Every one connected with a mine knows that it is hard to keep down the costs of moving ore from the place where it is broken to the shaft or portal. Considered broadly, the subject of handling would cover all work done in a mine, but here it has been limited to handling ore in stopes and drifts, through chutes, and on levels. Good ventilation and a strict enforcement of rules for the prevention of dust safeguard the health of the men and lower transportation costs. Handling ORe in Stopes and Drifts The object of all stoping is to mine ore of good grade at low cost. In Butte, most of the ore is mined, from veins dipping from 60° to the horizontal to those which are vertical, by means of square-set, rill, timbered-rill, and back-filling stopes. When blasted, a part of the rock is carried by gravity to the grizzlies over the chutes, the rest is shoveled. Rock, when broken in a stope, may be deflected by inclined floors or slides toward the top of a chute leading to the level below. Ore broken clean enough to ship should be carried, by the force of its fall, into a chute or.as nearly into that chute as the safety of the stope and the men permits. Ore that requires sorting, about 80 per cent. of all ore mined, is caught on a grizzly and the waste picked out. Waste rock broken in a stope is used to fill that stope and should be blasted into the gob with as little handling as possible. About two-thirds of all the ore mined in Butte comes from square-set stopes; this method was used in nearly all cases until 1912, when the rill method of stoping was introduced in the Tramway mine, of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The shoveling and timbering costs in square-set stopes are high when compared with the costs in the rill stopes. All the ore cannot be carried to the chute, in falling from place, unless the chutes are very close together or the distance from the back of the stope to the top of the chute is sufficient to slide all the ore broken. Andre Hubaux: In the writer's opinion, more stress should be put on field and microscope observations, as J. L. Gillson does. His discovery of relics of big labra-dorite feldspars from the Marcy anorthosite in all the other rocks is proof enough that previous field observations have been inadequate. The writer's field experience with anorthositie massifs is limited to the Egersund-Sogndal district in southern Norway; however, this is a very large and well exposed area. It seems to have so many points in common with the Adirondack region that a detailed comparison should be beneficial. This comparison was not possible 20 years ago, owing to the scarcity of geological data, at least for Norway. Both regions are now far better known—the Norway district because of the work of Professors Bugge and Barth 33-35 and especially because of the extensive field and microscopic research of P. Michot,30-35 who introduced me in the field to the problems of that region. In a particular unit of the Egersund district, a sodi-fication of the plagioclase, very similar to what Gillson calls "andesinization," has taken place. 12' The percentage of anorthite in the plagioclase has dropped from 42 to 43 pct in the original norite down to 27 pct, but never below that level. This metasomatical transformation is a part of a whole series of processes of mig-matitization which have produced, above the level of granitization, concentrations of Mg, Fe, and Ti and among them, patches and parallel bands of ilmenite and magnetite. Thus both regions present somewhat comparable features and the theories to explain them have several points in common. However, as there seem to be differences between some American conceptions and the views commonly accepted at the University of Liege, I would like to make some comments about J. L. Gill-son's article. The author speaks of the garnet as being an anti-stress mineral. Statistical studies have been carried out on structural geological data collected across a large zone of roof failure 600 m (1968 ft) wide and at least 800 m (2642 ft) long in the Greta coal seam at Aberdare East Colliery. Two swarms of hundreds of minor, normal faults with throws commonly between 3 and 300 mm in the room and pillar workings are broadly coincident with roof failure. The faults have been classified into dip slip and oblique and strike slip types. Roof conditions have been classified into good; troublesome with subclasses scaly, heavy, gutter falls and wide, flat-roofed falls; and severely failed with subclasses very heavy roof, gutter falls and dome falls. Troublesome conditions are defined as those in which the height of the fall is less than or equal to 0.3 m, and severely failed conditions as those in which the fall height is greater than 0.3 m. Comparison of faults, roof condition and mining rate on a shift basis indicates that faults and roof failure are much more important than machine breakdowns in reducing mining rate. The effect of faults on roof conditions has been quantified using a concept called the "zone of influence," a rectangular area around a fault in which the fault has potentially deleterious effects. The spatial comparison of fault "zones of influence" with areas of roof failure wing Spearman's rank correlation coefficient shows that, while normal dip slip faults do not appear to be associated with roof failure, oblique slip and strike slip faults appear to be associated with roof classed as severely failed. The "zone of influence" of an oblique slip fault may extend up to 3 m on each side of it in the headings and up to 1.14 m in the cut-throughs. The fault "zone of influence" has geomechanical implications for the design of mine openings and Possibly represents the maximum length of a cantilevered roof beam likely to fail during mining, owing to a fault. Roof conditions could Possibly be predicted in blocks of &gin coal if the type of fault could be identified in oriented drill cores.

VERSATILITY is perhaps the outstanding characteristic of the subject of this sketch. He is author, golf-player, musician, public speaker, philatelist, German scholar, and has been a school teacher; but these are incidental. Oliver Ralston's professional forte might be described as beneficiating solid minerals and he has dealt in an important way with practically all of them. To this work he has brought a fertile mind stimulated by keen imagination but kept on the track by a sense of economic balance. An indication of his versatility is evidenced by his career with the Bureau of Mines, which he first joined in 1912, when the Bureau was just one year old. Except for two excursions into industry-Hooker Electro Chemical Co. (1917-20) and United Verde Copper Co. (1928 to 1935)-his entire professional career has been with the Bureau.

Allotropic transformations in cerium have been studied by dilatometric, resistometric, X-ray diffraction, and metallographic techniques. The dilatometric study indicated that, on cooling below O°C, the high-temperature fcc phase, y, transforms partly to the hexagonal phase, ß, and, on further cooling, to the collapsed fcc phase, a. The amount of $ phase present at room temperature is increased by repeated cycling through the a-y transformation. It has been shown metallograPhically that the y-ß transformation has many characteristics of a martensitic transformation. In contrast to the y-ß transformation the ?-a transformation does not give the manifestation of a shear transformation. Small cellular ? domains of random shape and size collapse to a in a short time with no apparent coordination with neighboring domains. The considerable confusion in the literature over the existence of more than one high-temperature fcc phase is discussed. Two such phases have been reported in the literature and an attempt is made in this study to clarify the situation. Twelve fcc and two hcp structures have been shown to be easily reproduced or eliminated. It is proposed that the two "additional" allotropes reported in the literature and fourteen of the phases detected here are not allotropes of cerium but are due to contamination. CERIUM exists in several allotropic forms, but there is some disagreement over what the forms are. Furthermore, the conditions favoring the presence of a particular allotrope and the nature of the transformations from one form to another are uncertain. The objectives of this research were 1) to ascertain the allotropic forms of cerium, 2) to establish the conditions under which the allotropes exist, 3) to study the effects of annealing and thermal cycling on the allotropic transformations, and 4) to study the transformation mechanisms. Dilatometric, resistometric, metallographic, and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed. The form of cerium commonly found at room temperature is fcc and is designated ?. A complex hexagonal phase, 8, forms when y is cooled to slightly below room temperature. At still lower temperatures the y fcc structure transforms to an fcc form with a much smaller lattice parameter, termed a cerium. A bcc form, 6, which exists just below the melting point (800°C), will not be considered further in this work. There is a substantial body of experimental evidence (reviewed by Gschneidnerl) which favors the acceptance of these four allotropes, though some investigators have tried unsuccessfully to observe the ß hexagonal form.'-' There is disagreement, however, over the phase-transformation temperatures, due, in part, to broad hysteresis and overlapping of the transformations between the a, ß, and ? forms. The transformations are also sensitive to prior thermal and mechanical treatment. The differing purity of cerium used by different investigators is undoubtedly a factor. Cerium is difficult to separate from other elements and is quite reactive, igniting spontaneously when it is filed in air. The highest purity of cerium to date is reported to contain several hundred parts per million by weight of impurities, and early investigations were carried out on cerium containing several percent of impurities. There have been reports of more than one fcc allotrope at room temperature. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald5 obtained diffraction patterns of an fcc phase with a lattice parameter about 1 pct less than that of the ? phase, instead of the y phase, on slowly cooling cerium filings from 23° to -198°C and warming them back to room temperature. However, when the sample was heated to 447°C and cooled to room temperature it consisted of only the ? phase. They have designated this new fcc phase "a-? intermediate", and say it is quite sensitive to impurities. After prolonged high-temperature treatment of a powder specimen, Weiner and Raynor2 obtained a diffraction pattern of an fcc phase of lattice parameter about 1 pct less than the ? phase. This they called the y' phase. It could not be reconverted to the y phase and is claimed to be different from the a-? intermediate phase.5,6 Dialer and Rothe3 reported two fcc phases* after cycling their powder specimens between room temperature and -192°C. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald5 suggested that one of the fcc structures obtained by Dialer and Rothe was equivalent to their "a-? intermediate" phase. The "frac" method of well stimulation has been applied successfully to all producing formations in the Permian Basin area. During the five years since its development, many changes and improvements have been made in treating materials. procedures, and equipie11t. A number of fluid carrying agents, having different physica1 and chemical properties, have been developed to meet variorus well requirements. The current trend is toward larger gallonage treatments, employing higher injection rates. The use of "down-the-casing" techniques has greatly reduced high surface working pressures, attributable to friction losses resulting from injection throrugh tubing. Petrographic studies of various Permian Basin formations, coordinated with laboratory and well log data, have been found a valuable guide in planning frac treat111o1t.s. A knowledge of the extent (and orientation of naturally occurring fractures and planes of weakness in the formation, aid in predicting the ultimate drainage pattern resulting from the frac treatment. INTRODUCTION The South Permian Basin covers an area in Wcst Texas and New Mexico about onc-half the size of the state of Texas, This vast region has been called the "Permian Basin" for so long that the term will he used here. It includes an area south of the Matador Arch. approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. Structural features of importance within the basin are the Northwest Shelf, Eastern Platform, Midland Basin, Central Basin Platform, and Delaware Basin. The principal producing formations include sand, limestone and dolo-mite, with lesser amounts of shale, anhydrite. chert. and various silicates. All of the producing formations in the Permian Basin have responded to some type of frac treatment. Essentially, a frac treatment may be defined as the injection, into a formation. of a fluid carrying agent containing a particulated solid (usually sand), for the purpose of increasing production. The application of this method of well stimulation to many differing Permian Basin reservoirs has necessitated numerous changes and improvements in carrying agents, solids, service equipment. well equipment. and treating techniques. CARRYING AGENTS A number of different types of fluid carrying agents have been developed since the introduction of the frac method of well stimulation. These agents have different physical and chemical properties, and in many cases the extent of production increase derived from the frac treatment depends on the choice of fluid carrier. Unfortunately, due to many different systems of nomenclature used in the oil field, these differences are not always recognized by the oil Operator. THE national interest prompts consideration of any new source of mineral wealth even though the immediate need may be of minor importance. A critical shortage of potash in the United States during the World War of I9I4-I8 stimulated broad development, which established an American potash industry on a basis so sound that this commodity is not even listed as urgent in the present war program. However, this should not minimize its importance, and the need remains, not only for adequate supplies of the usual potash salts (the chloride and the sulphate) but of all potash chemicals. Potassium carbonate (known commercially as pearl ash) has been a high-cost commodity; in consequence, the quantity used by industry has been relatively small. By a combination of fortuitous geographical circumstances, there is opportunity to produce a low-cost potassium carbonate with the possibility that this might become an important source of chemical potash. The following paper considers a recently developed process1 taking advantage of these conditions. WYOMINGITE DEPOSIT For many years it has been known that a deposit of potash-bearing igneous rock known as wyomingite occurs in the southwestern part of Wyoming at Zirkel Mesa, which is 44 miles northeast of the town of Green River (Fig. I). The western escarpment of this deposit is about 3 miles east of the Superior Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. This mesa alone covers approximately 3300 acres, and the average thickness of the wyomingite flow is 75 ft. It has been estimated2 that about one billion tons of wyomingite occur in this one deposit, all of which can be mined by open quarrying without overburden. In addition, there are several smaller deposits within 10 miles, so that the aggregate wyomingite in the area approaches two billion tons. This is one of the world's largest sources of leucite, and the only known deposit of its kind in the United States. The wyomingite (which is in the form of a lava flow and numerous small craters), with the mineral leucite as its most important component, has a mineral composition3 of: leucite, 50 per cent; phlogopite, 15; diopside, I2; kataphorite, 15; glass and apatite, 8. The phlogopite is present in visible phenocrysts 1/8 to 1/2 in. in diameter, but the leucite usually is almost microcrystalline and not capable of liberation by grinding. Chemically, the wyomingite has a potash content averaging slightly higher than eleven per cent K20. The potash is mainly in the leucite, but part of it is in the phlogopite and a small amount is in the feldspars that are occasionally seen as undigested occlusions of the granite country rock, through which the leucite-bearing lava intruded, and as sanidine feldspar both in the crystalline and glassy phases of the rock. SCANDINAVIAN countries seem somehow to furnish an amount of talent and leadership far be- yond their population and among them Sweden is possibly at the top. The United States has many eminent citizens born in the latter, country or who are of Swedish descent and the engineers may claim their full share. In fact, the number is so large that a flourishing Swedish-American Engineering Society has been formed, including a number of A. I. M. E. members. Dr. Waldemar Lindgren is more scientist than engineer, though his work in economic geology has contributed directly to the development of many mines, and he is the valued- adviser of a number of our larger companies. Probably he, himself, values most highly the contributions he has been able to make to scientific theories of the occurrence and genesis of ore deposits. His fellow scientists have placed upon these the high mark of approval by electing him to the National Academy of Sciences, and Princeton University in 1916 recognized his position by conferring on him the degree of Doctor of Science.

COAL is produced, in commercial quantities, in thirty-five of the sty-five counties of West Virginia. Oil and gas are produced, commercially, in forty-two counties. So, you may readily see that coal, oil and gas are closely related as to production areas. Many of the West Virginia coal mines are studded with oil and gas wells, as drilling has been done in thirty-two of the coal bearing counties. When the drilling of oil and gas wells was placed under the regulatory control of the Department of Mines on June I, 1929, it was estimated, by the State Geological Survey, that 64,000 wells had been drilled in West Virginia and that 34,mo wells were then being operated as oil and gas producers. No records of many of these remaining 30,000 abandoned wells exist and some of them remain a standing menace to safety as our coal extraction continues. Of a total of 13,100 new wells drilled since June 1929, approximately 5,200 have been drilled through coal measures. Approximately 7,000 wells, which were drilled through coal measures, have been abandoned in the same period of time. Many of these wells were drilled prior to the enactment of the oil and gas laws. Prior to the enactment of the Oil and Gas Law, which established the Oil and Gas Division of the Department of Mines in 1929, there had been several mine explosions attributable to cutting into un- charted wells and the improper plugging of other wells. The most serious explosion was that of Mines No. 47 and No. 49 of the Consolidation Coal Co. in Marion Co., when one of the so-called plugged wells leaked or seeped through some 80 ft of strata to the coal bed elevation, filling the mine with gas, the gas being ignited, killing a good many men and wrecking two coal mines. Legislation, to combat well hazards to coal mines, was slow in coming. In 1928, R. M. Lambie, then Chief of the Dept. of Mines, got sufficient support from coal, oil and gas interests to get the legislature to pass our present oil and gas laws. These statutes not only protected the coal industry but went a long way toward conserving the oil and gas resources of our state. Before drilling for oil or gas on any tract of land, known to be underlaid with one or more workable seams of coal, the well operator is required to submit a map of the area showing the location of the proposed well, and to send a copy to the Dept. of Mines and a copy to the coal operator. If no objections to the location of the proposed well are made by the coal operator within ten days, a drilling permit and a number for the well are then issued and work may proceed. If, however, the location of the proposed well is objected to by the coal operator, on the grounds that the location of the well will interfere with present mine operations, projected workings, or other- wise Cause a dangerous condition, the operator may file a written objection with the Dept. of Mines.

OVER 55 years ago, Sieverts and Hagenacker1 and Donnan and shaw2 made determinations of the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver, over a rather short range of temperatures (973° to 1125°C), using quartz bulbs, mainly at 1 atm. From the results of their investigations, Mizikar, Grace, and parlee3 plotted % O vs 1/T and obtained the following straight-line equation for solubility at 1 atm: log % O = 723.7/T - 1.0949 Recent work on the kinetics of the Ag-O2 system394 indicated there might have been some error due to reaction with the direct heated silica bulbs. Thus it became important to redetermine the solubility with the silver contained in a better refractory such as alumina, and by induction heating where the walls of the container were not so strongly heated. It was also desirable to extend the temperature range. A modified Sieverts apparatus of fairly standard type was used except that a special type of reaction tube was employed, Fig. 1. Dried argon with a guaranteed purity of 99.9 pet, and dried medical-grade oxygen with a guaranteed purity of 99.6 pet containing a little nitrogen, were the gases used. The measuring system consisted essentially of a manometer and a water-jacketed 100-cc gas buret with an open-end vertical tube parallel to the buret. This tube has the same diameter as the buret in order to give the same capillary effect on the mercury. A screw leveling device was used with the buret leveling bulb to help provide accurate pressure readings. A 2-mm ID capillary line connected the buret to the reaction chamber, helping to reduce the dead volume, which was determined with argon. The heating medium was a 2.5-kw output induction furnace. The induction coil was made of a 3/16-in. copper tubing with eight turns and an inside diameter of 4 cm. The reaction bulb was made of a quartz tube 18 cm long and 3 cm in inside diameter, Fig. 1. Inside the quartz tube were two alumina crucibles (Mor-ganite Triangle RR, XN10 and XN5) one inside the other. Below these two was an alumina disk. The disk prevented the corners of the outer crucible from expanding against the quartz tube. The solid sample (99.994 + pet Ag), which had been previously cleaned by air oxidation and repeated removal of scum, was placed inside the inner crucible. An alumina disk with a hole at the center covered the two crucibles. In order to decrease the dead volume, an evacuated quartz "filler" tube was placed on top of the crucible cover. The part of the reaction tube above the spherical joint was made up of Pyrex glass with a flat glass top. It was here that a prism was placed to facilitate the use of an optical pyrometer, previously calibrated at the freezing point of silver. The papers discussed in the following pages were presented during two sessions of the Geophysics Education Committee of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Feb. 17 and 18, 1941. At the first meeting, to consider the "Influence of Geophysics upon Geology Curricula," this Committee was joined by the Geophysics and Mining Geology Committees of the A.I.M.E., the Society of Economic Geologists, representatives of the American Geophysical Union, and delegates from the Committees on College Curricula and on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Quentin D. Singewald and Sherwin F. Kelly presided. At the ensuing session, especially emphasizing the integration of geology, physics and chemistry for the solution of earth problems, the joint participants with the Geophysics Education Committee were the Geophysics Committee, and representatives of the American Geophysical Union and of the Committee on College Curricula of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Richard M. Field and W. R. Chedsey presided. In the following summary of the discussion at the two meetings, written discussion submitted subsequently is not differentiated from that offered orally at the session. A provisional report of the Geophysics Education Committee was presented at the second session, and some of the following discussion refers to it. This report has not been printed (it is anticipated that a more comprehensive, final one will be rendered at the 1942 annual meeting), but a few mimeographed copies of this provisional report are at the A.I.M.E. headquarters and will be mailed on request. . Dr. W. P. HAYNES presented some notes prepared by Dr. F. H. LAHEE, Chairman of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists' Committee on College Curricula. This Committee's inquiries reveal the general opinion that a four-year academic preparation is inadequate, five or six being advisable. The fundamentals, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English composition, should be stressed in the first three years, with specialization in the last two or three years. Some companies provide an apprenticeship period, and themselves give additional training.. During academic years more attention needs to be given to engineering training, to field mapping, and in geology to stratigraphy and sedimentation. The amount of mere memory work should be cut, and men trained to observe and reason. Dr. Lahee emphasized the need of more adequate preparation in English composition, because of the inability of many graduates to compose acceptable reports. SHERWIN F. KELLY pointed out that much time in university training, which ought to be devoted to technical subjects, was taken up with English courses. He emphasized that it is the part of the universities to demand of the high schools that the students they send to the university be properly trained to speak and write English. Prof. W. T. THOM protested against the crowding of high-school material into already overcrowded college curricula. C. E. DOBBIN, chairman of the Committee on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, described briefly the work of his committee in publicizing geology, and said that it found a widespread popular interest in the subject but a lack of appreciation of its importance. He recommended that attempts to coordinate the works of geologists and geophysicists be expanded somewhat, toward the further developing and encouraging of a "species of geopolitician" capable of assisting the progress of geology and geophysics by more vigorous advertising of

Geographically, British India includes India or Hindustan proper, Burma, and a part of Beluchistan. In ancient times India occupied a very important position anlong the producers of minerals and metals; in fact, as late as the middle of the seventeenth century, it contributed a very considerable quota of the mineral and metal supplies of the world. The branches of the industry worthy of special note are gold, silver, lead, antimony, copper, iron, diamonds and other precious stones. The famous " Damascus steel" was originally manufactured in India, Damascus being only a mart; and it is interesting to note that even at the present time this product is still made in India. Prior to the discovery of diamonds in Brazil in 1728, India was the sole producer of this important mineral; and while no diamond-mines are now systematically worked, fine specimens are occasionally reported to be found in river-beds and in alluvial diggings. For ages, nearly all of the minerals of present commercial value have been produced and worked in India, and many of the deposits may still play an important part in the world's mining and mineral history. Despite the patient work of the ancient Indians, the limited knowledge they possessed of pumping and ventilation precluded the possibility of attaining any great depth in mining. Under special conditions, shafts have been sunk to 600 ft., but the average depth was much less. As a result of this limitation, the ancient miners confinecl their work to the available ores in sight, leaving large bodies of ore intact, which can be profitably worked with modern methods of mining. As an evidence of this statement may be mentioned the mines of the Kolar gold-fields in Mysore, which have reached in some shafts a. depth exceeding 2,400 ft. Traces of ancient work in these

In a previous paper1 from this laboratory, the development of a lead grid method for exploring the distribution of strain and density within metal powder compacts was described. In that work thin lead foil with rectangular holes cut at regular intervals was inserted with the powder fill, the arrangement pressed and then radiographed to permit measurement of the deformation of the lead grid. Densities at each grid element obtained in this manner were plotted as a function of the die dimensions. From such plots it was found that the densest part of a compact pressed from one side (the top) is at the top outer region and the least dense at the bottom outer region of the specimen. The axial density maximum occurs more often nearer the bottom than at the top. As a result of such exploratory measurements, it appeared reasonable to conclude that variations in density could be attributed in the main to die wall friction. Thus compacts of large diameter appeared relatively uniform in density except where the die fill had been uneven. Finally it was found that lubrication of the finely finished die cavity contributed more to magnitude and uniformity of density within the compact than interparticle lubrication. Since publication of the above results, it was found that circular-hole grids could be more accurately made and, when deformed within the powder, more readily measured and analyzed. Much of the former work was repeated and new results which include the effect of lubrication, compact height, pressure, speed of pressing and vacuum pressing are reported in the present paper. The 0.0938-in. diam holes were punched in the sheet on 1/8-in. centers to an accuracy of 0.001 in. The finished grid used contained eight or more holes in a row and from I to 24 rows. The lead sheet was clamped between two pairs of brass strips bolted to a small milling machine table which was itself bolted to a bench in correct position near a vise which held the punch. Travel of the lead grid in two dimensions was controlled by two steel lead screws calibrated in 0.001-in. divisions. A stripper plate was used on the punch to avoid distortion of the lead foil. A high carbon-high chromium (chrocar) one-piece steel die was used throughout the work. The die cavity was 1.125 in. in diam and the clearance between plungers and die wall was 0.001 in. The die was also used for pressing from both ends with two long plungers. Finally, lapping of die and plungers gave a surface whose rms value On an Abbot profilometer was 5 micro-in. The die walls and plungers were, except where otherwise noted, lubricated with a stearic acid suspension in benzene. This was put on in multiple layers and allowed to dry before filling the die.

Background Research on the respiratory health of coal miners has focused predominately on the relationship between coal mine dust exposure and ventilatory function impairment (Lapp et al., 1972; Jacobsen, 1976), on the prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (Lainhart et al., 1969; Morgan et al., 1973), and on coal miner mortality (Ortmeyer et al., 1974; Rockette, 1977). Lesser attention has been paid to the effects of other mining exposures. For example, underground exposure to diesel exhaust emissions (Reger et al., 1980; Ames et al., 1982,1984). An omission in US coal mining research, however, has been identified by the US Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) as the failure to study the effects of inhaled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) thermal decomposition and combustion products (Seltzer, 1979). These products may be released in the mine environment by cable fires, cable explosions, smoldering cables, and conveyor belt fires. In addition to the OTA concern, recent findings of chronic respiratory conditions and other health complications resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products in firefighters (Peters et al., 1974; NBS, 1980; NIOSH, 1982; Wallace, 1982), and in survivors of several large scale PVC-fueled fires (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1981, 1982), add immediacy to the concerns. PVC decomposition and combustion PVC decomposition is initiated at temperatures far below ignition (Hartstein and Forshey, 1974; Wallace, 1981). Hence, exposures to decomposition products from smoldering cables may be important health hazards in addition to cable insulation combustion products. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) appears to be the principle toxic substance from the thermal decomposition of PVC since up to 60% by weight is released as HCL (Barrow et al., 1979). HCL is released both as a gas and as an adsorbant on soot particles (Stone et al., 1973), thus allowing penetration of respiratory defenses. In addition, laboratory results indicate that phosgene (carbonyl chloride), a potentially lethal gas, may be produced in significant quantities from electrical arcing of wires covered with PVC insulation (Woolley, 1971; Brown and Birky, 1980). Health concerns related to PVC Toxic effects resulting from high level exposures to PVC pyrolysis and combustion products in animals (Cornish and Abar, 1969) and in humans (Wallace, 1981) is beyond question. Analyses have reported acute, or short-term, health effects resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products (Peters et al., 1974; Polakoff et al., 1975). Recently, however, several studies have found that acute effects are often followed first by apparent healing, and then by delayed chronic effects. This pattern of consequential respiratory involvement among persons involved in major PVC-fueled fires has been noted in firefighters, specifically the 1975 New York Telephone Exchange fire (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1982), and the survivors of the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club fire (Wallace, 1981). An obstructive syndrome (low FVC and FEV1) was seen in 15% of workers three months following fighting a PVC-fueled fire (Colardyn et al., 1976). Long-term respiratory symptoms seen in studies of survivors of PVC-fueled fires include the bronchitis symptoms of cough and phlegm, and lung dysfunction (Wallace, 1981). Additional support for the thesis of longer-term respiratory effects resulting from PVC-fueled fires is derived from the finding that four persons who initially survived the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire died within nine months of the fire of severe respiratory impairment (Wallace, 1981).

This paper is a resume of some of the accomplishments in direct rolling of strip from molten metal, and a description of some experimental developments in recent years. In all the early developmental work, we used a pair of rolls with a bath of metal between them, maintained by flanges or plates at the ends of the rolls. These flanges produced an excess cooling of the metal and built up enormous pressures at this point as the metal went through the bight of the rolls. Many means were tried for compensating for this excess cooling, such as thickening the strip at the edges, heating the end dams directly or by flowing more of the molten metal against them, leaving an open crotch below the end dam and above the bight of the roll, where the excessive pressures built up could be relieved by some of the metal squeezing out at this point, and so forth. All of these helped somewhat to solve the problem, so that very large heats of many metals melting up to 200°F., having commercially uniform gauges, could be rolled up to 24 in. in width. The rolls were made by mounting heavy rings on heavy shafts, and pressures up to 75,000 lb. per inch in width were used. Cooling of the rolls was generally done by spraying water on the outside surface of the rolls that came in contact with the molten metal. Roll life was commercial with brass, barely satisfactory with copper, and totally impractical with steels. The greatest difficulty encountered in all this work was caused by lack of uniformity in the product, owing to a folding action in the mill. Those who are familiar with the operation of a rolling mill know that a bar entering a mill moves at a lower speed than the peripheral speed of the roll. However, the metal solidifying from a bath in a direct rolling mill is cast at exactly the peripheral speed of the roll. This results in irregular folding of the metal, some irregular remelting of the previously solidified sections, and it is difficult, if not impossible, in some cases to exert enough pressure to weld these folded sections sufficiently into a sound product. In addition to this melange of solid, semisolid and liquid metal in the bath, we know that pressure near the freezing point of any alloy in which the constituents have different melting points—and I believe all of them have—causes the lower-melling-point constituent to be squeezed back until it becomes cold enough to solidify and go through the mill. This segregates all alloys, the segregation increasing with the pressures and the freezing ranges of the metals. Add to these problems the excessive roll-maintenance costs with high-melting-point metals and then, the greatest difficulty of all, the vanity of homo sapiens where a matter of possibly large importance is being considered, and the problems seemed almost insuperable. It was long ago obvious to me that something much more than the size of a corporation's money and self-assuradce was necessary if this process was to be made commercial. I should like to show you first the performance of the only mill we ever really designed and built, to see what might be done with a well constructed mill. This paper discusses the results of an investigation made to develop a method of combatting corrosion of subsurface oil-well equipment caused by brines containing hydrogen sulphide. Carbon monoxide, aldehydes, and certain cyanide compounds were found by laboratory tests to effectively inhibit corrosion of steel by sulphide brines. Experiments were made for one year in eight wells in West Texas fields using formaldehyde as an inhibitor. It was found that the inhibitor treatment successfully prevented the severe corrosion previously experienced in these wells, and effected important net savings in operating costs. Introduction Corrosion of oil-field equipment has long been a problem in areas producing sour crudes. These areas include the major fields of Arkansas, Western Kansas, West Texas and New Mexico. Corrosion in these fields is caused primarily by the chemical action of hydrogen sulphide in the presence of water and by electric currents entering the wells through flow lines. Hydrogen sulphide is noncorrosive to iron or steel in the absence of water but under the usual conditions prevailing in oil wells where more or less water is present, hydrogen sulphide is very corrosive. This type of corrosion occurs over the pH range below 9, which includes all natural oil-field brines. If air is present in addition to hydrogen sulphide and water, corrosion proceeds at an extremely rapid rate. It was reported several years ago that a string of oil-well tubing was literally dissolved within 50 days where an air lift was used on a well producing considerable water and hydrogen sulphide. Air is generally absent in wells producing sour crude. After hydrogen sulphide corrosion starts, it proceeds with increasing severity and its correction becomes progressively more difficult. This characteristic of sulphide corrosion has been attributed to the formation of galvanic couples between the iron and steel equipment on one hand and the products of corrosion on the other.' Severe corrosion of subsurface oil-well equipment leads to a multitude of troubles. In addition to destruction of costly equipment, producing sands often are damaged by flooding with water leaking through corroded casing; bad mechanical conditions may develop in a well due to obstructions caused by corroded equipment lost in the hole, or partly collapsed casing; pumping operations are interfered with, and severe emulsification problems may result from the homogenizing action of corroded balls and seats.% A typical case of severe corrosion caused by hydrogen sulphide was reported in Howard County, Texas, where it was necessary to pull tubing once a week to repair leaks after the tubing had been in use for only one year. OXIDATION is characteristic of all processes for making steel from pig iron. This thought has been aptly expressed by H. W. Graham13 in the most recent Howe Memorial Lecture, "The process of steel-making consists of using iron oxide to reduce the carbon content of the pig iron to the desired level." Direct oxidation refers to the reaction that results from introducing oxygen either alone or mixed with other gases directly into the steel bath. In working a heat, oxygen in some form is added to the steel to remove the undesirable constituents as oxides. There are two general methods of supplying this oxygen to the open hearth bath. The method in which the oxygen is added as a, compound such as C02-or iron ore is designated an indirect method because the steel bath must first decompose the compound to attain oxygen in a usable form. The other method in which oxygen is added to the bath in the elemental or gaseous form, more or less diluted by other gases such as nitrogen, is a direct, method because no decomposition is necessary before the oxygen reacts with iron to form FeO which is dissolved in the bath in a usable form. Bubble formation (at least of a macroscopic size) presents no problem in case of direct oxidation because the reacting agent (oxygen) is in the form of bubbles when entering the metal. Regardless of whether oxygen is introduced into the bath directly or indirectly, several reactions proceed concurrently. In the presence of the bath of molten iron, FeO is formed either by oxidation of iron by oxygen or reduction of oxides by iron. This FeO dissolved in the molten iron is the source of oxygen for the oxidation of manganese, carbon, silicon, and phosphorus if these are present. The oxidation of carbon from steel is the controlling steelmaking reaction. The introduction of oxygen into the bath, its reaction in the elimination of impurities, and its control by the use of de-oxidizing additions have been subjects of importance since steel was first made by the bessemer process. Direct oxidation is, in a sense, an application of the bessemer principle to the open hearth process. Graham13 states: "The use of oxygen or air jets introduced into the metal bath is essentially an effort to approach in the open hearth the turbulence, rapid interface reaction, and high production rate per hour that exists in the bessemer process." The general subject, "Oxygen in Steelmaking," was given new life by the studies of Herty and associates starting about1925. The current interest in elemental oxygen is intimately related to the large scale production of oxygen developed during the war period. Some of the first applications were made during the early summer of 1946 at the Steel Co. of Canada using oxygen with the fuel. Such a use is of considerable interest and importance in contributing to faster heats but is not the subject of the present discussion which deals entirely with the introduction of elemental oxygen directly into the open hearth bath. A scrubber of new design has been invented for the beneficiation of glass and chemical sands. The machine is described and its capacity and metallurgical efficiency compared with the performance of other sand cleaning devices. THREE years ago, when the Process Research Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. sought a remedy for the increasing cost of disposing of great quantities of spent sands from foundries, R. C. Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.' The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry.' The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5" to 35" from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180" apart. Each successive set is mounted 90" from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, lx1 1hx9 in. long, which is attached about Yz in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The capacity of the machine is limited by the amount and the hardness of the coating material and by the quality of product desired.
