At a meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials at Atlantic City, June, 1908, Dr. C. B. Dudley, in his presiden-tial address,' showed the vital necessity of not only making a steel rail as good as in the past, but of making it considerably better in order to meet the present and prospective requiremeuts of railroads. Doctor Dudley requested the co-operation of all who from personal experience could give information that would result in bringing about the production of a steel rail that could be relied upon to meet the present requirements. I have had considerable experience in the practical manufacture of steel of almost every grade, during the past 40 years, and I shall suggest changes that will bring about the results desired. Doctor Dudley has had a long experience as chemical and metallurgical expert for the Pennsylvania railroad, but he frankly admits that up to the present time both he and other metallurgical authorities lack the practical knowledge of steel-making that is necessary to state correctly the reasons for the unreliability of the steel rails now produced. The necessity is self-evident for more positive practical knowledge on the part of these experts of what is possible and what is impossible regarding the practical manufacturing of steel rails from the ingot to the finished product. Chemical knowledge in steel-making is far ill advance of what it was years ago, and might be said to cover every requirement (in that department) for producing reliable steel. Most metallurgists appreciate the great need of a process for the extraction and recovery of valuable metals from complex ore, where the presence of one metal increases the cost of extracting the other rnetals to such an extent that not any of the metals can be extracted at a profit. We need only refer to some of the mines in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, where oxidation has taken place and the sulphur, zinc, copper, and some of the iron and other metals have been leached out, large bodies of oxidized ore remaining, rich in lead, silver, and sometimes gold. These metals have been concentrated by the removal of the other metals, leaving a very desirable ore for treatment in the blast-furnace for the production of lead bullion, and recovery of the silver and gold. If lead is not present, the gold and silver metals are usually recovered by some method of milling, or the ore is shipped to a smelter, where it is mixed with lead ore or copper-iron sulphide ore from some other mine. In these same mines, when developed to greater depth below the leached or oxidized zone, the ore is found to contain the original mixture of sulphur, zinc, copper, etc., added to, or I should say left with, the lead, silver, and gold values; but instead of adding to the value of the ore, the presence of these elements, especially zinc, makes the copper, silver, and gold of less value, and often worthlees. Such was the experience of the oldest mines in Leadville,.Colo., until methods of mechanical separation of the lead from the zinc were developed sufficiently to allow of some profit by the making of a concentrate rich in zinc to be shipped to the zinc smelter, and sometimes a lead concentrate which could be shipped to the lead smelter; but even in these cases the waste of the different metals is a very serious matter. In the very best concentrating plants some zinc will be left in the lead concentrate, to be lost and to give considerable trouble in the lead-smelting furnace. On the other hand, some of the lead, with a large percentage of the copper and silver, will follow the zinc into the zinc concentrate, to be, perhaps, recovered by smelting the cinder or clinker left in the re-

The past 20 years has seen a revolutionary change in the testing of materials at elevated temperatures. This has largely been brought about by the practical importance of the creep problem in the design of equipment for operation at high temperatures. The short-time tension test carried out at elevated temperatures has consequently assumed in many cases only a secondary role compared with the longtime creep test. In many problems, however, a knowledge of the short-time high-temperature properties of a metal is essential. To mention a few cases in which this is so, we might include all hot-forming operations such as rolling, forging, etc., the welding problem if residual stresses are to be computed, the development of new alloys for high-temperature service where, in the initial stages, time does not permit of long duration creep tests, and others. Usually a knowledge of the short-time properties is desired, if only to serve as a background against which to compare creep behavior. In conducting short-time high-temperature tests, it has been almost the universal practice to determine stresses based on the original area and strains referred to the original gauge length which is usually chosen as 2 in. It has been pointed out1,2 that one of the reasons that the true significance of certain tensile properties is not understood, which perhaps curtails their usefulness, especially when the material is applied under conditions differing considerably from the test conditions, is that true physical stresses and strains are not determined. It is essential to have a knowledge of true stresses and strains in order to correlate the values present in the tension test with those existing, for example, in hot metal-forming operations and in the general problem of the yielding and failure of metals under combined stress conditions. Stress and strain values based on the original dimensions of the test piece do not exist physically except in the early stages of the test. Since at the present time there is very little information in the literature on true stress-strain relations in the short-time high-temperature tension test it is proposed in the following pages to describe a

Discussion of the paper of Robert R. Abbott, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2389 to 2400. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.:-Mr. Abbott has certainly made a strenuous effort to ascertain the influence of the various elements on the absorption of carbon by steel-a subject of great importance to those dealing with the case hardening of that metal. Because of the extensive and careful character of Mr. Abbott's experiments, one is all the more disappointed that his results, as he himself recognizes, are not more satisfactory; for, indeed they leave us just about where we were,-still entertaining uncertain views in regard to the carbon-absorbing power of various alloy steels. It might be asked whether Mr. Abbott's method of estimating the amount of carbon absorbed-namely, by weighing the specimens before and after the carburizing treatment-was the best one to select. Are not serious sources of error. inherent to such procedure because of the difficulty of satisfactorily removing the earburizing material attached to the specimen ? The method of least squares has certainly failed to solve the problem satisfactorily. By manipulating Mr. Abbott's results in a different manner I have obtained the following expression: P = 100 - 50 C - 7 Ni + 20 Cr, in which P represents the carbon-absorbing power; C, the percentage of carbon; Ni, that of nickel; and Cr, that of chromium. It is assumed that the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron, or what might be called its carburizability, is represented by 100. Applying the formula, for instance, to a steel containing 0.15 per cent. C, 3 per cent. nickel, and 0.50 per cent. chromium, its carbon-absorbing power would be 100-50X0.15-7X3+20X0.50=81.50; that is, 81.50 per cent. of the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron.

THE need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. FURNACE DESIGN There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the checkers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped until the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the, general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace.

Discussion of the paper of CHARLES E. WEAVER, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1419 to 1427. MILNOR ROBERT, Seattle, Wash.-A year ago at this time, 12 wells were being drilled for oil in western Washington. Some excitement attended the operations; many thousand acres of land were leased to oil companies and stock was widely advertised. The location of the wells may be described by referring to the conclusions in Dr. Weaver's paper, in which the State is divided into four areas. In the area described first, which includes the Cascade Mountains and eastern Washington, where conditions are decidedly against the existence of commercial oil fields, no new drilling was reported. In the second area, the Puget Sound Basin, where conditions are unfavorable, but to a less degree, five wells were being drilled. The third region, covering certain parts of southwestern Washington, contained four drilling wells and several others projected or beginning operations, in spite of the absence of petroleum seepages. None of the wells mentioned is fully active today. On the western side of the Olympic Peninsula, along the Pacific Ocean, are three wells which have been the scene of operations for the past two to three years. The region they are prospecting contains seepages of light oils and is the fourth area described in the paper. The difficulties of transporting both men and supplies to the well sites have delayed operations and brought the costs up to high figures. The drilling of these three wells is interesting on account of the presence of oil in nearby seepages and its occasional appearances in the material penetrated. A. C. The geological conditions on the Peninsula are not similar to the conditions in California, and it would not prove to be a continuous belt of oil-bearing territory from there to here if oil should be found at either end.

INTRODUCTION To provide a background for discussing long-range financial and operational planning in the mining industry, we would like to begin by describing the role of planning in Codelco. Having taken part in Codelco's planning process since its inception in 1976, we believe that useful conclusions may be drawn for the experience we shall relate. Although Codelco is a state-owned copper producer with an important role in the Chilean economy, and is consequently very much at the core of national economic planning, the following discussion is not related to government planning but to planning in an operationally and commercially autonomous business concern with all the characteristics of a private enterprise. The only way in which Codelco differs from private business is that its financial successes or failures have a more direct impact on the countryls ability to participate in international trade, to meet its international financial commitments and to achieve economic and social growth. Thus, what follows is a presentation of the conceptual features of the planning process at Codelco and a description of the current state of planning in the company. It is understood that certain conceptual components are basic to any formal strategic planning process, and that the components of Codelco's planning process are therefore generally applicable in similar companies. First, the mission and scope of operation of the company must be defined, and goals must be set to achieve leadership in the business activities in which it engages. Having set this framework, the company must constantly scrutinize those internal elements and conditions that are essential to fulfill its mission and achieve leadership. In Codelco this means considering the actions which can best serve to define future capacities, taking into account declining ore grades and determining optimal production levels; watching over the productivity and skills of its labor force, and; keeping abreast of technological developments in non-ferrous mining and processing. If the company is proficient in these three areas, it will be cost efficient and there- fore competitive. Codelco must also watch over the business environment in which it operates. The company sells concentrate, blister and fire-refined copper, wirebar, cathodes and wire rod and must study the behavior of the market to attune its product mix to the demand existing for these various commodities in the international market and the copper consuming industries in general. By examining the internal and external environment in which the company conducts its production and commercial operations, it is able to diagnose its strengths and weaknesses, to identify the hazards it must overcome to stay ahead in the copper trade, and to take full advantage of business opportunities as they arise. CHARACTERISTICS OF CODELCO-CHILE Although our subject is Codelco, readers should keep in mind that there are many other copper producing operations in Chile, all in the private sector, and many valuable deposits that may be exploited in the future. Codelco is the only public sector copper producer, although there is one other state enterprise that operates smelting and refining facilities principally to serve a large number of very small producers of copper concentrate. In the mid-19801s, Codelco is the largest copper mining company of the world and the largest producer and exporter of copper with yearly sales totalling close to US$ 1.8 billion in 1983. Moreover, it is a highly profitable copper company at a time when the world copper industry as a whole has reported losses for several years. Codelco-Chile is a fairly new organization. The history of the four mining operations it manages is much longer: El Teniente was opened in 1912, Chuquicamata in 1915, Salavador in 1959 -- with installations of the old Potrerillos mine dating from 1927 -- and Andina in 1970. THE term oil property, in this discussion, includes any type of easement or grant under which petroleum might be produced; it ranges from the mere right to drill on undeveloped wildcat acreage up to a fully developed oil property. The values of an oil property, as thus defined, vary widely according to the use for which it is intended, whether it is from the viewpoint of the speculator, the fraudulent stock promoter, the refiner and pipe-line owner, or the oil producer. The market value of a property is usually a combination of some two or more of these influences, and occasionally a combination of all of them, but we prefer to treat each viewpoint as distinct from the others, allowing the reader to make his own combination in such proportions as his inclination and property seem to require. This paper will treat the subject from the viewpoint of the oil producer. However, the other influences have such bearing on the cost of property to the producer and on the price he might obtain by its sale as to warrant brief discussion of them. Speculation, particularly lease speculation, is a parasitic growth on the oil industry, healthy enough, but of no economic value. The class of property usually dealt in for this purpose is the undeveloped lease. Its speculative value may have some relation to its probable productive value, but most frequently this value is the product of temporary excitement due to local development. The lease speculator, seeking out the trend of development or securing early information regarding a proposed test or a new discovery, immediately secures leases whose market value will be increased when the existence of such development becomes more widely known. His profits are purely unearned increment. Not proposing to spend money in exploration, he can afford to compete in purchase with the operator, who, in addition to bonus paid, must spend large sums in testing out his own acreage and that of the nearby speculator as well. It has a tendency to compel unduly high bonuses.

THE work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacionál da Produção Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operat¬ing practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being expanded and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining condi¬tions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern São Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). The increasing demand for greater speed and more accuracy, in making daily assays of ores and products from mills treating material containing but very small quantities of lead and copper, has caused the older analytical methods to be supplanted by new ones devised to meet the needs of modern work. For " control" work in copper-analyses, I had, previous to the present equipment, introduced in my laboratory the ordinary electrolytic method, using hollow cylindrical electrodes; and with these I began a series of experiments in determining the lead-content of daily mill-samples and controls. The results, proving accurate and satisfactory, I then devised, with Mr. H. E. T. Haultain, a cheaper electrode than the ordinary jaCket-electrode, which costs from $15 to $20,—the expense of the older form making the installation of many units very costly. The form of cathode finally adopted as the most satisfactory, shown in Fig. 1, is cut from 0.001-in. platinum foil. It is 12.5 cm. long, and is divided into a blade 4 cm. wide and 6.25 cm. long, and a tongue 0.7 cm. aide and 6.25 long, the immersion area being 50 sq. cm. and weight 1.5 grams. The blade is first sand-blasted and then corrugated lengthwise, in order to impart the necessary rigidity. Strips of platinum foil 0.001 in. thick, 12.5 cm. long and 0.5 cm. aide, having a median corrugation, form the anodes. Three electrodes are used in each cell; one anode in the middle and one cathode on each side of the anode. These electrodes are connected to slotted aluminum terminals, in which they are held by contact pressure. The terminals are 5/16in. rods, projecting 2 in. horizontally in front of the wall of the cabinet; at the back the middle electrode (anode) is connected with one pole of the current, and the two outer ones (cathodes) with the other pole.

Magnetic iron ore was mined in Essex County, N. Y., during the American Revolution; Benedict Arnold is said to have mined ore near Port Henry to secure iron for chains and spikes for the Lake Champlain fleet. Details regarding the operations prior to 1804 are not easily obtained but work on a commercial scale appears to have been started about 1838. The Witherbee, Sherman & Co. was established in 1849. The property of the district is held in fee almost entirely by the mining companies. The Mineville iron-ore district, as well as the entire Adirondack region, belongs to the pre-Cambrian complex. The readily identified rocks consist of gabbro, anorthosite, syenite, and granite, and are classed as igneous, eruptive, and intrusive. In addition, there is a great variety of gneisses, rocks with a variable mineral composition but all more or less distinctly foliated. The Grenville series are the oldest rocks in the district; this series consists of graphitic white limestones, graphitic sandstones, and quartzites and gneisses with or without graphite. The orebodies occur in the gneissic rocks and are comformable to the structure of the rocks. The typical occurrence of the ore in this district is in lenticular bodies with a parallel pitch to the southwest; this structure is best exemplified in the New Bed mine. The Harmony and Old Bed orebodies are faulted by two sets of diabase dikes, one set having a southwest strike and the other set an east-west strike. The ores occurring in the acid gneissic rocks are non-titaniferous. The ores occurring in the gabbros and anorthosites are high in titanium; these deposits are irregular, have no structural relation with one another, and are unquestionably of igneous origin. The origin of the gneissic rocks and the ores therein contained is not settled; both the sedimentary theory of ore concentration and the igneous theory of magmatic segregation have been advanced. We rejoice that the world-war is ended. We are proud of the part played by the English-speaking peoples—all doing equal honor to the traditions they share in common. One of the compensations for the calamity of the past four years is the fact that the Briton and the American, striving together in the cause of human liberty, have learned to understand and to respect each other. The mother country entered the fight resolutely at the beginning, while yet unready to meet the carefully prepared onslaught of the enemy; then the sons from the overseas dominions rallied to the old battle-cry eagerly and effectively; and last, but not least, the stepsons came from across the Atlantic, speaking the same speech, playing the same game, and fighting in the same clean way. It was a great foregathering of those that use the language of Shakespeare and idealize the principles of liberty for which the friends and associates of Shakespeare stood sponsor three centuries ago.' At a time like this it is pleasant to dwell upon the fact that the liberal Englishmen who organized the Virginia company were the pioneers of self-government on the American continent. The Virginia Assembly, convoked in 1619, was the first example of a domestic parliament to regulate internal affairs on this side of the Atlantic.2 The Governor of Virginia, Sir Edwin Sandys, had been a pupil of Richard Hooker at Oxford and from that political teacher he and his friends had imbibed the idea of combining civil liberty with constitutional order. To this group of large-minded Englishmen, the American colonists owed their liberal charters and their successive triumphs over the royal prerogative. Let it be noted that the American colonists had to deal with James II and George 111, the two smallest minds in the list of British kings. Another historical note, more pleasant to record, is the connection between the two principal groups of American settlers. In 1608, when the Pilgrim fathers, William Brewster and John Robinson, led their Separatist congregation to Holland and there prepared the expedition to America, they were assisted by Sandys and the Virginia Council, who were willing to share their privileges with them. When the Pilgrims set sail in 1620 they had the promise, obtained by Sandys from King James, that they should have freedom of worship,

Arthur H. Elliott, New York, N. Y.: We have all been very much interested in the results of Dr. Bone's work, which Mr. Ellis has presented to us this evening. The high temperatures attained by this method perhaps afford us an explanation of the temperatures reached in the puddling-furnace with its crude and almost primitive methods of burning fuel, by means of which we have, nevertheless, been able to melt iron in a comparatively short time, and keep it in a molten condition down to a high degree of purity. No doubt many of us have wondered, as I have done, how such a result could be obtained in such a way; and it occurs to me that, perhaps, Dr. Bone has supplied the explanation in disclosing the effect on combustion of burning gas and air after passing through, and in contact with, a porous refractory body. May not the fettling of the puddling-furnace have, in some degree, an effect upon the combustion like the influence of the porous diaphragm employed by Dr. Bone ?

THE introduction of underground machinery in mines, and especially the invention of the rock drill, called attention to the necessity for some motive power to drive them. The use of steam generators underground is as a general thing inadmissible, owing to the, difficulties of ventilation and the transportation of fuel, and the great loss of power by condensation in the pipes, when surface generators are used, added to the inconvenience of getting rid of the exhaust steam, has precluded the direct use of steam for this class of machinery. Water as a power has with very few exceptions proved a failure, owing to its weight and incompressibility, and there-fore the attention of mining engineers has very naturally turned to the use of compressed air. This agent not only answers all the requirements for power, but has the double advantage of greatly assisting in thoroughly ventilating remote workings, and in cooling the underground atmosphere. It is therefore clear that the successful introduction of underground machinery is dependent on the economical production of good and efficient air-compressing machinery. Although many improvements have of late years been introduced in this class of machines, the most of them are open to serious objections, the chief of which are the very small duty they perform for the power expended, and their great expense, due to the complexity of their construction. This latter fault is the chief reason why the introduction of rock drills and other underground engines is so limited, as comparatively few mines can afford to expend the required capital for the installation of a complete compressing plant. But with the introduction of a cheap and effective compressor, there is no doubt that power drills will become as generally used in mines as the hand drills are now. The great excess of power required in most machines to compress air over that given out again by the use of the air thus compressed (amounting as it does in most cases to sixty per cent.) is well known to all mining engineers. The introduction of underground machinery in mines, and especially the invention of the rock drill, called attention to the necessity for some motive power to drive them. The use of steam generators underground is as a general thing inadmissible, owing to the difficulties of ventilation and the transportation of fuel, and the great loss of power by condensation in the pipes, when surface generators are used, added to the inconvenience of getting rid of the exhaust steam, has precluded the direct use of steam for this class of machinery. Water as a power has with very few exceptions proved a failure, owing to its weight and incompressibility, and therefore the attention of mining engineers has very naturally turned to the use of compressed air. This agent not only answers all the requirements for power, but has the double advantage of greatly assisting in thoroughly ventilating remote workings, and in cooling the underground atmosphere. Although an aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph provided some form of radial-line method is used to determine the true position of images. The slotted- templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. ALTHOUGH a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map. RADIAL-LINE CONTROL It is essential that the principle of radial-line control in the use of vertical aerial photographs be understood and accepted before any confidence in the slotted-templet method can be gained. A simple sketch and some enlargements showing the Empire State Building will serve to illustrate the cause of displacement of an image that is above the datum plane as recorded in the photograph. The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.

The behavior of tungsten and its surface oxides in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres and in high vacua at elevated temperatures is a question of considerable technical importance. The use of tungsten as a a Or as an important component in alloys in high temperature Oxidizing atmospheres has been limited because of the unprotective nature of its oxide film and the volatility of its oxide. This paper will present results of a micro-balance study of the following problems: (1) the oxidation behavior in the ternperature range of 25 to 550°C (') the reduction with pure hydrogen Of thin Oxide films formed On tungsten, and (3) the volatility Of thin Oxide films On tungsten. Tungsten is an interesting metal to study for the following reasons: (1) although the Oxide to to ratio is greater than one, the oxide is not considered protective, ('1 the meta1 readily Oxidizes at temperatures from 30" to 55o°C (3) the oxides WO² and WO³ are reduced at temperatures as low as 500°C. by hydrogen, and (4) the Oxide WO3 is volatile at temperatures from 800 to 1100°C. Literature The oxidation of tungsten in its thin film range has not been studied critically. In the thick film range Dunn3 has made the only systematic study. He found the oxidation rate to obey the parabolic rate law in the temperature range of 700 to 900°c. The temperature variation of the oxidation rate constant was found to follow an exponential law of the Arrhenius type. An inflection was noticed in the temperature plot of the rate law constant at 850 to 900°C. This was attributed to a phase change in the oxides, Schei14 has studied the oxidation rate at 500 and 700°C over long periods of time and found a linear rate law. This result was interpreted as evidence for the presence of a nonprotective film. Pilling and Bed-worth's5 analyses of the oxide volume to metal volume ratio would indicate that a compact protective film should form. McAdam and Geil6 have studied the oxidation of tungsten in the thin film range using the interference color method. A parabolic rate law was found. Their curves showed that tungsten oxidizes faster than nickel but more slowly than iron. The lattice structures found in the oxidation of tungsten surfaces have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen.? They have reported that WO3 is the stable oxide in contact with the metallic substrate up to approximately 600°C while wo³ forms first at 7oo°c. Hagg and Magneli8 have recently reported a study of the lattice structures . observed in the tungsten oxidcs using the X-ray diffraction method. THE following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal students. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbituminous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual -analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses.
