BHP Robinson contracted Minnovex Technologies to implement a Comdale Expert System at their greenfields operation in Ely, Nevada. The expert system has resulted in a significant increase in tonnage. Other benefits have also been realised, including a reduction in operation upsets (having a positive effect on downstream processes, i.e. flotation) and reduced production variances between crews. The expert system is written in a unique manner using trend based logic with minimal hard limits. The result is a robust system that requires minimal operator supervision while producing very high results. The development, success and acceptance of the system can be attributed to the strong team that was assembled for this project. The team not only consisted of BHP Metallurgists and Minnovex but most importantly included operations.

Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that's been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation's resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior's rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today's high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won't be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda's Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada's national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country's energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf's Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.'' The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC's shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior's efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC's 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. Mining operations present a very different environment to the suppliers of explosives, initiating systems and services, both on surface and underground. Typical hazards include underground movement, air quality, ground stability, moving equipment, and the use of explosives. As contractors to the mining industry we do not have management control over the environment in which our people operate. The hazards and consequent level of risk that our people are exposed to in some mining operations are significantly higher by orders of magnitude than in a normal factory environment. Jinlong copper smelter and refinery, originally designed for 100,000tpa primary copper and started up in 1997, has been expanding its capacity on the basis of operational optimization and by modifying its facilities. Currently it is producing 210,000tpa primary copper, and the new phase of expansion project with a target capacity of 350,000tpa primary copper is ongoing. This paper reviews problems and improvements made with operation and equipment in the past years. Recent plant operation is briefly described. The expansion projects completed are summarized and the ongoing expansion project is present.

Although surfactants have proven to increase metal extraction by improving solution flow in porous media, these reagents have not been widely adopted in heap leaching operations because of potential incompatibilities with downstream processes that are subject to surface properties. The BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, was previously found to have no significant effect on post-leach operations. This study evaluated its performance in ores of different particle size distributions and the impact on acid consumption and metal recovery. Column leach studies, carried out on a copper oxide ore and mixed oxide–sulfide ore, showed that the effect of LixTRA 118 was more pronounced in ores with wider particle size distributions than in those with more uniformly sized particles. Solution percolation rates increased by up to 18% in the presence of leaching aid, and increased copper recovery and acid consumption. Improved wetting facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at macroand micropore level. There was no significant effect on iron recovery

Synopsis.—A description of the working of the mills of this company and the metallurgical practice in vogue, by which a remarkably complex silver ore, averaging 54 oz. of silver per ton (run-of-mine ore), is treated to give a 95.66 per cent. extraction. The main features of the processes are: The cyanide amalgamation of the high-grade ore. The cyanide treatment of the low-grade ore, after extremely fine grinding and close classification, in a caustic soda solution. The use of a wet desulphurizing process to break up refractory silver minerals. The substitution of aluminum dust for zinc dust as a precipitant. The recovery and shipment of over 13,000,000 oz. of silver in bullion at 997 to 999 fine since this metallurgy was inaugurated, about 2.5 years ago. On the completion and successful operation of the mill to treat their high-grade ore,' the Nipissing Mining Co., under the general management of R. B. Watson, started a series of investigations of the possible treatment of the low-grade ore by the cyanide process, so that they would be in a position to market only silver bullion. These tests were run in July, 1911, on a large scale, by G. H. Clevenger, on an average mixture of Nipissing ore. The results obtained by a partiai amalgamation followed by cyanide treatment gave an extraction varying from 90 to 93 per cent. and were sufficiently encouraging to warrant Charles Butters, the company's Consulting Metallurgist, in recommending that the new low-grade ore mill under contemplation should be a cyanide mill, instead of a concentrator. The cost of such a mill, capable of treating 200 tons per day, to obtain a 90 per cent. extraction at a working cost of $3 per ton of ore treated, was estimated at $250,000. Discussion of Mr. Baker's paper, read at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. MR. T. F. WITHERBEE, Durango, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) : Mr. Baker's paper is very instructive in that it shows how furnace-derangements sometimes originate from apparently slight causes. In 1896 a similar burning through of the lining occurred at the Mayville furnace of the Northwestern Iron Co., Mayville, Wis., in exactly 38 days from the time the furnace was blown in. At that time I attributed it to the fact that the bell was carried several inches to the front side of the furnace, the length of the versed side of the arc described by the lever, thus dumping a little more of the charge on the back side, which made the front side of the furnace-charge more open and consequently increased the circulation of the furnace gases through it. After reading Mr. Baker's description, I believe that possibly a little more ore was charged on the back side of the hopper, due to the fact that it was nearest to the elevator. This unequal charging, however, was unconsciously done, as the fillers were both honest and faithful. The illustration of the burned lining of Furnace No. 1, given in Fig. - of Mr. Baker's paper answers very well for the Mayville furnace. It shows that in both cases the destruction of the lining was largely due to faulty construction, in that there were no cooling-plates in the angle of the bosh and in one or two courses of brick above it, where I believe they are-more in demand than anywhere else in the furnace. The presence of these cooling-plates at the angle of the bosh would have obliged the current of the hot gases to turn the corner and would have prevented them from following the angle of the bosh com¬pletely through the lining and shell.

The aim of this paper is to discuss how to form work and organisations in the mines of the future. The Kiruna underground iron ore mine in the far north of Sweden is used as an example on how technical development affects organisational issues like skills, work identity and gender. Over a period of 50 years one can see a transformation of work from manual underground work to automation and remote control from surface level. What characterised the old underground workface was the close relation between man and the hard rock and with arduous physical work under dangerous conditions. Today, the face miners are located on the seventh level of an office building close to the mine. There is also an emerging, and in many aspects already evident, knowledge transformation û from the old and obsolete physical and tacit knowledge and skills (for example the ability to æread the rockÆ) to something new, which can be described as abstract æhigh-techÆ knowledge and skills. The modern technology has created a new type of work û new in terms of competencies and knowledge as well as workload and organisation. At the same time the mining company are recruiting more women and promoting the former pure male work as attractive workplaces for both women and men. All this has effects on how individuals and company create and recreate skills, identity and gender. To some extent the technological development predestines these changes, but there are some choices to be done when forming good work and organisations for the mines of the future. The traditional mining workplace culture and behaviours and the old type of masculinity, the æmachoÆ style, will be challenged by the new æhigh-techÆ work and new competency demands. The changes risk meeting restoring responses, which can have negative impact on the performance of the organisation, for example making it inflexible and perhaps ælaggingÆ behind the technological development. These questions need to be handled when planning future mining.

The flammability and explosibility of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine ( UDMH ) were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to evaluate hazards associated with commercial application of this material as a missile fuel . This program included the following determinations : 1. Temperature limits of flammability in air at one atmosphere pressure ; 2. limits of flammability at selected elevated temperatures and pressures ; 3. 4 . 5. spontaneous ignition temperature in air at one atmosphere and at 200 pressure per square inch gage ( p.s.i.g. ) initial pressure ; spontaneous decomposition temperatures in nitrogen at one atmosphere and at 200 p.s.i.g .; shock sensitivity over a temperature range from about ( ca. ) 25 ° to 50 ° C .; 6. shock sensitivity of reference propellants ( hydrazine , nitromethane , methyl acetylene , etc. ) ; 7 . shock sensitivity of UDMH plus small amounts of selected metal catalysts . Part of the corresponding data was obtained for a mixture of unsymmetrical - dimethylhydrazine and diethylenetriamine ( U - DETA) .

The iron deposits of the Imataca Range of Venezuela, which occur along the Orinoco River, in the northern border of the Guayana Highlands, have lately attracted attention on account of their economic possibilities. Many deposits occur in this area; some of slight economic importance and others that may rank with the largest masses of high-grade iron ore of the world. The geology and the character of the ores seem to be remarkably similar to those of the large iron deposits of Brazil. In the investigation of the Venezuelan deposits a definite relationship has been found between the mineralization of the large orebodies and igneous intrusions, especially norites and granites. The following paper is the result of a field and laboratory investigation of the ore deposits. The field work was done during the months of February and March of the year 1929, partly in the company of Prof. W. H. Newhouse. The laboratory studies have been made in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Professor Lindgren and Professor Newhouse. GENERAL GEOLOGY OF GUAYANA HIGHLANDS General Geography and Physiography The Sierra de Imataca proper occupies a narrow belt along the south bank of the Orinoco River, in the northeastern part of the State of Bolivar and in the western part of the Delta Amacuro Territory of Venezuela. The State of Bolivar is generally known as the Venezuelan Guayana, as it forms part of the same physiographic province of the Guianas and northeast Brazil. In general the Venezuelan Guayana is an extensive plateau, sloping gently towards the Orinoco River to the north and towards the Atlantic Ocean to the east. In the northern part mountains are rare, and consist mainly of elongated low hills. Towards the British Guiana-Brazil boundary, table mountains with vertical cliffs are found forming the ranges of Parima, Roraima and Pacaraima. Narrowly sized samples of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS) were leached in oxygenated acidic sulphate-chloride solutions. Chalcocite leaches via a two-stage process, the first stage being much more rapid than the second. The apparent activation energies are 42.7 kJ/mol and 68.2 kJ/mol respectively, indicating that both stages are controlled by surface chemical reactions. The leaching of covellite is also chemically rate limited with an apparent activation energy of 77.0 kJ/mol. The shrinking core model is able to be used to describe the leaching processes of both copper sulphides. Over 97% of copper present in chalcocite dissolved in 0.5 M H2SO4i0.5 M NaCl solution under one atmosphere pressure of oxygen at 85¦C in three hours from particles 36 pm in diameter while only 85% of the contained copper in covellite particles 13 pm in diameter dissolved in the same solution under the same pressure at 90¦C in six hours. About 99% of the sulphide sulphur in chalcocite was oxidised to elemental sulphur while only 90% of sulphide sulphur was converted to elemental sulphur during covellite leaching. The mechanism proposed for the two-stage leaching of chalcocite particles is as follows: in the first stage, cuprous ions rapidly diffuse to the external reaction surface where they lose electrons and go into solution as a complex cupric chloride ion CuCl'. The second leaching stage begins when covellite is formed at the external surface. Copper again goes into solution as the CuCl* ion. The mechanism for leaching synthetic covellite is similar to the second leaching stage for chalcocite except that the leaching rate of synthetic covellite is substantially lower than that of the newly formed 'covellite'. Elemental sulphur formed on the particle surface retards the dissolution processes during both chalcocite and covellite leaching. The presence of chloride ions is necessary if essentially all of the copper from chalcocite is to go into solution. When no chloride ions were present, the leaching rate of both newly formed and synthetic covellite was almost zero. The main role of chloride ions in both chalcocite and covellite leaching appears to be to disrupt the passivation film of sulphur on the particle surface.

"The Gregg River project is located 40 kilometres southwest of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and east of Jasper National Park. This metallurgical coal mine has been developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary company of Mana/ta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truckshovel open-pit operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. Mining operations started in October 1982 with plant start-up following in April 1983. Introduction This paper is an overview and update of the Gregg River project, a metallurgical coal mine being developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. The Gregg River Coal leases cover 3440 hectares and are located 40 kilometres south of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and north of Cardinal River Coal Mine (Fig. 1). This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truck-shovel operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. A total of 31.5 million tonnes of clean metallurgical coal will be sold to the Japanese over a fifteen-year term. At present, mining operations are ahead of schedule and the plant started up on schedule in April 1983. Access and Climate An all-weather road, Highway 40, connects the minesite with Hinton (the nearest commercial centre) and a Canadian National Railway (C.N.R.) spur line connects the minesite with the C.N.R. main line in Edson. Hinton is accessible by road chartered airline and rail. ' ~h~ rug~ed and varied topography in the area creates large vanations m temperature and precipitation over short distances. The region is characterized by precipitation throughout the year long cold winters and short cool summers. The mean temperatur~ of the area range from a low of -14°C in January, the coldest month, to a high of 12°C in July, the warmest month. Long-term precipitation data indicates a mean yearly precipitation of 870 mm of which 620Jo occurs during the summer months."

The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. Operations in an underground drill site have to co-exist within the mineÆs ventilation and operational system. The space requirements of a drilling operation have to be adapted to the limitations provided in available site space, which is usually defined by standard mining operations and geotechnical influences. These limitations affect borehole design, equipment positioning in the site layout and possible interactions with mining equipment and services such as water and power supply.The ventilation requirements for drill sites and the means employed vary with depth of the site, space and likely presence of gas. All drilling operations provide a particular service for the mine and in each case, drilling must operate in a manner which controls all gas, water and cuttings returning from the borehole. The various standpiping systems employed have evolved under differing influences and must cater for conditions during and after the drilling operations.The influences that gas content, pressure and flow, rib stability, cleat direction, borehole length, potential water pressure and flow have on a mineÆs operation and ventilation systems have to be considered in the design of standpipe length, diameter and fittings. Past history has a strong influence on common practice while worst case effects of a possible in-hole event should be catered for.This paper describes the early drilling systems and their limitations in ventilation and gas management. The drill site dimensions and set-up are discussed in the context of roadway conditions, equipment layout, ventilation and logistics. The use of standpiping to control all returns from the borehole is illustrated by referring to likely scenarios in a drilling site to achieve the most effective sealed depth to accommodate the worst case possibility of intersecting high pressure gas or water during the drilling operation. Atualmente, a soldagem por extrusão de peças semi-acabadas (chapas) em PEAD tem se mostrado como uma solução atraente para a fabricação de pequenas embarcações de serviço. Neste sentido, a qualidade da soldagem torna-se um elemento fundamental para a garantia da integridade estrutural da embarcação. Neste trabalho são apresentados os resultados da análise da influência de diferentes fatores na qualidade da soldagem por extrusão de chapas de polietileno de alta densidade. Os fatores analisados envolveram o aporte de calor, a preparação do chanfro, a velocidade de soldagem e a pigmentação do fio de solda. A influência de tais fatores na qualidade da solda foi avaliada tendo como referência os resultados de ensaios de flexão em corpos de prova.

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.
