. Carbon is also an important factor. The higher the carbon content of the iron the less ability manganese has to reduce silica. As a matter of interest, recently a study of the manganese equilibrium in carbon saturated iron and blast furnace slags was completed at Carnegie Institute of Technology. As a comparison to the present study, 2 to 5 hr were required to reach equilibrium and temperature was a much more important factor than slag composition in determining the (Mn)/(MnO) ratio. These results will also be published in the near future. It can be seen, therefore, that the results of this paper cannot be applied directly to openhearth studies without a degree of flexibility. J. Chipman (authors' reply)—With regard to the effect of silicon on the manganese constant, this effect is, of course, known. Much more data is needed in order to establish it accurately, and I hope we can look forward to having some accurate data on that. Mr. Hilty suggests that a three-term expression for the Taylor-Chipman solubility of oxygen in liquid iron might fit a little better than the two-term equation. I think that it would be too great a compliment to the precision of the data to employ a three-term equation, and I would still recommend the simple, two-term expression.

A useful method for estimating the entropy of NaCl type compounds has been developed by combining the Debye theory of specific heat with the Lindemann formula. This method pemnits calculation of the entropy from a knowledge of the atomic weight, atomic volume, and melting point of the compound. Comparison of the calculated and observed entropies of 35 NaCl type compounds over a wide temperature range yields good agreement thus establishing the usefulness of the method. Application of the method to other crystal types is also discussed. KUBASCHEWSKI~ has suggested a useful method of estimating the enthalpy of formation of inter-metallic compounds from a knowledge of the crystal structure, lattice parameter, and heats of sublimation of the component elements. This method is quite valuable in predicting the tendency for compound formation in a given system and is of particular value in considering systems for which no experimental data are available. In order to supplement the enthalpy calculation afforded by Kubschewski's method, it would be of value to be able to estimate the entropy of compounds so that the entropy and free energy of formation could be evaluated. Although a considerable body of such data determined by calorimetric and equilibration techniques exists at present, the difficulty of making such measurements (particularly at high temperatures) and the ever increasing number of new compounds which are of interest make the desirability of such a computational method clear. This paper deals with a method for calculating the entropy of a compound from a knowledge of the atomic weight, atomic volume, and melting point. Since these data are generally easier to determine and therefore more readily available than thermo-dynamic data, they should provide an additional tool in estimating the stability and reactivity of compounds at high temperatures. I) THE ENTROPY OF PURE METALS As a first approximation, the specific heat of a pure metal can be represented by a sum of terms where C,($/tI is the vibrational specific heat calculated on the basis of the Debye theory, lo4 TC, (0/T) is an approximation to the Cp - C, correction. T is the electronic specific heat, and Cp (p) is the magnetic specific heat. Although the Debye theory does not provide a complete description of the vibrational specific heat, i.e., the Debye temperature 0 is not a constant, it does provide a good approximation when used properly. Blackman6'7 has written several reviews on this subject discussing the different values of 0 determined by various methods (specific heat, X-rays, elastic constants, electrical resistivity, and so forth), as well as the observed temperature dependence of 0 with T. In the present case the 0 in Eq. [I] naturally refers to the specific heat 0. The variation of Debye 0 (as determined from specific heat measurements) with temperature is observed to exhibit its most radical behavior at very low temperatures. At higher temperatures the 8 values are observed to become more nearly constant. Blackman6'7 has presented the variation of 0 with temperature for several metals. His tabulation is reproduced in Table I. Reference to Table I shows that above a certain temperature level, 0 remains fairly constant. The value of 0 which is most useful in computing the specific heat, and hence the entropy, is the value of 0 in the range 0/6 « T « 0. In 1910, Lindemann' suggested a relation for estimating Debye 0 values. According to this formula, where V is the atomic volume, T is the melting point in 'K, M is the atomic weight, and CL is a constant. Mott and Jones9 present this formula and state that there is at present no satisfactory theoretical explanation, but that it does have an empirical basis. By using the valuesof 0 in Table I along with known1' values of M, T, and the molar volume VM, where the Lindemann constant can be evaluated. This

The Getchell area in the northern Osgood Range, Humboldt County, Nevada, was first prospected in the late 1800s for silver, copper, and gold; the first recorded mention of mining activity concerned a silver discovery. The September 17, 1874 edition of the Winnemucca Silver State notes that the Crystal Mining District was newly organized in the Fremont Range (as the Osgood Range was then called) to include discoveries of silver, lead, and antimony made on the Louisa claim. The name Crystal was derived from the plentiful quartz crystals found in-cavities near the prospects. This same area, occurring on the northwestern margin of the Osgood granodiorite stock, was later mined as the Richmond tungsten property, and crystals may still be found there in cavities in a massive garnet tactite. By 1878, how-ever, the name Crystal had been abandoned in favor of Potosi. The next flurry of activity in the Osgood Range was reported in 1899 when a copper strike on Granite Creek in the southern portion of the range received attention. The copper occukences were in a granite contact zone on the southeastern edge of the Osgood stock and, in 1916, the first tungsten in the district was discovered in the same deposit. During the last part of the nineteenth century, cattle and sheep were brought into the Kelly Creek Valley east of the Osgood Mountains by various ranchers. Alphonso and Adrian Bernard were among these ranchers, and in the first decade of the twentieth century, one of them recognized the altered rock where the Getchell Center it is now located. A 3-m (10-ft) deep prospect pit was dug on the outcrop, but the highest assay ran about $11/t ($10 per st). No further work was done on the gold-bearing rock. In 1934, Emmet Chase of Battle Mountain and Ed Knight of Golconda prospected in the area of the Bernard prospect pit and located several lode claims. At this time, Noble H. Getchell, a state senator, was looking for new mining opportunities to develop. He held interests in the Gold Circle Consolidated at Midas, which was becoming a losing venture. Chase and Knight brought their discovery to his attention, and he grubstaked them to prospect further in the area. In need of financial backing, Getchell solicited the help of George Wingfield, Sr., who held a minor interest in the Gold Circle. Wingfield was a successful banker and mine operator during the heyday of Tonopah and Goldfield, and he had become good friends with Henry C. Frick and Bernard Baruch. Wingfield let Baruch in on several very successful mining ventures in Goldfield, and Baruch returned the favor by underwriting the financing of the Getchell mine. Eleanor Roosevelt and Jack Dempsey were early stockholders in the Getchell operation. George Wingfield brought his brother-in-law, Roy A. Hardy, a consulting engineer who had constructed the American Flat mill near Virginia City, to look at the property. Upon inspecting the Chase-Knight claims, Hardy declared the whole area to be mineralized. A crosscut was driven to check the extent of the ore, and the results were better than anticipated. The locators were reportedly given $50,000 for the claims. The Getchell Mine, Inc., was organized on November 5, 1936. A small railroad that ran from Battle Mountain to Austin was purchased, and the ties and rails were moved to Getchell to be used in underground exploration. Enough reserves were found in the Center and South pit areas to construct a 40 t/d (44 stpd) mill. Binary and ternary alloys of uranium with transition metals were prepared with U2X stoichiometry. The compounds U2Tc, U2Rh, U2Os, and U2lr were formed by peritectic or peritectoid transformations, and were shown to be isostructural with U2Ru. The lattice constants are presented. Miscibility relationships obtained from the study of ternary alloys are graphically summarized in terms of an area-of-stability plot. The compound U2Re is not isostructural with either U2Ru or U2Mo. A series of compounds with stoichiometry U2X has been prepared in which X is technetium, rhodium, rhenium, osmium, or iridium. The only other U2X compounds, for which X is related to the above transition metals by proximity in the periodic table, are U2Mo and U2Ru. The structure of U2Mo is the tetragonal C11b type (MoSi2 type)1 and U2Ru is monoclinic, with a new structure type.' This investigation was undertaken to determine if any of the above compounds are isostructural with either U2Ru or U2Mo and to find the range of occurrence of these phases. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys were prepared from stoichiometric amounts of electrolytic uranium (99.99 pet pure) and transition metals of 99.5 pet purity (98+ pet pure Tc), by arc melting on a water-cooled copper hearth under an Ar-He atmosphere. Weight losses were negligible. The buttons were homogenized at temperatures between 700o and 800°C (900°C for U2Tc) in evacuated capsules and air-cooled. The X-ray powder specimens were annealed briefly at the temperature of homogenization. Except in the case of the technetium alloy, metallographic examination was used to determine the number of phases present. The radiation hazard involved in handling technetium precluded the use of metallography to examine U2Tc. The temperature and mode of formation of the U2X phases were determined by heating the metallographic specimens to successively higher temperatures, until examination indicated the presence of chilled liquid or a peritectoid transformation. RESULTS The U2X compounds investigated were found to be formed under the following conditions: UzTc unknown U2Ru peritectic 897o ± 3°C U2Rh peritectoid 755o ± 5°C U2Re peritectoid3 below 750°C Uas peritectic4 920°C U2Ir peritectoid 775o ± 5oC Debye-Scherrer patterns for the above U2X phases were made with CuKa radiation (nickel filter). The similarities in the positions and intensities of the strongest lines in the front-reflection region strongly suggested that U2Tc, U2Ru, U2Rh, U2Os, and U21r are isostructural with only minor differences in the unit-cell dimensions. The known lattice constants and intensities of the Debye-Scherrer rings for U2RU2 were used as a guide in order to index the low-angle X-ray reflections of the U2TC, U2Rh, U2Os, and U2Ir powder patterns. Approximate lattice constants for these compounds were thus obtained and were used along with the intensities observed for U2Ru to index the strongest lines in the back-reflection regions. A sin2 2? correction term was included and the lattice constants were refined and standard deviations estimated by least squares. Comparison of observed and calculated values of Q(= 4 sin2?/?2) used in these calculations are given in Table I. In each case when the positions of lines could not be resolved on the films they were not measured. Y., (communication to the Secretary *).-There are two points regarding gun erosion on which I want to say a few words: The first is about the analogy to hardening of wire by drawing and the second the possible role played by thermal conductivity of the metal. The ductile metals do not necessarily become brittle when cold-worked as it is possible to draw copper from 3. in. in diameter soft rod down to the finest hair wire without annealing. This results, as stated in the paper, informing a hardened core with a very hard skin. The electrical conductivity is depressed some 3 per cent. and the tensile strength nearly tripled. A soft copper wire 0.08 in. in diameter and 6 in. long may be twisted 150 or more turns before the wire will snap under torsion. A hard-drawn wire will break after perhaps a dozen twists, the skin breaking down at one spot. Just wiping the wire with a cloth clamp with dilute nitric acid has a remarkable effect in increasing the number of twists without appreciably lowering the tensile strength, showing the skin to be very thin. On the other hand, pickling the rod, from which the wire is to be drawn, in dilute nitric acid also greatly increases the number of twists which can be applied to the resulting wire. This indicates that the copper oxide scale produced when the wire bar is rolled hot is more or less rolled into the rod and may have much to do with the skin effect. We also know that if the conditions of drawing are not correct, the heat of deformation in the die may produce quite an annealing effect. The application of this analogy to what occurs in a gun to produce the effects noted offers some difficulty. The second point is that as the temperature of the surface of the gun bore has undoubtedly a great deal to do with the amount of erosion, one natural remedy would be to conduct the heat away fast enough to keep this temperature within desired limits. This brings up the question of the thermal conductivity of the metal of which the gun is made. We know that the conductivity of pure metals is greatly altered by alloying and that the alloy is usually, though not always, lower in conductivity than the metal before alloying. This is interesting when it is considered that the high-nickel and manganese-steel alloys show greater erosion as stated. Would it not be instructive to study the question from the point of view of heat conducted away from the eroded surface?

Book Review MEXICO UNDER CARRANZA. By Thomas E. Gibbon, Los Angeles, California. Doubleday Page and Co., New York, 1919, 270 pp., 711/2 X 5 in. $1.50. A vivid, accurate, convincing summing up of the Mexican problem as it confronts us today, devoid of sensationalism or bigotry. A compelling narrative of the relations of the Carranza Government and our own from Oct. 15, 1915, when it was recognized as the de facto government of Mexico, to the present time. It shows the absolute lack of promises kept or lived up to either with its own people or the United States. This is not done by invective or the indiscriminate use of adjectives but by quoting from the instruments on record on both sides of the case. The driving of the Red Cross out of Mexico, which condemned many of the native peons to starvation, and the interference with the Pershing Punitive Expedition are merely mentioned, but the crying crime against the Mexican people, who have sunk to unbelievable depths of misery obscured, but not exceeded, by the sufferings in Europe, is held up in a clarified light. Two illuminating chapters are devoted to the character and treatment of foreign investments in Mexico, Which are a complete refutation of the common statement that Mexico has been exploited remorselessly by the foreign investor. The conces-sions given by Diaz in the days of his regime most condemned are nowise as large nor the land grants as extensive nor the title so absolute as those granted to the railroad builders of our own transcontinental systems and other of our nationally subsidized works. This is not left to further argument but is settled by quoting the various official instruments and not at all in a tedious way. The author's concluding chapter is a picture of the Mexican people from Aztec times, when they had reached a civilization which gave them a better calendar than the Roman Empire ever had until modern times, to their present unhappy and pitiful condition. He concludes, basing his findings on parallel historical downfalls of a once proud people, that present conditions are the natural result of the absolute domination of an alien minority. He grants, of course, that there are many estimable Latin-Mexicans of integrity, ability and charm, but maintains that the dominant minority has continually degraded in fulfillment of the sociological law that the sure revenge of the servile class is found in the corruption of the master class. The book is replete with historical and literary allusions which, added to the pleasing style of the accomplished author, make fascinating the account of one of the world's great tragedies. Mr. Gibbon is a lawyer who has spent much time in Mexico and shows an understanding of the native people not shared by all writers on the Mexican problem. A distinct addition to all literature on the subject. P. E. B.

Temperature dependence of the rate of recovery in zinc single crystals after a simple shear deformation at low temperature was investigated. Some tentative suggestions regarding the annealed and strain-hardened states of a crystal are discussed. RECOVERY may be defined as the gradual return of the mechanical and physical properties of strain-hardened metal to those characteristic of the annealed material; an increase in temperature increases the rate of recovery. The annealing process in strain-hardened polycrystalline metals is complicated by the inhomogeneity of strain which always exists in aggregates. Polygonization in bent regions of the crystals and growth of new almost strain-free grains starting at points of severe local distortion1-:' make it almost impossible to isolate and study the recovery process. Homogeneously strained single crystals, however, do not polygonize or re-crystallize and hence they can be used advantageously to study recovery. In such crystals strain hardening is completely removed by recovery alone. Since recovery is a process whereby certain lattice disturbances introduced by plastic flow are gradually reduced, a knowledge of the rate and temperature dependence of this process for various conditions of prestrain might be helpful in formulating a model of the strain-hardened state. For simplicity it seemed desirable to limit the type of prestrain to the simplest obtainable, i.e., simple shear strain. In the experiments to be described, recovery was studied by observing changes in the stress-strain curve of prestrained zinc single crystals held for various times at temperatures above that employed for straining. Single crystals were grown from the melt by a modified Bridgeman technique from Horse Head Special zinc 99.99 pct pure, and from spectrographically pure zinc 99.999 pct pure. They were grown as 1 in. diameter spheres and acid-machined' to the final specimen contour. The test section was a cylinder about 1/8 in. high and 3/4 in. in diameter. The conical sections adjacent to the test section were cemented into the grips so the load could be transmitted to the crystal as uniformly as possible. The specimens were oriented so that in testing the maximum shear stress was applied along one of the slip directions, [2110], in the (0001) plane. Details of the production and testing of such specimens have been presented.' Each test was carried out according to the following schedule: 1—The crystal was strained at — 50°C until it reached a maximum shear stress, ,,,. The strain rate was approximately 5 pct per min in all cases. 2—After straining, the crystal was unloaded before the temperature was changed. Unloading required about 3 min. 3—The temperature of the specimen was then increased from — 50°C to the temperature, T, of recovery. This change in temperature was completed in a time of less than 2 min. The specimen remained at temperature, T, for a time, t, which differed for the various specimens. 4—Thereafter the temperature was again reduced to — 50 °C in approximately 3 min. 5—While at —50°C, the stress-strain curve after recovery was obtained. 6—The specimen was then unloaded and annealed for 1 hr at 375 °C in a helium atmosphere to bring about complete recovery. Cooling to room temperature after anneal required 90 min. 7—The same crystal could be re-used for another test because the plastic properties after annealing closely duplicated those of the original crystal. The specimen was immersed during the test in a bath of methyl alcohol which, through a system of tubes, could be pumped through either of two heat exchangers to regulate the temperature; this was accomplished by circulating the liquid through coils immersed in a bath of acetone and dry ice for cooling or in a bath of warm water for heating. Test temperatures were thus maintained constant within ±1°C. The — 50°C temperature was low enough so that no measurable recovery occurred during unloading and reloading. The stress-strain curve continued after recovery along a path below, but approximately parallel to, the path of a curve obtained in an uninterrupted test. THE writer's first experience with a nonferrous reduction plant of great magnitude was at the Washoe reduction works of Anaconda some 35 years ago. Here was a plant which had been planned with remarkable skill and foresight considering the time and the state of development of copper-plant practice in the year 1902. The designer utilized topography to fullest extent to provide proper sequence of operations and, what is most remarkable, to leave adequate space for future developments, most of which at that time were unknown. However, the practice then was to locate the various units of the reduction works at the most advantageous points of the existing terrain with little regard for tramming or other auxiliaries and then connect these various units by the essential trackage, conveyor systems, piping, etc., as the need developed. This occasionally led to undesirable track arrangements, sharp curves, and steep grades, especially when it became necessary to extend various portions of the plant. Conveyor systems also became rather complicated, running as they did at various angles, and such items as piping and electrical distribution were often found to be in the wrong place, entirely inadequate in size, or awkwardly arranged for any kind of extension. This condition was not peculiar to Anaconda, for all copper plants at that time were built in the same manner and it was the constant association with these difficulties which, in the year 1925, influenced the layout of the Andes Copper Mining Co. plant. In that plant all trackage was laid out straight and level, all conveyors at right angles to each other with minimum length and number of transfers. All buildings were placed parallel and the main structures were complete for all purposes so that auxiliary buildings and dog houses would not be added later. Piping and electrical work was provided for in the original layout and carefully designed to avoid additions and alterations, and careful study given to every movement of material throughout the entire plant so that it would be accomplished with the least possible effort. Naturally it was hardly expected to attain all these objectives perfectly but our efforts did succeed in creating a plant which was unique and outstanding for its time-1927. It was also most gratifying to find that these design principles contributed to considerable savings starting right in the drafting room, carrying through the construction and ultimately yielding savings in operations and manpower. Not only that, but such a plant gives the observer an impression of symmetry and order, is more attractive to the workmen, and unquestionably eliminates many accident hazards. However, the Andes plant buildings were fitted to the existing terrain instead of having terrain created to fit the buildings-an item which we found advantageous to correct on the next large plant. At Morenci in 1939, all of the desirable features of the Andes plant such as parallel buildings, etc., were incorporated; but we went one step further-power shovels were brought in to make the terrain fit the reduction works. The result at Morenci is well-known and needs no elaboration here, but the success achieved by the design methods used for this and previous plants naturally influenced and guided the layout of the Chuquicamata sulphide plant which is the largest yet conceived. Chuquicamata Plant Design At Chuquicamata several factors not encountered previously complicated the problem to a great extent. The most desirable location for the smelter would allow smelter gases to blow directly into the open-pit mine already producing 60,000 tons of oxide ore per day and employing 1550 men. This, of course, would be a serious condition and, therefore, we were forced to move the smelter to a less desirable location but followed our previous experience at Morenci and made the terrain fit the job. The most difficult problem, however, was the provision for receiving various types of ore both by rail and conveyor. These consisted of: 1-Sulphide-bearing residue from the stockpile from which oxide copper had previously been leached. 2-Sulphide-bearing residue coming direct from the leaching vats. 3-Sulphide ore crushed at the existing crushing plants and hauled to the concentrator in cars. 4-Sulphide ore from the new crushing plant adjacent to the concentrator. 5-Sulphide ore obtained
