Mining of the red iron ores of the Birmingham district has been carried on energetically during the past 60 years, and their development has created a large iron and steel manufacturing center, the only important one in the South. The district produces approximately 10 per cent. of all the iron ore of the United States (80 per cent. of the Alabama ore mined is red ore); also, 40 of the 400 blast furnaces of the country are in the district tributary to Birmingham. The rapid growth of the district has been made possible through investigations that resulted in radical changes in furnace practice, and a still greater impetus will come from the study of the low-grade, high-silica ores, as a result on which they will be made amenable to treatment by concentration. Mining practice in this district has been comparatively simple because of the occurrence of the ore; but with the rapid extension of the workings and the disturbed condition of the ore bed at some distance from the outcrop, more difficult conditions are encountered and the tendency is toward worse rather than better conditions. Should the high-silica ores of the lower bench of the Big Seam become available through beneficiation, mining practice will have to be modified to meet the new conditions, which will be rendered more difficult by the increased weight of cover that will exist at considerable distances from the outcrop. Support of workings will require greater attention and the efficient and economical operation of the mines will depend largely on the successful solution of the problems of working and handling the ore. History and EaRly Development The first explorers of the coal and mineral lands of Alabama were blacksmiths and mechanics mustered out of the army after the war of 1812. These men recognized the red rock of the Birmingham district as iron ore, and utilized it in making cooking utensils and farm implements. The first blast furnace was built and operated at Russellville in 1818, where also was a foundry and rolling mill. Soft ore was used at that time, but, in 1864, the first red hematite ore of Red Mountain was smelted, near Irondale. The subject of Egypt, to use the words of perhaps the second of modern writers on the subject [Deodat. de Dolomieu, in Observations sur la Physique, etc., January, 1793, vol. xlii., pp. 41+, 108+; Abbe Rozier, J. A. Mongez, and J. C. Delametherie, Paris], is one which strongly excites our interest, and everything relating to it demands our respect. "Thus," he continues, "the Greeks appeared to the Romans," ..." thus Egypt appeared to the Greeks, and thus all three appear to us." This writer, in the three parts of the memoire given above, speaks of Norden as the modern pioneer of Egypt, and does not seem to have made original observations himself; nevertheless he seems to have rendered the same service to his authority that Playfair not very long afterward rendered Hutton. The limitations of a paper will permit little else than citations, but these are so numerous that, unless much compressed, they would supply a chapter of moderate size. The object of refining copper in the reverberatory furnace is to obtain a metal which will have the highest attainable degree of malleability, ductility and electric conductivity, and present at the same time a level surface when it solidifies in the mold after casting. These desirable physical properties are governed by the character of the impurities and the forms in which they are present, by the amount of cuprous oxide retained by the copper, by the quantity of gas held in solid solution, by the casting-temperature, and by the thickness of the casting. The effects of impurities, of cuprous oxide and of gases upon the mechanical properties of copper have been studied by Hampe1 in his classical paper " Colitributions to the Metallurgy of Copper." The most recent research into the effect of metals upon the electrical conductivity of copper is that of Addicks. 2 The influence of cuprous oxide upon the electrical conductivity has been investigated by Walker3 and Addick. 4 The absorption of gases has received attention by Hampe: Stah16 and Heyn 7 The effects of casting-temperature have been noted by Stahl.8

THE copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment,, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Miniére du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi. PRINCE LEOPOLD MINE The Kipushi ore body fills a fault vein and invades the wall rocks more or less extensively by metasomatic replacement. The vein strikes north-northeast and south-southwest and dips to the west. The variable dip averages 60ºto a depth of 300 ft., and more uniformly 80º below 400 ft. In the upper section the average width is 200 ft. and below the width is about 150 ft. The length of the ore body is 2300 feet. In the summer and fall of 1875, the author was present during a short smelting campaign at the Hall Valley works, and having had occasion to make a number of chemical analyses of the ores, fuel, and fluxes, deems that the results of the same, and also an account of the smelting operations, may be found of interest to members of the Institute. The mines and reduction works of the Hall Valley Silver—Lead Mining and Smelting Company (limited) are situated at Hall Valley, Park County, Colorado. The smelting works are located about half way from the mouth to the head of the above-named valley, and the mines high up on the mountains, near its head. The three principal mines of the company are the Whale, Leftwick, and Coldspring. They are all on different veins, running parallel to one another, with a general trend from southwest and northeast. The

E. A. HOLBROOK,*Urbana, Ill.-To those who have followed the development of powdered coal two questions often occur. First, as to the moisture in the coal. In Illinois we recognize that the bituminous coals contain about 12 to 15 per cent. of what we call "contained moisture," that is, the moisture is present in the coal although this may appear absolutely dry and dusty. In addition, the surface moisture may be present in any amount. I would like to ask what is the relative effect of these two forms of moisture upon the work of pulverizing. Does Mr. Collins refer to the contained moisture or to the surface moisture in estimating the degree to which the coal must be dried? H. R. COLLINS.-In the lignite coals, of which this country possesses a great deal and is beginning to develop them to considerable extent, the "contained" or "combined" moisture does not .trouble us; we have no difficulty in reducing lignites to a high degree of fineness. But when dealing with bituminous, sub-bituminous, or semi-bituminous, we, prefer to reduce the combined moisture as well as the hydroscopic moisture as far as possible. We have recently put into operation, at a plant, furnaces and boilers consuming the lignite from northern New Mexico, which contains between 4 and 5 per cent. moisture as we pulverize and burn it. The evaporating efficiencies under the boilers have been so remarkable that we wish to check the results half a dozen times before quoting them. We have also just started two boilers at the Garfield smelter, and have obtained the same high efficiencies.

This investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. Henry M. Howe, of the Department of Metallurgy, Columbia University, who, in a letter to the author, dated October 23, 1900, wrote as follows, suggesting the subject of this dissertation : "The extraction of silver from copper mattes by either the Ziervogel or the Augustin process depends upon converting the silver into silver sulphate by means of the sulphuric anhydride evolved from the decomposition of ferrous sulphate and cupric sulphate, which are formed during the roasting operation itself from the iron and copper sulphides present. "It occurred to me, some time prior to the autumn of 1897, that these processes might be made much easier by adding to them, at the proper stage, ferrous or cupric sulphate, or both, in the form of green or blue vitriol. That is, instead of having to rely solely on our ability to generate these sulphates in this very delicate roasting operation, my idea was that we could add a small quantity of already-prepared sulphate at the proper state of roasting, viz., at or before the period when the solphatizing of the silver occurs. The comprehensive audit of the accounts of a mining company is extremely important in its relations to the legal situation and obligations of the corporation, the personal liability of the directors, and the interests of the investing public. A consideration of the subject as affecting the professional duties and fixing the responsibility of a mining engineer engaged in the expert examination of a mine or in charge of mining operations, is equally important, though this phase of the question is not often presented systematically.

But little has been written concerning the camp of Republic. In 1900 Chatard and Whitehead 1 reported the results of some experiments with samples of ore from the Republic mine, and a few years later Fritz Cirkel2 described the construction, operation, and results attained in the mill at the Mountain Lion mine. From time to time brief articles, mostly of a semi-technical nature, have appeared in the Engineering and Mining Journal and other mining periodicals. The general geology of the camp, especially in regard.to its areal features, has recently been ably described by Joseph B. Umpleby.3 To bring to mind the general features of the district it may perhaps be well to review briefly some facts in regard to it, before discussing the treatment of the ore. I. History and Production. The town of Republic is situated in the NW. corner of Ferry county, about 25 miles south of the International Boundary, on the head-waters of the San Poi1 river, in what was formerly the " north-half" of the Colville Indian reservation. On Washington's birthday, 1896, this portion of the reservation was thrown open to mineral location, and within a few weeks important discoveries had been made. The present Eureka mining-district was organized, the camp grew apace, and consignments of ore were shipped by wagon to Grand Forks, 30 miles away; or to Marcus, a somewhat greater distance. THE problem at the Morning mill is to separate the galena, which contains a great percentage of the silver, from the sphalerite, making each into a commercial product. The ore as received from the nine is dumped into hopper-bottomed bins of 1200 tons capacity. These are divided into five sections, the first section being the regularly used section and the re-mainder used as a reserve bin. The ore is first passed through a 9 by 15-in. Blake jaw-crusher with an opening of 4 in. This allows a ham-mer head to pass through without damage. The crusher discharges to a conveyor that delivers the ore into a two-section punched-plate trommel screen with 1 ½ and 2-in. openings. The undersize is carried by means of conveyors to the mill bins. The oversize passes over a shaking feeder and through a spray or high-pressure water to a picking-belt, where waste and crude ore is hand-sorted. About 4 per cent of the ore by weight is picked out as waste, assaying about 0.6 per cent lead, and this is discarded over the dump. About 4 per cent of the ore by weight is removed as crude ore, assaying 10 oz. silver, 30 per cent lead, and S per cent zinc, and is shipped direct to the smelter. The remainder of the oversize from the picking-belt is con-veyed to a 4-ft. Symons cone crusher with 1-in. opening, which is interesting as a new introduction in this dis-trict. The machine consumes approximately 40 hp. and the pinion shaft travels 555 r.p.m. The horsepower is rather high, but the machine has an extraordinarily large capacity, and, due to the unique construction, there is no danger of tramp steel causing any damage, as in that case the discharge "opening" is automatically

The failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement; therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable, easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem involves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,' which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements can be made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard mortars. Discussion of the paper of THOMAS F. DONNELLY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1759 to 1768. F. (communication to the Secretary *).-The paper is of value in giving the public some first-hand information regarding a copper property that from various causes has attracted considerable attention, especially in Philadelphia, and which has also been the source of several fantastic flotations that had little to recommend them. Since 1906, no work has been done on this property under my direction, with the exception of a topographic survey made last winter by Mr. Donnelly, which was intended as the first step in a sound and logical system of development. From 1906 to 1915, desultory attempts were made to develop these orebodies, but as the work was not in competent hands much money was wasted and even more disappeared in ways regarding which it is perhaps not best to inquire. The result is, this interesting property has now practically no more ore developed upon it than in 1906, despite the fact that a new 100-ton mill is being erected, although, as I have intimated, it is today not much more than a prospect. Turning now to the scientific and more agreeable side of the subject, it is interesting to note that these Santo Domingo copper ores are invariably found in volcanic tuffs and that, in a geologic sense, they are all very old, for there are no evidences of recent volcanic activity in the greater Antilles, of which this island is the second largest. The existence of copper in tuffs in different parts of the world is a notable fact. Often, if not usually, it is present in mere traces, but not infrequently we find it in sufficient amount to be of economic importance. Thus, for example, chalcopyrite and bornite occur in the Tertiary tuffs of Japan, and a number of producing copper mines of that country are either actually in, or closely associated with, rocks of this character. Whether the copper minerals are original primary ores in the tuffs, or were derived from accompanying eruptive dikes, appears not yet to have been determined in any instance. In most of the Japanese cases of which I can find any record the tuffs appear to be associated with shales and limestones. These Japanese copper ores also carry some gold, especially in the upper parts of the veins; in this they resemble the Santo Domingo deposits which not infrequently carry as much as $6 or $7 per ton of gold on the outcrop. INTRODUCTION Porphyry copper deposits have been reported from the Caribbean area by Pease (1966), Cox, et al. (1973), Guild (1974), Kesler, et al. (1975), and others. This chapter summarizes the most widely known characteristics of those deposits. Only one deposit that conceivably can be classed as a porphyry copper occurrence is in production (Pueblo Viejo, Dominican Republic), but others are known whose tonnage and grade are of economic interest. Deposits in this province may be classified as copper-gold or copper-molybdenum types (Kesler, 1972), but deposits associated with quartz-rich plutons that have high Na2O:K2O and high gold:copper but low molybdenum: copper ratios dominate. Porphyry copper occurrences are reported in the literature from Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Cuba. Only the porphyry copper deposits from Puerto Rico are extensively described in the literature; consequently the Caribbean porphyry copper province in general is not as well documented as the southern Cordilleran orogen. Because past published technical descriptions are incomplete, some data presented here are new to the literature. The Caribbean includes the island arcs between North and South America. Porphyry copper occurrences are known from the Greater Antilles, the generally east-west trending group of islands that lies south of North America. Fig. 48, therefore, only covers the Greater Antilles portion of the Caribbean. Porphyry copper deposits in this area are not described by the Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model in details of metallization (general paucity of molybdenum), alteration (scarcity of orthoclase), or petrography (preponderance of quartz diorite). Therefore, this model should be modified to include deposits associated with quartz-bearing plutons such as those found in the Caribbean. In the Meme deposit on Haiti ore occurs in skarn adjacent to the quartz diorite phase of a composite quartz monzonite-granodio-rite-quartz diorite pluton (Kesler, 1968). This deposit, with a K-Ar 66 m.y. date, is not included in Fig. 48 as a porphyry copper deposit because metallization is restricted largely to the intruded rocks. Although the intrusive rocks at the Meme deposit may contain sulfide near skarn contacts they are otherwise essentially unaltered. Porphyry molybdenum deposits as defined by Clarke (1972) have not been reported in the Caribbean area.

The State of Nevada, known par excellence as " the Silver State," occupies the major portion of the wide plateau, or so-called Great Basin, lying between the Sierra Nevada range on the west and the Wahsatch range of the Rocky Mountains on the east. It extends from the 114th degree to the 120th degree of longitude, west of Greenwich. It is limited, on the north, by the 42d degree of latitude, and on the extreme south by the 35th degree of latitude. Its general shape is that of an irregular parallelogram, from which the lower or southwestern portion has been cut off by a diagonal southeasterly line; the missing portion forms a part of the State of California on the west. The Great Basin is made up of a succession of low hills, or minor mountain ranges, running very nearly north and south, with long valleys between them. All of these mountains are more or less metalliferous. On the westcrn rim, marking the eastern flank or foothills of the Sierra, we find granites, porphyries, and propylites. Here we note the great Comstock lode, with its free-milling gold and silver ores, and still further south the once prominent and the now reviving gold and silver-bearing districts of Esmeralda County, Nevada, and of Morro County, California. Next, at some distance to the east, we find the mining districts at and near Unionville, in Humboldt County.
