The physical properties of the materials are listed, together with a short explanation of how this material binds the sand grains together without materially reducing the effective permeability of the sand. The chemical can be used in wells with bottom-hole temperatures ranging from 105°F to more than 350°F A description of the equipment required and the techniques used for applying these plastics to the wells is included. Introduction Recovering oil and gas from unconsoli-dated sand formations offers one of the most troublesome of all production problems. These sands generally present no particular trouble while drilling is in progress, but after the well has been completed and a pressure differential has been established across the face of the producing zone, the formation begins to L'slough," resulting in "sanding up" of the well. The term "sanding up" means that sufficient volumes of sand have moved into the well bore or casing to cause a serious reduction or complete halt of all flow of oil, water or gas. In rare cases a well may produce only a small amount of sand and still continue to flow or pump, the sand being carried to the surface in the fluid stream. However, in such instances, the result may be a costly repair bill due to the effect of the sand on surface and pumping equipment. The difficulty of producing petroleum from sands that are loosely cemented has long been recognized by petroleum engineers but only within the last few years has any new approach to the problem been undertaken. This involves the use of plastics that are capable of bonding the individual sand grains in place without materially reducing the effective permeability of a formation. The successful application of plastics for the consolidation of poorly cemented sands is relatively recent but now it is widely used in many of the more difficult areas on the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. This relatively new use of plastics1 in the oil fields has been preceded by much laboratory and field research on the use of various chemicals2,3 for solving numerous well-completion and work-over problems. Plastics now are being used successfully to control gas-oil and water-oil ratios,4'6 in zone isolation, the repair of casing leaks, the elimination of caving in cable-tool drilling wells6'7 and in the setting of linerss and casing.9 Sand-consolidating plastics, however, are basically different from all others in that they must not form an impervious seal. Field Practices The approach to the sanding-up problem usually has been the mechanical obstruction of the movement of the sand grains.

Maximum production of High Grade was expected to be reached before the middle of the year, and demands of new brass mills were to take all of the increase. The accuracy of the method of steady-state approximation applied to the problems of heat transfer involving phase change (London and Seban's solution) is improved by defining a "modified heat of fusion" which accounts for the effect of specific heat. An analytical expression for this modified heat of fusion is derived in terms of the actual heat of fusion, specific heat, and surface temperature. Numerical solution for the freezing of iron indicates that the ratio of the modified heat of fusion to the actual heat of fusion increases from 1.04 to 1.4 as the surface temperature decreases from 2700° to 1600°F. The heat transfer process accompanying solidification is complicated owing to the moving solid-liquid interface where the latent heat of fusion is released. Exact analytical solution is available only for a few special cases of freezing problems such as Stefan's1 problem. In a commonly used steady-state approximation method, London and seban's2 solution, the effect of specific heat is neglected. This approximation, however, may introduce some degree of error in mathematical analysis when the temperature of the solid surface is much lower than the freezing temperature, as in the case of freezing metals. In a recent work by Robertson and Schenck,3 the problem of freezing a semi-infinite region with finite surface conductance was programed in a digital computer through the finite difference method. A family of curves for the correction of the London-Seban solution was given in a dimensionless plot for different ratios of heat of fusion and specific heat effect; it was shown that the London-Seban solution when applied to the freezing of a mild steel slab under some particular conditions gave results in error by about 10 pct in the solidification rate. Although the Robertson-Schenck computer result has improved the London-Seban solution to a great extent, lack of generality and the tedious computing procedure have restricted its application. In this paper a "modified heat of fusion" which accounts for the effect of specific heat is defined, and is used instead of the actual heat of fusion in the London-Seban solution. An analytical expression of this modified heat of fusion in terms of the specific heat, surface temperature, and actual heat of fusion is derived by comparing the solutions of Stefan and London-Seban for the case of freezing of a semi-infinite region with constant surface temperature. It can also be extended to the case with finite surface conductance, and the results show good agreement with the Robertson-Schenck computer solution. The expression of the modified heat of fusion, the accuracy of the London-Seban solution, and the temperature distribution within the solid are presented graphically in dimensionless form. Numerical solution for the freezing of iron indicates that the ratio of the modified heat of fusion to the actual heat of fusion increases from 1.04 to 1.40 as the surface temperature decreases from 2700° to 1600°F.

VOLUME 6 of the Transactions of the Baikov Institute of Metallurgy, Moscow, is devoted to the subject of "the experimental and theoretical study of the physical characteristics of dilute solid solutions,11 and summarizes work that has been done largely in the years 1958-9. In view of the attention that Soviet investigators have given to this subject, it seemed useful to carry out an independent experimental investigation in an effort to judge the scientific basis and practical significance of this field of study. The present note is a preliminary report of this investigation. The first property studied by the Soviet group was X-ray spectra of solid-solution alloys.' An anomaly observed at low concentrations (--0.05 at. pct) of the alloying element led to the theory that each impurity atom in a transition-metal base alloy is the center of a "block" of affected atoms with a radius of about 10"7 cm. This theory was further developed in a later paper.2 By this time similar anomalies had been found in diffusion coefficients3 and in thermal expansion.4 The entire development up to 1959 was reviewed in a comprehensive paper, and further theoretical ideas were also published at this time. Finally, the volume mentioned above was published in 19607 giving new experimental data on anomalies in optical properties and Hall constant, and a new theoretical treatment also appeared.' Although western scientists have done both theoretical work, summarized recently by Friedel,9 and considerable experimental work on dilute solid solutions, there is little support for the marked anomalies reported in the Soviet papers. Of the physical properties studied by the Soviet investigators, thermal expansion was chosen for the present investigation because of the relative ease of obtaining the necessary precision of measurement. A Leitz dilatometer was used for this purpose, and a special technique involving interchanging of the two specimens being compared permitted a precision of 0.05 x X in average thermal expansion over the range 27° to 600°C. The specimens were heated and cooled in vacuum or in a protective atmosphere at a rate of 50 °C per hr. Ferrovac E iron was used as the comparison specimen and in every case had a coefficient of expansion higher than (or equal to) that of the alloy. Since unintentional impurities are an important factor in studies of dilute alloys, special attention was given to the purity of the iron and the alloys used. The alloys were the same of those used by Abrahamson10 and by Michalak," and their preparation is described in these references. The wizardry of nucleonics has added new and greater dimensions to the almost inseparable "twins"-zirconium and hafnium. So close is their relationship that neither element is found free of the other in any presently known mineral. Although zirconium in the form of its oxide was discovered in 1789 by Klaproth, the metal in an impure, nonductile form was not isolated until 1824 by Berzelius. About 100 years later -1925-van Arkel and deBoer developed and patented a technique for the deposition in vacuo of crystalline, coherent, highly ductile metal of extreme purity on an electrically heated filament through the dissociation of gaseous zirconium tetraiodide. Within the past five years both zirconium and hafnium have been dramatized by the press and in popular science magazines. This has led to the false assumption that practically all of the world consumption of zirconium ores is used in the production of the metals. Recent statistics on the subject show that not over 15 pct of the zirconium ore consumed in 1958 went to ferrosilicon zirconium and zirconium metal. The rest was consumed in refractories, foundry sand and facings and ceramics. The importance of zirconium as a component in compact, relatively lightweight nuclear energy units, such as those now used in the submarine Nautilus,6 is well established. A rival of zirconium metal as a casing for atomic fuels is a newly developed ceramic body. It is claimed to be cheaper than zirconium-to withstand higher temperatures-and to be more resistant to corrosion. Whether such ceramic casings have the required low thermal neutron absorption cross section, high strength and easy formability of zirconium is yet to be demonstrated. Hafnium, because of its low order of abundance and its close chemical relationship to zirconium, was not definitely recognized as a new element until around 1923, despite prior claims. A study of the X-ray spectra of zirconium led to its identification. The circumstances leading to the discovery of hafnium were much less fortuitous than those surrounding zirconium. The more precise tools of arc and X-ray spectrometry lent themselves admirably to the search for elements to fill certain gaps in the periodic table. [ ] Pure, ductile hafnium-a metal similar in appearance to stainless steel-has a specific gravity of 13.3 (zirconium 6.52) and a melting point of 2,200°C. In other respects it closely resembles zirconium except in one important respect which gives it a preeminent position in nuclear energy development, namely, a high thermal-neutron absorption cross section. This explains the necessity of hafnium-free zirconium in atomic piles. The ability of hafnium to capture thermal neutrons makes it an excellent "moderator" of "governor" when used as control rods in nuclear reactors (Table 1).

AS part of a program to investigate the diffusive properties of dilute ternary austenites we have made a determination of the effect of chromium on the activity of carbon in ? iron. Samples of pure iron and Fe-Cr alloys were simultaneously equilibrated at 1000°C with atmospheres of controlled CO/CO2 ratio following the procedures of Darken and Gurry 1 and smith.' The 0.020 in. thick samples were analysed for carbon by microcombustion analyses3 to yield a set of isoacti-vity curves. The latter were converted to activity coefficient (standard state at infinite dilution) plots by combination with Smith's data2 for the activity of carbon in pure iron. The paper presents an analyzer and the method for the continuous determination of weight percentage of ore grains with diameter smaller than 75 µm in mineral slurries. The method is based upon the measurement of characteristic x-rays of copper excited by primary radiation of two different energies 16.5 keV and 60 keV from Pu238 and Am241 sources respectively. Additionally the backscattered primary radiation is measured in order to correct the variations of the solids content in the slurry. Since the particle size distribution of slurry can be described by the Rosin-Rammler formula, some calculations have been carried out in order to evaluate the influence of distribution parameters upon the results of the measurements of weight percentage U75 of particles smaller than 75 µm. The influence of solids content and of the copper concentration variation on the results has been also evaluated.1 It resulted from the calculations that the ratio rl/rz, where rl and r2 are the relative intensities of copper characteristic x-rays excited with 16.5 keV and 60 keV photons respectively does not depend on the copper content within the range 1 % to 4% of copper and is slightly dependent on the solids weight fraction and its chemical composition. The change of the dispersion parameter of the Rosin- Rammler distribution from 0.5 to 0.9 results in a change of value of U75 of approximately 3.0%. The results of calculations have been confirmed by the results of laboratory experiments. Therefore, a prototype of industrial analyzer for continuous determination of weight percentage of particles smaller than 75 µm has been designed and made. Its schematic drawing is shown in [Fig. 1]. Slurry is flowing down through steel flow-cell of the length equal to approx. 2 m. In the center, two XRF measuring heads (1) and (2) are located. Each of the heads comprises a rigid waterproof cover (3) with the mylar window (4), in which a proportional counter of resolution 15% for 6.4 keV is mounted with a preamplifier (5). To prove this, I need quote only two of his assertions, the italics being mine: "lt is a stern fundamental principle that a11 natural resources are the inalienable property of the crown.'' "The right to a claim should only exist as long as it is worked or taxed to insure work. Once depart from that sound maxim, there results improper control of the natural resources of the country, which primarily belong to the people." These assertions formed the basis of my criticism1 of Dr. Raymond's paper in 1913, and they should be inscribed in letters of gold above the entrance to the office of every county recorder in the United States. I venture to assert that the existing United States mineral land laws are essentially unfair to the nation and a hindrance to the legitimate miner, because they fail to embody the above quoted principlca; and this applies both to state laws east of the Mississippi and to federal laws in the West. That these laws favor the forestaller and the monopolist, defraud the government of its fair share of the profits of mineral production, and tend to industrial feudalism must be evident to any competent unbiassed observer. The fact that no serious political movement arose to change them, until the conservation agitation of the last decade, may be largely explained by two salient conditions. First, as stated by President Winchell, "for a long time there was such a vast surplus, or excessive amount of unwanted, undesirable land in the West that the land offices did not scrutinize the claim sought to be located;" second, that the millions of individual farm owners throughout the country could easily be aroused, by the special pleaders hired by the great land speculators and monopolists, to use their vast political power for the suppression of any statesmen striving to incorporate in our semi-feudal land laws any such principles as those quoted from Mr. Godson. While agreeing with Mr. Godson that a freehold or fee-simple title, if coupled with obligatory continuous work, may have the same practical effect as a lease, it seems to be the experience of the most active and

The system has been designed to convey such diverse bulk materials as copper concentrates, copper precipitates, lime, limestone, silica, flue dust, and revert materials. The moisture content in the materials varies from bone dry to a maximum of 25%. Since the summer of I974 when the smelter went into operation, the material handling system ha provided satisfactory and dependable services.

Investigations were carried out on the effect of polyslip on the strain hardening of aluminum single crystals. The orientations investigated were those lor which the tensile axis was in the [001], [111], [112], and [012] directions plus another for which the Schmid angles for {111}(110) slip were 1 deg. The experimental data were analyzed on a model based on the intersection of dislocations with particular emphasis on the effect of polyslip on the activation volume for inter-section. It is shown that the rate of strain hardening inreases for those orientations wherein attractive dislocation intersections occur and that those orientations which produce the greater number of such intersections exhibit the greater strain hardening. Good correlation of the data is obtained with the concept that attractive junctions, as proposed by Saada, Play an important role in accounting for the rate of strain hardening. EXISTING concepts on the nature and cause of strain hardening in fcc metals have been deduced principally from experiments on the deformation of single crystals under single slip. The effect of crystal orientation on the shapes of the stress-strain curves for single slip have been summarized by seegerl and more recently by Clarebrough and Hargreaves.2 Tensile specimens whose axes fall near the center of the [001]-[011] line of the standard triangle of the stereographic projection exhibit the longest range of easy glide (Stage I) and the lowest rates of linear hardening (Stage 11) whereas specimens whose axes lie near fie [001]-[111] line of the standard triangle have limited or no easy-glide range and exhibit somewhat higher linear strain-hardening rates. Specimens whose axes lie near the [001] or the [ill] poles do not exhibit easy glide and have the highest rates of linear hardening. Kocks3 has shown that the highest rates of linear hardening Occur under Polyslip when the tensile axis coincides with the [111] or the [ 001] pole. Since the rate of strain hardening is sensitive to specimen orientation and the incidence of polyslip, these relationships might help to discriminate between various dislocation models for strain hardening in fcc metals. Previous attempts to analyze the effect of orientation on strain hardening,1"3 however, did not provide a unique answer to this problem. Consequently the present investigation was undertaken wherein additional data, particularly that for the effect of polyslip on the activation volume for intersection, was also determined in order to provide more complete information on the details of strain hardening. Whereas analyses of these data reveal that several recommended models for strain hardening are at variance with the facts, good correlation of the data is obtained with the concept that attractive junctions4 play an important role in accounting for the rate of strain hardening. I) EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH seegerl demonstrated that slip in fcc crystals at low temperatures is dependent on thermally activated intersection of glide dislocations with forest dislocations. This has been confirmed by tests on single crystals of aluminum by Mitra, Osborne and Dorn5 and on polycrystalline aluminum by Mitra and Darn.' Thus in accord with Seeger's theory, the shear strain rate, ?, below a critical temperature, T, is where .V is the number of points of contact per unit volume between forest dislocations and glide dislocations, A is the area swept out per successful intersection, b is the Burgers vector, v is the frequency of vibration of the segment of the glide dislocation undertaking intersection, U is the activation energy for intersection, k is Boltzmann's constant, and T is the absolute temperature. For aluminum, which has an extremely high staeking-fault energy, the constriction energy is negligibly small and therefore the activation energy decreases practically linearly with the stress according to as will be recomfirmed later, where Uo is jog energy at the absolute zero, G and Go are the shear moduli at the test temperature T and O°K, respectively, L is the spacing of the forest dislocations, t is the applied shear stress for slip, and tGo is the stress field that must be surmounted athermally.

BLAST-FURNACE blowing engines are broadly of two main types: either steam- or gas-driven reciprocating engines, or turbine-driven rotary engines. Some results of experience with a furnace blown by an engine of the latter type may be of sufficient general interest to relate. The first engine of this type was installed at Oxford Furnace, New Jersey, before the writer's connection with this plant, in March, 1910. This furnace uses chiefly New Jersey magnetites and had been in blast seven months on its old engines when the turbo blower was started. It was 80 ft. high by 17 ft. 6 in. bosh and 11 ft. hearth diameter. It is of interest to see from the records what happened when the turbo engine was put to work. But of course, as the old blowing equipment was rather antiquated, consisting of two I. P. Morris engines with air cylinders 72 by 72 in., in good running order, however, it is evident that the comparison between their work and that of the turbo blower cannot be interpreted as being between machines that were respectively of equal excellence as representatives of their types. Still the results were gratifying and -interesting. The records show that, with the old engines blowing 13,630 cu. ft: of air per minute, measured by piston displacement, the furnace was working up about 480 tons of stock per 24 hr. and producing an average of 132 tons per day and a maximum of 166 tons. The rotary blowing engine installed was a General Electric Co. machine, the driving end being a Curtis steam turbine and the air end a six-stage rotary compressor, all running at about 1,500 to 1,600 rev. per minute, and having a capacity of 25,000 cu. ft. of air per minute up to 25 lb. pressure, and equipped with an automatic constant-volume variable-speed governor. After running this blower, for a period equal to that covered above by the old engines, at an average rate of 15,000 cu. ft. of air per minute, the furnace worked up an average of about 592 tons of material and produced an average of 170 tons per day. Thus, on an apparent increase of 10 per cent. in the air volume there was an increase of about 23.5 per cent. in the materials worked up and of about 28.8 per cent. in the product. In a series of papers the author and associates have discussed the influence of temperature on the tensile properties of metals.11-18 These papers present much information about the influence of temperature and the stress system on the conventional indices of mechanical properties, with special attention to the fracture stress. A recent study of the data, however, has revealed much additional information about the influence of temperature on the fundamental factors involved in the flow of metals. The present paper presents results of this study. Attention will be confined almost entirely to results derived from tension tests of unnotched cylindrical specimens at strain rates a little slower than those used in ordinary tension tests. According to a concept first presented by Ludwik and elaborated in recent papers by others,8,9,22,23 the mechanical state of a metal depends on the total plastic strain, but not on the temperature during straining, provided that the only structural changes are those essential to plastic deformation. In the summer of 1948, however, the author made the previously mentioned study of results of a general investigation by the author and associates and reached the conclusion that the mechanical state depends not only on the total strain, but also on the temperature during the straining. A number of diagrams were then prepared. These conclusions were presented without diagrams in a discussion last October of a paper by Dorn, Goldberg and Tietz.2 The metals used in the investigation on which this paper is based were Monel and oxygen-free copper. The Monel was supplied by the International Nickel Co. through the courtesy of Dr. W. A. Mudge. The copper was supplied by the Scomet Engineering Co. through the courtesy of Dr. Sidney Rolle. The data to be presented are based on results of tests at temperatures ranging between 165 and — 188°C. Description of the apparatus and methods of test are given in previous papers.1011'1"2 The present paper is the first part of the general discussion of the influence to temperature on the stress-strain-energy relationship for metals. The next paper will deal with metals that are subject to structural changes other than those induced solely by plastic deformation. Influence of Temperature and Plastic Strain on the Flow Stress of Monel and Copper For a study of the influence of temperature on the stress-strain relationship, flow-stress curves obtained with annealed metals at various temperatures will be compared with curves obtained with the same metals after cold drawing or cold rolling at room temperature. Diagrams thus obtained with Monel and copper are shown in Fig 1 to 8. Fig 1 to 7 show the variation of the flow stress with temperature and plastic strain; Fig 8 is a diagram of a different type, derived from Fig 4 to 7. In Fig 1 to 7 strain is expressed in terms of A0/A, in which A0, and A represent the initial and current areas of cross-section. Since values of Ao/A are represented on a logarithmic scale, abscissas are proportional to true strains; moreover, the true strains representing prior plastic deformation and those representing subsequent strain during a tension test are directly additive. Fig 1 shows flow-stress curves obtained with annealed Monel. Five of the curves are based on results of tension tests. Between yield and the maximum load, the flow was under longitudinal tensile stress; between the maximum load and fracture, the local contraction induced transverse radial tensile stress. The portions of curves designated F, therefore, represent flow with increasing radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Si. Curve Fo is based on the ultimate stresses of specimens taken from bars that had been cold drawn various amounts.17 Since the tensile stress at the maximum load is unidirectional, curve Fo represents the course that a flow-stress curve would take if the stress during an entire tension test could be kept unidirectional. The flow-stress curve F obtained at room temperature (Fig 1) has been established accurately by numerous measurements of the diameter of the specimen during the extension from yield to fracture.17 At the time of the experiments, however, no apparatus was available for measuring the diameter during tension tests at low temperatures. Nevertheless, curves have been established to represent with sufficient accuracy the flow at low temperatures. Each flow-stress curve must be tangent to a curve U, which starts at a point representing the ultimate stress of annealed metal. Since the ultimate stress is based on the area of

The management of The Union Pacific Coal Co., which operates a group of coal mines in Southern Wyoming, believes in the value of applied psychology as a productive factor in the work of getting out coal. Operating almost wholly through the medium of mechanical loading machinery, the company has for some years paid a bonus, equivalent to one-half the labor saving made above a determined average output per shift worked, on a given machine. No penalty is attached where the established output is not obtained, but in 1933 the men on one class of machines earned an average premium of $0.633 per shift on 56.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded. On another class of machine, the men earned an average premium of $0.686 per shift on 28.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded An increase of 36 per cent in tons loaded per man-shift has resulted since the program was instituted. This coal company has also been very successful in reducing mine accidents through prizes awarded in an unusual way. At the close of the year, every man whose particular mine section passes through the year without a lost-time accident is given a ticket entitling him to participate in a safety drawing where an automobile is awarded as first prim.. There are also a number of cash safety prizes which are similarly awarded. Some 1500 persons attend the drawing, which excites much interest and attention. The particular plan employed, the payment of production bonus awards and safety prizes, is foundationed upon collective. rather than individual effort, and, once gotten under way, has proved to be substantlally self-cnforcing.

THE native methods of mining and milling gold-ores in Korea may not present any specially new features, but are chiefly interesting as primitive practices, still followed at the present day. In mining where the rock is hard, wood is piled up near the face of the tunnel or drift and then set on fire. The fire bums for twenty-four hours, after which, three or four days are given for the rocks to cool, before the miners go in and extract the loosened material. The only tools in use are a hammer, a steel gad about five inches long, and a flat spoon-shaped basket. The pay-streak or chute is closely followed, and in places the workings are very small and intricate. Rock not yielding more than $6 per ton is not extracted. The manner of opening a mine is to begin on the outcrop, where the rock pays, sink a shaft or run a tunnel on the vein, and follow the pay-streak and more easily worked ore. When this is exhausted, or the influx of water interferes, the opening is abandoned and operations are begun again at a new spot on the outcrop. The place usually selected is as high up on the mountain as possible, and in no instance is advantage taken of the topography by running a cross-tunnel to tap the vein. The ore is brought in baskets to the surface, and there placed in sacks, holding about 150 1bs. each, and taken to be crushed. The rock is first crushed between two stones, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper stone is oval and rounded on the bottom, so that it can be readily rocked on the under stone. Two pieces of wood, used for handles, are placed, one on each side, in grooves in the upper stone, and held in position by means of straw rope. The lower stone is not smooth on top, but exhibits three elevations running lengthwise, with shallow depressions between them. The middle elevation acts as a fulcrum on which the upper stone may be rocked. From two to ten men, according to the weight and size of the stone used, are employed in rocking. With four men, from 300 to 350 lbs. of rock can be crushed per day, the stone making 50 complete oscillations per minute. The men squat on each side of the stone and move it to and fro by means of the wooden handles. The ore is fed, in pieces up to the size of an egg or even larger, by one of the men. While coal was undoubtedly seen by the Spanish explorers in Texas, no mention can be found of it in any of their available published records; it was likely noticed by the first Americans, and coal along the Rio Grande River was reported in 1834.1 The next record is that of brown coal in Bastrop County in 1837 by James Nicholson and Judge Pinckney Hill? Dr. Riddell saw brown coal along the Trinity River in 1839 and described it as follows: "In the banks of the Trinity, associated with the iron ore, and overlying the brown coal, whole trees and fragments of trees, piled sometimes one upon another, present themselves completely transformed into stone. In some logs a diversified metamorphosis is observable; one portion of the vegetable structure having been replaced with silex, another with brown oxide of iron, and a third is bitumenized or converted into coal. "In concern with Dr. F. B. Page, I took considerable pains in the exploration of the Trinity brown coal formation., As no excavations for working have yet been made, the best places for inspecting the formation are where the Trinity cuts its way through the highlands, or where its banks present themselves in bold high bluffs, as at New Cincinnati, and near the site of the projected town of Osceola. The coal lies in horizontal strata, dipping one foot in thirty to the northwest. The main stratum at the latter place, just above Bedias creek; is represented by the concurrent statement of W. C. Brookfield, surveyor, Mr. James S. Hunter, of Huntsville, Texas, Dr. Page, and some other persons whom I consulted, as between six and seven feet in thickness, the lower portion being between three and four feet above low water mark. Unfortunately, during my sojourn there, the river was unusually high and turbid for the season of year; I could not consequently verify the same by personal observation and measurements. The most considerable coal beds which I had opportunity fully to inspect, were in the Trinity bluffs, southwest side, at New Cincinnati, six miles lower down, and just below the mouth of Salt creek, near six miles above. The workable stratum of brown coal in each of these localities is about five feet thick, and situated some fifteen feet or so above low water mark. In quality it is said to be precisely similar to the coal in the seven feet bed."2 . Moore in 1840 mentioned coal in the vicinity of Great Salt Lake, through which the Brazos flows; lignite in Bastrop County; lignite in the banks of the Colorado River a few miles above Lagrange in Fayette County; a deposit of excellent coal in the bed of the Sabine River, 30 miles above the
