Volatilization of cesium from pollucite ore was investigated as an initial step in the production of purified cesium metal or cesium salts. High recovery of cesium and rubidium as chloride sublimates was accomplished by 2-hour roasts in a tube furnace using charges containing 1 part ore, 2 parts limestone, and 0.23 part calcium chloride. Recoveries of cesium in the sublimate product were 89.1, 92.9, and 95.2 pct, respectively, using 1,100° C and vacuum, 1,250° C with an air sweep, and 1,250° C without an air sweep. Most of the lithium, sodium, and potassium sublimed with the cesium and rubidium, but virtually none of the calcium, aluminum, and silicon in the charges was volatilized.

Crude Minnesota taconite was charged in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace so that smelting characteristics of such highly siliceous raw materials could be studied and smelting costs compared with those of a standard Mesabi ore. The Bureau recognized that the highly siliceous nature of the crude ore and its relatively low metallic content would be serious economic deterrents to commercial use of the raw taconite, but compensating factors would be low capital investment in production facilities, large tonnage available on short notice, high recoveries of iron, and low delivered cost. Crude taconite smelted readily in the experimental blast furnace. Coke consumption per ton of metallic product was very high, compared with the average established requirements for smelting normal grades of metalliferous raw materials. Slag rates were also inordinately high. Metal quality was erratic as to silicon, and sulfur contents were objectionably high.

The Bureau of Mines examined a low-, a medium-, and a high-volatile Pennsylvania anthracite by densimetric methods using four mesh si.s of each anthracite. Using high-pressure mercury the macropore volumes and distributions of these pore volumes determined, densities in mercury were calculated, and specific pore vo1.r. ware obtained from these mercury densities in conjunction with helium densities. The helium densities were also used with the ultimate analyses of these anthracites in calculating structural parameters by statistical densimetric methods. The effect of 106 or 108 rads of gamma irradiation in the presence of air and in vacuum upon the properties studied with two mesh sizes of each anthracite. Results of the statistical densimetric method seem to show some breakdown of condensed ring structural units at the lower irradiation level, with subsequent polymerization at the longer period of gamma irradiation. The structural parameters obtained also indicated that in going from high- to low-volatile anthracite, either the number of condensed rings per structural unit increased, or the degree of polymerization increased.

The United States (US) coal mining industry has been working under comprehensive planning, operating and rehabilitation regulatory requirements for nearly 35 years. The public desire for environmental protection during mining and rehabilitation following mining to achieve post-mining land use and sustainability goals has been a major factor and continues to influence the process. Mining companies have evolved operations to achieve outcomes that address the desired goals and regulatory requirements cost-effectively and successfully. Over the 35 year regulatory period, requirements for more diverse topography, specialised revegetation communities, landform stability and assured sustainability have increased and become more complex. These challenges are effectively met by maximising integration of mine planning and operating with the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is then implemented in a more timely and efficient manner and with effective results that achieve desired outcomes, commonly with added value. Peabody Energy (Peabody) has taken this approach in its US operations and this paper discusses an integrated approach and illustrates learnings and results with examples from several of its western US operations.CITATION:Pfannenstiel, V, 2012. Reagent control for optimum concentrate yield was studied by laboratory batch flotation tests simulating the Groveland plant flotation circuit in which a rougher concentrate is cleaned twice. The reagents were a fatty acid collector, a sulphonate collector and sulphuric acid. The study included two types of flotation feed representative of the reground and deslimed tailing from the spiral concentration circuit, one when the ore mineral is predominantly specularite and the other when it is magnetite. The factorial design included three levels of fatty acid, five levels of sulphonate and five levels of H2S04, with the two types of ore in nested blocks, making up a total of 75 tests. Similarity of results and reproducibility were established in preliminary tests. The final tests were performed in random order under closely controlled conditions following the established procedure.

Effective maintenance planning is vital for coal mining operations, where haul truck fleets directly determine production continuity. This study presents a discrete event simulation (DES) model for evaluating maintenance strategies under multiple failure modes and their interdependencies. The model integrates corrective, periodic preventive, and opportunistic maintenance, dynamically updating equipment lifetimes through probabilistic time-betweenfailure and time-to-repair distributions. Applied to a fivetruck coal haulage fleet over a one-year horizon, results show that periodic preventive maintenance delivers the highest availability (76%) under unconstrained conditions, slightly outperforming corrective-only maintenance (75%). Opportunistic and integrated approaches performed worse (68% and 69%), reflecting redundancy from overlapping interventions. These findings suggest that structured preventive programs provide the most reliable outcomes when costs and resources are not limiting. The DES framework serves as a baseline for future models incorporating cost, spare parts logistics, and workforce availability, supporting robust maintenance planning in coal mining operations.

An unprecedented, quantitative, deposit-scale understanding of major clay mineral distribution throughout the Yeelirrie uranium deposit has been achieved by adapting the existing HyLogger™/HyChips™ analytical technique to measure resource assay pulps. Spectral analysis via HyLogger™ and HyChips™ systems has previously been used as a small-scale geometallurgical research tool, but never before has it been quantitatively applied to an entire resource sample population for the purpose of developing stand alone block models for major clay minerals. Economic uranium mineralisation within the thin but extensive Yeelirrie?palaeochannel?primarily exists within the transition zone between a groundwater-derived calcrete and the underlying clay-quartz regolith. Early geometallurgical investigations identified that certain clay minerals could be deleterious to the efficiency of the uranium recovery process. Accurate calculation of clay mineralogy from resource assays proved too difficult due to chemical similarities between co-existing kaolinite, smectite and magnesium carbonate minerals. A relatively low-cost, efficient and accurate method of quantitative clay mineral analysis was required to measure over 70 000 resource assay pulps. After initial testing and comparison with QXRD, the HyChips™ 3-1 spectral logging system was implemented as a primary method of clay mineral analysis for the Yeelirrie uranium deposit. The resultant spatial data set allowed the interpretation and geostatistical analysis of geometallurgical domains across the deposit. Clay block models were generated and used in geometallurgical resource calculations to benefit the mine planning process.

Situated in north-west Queensland, Australia, the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) has been producing copper and gold since 1996. Owned and operated by Glencore Xstrata, ore is currently sourced from a newly developed underground sublevel cave (SLC) mine below the old EHM open pit (the pit). Ore feed to the concentrator is supplemented by satellite open pits comprising the Mount Margaret operation.The transition from open pit to a producing underground mine involved a complex extraction sequence for the first two production sublevels on RL1650 and RL1625. Underground mining during cave initiation was further complicated when south wall instability prevented completion of the final open pit shell. The transition mining phase included mass firing of an inclined crown pillar between the initial SLC void and the pit followed by a combination of transverse and longitudinal SLC mining.The inclined crown pillar mass firing was the first significant milestone in the extraction of the transition ore block. Comprising approximately 890 000 t of in situ material; 70 000 m of drilling was charged with 351 t of emulsion and 6026 electronic detonators to initiate the single mass firing. The firing contained five direction changes over 19 seconds making it one of the largest and most complex underground blasts ever conducted in Australia.Risk management was integrated into every facet of the technical and operational planning and execution of the transition mining phase, whilst maintaining daily mine construction and production commitments. An historical background is presented to provide a basis for the lack of normally expected developmental effort over the first 20-25 years of viable zirconium production operations. This is followed by a description of developing technology, which is the result of years of research and piloting effort directed to the development of a more economical method to produce high-grade metallic zirconium. It is predicted that many of the process improvements described will have a significant impact on future zirconium production methods and consequently on future prices and markets.

O objetivo do SHTPN (Solution Heat Treatment after Plasma Nitriding) é a adição de nitrogênio em solução sólida na superfície, formando austenita durante o tratamento térmico de solubilização, possibilitando a obtenção de martensita de nitrogênio após o resfriamento. Foram ensaiadas amostras nas condições: de fornecimento (microestrutura ferrítica); nitretada (com camada de compostos); após SHTPN (martensita não revenida); e SHTPN seguido de quatro temperaturas de revenimento (martensita revenida). Os ensaios tribológicos foram realizados em placa contra esfera de metal duro, movimento recíproco. Os mecanismos de desgaste foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e as profundidades das pistas foram medidas em rugosímetro 3D. A condição de maior resistência ao desgaste foi a nitretada. Entretanto, a superfície desgastada destas amostras apresentou microtrincas. O comportamento tribológico da amostra revenida a 600°C foi similar ao observado para amostra no estado de fornecimento, pois apresentaram predominância do mecanismo de adesão, com grandes deformações plásticas na superfície. Todas as outras condições apresentaram menores profundidades de desgaste do que o estado de fornecimento, com mecanismos predominantes transitando de abrasão para adesão com o aumento da temperatura de revenimento. Na amostra após SHTPN, a baixa capacidade de deformação plástica da camada martensítica não revenida causou fratura do material nas laterais da pista, o que não ocorreu para as condições revenidas.

The PyEarth™ process developed at Mintek has been demonstrated successfully at pilot scale. Nine tons of ore containing 2.3 mass % of total rare earth oxides (TREO) from a dormant mineralogically complex iron-rich ore deposit, was subjected to a concentrating smelting step in a 200 kW DC open-arc pilot furnace and the rare earths from the resulting slag were extracted via a hydrometallurgical route. This ore deposit is practically not amenable to extraction by conventional methods. The testwork results proved that the PyEarth™ process was able to optimize the extraction of rare earths while minimizing waste through the removal of iron as a saleable iron alloy. Reduction of iron to the alloy in the smelting step was found flexible, efficient, and controllable, while rare earths were left virtually unreduced in the slag phase. The slag chemistry is selected to optimize both the smelting and leaching performances as well as the alloy composition. Leaching of the resulting slag was found possible and most efficient in hydrochloric acid amongst other lixiviants tested.

On May 16, 17 and 18, 1871, the first meeting of the AIME was held in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. It was then that the objectives of the American Institute of Mining Engineers were set up. The first ones were to enable the Members of AIME, "comprising Mining Engineers and other persons interested in mining and metallurgy, to meet together at fixed periods for the purpose of reading papers upon and discussing subjects which have for their aim the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the safety and welfare of those employed in these industries, and to circulate among its members, by means of its publications the in- formation thus obtained." Now, 100 years later, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which has now grown to be the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, is still pursuing those objectives. Dues in 1871 were fixed at $10 per year. Now1 100 years later, the dues have risen to $20 per year. But in pursuing the objectives of the Institute, the services to members have vastly increased, as have the general costs of doing business-even "non- profit" business like ours.

The South African deep-level mining industry is characterised by high operating costs and narrowing profit margins. Compressed air is commonly the largest consumer of energy in these mines, and any inefficiencies reduce profitability. Various methods aiming to optimise the compressed air networks have been implemented without an ideal economic dispatch strategy due to the lack of compressed air storage. In this study, a genetic algorithm was developed to evaluate the financial benefit of converting underground haulage to act as an air receiver (compressed air storage). By converting inactive haulage of 1.17 km in length into a volumetric air receiver, an annual monetary benefit of R2.5 million ($163 200) can be achieved, with a payback period of fewer than eight months. However, implementing the ideal size air receiver would result in an annual monetary benefit of R7.67 million ($500 700).

O sistema ferro-oxigênio alumino tem sido investigado há muitos anos em função de sua importância para a indústria do aço. Uma grande fração de todo o aço plano produzido é de aço de baixo carbono acalmado ao alumínio, não apenas pelo baixo conteúdo de oxigênio residual em solução que pode ser obtido mas, também, pela importância do alumínio residual na formação de AlN, ferramenta importante no controle de estrutura e textura obtidas. O sistema Fe-O é relativamente bem compreendido e quantificado, da mesma forma que o sistema Fe-Al. Entretanto, há discrepâncias significativas na quantificação do comportamento do sistema Fe-Al-O havendo, ainda, bastante controvérsia com respeito a equilíbrios importantes. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é (a) realizar uma revisão crítica dos experimentos e avaliações termodinâmicas principalmente do equilíbrio Al-Fe-O–Al2O3 (b) avaliar os métodos atualmente usados para descrever este equilíbrio e (c) apresentar recomendações sobre os dados, com base em sua confiabilidade e consistência.

Techniques were developed and circuitry was assembled for measuring the total and volume resistances to the flow of electric current through solid specimens of anthracite. The two-, three-, and four-terminal test methods demonstrated the extreme sensitivity of resistivity to differences in anthracite characteristics and showed response to changes resulting from variations in structure, temperature, and moisture content.

Underground construction environments, especially those with limited airflow such as shafts, cross passages, and stations, necessitate effective dust control. This requires combining existing measures with adapted approaches for more efficient and productive operations, cleaner jobsites, and decreased worker exposure to contaminated air. This paper will discuss new configurations and trends in dust collection on Australasian infrastructure projects including WestConnex, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and City Rail Link, all of which have applied innovative methodologies for mobile at-source dust collection. Mobile dust collectors can be track-mounted dust collectors operate alongside equipment, use hydraulic stepping systems to advance with roadheaders, or compact castor-mounted units are used within cross passage confines.

Summary Statement The following notes on the geology of the Grand Lake coalfield are intended to be introductory to a second paper being read at this meeting, which paper will describe the earlier and the more modern mining methods. The coal industry of the Grand Lake coalfield is centred chiefly within a three-mile radius of Minto, but minor operations are dotted over an area of approximately 50 square miles extending easterly to the vicinity of Chipman and Coal Creek (see Figure 1). The coal comes from one seam of Pennsylvanian age. The seam varies in thickness from 16 to 30 inches and lies almost horizontal at depths of 0 to 125 feet. It has been mined and prospected over an area of approximately 150 square miles, but in a portion of this area the commercial possibilities have been destroyed by erosion. The industry is the oldest of its kind in North America, but it did not at tract particular publicity until about 1914. Since that date, mining methods have improved and the output has rapidly increased until, in 1934, it amounted to 271,335 long tons, and furnished employment for about 1,000 men (1). Approximately 73 percent of this amount was produced by the Minto Coal Company, the Miramichi Lumber Company, the Avon Coal Company, and Welton and Henderson, and 25 per cent by the Rothwell Coal Company, Harvey Welton Limited, G. H. King, the Reade Construction Company, and the Newcastle Coal Company. The remainder was produced by J. W. Carter, G. D. Crossman, T. H. Swift, C. S. Yeamans, and several other small operators. The coal is won by underground mining, except in the case of the Reade Construction Company, and a minor operation by Ashfield and Pieton, who have employed open stripping. It is mined only as required to fill definite orders, and is loaded directly into cars for shipment. In 1934, the larger mines did not operate full time, and the production could easily have been increased if markets had been available. The coal is sold in four grades: screened or lump, run of mine, slack, and stripping. The chief market is with the railways and commercial plants, with a fair amount for domestic purposes.
