As predicted, during 1937 South Louisiana witnessed one of the most active drilling campaigns in the history of the area, resulting in the discovery .of 14 new fields. The economic importance of 10,000-ft. production was far-reaching and the objective depths placed on some wildcats was 12,000 feet. Most of the important discoveries and deep tests were in the delta area between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, where the upper Miocene sands were found productive between 10,000 and 11,000 ft. The casing program on these wells usually called for a protection string of 95/8-in. casing at approximately 9500 ft. Drilling barges with the heaviest equipment were used where water transportation was available. The oil production for South Louisiana during 1937 was 62,147,690 bbl., as compared with 51,968,727 bbl. during 1936, an increase of 19.5 per cent. There were 281 oil and gas wells and 172 dry holes completed during 1937 as compared with 262 oil and gas wells and 135 dry holes during the previous period. New Fields Gibson.—The first discovery for the year was in the Gibson area, where Shell Petroleum Corporation's Realty Operators No. 1, sec. 18, 17 S., 15 E., Terrebonne Parish, was completed flowing 780 bbl. of 38° A.P.I. oil daily through a 14/64-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1700 lb. Production is from upper Miocene sand found from 9461 to 9483 feet. Abbevil1e.—The discovery well for the Abbeville field was Continental Oil Company's Hebert No. 1, sec. 20, 12 S., 3 E., Vermilion Parish, completed flowing 50 bbl. of distillate and 2 million cubic feet of gas through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 2550 lb. The well was plugged back from 12,216 ft. in the Chickisawhay, and is producing through perforations from upper Miocene sand found from 7668 to 7682 ft. Later in the year, the same operators completed Brookshire No. 1, sec. 66, 12 S., 3 E., flowing 366 bbl. of 42° A.P.I. oil per day through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1800 lb. The settlers of a new country necessarily suffer at first from the lack of accumulated stocks of metals - in-use that are possessed in older countries . Our American colonists were at first compelled to import their metals in manufactured forms , and it must have proved difficult to produce an exportable surplus of commodities with which to pay for them . These circumstances stimulated a search for domestic ore deposits . Various discoveries resulted , so that as early as 1628 , we find the colonists importing two craftsmen from England to establish iron -works in Massachusetts to beneficiate local ores . In 1648 , an iron -works at Lynn was producing metal at an annual rate of 400 tons . Later on , the colonial iron industries became of importance , some metal being actually exported to England . The people of this country thus early became convinced of the necessity for domestic mineral production . It is now little realized how persistent were their efforts to - make mineral discoveries , before the gold- rush to California ; the extraordinary success of our subsequent mineral explorations has overshadowed the earlier record . Precise and complete accounting of our mineral production , having the character of national bookkeeping , is available only for the series of years beginning with 1880 , when commences the official record that is provided by the Government publication called Mineral Resources of the United States . In the period of 52 years , from 1880 through 1932 , the value of mineral production of the United States amounted to more than 122 billion dollars . Only 12 billions of this total were produced in the 21 years , 1880-1900 , while nearly 110 billions were produced in the first 31 years of the present century . Of this 110 billions , over 53 billions were produced in the most recent decade , 1921- 1930 , the production of the previous decade , 1911-1920 , having been only 37 billions , though it included the war period ; that of the decade 1901-1910 was 16 billions . In 1931 , the total value of mineral products of the United States was $ 3,180,000,000 , compared with an average annual value of $ 5,556,000,000 during the previous five - year period , 1926-1930 . The decline in 1931 from that average was therefore 43 per cent . As to the three great groups of mineral commodities , metals fared worst , with a decline of 55 per cent in the value of their production , while the value of fuels declined 39 per cent , as did that of the nonmetals group .

Most of the fourteen workable coal seams in the State of Missouri have high ash and sulfur levels and need beneficiation in order to meet customer and Environmental Protection Agency requirements. If proper ash and sulfur removal methods can be designed, more Missouri coals will be mined and used within the state. One of the main objectives of this research is to investigate the possibility of removal of sulfur of Missouri coals by conventional beneficiation methods.

INTRODUCTION In this paper the author will attempt to bridge from the paper work of design and engineering to the reality of implementation. Certain facets of construction are constant to a successful project, no matter the level of technical complexity. Basic to timely, low cost construction are the people assigned to the project. Construction is not accomplished by robots, computers, or speeches; but rather by people. People do however require the avail- ability of equipment and communications to properly complete the work. ORGANIZATION Good organization is the basic requirement of a well implemented construction project. For this paper the author will suggest an organization chart as well as an activity listing that together support the construction activities. There is little difference in the activities or functions needed to construct a small plant or a large one. It is a matter of how much time an individual has to spend on an activity that determines the structure of an organization. The difference between a large and small plant construction job is often described as the multiple hat versus the single hat philosophy. As an example, a resident construction manager on a small job might be the manager, the field engineer, the scheduler, the estimator, and the procurement manager. At some time during a construction

EVER since the introduction of the Siemens regenerative furnace, it has been recognized that a certain amount of gas is lost each time the furnace-action is reversed. This loss comes, first, from the gas which passes through the free connection between the stack and the gas-main, which exists during the time the reversing-valve is turning over; and, secondly, from the gas which is in the chamber and flues, from the hearth to the reversing-valve, and which flows back into the stack when the valve is reversed. The amount lost each time is, of course, small; but, since a furnace is reversed from four to six times every hour for, say, 300 days in the year, the aggregate is large enough to be well worth attention. The estimate has been published' that, in Germany alone, the loss from the first of the above causes amounts to 500,000 marks per year. The loss from the second cause is, of course, much greater. A process for saving this entire loss, in use at Teplitz, Bohemia, for about three years, would seem to be of value even in this country, where coal is cheaper and where the small economies are not watched as closely as they are in Europe. This process, invented by Mr. Adelbert Kurzwernhart, late Technical Director of the Teplitzer Walzwerk, has been worked out with thoroughness. The loss from each cause can be calculated very closely for any particular furnace, and the results to be expected from the process ascertained. It can easily be decided, therefore, whether it is worthwhile to adopt it under any given conditions. A new bacterium, Thiobacillus cuprinus, can extract copper from chalcopyrite as rapidly as T. ferrooxidans. On solution with and without nutrient amendments and bacterial growth media were supplemented with T. ferrooxidans or T. cuprinus in shake flask studies. Both species extracted -42% of the copper using growth media. In one case, T. cuprinus solubilized approximately twice as much copper as T. ferrooxidans utilizing a seeded On solution. Thiobacillus prosperus also oxidizes chalcopyrite and tolerates high chloride concentrations. These sulfide-oxidizing bacteria are representatives of the mixed microbial community found in sulfide dumps. Rates of biological copper extraction from sulfide ores, using the native microbes, have been significantly enhanced by amending On solution with PGM.

Garnets are usually found well crystallized in the cubic system , the principal forms being rhombic dodecahedrons , tetragonal trisoctahedrons or combinations of the two , and hexoctahedrons . They also occur as rounded disseminated glassy grains and in compact massive , laminated or gramlar aggregates . They vary greatly in color , but the most common garnets , almandite and andradite , are most often found of a dark red or reddish brown color .

Analysis of adverse technical issues has traditionally relied on a snapshot of the state of the operation complemented with both the melt shop’s archived data and eyewitness accounts of adverse events. The GrafTech ArchiTech System is helping EAF shops solve problems faster by combining continuous analysis of information with statistically based alerts of process deviations. After one year of system implementation, a number of cases have been detected and communicated to melt shops worldwide. The objective of this paper is to examine a few of these cases; the early detection, statistical analysis, deviation reporting and the resulting countermeasures implemented.

NO new ferrous alloys have been produced in the last five or six years that are as outstanding contributions to civilization as were the high-speed steels of the early part of the century or the stainless steels announced at the close of the World War. There have been, however, many developments of major importance having to do either with modifications of existing alloys or with new methods of treatment of older iron or steel alloys. Only a limited number of these new developments can be discussed and their selection does not necessarily imply that these are the most important but merely that they are of general interest rather than perhaps of greater importance in highly specialized fields.

Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel frame- work buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements be- came more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as com- pared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft.

DURING the past few years frequent reference has been made to a certain type of iron known generally as "bad iron," "dirty iron," etc., both by steelmakers and producers of iron castings.1 Open-hearth operators have claimed that such iron was entirely within the specified limits as to ordinary analysis but it was difficult to make good steel from it. It has been suggested that unreduced material in the iron is responsible, also that most trouble is experienced with the iron when the blast furnace is delivering a product whose analysis is more or less variable. Other reasons suggested are the use of scrap or borings, unsintered flue dust in the burden, a cold hearth, too high a proportion of unsuitable grade of ore, or the form of the carbon in the iron. Accordingly, a subcommittee was appointed at the fall meeting of the Open-hearth Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers held in Pittsburgh in October, 1926, to investigate the reasons for the occurrence of this bad iron and suggest methods for preventing its appearance. This committee enlisted the cooperation of the U. S: Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at Pittsburgh in undertaking a study of pig-iron quality as affecting the open hearth. The following is a report of the findings to date:

Neste caso o PREN de uma das fases pode ficar abaixo do PREN da liga. Caracterizou-se três chapas de aços inoxidáveis duplex laminados com diferentes PRENs: UNS S32304 (Lean Duplex), UNS S31803 (Duplex) e UNS S32750 (Super Duplex). Várias técnicas complementares de análise microestrutural foram utilizadas, tais como de espectrometria de emissão ótica, microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura com EDS acoplado. Realizaram-se análises metalográficas quantitativas para a determinação das frações volumétricas de ferrita d e da austenita e análises químicas semi-quantitativas das fases presentes utilizando-se um MEV com EDS acoplado.

The most important development in connection with the search for oil in Australia during 1940 was on the legislative side. Prior to 1939 legislative enactments in the various states with regard to prospecting for petroleum were such as to prohibit large-scale effort and to bar the major oil companies from operating. The preparation of the Wade Model Bill for the Commonwealth Government in 1939 and the acceptance of the Bill in principle by all States, has gone far to remove these obstacles. Amending Acts, largely based on the Alodel Bill, have now been passed by all States with the exception of New South Wales and Tasmania. In New South Wales an Amending Bill is being drafted, while the Govern-ment of Tasmania is preparing to introduce an Amending Bill provided there is any demand for it. Noteworthy developments followed immediately on the passing of these Amending Acts. The Shell Company (1)1 and the Superior Oil Company of California (2) too$ up large areas in Queensland and com-menced work during 1940. Caltex acquired a big tract of country in the Kimberley district of Western Australia (3) and has made application for an area in the Territory of Papua. An Australian company, The Phoenix Oil Extraction Co., has obtained a permit to prospect over an extensive area bordering the south coast of Western Australia (4). Other developments are foreshadowed. The Shell Company is making an intensive examination of its area in Queensland (I). Geological, geophysical and aerial surveys are in progress. Caltex has three geological parties in the held in Western Australia while Superior Oil Company of California has done some geological work in the interior of Queensland (2). None of these concerns envisages a drilling campaign in the near future. Much exploratory work is necessary. Further work has been done by the companies that were already operating in 1939, though an important Australian company - Oil Search—has abandoned the work of prospecting in Australia. This company has subleased its holdings, at North West Cape in Western Australia (;), to Caltex on a royalty basis. The company also maintains its holdings in, and connection with, the Australasian Petroleum Company Proprietary Limited, which is a combination of Standard Oil (New Jersey), Anglo-Iranian and Oil Search. This company is operating in the territories of Papua and New Guinea. Drilling Victoria.—Although a good deal of drilling was done in the LaBes Entrance Tertiary Basin of Victoria (7), no appreciable production of oil was obtained. In order to test the extent and possibilities of the oil-bearing sand in this region, the Commonwealth and State Governments jointly put down six scout boreholes to depths of between 1200 and I500 it. (communication to the Secretary*):—For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting to the Institute my results in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mine-explosions are more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more inclined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what otherwise probably would have been small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during summer and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas coal-region, in McDowell county,w.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

"Recent developments in the analysis of piled rafts has incorporated the load sharing of the raft and the piles to support the superstructure. In the piled-raft system, piles are cast monolithically with the raft and the load is partly transmitted by the raft to the soil directly below it, and partly by the piles to more competent deep soil. While these piles are effective in increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the settlements, they often lead to significant straining actions at the pile head-raft connection which may constitute the weakest link. An attempt to provide a more economical solution, that at the same time overcomes this weak link, is to disconnect the pile heads from the raft and introduce an intermediate cushion of compacted fill. In this case, the piles are considered as reinforcement to the subsoil and will also act as settlement reducers. This paper investigates the load transfers mechanism of the unconnected piled raft with cushion using ABAQUS finite elements Program. The main objective is to provide an in depth analysis of the raft–soil–pile interactions in multi-layered soil under static and seismic loads. The investigated system provides an economical alternative for traditional connected piled raft foundation, where there is no need to reinforce the piles, no need for pile head demolition or expensive waterproofing of the pile head connection. Cost analyses of unconnected versus connected piled raft systems confirmed a cost savings in the construction that may reach from 50 to 70 percent.INTRODUCTIONDesigners around the world have gained more confidence to use the piled-raft as a more realistic system where the raft and the piles share transferring the superstructure loads to shallow and deep soil layers. A further advancement is to use unconnected piled rafts as another practical and economical alternative to the traditional piled rafts. Unconnected piled raft is also synonymous to settlement reducing piles; or simply, soil improvement piles. Liang et al. (2003) has extended the concept of pile-raft-foundation to a new type of foundation called composite piled raft foundation or unconnected piled raft foundation. The foundation is composed of a sand/gravel cushion sandwiched between the raft and piles. The piles group may contain short and long piles. The short piles are constructed of flexible materials such as soil-cement columns or sand-gravel columns, and are used mainly to improve the bearing capacity of shallow soft soil; the long piles, which are made of relatively rigid materials such as concrete, and their main function is to reduce settlements. The cushion plays an important role in mobilizing the bearing capacity of the subsoil and in modifying the load transfer mechanism of the piles. In Shanghai, China, this system of unconnected piled raft has proved to be quite suitable and effective in coastal areas, where deep soft soil deposits exist."
